[Elecraft] [K3] New 472kHz LF band
I see from the report of WRC-12 that a new band 472-479kHz is to be allocated on a world-wide basis with an eirp of 5W (1W in some countries). The K3 receiver currently goes down to 490kHz. Re: [Elecraft] K3 synthesizer problem
Has he done a cold reset? It really sounds like there is no antenna attached in that band segment. Has he tried simply removing the antenna/dummy load connection and see if the results are the same? If so, then clearly the antenna choice needs to be examined. I'd be willing to bet his K3 has an antenna tuner. 73 de Brian/K3KO On 2/9/2012 9:14 PM, David Gilbert wrote: You've never said whether or not you can receive OK in those band segments. I have a home assembled K3 SN 4210 that has developed a most annoying problem. I have exchanged a number of emails with Gary Surrency about this with basically no conclusion and an apparent lack of desire to solve it. I discovered that when attempting to transmit between 24,910.0 and 24,930.0 the swr bar graph shows a pulsating full scale reading and the dial reads SWR between 9:1 and 12:1, and power output of maybe 20 watts. Outside this range SWR is normal and power output is full 100 watts. This can be into a resonant antenna or dummy load. I have done the synthesizer calibration preceded of course by the ADC ref calibration multiple times. I sent Gary a list of all the parameters outputted by these tests and he says all look to be in the normal range. I have since discovered that the same problem appears between 28,500 and 29,000 Khz as well. I am trying to keep this somewhat short so I didn't supply every detail of the testing. Have other people experienced this and what if any solution did you find? Gary suggests a new synthesizer board @ $200+ but no at this point there is no guarantee that will fix the problem. I have made arrangements to test this with another K3 next week, but curious if this problem is something new. David G4DMP said Is there any likelihood that this could be extended down to cover the new band? Failing that how about an Elecraft designed, fully filtered, fully integrated, high stability, VLF up converter covering 5KHz to 500KHz. This would cater for the Natural Radio listeners, Alpha stations, numerous high power transmissions used by hams as propagation beacons, 136KHz band, NDB hunters and the new 472KHz allocation. [Elecraft] K3 and K2 simultaneous on serial to USB cables to computer
I have both my K2 and K3 connected via serial to USB cables, but I cannot get the computer to recognize the K2. The K3 is connected via the Elecraft serial to USB cable and works fine. The K2 uses a serial to USB adapter, but the computer refuses to recognize the K2 adapter and insists on going to the K3. I imagine because both are called serial to USB adapters. I know this is more of a computer question than a K2/K3 issue and maybe the computer can't recognize two serial to USB connections. Any recommendations for forcing the computer to recognize the K2 or using a different adapter? The cable from IO2 on the K2 is correct. The serial to USB adapter for the K2 may be inferior. Even when I disconnect the K3 serial to USB cable, the computer will still not recognize the K2 connection. Would the use of the Quantum Loop v2.0 active antenna with the KX-3 be advisable? Obviously, it would not be acceptable for transmit, but would such a device be safe bet for MW receive? Re: [Elecraft] Monitor (OT)
Just because one Samsung model doesn't have a problem doesn't mean that all Samsungs are OK! I bought a LCD monitor from Costco a couple of years ago - I'm fairly sure it was a Samsung. It didn't have real buttons, but some sort of touch-sensitive mechanism. Unfortunately it also turned out to be RF-sensitive, and would turn the monitor off, or bring up the config menu, etc., when I transmitted on certain frequencies. I returned it, and bought a Viewsonic, which has real buttons, and have had no problems with that one. Re: [Elecraft] Monitor (OT)
I think it's more important to consider the proximity of the monitor to the aerial, rather than the amplifier. With a bit of luck, it's the aerial doing the transmitting and receiving, not the amplifier. This brings several variables into the equation, such as aerial gain and direction (if any), height and distance from the shack. Add to that short list; power levels, receive sensitivity, frequency in use and background noise levels These variables will no doubt ensure a host of different answers for similar monitors ! You will need to make a jumper cable between the K2 and your serial-to-USB cable. See Figure 7 on Page 13 of the KIO2 manual for the connections. I have some interference problems with my receivers and have been reading Jim K9YCs excellent article on the subject. It sounds like type 31 ferrite toroids will be the answer to some of my problems and I'm interestedin buying some. I had always considered Fair-Rite to be the main source of just about everything made of ferrite, and Jim mentions them several times in his article. However, Fair-Rite's online catalog does not list them in their toroid section, nor are they shown in their downloadable PDF catalog. I'm pretty sure Amidon doesn't have them either. Re: [Elecraft] K3 synthesizer problem
NQ7R and all, Tom, that does sound like a very odd problem. I Don't remember seeing it discussed previously here. However, your suggestion that Gary Surrency may be lacking in interest to solve it doesn't sound like Gary at all! He has been around the Elecraft scene, almost from inception, and has always been very responsive, and he is very good at identifying problem resolutions! My guess is that he may simply have run out of ideas without being able to get hands on. Not every problem can be solved by email. It also appears that the two of you have exchanged several emails, and that doesn't sound like someone who is not trying to be helpful. I suppose if you have another K3 around, and could substitute one synthesizer board for another that way, you could probably determine whether or not Gary's suggestion is correct. He's probably suggesting that to avoid your having to send the rig to Elecraft for service, but that really may be your best option due to the uncertainty. Maybe you could just send them your synthesizer board and they could test it somehow. That might be even easier, from a shipping standpoint. However, maybe that's not a practical approach for whatever reason. Anyway, I know rig problems are depressing, and I sympathize with your frustration. There's a tendency to feel abused, since everyone else's rig seems to be working fine, but yours isn't! Unfortunately, bad things can happen to good people! However, I sincerely believe you are in better hands with Elecraft than you would be with just about any other manufacturer. When rig problems develop, and you can't fix them yourself, you have to bite the bullet somewhat. You just have to work with them to determine the most expeditious way of resolving the problem. By the way, if I had to guess, I'd bet Gary is probably close to right in his suggestion, but since he can't be positive, he obviously can't give you any guarantees. Unless some other option comes to mind, I'd probably just send the rig in and be done with it. Besides, there is usually the additional benefit of them possibly identifying other anomalies, which they could then deal with without necessitating another trip back and forth. Kind of like getting a 20,000 mile service on your car! Hi Ken … Just checked the Fair-rite website, and the type 31 cores are indeed there. But they aren't easy to find. You need to go to Products then Cable components then EMI suppression beads. They have a wide variety of part numbers using type 31 material. I buy mine from Mouser which has no minimum order quantities, good stocking, reasonable prices and wonderful delivery and service. I can't speak to their service to Canada. I've bought many different PNs of type 31 from them. After you find the PNs you are interested in from the Fair-rite site, do a search on those PNs in the Mouser site. [Elecraft] How to turn off the KPA500?
At the risk of embarassing myself I am curious as to how folks are tuning off their KPA500. That is, do you just use the front panal button or both the front panel botton and the rear panel rocker switch, once the fan stops? I understand the need for both, that the fan won't run and deplete the power supply without power from the rear rocker switch. But are people leaving the rear switch on when done for the night? Also, should we run the KPA500 through a surge protector? With the current draw, it would probably be a dedicated surge protector. At the moment I have it plugged directly into the wall. All my other equipment, except an Alpha that uses 230v, is surge protected. i unplug the Alpha when off air for a long time or when an electrical storm is brewing. Not a big issue. Just curious what is the best operating practice here. Re: [Elecraft] KX1 has LED switching noise
Paul, There is a very small amount of that noise on any KX1, but it is not enough to raise the noise floor of the receiver. If the noise in your KX1 is large enough to interfere with weak signals, then it is excessive and should be fixed. [Elecraft] Normal KPA500 behavior?
Hi, My KPA500 does a couple of things that seem a bit odd. Other KPA owners - do your KPAs also do the following? 1) When I transmit a 500 watt carrier while displaying TEMP the displayed temperature drops 5 degrees C. When I release the key the temperature goes immediately back to the real value. Lower transmit power levels cause a correspondingly lower drop in displayed temp. This behavior causes the temp display to bounce around while transmitting CW. 2) When I power down my KPA the fan turns on (as it should) and then the right most POWER LED flashes on an off quickly. It gives much more accurate readings of L and C than the LC readings on my fancy digital VOM, and it's a great help when winding and/or debugging toroids and identifying capacitors with tiny cryptic markings or none at all. Of course, you need a VOM, maybe a nice signal generator like the XG-3, and an RF probe for your VOM. I love my scope but it's certainly not a necessity. Re: [Elecraft] How much is enough?
Frank, Build your array of test equipment around your needs - and build it up as you have need. If you are building kit radios, then you may only need a DMM and a good dummy load. OTOH, if you are designing and testing your own experimental designs or building from a schematic you discovered, you may need more than that. An oscilloscope is really a handy tool, and a frequency counter is also good to have. A precision dummy load and an oscilloscope with a 10X probe will allow you to measure RF power - of course, the Elecraft DL1 qualifies and has a built-in detector diode. An RF Probe will work in many cases in place of the oscilloscope. Signal generators are also good to have - the Elecraft XG3 is quite a versatile generator You need a PC with a soundcard at the workbench - so you can run Spectrogram or SpectrumLab and have a mini-DB and mini-Ring-Core calculators available - there is a lot that you can do with a PC on the workbench. I would refer you to the Measurements chapter of Experimental Methods in RF Design (ARRL Publication) for a more complete list of test equipment. The degree of precision you need/want to achieve will dictate your selection of equipment. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/10/2012 2:11 PM, Frank MacDonell wrote: I like building QRP radios. Hi and thanks for the replies. However, I think people are misunderstanding my question about the TEMP display. When I hit the key to send a 500 watt carrier the display instantly drops 5 degrees C and instantly goes back up to the real temperature when I release the key. Re: [Elecraft] Normal KPA500 behavior?
1. Key down [or RTTY TX], mine rises, fan steps up, temp stabilizes. When I unkey, temp begins to fall. Sending CW, temp may fall a deg or so when I first send, then it rises. It usually rises another deg or so after I stop sending before falling again. I figure it's thermal inertia for the PA heat to propagate to the sensor. 2. The 700 LED flashes once during the fan power-down cycle. 3. Tapping AUX QSY's the K3 to 10m. [Elecraft] [OT][MM]: Announcement of Test Bench Mini-Module Enclosures now available
I've been under the weather the last couple of days, so I decided that while I was laying around on the couch, I may as well do something productive like finally update my website ;-) So here is the formal announcement of my Test Bench line of mini-module enclosures. I've been making them for the last couple of years and selling them by word of mouth (keyboard). Here is a link to the Test Bench Enclosure page on my site: http://w8fgu.home.comcast.net/~w8fgu/tbencl.html These enclosures were designed through the suggestions of Don Wilhelm, W3FPR, who wanted the ability to stack the modules, in their enclosures, on top of each other when stowed away to save on bench top footprint and provide better organization for finding them again ;-) I made the dimensions of these enclosures all the same for that purpose. I dimensioned them for the module with the largest width (CP1) and longest length (BL2). The exception was the AT1 enclosure which is the same width, but slightly longer to accommodate PCB length (it serves as a nice base for the others). All connectors (BNC, power, RCA etc.) have been externalized for easy access and a sliding top provided to access any other controls on the PCB for each module. The top slides in a track at the top of the enclosure and is held in place by a magnetic strip. An optional power switch may also be provided for modules that have a power switch. This upgrade provides the switch, installed on the enclosure, with a pair of hookup wires pre-soldered to the switch for later attachment to the PCB power switch. The Test Bench line consists of enclosures for the following Elecraft mini-Modules:* *- 2T-gen 2-Tone Test Oscillator - AT1 41 dB HF/VHF Switched Attenuator - BL2 Wideband 1:1 4:1 (Switchable) 250W Balun - CP1 Directional Coupler - DL1 Wideband 20W Dummy Load - N-gen Wideband Noise Generator - XG2 Three Band Receiver Test Oscillator / S-Meter Calibrator I will continue to provide the initial design of enclosures for the BL2 and DL1 as they are more field use friendly. All of these enclosures are made from polycarbonate sheet which is quite strong and should hold up to the rigors of bouncing around and occasional dropping. Feel free to contact me off list for any other questions, comments or concerns. Re: [Elecraft] Normal KPA500 behavior?
Mike, that sounds like a voltage drop under load, i.e. lower voltage to the temp measurement sensor and thus a lower reading under load. Maybe time to contact Elecraft support? Frank... I grew up in the era of Tektronix 'scopes, etc. but now that I'm fully grown (for the moment) I would like to suggest the following: (a) If you really want an ancient boat anchor/piece of iron and aluminum, then look no further than the myriad ads in eBay's Ham Radio section, but (b) if you want something that is handy, look into the PicoScope family, e.g. the PicoScope 2104 / 2105. These are hand-held digital scopes the size of an old-style Tektronix PROBE, and work with the computer that Don Wilhelm has already suggested as being a necessity. Their published data is 100 times more detailed and informative than any of their competitors. A lot of what I know about ferrite materials I've learned by studying their published data. To get as much and as good data as theirs you've got to go back at least three decades to publications like the huge data books published by companies like National, Motorola, GE, Fairchild, and RCA for their semiconductors and tubes, and Electro-Voice for their microphones and loudspeakers. Historically, Fair-Rite has also very good about supplying engineering samples for those doing real design work. When I first began the studies that led to all of the work I've published, Fair-Rite provided me with hundreds of samples of several dozen parts I requested, never asking anything beyond the normal questions a regional rep would ask. It's paid off for them -- the #31 toroids EXIST because I asked for them, and thanks at least in part to the work I've published on using multi-turn chokes, the #31 material has replaced older materials for suppression at MF and HF. 73, Jim Brown K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] How to turn off the KPA500?
That's a very legitimate question Fred. With modern gear containing processors (like the KPA500, K3, etc.), it's always a good idea to shut it down using the front-panel power switch. This ensures that the processor gets to do an orderly shut down, just as it's always good to shut down a pc using the keyboard instead of just pulling the plug. There is a very small current drain after it is shut down. That's the current required to keep the logic alive so it can detect when you press the POWER button to turn it on again. That's the same sort of drain your TV, cable box, etc., all have when supposedly off. Switching off the power on the back panel will stop that drain if it's of concern to you. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- At the risk of embarassing myself I am curious as to how folks are tuning off their KPA500. Re: [Elecraft] Normal KPA500 behavior?
Hi Mike: I'm sure that LED flash is quite normal. Mine has done that since day one. I do not experience the jumping temp readings though. A couple of speculations: 1 - Does it do that when the amp is connected to a dummy load? (Thinking maybe an RF feedback issue.) 2 - What's your line voltage and how much does it sag under full load? (Thinking that possibly a low line voltage is causing a voltage regulator in the sensor circuit to drop out and lose regulation.) Re: [Elecraft] Monitor (OT)
I have received enough replies to report the trend. With one exception no problems were reported. The list of brands was most of the mid to major names such as Dell, LG, HP, Acer, ViewSonic, Planar, ASUS. The exceptions were Samsung. Not all Samsung monitors were reported as problematic. Many were OK. An older one had display problems when the user was on 80. This may or may not have been the result of RF in the shack. No way to tell. It seems the one to avoid is Samsung models with soft of virtual buttons. These could be activated during transmission. Units with real buttons seemed to be OK. There are some mystery brands out there that were not mentioned so no conclusion for them can be drawn. Bottom line: It appears that if you stick with recognized brands and avoid trick things like soft buttons you should be OK. However there are no guarantees. [Elecraft] KPA500 Z Bracket Top Cover
Just finished a KPA500 build and all went smoothly. The only issue I see is that the Z-Bracket appears to be about 1mm taller at the front than at the rear. The result is that the top cover protrudes above the front panel in the center by a small amount, perhaps 1mm. [Elecraft] [K3] New 472kHz LF band
This has been asked before and Wayne has indicated that K3 cannot be extended below 490-KHz. I am using my K3 on the 495-510 KHz experimental band as a driver for a 100w transmitter (4.15w ERP). You need the KXV3 transverter I/F and the KBPF3 general coverage filter for the K3 to operate on 500-KHz. Then you operate at 0 dBm output by entering the TEST mode. You need some linear amplification for useful transmit power. For the new band ERP=1w implies an amp with 25w output. To extend use of the K3 lower in frequency a transverter can be made. Look at: http://www.kl7uw.com/600m_XVTR.jpg But there is another solution: The KX3 will tune to 310-KHz if you have the internal ATU. Wayne wrote me that they have not determined if an external LP filters will be needed, so look at: http://w1vd.com/LPF.pdf Also they are not sure what the KX3 output power level will be (my guess 20mw -1w).
