[Elecraft] OT: kit building
If you are thinking of the DEM kits - I build them on order. 1296 transceiver is not available from DEM while they re-design it. http://www.kl7uw.com/kits.htm I have DEM transverters for 144, 222, 432, and 1296 in use with my K3/10. Re: [Elecraft] Future K-radio?
Gary, What you are envisioning is a perfect example of an idea that can become a new niche product. If Elecraft chooses to not develop the concept, there is no reason that it cannot be done by someone else. For example: fabricating a cage for docking several transverter boards. I'm pretty sure that one can arrange to purchase plain pcb's from some mfrs of transverters. But you would need sufficient capital and business plan to present an attractive business proposal to the mfr. I basically did this with DEM for their VHF/UHF transverter kits. They had no objection to my building kits and reselling them, as they got to sell the kit. I made sure not to be in competition with their sales of assembled units. Many small ham radio businesses have gotten a start with just such an idea. --- From: Gary K9GS garyk...@wi.rr.com To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Future K-radio? Re: [Elecraft] Keyer weighting
The K2 and K3 have near perfect equal key ON/OFF delays. Therefore, the K3 and K2 will not normally need external keyer delay compensation. The KX3 (measured with MCU 1.50 / DSP 1.21) has about 8 ms key ON to OFF delay. The delay is for both the internal and external keyers. (Breakin mode, XMIT not enabled) The KX3 weight control can be used to compensate for the internal keyer delay, though is speed dependent and runs out of compensation above about 25 WPM. At 20 WPM with the KX3 Weight set to 1.15, the resulting transmitter output weighting will be about 1:1. For the KX3 with an external keyer, set the delay to 8 ms. [Elecraft] DL1 - Measuring Coax Loss
How many of you have an Elecraft DL1? It's an amazing piece of test equipment for only $26 when coupled to an accurate DVM. The DL1 is a simple 50 ohm dummy load with a peak detector diode. The load on the diode is the input impedance of the voltmeter, normally 10 Meg Ohm, which results with a rather flat 0.25 Volt diode loss. One use is to measure coax loss along with the KX3. The KX3, having an active power control, has a very stable and repeatable power output. The Fluke 87V has four significant digits when measuring 10 watts. The KX3 output is repeatable, using the 87V AutoHOLD feature, within +-2 LSB digits (+-0.02V) resulting with a resolution of about 0.022 dB. Measuring coax requires two measurements, therefore, the coax loss computation is within about 0.044 dB. Some additional loss error may be caused by the DL1 50 ohm RF impedance. I suspect that the DL1 is well within 2% in the HF region, probably within 1%. As a test, I measured and plotted a 100 foot piece of RG-58A/U. And solved for K1, conductor loss, and K2, dielectric loss, constants. Hi Hisashi, From the photo is looks like you have your REF LVL set too high. The base signal (noise level) should be slightly below the dividing line between the upper display and the waterfall. Press the REF LVL button and turn the SELECT knob counterclockwise until the noise level just disappears. Re: [Elecraft] [P3 SVGA] Has anyone seen garbage in the waterfall display?
Hello Hisashi, It looks like you have a very high noise level, or, you never ran the level calibration for the P3. Other than a few blips on the right half of the screen, I don't see any signals, so I wouldn't expect to see much of anything in the waterfall either. That said, you can put the waterfall into a more usable range by simply adjusting the REF LVL (on front panel of P3) downward until the bottom edges of the noise spikes in your spectrum display baseline are just hitting the bottom of the diving line between the spectrum display and the waterfall display. That will produce the detail you're looking for in the waterfal display. 73, Dale WA8SRA I just got my P3 SVGA card and it's just showing video noise in the waterfall. Re: [Elecraft] What is this interference displayed in P3 ? It moves along with VFO
Two possible causes for spurious signals on the P3 are 1) A bad coax jumper with a non-continuous shield (Elecraft had some at some point) , and 2) paint on the inside of the enclosure where the parts are joined. Try a new jumper cable and make sure the mating surfaces of the enclosure are sanded clean. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 PSK help needed
Hi Julie, A lot of laptops these days are using those annoying combo jacks, which instead of having a tip, ring, and sleeve, have a tip two rings, and a sleeve, putting the mic-in and stereo headphone-out connections one a single jack. Splitters are available online, but I have not been successful in getting those splitters to work either; it seems like the on-board audio in many laptops senses whether one has plugged in a combo plug versus a headphone plug by looking for a specific impedance on the microphone side, and I haven't spent the time to figure out what impedance they expect me to present. I got sufficiently frustrated with it that I went down to my local computer retailer and purchased a USB headset adapter. It plugs into a USB port, and has two jacks-- one for headphones, one for a microphone. In reality it's just a very simple sound card with one input and one output. It works a treat though. Cost me all of $10, and it works with both my PC and my Macbook Pro like a charm. The one I have uses the C-Media chipset, and it looks a little bit like this one, though this isn't exactly it: http://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-virtual-External-Adapter-USB-AUDD/dp/B00D69U1B0/ With regard to your PTT problem, make sure you're using a program that will do PTT via CAT command. If it is trying to do PTT by raising CTS or RTS, you won't get anywhere. You may need to install FlRig and use HamRig if you're using FlDigi. Hope this helps, Nick On 24 August 2013 08:28, Julie Royster jsdroys...@bellsouth.net wrote: Hello all, I have studied the prior posts about KX3 and PSK31 but I am still not getting it. 1. Re: [Elecraft] DL1 - Measuring Coax Loss
Excellent post, John. You don't mention that there is even more useful information about this on your web site. I have always thought it would be very useful for Elecraft to post App Notes of this kind about all their mini-kits. I know several people who have built them seemingly to satisfy their kit addiction, but then toss them in a drawer and never use them. There is plenty of information around about how to use them, but I think it would be very helpful to see them used almost in a tutorial fashion as you have done here. Specific hook ups and tests on Elecraft gear with the noise generator, 2-tone generator, etc. Many of us have used equipment like this over decades, but Elecraft has introduced whole new generations to ham radio who could really benefit from knowing how to routinely use this test equipment, and enjoy a new aspect of the hobby at the same time. I think the work you show on your web site could be the first of these App Notes. Eric KE6US On 8/24/2013 5:28 AM, John Oppenheimer wrote: How many of you have an Elecraft DL1? Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 112, Issue 45
Julie, I am still a newbie too, it'll happen. I use an iMic on an Macbook Pro with Fldigi software. It is very easy to use. On Aug 24, 2013, at 6:00 AM, elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net wrote: 1. I do the Mic Btn OFF when the mic is still plugged in. I think if it is disconnected, the radio turns off that option. 2.Has anyone succeeded in using a LAPTOP with KX3 without an iMic or a signalink for PSK? A lot of the prior posts refer to desktops that have a line in connection (laptop does not) or to setups using iMic or Signalink. That's how I first tried, per the Fred Cady book. It SHOULD work but … I gave up in frustration. I can send you the pages from his book that describe that process but it sounds like you know what to do. The USB approach is easier and better, supposedly, for noise isolation. 3.Would Don Wilhelm's comments about attenuators being needed between computer soundcard and KX3 apply to laptops as well? How would I know? What could I measure? You got me on that one! 4.I had a waterfall the other day but could not get TX to light up on the KX3. I am using the cables sold by Elecraft. The Keyer/MIC level controls the TX on PSK ( I think). For reference, my phone (SSB) setting when using the mic is about 25. When doing PSK, I set the level to 4, quite a difference. You set the TX to VOX, right? Any and all advice is greatly appreciated! Good luck and you'll get it figured out with the elmers that are here, they are a great bunch. I was SO frustrated, especially being on a MAC, but got it sorted out. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 PSK help needed
Julie, First of all, I assume you are trying to use the KX3 with a soundcard application like FLDIGI with the KX3 in Data A mode??? Operating in the KX3 PSK mode (PSK-D) is a bit different, and only certain software packages support it. Re: The other day I succeeded in setting Mic Btn to OFF but today when I go to the menu the only choices for Mic Btn are PTT and NR... I assume you mean NA rather than NR. The menus are mode sensitive meaning if you are in a mode where that menu selection doesn't apply, it doesn't allow you to select it and usually says NA. I think mine gives me NA when I am in Data A mode. I am sure it does when in CW mode. Re: Has anyone succeeded in using a LAPTOP with KX3 without an iMic or a signalink for PSK? Yes. I use the internal soundcard on all my computers. IF you are trying to decode the IQ output at the same time, you will need a second soundcard, but don't worry about that yet. I go directly into the computer's mic input and take sound out of the phones output. Setting up the internal computer settings is the hard part. Every operating system is different. I normally use an i-Mic because it is inexpensive and works well, even on my Windows machines, and avoids transmitting system sounds. I do not see any need for Signalink, attenuators, etc. All of that just makes life more difficult. Re: Would Don Wilhelm's comments about attenuators being needed between computer soundcard and KX3 apply to laptops as well? How would I know? What could I measure? I have tried them, but find that they just confuse the issue. They create another variable that you have to deal with. I just use the Elecraft cables and connect directly. On RX, the soundcard volume (and the KX3's volume control) affect the waterfall intensity. If either of them are too low, you won't see anything on the waterfall...to high, and you will only see very bright colors. For Transmitt, the soundcard volume affects the ALC setting. You don't want to get into ALC since it is a non-linear process. See the KX3 manual and your software docs for setting soundcard volume (and ALC). Re: I had a waterfall the other day but could not get TX to light up... What software package are you using? The setup varies for different software packages. In addition, sometimes the soundcard gets put on mute. Other times, software (other than your ham radio software) will change the volume settings. You may need to go to the operating system's soundcard settings and adjust them every time you start up you ham radio software. That is why a lot of hams will use a dedicated computer(s) for their operations. Not much help here. Just trying to give you encouragement. Figure 1 on page 5 of the KAT500 owner's manual (I'm looking at revision C). If you have other things to connect to the AUX connector you may need a Y. For the basic K3, KAT500, and KPA500 you don't need any Ys, you just need two of the 15-pin accessory cables. 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Bill OMara Sent: Saturday, August 24, 2013 13:20 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Need K3,KPA550 KAT500 cabling diagram Can someone point me to the location or send me a cabling diagram for connection all three devices. [Elecraft] KAT500/Icom help
A friend runs an IC756 Pro III, and recently got a KAT500 tuner. He likes it, but when he presses the tune button on either the tuner or the radio, the tuning solution is not always a good one... when he then keys the radio, a better solution is sought. He believes the problem is that the Icom puts out only 10 watts when tuning, but the KAT500 wants higher power. Does this sound like an accurate diagnosis? Can someone suggest a solution? (I already suggested a K3). I asked if the Icom can be set for a higher output in the tune mode, and he was not certain, but thought not, since, when the cable to the tuner is unplugged from the back of the radio, the internal tuner would then see the higher power, and might not be happy with that. My friend is so busy at work that he has refrained from joining this group, fearing that he would not have time to read all the traffic, but I can either relay to him... or pass along his email, if one of you learned friends would like to work with him on this challenge. [Elecraft] Future R radio dreamin'
I've been watching this K radio wish list thread and I liked where it went. I too would like to see a new Elecraft KV3 as a technical update to the venerable Yaesu FT-736r. Some features of interest are: - Dual simultaneous receive; switchable among the VHF bands; 50 and 144 as a minimum. Selectable transmit on either single band. - Dual band stereo audio with each receiver in each ear. Also front panel selectable for both ears on one receiver or the other - Optional modular capability for 222, 432, 902/3 and 1296 Mhz bands - State of the art receive performance with respect to sensitivity without external (PR-6 type) pre-amplification. - K3 receive performance with respect to strong adjacent signal rejection. - Future 70 Mhz expansion capability - Architecture similar to K3/0 or KX3 type user interface with remote black box for RF power handling, switching, sequencing and cooling chores. Feedlines, external keying, external IF, freq reference would interface with the remote box, and some infrequently accessed user adjustments would reside there. User interfaces, mic, key/paddle, external PC would connect to the user interface box. - Seperate RF inputs/outputs for each band with user defined TR switching or seperate rcv and xmt paths - Compatible with P3 and /or other graphical displays - 100 watt power output on 6 and 2 meters, 25+ watt power output on 1.25 M and 70 cm bands; 10+ watts on 33 and 23 cm bands - Separately adjustable output power for each band with no key-up power spike. - High duty cycle transmit capability - Capability to discipline IF and LO frequencies with an internal or external precision 10 Mhz reference. - Available zero dBm (1 milliwatt) drive on 28 and 144 Mhz selectable per band for external transverters - Integrated KRC2 type band decoder - Integrated five event sequencer for each band with the KV3 keying selectable as any one of those five events. Menu selectable event delay and per band external electrical access on each sequenced event. - Variable VFO doppler correction rates for each receiver - Mode change from SSB to CW without VFO change Sweet dreams.. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 PSK help needed
Agreed, but I use my computers. They're business tools and not something that I dedicate solely to my hobby. I know that's a little different from most here. A relatively inexpensive USB soundcard is cheap insurance -- and an expensive soundcard is still cheaper than another laptop, and one is easier to carry than two. 73 -- Lynn On 8/24/2013 6:01 PM, Mike Harris wrote: Turn them off, that's what I have done. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 PSK help needed
Lynn, Not only keeping the system sounds from going out on the air, BUT --- If you are using a laptop, the internal sound card typically has only a Mic level input (no line-in). With a mic level input, the KX3 (or K3) will overdrive the mic input unless you provide an attenuator in the line. Similarly, the soundcard line out is too large a level for the mic input of the KX3, and you may need an attenuator - that depends on your computers line out and the amount of control you have for the output level. The 3rd reason is that many internal sound cards have a lousy noise floor. An external card will usually beat the internal soundcard when the noise floors are compared. That being said, internal soundcards have improved in the last few years, so give it a try (especially if you have a desktop) and see if the results are adequate for your needs - you can always add a USB soundcard later. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/24/2013 8:42 PM, Lynn W. Good Evening, During this week summer changed to fall. Nights were crisper and the smell of the forest has changed. Luckily it has been a fairly moist year with all of the fog. Very, very little rain but when the fog rolls in the trees rain on themselves. Fire danger has not gotten very high this summer; hopefully it will continue so until the rainy season begins. Propagation was decent to good this week on my skeds into Alaska. Some flutter but the sun has been shooting at us again. According to Space Weather another CME is due to hit. Aurora alerts for tonight so those of you closer to the magnetic pole may get a treat. I may have seen aurora here in Oregon but nothing like what I have seen in Wisconsin. Half the sky red with long streamers shooting from north to south horizons faster than I can write it. I once watched as the initial burst changed into a more stable display of drifting curtains.
