If you have to use a UK source, have you considered Rapid? They are

Further information on a very wide range of UK component and tool
suppliers is available at:
http://www.ifwtech.co.uk/g3sek/in-prac/components.htm

CPC are also worth a look for this particular item because they have a
vast range of stock including audio-visual items down to the component
level www.cpc.co.uk. They used to be 'trade only' but are now a
mainline consumer outlet advertising on TV, and with much larger stocks
than Maplin.

(CPC's ready-made connecting leads are very good value and are available
with a wide range of connectors at either end. I often buy extra-long
leads at very little extra cost, and cut them in two.)

Farnell have by far the biggest stocks of RF-related parts and are also
very easy to deal with. Amateurs can register for online shopping using
the 'other' options on the drop-down lists, and receive the same good
service as commercial customers
https://uk.farnell.com/jsp/profile/register.jsp

Although Farnell and CPC are owned by the same company, they are two
completely different operations, each with its own customer base,
product range and catalogue. The same group also owns Newark in the USA,
and the Farnell catalogue offers a pipeline into the Newark inventory as
well (there is normally a surcharge, but watch out for special offers).

RS, on the other hand, have never been comfortable with private
customers. It still isn't possible for a private individual to register
without being forced to tell lies.

Re: [Elecraft] IMac pro RFI

2010-08-24 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
As others have said, the iMac is at fault - take it back and ask for a
replacement unit. At least if that does the same thing, you know it's a design
fault and you may then have to figure out where the RF is coming from or more
likley, how it's getting into the Mac.

As with Ron, when I had my old G4 it was (is) fine, but then for a few years,
then I bought 2 mighty mouse (mice?), both acted in the same way as Ron's and
acted as if the two side buttons where pressed, causing Expose to fly the
windows of the side of the screen. Disabling that action on the side buttons
resolved it.
This was with just a little Power and on SSB or CW. I wasn't happy with the
workaround, I complained to Apple about it. They had no idea what I was talking
about, but did agree to exchange them for a Logitech Wireless KB/Mouse combo
(which I'm very happy with, but they don't manufacture now).

I now have a iMac 2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 24 screen for a couple of
years, with the Logitech combo and no problems.

There is no excuse for a device failing due to low RFI (3W is low), might be
excusable for 2kW, but at 3W, there is something wrong with the iMac or
something getting the RF into it.
Have you removed the Ethernet connection too (assuming your using wired e/net)?

...You could go to a lot of trouble and reverse engineer the LDG cables and
then adapt them to the K3...

The problem is that the K3 needs an external input to put it in the TUNE
mode. I have the KAT3, but I need an external autotuner for use with my
ALS-600 amp. So I have this same issue with my MFJ-998 autotuner. The
MFJ-998 puts out a control signal (ground) before it starts tuning to
automatically put a transceiver into a CW TUNE mode. Many transceivers have
this capability - FT857/897, Yaesu MKV, IC-706/7000 are ones I know of.
Sooner or later the K3 will need this external TUNE REQUEST input if
Elecraft does build an external tuner for their amplifier.

Currently, I leave my MFJ-998 in the full auto mode so it starts tuning when
the SWR goes above 2:1. So whenever I change bands or antennas, I manually
enable TUNE on my K3 (output set for 15 watts). If SWR is greater thyan 2:1
the MFJ-998 interrupts the ALS-600 key line, tunes, and then re-enables the
amp key line (a neat feature of the MFJ-998). But since it takes some
milliseconds for the tuner to recognize there is an SWR problem, the
amplifier momentarily sees a high SWR before the MFJ-998 takes it off-line.
With the TUNE output of the K3 set for 15 watts, I haven't had problems with
the ALS-600 tripping out during this short time period. However, if the K3
had a TUNE REQUEST input, then punching the TUNE button on the MFJ-998 would
disable the amp first before enabling the TUNE ouput of the K3 (the MFJ-998
timing is set up this way).

[Elecraft] K3 Transmit Xtal Filter Question

The Windows Device Manager can be used to examine the device's

May I suggest that you try an off-center fed dipole? These will allow a
90 degree room corner to be placed at a fed point, also providing
multi-band coverage, and the atu will definitely tune them. There are
commercial versions, but they are also very easy to cobble together

The KX1's ATU was optimized for use with random length end-fed wires.
About 20-25 feet works well for 20/30/40 m, and shorter lengths are
fine for just 20 and 30. It will match a variety of other loads, too.
I suggest experimenting.

The tuner in the K1 has a wider range.

Re: [Elecraft] Externmal ATU

2010-08-24 Thread Phil Debbie Salas
Phil.

The problem is that the K3 needs an external input to put it in the
TUNE mode. I have the KAT3, but I need an external autotuner for
use with my ALS-600 amp. So I have this same issue with my MFJ-998
autotuner. The MFJ-998 puts out a control signal (ground) before it
starts tuning to automatically put a transceiver into a CW TUNE mode.

I believe you will find the (Straight) Key input will provide a carrier
in any mode if you turn on CW in SSB and enable VOX. It has been
used that way with the Yaesu Quadra which requires a carrier for its
F-Set function.

73,

... Joe, W4TV

Joe - The problem is that now you'll transmit at full power when you key the
radio. Not good for most external autotuners. And probably not wonderful
for the K3 output when playing into a relay-switched autotuner at full
power. I like the way so many other radios do it whereby the input from the
external tuner puts the radio in a low-power TUNE mode.

I am having a problem with the P3. occasionally after a transmission and the

it does during a transmission. This is not the problem related to the
firmware that was fixed in version .30.

===original message above==
Sound like my problem exactly.
I have an email conversation going on with Gary from support.
So Elecraft is aware of my problem and now yours.
I suspect as more P3 get out in the field there might be more.

Gary - running the separate ground did not give me any results,
Still freezing.
It doesn't appear to happen when using the internal because the timing seems
different.
Is the internal keyer always in QSK. Sounds like it is.

Re: [Elecraft] Externmal ATU

2010-08-24 Thread Jack Brabham
  Bill,

I ran into this problem a few months back and swapped several emails
with Wayne about it.

Currently there is no specific support for external tuners from the K3,
so the method you are using is the only possibility.

I did some research on external auto-tuner protocols for Wayne and my
understanding of the ensuing discussion was that Wayne was going to
implement Kenwood AT-300 hardware handshake protocol in the K3. This is
a the common Kenwood 2 wire/2 way interface and allows for tuner
initiated auto tune sequences as well as enabling the K3 TUNE button to
function normally with an external autotuner.

The initial estimate for availability was a couple of months ago. I
have no idea where this is currently on the enhancement list for the
K3 but I'm still looking for it, and hopefully soon.

I finally got a chance to search for the list posting by Eric that

From Eric Swartz WA6HHQ - Elecraft:

We do not recommend adding any sockets. They introduce
reliability issues in some cases and also can add to
critical lead lengths in RF areas.

Any problems caused by adding additional sockets to our
designs also will not be covered by warranty repair.

Socketing all ICs on a PCB is pretty much an obsolete, unnecessary, and
potentially troublesome concept for production (de-bugged) PCBs like those
of the K1.

It's not unlikely that at some point one will have to replace front panel
potentiometers (I had to replace my volume control after a year of
operating), or the VFO pot, or some panel pushbuttons, or the phone jack.
Anything with moving parts. But ICs?? Baring infant mortality or
RF/lightening damage, it's very unlikely one will *ever* need to pull and
replace any IC except those MCUs with updated firmware. Those are all
socketed on the K1 except for the very simple KNB1 MPU, for which the need
for a firmware update will not ever be likely.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] TX Gate Feature request

2010-08-24 Thread Jim Brown
Lu,

Try three things. First, use the Low setting for Mic Gain on the Menu,
and then set the Mic Gain pot on the front panel to a fairly low
number. Second, set TXEQ for the three lowest bands to their lowest
setting (-16). Third, position the mic so that it is below your mouth a
bit, so that you're hitting it at close to 90 degrees off axis. There
is no proximity effect at 90 degrees to a cardioid mic. Now, tweak the
Mic Gain and Compression as described in the manual. I find 10 dB of
compression on peaks (as indicated on the meter) is about right for
contest operating. For casual operating, you can use less. Compression
increases the background noise.

I suspect that the combination of these things will pull your noise
down to an acceptable level.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 Owners on Oahu, Hawaii

2010-08-24 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
Any ham who purchases a plasma TV because it is cheap, will spend far
more in the agony of trying to cope with the noise.

You can try to ferrite the cables coming out, but plasma TV's seem to
be able to radiate interference directly from the set.

The nearness of the TV to your radio should not matter if all the
leads into the K3 are properly shielded. Your antenna is likely the
means of reception. If you keep the noise when you switch off your
antenna, then you are getting pickup from on the K3's connecting leads
and can likely do something about that. Since the plasma TV is so
close, grounding is not likely to help too much, as the TV can
directly induce noise on the conductor to the actual ground, defeating
a method that might work on a source farther away.

Since the Plasma is in a particular spot, you may have success using
something like the MFJ noise canceler.

Why bother? The K3 already provides all of the capability of the

gate and there is no issue with external hum loops, RF pick-up, etc.

I completely agree.

I'm still waiting for my K3 to get back from the factory, but I plan
on running the full stack of W2IHY gear with a Heil GM-5 Mic.

I've used wide range (broadcast style) mics and the Heil HC-5 element
with the K3's internal EQ and find that configuring the K3 for a 6 dB
per octave roll off below 400 Hz (50 Hz: -16dB, 100 Hz: -12dB, 200 Hz:
-6 dB), a -6dB notch at 800 Hz and 6 dB per octave rise above 1000 Hz
(1600 Hz: +6dB, 2400 Hz: +10dB, 3200 Hz: +12dB) yields extremely good
audio reports with the broadcast mic and a lot of presence without
the restricted sound on the HC-5.

Coupled with CMP at 25, this provides plenty of punch without
sounding over processed and all highs like the HC-4.

Because I've worked in pro audio for nearly 50 years, I own a bunch of pro
mics. Rather than buy a mic, I've also used pro mics like RE16 and RE20
with the K3 and other ham rigs, and done exactly what Joe has done. They
sound great that way, they get great reports, and they produce competitive
contest and DX audio. I've replaced them with a Yamaha CM500, only because
I could wear the headset and get away from the boom stand that held the
pro mic, it is comfortable, and inexpensive.

I've never owned a Heil mic, but I've heard a lot of them on the air. Most
of them sound varying degrees of bad.

Hi Guys,

I regularly get reports of having very good sounding, very competitive
contest audio.

My method is VERY simple.

1) I set TXEQ to roll off (reduce the strength of) the three lowest
frequency bands to the lowest setting (-16dB).

2) I set Mic Gain as described in the K3 manual.

3) I set Compression for 10dB on peaks as indicated on the CMP meter.

4) I have another contester with good ears (usually the Locust, K6VVA)
listen to me with his receiver set for wide audio bandwidth (that is, a
wide filter), and tweak TXEQ based on what he tells me. Some mics and
voices may sound better with a LITTLE boost (3-4 dB) in the highest
bands (#7, #8), and some may sound better with some CUT in the 4th band
(to reduce lows).

An important part of contest audio is playback of messages from the
computer. Computer sound cards can produce very nasty, muddy audio with
no punch if they are overdriven (too much mic gain for the recording)
and too much playback level.

When recording messages, make sure that you are not overloading the
sound card or producing digital distortion by setting mic gain too high.
When recording messages, plug headphones into the computer and listen to
the audio you have recorded. Does it sound clean? If not, turn down the
mic gain until it does.

When playing back messages, set the playback gain fairly low, set the K3
Line Input to about 10, and gradually turn up the playback gain of the
computer until ALC and Compression, as indicated on the K3 meters,
matches your live mic.

Hope this helps.

I've not had the specific problems you have, but I did have problems with
the P3 crashing and needing a reset after each TX when running N1MM. Then
I realized that I had removed the #10 copper bond between the computer
and the K3 to use a different computer, and had not re-connected it. When
I restored the bonding wire, the problem went away.

I also use the K9YC serial cable (CAT5, with a pair per circuit, and with
the return for each circuit going to the CHASSIS, not pin 5) between the
computer and the P3. I'm using the Elecraft-supplied serial cable between
the P3 and the K3.

I also have issues when LP Bridge is sharing the serial port with the
VE7CC cluster program and N1MM when I added the P3. I had to turn off LP
Bridge to solve that. I suspect that both Alan and Larry are working on
that.

Re: [Elecraft] [P3] and HRD

2010-08-24 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
The most obvious techno-lurch suspicion is that, predictably and most
likely necessarily, the P3 introduced a timing delay in the response
to the commands, and that HRD has a timeout and clips the response on
this longer exchange. Since it appears to be interpreting other
commands, it clearly is not a connection problem.

The only real fix is for the software author to make an adjustment in
his self-described beta software, in the timing loop, for what is no
longer a private comm channel. Since I'm sure other Elecraft
products will share this channel, the real solution is for HRD to
default at startup to longer waits and dynamically reduce these to
some overage on the delays actually experienced.

IMHO it's unrealistic to expect Elecraft to take on the burden of
adjusting central code for all wrinkles in all external add-on
software. To the extent that Elecraft CAN and does do so, that's nice
and wildly appreciated, but parasitic applications will need to
adopt and creatively manage the burden to stay current with their host
hardware.

I have seen instances where add-on app coders became obdurate and
would not adjust to morphing equipment and foundational software.
That behavior is a fast track to obsolescence. Some well know logging
software has and is in process of driving their app off the cliff.

My personal experience in hardware/software timing issues resulted in
an unshakable conviction that hardware code is no place for the weak,
the faint-of-heart, the impatient, the easily insulted, or those
looking for any kind of one time code-it, keep-it-forever software.

The only thing for sure about hardware code is that 1) what worked
this week, next week won't, 2) those needing fixes are only calling
you because what worked last week, this week doesn't, and thousands of
people are sitting on their hands being paid for doing nothing until
you fix it.

In the software business, you either keep up or die, no prisoners taken.

Re: [Elecraft] Externmal ATU

2010-08-24 Thread Lu Romero
Phil:

Yes and no. I once wanted to build a AT300 simulator and
use DIGOUT but there is a more elegant and simple way to fix
this. And you also protect yourself in case you forget to
tune if you set the tuner on AUTO and let it take care of
business.

I also have a K3 with an ALS600 and a MFJ998 and these
methods work for me. I Just use the XMIT button and not the
ATU TUNE button. They are right next to each other.

First, set the 998 tuner in auto mode. Then, PRESS AND HOLD
the XMIT button on the rig (its labeled TUNE for a
reason...). This outputs a carrier, in my case, ten watts,
from the rig (its adjustable under TUNE POWER in the menu).
If I have the amp triggered by the KEY OUT socket of the K3,
this then keys both the rig and the amp and makes around 50
watts of power which the tuner finds acceptable. If I have
the amp bypassed, the tuner can still tune using the 10
watts. Since I preset the tuner on each antenna/band by
doing a tuning cycle every 10kHz (thereby pre-setting the
memories, the '998 has zillions of them!) and since my
antennas are rather consistent, it takes about half a second
for the tuner to snap in the L and C components and Im ready
to go. You just have to remember to PRESS AND HOLD the XMIT
button then PRESS AND HOLD it again. Just TAPPING it turns
on PTT on SSB and you get no carrier out. TAPPING it on
RTTY gives you full output, and the tuner sends QRP
because it cant tune at 500+ watts. This works perfectly
for a solid state amp.

Another way is to place a momentary normally open push
button on the K3 built in keyer line (since I use computer
keying, it has nothing in it) or even a spare CW paddle in
it and set the WPM at around 25 on the radio. Closing the
switch sends a series of dits (or dahs, your choice) from
the internal keyer (that I dont use anyway) and the tuner
will set itself on that. Since I am using a MicroKeyer to
assert PA PTT and not the internal KEY OUT, and Im using the
internal keyer and not the MicroKeyer, the amplifier is not
triggered and only the exciter power is output to the tuner,
which it is happy with (in my case, 65w output). I dont do
it this way anymore, but when I had a tube amp, this was a
cheap and dirty way to get a amp keying pulser.

Hey, I paid for that K3 internal keyer!... I wanted to put
it to use!

As an aside, thanks again so much for designing the AL600
Full QSK kit! I have had one installed since my ALS600 went
out of warranty in March. It is simply WONDERFUL! It
should be a required modification to that amp! I see
Ameritron has done a similar feature on the ALS1300. Hope
you got something for that idea :)

Phil.

The problem is that the K3 needs an external input to put
it in the
TUNE mode. I have the KAT3, but I need an external
autotuner for
use with my ALS-600 amp. So I have this same issue with
my MFJ-998
autotuner. The MFJ-998 puts out a control signal
(ground) before it
starts tuning to automatically put a transceiver into a
CW TUNE mode.

I believe you will find the (Straight) Key input will
provide a carrier
in any mode if you turn on CW in SSB and enable VOX. It
has been
used that way with the Yaesu Quadra which requires a carrier
for its
F-Set function.

73,

... Joe, W4TV

Joe - The problem is that now you'll transmit at full power
when you key the
radio. Not good for most external autotuners. And probably
not wonderful
for the K3 output when playing into a relay-switched
autotuner at full
power. I like the way so many other radios do it whereby
the input from the
external tuner puts the radio in a low-power TUNE mode.

Actually you can do it rather easily. Go to the Apple menu and select
About this Mac. Click on the More Info button. This will launch
the System Profiler. In the Hardware list, select USB. You will then
see the entire USB tree as the Mac sees it. Select the serial port
entry and you will see the manufacturer's information which should
either say Prolific or FTDI.

The Prolific drivers have been problematic since day 1, but Prolific
does have working drivers at their site. There is also an open-source
driver that handles the Proific chip very well. The pre-built drivers
are available at the SourceForge site:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/osx-pl2303/

Note, though that the pl2303 drivers are not compatible with the 64-
bit Mac Kernel. As far as I know Prolific has not released 64-bit
drivers. I know that FTDI has released those and they run quite well.
Since most of us do not need to run the 64-bit kernel this should not
be a problem. As a side note, the Mac handles 64-bit applications
quite well and does not need to run the kernel in 64-bit mode to do so.

The limit on the aux 12 V output is 500 mA. Each product has a spec

adding them up.

Re: [Elecraft] IMac pro RFI

2010-08-24 Thread David Herring
For the benefit of others who may read this at a later date, I will just say
that I am in agreement with what Jim says here. The FCC's position on such
things is well documented (albeit possibly not as enforced as it should be?).

I believe there are certain points of practicality that must prevail:

The FCC position on commercial electronics acting as unlawful receivers aside,
we as hams still have the responsibility to run the cleanest stations we can.
This means that we should do everything practical to minimize the emission of
RF in places where it does us no good. If this means taking a little extra
time to re-route cables and place appropriate RFI countermeasures in place
before marching our electronics back to the vendor for refunds, then it's time
well spent.

This also serves to reduce RF exposure to the humans and animals in our
households, too. Even though we have all done our station assessments and
deemed ourselves to be in compliance with the FCC's exposure guidelines (and we
all have done this, right???), its always better to reduce exposure when we can.

And finally, it is well known that most all commercial electronics are
ridiculously susceptible to RF -- certainly more so than they should or could
be. How they get away with it is a topic for another reflector. Suffice to
say that if we can reduce our unintended emissions enough so as to not affect
this equipment, it's likely more convenient for us. While it's well within our
legal right to return this defective equipment, it is not always in our best
interest. The time and energy spent returning the equipment, dealing with the
inconvenience of finding a substitute, and/or the problems associated with not
having the equipment at all, all must be accounted for.

This is OT, so I'll quit for now. :-)

should not act as a radio receiver. If it does, IT IS DEFECTIVE, either in
construction, or design, or both. Giving a manufacturer a pass for lousy

2010-08-24 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Joe - The problem is that now you'll transmit at full power when you
key the radio. Not good for most external autotuners. And probably
not wonderful for the K3 output when playing into a relay-switched
  autotuner at full power.

The Quadra uses F-Set for adjusting its internal tuner and is spec'd
to require at least 70W for F-Set to operate. If a full power auto-
tuner can't handle 70 Watts while tuning there is a problem.

The K3 should certainly be able to handle a relay-switched tuner on
short-term tuning without a problem ... it certainly does with the
KAT-3.

I believe you will find the (Straight) Key input will provide a carrier

stations penetrate so, at least that is what I think I am experiencing. The
narrow peaks of a transmitting signal which sounds the closest to normal,
has the best signal. Those with flat peaks or multiple peaks are those
which aren't quite as strong. Interesting. I am learning. Love the
display!!! Great piece of equipment.

I am not certain if you or someone else originally asked the question -
but --
The K3 can provide a lower power RF source for tuning.
As others have mentioned - first set the Tune power in the menu.
Then use TUNE (not ATU TUNE) and the K3 will transmit at the power you
set in the menu.

How you command the tuner to initiate its tune is quite a different
matter. Perhaps RF sensing is appropriate - or one would put the K3

[Elecraft] Low-Power (5W) Watt Meter Calibration

2010-08-24 Thread Bob
Hi,

I just finish setting up another K3 and all went well, however, I was trying
to calibrate the Low-Power (5W) Tune power reading according to the manual
and I am not able to get the output up to 5W. According to the Bird Watt
Meter, it will only go as high as 4W, not a big issue, but wondering if
anyone can shed some light on this.

The 50 Watt calibration was not an issue.

Any input or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
Bob

Re: [Elecraft] Low-Power (5W) Watt Meter Calibration

2010-08-24 Thread Lyle Johnson
Do you mean that the K3 thinks the output level is at 5W but the Bird
thinks it is at 4W? Or do you mean that the K3 and the Bird both think
the output level is 4W?

If the former, then you can do a calibration of the K3 wattmeter if you
are certain that the Bird is accurate. This procedure is described in
the manual.

If the latter (or something else!), then please contact support.

I am successfully running CW Skimmer in Compatibility mode Windows XP SP 3.
Right click on cwskimmer.exe, select Properties and then under
Compatibility, check the box and select the mode.

Re: [Elecraft] Re CW Skimmer with Windows 7

2010-08-24 Thread Jim Campbell
I tried installing CW Skimmer on a Win 7 Professional (64-bit) laptop
but was unsuccessful. It popped up a window complaining about being
unable to write to the registry near the end of the install. I got a
similar popup when I tried to run it. If I were to persevere, who knows?
But I didn't.

[Elecraft] P3 and PC

2010-08-24 Thread Jim Miller KG0KP
I have also had intermittent problems. K3 #1442, P3 #0089, XP Pro, only two
mods applied yet(10 db gain mod that came with it, and the one with the 470 ohm
resister). In the beginning it was as bad as getting timeouts to the radio
from HRD or N1MM or even the utility program. Bypassing the P3 eliminated the
problem and reinstalling it became intermittent. I inspected the RS232 cable
ends and the connectors for pushed or bent pins and found nothing but it seemed
to get better. I then removed the cover, inspected the ribbon cable position
and seating, then removed it and reseated it. It then seemed to work much
better but still hangs up the display once in a while. Power cycle the P3 to
clear it. Sometimes, after a while, it seems to break loose on it's own. No
more timeouts though.

I was reading the mods manual and wondered if the mod where the chokes are
jumped out might be part of the problem. Also realized I don't remember
reconnecting the ground to the K3 after doing the 10db mod and do not have one
conneced to the P3 and also should probably ground the PC case to the same
ground buss. Wonder if the pin one problem is causing some of this.
Thoughts?

I called today intending to order the DSP all the outstanding mods but
realized I had a lot of questions. Will call tomorrow(today) when they are not
at lunch.
