Thanks Bruce; I admit I was hoping for, but forgot to specify, doing it with a
software command (power down is available as a software command)…

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 Faulting for High SWR inappropriately

2022-12-19 Thread David F. Reed

Lou,

I appreciate the suggestion, but it is with a K4D, properly cabled, used
to work fine, and does it on some bands but not others... changed the
delay to 15ms and still does it... Also seems to depend on band; for
example, does it on 10m, not on 12m...

Also, below, I said 2 SWR meters; I meant 3...

Check the delay setting on your transmitter. You might have a hot switching

with a K3 or K4 without the 15-pin Elecraft interface cable, you’ll want at
least 10ms of delay to avoid that. I had that issue with a K4 and a PGXL.
Default on the K4 is 8ms and the PGXL needed 10ms.

Is this what I should expect, or should I go about re-calibrating Power

[Elecraft] KPA1500 - loose hardware on return from repair

2022-07-05 Thread David F. Reed
When I received my KPA-1500 back from repair, the repair was done very
well but disappointingly, the reassembly had 2 loose screws; fortunately
the were only on the cover and still in but needed tightening - they
were barely started in the holes...

Another disappointment in the process was they seemed to have forgotten
to ship the amplifier when it was repaired (there was an understandable
delay due to no boxes thanks to the paper shortage, but they received
the boxes, and forgot to ship my amplifier until I called again and
asked what happened...

I suspect these incidents all to be excess rush causing careless errors,
as before this COVID messed everything up, I never had any unhappy
experience with them, and there was probably less rush.

In any case, I am very happy with my K4D and KPA1500, and would be
reluctant to part with them even at twice what I paid for them...

[Elecraft] KPA1500 reduces power as it gets warmer?

2022-06-03 Thread David F. Reed

I note my KPA1500 drops power at its temperature rises...

Using FT8, so a relatively high duty cycle.

Say I start at a heat sink temperature of 27 C, and 1,000 watts out; by
the time the temperature is at 65 C, the power has dropped to 893 watts out.

I have a couple of questions about this (not a complaint by the way):

1. Does anyone else experience this?
2. Is it normal?

Re: [Elecraft] K4 beta software release 29 is now available

2022-03-23 Thread David F. Reed
Unfortunately, when I "Check for Updates" I only see the Beta release of
R29; am I missing something, or was the email missing "Beta"

Thanks & 73 de Dave, W5SV

On 03/24/2022 02:52 AM, Wayne Burdick wrote:

Release 29 of K4 software is now available for download. You can read the
release notes below, or from within the UPDATE function at the radio itself.

NOTE: If the UPDATE function doesn't succeed at downloading the new software on
the first try, please try a second time. We're working to improve this
situation.

This release will be of particular interest to SSB operators, since it adds a
new, highly effective speech compression algorithm and CESSB (control-envelope
SSB). The combination of the two provides as much as 8 dB of increase in
average talk power. This should be very useful for those participating in the
CQ WPX SSB contest this weekend.

CW operators will want to try out the new, much tighter filters for bandwidths
of 50/100/150/200 Hz. In field testing, these have proven to provide a huge
advantage in heavy QRM.

Wayne
N6KR

 RELEASE 29

March 22, 2022

NOTE: The RX DVR feature (AF REC/AF PLAY) has been deferred until the next
software release in order to complete more extensive testing.

= FUNCTIONAL CHANGES =

ENHANCED SPEECH COMPRESSION & CESSB: Speech compression has been dramatically
improved. Controlled Envelope Single Sideband (CESSB) has also been implemented.
Together, these boost average talk power by up to 8 dB, with virtually no RF
overshoot or in-band distortion. Any nonzero setting of CMP also engages CESSB.
Compression also now applies to Extended Single Sideband (wide transmit bandwidths).

TX NOISE GATE: This feature is available in all voice modes. Set up using
MENU:TX Noise Gate Threshold. Default is OFF. If a non-zero value is selected,
mic audio will be suppressed during transmit when it is below the given
threshold.

NEW NARROW CW FILTERS: We've added new CW filtering for the 50/100/150/200 Hz
settings -- the highest-performance narrow filters we've ever offered. These
filters have much steeper skirts, yet exhibit minimal ringing. They're enabled
by default, but can be turned off using the RX CW IIR Filters menu entry. When
they're off, the filters will be the same as they are now (FIR). These filters
are centered on 50 Hz pitch increments, which means that the narrowest filter
width (50 Hz) slightly favors 50 Hz increments of the sidetone PITCH setting.
For example, if you were using a 530 Hz sidetone, consider using 500 or 550 Hz
instead.

ALL-MODE SQUELCH: Main and sub receiver squelch can now be used in all modes.
The settings are independent.

NOISE BLANKER QRM FILTERING: All noise blankers can be compromised by strong
nearby signals. If you hear artifacts, use the NB LEVEL control to turn NB QRM
filtering on, then retry different NB levels. There are 3 NB filter settings:

NARROW: K4 bases NB filter on regular RX bandwidth (as low as 1 kHz)
WIDE: K4 applies a 5 kHz NB filter
NONE: pre-NB filtering off (BW ahead of NB ~24 kHz)

NOTE: The NARROW and WIDE settings may reduce effectiveness on some noise
types, so use NONE when there's no QRM.

NEW AM DEMODULATOR: Our new AM demodulator provides excellent audio fidelity,
with up to 5 kHz audio bandwidth and enhanced pre-demodulator filtering.

IMPROVED FM DEMODULATOR.

VFO CURSOR OFF-SCREEN ICONS: The panadapter now provides color-coded arrows
(A=blue, B=green) that appear if the associated VFO frequency is off-screen.
The arrow shows the off-screen direction.

VFO COARSE TUNING RATES (PER-MODE): Added a new menu entry, VFO Coarse Tuning, that
specifies which of four per-mode tuning rates is to be used when the KHZ switch function
is selected. (This is equivalent to the K3's COARSE switch function.) For example, in SSB
mode, the "KHZ" tuning rate options are 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.5 kHz. When the
user-specified KHZ rate is selected, the VFO digit underline changes from white to gold.
These selections also apply to the RIT control whenever RIT is *OFF* and MENU:RIT Knob
Alt Function is set to VFO CRS. Tapping VFO digits to select a tuning rate overrides the
KHZ tuning rate.

NEW TRANSMIT MONITOR LINE-OUT MODES: Menu entry "TX Monitor Level, Line Out" sets the level of the
transmit monitor signal (sidetone or voice) at the LINE OUT analog jack as well as digital line out (USB-B
jack). At the default setting ("=MON"), the LINE OUT TX monitor level reflects the setting of the
regular XMTR-MON knob function. Rotating VFO A counter-clockwise from here will select "OFF" mode
(no TX monitor line out signal). The other available settings (numeric) will scale the LINE OUT transmit
monitor function upward, which is useful for some external devices such as audio recorders. (These values
will also prevent K4 switch tones from being heard at LINE OUT.) Max TX monitor LINE OUT level

[Elecraft] My KPA1500 bricked itself...

2022-03-14 Thread David F. Reed
My KPA1500 decided to stop working (no response to RF input, no bypass
power on/off.

I tried cycling power, to no avail.

Then I tried reloading the microcode (It was on the current version),
and lo and behold, everything was good again.

Dunno what went wrong, or why, but it was an unnerving experience.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 to K4D "Upgrade": Satisfied?

2022-03-04 Thread David F. Reed
Jim,

I have received my K4D and love it. It is definitely even better than my K3.

I have been considering selling my K3, but hesitate because I might use it for
POTA, but I could do the QRP with my KX2 instead and with less logistical
hassle.

As soon as spring comes, I will try that out and if I am happy with it will
sell my beloved K3.

Good luck with your decision.

It might help if we knew more about the antenna system; what antenna,
balun, power rating of them vs. power running, RF feed back in shack,
any other info might help us point at what to look at...

I used to have some similar events, and got rid of them with a

[Elecraft] RFI

2021-12-19 Thread David F. Reed

Due to some HOA C, I am confined to attic and gutter antennas for the
time being.

I am getting a bit of RFI on occasion into my PC; it manifests itself
mainly by apparently disconnecting the com port from Commander.  When
this happens, I can restore functionality by selecting a different com
port, and then re-selecting the original correct com port.

I am grounded to a 10' ground rod about 8 ft. from the station via 2"
copper strap. I did install ferrite beads on the USB cables at the back
of the PC as well as on the power cord, and this has reduced the
frequency of occurrence, but I would like to eliminate it altogether.

Any other ideas and suggestions would be most appreciated!

Thanks & 73 de Dave, W5SV

[Elecraft] loop antenna question

2021-10-23 Thread David F. Reed
My new home QTH is an a neighborhood where I am affected by the
covenants and restrictions to no outside antennas.

Not to be defeated, I am planning some attic antennas...

Towards that end, has anyone any experience with the Ciro Mazzoni Loop Baby?

If so, how have you interfaced it to communicate with your (K3/K3S/K4)?

Re: [Elecraft] wall outlet for KPA1500

2021-08-06 Thread David F. Reed
The electrician was confused; there is a similar 120V only plug, the difference
being the horizontal and vertical blades are on opposite sides of the plug!

When I showed him the NEMA drawings, he quickly got sorted out and went with
the flow (apologetically).

[Elecraft] Plug on KPA-1500

2021-08-05 Thread David F. Reed
I am in a bit of a situation here… in trying to get a 240 V circuit wired for
the shack to fit the plug coming from my KPA1500, the electrician tells me that
it is a 120 V plug, and that is it against the law for him to wire a socket for
that to 240 V.

Here is a photo of the power plug my KPA1500 came with:David F. Reed

[Elecraft] Mode not Switching with band change?

2021-03-25 Thread David F. Reed
I am running an Elecraft K3 and a KPA1500 amplifier. I use the DXLab
Suite of programs for logging, rig control and so on.

If I do a manual band change on either the K3 or using the KPA1500 and
change back and forth between 15m and 40m, the side band changes
appropriately.

If I do it using the Commander Bandspread window buttons and go from 15
to 40, it stays in USB.  I can then do a MODE ALT to get the correct
mode, but it doesn't stick if I go back and forth.

FWIW, going to 80 has the same issue...

I suspect the K3/KPA1500 set are working correctly since the only
misbehavior is when I do it with Commander.

Has anyone else seen this, fixed it, or have any hints?

[Elecraft] KPA1500 enhancement request

2020-10-17 Thread David F. Reed
It would be very nice if the KPA1500 would remember on a per band basis
whether the mode was STBY or OPER the way it remember if the ATU is IN
or BYP; to an outsider, this seems like not a big ask and it would make
overdriving the amp easier to avoid as there are some bands I don't use
it on...

[Elecraft] Interfacing KX2 to KPA1500

2020-09-01 Thread David F. Reed
I am trying to drive my KPA1500 with my KX2; I know I will get about 200
watts output which is fine.  I want to do it for the time period between
selling my K3 and receiving my K4.

I have  the KXPACBL_KXPA100 Integrated Cable and KX2ACBL_KX2 Accessory
Cable set, but am unsure how I hook it up.  It seems there will be some
leftover stuff dangling...

Anyone out there done this that can clue me in please?

Re: [Elecraft] Seeking comments on Ham Expo from participants

2020-08-23 Thread David F. Reed
I think the Ham Expo was a good idea for our current times but I do not see it
as a permanent replacement for the in person events. Perhaps going forward, the
in person events could have a remote access side like Ham Expo.

I particularly enjoyed the Elecraft sessions, much more than the others; they
seem to have thought the format through better and also more interesting
subject matter (to me at least). I also liked not being crowded out of hearing
a good show.

[Elecraft] K3 power up message question

2020-07-18 Thread David F. Reed
When my K3 powers up, I get a message that flashes "AMP" on the screen
(VFO B display) first, then my programmed message; what does the "AMP"
tell me?

I note further when I turn on my KPA1500, my k3 tells me KPA500 (I guess
I cannot update that?); when I switch the KPA1500 from STBY to OPER, it
says OPERATE.

So, why would it tell me AMP on power up (even with the amp disconnected
and powered off)?

And, is there a way to get it to report KPA1500 instead of KPA500?

Thanks all & 73

[Elecraft] K3 / MH2 PTT problem

2020-07-14 Thread David F. Reed
I have a new problem crop up seemingly with the PTT on my MH2 / K3
setup; sometimes it works fine, but might drop out in the middle of a
transmission, with the K3 display momentarily displaying (it flashes by
pretty fast) something about PTT Problem...

I am trying to figure out if there is anything to check besides taking
the microphone apart and cleaning/de-oxing it.

Any hints would be welcome.

[Elecraft] KPA1500

2020-07-09 Thread David F. Reed
I recently received and installed my KPA1500 (paired with a K3);
followed instructions and the setup went without a hitch; it now has all
bands tuned in memory, and is a breeze to use.  I am getting right at
1500 watts out with drive ranging from mid 20s to mid 30s, depending on
the band (less on lower bands, toward mid 30s on 6m).

Very happy with it; just wanted to leave a quick report.  Now I just
have to get over my impatience for a K4.

[Elecraft] SSTV & K3/K3S?

2020-06-29 Thread David F. Reed
I am thinking of trying SSTV and have a K3 that is almost a K3S, so it
has the USB & sound card built it.

I am looking for any setup info that might help; I am running MMSSTV.

I assume it would use DATA mode; is that correct?

Any other info like power to limit it to, setting ALC, (I assume
compression off)

Obviously, I don't know much and would like to get running with minimal
discomfort or displeasure to those I share the bands with.

[Elecraft] Station for sale

2019-11-12 Thread David F. Reed
Due to an upcoming move, I am putting my complete ham station for sale (will
reconstruct another one when I am settled into the new QTH, wherever and
whenever that ends up being).

Antenna system:
70 ft. Self supporting aluminum tower, 3 element quad covering 20, 17, 15, 12,
10 and 6m (4 elements on 6), dipoles (bazooka type) for 75/80 and 160M, and a
160’ folded dipole (for covering 60, 40, and 30 m) and about 400’ hardline.
Tower and antennas will require takedown and disassembly.

Station:
Elecraft K-line consisting of loaded K3 (upgraded to near K3S, with dual
receivers, 2.8, 2.1 and 400 Hz filters, DVR, 2M transverter built in, P3 (has
VGA output and power meter accessories), KPA-500, KAT-500, Station Master,
remote coax switch…

All is operational and available for evaluation.

I am hoping to net about $6,000 for it all; $5000 for the station. While I am
open to splitting it up, I would prefer a package deal, especially for the
Elecraft stuff (yes, I have a K4 ordered)…

[Elecraft] band decode/antenna switch controller

2019-06-06 Thread David F. Reed
In planning my next station, I have not found one item I would like to
add...

I wish to automatically select the correct antenna per band when using a K3
or K4 with associated amplifier. The objective is to select the
appropriate 1 of 8 possibilities remotely, I am currently doing this
satisfactorily with a microHam StationMaster, but it has a lot more
capabilities that I am not using, and for my next station, a simpler band
decode, select remote antenna capability would be what I am looking for.

I thought Elecraft used to offer such a best, but I can't seem to find it.
Suggestion?

[Elecraft] K3-0 mini microcode?

2019-01-18 Thread David F. Reed

A few questions about the k3-0 mini microcode...

1. Does the K3-0 use the same microcode as the K3?
2. are we supposed to keep it in sync with microcode releases?
3. Do the K3-0 and the K3 need to be running the same release?

Re: [Elecraft] internet speed for remote K3S

2018-09-01 Thread David F. Reed
My experience is exactly that; look out for latency; that is the
killer.  Yes you need a minimal speed that is pretty good, but latency
is a big issue; for example the satellite based ISPs are useless for
this; adequate for streaming movies, etc. but latency is way to high...

Hi David,

I've never done this, but reading from what others have done, I
suspect that latency may be as important as speed, especially if you
want to do CW contesting or break a DX pileup.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] factory upgrade to K3(s)

2018-06-27 Thread David F. Reed
I upgraded by K3 to as close to a K3S as I could; I am very happy with
it.  Is it a K3S? No, but in the ways that matter to me, it is... I feel
like it cost me less than selling it and buying a K3S would have, and
will be worth a bit more when I finally sell it.

As for not exchanging yours after a month, it is not COSTCO... How far
in advance should they stop selling one product before its replacement
comes out? How far back should they be willing to do an exchange? I fear
there are no good answers for a small company that needs some cash flow
to keep progressing during development; nailing down exact dates for FCC
acceptance and supplier readiness and so on can be difficult, and
besides, I have learned to measure the goodness of my purchase decisions
based on "was it a good decision based on all information available to
me at the time?".  If so, relax, be happy.

Anyway Ronnie, you might look into upgrading, I have been happy doing it.

Especially since as you know, an "up-graded" K3 still is NOT a K3S.
Gold fingers, built-in pre-amp etc., ae a couple that come to mind.

The only logical step to me, was to pull the accessories that were the same
and sell the radio.
Admittedly, I couldn't get as much for my K3 as I would have been able to if
the K3S hadn't been released.
But to me this is the normal cycle of newer radios. AND, I didn't have junk
parts to deal with.
Yeah, I know, the boards aren't really worth zero, but what do I do with

Anyway, I'm happy now with my "new" K3S and my old K3 is still on the air

I had mine done last year. The K3 cannot be fully upgraded to a K3s,

Perusing the Elecraft website will give you a pretty good idea, and if
you have questions just email support and discuss what you have, what
they can do, and what you want... then they can give you a much better
idea than I can.

I already had the new synths in my K3, and the upgrades I opted for
came in at close to, but somewhat under $1000 including shipping.

Best of luck,

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Boldly OT: 6 meter Sporadic-E season and the FT-8 microjuggernaut

2018-06-01 Thread David F. Reed
I agree; the FT-8 thing has had a lot of negative impact; some of the other
modes that take longer, but are weak signal modes were far less
devastating; people used lower power and got along more or less without
interfering too much except with other JT modes...
I think the quick turn part of FT8 contributed to its rapid growth, and the
use of it with high power made it worse.

I am back to longing for a simple CW contact at a leisurely pace... Back to
my KX2 (serial number 72!) for a little fun on 30 M.

[Elecraft] K3 serial port fix?

2018-05-30 Thread David F. Reed
How difficult is it to replace (realize I am challenged in the delicate
touch department) whatever board in the K3 does the serial
port/interface to the radio?

Is it likely a go back to the factory thing or an easy desktop job for a
klutz (me)?

The reason I ask this is my K3 suddenly seems to respond to input from
DXLab Commander, but not send out changes like VFO, band switching,
etc.  I suspect its the K3. and will confirm tomorrow by using a
different PC to talk to it...

Thoughts?

[Elecraft] RF feedback? only when using KXPA100

2017-08-05 Thread David F. Reed

This did not used to happen; it is new to my set-up, nothing I am aware
of has changed...

When trying to operate JT65, if I set the power to 10 watts, everything
is fine (KXPA100 is not active).
If I set to anything above 10 watts (yeah, like 11 watts or more), I get
bad RF feedback (sounds like motor boating in monitor).
SWR via tune looks good, all cables have been taken out, checked and
re-inserted.

I am stumped and looking for hints as to what I ought to look at next,
or re-check or try.

Try switching to PTT instead of VOX. I don't know your software
application nor its capabilities, but you likely need a "one transistor
keying interface" to drive the KX3 PTT input.

[Elecraft] Many thanks

2017-02-01 Thread David F. Reed

Dear folks at Elecraft and on the list;

I have been enjoying Elecraft products for many years, starting with a
K1, then a K2, then a KX2... followed by my current K3, KX3, and KX2.

I use the K3 as my mainradio in the shack. It is fairly loaded with the
second receiver and nice filters and supplemented by a P3 and a KPA500
and KAT500. They feed a 3 element Quad up 75 feet on 20 - 6 meter, and
dipoles for 160 - 30 meters.

I use the KX3 as a secondary station in my library with different
antennas and a KXP3 and KXPA100.

I use the KX2 as my portable station when I am out camping or on a picnic.

Over the years, I have come to anticipate the new releases from Elecraft
eagerly.

I just wanted to thank Elecraft for their top notch designs and customer
support which I have benefited from more than once, and to thank the
list for their support as well; they have contributed significantly to a
hobby I have enjoyed now for some 59 years and hope to for a few more years.

best 72 for the QRPers, & 73 for the QROers out there.

[Elecraft] Getting higher gain from input of line in or rear panel mic on K3

2016-11-17 Thread David F. Reed
I am trying to get set up for JT9 in Data A mode; I am not getting
enough drive from the sound card to adequately drive the K3.

I am wondering (but cannot figure out from the manual) how to achieve
this using either Line In or the rear mic jack when in Data A, and get
more gain, but not use the front mic (leave it connected but not get
audio from it).

At the same time, the front mic is working fine (correct bias etc.) and
I don't want to loose this.

Surely someone must have solved this before me, and could help me figure
it out.

Don,

understood; the cables and PS and its connections are fine. I expect
what is happening is I am occasionally losing line power, which shuts

resetting things...

David,

The KX3 may still be running by virtue of the internal batteries if
the KXPA100 power drops, but that will not prevent the KX3 from
turning off the PA ON menu and dropping the power to 5 volts.

Check your power cable - look in the end of the APP connector. If you
see the end of 2 pieces of metal (both the spring finger and the
contact blade) the contact blade is not latched, give it a push from
the wire side until it latches.

Check the connections at your power supply, they must be tight - if
you can move them at all, they are not tight. Also check the fuse and
fuseholder. The fuse must make tight contact with the fuseholder
contacts.
