Re: [Elecraft] Resistance Checks on pg. 45 (K3)

2011-07-24 Thread KD3RF
Hi Shane:

First, congratulations on acquiring and successfully putting together your
K3. You could not have chosen a better radio!

The guys here have given you some good advice, but I'd like to suggest one
more thing if you haven't already done so, which is to join a local club and
get yourself an Elmer -- an advisor -- who can teach you some basic
electronics, how to use your test instruments, etc.

The ARRL ( www.ARRL.org ) is a good place to start, and specifically you can
go to this page on their website to find a club nearby. (
http://www.arrl.org/find-a-club )

Be advised that different clubs have different areas of interest... some are
repeater clubs, others are focused on contesting, and others are general
interest / more diverse.

There are plenty of technically oriented members in these clubs and I'm sure
you will find someone who will be more than happy to guide you along the
way.

Best of luck to you and enjoy your K3.

One thing that someone pointed off off list.

By having the amplifier and power supply on one board, if the power
supply fails catastrophically, you have a lot of very expensive RF
components attached to a burned up PCB. Separate PCBs would be a good idea.

2011-07-24 Thread paule...@yahoo.com
Hi, This is Paul N6PSE, Co Leader of ST0R,

Yes, we have three K3s here at STOR that belong to myself and the team members.

The K3 pictured is at K6TDs house just before the DXpedition, Kevin K6TD was

As a note to the popularity of the K3, Icom offered to provide any/all radios
to ST0R, however the team
members said they would rather bring their own personal K3 radios instead.

So far they are working very well, despite the damage caused to my K3 by

[Elecraft] ANT1 vs XVTR OUT isolation

2011-07-24 Thread cococosti

Hello,
I'm newbie of K3. I have a little trouble: when I switch TX to RX and RX to TX
and I transmit on ANT1 (I don't have ANT2), on XVTR OUT I see that RF comes out
the BNC plug. I have tried to see how much RF is on XVTR gate, but I don't have
little power meters, so I have watched with oscilloscope. I have found about
14Vp-p (that means 490mW or 27dBm) but only in the time when I switch PTT (few
milliseconds).
I have done all settings in CONFIG menu for installing an external transverter
(and I had particual attention on these settings).
I have also seen on manual, at page 39, last paragraph, a text that warns about
isolation of XVTR OUT vs ANT1 and vice-versa.
At now I don't understand if, when I TX in HF (expecially for contests), I need
to unplug transverter from XVTR gates or not.
I am afraid to broke my 144MHz transverter.
Does someone has noticed this?
Many thanks for reading.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Serial 0194 Done!

2011-07-24 Thread Bruce W1UJR
Just finished up serial # 1094, nice kit, takes about 5 hours or so if you're
enjoying the process.
On the air flawlessly this afternoon, photos up at
http://www.w1ujr.net/elecraft_builds.htm

A few observations:

LEDS
Metering LEDS not very straight or level, was somewhat disappointed with the
installation
job on the LEDs, many are not installed in line or level. Tempted to touch that
up
myself as I have a nice rework station, but thought I'd call Elecraft first. I
won't care
so much if it were something like the W1 wattmeter, but on a product the cost
of the
amp, I know that Elecraft can do better.
Anyone else notice this?

Missing Hardware
I'm short almost all of the flat head screws for the top.
Thought I misplaced a bag, double checked, I was very
careful to measure screw length though out the build.
Anyone else have a problem with this?

Ribbon Cable
Anyone short the ribbon cable for front display?
I remember these back in the days of the early PCs,
think you can just pop off the back plastic cover
and punchdown the cable at another spot.

Love the product, these are just some feedback points and questions.

Cordially,
Bruce J. Howes W1UJR

By having the amplifier and power supply on one board, if the power
supply fails catastrophically, you have a lot of very expensive RF
components attached to a burned up PCB. Separate PCBs would be a good idea.

If it was broken into 3 modules: rf deck, control (overtemp, swr,
sequencing, fan control etc) and power supply then they could both a
HF/6M amp and a 2 Meter amp which share many modules. You get a bigger
market with commonality of parts and without much extra design work.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Serial 0194 Done!

Hi Bruce, built my KPA500 (# 166) last Sunday afternoon. Had a pause
when I fired it up for the first time and got a fault - had the top
off, easy fix. I too was short flat head screws for the top cover,
but found enough in the spares bag. My LEDs lined up ok with my
finger. No problem with ribbon cable.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Remote

2011-07-24 Thread Dana Roode
Folks - who out there has set up their KPA500 as a part of a remote
station? I'm planning to do so here, and wondering whether others
have used the pins in the AUX cable or plan to use software commands
to turn the Amp on and off, etc. It appears both may be options.
There also appears to be a pin in the Aux cable that indicates a fault
condition, which would be handy to monitor remotely (I have a
LP-Remote board from N8LP).

I need to make a custom cable between the K3 and the KPA500 to connect
some lines (band indication, auxbus?) and bring out others - the ON
pin for the K3 that I currently use, the toggle ON/OFF pin for the
KPA500, etc.

So, what are others doing? I see there are options to connect the KPA
to the K3 via RS232 not sure what that would buy me.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Remote

2011-07-24 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Dana:

There isn't an option to connect the KPA500 to the K3 via RS-232. There's
an option to connect the KPA500 to the K3 via its 15-pin ACC connector. If
you use that cable, the K3 can track band changes initiated by the
amplifier, the amplifier will track K3 band changed without requiring
transmission, and it includes the amp keying line and the ALC voltage. This
connection also includes an AUXBUS connection that the KPA500 can use to
send fault indications to the K3. And the K3 can automatically adjust its
output power based on its knowledge of the amplifier being in operate.

The KPA500's PC serial port should instead be used for your remote control
program, which could be the KPA Utility, or someone else's remote control
program.

When you use the KPA500 and don't switch the back panel power rocker switch,
the front panel on/off button (and the equivalent software command) turns
off the high voltage power supply, but leaves the microcontroller running.
The microcontroller runs in its boot block code and part of that code
recognizes a software power on command. The KPA500 Utility Operate page
uses this technique for its remote control power turn-on.

If you require the KPA500 to be really, really off, you should first press
the front panel power button to turn the amp off. Then you can remove all
power by switching the back panel rocker switch or interrupt the KPA500's AC
supply. It's a good idea to let the amplifier close down in a controlled
way (press its front panel power button, physically or via a remote control
program) so that it has a chance to write its current state into EEPROM and
also dump HV filter capacitor energy into the fan. If you don't do this,
you'll see fault table entries (using the KPA500 Utility's Fault Table
display) showing uncontrolled power off events.

Nice callsign, Dana!

[Elecraft] KPA500 - SWR

2011-07-24 Thread VE3NFK
Hi

Just finished building the KPA500 and it is a beautiful piece of work...

I have an LP-100 RF Wattmeter and SteppIR 4 EL.

The LP-100 says SWR is 1.35; the KPA500 says 1.8 (on 30 meters)...

I can adjust the SteppIR of course - but then the LP-100 reads incorrectly?

- the K3 by the way agrees with the LP-100 as to the SWR (much lower than
the KPA500)

The LP-100 is located AFTER the amp - so it reads the full output power.

this holds true on all higher bands.

any suggestions please?

thanks and 73 John VE3NFK

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Remote

2011-07-24 Thread iain macdonnell - N6ML
I'm operating my KPA500 remotely using the KPA Utility, and a direct
COM port connection. I'm actually manually switching bands, changing
from standby to operate, etc, through the KPA Utility too, for the
moment.

A note of caution; the RS232 port on my KPA500 has locked up 3 times
now (requiring power cycle on 110V input to reset). The first time, I
had to make an emergency drive in a freak spring storm to fix it.
Whilst there, I moved the 110V supply to a remote-controllable power
switch, so I can power-cycle remotely. That has saved me on subsequent
occurrences. I need to get around to reporting this to Elecraft
support. At least two of the cases were attributable to unintended
high-SWR events.

The KPA Utility's metering is of limited value, IMO, at the moment -
the numbers jump around a lot between poll events when transmitting CW
(at least). I'm using an LP-100A meter and its Virtual Control Panel
for power/SWR metering (peak mode), which works well.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Remote

2011-07-24 Thread Dick Dievendorff
The KPA500 XCVR connector is used primarily to support Kenwood rigs that
communicate their frequency via a serial port.

If you want to control the amplifier remotely, you'll probably need to
connect its PC-side serial port to some remote control program. The KPA
Utility (as one example) shows you the amplifier's output power, SWR, PA
voltage, PA current, temperature, monitors for faults, displays the current
fault, has a button to clear the current fault, changes bands, switches
between standby and operate, and turns the amplifier on and off. You can't
do many of these things from the ACC connector. You can do some of them by
remote control of the K3 (like change bands). You can pulse an ACC pin to
simulate pressing the front panel power button. You can change the amp's
band by controlling the transceiver remotely and transmitting. You can
observe that some fault has occurred, but you can't read the fault code
through ACC. There's no pin on ACC to switch the amp between operate and
standby, or clear a fault.

Dick,

Thanks - I went back and read the manual and I see it clearly explains
what the RS232-XCVR jack is for. Sorry, I missed that.

Ok on the advantages of the RS232 port, I will hook that up. I run my
remote station with an 8 port terminal server, and have one port left
(I control the rig, 3 rotators, LP-Remote, LP-100 watt meter, and
Winkeyer). I have control over the power to the amp to shut it off if
I need a hard reset (via LP-Remote and a relay-power jack). I can't
use the standard Elecraft K3-KPA500 cable as I need to bring out pins
from the K3: ON and FSK are the ones I remember. So, I will build a
cable and bring out the various pins I may use on either side of the
connection.

Operate page uses this technique for its remote control power turn-on.

If you require the KPA500 to be really, really off, you should first
press the front panel power button to turn the amp off.  Then you can
remove all power by switching the back panel rocker switch or
interrupt the KPA500's AC supply.  It's a good idea to let the
amplifier close down in a controlled way (press its front panel power
button, physically or via a remote control
program) so that it has a chance to write its current state into
EEPROM and also dump HV filter capacitor energy into the fan. If you
don't do this, you'll see fault table entries (using the KPA500
 Utility's Fault Table
display) showing uncontrolled power off events.

 Nice callsign, Dana!

There also appears to be a pin in the Aux cable that indicates a fault

At this point I see I can control the KPA via its RS232 port but for some

There's an option to connect the KPA500 to the K3 via its 15-pin ACC

initiated by the amplifier, the amplifier will track K3 band changed
without requiring transmission, and it includes the amp keying line

connection that the KPA500 can use to send fault indications to the

The KPA500's PC serial port should instead be used for your remote

Re: [Elecraft] Could the be the basis for the KPA-1500?

2011-07-24 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Nice demos and a reminder of just how dangerous QRO RF can be - to people
and to property.

In my commercial work I learned to be as careful around RF as I am around
any high voltage - especially after accidentally drawing a small arc from an
RF source. Messing with 50 or 100 watt Ham rigs from which we often drew an
arc with a pencil from a high-impedance point made me careless. My QRO burn
only made a small black patch on my skin, but it felt exactly like a nail
had been shoved through my flesh - and it felt like the nail was still there
for days! RF burns are deep burns that injure a lot of tissue and nerves.

If I had been doing that YouTube demo, I'd certainly have worn the welding
mask and more than that T-shirt in case some hot metal bounced around.

Until now, a solid state amp could do limited damage because it would fail
in milliseconds. The demos show these solid state amps are as robust as
vacuum tube amps, and so they are just as dangerous.

And we all should remember that one doesn't have to draw an arc or get a
surface burn to do deep tissue damage from an RF field. That's why there are
firm guidelines for RF field exposure.

RF can set fires too. G3BDQ tells the story of the Ham whose end-fed wire
ran through a hole drilled in his wooden window frame. Every time he held
the key down a curl of smoke would come out of the hole.

Roy,

Do you have any of the panhead 3/16 inch screws - like those that were
used on the K2?
If so, why not use those temporaily - they will hold things in place so
you are not dead in the water.
I believe all the flathead screws are used on the outside panels, so it
would not require any dis-assembly (other than removing the screws
themselves) when your correct ones arrive.

[Elecraft] [k2] Poor USB audio after cal

2011-07-24 Thread KC5CQW
About twice a year I like to run through the cal's on my K2.
Today, I was unable to store the BFO adjustments to eeprom and I noticed
that the USB audio sounds muddy.
Almost like the RF pot was turned down and the 2k audio filter active. The
RTTY (USB) mode also sounds like this.
LSB and CW are quite loud and clear with a more believable S-Meter response.

I was following the C22 cal Application Note procedure.
The last few times I did this, the K2 cal'ed to within 10Hz of WWV.
Before starting the cal today, it was 70Hz off. It is now within 30Hz post
cal.
The difference between TP1 and TP2 is negligible (limited by 10Hz DAC).
My beat dial Freq. is/was 10.000.02 LSB (at this point when I triple checked
the C22 cal)

I used a soundcard program to watch the 10MHz WWV 500Hz and 600Hz tones
while adjusting the BFO settings.
Once it comes back to OPT1 from FIL4 the audio tones are back at their
starting points and not were I set them. The BFO value did seem to save
however. In LSB, the S-Meter showed S-3 (as did my other HF rig), on USB the
meter was a solid S-9.
The volume was not as loud and had more bass.

I have a feeling this is just a matter of me forgetting a simple step but I
can honestly say that I have followed the procedure word for word. I even
double checked with the main K2 manual just to be sure.

It was interesting to read that others have found screws missing from the
KPA500 kit. I was missing all of the 4-40, 3/16 (4.8mm) Flat Head, Black
screws. I was able to complete the build, but I was not able to button it
up. I am dead in the water until the new screws arrive. I was able to
scrounge a few of these screws left over from parts of other Elecraft
projects but not enough to install the front and top panels. I am confident

these screws will arrive soon. Roy Morris W4WFB

[Elecraft] Another KPA500 remote question

2011-07-24 Thread M Cresap
How much chatter between a remote control program and the KPA500 can be
tolerated by the KPA500 microprocessor? As others have noted, and I have seen
as well, the power readings reported on the RS-232 line are instantaneous
snapshots. In a true remote situation, you need many readings a second to get a
good idea of the peak or average power level that you are transmitting on SSB.
So between power readings (many per second), queries for fault values (maybe
once per second), and temperature readings (one every 10 seconds) - how much is
too much?

Alternately, could a new command be created that uses the micro to accumulate
on a running basis (8/sec) and report when asked the last 1/2 or 1 second of
peak forward power and VSWR? That would reduce the RS-232 chatter and provide
much more accurate information.

Thanks

[Elecraft] KC9EHQ New KSB2 revision issues

2011-07-24 Thread David Dietrich
Hi All!

I already E-mailed Wayne about this, but I thought I would share this with the
rest of the group in case anyone got one of these recently and hasn't assembled
it yet.  I bought the KSB2 with my K2...Unfortunately, when I bought the radio
and options, the KSB2 was out of stock.  It took a few weeks to get this option
because some components were no longer available, and Wayne and the Elecraft
team had to perform some redesign work.  I got one of the new boards, and the
assembly was going by swimmingly this afternoon until I hit a snag...ALL if the
1N4007 diodes will NOT fit into their holes because the leads are too thick.
This is more than a tight fit...They just plain don't want to go in at all.
I am not going to attempt to widen the holes on my own as there isn't much real
estate to work around, and I don't want to damage traces.

Just an FYI, and no need for replies.

Re: [Elecraft] [k2] Poor USB audio after cal

2011-07-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
Damon,

The procedure in the manual is written for the average filter (of
which very few exist), so I highly recommend you use the procedure
documented on my website www.w3fpr.com dealing with K2 Dial Calibration
instead of the procedure in the manual. The entire procedure involves 3
steps - first adjusting C22 using the N6KR method which needs no tools
if you have perfect pitch, but those without it can use Spectrogram or a
similar computer application to tune WWV right on. After setting C22,
run CAL PLL followed by CAL FIL. The article has several links to
supporting information should you need it.

BTW - I am working on a Technical Note document that may be placed on
the Elecraft website in the future dealing with exactly this same
information - stay tuned, but in the meantime, use the information on my
website.

Once calibrated, the K2 will not drift because the settings are stored
in digital form and are not dependent on any oscillator other that the
PLL reference. I know that many K2s that I have worked on have retained
their calibration information for several years.

If you have trouble with the CAL PLL or CAL FIL routines not storing
data into EEPROM, that is a separate problem and must be resolved before
you attempt the calibration and filter alignment procedures.

About twice a year I like to run through the cal's on my K2.

2011-07-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
David,

I will reply anyway, because a situation like that is of extreme
interest to me.

That is a a real mystery.

I did the pilot build on the new KSB2 board and encountered no problems
with those diodes. Something may have changed since I did that build,
and the only two things I can think of are that the 1N4007 leads got
thicker or the holes got smaller at the board manufacturing house. The
board I worked with was *not* pre-production since Wayne was quite
anxious to get this new board into production, he took the risk of
cutting the new board in before I received my field test kit.

The normal holes for the 1N4007 diodes are the same size as for
resistors and other components even though the 1N4007 leads are larger,
they will fit in most any hole designed for resistors - that is true for
all the K2 boards that I know about. Do you have other unassembled
options for the K2? If so, try the 1N4007 leads in a hole intended for
a resistor on any of your other boards.

I'm just finishing my KSB2 board, and I did encounter this problem at
only one hole, the cathode for D1. Otherwise it all went together as
per the instruction, and a bonus, somehow I ended up with a few
unexpected spare parts, such as a 2N3906, two extra 2.2mfd caps, and a
couple of resistors.

Re: [Elecraft] KC9EHQ New KSB2 revision issues

2011-07-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
That is a possibility, and if so, makes it an isolated case (I would
hope that is true).
It is *possible* to drill out the holes (but certainly not
recommended). If that is done, it will be necessary to solder the lead
on both the top and bottom of the board (because the thru-plating will
be destroyed). For the KSB2, that would mean mounting the diodes far
enough to solder between the board and the component body (the diodes on
the KSB2 board are mounted vertically).

Re: [Elecraft] [k2] Poor USB audio after cal

2011-07-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
Damon,

Well, I certainly hope your flux cleaning efforts have not created
problems. It often does create leakage paths that can cause problems.
Solder flux by itself is non-conductive, and is best left alone - but
when combined with many flux cleaning ?solvents?, conductive paths can
be created that will cause insurmountable problems. I have seen
attempts at removing flux which resulted in complete failure for the
kit. Conductive paths can be created under connectors, under ICs and
any other component.

If you want to be safe, *do* *not* attempt to remove solder flux. If it
gets really nasty in one area after several re-work attempts, you can
remove the excess flux from that area with alcohol applied sparingly
with a Q-tip and dried immediately.

Use of a solder with a mildly reactive flux will leave almost no flux
residue - Kester 285 is one of that type. Kester no-clean solder is
another that works well. Save the Kester 44 with its Highly Reactive
flux for antenna projects and wires that have developed some oxidation
over time - it leaves a lot of flux residue, but cleans nicely - that
kind of cleaning is not necessary on new boards and new components.

Yes, I know that Elecraft recommends Kester 44 (among others), but
only because it is OK to use (provided you do not try to remove the flux
residue). IMHO, it is not the best choice for new construction.

Re: [Elecraft] [k2] Poor USB audio after cal

2011-07-24 Thread aj4tf
I guess you know that it is NOT recommended to try and remove the flux from
the boards after construction... if you don't get every bit of it off after
you dissolve it with whatever solvent you're using, you'll end up with a
severely contaminated board and future problems with it. If you have used
quality solder as recommended by Elecraft, there should be no reason to
apply extra flux during construction nor any reason that you would need to
clean the board after soldering.

Re: [Elecraft] Another KPA500 remote question

How much chatter between a remote control program and the KPA500 can be

snapshots. In a true remote situation, you need many readings a second to get
a good idea of the peak or average power level that you are transmitting on
SSB. So between power readings (many per second), queries for fault values
(maybe once per second), and temperature readings (one every 10 seconds) -
 how much is too much?

Alternately, could a new command be created that uses the micro to accumulate
on a running basis (8/sec) and report when asked the last 1/2 or 1 second of
peak forward power and VSWR? That would reduce the RS-232 chatter and provide
 much more accurate information.

The latter is what I had envisaged. Peak current would be appropriate too.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for July 24th 25th, 2011

2011-07-24 Thread Kevin Rock

Good Evening,
Propagation was better this weekend. There was a contest to avoid on
twenty meters but I got a number of folks checked in there. Some QSB to
fight but mostly lots of rabid contesters. On forty meters I had one op
with a new 500 watt amp from Elecraft. Woo it was loud! I kept copying
his call as AE6II but Dale disabused me of this notion. Must have been an
artifact of my eardrums touching :) Phil was quite loud too. He gave a
report of 85 degrees at the beach. Up here it was a little cooler at 77
but even now it feels sticky. I had a towel under my arm while running
both nets and need another one here to type. But the sticky weather will
not last long. Tomorrow we are due for another spate of 50 degree
temperatures and rain. We are getting summer in short day or two doses
this year.

 On to the lists =

   On 14051 kHz at 2200z:
N3AE - Shawn - MD
N7KRT - Jeff - TX - K2 - 5471
AE6IC - Fred - CA - K3 - 2241
W0EC - Garth - CO
AC5P - Mike - OK - K3 - 2170
WB0PYF - Ray - MO
W8OV - Dave - TX - K3 - 3139
KB3FBR - Joe - PA - K2 - 6178

   On 7045 kHz at x:
K6DGW - Fred - CA - K3 - 642
AI6II - Mike - CA - K3 - 4454
K6PJV - Dale - CA - K3 - 1183
AE6IC - Fred - CA - K3 - 2241
NS7P - Phil - OR - K3 - 1826

By the way, I moved Dave, W8OV, back to Texas where he belongs. Him
living in California was just not right :) Hopefully I will not get too
much more rain so I can get out in the forest. Time is a wasting, winter
is almost upon us. At least so say the foxgloves. Now it is off to the
cutting and splitting area for me. I will cease being so lazy and get to
work at something other than a keyboard.
Stay well, and cool for you folks in the sauna we call the Midwest,
   73,
Kevin. KD5ONS (Net Control Operator 5th Class)

Re: [Elecraft] KC9EHQ New KSB2 revision issues

2011-07-24 Thread David Dietrich
All,

I misspoke when I said all the holes are too small.  I made an assumption based
on one hole.  However, D2 on my board is too tight of a fit on the anode or
cathode.  I just checked the other holes, per Don's suggestion, and they seem
to accept the leads.  I assumed that if one was the case, the others would be
the same as all the holes look alike in size.

Re: [Elecraft] [k2] Poor USB audio after cal

2011-07-24 Thread KC5CQW
Too late...
I actually got bored at work one weekend and brought it in to clean it.
It was done using:
https://standards.nasa.gov/documents/viewdoc/3314920/3314920
In a class 100k clean room. :-)
The flux was RMA I think and Kester solder was used.
Hind sight is 20/20 as the flux would have been fine left alone as you
stated.
OCD comes with the job... Plus I cracked my LCD cover plate.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 for other uses

2011-07-24 Thread Alan Bloom
There actually is an undocumented feature that makes it easy to tune the
P3 to any frequency in its range (a couple hundred kHz to 22 MHz or so).
In the Xcvr Sel MENU item, select the last item in the list (labeled 0
Hz). The indicated frequency is now the actual input frequency. The
tuning rate depends on the SPAN. Select 200 kHz span for fast tuning or
a narrow span for fine tuning.

However...

Yes, it would probably work. But I recall reading a note from Eric that there

That's right. If you do this I strongly recommend you put a pair of
back-to-back diodes in parallel with the input to protect it from static
discharge. Eric blew up an RF input board when he was walking around
the roof of the factory with a P3 looking for the source of some RF
interference. Apparently he touched the whip antenna he was using to
something metal which caused a static zap.

If you don't want to modify the P3 you could wire up a plug-in diode
protector using a BNC T connector that can then be disconnected when you
want to use the P3 with a K3 again. That will also prevent the diodes
from degrading the P3's dynamic range in normal K3 mode.

I need to locate a signal on 160 meters that is caused by two BC
stations mixing due to a connection being made when the wind
blows and something contacts and creates a diode in my antenna/ground
  system.

[Elecraft] KPA-500 screws

2011-07-24 Thread Dale
G'day all,

Jeff VK4BOF suggested Stainless Steel Screws for the KPA-500. A great
idea especially for field operations in harsh environments.
I am still waiting on my KPA-500 to arrive. It left Watsonville on
July 12, arrived in Sydney Australia on July 15 Well done USPS. Now it
is still in the hands of Australian Customs and Australian Post
waiting for the bureaucratic red-tape to be processed. Amazing - 3
days from USA to Oz then somewhere around 25 days to get from from
Sydney to me in the next state. You guys stateside do have it good :-)

I do hope that I have all the parts for my build, maybe if I dont have
all the screws I can use superglue HI Hi!!

[Elecraft] K3 KRX3 install successful

2011-07-24 Thread Sam Morgan
Thought I'd share my KRX3 install adventure.

Couple of missing parts came in Saturday evening,
(2) 1/4 inch spacers with internal 4-40 threading,
been another long hot day, is there any other kind here in West Texas?
so I decided to wait for Sunday when I was fresh.

Nice breakfast, a cool down shower, couple of sermons,
and many prayers later, it's time to let the games begin.

Started about 10:00am finished about 2:30pm
Took a couple of 15 minute breaks,
had a nice ~20min chat with my little sister on the phone,
a quick lunch and another short phone call interruption later,
It's time to button it back up and go for a smoke test.

So out of about 4.5 hours,
I probably actually worked for maybe 3 hours and a few minutes..

Powered it up and no smoke was released,
yea no circuit breakers popped.
after setting the menu items up,
to activate and configure the new items,
I ran the configure on the KSYN3.

you guess it, no workie, lol
VCO error 5

insert deep sigh and more prayers

back to the bench and take the lid off the rig,
using the trouble shooting guide,
to decipher the 'PLL2 error' code that appears on boot up,
I went looking for my mistake,

sure enough while paying soo much attention
to the routing of a couple of the internal TMP coaxial cables,
essential to ensure proper signal isolation of main sub receivers
was the phrase that had caught *all* my attention.

I had missed the sentence in the step that said:
install TMP cable from KSYN3 J83 to KREF3 J1
(I wondered why I had 2 left over TMP cables) duh
but hey, there were different configuration options possible,
I just figured they had to do with the 'other' ways to wire things up.
*NOT*

I'd mention that all happened about the same time,
as my sisters phone call, but that would just be
making excuses, wouldn't it. _sigh_ tough crowd huh?)

so it's back to install the missing cable,
replace the top and close the K3 up,
drag it back across the room to the operating desk,
hook up all 18 cables *AGAIN* (yea I counted em)

power up and *PRAISE* the *LORD* and pass the DX,
once again Elecraft has proven it's ability to engineer a rig,
that has, so far, proven to be immune,
to self inflicted maintenance problems,
created by the resident idiot/op.

Now to read and understand the 2 pages of different menu items
and the many possible ways to use the K3's 2nd receiver.

[Elecraft] K3 KRX3 install successful

2011-07-24 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Sam,

Just a bit of construction hint for you.  If you experience birdies in 10m or
6m, do try to reposition or move a bit of the TMP, then you can get rid of most
of the birdies.

Also, the KSYN3 of the KRX3 has to be re-calibrate as per K3 owner manual.

Enjoy your dual RX K3 which is the smallest radio with such an ability at this
moment.
