Re: [Elecraft] OT: Distinguishable angular momentum in radio photons?
Oh, and the first thing I looked at was whether it was in the April issue. It was not. Maybe the IEEE got it from another publication's April issue? -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Erik Basilier Sent: Thursday, May 03, 2012 10:10 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] OT: Distinguishable angular momentum in radio photons? The May 2012 issue of the IEEE Spectrum magazine reports that researchers in Italy and Sweden were able to conduct two separate instances of radio communication on the exact same frequency, without increasing bandwidth, and without time-division multiplexing, be making the transmissions differ in angular momentum. One transmission used linear polarization, and the other was given angular momentum by means of a dish with a radial cut, where the metal was bent backwards/forwards on the two sides of the cut. Apparently this is not just a case of linear vs circular polarization, as circular polarization can be readily picked up by a linearly polarized antenna, and apparently the two channels did not interfere with each other. The researchers claim that this demonstration points to the possibility that the radio photons can be given multiple, quanized levels of angular momentum, making possible several more communication channels without increased bandwidth. Other researchers say that this is just a form of MIMO. Wikipedia describes MIMO as the technique of using multiple antennas as in diversity reception or in gain increases obtained by phasing the antennas. My apologies if this is too far OT. 73, Erik K7TV __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Thanks, Mike. I saw that, but then what? I don't get a send/rev screen for CM. The MLDX help is a tad sparse, and the screen shots don't look much like what I have. Re: [Elecraft] [K3} CocoaModem MacLoggerDX
Thanks, Bill. LOL Yeah, got the activate button. What do you mean by codecs? Setting I/O to the iMic? It shows in the dialogs, and is selected. Tx is OK now, the level wasn't high enough to trip the VOX. I heartily dislike VOX! I'm getting an indication on all the receive indicators. As luck would have it, apparently all the RTTY ops are taking the day off, except for one that went QRT as soon as I found his signal. Now the challenge is finding the window that shows and takes he text. After that, I'll try it from both the logging programs. 73, Mike NF4L On 5/4/12 12:53 AM, Bill Frantz wrote: I have been using cocoaModem for a couple of years now on 3 separate rigs, including a K3. I use a Signalink USB and am not familiar with the iMic dongle. However, you should see it in the dialogs as an alternative to Built-in input/output. When debugging these things, seeing any kind of audio input on the waterfall tells you that input is working. Hook up a microphone or play a CD/iPod etc and be sure you can see it. (If you can see the input you can also hear when you turn up the AF control on the radio, than that path should be working and you should be able to decode digital signals. On output, it sounds like the output of the sound card isn't getting to the K3. Check the cable between the card and line-in on the K3. Also check that the multitude of K3 config settings are correct. (The manual is quite good for getting them right.) You should be in Data-A mode on the K3. I have been using RumLog, but I don't have the interface to cocoaModem set up and just transfer the data with cut/paste. Two years ago, on a much slower mac, the automatic connection tended to freeze both of them requiring force-quit to recover, embarrassing during a QSO. [Elecraft] Screwdriver antennas in salt fog? [was: RE: High Sierra in qst]
It seems that High Sierra is like a number of other screwdriver antenna companies that live in California or Arizona, where they never encounter winter weather with the salt fog spray that is common when driving in northen climates in the winter time. I rebuilt my 1800HS so many times I finally tired of it (the guide on the mast finally fell off, because the tiny screws threads through the thin mast all stripped out), and decided to get a HiQ, based on recommendations from a friend (unfortunately, he lives in Tennessee and so doesn't see the kind of winter weather I get in SE Michigan). After one winter on a trailer hitch mount behind my Durango, the antenna quit working (motor stalled), and I sent it back for repair. Charlie at HiQ called me and asked what did you DO to this antenna? I said, Nothing special, just used it on my vehicle over a Michigan winter. According to Charlie, the inside of the mast was solid salt rock crystal. To his credit, although I think at the time the antenna was just out of warranty, he replaced the entire unit for free. So, I used it through that next summer, but by November, I had traded my Durango in for a Ram pickup, and wanted to change the mount to a stake-mount on the pick up bed just behind the cab, for clearance for a 5th wheel tow, and also to try to keep it out of the salt fog. I actually never got around to mounting it until a few weeks ago, and had left the antenna stored in the garage over the winter. When I tried it out, the motor was stuck again. I've not had time to contact HiQ again, and I understand that Charlie sold/transferred the ham radio portion of the business to someone else, so he can concentrate on DoD contracts, which I'm sure are much more lucrative than the ham trade. I fear that this time I'll end up having to pay to replace the antenna, and these things are definitely not cheap. So, long story short (too late): Is there anyone on the list using somebody's much-vaunted screwdriver design that has actually survived northen winters where they use salt on the roads, without a lot of maintenance headaches? I would think that with the advent of the KX3, a lot more folks on this list will be considering going HF mobile. 73, -- Dave, N8SBE __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Problem with Elecraft's built in 2 meter receiver
NG5E wonders if Larry and I are new to using a VFO on the 2-meter band, but that is not the case, and tuning does not seem to be the issue. The Elecraft support staff (both Dale and Howard) have been quite attentive and helpful. They have offered to check out the K3 in its entirety. We are not criticizing Elecraft support. We have heard from a few people with a similar problem. It may well be a function of the local repeaters, not the transverter or the K3. We are attempting to find out the transmit bandwidth of the repeaters in question (which could be wider than the 13kHz filter), and we are asking another local K3 owner to determine if he also gets distortion or clipping on the same repeater. 73, Julie Royster KT4JR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [K3} CocoaModem MacLoggerDX
Mike, For RTTY I much prefer using RUMlog. I have it set to use the K3 for transmit (FSK-D) and CCM for receive. Works great and, of course, since you are using the internal RTTY screen from RUMlog it is nicely integrated with the log and since it's FSK-D you can use your serial connection for PTT. Also, if you are a DX'er you will probably be happier with RUMlog as your logger. Since Tom (DL2RUM) is a DX'er it is very well done for DX'er's needs including an excellent color coded cluster screen that even shows Marathon needs if desired. 73, Rick K6LE __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] JT65A and the K3
Hello RC, I am not sure exactly what your question is, but I will offer some information that may be of interest to you. I currently use a K3 here at home for all my 6m EME operations (all of which use JT65A mode from the most recent WSJT software package). I also have used it on my recent 6m EME DXpeditions to E51, 3D2 and 5W0. A few of the reasons I think it is such a perfect radio for 6m EME are the following: 1. Of course, it automatically includes 6m, so any DXpedition taking a K3 is automatically equipped for 6m. 2. It has a built-in computer interface, so all you need is to connect stereo audio leads from your computer sound card, along with an RS232 cable from the computer to control the PTT function via the RTS serial line (a MENU option from the front panel). So the K3 is also digital ready! 3. The bandpass is essentially FLAT for more than 800 Hz either side of the JT65A center frequency, so it is easy to spot spread-out callers with equal sensitivity. 4. The K3'a optional KXV3a module provides IF output, along with separate BNC connections for transverters. It also provides convenient receiver-only line in and out, for connection of a separate receive antenna or insertion of a low noise receive-only preamp (a necessity for weak signal work on 6m). 5. It has a GREAT IF noise blanker, that has saved me more than once while operating in the field. 6. Unlike some radios, it has the ability to turn the AGC totally OFF, which is quite helpful with WSJT weak signal digital modes. 7. With the 100w option, you have enough power to drive popular commercial 6m amps such as the ACOM 1000, ACOM 1006, ALPHA 8406, M2 6M-1000, ICOM PW-1, and many others. 8. It weighs only 12 pounds, so is easily transportable to rare and exotic locations. Last summer during Es season on 6m, I was amazed to contact so many new K3 owners trying out 6m for the first time! That is the beauty of having such a high performance radio that includes the Magic Band ;-) The current Es season is just beginning now (even way up here in western Montana!), so stick up a good 6m beam and get ready to join in on the magic! Re: [Elecraft] Problem with Elecraft's built in 2 meter receiver
IIRC, when I installed mine I had to touch up the offsets a bit to get good audio. Now it sounds good transmit and receive. Got the counter out and touched up the HF freq, then did the 2 meter. Keyed up into dummy load and dialed in the frequency that was on the display by changing the offset. Re: [Elecraft] first post test and kx1 power issues
My bench voltage is 14 volts and battery is measured at 12.4 VDC Tried a new and better dummy load and got 3watts on both bands with bench supply and 2 watts on 40M and 3 watts on the battery. I used an RF probe on the output with the battery supply I got 5.6V on 14M and 5.3 on 40M These are pretty close. I am wondering if perhaps the W1 is exaggerating the differences? I have since smoked the radio with probe so now will have to replace some components for sure. Re: [Elecraft] [K3} CocoaModem MacLoggerDX
Mike, The lack of rotor control hasn't affected me and my dipole much! Setting RUMlog up to run FSK-D you don't need any interface. In fact even in other digital modes I don't use an interface between my iMac and the K3. In FSK-D rumlog keys the FSK in the K3 via serial connection and if you use the K3 onboard decoder you don't even need any audio cables. I use at least one audio cable so that I can use CCM for decoding. I find that's more flexible. Rick K6LE On 5/4/2012, at 11:40 , Mike n...@nf4l.com wrote: I really do like RumLog. Joe, I have done many of them, and while soldering down in the hole to the connector pin is a bit of a challenge, I have not found a better way. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Distinguishable angular momentum in radio photons?
This is the debunking saying that this is more or less a special case of MIMO - Multiple Input Multiple Output - communications, i.e. using multiple antennas on the rx and tx sides: Is orbital angular momentum (OAM) based radio communication an unexploited area? Ove Edfors and Anders J Johansson, IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ANTENNAS AND PROPAGATION, 2012 http://www.lunduniversity.lu.se/o.o.i.s?id=12683postid=2062936 Abstract: We compare the technique of using the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of radio waves for generating multiple channels in a radio communication scenario with traditional multiple-in-multiple-out (MIMO) communication methods. We demonstrate that, for certain array configurations in free space, traditional MIMO theory leads to eigen-modes identical to the OAM states. From this we conclude that communicating over the sub-channels given by OAM states is a subset of the solutions offered by MIMO, and therefore does not offer any additional gains in capacity. - Sverre, LA3ZA K2 #2198, K3 #3391 LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 modifications -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/OT-Distinguishable-angular-momentum-in-radio-photons-tp7525974p7528491.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I'm absolutely serious about this, Steve. (There's a somewhat subtle parallel illustration here = where a parish takes communion to its home-bound parishioners.) Can you see what I am calling for? I'm saying that there is doubtless a considerable part of the What I am suggesting will no doubt draw derision and even quick ire from some or even many. Why, they will reason, these prizes are, as it were, *door prizes*. How can you possibly think that those who do not attend this event, ie those who do not go through the door, should somehow be eligible for prizes? And in one sense they are correct, as anyone can plainly see. But I am speaking on behalf of, and as one of, those who simply will never be able to go to Dayton--ever, no matter how much I might dream about it. But this is mostly about thousands of QRPers who will never be able to go. They simply can't take the time off from their TWO or sometimes even THREE jobs. Or mebbe they have too little moneyor too many physical challenges. Some may be single parents. A few simply can't stray that far from their carefully articulated medical life-support system. Someone very reasonably will point out the painfully obvious = Yes, well, mebbe I'm just barely beginning to sorta understand and *maybe* accept your argument here. Okay, how do we implement it, then? Ah, there's the rub. OTOH it might be quite simple. A starting point could be for each Dayton-bound QRPer simply to nominate up to X number of QRPers she or he knows will not be going this year. Then there is self-nomination, and there are a number of significant QRP contests from which a net log of participants could be drawn. Perhaps the various QRP-oriented dealers would be willing to provide a list of every licensed QRPer who has made purchases above a certain amount. ARCI membership rolls would of course be a rich source of data. Then using some sort of algorhythm these lists could be filtered and refined and compared to eliminate those actually going to Dayton, and VOILA, there's your list. And of course this is only indicative, certainly not exhaustive. Tony, mebbe this is a nutty idea from beginning to end. Or mebbe not. Just maybe there is some merit in my proposal. I'll be interested to hear. 73, Doc/k0EVZ Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry -Original Message- From: Steve, G4GXL st...@g4gxl.com Sender: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net Date: Fri, 4 May 2012 17:24:51 To: QRP-Lqr...@mailman.qth.net; Elecraft Reflectorelecraft@mailman.qth.net Reply-To: st...@g4gxl.com Subject: [Elecraft] FDIM - please book online today if you can ! Re: [Elecraft] [K3} CocoaModem MacLoggerDX
By codecs, I mean the input and output sound cards you are using. My guess is that if you don't have enough output to trip the K3's VOX, you probably will have trouble reaching full output power. I can usually find some PSK types at 14.070 which might be a good receive test for you. The very top window is the waterfall. It is adjustable to be either 2KHz or 4Khz wide. The next window is the secondary receiver and the next is the primary receiver. The two receivers can be swapped using the Xcvr1/Xcvr2 control in the lower left. The receiver on the bottom controls the transmit frequency. The very bottom window is the composition window for your transmissions. What you type appears here. If you press the Transmit button it will be sent. The receive frequency can be adjusted using the arrow keys. These adjustments will not affect the transmit frequency, unlike clicking on the waterfall which will change both frequencies. Hold down the apple key to use the arrow keys on Xcvr1. Add the Control key to change Xcvr2. Clicking with Control down changes Xcvr2's frequency. What I usually do during a QSO is use the upper Xcvr to auto-tune the other station which keeps my transmit frequency constant so we don't walk the band. There are macro buttons across the bottom which can make operation easier. I always copy the other station's call into the Call window at the bottom so I can use my init-Call macro -- %[tx]%C %C %C de %c %c %c KN\n%[rx] -- to try to respond to his call without having to type it correctly hihi. This macro turns on transmit (%[tx]), sends his call 3 times (%C), sends mine 3 times (%c) and returns to receive (%[rx]). My call is set in the User Info window where I can add /P for portable or /1 when in New Hampshire. Cheers - Bill, AE6JV On 5/4/12 at 5:42, n...@nf4l.com (Mike) wrote: LOL Yeah, got the activate button. Re: [Elecraft] Just worked my first KX3!
Just had my first Olivia contact using my KX3. ( Olivia 4/500) On 80m before I called the Virginia Digital Traffic net. Set at 5 watts into 75 meter OCF up about 45 ft. External SWR meter said about 2.5 watts to antenna with 2.7:1 SWR. Was W4FMD's Got up to about 45C. While not a KX1 on the other end K3 on the other end. Did not call the state wide net with the KX3, rather switched back to my K3 at 75 watts out ( rotten conditions). After net called a NY station using Olivia 156/500 on the KX3 but he did not hear me. Dave - K9FN Sent from my Samsung smartphone on ATT Dave New, N8SBE n8...@arrl.net wrote: It seems that High Sierra is like a number of other screwdriver antenna companies that live in California or Arizona, where they never encounter winter weather with the salt fog spray that is common when driving in northen climates in the winter time. 73, -- Dave, N8SBE __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Thanks for the speedy replies. I should also add that the only thing I did was remove my K3 from the shack and take it with me for use at a remote location for the 7-land QSO party this weekend. I gently put it on the car seat and drove to the remote site here in Arizona. When I plugged the K3 in, the power output wouldn't go above 12 watts. It was moved around, but not roughly in any way. I took off the top cover and checked the voltage at the PA -- the 12v was present. Also, when I turned on the rig I received some strangeHigh Current and 12v alerts and then those went away. RX is good and the rig otherwise operates fine, but anything about 12w is a no-go. I didn't know the KX1 does 10 meters. For 40 meters, 24 feet of wire seems rather short. Putting an external loading coil in series with the wire might allow you to get the swr down to a reasonable value. How efficient it will be is another question, especially with only 16 foot radials. 73 - Mike WA8BXN ---Original Message--- From: ka2zey Date: 5/4/2012 11:52:53 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Antenna for a KX1 I have tried the suggested lengths given for KX1. I am able to get A good SWR reading on 10 and 20 (still no contacts) but 40 is nothing below 4:1. Am I doing something wrong? Another user posted that they were using 42' with a 1/4 wave radial for each Band. [Elecraft] K3 IO board RFI mods
Hi All, Bought a July 2010 K3 that was factory built. Took it apart to install another filter (getting ready to operate W2H special event this Sunday from Lakehurst Naval Air Station, 75th anniversary of Hindenburg disaster). Since I run the TX audio, PC IN OUT, and RS-232 I checked to see if the inductors were jumped out. The radio has a version XD audio IO board. I performed the mods as per the tech note. My question is the web site states it is supposed to be already done on new K3s. Is there a cutoff date or serial number when? My concern is how many more mods may not be done on this radio? 73 Dave wo2x -Original Message- From: ka2zey Sent: Friday, May 04, 2012 11:45 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Antenna for a KX1 I have tried the suggested lengths given for KX1. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Distinguishable angular momentum in radio photons?
Eric, thanks for posting the link to the original article, and thanks also to the others who responded to my post. Since nobody complained about the subject, I guess I can make these comments before the thread gets to be too long and too OT. I did get one private email from a list member who felt I was a non-technical person writing about things way beyond my education. Just in case a lot of readers may feel the same way, let me explain to the list. I felt that the startling claims of the article would make for a more interesting conversation topic than some other discussions on the reflector. I related the gist of the article without personally trying to either support or debunk the content. I have a PhD in Physics as well as a Masters in Engineering from long ago, but I would not take myself so seriously as to spend the effort to try to arrive at a personal evaluation of a subject that the active researchers (pro as well as con) spent many hours on. Without the intent of supporting or disproving the claimed results, and after reading the comments (but none of the original work), I make these basic observations: * Radio waves differ from light only by frequency, and are composed of photons if light is understood as composed of photons. * Photons have linear momentum although they don't have any rest mass. They also have two kinds of angular momentum, Spin Angular Momentum (SAM, with only two possible measured values), and Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM, which can have many). * The claim was not just that you can have two independent communications (as possible by means of circular polarization), but more than two. * The claim of multiple levels of angular momentum tells us that it is about OAM and not SAM. The abstract of the debunking research (thanks Sverre for posting) explicitly refers to OAM. * Debunking can have multiple meanings. Sometimes it can mean that the information in question is garbage. Sometimes it merely means that the information is not as new as claimed. In this case, the debunking might be of the second type (although I am not deeply enough in the issue to say it is). * Once one goes deep enough in physics, one finds that the laws of nature are just models that intend to mimic reality, and they are not reality itself. It may turn out that the claims made in this case bring nothing to our understanding, but there is not unusual in science to have situations where two theories explain the same phenomena in very different ways, and where neither theory can be pronounced incorrect. 73, Erik K7TV -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of erehm Sent: Friday, May 04, 2012 1:40 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] OT: Distinguishable angular momentum in radio photons? Re: [Elecraft] OT: Distinguishable angular momentum in radio photons?
Very cool, Erik. There is a lot of astounding discovery taking place right now in physics. Another extremely weird relatively recent finding is vector potential (VP) radiation, in which communications are conducted not by actual photons but by virtual photons with zero power (the ultimate QRP) and cannot be received with metallic antennas; the antennas used are fluorescent bulbs from camping lanterns! All these secrets of the universe that continue to be discovered.
