Re: [Elecraft] Sorta OT - assistive technology assistance

2019-01-10 Thread Richards
THANK YOU for the several replies to my mixer circuit question - both on
and off the list.  Unfortunately, few actually answered the original
question,  most often advising me to abandon the project or mix on a
computer sound card.

First - Thanks, Steve, for your input based on personal experience.
While I am familiar with your mixer, Tom prefers a device with stereo
channels and outputs for both headphones and powered speakers. The model
under consideration has only two control pots, making it easier to
manage.   Tom truly appreciates your personal input and direct
correspondence off list.   He puts a lot of stock in your take.

Second - Tom prefers a simple hardware solution.   Locating a manual
control next to the rig is much easier (for him) to manage, than mixing
with a computer sound card.   Navigating multiple operating system
windows is a serious challenge because he cannot see the monitor or use
a mouse.  This is not the preferred method for a contest or snagging
rare DX before a pileup ensues.  Mixing on a computer would be very
inconvenient;  close your eyes and try it some day!   It's easy for you
to say ... but, not so easy for my friend to do.

Third -  We can simply purchase a commercial product  (I recommend the
Rolls MINImix MS22s stereo mixer, with just two pots, and outputs for
both headphones and speakers)

UNFORTUNATELY, THAT DEFEATS THE WHOLE POINT BEHIND MY QUESTION.

While I do NOT wish to look a gift horse in the chops, or appear
ungrateful for the advice received so far;  money is not the object as I
want to LEARN how this type of circuit works, and do a favor for a
friend, in one stroke. Advising me to save money and just buy a
turn-key, off-the-shelf solution hardly fits the HAM RADIO TRADITION of
experimentation and self-determination,  and teaches me nothing about
circuit design.   I was hoping to build something MYSELF- earning that
heady sense of self-satisfaction that accompanies the completion of a
successful home brew project.  Considering all the experts on this list,
including world class board certified AES audio man Jim Brown, I figured
a simple summing circuit would be a snap.

I close this thread with a big THANK YOU on behalf of my  ... um ...
"client,"  whilst I repair to the proverbial drawing board to renew my
search for a simple summing circuit.

Happy trails to all.   JR

(We return you to your regular daily programming content)     ;-)

[Elecraft] New DSP features?

2019-01-10 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi all,

The K3/K3S and KX2/KX3 are SDRs, by definition, because they provide
demodulation and modulation features via a DSP chip that is programmable.

Our DSP algorithms already give the user all the usual features expected of an
all-mode transceiver, and then some:

  - DVR
  - variable passband filtering & IF shift
  - audio peaking filter (APF, for CW)
  - auto-spotting and automatic tuning (CW, PSK)
  - dual watch (KX2/KX3)
  - audio effects
  - DTMF (KX3)
  - dual-passband filtering for RTTY
  - FM subaudible tones
  - data decode/encode in various modes
  - noise reduction
  - RX and TX EQ
  - synchronous AM (K3/K3S)
  - ESSB
  - transmit noise gating
  - speech compression
  - manual notch filtering
  - autonotch

...etc.

That said, here's your chance to dream up *new* DSP features we haven't thought
of. All suggestions will be debated by our engineering team, even those that
appear radical or implausible at first glance.

We'll keep this to ourselves, so don't worry about being judged for tossing out
some wacky ideas. Let's cast a broad net.

Please send all correspondence on this topic directly to yours truly.

Wayne

I also added the KIO3B modification to my K3 (2197) in addition to the

difference is on the Keypad 6 which says DUAL PB on the K3 and APF on the
K3S that I can see.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT3A & KIO3B Upgrade for my K3

2019-01-10 Thread Don Wilhelm
There is no access to FSK-D using CAT commands other than those
supplying ASCII strings.

FSK-D can transmit using paddle (not straight key) input, ASCII text,
the FSK pin on the ACC connector (with a one transistor keying
interface) or from the Terminal screen of K3 Utility.

I do not know of any software applications that support other than
keying the FSK pin (except for K3 Utility).

If you can deal with soundcards, AFSK-A is usually a better choice for
RTTY. Many software applications support it.

If you want to use FSK-D, you will have to suffer with the extra cables,
and with the advent of the KIO3B interface, it is more difficult to use
the RTS or DTR RS-232 signals from the computer. You might be able to
pick those signal off the RS-232 dongle that comes with the KIO3B, and
run it through the One Transistor keying interface to activate the ACC
connector pin, but if you have the P3 connected with the K3S and using
the P3YCBL, getting access to that RS-232 signal becomes more difficult.
A standard RS-232 "Y" cable may make it possible.

Re: [Elecraft] ERR TXF

2019-01-10 Thread Bob McGraw K4TAX
Normal for most radios due to carrier frequency and receiver offset for CW.
Elecraft is not the only that does it this way.

As filters with reduced bandwidth we find that group delay increases. With this
CW wave shapes become a difficult task. Wider filters are much easier to
generate good quality CW elements.

Re: [Elecraft] ERR TXF

2019-01-10 Thread Don Wilhelm

John,

No mystery - the stock K3/K3S includes the 2.7kHz filter or the 2.8kHz
with the upgrade. So CW transmit has to work with that filter - the DSP
does the rest.

So if you select a CW width filter for CW transmit, you will get the ERR
TXF message.

For goodness sakes, give up on the CONFIG menu in the radio and use the
utility. It’s so much easier and you can see all the filters at once.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT3A & KIO3B Upgrade for my K3

2019-01-10 Thread Nr4c
None that I know of. FSK is not normally a CAT control nor is it done with
“handshake” signals on standard serial port. It is passed on the TX line of a
RS-232 serial connection to a discrete pin on a radio for FSK signaling. My K3
has such a pin on the Acc2 connector on the rear of the radio. My IC806MkIIg
also hat an FSK pin on the 13 pin DIN connector. Other rigs are similar.

AFSK today is not what it used to be. Manufacturers have developed better TX
and RX filters and I don’t really think you can tell the difference.

Re: [Elecraft] ERR TXF

2019-01-10 Thread Don Wilhelm

Mark,

Use K3 Utility, it is quick and easy. Only enable one filter for for
transmit on each mode. You can enable multiple filters for receive on
each mode.

K3 Utility makes it quick and easy - just check off the applicable boxes
and save to the K3/K3S.

Re: [Elecraft] ERR TXF

Mark,

It is easy to set up the filter enables for each mode - for both
transmit and receive using the K3 Utility Configure Filters selection.

Save the filter configuration to the K3 and operate.
Much easier than trying to set them for each mode in the menu.

2019-01-10 Thread Victor Rosenthal 4X6GP
This error is caused by selecting a filter other than the 2.8 or 2.7 kHz
filter as the transmit filter. Use CONFIG:FLTX to select that filter for
CW/DATA/SSB. (Except if you have FM (13 kHz) or AM filters (6 kHz) you
must select those filters in the FM and AM modes).

Re: [Elecraft] KX3, QRP, /P, 80m, daylight

2019-01-10 Thread Ken Roberson via Elecraft

Joe,

Testing propagation on 80M in the daytime is a good project.

Often I test propagation on 630M in the daytime with a shortvertical.

A “ T “ antenna would be good for your test, if you can get enoughtop loading
you

Would not need a base loading coil.

I ran 630M WSPR beacon last night , and was heard by manystations in EU.

Please, don’t tell me about the inefficiencies of short verticals on the low
bands, or the propagation issues on 80m during daylight. These I understand.
But I have a project in mind…..

My question is to ask if anyone on the list has ever tried this, and with what
results? If any!

Gene,

I also thought Tom N0SS originated that mod, but I did not find it on
his website (preserved by the Mid-Missouri Amateur Radio Club).

My computer has a  RS232 port and the female end of this cable will go

The male end shell will have to be notched since the socket at the rear
of the K2 has a bump/tab which prevents someone from plugging in a wrong
cable.  I am almost positive this mod was designed by N0SS but I can not
seem to find where I saw it.

Funny, I just realized I was misreading “OT” as Occupational Therapy. Our son
just finished OT grad school and is studying for the board. Of course,
assistive tech is a big part of occupational therapy.
