[Elecraft] [P3] Missing Waterfall
In helping a friend today I noticed that he didn't have a waterfall on his P3 display. So, I tried to adjust it and nothing helped. I updated him to 1.13 hoping that at least that would allow a reset. If I go to the Waterfall menu selection and adjust it it seems normal but there is still no waterfall display when finished. Checked the cabling but don't think that's the problem since he as the normal display, less waterfall. I decided he must be out of water and suggested he pour a quart or so in the top of the P3 but he didn't think that would help. :-) Very strange indeed. everything seems to function fine except the waterfall. Re: [Elecraft] k1 speaker output wimpy
Yes, and if the speaker does not have an airtight seal between it and the baffle (the cover on the rig in this case) the mid and lower frequencies will be highly attenuated. When the cone moves forward on a bare speaker, the air pressure created simply moves around the edges and fills the partial vacuum created behind. The end result is no sound pressure waves leaving the speaker. The only waves created are those high enough in frequency that the outer part of the speaker acts as a self-baffle, leaving only a small center portion of the speaker to produce a sound pressure wave. Re: [Elecraft] Would a matching speaker be nice??
A spreadsheet analysis may lead one to conclude that the project is unworthy. But, the spreadsheet does not have field types to include the value of visual impact upon the whole. Or, a measure of "completeness" of the product line. Or measure the negative impact of having to re-purpose a speaker system that looks like it ought to be in the room of one's teenage son. I would postulate that there are many folks who would gladly shell out $150 or more for a matching speaker. Drake got it right. The speaker cabinet was large enough to also hold the power supply. What did the power supply and the speaker have in common? Nothing. But everyone needed a power supply and everyone needed a speaker. And, the speaker very nicely completed the 4-Line. In fact, a 4-Line looks naked without the speaker. But, that doesn't fit in the spreadsheet either. Engineering without art is less than it could be. Not all business decisions should be made with a spreadsheet.. 73, Doug, W7KF http://www.w7kf.com On 04/20/2012 06:50 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: > Steve, > > This subject comes up from time to time, and the result (so far) has > always been the same - an Elecraft speaker must be priced much higher > than its value to the Elecraft principles. Re: [Elecraft] Would a matching speaker be nice??
How about a speaker cabinet with mounting holes such that a commonly available power supply could be mounted inside? With a slot on the back panel for the incoming and outgoing power leads? All it would take would be a loose alliance with a power supply company like Samlex for example. Elecraft would not be in the power supply business and wouldn't have to support power supplies. They would just be offering a valued accessory that would complete the product line and be bolt-in ready for those who wanted a new power supply. 73, Doug, W7KF http://www.w7kf.com On 04/20/2012 05:43 PM, redtar...@nycap.rr.com wrote: > I wonder if Elecraft might consider offering a nice, matching, external > speaker for the K2/3 line?. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K2/10 SSB operating notes
I run a K2/10 on a Southern AZ RACES Home Unit 75 meter SSB net every Saturday morning. I am heard by everyone in Southern Arizona. The main point of the net is to encourage stations to maintain and operate on a backup power source. I maybe 10 db weaker, but I have about 50 pounds less battery then the 100 watt stations. I check into a state wide RACES net on Sunday mornings and almost all stations copy me. I guess I think every Amateur should have a 10 watt station. Especially if they have more then one transceiver in their station. I admit I have the 100 amp for the K2 and several older vintage stations and a amp with a 3-500Z and I use them all at different times, but if I could only have one station it would be the K2/10. [Elecraft] Elecraft W2 on 70MHz band
Greetings list, I recently added the W2 to monitor the power output at M0PCB on HF and VHF with the K3 and amplifiers. For this it is great, I particularly like the speed at which it reacts to the output power. I am in the process of adding an external transverter so i can make use of my K3 and P3 on the 70MHz band, and that got me thinking about the W2. 1) I know the DCHF-200a is specified to 54MHz but how would the unit perform up to 70.5MHz? 2) As I already have the DC2000a and DCV/U-200a sensors attached is there an easy way to add a third sensor to the set-up? I realise I could add another W2 to the shack but that seems overkill and I can certainly more easily justify a 3rd sensor above a 2nd W2 at the present time. Will try to look out for any responses to the list, but I use the daily digest and am prone to skim reading ;-) Many thanks for any input, and thanks to Elecraft for a great radio. 73, Iain M0PCB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Is there a piece of external software that can be used to adjust the K3's TX and RX equalizers via computer? I know about K3_EZ which did accomplish this task plus several other nice features, but I was only able to get it to work one time and that was a long time ago. Now, I cannot even get the program to install and I've tried several different computers. Perhaps there's another one out there that has escaped my notice or maybe someone is toiling away over a hot keyboard, working on this very task, as I write this. Plus... if the audio levels are properly set, the distortion levels should be very low. Certainly, the distortions of the RF signal due to propagation would be worse than the conversion distortions. If you use the on-board method of sending RTTY or PSK31, you would get the benefit of not having to convert analog audio to digital, etc. 73 de Ray K2ULR On Apr 20, 2012, at 1:09 PM, Jim Brown wrote: > On 4/20/2012 9:36 AM, Bill Frantz wrote: >> With a K3, the audio starts in digital form in the DSP. >> Converting it to analog to convert it back to digital for input >> to the computer can only introduce distortion. >> >> I'm lobbying Elecraft for a direct digital interface. > > Yes, but -- there is the issue of the FORMAT of the digital data, both > from the points of view of encoding and of physical interface, > which are > likely to be quite different within the radio and the computer, and > the > two systems must be able to talk to each other. Wayne, I just sold my K2 to a friend so that I would have space for the KX3 that should be coming soon. He's running 5-10 Watts with an antenna in the attic that is really less than optimum, yet he's working all sorts of DX with the reports you're getting from a net close by. [Elecraft] KX3 SSB operating notes
Believe it or not, every once in awhile I get a break from firmware/ manuals/etc. and actually get on the air. I was just listening on 40 m SSB this morning with the KX3 and decided to do a little experiment. I shut off the 13.8-V external power supply I usually use with the KX3, so the rig was running from the internal NiMH pack. I set power to 5 W, which the KX3 can deliver even with the supply voltage reading around 9 volts key-down. I located one of the many daytime nets on 40 m LSB, tuned up the internal ATU on my random wire (not on frequency, of course!) and checked into the net. No sweat. I got a 5-7 report from the net control station, a few hundred miles away, despite my electrically short antenna that's only 15 feet off the ground. For this contact I was using a Radio Shack headset/mic designed for use with computers. It has two 3.5-mm stereo plugs, one for mic, the other for stereo audio. The sound quality is surprisingly good. One really nice thing about this particular headset is that I don't need to touch the MIC BIAS or MIC BTN settings that I use with the Elecraft MH3. I just switch to VOX rather than PTT. Dual watch also comes in handy on 40-m LSB at this time of day. While I was listening to a net on 7268.5 with VFO B (in the right audio channel), I was tuning around looking for other nets or CQs +/- 15 kHz from this frequency with VFO A (in the left channel). As I was writing this, the KX3's AUTO-OFF timer kicked in and shut down the rig, saving my batteries :) 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] SMT and the K3 - Nerves
I install a good number of SMDs. I use much the same process as Ron D'Eau Claire mentions in his post and have never damaged a board. The dental instruments have been a part of my three tool boxes for two dozen years and are very handy. I've never had a problem removing an SMD by cutting it in half with very small, sharp flush cutters. One thing that I experimented with for SMD mounting in tight situations is the use of a small model airplane fuel pump. Available at most hobby shops, the fuel pump is a small, inexpensive electric motor with neoprene fuel lines attached to the input and output. They are used to pump model airplane engine fuel from the storage tank into the model's fuel tank at the flying field. For SMD installation I only use the "inlet" line and free air, not fuel ;o) I cut the end of a 36" long neoprene fuel inlet line as square as I can. I power the fuel pump with a small 12V power supply I have on my bench. Once the pump is on, I use the vacuum of the inlet tube to suck onto the top of the SMD component (different size tubes can be adapted to accommodate larger or smaller SMD devices.) The suction holds the SMD device quite firmly while I work the end of the tube to maneuver the SMD into place. And, it continues to hold while I solder one end to the board. After that, my fuel pump "third hand" is set aside until the next time its needed. While this may sound a bit extreme, the idea came to me one day after "launching" half a dozen SMD devices across the room with tweezers. I had "launched" a few distinct "expletives" as well. You know what they say: "Frustration is the mother of invention". Or, something like that. ;o) Terry, W0FM -Original Message- From: Ron D'Eau Claire [mailto:r...@cobi.biz] Sent: Thursday, April 19, 2012 4:23 PM To: 'Elecraft Discussion List' Subject: Re: [Elecraft] SMT and the K3 - Nerves Keep in mind that all of the step-by-step procedures in the Elecraft documents were actually done by the writer, tested by others, and then refined and improved by customer feedback. So if you take the time to follow them closely, you are getting the benefit of the experience of a great many others who have been there before you. I have removed hundreds of two-terminal SMDs both by cutting them in half or by unsoldering one end at a time and lifting the part with never any damage to the pcb. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

It does a decent job converting 1280x1024 RGB video to composite and S-Video. A cable from its RCA output direct to a TV looks pretty good. Once I introduce the Slingbox, it all falls apart. One problem is that my slingbox classic set for my maximum upload speed of 768 kilobits/sec really degrades the video just as Daniel predicted it would. It is still usable but hard to look at. The main difficulty is that the Slingbox introduces a six-second buffer delay. This just doesn't work for tuning a radio and watching the results. Back to the drawing board. I see that Grandstream makes a fairly inexpensive ($120) video server (GXV3501) aimed at the security market. Has anyone used one of these who can give input on the buffer delay before I waste the bucks? One suggestion has been the Axis servers but they are half a kilobuck. A bit rich for this. Re: [Elecraft] put together for kx3 kit?
Joe, The KX3 assembly manual is not out yet, and they are refining the hardware assembly steps. The kit has no discreet components - unless you can classify a speaker assembly as a discreet component. There are 2 main boards in the KX3 and each option is an additional board. Construction should not take too long - assemble the enclosure and mount the boards - everything plugs together - no soldering required. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/20/2012 9:39 AM, af6ni wrote: > I have the same question. Re: [Elecraft] put together for kx3 kit?
Last I heard (middle of last week?) they were still putting together the kit assembly manual, and making minor modifications to the hardware. I am sure there will be a reaction when the kit manual becomes available for download, both here and on the KX3 group. I too am quite curious about this, I am expecting it to be a 2-3 hour job and probably a bit tricky in places, considering the amount of electronics squeezed into that small space. I'm expecting at least 4-5 boards including the ATU and battery charger. 73, Thomas M0TRN On 20 April 2012 14:39, af6ni wrote: > I have the same question. Matt, You take the levels one at a time. Set the K3 Line Out to 9 or 10, then adjust your soundcard Line in slider so you have good printing on the screen. Then out the K3 in TX TEST - set the soundcard Line out (or volume) slider to about 2/3 of the scale, then adjust the K2 Line in gain to produce 4 full bars of ALC indication with the 5th bar flickering.
