[Elecraft] Parts availability

2024-04-13 Thread Chris
Hello,

I am looking for E620021 and E620044 parts to make voltage and frequency
probes. Does anyone know where I can buy them from a third-party
supplier? Are they available from Elecraft?

Many thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] Origin of Signal-Fine Structures in SSB Pass Band Waterfall, mainly 80/40m

2024-01-06 Thread Chris
to
be off for a minute or two to allow the pressurized system to relax
before power is again applied. Also note that some digital devices like
internet routers may take 2 minutes or so to become fully operational
after power is again applied.

RFI is a difficult problem to diagnose, and it seems to me that it is
receiving very little attention from regulators. Cheap appliances are
popular and convenient but some may have bad effects on our spectrum.
Cutting corners in design affects spectrum users, and having dozens of
devices in every home adds up...

I have a general question to better understand analysis of SSB ( RX Pass
Band) signals displayed as waterfall, mainly on RX of night time/evening low
bands (80m/40m) propagation.

(Sorry up to now no waterfall screenshots available yet. Anomality is only
sometimes occurring, but not very short lived.

Waterfall:

The horizontal axis is frequency , the vertical axis is time and the
brightness corresponds to signal amplitude received via any propagation mode
(Skywave/NVIS/Groundwave, or mixtures)

Modulation/ splatter become visible.

The propagation effect I try to understand does not always occur.

It is a "specially (modulated) signal pattern" , a vertical waterfall signal
fine structure with periodic signal amplitude (brightness) minima and maxima
lines.

These lines are sometimes in SSB just straight down vertically with ca. 300
to ca. 400 Hz intervals (6 periods) .

Digital signals seem to have more lines in RX Pass Band on the waterfall.

Sometimes in the RX Pass Band these minima/maxima (QSB) lines are shifted
right ( QRG >)

Or at later observation times also may be left shifted (QRG<).

I can rule out EMI of broad/narrow band nature. It must be due to
propagation of the very observed signal

Sometimes signature appears as " distributed cloud islands" in the vertical
SSB PB waterfall band

I observe for TX SSB Mode (e.g., 2.7kHz BW) in the RX waterfall display :

1. About 6 Periodic, straight vertical lines (periodic signal amplitude
minima, which are darker), --normal propagation

2. About 6 Periodic, right shifted ( staring low f to higher f)
vertical lines (signal amplitude minima) , --special propagation mode?

3. About 6 Periodic right shifted ( staring high f to lower f) vertical
lines (signal amplitude minima) , -- special propagation mode?

4. The angle to the vertical axis seems to change often over time.
Probably according to HF Condx/Propagation?

5. It seems to be independent of TX LSB or USB mode.
6. Digital signals have often more vertical lines
7. The angle to the vertical axis seems to change often over time,
according to HF Condx/Propagation.

8. I have observed this effect also on day on 80m night time on a KIWI
SDR only 12km away in hilly HB9 ( combination of NVIS/ groundwave?)

Questions:

1. Is this an indication of Multi-Path Reception? May be with different
propagation modes at that time over certain distances possible?
2. Is this therefore, e.g., based on delay times (phase/arrival time
differences) of reflections from different ionospheric layers ( e.g. f1, f2
etc.) ?
3. Is this based on quasi simultaneous occurrences of skywave, NVIS and
may be even groundwave mode ?

Any comments or reporting of similar observations are greatly appreciated.

PS:

I observed this " shift effect" also sometimes for OTH-Radar (real or faked,
yes some are faked, see my qrz.com under DQRM) signals recently on 40m, in
EU late afternoon , night time here.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 2M transverter

2023-12-28 Thread Chris Cox, N0UK
Yes, Steve, all modes supported by the KX3 are usable on all bands, including
those using either internal or external transverters.

I am using my KX3 now primarily as the I/f for my 10GHz rig and have used it on
multiple modes including CW, SSB, FM, AM, and digital.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 question

2023-12-04 Thread Chris

Thanks, Walter K6WRU:

That was indeed the document I was mis-remembering as one page...

But it describes how to get INTO the CW announce mode, but does not tell
how to EXIT the mode.

I think I did a device reset to go back to turn CW announce OFF.

I also note that I appear to need a newer version of the manual that
came with the radio. I downloaded the e-version, but my computer does
not fit in my day-pack!

[Elecraft] QST - My new book about CW and Morse Code

2023-03-21 Thread Chris R. NW6V
Greetings.

I'd a daily reader and occasional poster to the group - K#, KX3, KAT500,
and KPA500.

Forgive the commercial interruption, but I wanted to share that my book,
The CW Way of Life, is now available on Amazon. https://amzn.to/3ltqzBo

I announced it a couple of weeks back on the LICW and SKCC group site, and
the feedback from readers has been almost embarrassing. One fellow called
it a "modern-day seminal work on CW." Several said they wish they had it
when starting out. ALL have called it a good read.

Enjoy!

Re: [Elecraft] My K2 lost audio

2022-08-05 Thread Chris
After following Don's suggestions, the issue was found to be from the
failed KDSP2 module. I have replaced the KDSP2 with my extra KAF2 module
and got the audio back. Now, I have to troubleshoot the KDSP2 module. As
I am getting the audio on and off intermittently with the KDSP2, I will
check if there is any solder joint.

Many thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] My K2 lost audio

2022-07-29 Thread Chris
A quick update on this. George, W1JHR, suggested checking the faulty
headphone jack. It could be an easy fix, but my case is different because
I don't get audio on the headphone jack either. The issue seems to be
somewhere on the AF circuit.

I get the audio back if I leave the radio turned off long enough, but it
disappears about 10 minutes after powering on, so something must trigger
the loss of receive audio. Any suggestions will be helpful.

Many thanks,

Chris KM1B

[Elecraft] My K2 lost audio

2022-07-26 Thread Chris
Hello,

I have two K2/100, and one of them developed an issue last night. It
suddenly lost audio. The S-meter is working, and it transmits fine but no
receive audio. When I leave it long enough, the audio comes back
occasionally, then goes off. I get the same results from the headphones,
so the issue must be in the AF section. Any suggestions?

Many thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] Oh Crap

2022-07-20 Thread Chris Waldrup
I helped a neighbor remove a broken headphone connector from her daughter's
iMac laptop.
I used a pin vise and a tiny drill bit like I use for drilling holes in PC
board. I drilled by hand into the broken connector barrel using the pin vise
and slowly worked the broken plug body out.

[Elecraft] K3 audio problem

2022-07-10 Thread Chris Meagher
Hi I have a strange problem with my K3/100.
The audio through the internal speaker is low, but comes up
much stronger with any slight movement of the volume knob.
Then it goes back down again, often accompanied by a brief
HI-CUR warning.
Also when AGC is turned off, audio is almost zero.

But, with the SP3 external speaker plugged in, the problem goes away!
Any insights much appreciated.

[Elecraft] Support email

2022-05-13 Thread Chris Cox, N0UK
I have emailed Elecraft Support twice this week but have received no reply or
acknowledgement.

Anyone know if they’re working this week? I was trying to validate that an RSA
# that was issued mid-last year is still valid now that there is some
reasonable ETA on the K3 option orders. I was hoping to combine the minor
radio repair with installation and checkout of the two items that I had ordered.

[Elecraft] K1 accessories

2022-05-01 Thread Chris Chapman
Hello all,

I've been able to buy a K1 here in VK. It is in excellent condition (Ser. No
3380) and has 20 & 40m only.

I know Elecraft stopped supporting some time ago and accessories etc are pretty
much discontinued. I'm interested in getting 15 & 17m band modules - can
anyone offer any thoughts on where I might ask around - or advertise a
"wanted" Other than eHam.net.

Thanks in advance,

[Elecraft] K2 SN 25xx has very low sensitivity in 20 and 80m bands

2022-04-24 Thread Chris
Hello,

My K2 developed a very weird issue. The sensitivity is very low in 20 and
80m bands. It receives but the S-meter reading is much low compared to
other receivers that I compared. For example, an S9 signal on another good
receiver is barely S1 on K2. Other bands are fine.

Any advice on where to check first? Thank you.

Re: [Elecraft] Shipping via UPS - A Lesson Learned the Hard Way

2022-04-11 Thread Chris
I never pay the UPS store for shipping. Instead, I create my shipment from
UPS website, then ask them for pick up or bring it to ‘The UPS Store.’

Insurance is not the only thing they charge extra. Their boxes are
outrageously expensive. If you need boxes for shipping, you’d better get
some from U-Haul.

Re: [Elecraft] KXPD2 paddle not working

2022-03-08 Thread Chris
Hi Gary,

You can disconnect the paddle and do a continuity check with your
multimeter. It seems that the problem is on the paddle. You can easily
disassemble it to see where the problem is. I did clean mine, and it is
fairly easy.

Hi Jim,

Excellent article. I haven't checked if it is a source of noise, but it
doesn't quite matter because this is a charger, not a power supply. I only
use it when I need to charge a battery, so it is OK.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Cheap power supply for KBT2

Hi Doug,

I use this, and it seems to be working very well. When you order, make
sure you specify a 14.8V (or 14.6V) model.

Some reviews complain that the voltage measurement is only 12V, but mine
clearly shows 14.8V on my Fluke meter.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 FW - N0UK tx inhibit & CW sidetone bug reproduced

2021-09-05 Thread Chris Cox, N0UK
Still hoping for some resolution to this problem since it’s now been a year
since it was reported to and acknowledged by Elecraft as being a firmware bug.

It really renders the KX3 as fairly useless as an I/F rig for microwave
transverters if you need the TxInhibit function.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S connections for Winlink Express -

2021-06-09 Thread Chris Kimball

1. The single USB cable is all that's needed.

2. The USB setting was already set to RS232, all that's needed.

In using the Elecraft Utility to check the connection, the rate for the
connection was 38,400 b/s. I had entered only 9,600 b/s into Winlink
Express.

The Elecraft K3S operation manual explains how to check which port on the
computer that the K3S appears on. (Windows: Device manager/ Ports:
plug/unplug the device) The K3S was on COM4. (Although no other devices were
attached, COM3, was taken by something. Beware.)

Actions: In Winlink Express / ARDOP Connection settings/ Radio: Set both
ports to COM4 and the rate to 38,400 b/s. Neat!

[Elecraft] K3S connections for Winlink Express -

2021-06-09 Thread Chris Kimball
I'm running Winlink Express 1.5.37.0 with my K3S, using the same K3S USB
connector to computer cable that serves well for FLDigi.

All is working well if the frequencies and bandwidths are set manually,
however, I'm not getting K3S frequency setting by Winlink Express when
channel setting on Winlink. All the work has been with ARDOP Winlink
sessions.

Do I need a cable from the RS 232 port to the computer USB port?

Do I need a K3S special setting?

Thanks,

Chris

Re: [Elecraft] What kind of hook-up wire does Elecraft use?

2021-05-02 Thread Chris Waldrup
Hi,

I use the M22759 series for everything I build both at my home shop and lab at
work, a large defense related company.
It's inexpensive and Teflon insulation.
I bought 2000 ft of #18 last week for work and it's right at 12 cents a foot.
It doesn't melt when you solder to it and is easy to work with.
The 22 AWG I normally buy is 3 cents a foot.
We buy from Wiremasters south of Nashville in Columbia TN.
$50 minimum order but no minimum on wire lengths. So you could buy as many feet
of each gauge and color as you would like.
Normally for home use I buy a thousand feet of a size/color at a time.
When I started my work was buying the wire from Digi-Key and it was $60 for 100
ft spool. They no longer do and didn't know about other supplier.
I can connect anyone interested with the rep there I use.

Exactly right.

I have screaming-loud tinnitus at 1700hz - which is louder than
conversation, and rises and falls in pitch and volume with every
heartbeat... Fun, fun.

Changing sidetone from 800 to 400 made a HUGE difference in my ability to
copy through the chaos. I did so after reading an article 2 or 3 years ago
- perhaps those referenced, but I thought it was done by the USAF for
intercept operators in the late 60's - I may be mistaken.

ut for those who might not get the implications of what Jim said: our
perceptions depend less on absolute values than on the difference between
two values. That's why when you get "hot" with a fever, you "feel cold"
(and want heat, blankets, etc.): the outside air is now "colder" with
respect to your skin temp.

In terms of Morse, if the signal you're listening to is at 800 Hz, and the
interfering signal (or even the tone of the white noise) is at 700 Hz, the
100hz difference amounts to just 12%. However, if the desired signal is at
400 Hz, and the interfering signal at 300, that 100hz difference is now
25%. At 300/200, it's 50%. Bigger differences are easier to copy.

I did have to reprogram myself to listen at the lower frequency -
familiarity had bred contentment.

Re: [Elecraft] 6.3mm to 3.5mm adapter broke off inside the K3 paddle jack

2021-03-01 Thread Chris Cox, N0UK
Quick update on my broken plug problem.

The suggestion to use a tap to remove the broken plug tip helped a little. It
removed the plug ring and ring insulator, however, the tip of the plug is still
trapped inside the 1/4” (6.3mm) socket. What’s more, now the ring contact of
the socket has sprung back open by a millimetre or two and is now very
effectively blocking the further extraction of the broken tip.

Word of caution: don’t buy 6.3 to 3.5mm adapters from Amazon!

So even if I can find a tool to engage with the tip, I think it rather unlikely
that I will also be able to get a second tool into the opening to then depress
the ring contact out of the way.

Probably the easiest (note - didn’t say EASY!) option now is going to be to
replace the actual paddle socket on the K3 RF board.

In the meantime, at least the standard key jack is still functional and so I
can use an external keyer or straight key to send code.

Oh, what a palaver!

Re: [Elecraft] Mag Loop from MFJ

2021-01-19 Thread Chris Cox, N0UK
FWIW - I invested in an MFJ-1786 when we moved into our apartment 6 1/2 years
ago. Since then, kit has been out on our 5th floor balcony in central
Minneapolis year round, easily standing up to both Minnesotan Winters and
Summers with aplomb.

It has not ceased to work in that time and has netted me ~150 DXCC’s on all
bands from 30 through 10 metres. Most of my work is CW by preference although
I did break a pile-up a couple of years back to work VP8 on 20m SSB from an
ATNO.

To say I am pleased with its performance and capability may be understatement
of the decade! I am absolutely gobsmacked at how well such a physically small
antenna plays on HF and am willing to stand up for MFJ (at least in this
particular case).

YMMV, of course…

I recently acquired a new shack laptop, Win 10 Home,
connected elecraft USB-RS232 cable to update firmware with the latest

But unsuccessful, got the message -

So I ended up doing it no problems with an older Win 7 laptop.
Does anyone have any experience with this or a solution?

[Elecraft] K3 transverter connector question

2020-11-12 Thread Chris Cox

Good day.

I am considering recrystalling my 2m transverter with a 118MHz rock
replacing the existing 116MHz crystal, thereby permitting full two metre
band coverage with a 26-30MHz I/F.

Does the K3 need to be widebanded to enable low-level 26-28MHz RF on the
transverter transmit port or is the low-level output available by default?

Re: [Elecraft] K4 vs. K4D Question

2020-10-06 Thread Chris R. NW6V
Terry,

I could use your self-description by adding "used to" in the context of
contests (I'm up to 297 confirmed and contest opportunities for the rest
are slim to none).

Then I'd add: "lives on tiny urban/city lot surrounded by both horrible QRM
and hills."

My antennas were as you describe: a 2-el 5-band beam up a whopping 30 feet,
and a wire running through and around trees like a demented pretzel at that
same height. And you're right, while diversity thrives on differences, it
doesn't thrive on THOSE differences.

In my quest for DXCC on 40 and 80, I'd added a pair of DXE active receive
verticals and noise canceller in a failed attempt to phase my way through
the s5-s6 noise wall - there were far too many noise sources for
cancellation to be effective. So I was left with a receive antenna that
didn't work all that well in noise-hell, either.

Then, after letting it sit mostly unused for 6 months, I tried diversity
reception.

Wow.

When you're working down near the noise, QSB can kill many a QSO. But even
with my minimal antennas, the way signals "float" as the RF rotates through
polarizations is remarkable to hear: a signal that would otherwise be lost
often comes up in one ear just as it drops in the other... I recently
worked VK6LW when he was unreadable on either the long-wire or the receive
ant, but was readable with diversity turned on.

It sometimes seems like the difference between mono and stereo music.

Anyway, diversity reception was unquestionably the key to 80M DXCC from
this QTH.

Point is: if my K3 hadn't already had that second receiver, it's unlikely I
would have added one just to try. So if you can swing the cash - like a
good scout: "be prepared."

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Pricing Posted

2020-10-04 Thread Chris Codella, W2PA
Another way of looking at this is through the lens of history and
inflation. In 1969 a set of Drake twins (R-4B, T-4XB, MS-4, AC-4) cost
$1149.85 (in the 1969 Lafayette Radio catalog). That translates to
$8136.60 in 2020. I daresay that the K4's features and performance are
just a tad bit better. ;-)

[Elecraft] KX3 Tx Inhibit CW-VOX problem

2020-09-15 Thread Chris Cox, N0UK
Having solved the need for getting +Ve Tx Inhibit working on my KX3/10GHz
Transverter integration using a MOSFET switch to invert the logic level coming
from the 10GHz transverter and configured the KX3 for 0v Tx Inhibit, I had the
opportunity to test it out yesterday afternoon.

The solution seemed to work fine on SSB but I now have a weird issue when using
the rig on CW.

If I manually select transmit with the microphone PTT (didn’t try the XMIT key)
and then wait for the transverter sequencing to remove Tx Inhibit and then key
CW with the paddles, the system works as desired.

If I key the system using CW VOX, the Tx Inhibit functions correctly, fully
disabling the transmitter from producing RF until TxInhibit is removed by the
transverter’s sequencing logic BUT then the CW sidetone becomes permanently on
from the moment TXInh disappears, regardless of whether I am keying or not. It
stays present until I press any of the buttons on the KX3. This happens
regardless of which band is enabled, but occurs whenever TxInhibit is initially
present.

If I remove the TXInh fro the ACC2 GPIO input (but leave the option enabled in
the KX3 config) the rig operates normally under VOX control.

Can anyone else replicate this oddball behavior? It seems to be a firmware
bug. I have tried removing power from the KX3 but that does not correct the
anomalous behavior.

Again, all works just fine if I don’t try to key the paddles before PTT
sequencing has changed over.

[Elecraft] Continuing saga with Tx Inhibit and the KX3 - possible firmware bug?

2020-09-14 Thread Chris Cox, N0UK
Having solved the need for getting +Ve Tx Inhibit working on my KX3/10GHz
Transverter integration using a mosfet switch to invert the signal and
configured the KX3 for 0v Tx Inhibit, I had opportunity to test it out this
afternoon.

The solution seemed to work fine on SSB but I now have a weird issue when using
the rig on CW.

If I manually select transmit with the microphone PTT and then wait for the

If I key the system using VOX, the Tx Inhibit functions correctly, fully
disabling the transmitter from producing RF until TxInhibit is removed BUT the
CW sidetone becomes permanently on from the moment TXInh disappears regardless
of whether I am sending or not. It stays present until I press any of the
buttons on the KX3. This happens regardless of which band is enabled, but
occurs whenever TxInhibit is present.

If I remove the TXInh fro the GPIO input (but leave the option enabled in the
KX3 config) the rig operates normally.

Can anyone else replicate this oddball behavior? It seems to be a firmware
bug. I have tried removing power but that does not alter the effect.

Again, all works just fine if I don’t try to key the paddles before PTT

I’ve thought the problem through further and have decided to use a simple
mosfet switch in the connector shell to invert the TXInh logic sense and
configure the KX3 for -TXInh instead of +TXInh.

Hard switching the GPIO pin showed that to be a usable workaround.

[Elecraft] KX3 ACC2 GPIO

2020-08-31 Thread Chris Cox, N0UK
I wish to interface my KX3 to my portable 10GHz transporter system. I have the
transporter’s PTT sequencer configured to output a +ve TX Inhibit signal which
I have been using to prevent my current I/F rig from transmitting until all
relays have changed over to transmit. The current rig is a Yaesu FT-817.

I want to be able to simply switchover the PTT/TXInh cable between the two
rigs, so that I can continue using the ‘817 as a backup in the event of some
problem with the KX3, and so was intending to us the KX3’s ACC2 GPIO TX Inh +ve
input just as I do the 817.

However, it seems that the KX3 actually has some bias applied that requires to
be pulled low to enable the transmitter, rather than looking for removal of the
+ve signal. This will mean that I need more than to simple switch over the
physical connectors on the umbilical cable. Although not insurmountable, it’s
not exactly ideal.

Anyone else done this or similar and, if so, what was your solution?

[Elecraft] Wanted to buy, an Alexmic

2020-08-12 Thread Chris Bull
Well after searching the world for a Alexmic to buy, new or used. I have
realized this list is my last hope. Alex has told me he doesn't expect to
get anymore and all online NA stores have no stock except RadioHaus.com
which is not replying to my inquiries, but lists them as for sale. Also
There is also a German online store selling these but the price in EU
currency for the item, shipping and exchange is, well... ridiculous.
So anyone in North America who would like to sell theirs I would accept.
It would need to be shipped to Canada and I will pay a US seller in USD via
paypal or whatever and pay for shipping of course.

[Elecraft] KX2 to Tentec 418 amplifier

I recently acquired a KX2 and love it. I also have a Tentec 418 100W

if there is an easy way for band-changing. I appreciate it if you share

"Once you turn it OFF with the front panel switch, it needs to be turned on
the same way. After that, yes the utility is fully functional."

I suspect the serial connection is getting confused and not properly
reconnecting in the power up/down situation. I see that between the K3 and
the Win4K3 suite frequently. If I power down the K3 I usually need to
restart the computer to get all the serial connections talking again.

This could well be an artifact of the specific serial connectors used.
PRoblems with one band of chip versus another are a constant source of
conversation.

As per the engineers and the experience of others, the behavior you're
seeing is not part of the design per se.

Re: [Elecraft] "2" or "3" Paddle

2020-05-06 Thread Chris R. NW6V
Hiya Tommy.

I own both the KXPD2 and KXPD3 and strongly prefer the KXPD2.

The KXPD3 was bought at the same time as my KX3 and served well for several
years. However I never "liked" it - found it clunky to send on and the
sharp edge of the paddles bit into my fingers, so I was on the lookout...

Then I tried the KPXPD2 at SeaPAC - and bought one on the spot. I have
never used the KXPD3 again.

As a point of reference, here in the home shack my preferred sending
implements are not paddles at all, but Vibroplex Lightning Bugs - of which
four sit on my desk as I type this...

As always, YMMV :-)

[Elecraft] K3 High SWR

2020-04-13 Thread Chris Pinholster via Elecraft
I recently moved and set up the same temporary Butternut vertical as I used in
my previous restricted HOA location. (When this virus stuff is over and I can
get help, a small tower and a decent antenna will be erected).

The K3 is factory built and does not have an ATU. I get a 99 high swr reading
on every band the antenna is tuned for, I replaced coax and connectors three
times. My Rig Expert analyzer shows swr below 2 on the two bands I wish to use,
40m and 20m. In Tune the external P3000 shows swr below 2, however the K3 still
shows 99.

I’ve looked through the archives and I can’t find the answer I was looking
for. (one that didn’t require sending the radio back to the factory). I am
hoping for an answer involving pilot error and an easy fix. The movers didn’t
handle the radio, I white glove delivered it to the new house myself.

I don’t own a dummy load yet, having sold everything but the K3 when I went to
an HOA restrictive community for five years.

Any help would be appreciated.

[Elecraft] P3 & VGA card

2020-02-19 Thread Chris Reed
Hi ,
I have a K3S and P3 with VGA card to run another display and was expecting to
see a duplicate of the P3 screen in larger format. It’s true I can see the
waterfall and data decode, but not seeing the tx signal status. If this is its
limit, I’d probably say the vga card is unnecessary.
Running a low cost sdr and the software to drive the K3 from the PC works well
though.
Vy pleased with the K3S, but a tad disappointed with the P3 TBF.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 RFI on 10 Meters

2019-12-16 Thread Chris Codella, W2PA

Scott,

I noticed the same thing this last weekend, having not been on 10 much
since getting the amp. But I found the noise to be quite variable. It
doesn't always occur. When it does, it appears suddenly, out of the
blue while operating.

Sometimes I could make it go away by turning off the power, waiting a
while, then restarting. I also got it to stop a couple of times by
sending a single "dit" while in operate mode. Quite strange. I'm trying
to get more data but it does seem to be an intermittent thing and hard
to replicate.

This noise didn't affect any band below 10m but appeared very
broad-banded above, using an SDR receiver.

Re: [Elecraft] case for KX3?

2019-11-09 Thread Chris Parfitt
Good evening, Mike:

I definitely concur with Steve in leaving room to have enough padding on all
sides. Just now, I checked as I have an unused Apache 1800. My KX3 would fit;
however, there is not enough room for padding on the sides. With the left side
of the KX3 almost touching the interior wall, the BNC connector was about half
an inch or so from the right wall.

The 2800 would have more than enough room. For reference, I keep mine in a
Pelican 1200, and there is just enough room for the transceiver, hand mic, and
power cable. I hope this helps.

Re: [Elecraft] 4k monitors for the shack, late 2019

2019-11-08 Thread Chris R. NW6V
Hi Scott.

You wrote "What can people suggest for quasi-affordable *RF-quiet* 4k
displays in
the 27-40" range?"

I'm using an LG 27UD69P that I picked up as open stock at Best-Buy last
year and am quite satisfied. It's beautiful.

It does have an external PS, and is very happy to run off the same supply
as the rest of the rig, as is the Intel NUC PC it's connected to (Tim Duffy
of DXE uses these at every position of the K3LR super-station). This was an
important consideration because I wanted to be able to run the whole rig,
computer and all, off a big ol' 100AH LiPO battery, both for emergency use,
and when I wanted to kill all the noise possible when chasing DX down into
said noise.

I made the change to this configuration last year, before I retired as an
IT director, so at the time I had access to a number of DC-driven monitors.
This LG was the quietest of the four I tested. One Dell (not 4K) was a
hell-hole of RFI... :-)

Although this monitor was the "quietest" of the bunch, it was not
completely quiet. But. as Jim K9YC noted, I put ferrites on both the HDMI
and power lines to eliminate "noticeable" RFI.

I say noticeable because I "monitored the monitors" with a panadapter
running on a laptop hooked to the station antennas. Once the ferrites were
installed on this LG, what remained was but the faintest trace on 12M, *at
the antenna, *and that was good enough for me.

As another mentioned, the "noticeable" aspect of the RFI is important. If I
hold my RFI sniffer (a Kenwood TH-F6 HT) within about a foot of the
monitor, oriented at one specific angle, it is still putting out RFI. But
since I can't see the RFI at the antenna, that RFI is not impacting my
operations: The inverse-square law is reducing the intensity below
"noticeable" levels by the time it gets to the antennas, which is all that
matters.

And that of course is in the context of my background noise levels, which
at this city QTH are high (even after extensive mitigation work). So
background noise could render this internally generated noise undetectable.
But my existing system is sensitive enough to notice the differences among
several switching and analog supplies, so I'm satisfied that I'm not overly
QRMing myself.

So: I suggest testing whatever monitor you select, and buy enough snap-on
ferrites and extra-long cables (for enough turns) to filter any remaining
RFI.

Also, If you can get the monitor at a best-buy or some other place that
allows returns without restocking fees, you should be able to find one that
fits all your criteria.

Please let us all know what you find that works!

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 fuses

2019-10-15 Thread Chris Parfitt
I certainly agree with Don. As I try to keep a modular approach for my
equipment, I use Powerpoles on everything. For portable equipment, I created
short fused cables from ATC blade fuses (just got them from Walmart or an auto
parts store) and some black 12-gauge wire with Powerpoles on both ends. With
the Powerpoles, I can use on any cable close to the power source.

Hope this helps,
Chris, AC4MP

[Elecraft] September 25th is VAIL Day - The First Telegrapher

2019-09-24 Thread Chris R. NW6V
Greetings.

Wednesday 25 September 2019 is the 212th birthday of Alfred Vail.

While Samuel F. B. "Finley" Morse is correctly credited with conceiving and
parenting the telegraph as a communication system - the global wired
information network and business - the details of how information was to be
passed across that network, using human operators, was largely the work of
his partner, Alfred Vail.

In other words, Morse invented the "electro-magnetic telegraph," but Vail
was "The First Telegrapher."

Among other things, Vail invented the straight key, the up/down printing
register (which first revealed the signals as "dots and dashes"),
discovered "copy-by-ear" (listening to the thunking of his printing
register), and authored "American Morse" (to increase efficiency and
throughput using his keys and printers). Vail may also have invented the
original dot-dash alphabet, which was used for some early demonstrations,
and was at worst its co-author.

I'm writing a book about all that, hoping to pierce the fog of time and
render our understanding more clearly. But one thing was abundantly clear:
Morse's telegraph was the first "smart device" - made so by the inclusion
of the telegrapher's mind as an integral component of the system -
performing "copy by ear." This gave it a critical market advantage early on
when line quality was terrible, and mechanical reliability poor.

As a matter of the greatest irony, until its inevitability was forced upon
him by those economic realities, and the weight of telegraphers almost
universally practicing it, Morse was strongly opposed to copy-by-ear
because it diminished the importance of "permanent printouts," which were a
key distinguishing feature of his original invention and the original
patents.

You see, Morse never imagined copy-by-ear would happen, or that it was
important.

Vail lived it.

So: I'm commemorating Vail's birthday by using a replica of Vail's straight
key for all QSOs on the 25th, and I'll be calling "CQ VVV." There's a
picture on my QRZ page. The key works well up into the low 20s, but I'm
always happy to QRS.

Feel free to join in and send some Vs yourself! Hope to work you on the
air! Oh, and I'll be using a K3 and KPA500...:-)

2019-06-22 Thread Chris Waldrup
Yes sir using 7AH gel cell.
Just found out the issue as it works to 15W on a bench supply so the issue was
pointed out to me by a kind list member that this is intentional limiting while
on lower capacity batteries.

Re: [Elecraft] New K1 Kit

2019-06-06 Thread Chris
I agree. SMD soldering is actually much faster than through holes because
you don't have to trim leads. It is just a matter of getting used to small
parts. Magnifying glasses will definitely be necessary for most of us.
Reviving K1 with SMD parts will make a very trail-friendly radio.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 PLL reference oscillator problems (DAC side!)

2019-05-29 Thread Chris Smith
Hi,

I have replaced the J310 and the oscillator now runs over the full voltage
range of the DAC. Many thanks. After this, the PLL calibration routine
completes successfully. The EEPROM appears to be ok here.

So at a high level the issue appears to be:

1. The J310 or circuit was at fault. Either the J310 device spread is suspect
or the circuit is device spread sensitive. Having built a few VXOs over the
years some problems are almost inevitable here so it's expected really.
2. The default EEPROM contents without PLL calibration have no calibration data
so it's not possible to tune the oscillator down into a running state, not that
it'd help potentially based on point 3.
2. The default DAC value of full scale pegs the varactors at full swing
resulting in the oscillator not starting.
3. The PLL calibration routine will not run if the oscillator is not running
which is fair enough.

Diagnostic steps to positively identify the issue:

1. Reset K2 (456+power up) to clear cal data. This will wedge the DAC at full
scale.
2. Hook scope/counter to TP3 (internal counter is fine). If there is a signal
here at around 12MHz, then the oscillator works. No further diagnostics
required.
3. Lift one end of R19 to disconnect the DAC from the PLL oscillator.
4. Hook bench supply to RP2 pin 2 or 4. Set on 0V. 9v battery with 1k pot
across it and DMM on wiper terminal will do if you don't have a bench supply.
5. Sweep bench supply across 0-8V and ensure that there is a signal at TP3
across the entire range.
6. If there isn't replace Q19 (J310) and retry until there is oscillation
across the entire range.
7. Reinsert and solder lifted end of R19.
8. Complete PLL calibration.

As a test, I also tried an NOS On Semiconductor J310 (which arrived the same
time as Elecraft's replacement!) and that worked consistently across the board.
I have however substituted the Elecraft supplied replacement which matches the
On Semi one now as well.

Thanks to Don for landing on this issue straight away. Next steps in progress
now.

Best regards,

Chris M0XTE

[Elecraft] KX2 & FT8

2019-05-21 Thread Chris Bull
Hello Group. I am a fairly new Elecraft and KX2 user. Long story short
would any KX2 geniuses be willing to share their radio settings for FT8
with me.
I am using WSJT-X and understand setting and operation of it with my 7300.

I just need help with KX2 radio settings. I am setting up a small ASUS
Zenbook with KX2 for portable FT8 operation will take it with me to VK2
land in a couple weeks so I can FT8 over there.

I hear lots of warbling on the FT8 frequencys through the radio. Is Data A
the correct mode to use?
.
I have CAT control to the radio and with the mike and speaker cable
connected hear warbling from PC speakers. WJST-X settings are nominal
also Unless there are secret KX2 WSJT-X setting.
Maybe there will be a FT8 setting in the next firmware release. nudge nudge.
Thank You

Re: [Elecraft] K2 PLL reference oscillator problems (DAC side!)

2019-05-21 Thread Chris Smith
Hi,

That makes sense. I assume this is a bootstrap problem then i.e. the J310 has
to be oscillating in the default state before the VCO linearisation can run and
set up the LUT inside the EEPROM. Making a large assumption there of course as
I can't see the source code!

I tried the 10pF trick from another thread that you mentioned before after
researching this issue and unfortunately that didn't start the oscillation.

I did some experiments and will complete one more:

Experiment 1 Did a hard reset (456+power up) to see if it reset the data.
It showed the initialisation info message. FAIL

Experiment 2 I just checked the VXO range by pulling R19 and using another
bench supply. The thing gives a relatively reliable 3v p-p until the varactor
control voltage hits 6.8V then it stalls. Obviously as DAC output eventually
ends up at 7.07V it's game over straight up.

Experiment 3 If I leave R19 lifted and run the PLL cal it doesn't throw
info 232 straight away but appears to hang, probably because there's no control
voltage doing anything which is hopeful if it works how I think it does!

Experiment 4 (in progress) I'm going to put a J309 in (I don't have any
spare J310s I don't think and this is same FET but binned with different Idss)
and see if it oscillates across the full range. I will then run PLL cal. If
that works then it'll at least clarify first assumption.

I checked /DAC2CS and it does indeed go low during the load operation. The
issue is the control data sent to the DAC is the same.

Thanks for your help. Some ideas to try!

Best regards,

Chris

Re: [Elecraft] K2 PLL reference oscillator problems (DAC side!)

2019-05-21 Thread Chris Smith
Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated.

That’s a bummer. Is there anything I can do here with the current EEPROM? I
have a programmer available. I assuming erasing it and letting the K2
reinitialise it a small per earlier steps won’t resolve this?

Based on looking at it from the outside naively, it feels like theres something
up with the VCO linearisation as it’s sending the control word on VFO steps but
the same data. I’ll get a bus captures if it helps.

Assume that performing the VCO linearisation steps later won’t fix it either?

Hope you enjoy your vacation - sounds nice!

Best regards,

Chris M0XTE

[Elecraft] K2 PLL reference oscillator problems (DAC side!)

2019-05-21 Thread Chris Smith
Hi,

I've just completed my K2 up to the PLL reference oscillator.

Initially when I assembled it the PLL reference oscillator would not oscillate
at all. No reading on internal counter. I popped it on my external Racal
counter and still dead. After tracing the problem out I found that the voltage
on input to the varactors was pegged at 7.07V which was too high for the
oscillation to carry on. I lifted one end of R19 on the output of U6A and the
thing oscillates fine isolating this to a control voltage problem.

Next I checked voltages on the thermistor board and input of the opamp. All
good. However the input to U6A pin 3 from the LTC1451 DAC is stuck at 4.095V
(top end of DAC range by the looks of it) which is forced up by the opamp.
Popped U5 DIN on the scope and spun the VFO and it sends the same data word to
the DAC every time regardless of VFO position. The CLK and CS lines are doing
their thing correctly.

Anyone got any ideas why the control word is the same? VFO reading on display
is changing fine.

What can I do to get out of this hole?

Any help appreciated.

Best regards,

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 AC Mains wire colours

2019-05-20 Thread Chris Cox, N0UK
Sorry, I'm not being pedantic but standard US home supply is NOT two phaes
plus ground, it is still single phase 120-0-120 Vac with the 0 volt being
grounded and tied to the neutral line for each of the two anti-phase hot
lines.

The power is distributed around the area as three phase and each of those
three phases is then typically split between three properties at the
outdoor powerpole.

[Elecraft] K2 encoder (new version) fitting problem and solution

2019-05-16 Thread Chris Smith
Hi all,

First post so hello.

Currently building my first Elecraft product, a K2. Got to the encoder assembly
and tripped over a bit of a problem. The encoder would not sit flat in the hole
in the front panel as the hole is actually only very slightly smaller than the
encoder's shaft. I've seen another post mentioning this and reaming out the
panel as a solution which was a no for me as it firstly wrecks the nice paint
job and secondly makes the knob poke out too far.

I sat for a bit and thought and then dug through the junk box and found a
~1.8mm thick M10 washer (10.05mm internal diameter). I used a cheap Noga
deburring tool to widen this out to 10.4mm. This now sits over the metal sleeve
on the encoder (not on the plastic body - never do this!) and allows it to sit
flat in the front panel without rocking and be tightened down without damage.
The encoder board does not foul the control board either.

Cruddy MS Paint cross section: https://m0xte.uk/pub/k2-encoder-mount.png

Hope someone finds this useful.

Re: [Elecraft] XV144 ATF34143 phemt equivalent

2019-04-22 Thread Chris Reed
Hi Don,
I had thought about it, but it's a long way to send it and figured i should be
able to find something more local.
The Doc's suggested an equivalent which I can get ( I'll get a few just in
case), so will give it a go and see if fixes it. It certainly down on
sensitivity, my IC7400 is better on 2m at the moment.
Thank you for the quick response, very much appreciated.
