Re: [Elecraft] Please DO NOT leave alkaline batteries in your KX3, KX1, or K1 for any length of time
I already decided not to install batteries inside my KX3. But it was not primarily to avoid damage due to leakage of electrolyte. Opening and closing the KX3 seems a little delicate to me. One has to ensure the connecting wiring is intact and not being pinched. I just decided to use an external sealed acid-gel battery if I need to go portable. In the shack or mobile I will simply plug the power cord in. I do have NiMH batteries inside my MFJ-269B. I did try using alkaline batteries but they did not last long enough. The rechargeable NIMH have been installed about two years with no issues. I charge it using my 3A bench supply (current regulated). 2-4 hours on 14v does it. No leakage issues. Even with warrantees from manufacturers I would not trust alkaline's for long-term use. 73, Ed - KL7UW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Why did I purchase this antenna for the KX3?
I found this antenna shootout done in 2002 by the HFPacker group I'm a member of http://hfpack.com/antennas/shootoutreport2002.html This should give someone a good idea on the performance to be expected by a portable antenna setup. Before I retired I used to run QRP portable with an 817 from hotel rooms around the country, so I have years of experience with small antennas in hotel rooms. Before I retired, and when the last solar cycle ended I switched over to remoting and never looked back. The small antenna thing was just too painful for me anymore. 73 Jeff kb2m -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of David Gilbert Sent: Friday, November 30, 2012 0:45 AM To: Andrew Moore Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Why did I purchase this antenna for the KX3? By minimalist I'm referring not to the price, but to the construction of the antenna, if it's what people say it is. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Output issues in Tune
Hello George, You asked if there could be something wrong with a relay or relays. Some years ago I had a similar problem with my K2/100, but it appeared only on 40m. The cause was dirty relay contacts, rare in sealed relays, which sometimes also caused the receiver's sensitivity to decrease significantly - usually before transmitting.. The relay contacts in question were K1A (pins 3 and 4) located at the 40m bandpass filter. - If - your problem is caused by a faulty relay, then it is unlikely that any of the relays associated with the bandpass filters are to blame. While contrary to popular wisdom the contacts of a sealed relay can become dirty, the odds against this happening are very high, provided that the relay's sealed casing has not been punctured (e.g. by a hot iron) before or during the installation of the relay. Because you have found the problem on 80m, 15m and 10m, at least three of the relays associated with the bandpass filters would have to have dirty contacts - which is pushing the odds by a large degree. The same argument is applicable to the relays used to swirch the low pass filters, which leaves the relays within the ATU. To eliminate (or otherwise) one of the ATU's relays as being the cause of the problem, I suggest that you disconnect completely the ATU and connect your dummy load directly to the K2's antenna connector. If the problem persists, then an ATU relay is not the cause. My gut feeling is that a solder joint has become intermittent. Hope that you find the cause. 73, Geoff LX2AO On November 30, 2012 at 3:37 AM, George N9AUP wrote: My K2 (#7235) recently started to have intermittent issues with power output in tune. Sometimes I get the power I set for a given band and sometimes I don't. Just now, if I set the level at 10 watts for each band, they all work as expected (with a little dithering in the 10ths position) when I press Tune except for 80 meters where I get 5 watts and 10 meters where I get 8 watts. This morning I got 2.5 watts in 80 meters and returned later to find it spot on at 10 watts. In each case, mode was CW and the vfo set for the cw section for each band. Usually, if a band shows low power and I hold tune in for 5 seconds the output level will climb up roughly a watt. I first discovered the issue last week when 15 meters went bonkers with the forward power waving up and down quite rapidly. I immediately stopped, changed bands, saw normal behavior then went back to 15 meters and it was right where I had set it. At that point, all bands were ok and no further problems were observed. Yesterday, things were as described above. I have been testing with cables running from the rig through the SWR meter and into the station dummy. I did try an alternative dummy and checked the cables as well. If all bands acted the same, I'd be looking for a bias issue. Could there be something wrong in the relays? Re: [Elecraft] Leaky batteries, portable shortened antennas.
Don, the thumbscrews I referred to relate to the MFJ-259B, not the KX3. Sorry for the confusion. There's no problem with the KX3. I observed that the antenna analyzer spends most of its life sitting on a shelf and that means batteries can be forgotten about more easily. I thought it would be worthwhile to replace the two Phillips studs with a KX3-like thumbscrew. That would provide a little faster and easier removal/reinstallation of the access panel and encourage safer battery habits. I know you use rechargeables and keep it on a sustainer. But for those, like me, who prefer not to do that, thumbscrews offer another solution. It's amazing how the need for a small screwdriver can present such an (psychological?) obstacle to good judgement ;) 73, Stan WB2LQF. Re: [Elecraft] Why did I purchase this antenna for the KX3?
BUT, if whatever particular portable antenna you choose is sufficiently efficient for you, who am I to argue with your choice. Absolutely right..I submitted my original comment as an actual *user* of the Miracle Whip antenna who could describe my own personal experience with it, rather than speculate negatively. It is all about the Amateur Radio operator's needs, I too have a full size 80 metre dipole at home and when in the shack will use this as my main base antenna. However, I also have a 2 metre high Sandpiper HV6+3 HF vertical which I use because I live in an area with restrictions on antennas, so no huge beams for me any more since 2009. The miracle whip was purchased by me as an operational requirement for my 'Pedestrian Mobile' operation i.e. on the move whilst walking and also being discreet. I found it also was ideal for packing on holiday due to its telescopic nature and very quick to deploy even on the beach! I do also use even smaller HF aerials on my car, such as the Australian Outbacker Stealth plus at only 90cm long (3 feet) with sufficiently good enough results! Likewise my Yaesu ATAS 120 is not much longer and I work lots on that too. So come on guys I am not trying to encourage anyone to buy any particular antenna, I am just providing my findings and if you want the full detail please visit my website at http://www.qsl.net/g0isw http://www.qsl.net/g0isw where you can see lots more. [Elecraft] K3 and Audio
If there is anyone out there like me who has never brought the audio out of their K3s to an external system, here's a winner: Logitech Z623, currently on sale up here at Staples for $145. One stereo cable to the K3 SPRK OUT and another stereo cable to my laptop, and I suddenly have a perfectly matched audio system that allows me to mix audio from the radio with audio out from the laptop with numerous ways to balance audio channels and overall audio level. Impedance matches seem to be perfect. The Logitech hardware looks as is if it were designed to match typical ham radio gear with an attractive sort of militarized look. System control is via one of the two desktop speakers which has power on/off, bass adjustment, volume adjustment, and the inputs for the K3 audio and output to headphones. Audio out from the laptop is fed to the system via the larger bass speaker box. If all one wants is decent audio from their laptops (which is where I started), buy it for that reason alone. The new audio is like having been given a new K3 and is icing on the cake. The night I hooked this system up, I tripped over PS0T. Two seconds to set the K3 up for split and I worked them without cans. The Z623 is the biggest improvement in this station since I added the P3 and is so perfect as to seemingly have been designed for this purpose.. Contact me off-line if you want more details. Re: [Elecraft] Control of K3 from CW Skimmer in split mode
A year or two ago I obtained a K3 subrx definition file SKIMMER. Clicking calls on the bandmap or call list and sends VFO B there. It only works if you have a subrx and are tapping the subrx IF. (I think) I don't know what will happen if you are in split w/o a subrx using VFOA IF output. I can't claim understanding about the file nor guarantee it will work for you. I do thank whoever made it up initially. If you have SKIMMER set up to export spots, then clicking on the spot sends in your logging program sends VFO A to the station. Clicking on the bandmap or call list sends VFO B to the station. Works for me. [Elecraft] K3/KPA500/RCS-10 antenna switch
Getting this combo to work here was an interesting challenge. 1) The RCS-10 control box outputs a 3 bit binary signal to control 8 antennas 2) Several antennas that are multiband. 3) I have a remote A/B switch box with that is DC powered over the coax. 4) I wanted to also have the KPA-500 follow the K3 band switching. This could all be done in hardware but antenna changes would require rewiring. For me the solution was a PIC, four relays (+ drivers) added to the existing control box. Manual selection is retained. The PIC used is a PICAXE 18m2+ $5 chip. It's in-circuit programmable by a free software program. BASIC language can be used. Perhaps others. Its input is the K3 BCD data which it echos that to KPA-500. It then outputs the proper 3 bit binary code to the RCS-10. The A/B signal is turned on if the band is appropriate. Antenna/band combos are software programmable. The program and data occupies 270 bytes. It never ceases to amaze me what a little bit of smarts in a chip can do. 73 de Brian/K3KO - No virus found in this message. Re: [Elecraft] K3 VLF transverter?
That's quite an operation that MRHS runs, and it's all-volunteer. It's great to see the preservation effort, unlike VOA stations that are being left to whatever. If you ever get a chance to visit, MRHS holds operations most Saturdays, and a chance to visit Point Reyes National Seashore makes it even better. Licensed amateurs can operate K6KPH on 7.050 and 14.050 MHz as guests, and they recently got operations going on 17m. The crew there are most hospitable. We were there last summer, on July 12th, for the Night of Nights event. This is the date that commercial marine radio traffic ceased using CW. Richard Dillman and some of his crew were at Pacificon both last year and this year, with a remote operation that keyed the transmitters at Bolinas Bay from the hotel. He gave quite an interesting presentation last year, but for some reason was turned down this year. They are selling T-shirts through Zazzle to generate operating funds. Donations are also welcome, as they have a rhombic antenna that needs some work. 73 de Jim - AD6CW On 11/30/2012 12:53 PM, Mike Morrow wrote: KSM on 426Kc on Saturdays is usually around S8 during the day. The Palomar and Jackson Harbor products are both *receive converters*. They are not transverters (transceive converters) which is the topic of this thread. At this time I know of no transceive (transmit *and* receive) converter for the amateur LF/VLF allocations. Perhaps Elecraft will be offering an XL10 transverter (say 10 watt output with switchable output filters for 137 and 490 KHz) by the time the bands are open. Re: [Elecraft] K3 VLF transverter?
Narrowband weak signal digital modes that can get some gain from source/channel coding will probably dominate LF operation if we in the US ever get a general allocation. US utility companies run their PLC systems in that range and are, or at least act like they are, very worried about QRM. Since they are SCADA systems for control of the power grid, and the FCC is sensitive to it, so any allocation is likely to have a fairly stringent ERP limit, and signals will be weak for sure. I don't know how high an EFHW would have to be to be effective. With the exception of high power coastal stations [huge rhombics/curtains], most LF TX antennas are vertical-ish. I was kidding about the SSB. :-) I just noticed the BW was 2.1 KHz which was the BW of the Collins mech filter for SSB. I don't know what the market for a suitable transverter would be for Elecraft but my guess is ... not big. What comes out the 8.125 MHz BNC IF connector when you transmit? 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2013 Cal QSO Party 5-6 Oct 2013 - www.cqp.org On 11/30/2012 12:36 PM, KD7YZ Bob wrote: On Friday Jensen used a Straight-Key to send: -Original Comment--- band. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 amplified mobile speaker
Be VERY careful when you use the external speakers! I was using my KX3 with a small HOME brand speaker system for an iPod; I had the level adjusted to a moderate level, but had a noise burst. The system (radio/external speaker) was silenced. I unplugged the HOME speaker, and the audio was OK in the KX3. I disassembled the Home speaker, decided to get a new audio amp as a repair, as the unit was going to be too hard to justify the effort. I found a small amp on good old eBay, which I just received TODAY! My point is that this is a great idea, but just be aware of the possibility of overload. I have no idea if my issue is an isolated case, or not. 73; -Mike- KØJTA On 11/30/12 8:29 AM, JP O'Connor wrote: Hi Gary, The Chill Pill speakers are one handy choice for portable use with the KX3. They are very small and light, convenient to pack, self powered, and sound very good. Currently, they are shown at $33.50, so are not the cheapest, though they are very good quality. http://www.amazon.com/Chill-Mobile-Speakers-Players-Laptops/dp/B001K33QSO/ref=wl_it_dp_o_nS_nC?ie=UTF8colid=3SFWEMAP46M8Gcoliid=I1NAGQ9JJG3H6Y 73 JP WF4Z On Fri, Nov 30, 2012 at 4:51 AM, Gary Gregory vk1zzg...@gmail.com wrote: Does anyone use an external amplified speaker in a mobile installation with the KX3? __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
