[Elecraft] SOLD - RE: FS: S-Box, Y-Box and MOXA 4 port serial over IP server

2020-10-20 Thread K5WA
All items found a new home amazingly quickly. I shouldn’t have stepped away
from the computer. 

By the way, typo on N6TV’s call below. Sorry to move you to Texas, Bob.
Typical of my contesting error rate unfortunately.

All the discussion of Y-Boxes and S-Boxes prompted this email as I’m still
clearing items surplus to my needs:

1. N6TV S-Box in pristine condition and acquired in 2018. Jumpered and
labeled for an ACOM 2000A and RemoteRig RC-1216H setup. $60
2. N6TV Y-Box in pristine condition and acquired in 2018. Jumpered and
labeled for K3/K3S ACC to AMP AUX. $60
3. MOXA NPort 6450 4 port serial server (over IP) in pristine condition.
This is really a neat piece of equipment if you need 4 serial ports in a remote
location. $100

I think the new price is $499. https://www.neteon.net/moxa-nport-6450

The S-Box and Y-Box can be bundled together for $100 if you want both. Bob,
N5TV, does a fantastic job of setting up the jumpers for you and labeling the
boxes if you need him to like I did. Jumpers can be set for your specific
needs.

Please contact me off list if interested.

Thanks for the bandwidth,

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 / K3 Mystery

2020-10-20 Thread Fred Jensen
I'll second Jack's observation Bruce.  "Most" of the time, the K3
switches power levels properly ... but, the key lies in Jack's
description of how it works.  The K3 gets notice of "events" from the
KPA which treats the notices as "fire and forget."  The event causes the
K3 to take some action(s) and go to some state.  It seems to be great at
that. It also needs to remember that state [conceptually, "KPA in
standby"] regardless of what goes on thereafter.  It seems there are
things you can do after putting the KPA in off or standby that foul up
this state memory.  With a background in aircraft systems for the
military, the peripheral fire and forget mode is a non-starter for me.
I just developed the habit of always checking the K3 PWR OUT setting
before transmitting.

to the K3 to decide what to do in response, if anything.
Thus when tapping a and button the KPA simply sends an event indicate that the

The fact that the K3 is indicating a response (in the VFO B display) says the

Since the K3 sets the correct power for the KPA OP mode, it should be expected
the the K3 is also selecting the high power setting when the KPA indicates that
it is in STBY mode. The is the same power level that would be used if the K3 is
powered up with the KPA left turned off. From personal experience I have many
times found the power not to be what I expected after some special operating
activity, like Field Day where we run just 5 watts. Turning the Power knob
usually fixes the problem quite nicely.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Transformer

2020-10-20 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
Gee Alan, we get told that all the time, specially by coworkers…

As for the transformer, the tech support guys give good advice here. Place the
rubber disks below the transformer in the appropriate places, and one above as
the instructions indicate.
Essentially you want to get the transformer off the base chassis enough to keep
it from vibrating against it. We all worry about tightening the nut down too
much, which is why we added the torque wrench suggestion in the manual. But it
does need to be rather tight to keep things from vibrating. Also, make sure all
the screws in the chassis are tight. The hum can come from other parts as well.
Making sure thins like the rectifier board are properly tight can help
alleviate this situation also.

Someone asked about keeping the rear-panel power on. I have the first KPA500
still in operation, and it has seen very little rear-panel off time during its
life. In this situation, the power supply is on, and the microcontroller is on
in sleep mode. This means the unit does draw current, but not very much. I have
seen no effect from it on my power bill. During months when I participate in
contests I can’t say that - running 500 or so watts for long periods each
weekend does spin the power meter a bit.

Thanks for the compliment, we work very hard to create, build and support
products that make you guys happy. I think it shows.

Re: [Elecraft] 2m internal transverter PTT out

2020-10-20 Thread w4sc
This is disappointing news. I just purchased a K3S-10 to use mainly as a uWave
IF.

I looked at the K144XV and KXV3B schematics. The fix will need to be
implemented on the KXV3B.

The K144XV uController monitors the 7R voltage from the baseboard, that is
routed through KXV3B, and when this voltage is 0, the 5R voltage is turned off,
and 5T ON, sending +5V out the BNC if it is strapped in. There is not a way
for the K144XV to determine the transition out of the RX to the TX state was
NOT intended for it. So the K144XV is being cycled RX/TX, enabled or not.

I have determined a fix that would require 1 trace cut, 2 diodes, and 2
resistors, and 4 connections on the KXV3B. It is rather simple in circuit
design concept, but may be physically difficult to implement. Possibly with
SMT components and a very small PCB. I do not know how much room is available,
or if the trace cut mentioned can be made.

Re: [Elecraft] extension of the length of the K3/KPA acc cable

2020-10-20 Thread Rick Bates, NK7I
In a post long ago, 2 meters was posted by Elecraft, as the max end-end
length of the ACC cabling (two sections of stock cable).  Cabling longer
than that /MAY /affect the signal timing, causing errors (their words).
I ran my temporary station that way (for a couple years) until I got the
new shack room built and had no issues with cabling.

The cost of the proper cable from Elecraft is reasonable or there are
other sources (at your own risk).  You bought a Ferrari of a radio, are
you going to cripple it with questionable tires?  Don't cheap out, do it
right.

I also agree, the N6TV boxes (and cables) simplify the wiring (not
neaten to any great extent but it helps, it's great but not miraculous
:-P) .  If you go that route, Bob will work with you for the proper
pieces based on your needs.  Neatness helps minimize noise and other
issues too.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Transformer

2020-10-20 Thread David Gilbert

Because everyone who now owns a KPA500 owned it years ago and was a list
member back then??

Besides, I've been a member of this list since at least 2008 and I can
recall many KPA500 owners still complaining about hum even after trying
to follow all of the advice given here.  It's still a valid topic and
not outside the list boundary rules.

And of course, every single post in this recent KPA500 hum thread has
been clearly identified in the headline and could be easily ignored or
deleted by anyone who was able to read it.  You could have done so
yourself in far less time than it took you to write your post.

Re: [Elecraft] 2m internal transverter PTT out

2020-10-20 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Set the "band Outputs" correctly (page 19 of the K3 Owners Manual) and
build a discrete logic (TTL/CMOS) band decoder to select PTT to the
2 meter or HF/6m amplifier.

Alternatively, get a band decoder that works on the frequency data
from CAT/RS232 (like microHAM Station Master) and allow it to select
PTT to the 2 meter on HF?6m amplifier based on the CAT data.

Dear Elecrafters,

I have a K3 with an internal 2m transverter that I use with an external
amp. Initially I had the amp connected to PTT-out but that would key the 2m
amp if I transmitted on any band. To help with this, I put the optional
jumper on P8 in the transverter so that it put out 5v on ant3 (2m out) while
transmitting. I then built a simple NPN grounded emitter circuit to key the
2m amp by grounding its PTT-in when 5v show up on output of the transverter.
Here is the shocker: 5v show up on 2m transverter out whenever I transmit
on ANY band. How disappointing. Am I missing something? Is there a simple
fix?

For a couple of years, I have had two 87As on my operating desk, each
driven by a K3, and I the only time I experienced any issues when
changing bands was when I screwed up and transmitted into the wrong
antenna. Both of those 87As have the auto-tuning feature, which was added
several years after the amp was introduced. Not all 87As have it, older
amps require the replacement of a PROM, and after the company has been
sold several times, it's no longer available.

The auto-tuning system must be trained, by band segment. It's covered in
the manual, which can be downloaded. That training can be tricky,
depending on what the previous owner might have done. And the feature
must be turned on, by simultaneously pushing two of the buttons. I found
that it works quite well when working into reasonably well matched
loads, but its tuning range is pretty limited, and falls apart as the
mismatch approaches 2:1. It's a Pi-L output network, not an antenna
tuner.

One of those 87As has been replaced by a KPA1500, and it DOES
occasionally go into Fault mode when changing bands, but it matches a
FAR greater range of loads. I didn't replace the 87A because I was
unhappy with it, but to get legal limit on 6M.

Re: [Elecraft] 2m internal transverter PTT out

2020-10-20 Thread Terry Price
Raj,

There are two ways to deal with this.

First you can use DIGOUT1 to key an external relay which controls where the
common PTT goes, either to an HF amp or a 2m amp. In the menu, set DIGOUT1
to on for 2m only. A small, low current 12v relay connected between 12VDC
and pin 11 on the 15pin HD connector on the back. Let the common of the
relay go to the PTT jack, NC to your HF amp and NO to your 2m amp.

Second is DIGOUT0 which when KIO3 is set to TRN or HF-TRN goes low when you
select a transverter band (anything about 6m). This could also key a small
12v relay to steer PTT the proper direction. As above.

Hope this helps.

I vaguely understand this...that is, I completely get your point, but not sure

nonetheless...I did get a copy of an email I originated in gmail, which seems
to imply that this is not a gmail issue. That is, why would gmail decide that

replied to a post from someone else about a different matter - got the bounce,

replied to my own message, in the once case where I received it from the list

Because this list is different, at least for me, when I reply, I usually don't
get elecraft as the addressee, I get others. Sometimes elecraft shows up in the
CC place. So my habit now is to "reply all" which captures all the addressees.
I then delete the individuals, unless I specifically want to sent there, and
replace all the addressees with one address, the elecraft mailman address. That
ensures that I am sending back to the list, which is what I want to do most of
the time. It seems to work.

As you can see from above, if I originate a message, I get it from the list
server, but if I reply, I don't. Does this have summat to do with the way email
headers are formed, and what mailman is using to determine the potential list
of addressees? So even though I replied, my email address is not attached to a
header that mailman uses to determine who gets the replies? If I originate,
there are no other email addresses in the headers, so I /have/ to show up in
the right header, but if I reply...?

Re: [Elecraft] 2m internal transverter PTT out

Nice solution.

Unfortunately for me, I am trying to operate remotely. I may just have to get
a web switch and turn the amp on and off. I am hoping that some one has a
better solution.

I have the same issue, but a less elegant solution. My 2 Meter amplifier
has a remote head that has the keying input located on the back of it. I
opened it up and wired a toggle switch in line with the circuit with an LED.
I labeled it STBY/OPR like on my Ameritron AL-1200. I just flip the 2 meter
amp "out" of the PTT circuit when I'm not using it.

Dear Elecrafters,

I have a K3 with an internal 2m transverter that I use with an external

amp if I transmitted on any band. To help with this, I put the optional

2m amp by grounding its PTT-in when 5v show up on output of the transverter.
Here is the shocker: 5v show up on 2m transverter out whenever I transmit
on ANY band. How disappointing. Am I missing something? Is there a simple

Re: [Elecraft] JIM's KPA 500 transformer [was: KPA500 Transformer]

Jim.

I don't see this as resurrecting an old thread. You've asked for help in
your particular circumstance, not to discuss the merits of a generic
transformer.

As you seem to have done almost everything sensible, if the correct
torque doesn't correct it, I think your only recourse is to get back on
to Elecraft and tell them you think the transformer's faulty.

In the meantime, I guess the only thing you can do is either not use it,
or wear headphones and try to ignore it.

The torque spec is called out in the manual.  Why not use a torque wrench?
Can we please not resurrect the KPA500 hum thread already beat to death
multiple times years ago?  Or does everyone need to chime in yet again?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Transformer

2020-10-20 Thread David Christ
Torque wrenches are used for two reasons:

1) to make sure things are tight enough

2) to make sure things are not tightened too much.

Stating the proper torque is good engineering practice. For common screws and
bolts one can find the suggested torque in reference books and online. For
special circumstances the manufacturer should publish the proper values.

Re: [Elecraft] k2 cw filter settings

2020-10-20 Thread Robert G Strickland via Elecraft

Carlos...

The numerical values associated with the K2 filter settings are
approximations, used mostly for reference when adjusting the filters.
They do not indicate the "exact" filter bandwidths, etc.

Aligning the K2 filters is best accomplished following the instructions
on Don Wihelm's site, http://www.w3fpr.com/. Look at the bottom of the
main page for "K2 Filter Alignment." Don is an expert authority on the
K2, and his instructions are just about the standard for aligning the
filters.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S - Alpha 87a combo - loss of keying amp

2020-10-20 Thread E.H. Russell
Kimo,

In order to keep my 87a from tripping into fault on band change, I sometimes
need to lower the drive power. About 10w seems ideal.

On my 6700 and 890s I am able to configure a low drive power for the TUNE
function. I'm not sure but think the K3 has a similar function. Of course
make sure the antenna is matched before TUNE is activated.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3S - Alpha 87a combo - loss of keying amp

In a K3S tested with two Alpha 87a amps using RF sensing to change band and
tuning the K3S appears to easily trip the amp into Fault mode. When amp is
cycled between Operate and Standby to clear the Fault, K3s can no longer key
the amp unless you cycle power to the radio. Then it works properly again.

1. Manually change bands on the radio, with amp still sitting on prior band
and with the drive turned down to 5 to 8 W to try to ensure we won't trip
the amp while possibly transmitting into a momentarily high SWR of the wrong
band input circuitry? When keyed on the new band to have the amp auto-tune
it trips into Fault.
2. After cycling the amp from Standby back to Operate the K3S can no longer
key the amp. It is transmitting in apparent bypass mode as indicated by the
low RF level still indicating on the built in Watt meter of the amp.
3. This was tested with two 87a amps. Same issue.
4. Pulling the key line and shorting RCA plug at radio end does successfully
key the amp.
5. Another K3 radio with updated syn) doesn't do this.
6. I believe the pertinent default settings of the two radios were set to be
the same, though perhaps the band by band default drive setting or limit may
not have been mapped (If I understand correctly).

I am the new owner of the K3S and I have zero experience with the radio or
type. I've not set up my station yet (working on rebuilding tower and
antennas) since buying the radio. It is about 3 years old but only used for
6 months by the prior owner and once by my group at last year's Field Day.
The radio and P3 are being loaned to a friend to use in an SO2R entry in a
contest.

Has anyone experienced this? Any ideas on what may be wrong?
Can my K3S be sending a spike of power, anyway, to cause the trip? We
haven't gotten further into verifying this or other things as we only
started this today.Thank you for any help you may provide.

[Elecraft] 2m internal transverter PTT out

2020-10-20 Thread Rajiv Dewan via Elecraft
Dear Elecrafters,

I have a K3 with an internal 2m transverter that I use with an external amp.
Initially I had the amp connected to PTT-out but that would key the 2m amp if
I transmitted on any band. To help with this, I put the optional jumper on P8
in the transverter so that it put out 5v on ant3 (2m out) while transmitting.
I then built a simple NPN grounded emitter circuit to key the 2m amp by
grounding its PTT-in when 5v show up on output of the transverter. Here is the
shocker: 5v show up on 2m transverter out whenever I transmit on ANY band.
How disappointing. Am I missing something? Is there a simple fix?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Main Power - ON 24/7/365?

2020-10-20 Thread KE8G
Hi Jack,
I've had both my KAT500 and KPA500 powered on 24/7 for the last several
years, as I operate them remotely from my second home in Texas. The
KPA500's AC power is connected through a dedicated line, surge protector
and battery backup. The KAT500, which is DC powered, is connected to an
Astron RS-35M, which is on a dedicated line, surge protector and battery
backup.

As Tony, N2TK, stated, they need to be powered on if wanting to run
remotely.

I have been looking into remote switches. While I have not settled on anything,
I am looking at remote controlled high power handling relays. Not saying that
they are needed in this situation, but they are an option. Then you could leave
the power switches on, close the relay, and use remote software to turn them
on. If you are remote already, you prolly have the capability.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Main Power - ON 24/7/365?

2020-10-20 Thread N2TK via Elecraft
Hi John,
Both my KPA500 and KPA1500 are on a shelf in the basement, literally right
under my feet. The last time I shut them off was when I went to KP2M last
February.
If the power switch isn't on I can't tun them on from Elecraft's remote
software.

Is there any harm in leaving the KPA500 rear MAIN Power Switch ‘ON', 24/7/365?
(not the front panel power button).

I have done that with my KPA500 at the home station with no problem, but
wondered about doing it at the remote site? I can operate the front panel “ON”
button and “OPER/STBY” switch remotely so the amp is not running full-time,
just the internal power supply.

[Elecraft] K3S - Alpha 87a combo - loss of keying amp

2020-10-20 Thread Kimo Chun
In a K3S tested with two Alpha 87a amps using RF sensing to change band and
tuning the K3S appears to easily trip the amp into Fault mode. When amp is
cycled between Operate and Standby to clear the Fault, K3s can no longer
key the amp unless you cycle power to the radio. Then it works properly
again.

1. Manually change bands on the radio, with amp still sitting on prior band
and with the drive turned down to 5 to 8 W to try to ensure we won't trip
the amp while possibly transmitting into a momentarily high SWR of the
wrong band input circuitry? When keyed on the new band to have the amp
auto-tune it trips into Fault.
2. After cycling the amp from Standby back to Operate the K3S can no longer
key the amp. It is transmitting in apparent bypass mode as indicated by the
low RF level still indicating on the built in Watt meter of the amp.
3. This was tested with two 87a amps. Same issue.
4. Pulling the key line and shorting RCA plug at radio end does
successfully key the amp.
5. Another K3 radio with updated syn) doesn't do this.
6. I believe the pertinent default settings of the two radios were set to
be the same, though perhaps the band by band default drive setting or limit
may not have been mapped (If I understand correctly).

I am the new owner of the K3S and I have zero experience with the radio or
type. I've not set up my station yet (working on rebuilding tower and
antennas) since buying the radio. It is about 3 years old but only used
for 6 months by the prior owner and once by my group at last year's Field
Day. The radio and P3 are being loaned to a friend to use in an SO2R entry
in a contest.

Has anyone experienced this? Any ideas on what may be wrong?
Can my K3S be sending a spike of power, anyway, to cause the trip? We
haven't gotten further into verifying this or other things as we only
started this today.Thank you for any help you may provide.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Transformer

Then perhaps someone needs to educate Elecraft not to specify use of a
torque wrench, in their assembly instructions. ;-)

Toroidal transformers cause very little acoustic hum, unless the core
is not tightly wound or the copper wire windings are loose!

If you have to tighten the mounting bolt with a torque wrench
to get the transformer quiet, something is wrong!

Ray,

I don't know about any software, but the latest firmware is available - the
most recent is MCU 2.04, IOC 1.09 They must go together - order as FWK2MCIO.
If you have trouble finding it on the website, just email sa...@elecraft.com to
order.

To find your currently installed K2 firmware level, hold any button while
powering the K2 on, the firmware level will be briefly displayed.
