[Elecraft] K3 IO1 Error Message

2010-06-07 Thread Chris G3SJJ
When I switched on my K3 on Saturday afternoon prior to using it in
Field Day it came up with IO1 error message. I will contact technical
support but wondered if anyone had experienced this before.

Associated symptoms are: Doesn't recognise Sub Rx, ATU or 100w PA, ie
max output is 12w.

It was working perfectly in the week and I am thinking a connector may
have worked lose in transit. Accessing the Field Day site involved a
drive along bumpy farm tracks and a steep grassy incline which my 4x4
SUV coped with OK but apparently not the K3!!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - SR2O

That's it!! I had forgotten about that menu setting. Works properly now.
I can detect some low level crosstalk but I suspect less than the
FT1kMP. Will check with some big sigs in WPX.

Thanks for all the responses.

Also it is possible to set L-MIX-R via programming over the serial

If those are correct, make sure you don't have a wiring error. The

[Elecraft] K3 Front Panel Problem

2008-09-14 Thread Chris G3SJJ
Having successfully installed the KRX3 I have a small problem on the
front panel which I think is due to either a poor ground connection or a
connector not fully mated.

On power all display segments show, which I can't remember seeing
before. Initially I could then see a lot of segments which cleared when
I pressed on the FP. Now I am seeing less unwanted segments which clear
when I press the left hand side of the FP, just to the rioght of the
headphone jack.

Before I take the FP off again has anyone an ideas where I should
concentrate on? Obviously around the left hand side but anything in
particular!

The 2nd Rx sounds great.

The MCU is in boot load status if the Red TX led is flashing.

Restart the K3 Utility so that it finds the K3 again and again determines
its baud rate (which will now be 38,400).

[Elecraft] KRX3 antenna routing

2008-08-07 Thread Chris G3SJJ
Whilst I am waiting for shipping notification of my KRX3, I have a
question on routing.

I have a specific contest application coming up where we will be using
SR2O. The idea is for the 2nd op to be monitoring a band other than the
Run band. We are only allowed one antenna and have designed it such that
the KAT3 will handle all the impedance presented on the various bands. I
had hoped that the K3/KAT3/KXV3/KR3X antenna routing would allow us to
connect the 2nd rx directly to the antenna
and not via the ATU. Studying the manual I can't see how that can be
done. Can anyone confirm this?

If not, I can make up a small relay box which takes a feed off the
antenna input to Ant 1 socket and feeds it to Aux RF on receive and
grounds Aux RF on transmit and I can switch it via the PA PTT switch on
my mHam Keyer. An internal switching solution would be more sophisticated!

Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 antenna routing

2008-08-07 Thread Chris G3SJJ
Hmm, that would be nice but I suspect we will mostly be running on a
lower band and searching for QSOs on a higher band. Eg, running 20m,
searching 10/15, running 40 searching 20, running 80 searching 40/20. If
we had a decent opening on 15/10 it might work. Thanks for the thought Al.

Altered the subject to Download! Well, one step forward, two steps back!

After several emails from Wayne lst night, and during his Sunday
afternoon I should add, so thanks, Wayne last night, I decided to switch
off.

I had managed to get the download done OK but transmitted audio wasn't
correct. It sounded as though the carrier oscillator was too high up the
passband slope.

Switched on this morning and everything was OK. It sounded really good.
It should have left it at that! Oh, no. I decided to do the overnight
upgrade and now I am back to square one.

I am in exactly the same positions as at first - Flashing Red LED, LCD
display not lit but MCU LD wording visible.

This time after holding the Power button down for 10 seconds I can start
another download but it fails after a while. Sometiems I get up to 10
bars, other times it stops at 3. I then get the error message MCU
programming failed. Verify file source and version. Turn the K3 off and
back on and retry

I have tried rebooting computer, switching K3 PSU off, holding Power
button down etc numerous times.

The only thing that I have done differently on this download is what
Stewart has mentioned below. I am using the mHam Keyer as my radio to
computer interface. If I could get the K3 to work I could go back to RS232!!

To get in a good state, remove the power from the K3, and then
hold the Power button for 10 secs. The TX light should come on,
and the display show MCU LD. It will then be receptive to another
upload attempt.

Re: [Elecraft] VP6DX -- the true story ?

2008-03-12 Thread G3SJJ

You can't get much better than that, Eric!!

I identified (whilst working VP6DX!) a similar situation to the 30m one.
It was as though the PLL wasn't locking. I don't do data modes so mine
was 30m CW Split. I emailed Gary at Elecraft and a mod was incorporated
in the next firmware upgrade, and it is perfect now. Excellent service

BTW, I worked all of my 12 band slots on the K3 using Split and pressing
Rev to listen to the awful Eu pile-up. The whole experience would have
been so much less stressful if European stations were more discipliined.
If he calls HB9 then why does a DL, SP, IZ, 9A or whatever transmit?!!

Thanks. Chris G3SJJ

Eric Scace K3NA wrote:

Some reported hiccups with the radios should be put into perspective:

1. We ran 8 radios x 24 hours x 16+ days of operating: over 3,000
hours on the air in total... plus additional hours for some units on
board ship.

2. Some glitches were unique a specific radio, or at most two
radios. As an example, late in the operation one radio seemed to show
a T/R relay problem where the receiver signals were down temporarily
(or longer) after a transmission. Another radio didn't want to power
off -- it would immediately come back to life after shutdown.
The high noise level was another singleton issue. One radio, only
on 30m, and only while in FSK mode, and only when operating split,
would have its receiver go into oscillation at the end of a FSK
transmission. If any one of those three conditions did not exist, the
radio worked fine. Obviously we moved that radio away from the
position with the 30m 4-square antenna control. We didn't see that
particular quirk on any other radio.

3. We were operating in a demanding field environment: hot
temperatures in the tents during the day, salty and dusty breezes
almost non-stop, and perhaps some voltage burbles when the generators
ran out of fuel unexpectedly.
On the later point, we did have sealed batteries floated across the
supply lines, which allowed us to continue operating (without the 1.5
kW amplifiers) when generator re-fueling or oil changes were made.
Those certainly helped smooth out any power supply variations.

4. Some items were equipment interaction issues. For example, our CW
keying (external to the K3) sometimes hung. We learned this was due
to RFI entering the laptop USB port via the external mouse cable, and
irritating the USB device driver for the microKeyer and/or the
microKeyer.

Almost all of the operators ran the K3 with AGC off (all modes).

Hi,

besides the official report as quoted on the web,
on the BCC mailing list, reports from members of the VP6DX

While confirming superior receiver sensitivity, problems reported
were with pileup CW reception AGC, in T/R switching, and internal
noise of S9+20 that went away after powercycling

the K3 ???

Since I've just ordered my K3, I'd like to hear whether this has

[Elecraft] K3 SSB Tx problem

2008-02-27 Thread G3SJJ
I have been wrestling with this problem for a couple of weeks now and
can't find a solution. Maybe someone has experienced something similar
or can suggest where to look.

I am finalising my SO2R setup. Radio 1 is the K3, Radio 2 is my FT1kMP.
They both feed phones, CW, PTT and mic into a Topten DX Doubler, from
there into the mHam Keyer which provides the PC interface for Winkey for
CW plus Voice Keying via the PC sound card and finally serial interface
for the FT1kMP. Serial for the K3 is achieved through the KUSB. It all
works well on CW but SSB is a different matter.

When I go to transmit on SSB on the K3, there is some kind of
oscillation/ feedback. Very much like a rushing wind noise and is
superimposed on the transmitted signal. If I press the footswitch, all
is quiet but when I start speaking it appears to go into oscillation,
modulates when I talk and stops when I stop. The FT1kMP does not have
the same problem. Transmitted audio from the MP through the system is OK.

I have checked and re-soldered all connecting cables, and checked all
ground connections. The problem is presnt even when transmitting into a
dummy load and seems to reduce as I reduce the power control from 100w.
When the 100w PA switches it out it has almost gone, just a slight
trace. Turning the power up to the level where the 100w PA relays switch
brings the problem back.

If I unplug the cable from the K3 to the DX Doubler and plug my Heil
headset in everything works fine.

I have also tried unplugging different cables one by one but cannot come
to any specific conclusion.

Re: [Elecraft] W9XT Band Decoder with K3

2008-02-25 Thread G3SJJ
Interesting Dick. I have two TopTen Band Decoders, switching my Array
Solutions Sixpak plus Dunestar 600 bandpass filters. I had the original
source driver boards in the decoders and experienced occasional
switching problems. Dave N3RD supplied me with the new source driver
boards that don't have the same voltage drop and they work well. The K3
drives them fine also.

(A photo may appear in the next issue of RSGB Radcom since they asked me
for a photo of the K3 setup!)

Dick Dievendorff wrote:

Good choice, especially at that price!

I considered a pair of these, perhaps built in to the Array Solutions SixPak
controller, to drive the SixPack antenna switch and Hamation bandpass
filters.

I've decided to use a pair of Top Ten BD-Y-SD decoders because I want the
manual override capability at two different operator positions and I'm
sourcing 12V to an Array Solutions SixPak and a pair of Hamation bandpass
filters. The combined current draw might tax some sourcing drivers and the
voltage drop of the transistor source drivers in the new Top Ten decoders is
supposedly quite low, and the device's data sheet says it'll switch 5 amps.

The low voltage drop is important to me because I'm warned that the Array
Solutions SixPak switch really needs most of 13V to switch reliably, and you
don't have to add very many 0.7V drops together to get into trouble. I may
jumper the steering diode in the TTD decoder to further reduce voltage drop,
and I think this will be safe because all the 12V at my station is coming
from one big supply. If I mix in an ICOM radio I have I'll have to be
careful where the +12V is coming from.

A perhaps cheaper solution (which I may do if I do this again) might have
been to use the W9XT BCD-10 (or a circuit much like it) to drive some small
DIP relays and switch the high current source driven devices with the little
relays and avoid the transistor voltage drop. Array Solutions sells a $100
level converter which essentially does this. Somehow using relays to
switch relays seemed clumsy, but it may well be the most cost effective
solution. DIP relays aren't very expensive.

fragments of conversation on this reflector that 10K pull-up

[Elecraft] K3 - KUSB problem

2008-02-24 Thread G3SJJ
I am unable to get my K3 talking to either my laptop or my PC using the
KUSB serial adapter. It is probably something I am or am not doing! The
K3 interfaces perfectly well with my PC on standard Comm1 serial port
and works with Logger32 general logger and N1MM contest logger, as well
as downloading firmware updates.

I have updated the driver to the latest one as recommended. I have
selected 4800 on the K3, plus 8N1 4800 on each computer and the logging
programs. The port number is the same and I have tried other ports also.
Some Virtual Ports are set by mHam Router and I have avoided these. In
Device Manager I can see Proloific USB-to-Serial Comm Port and it
indicates everything is working OK.

Not sure where to go from here. Any ideas?

The problem with eHam reviews is not the reviews themselves, but that folks
get too caught up in caring about other people's mostly subject

Remember: Everyone's entitled to an opinion, but that doesn't mean that

Now, back to assembling my K3. Anyone else have clearance problems with the

Re: [Elecraft] Sub-RX Feature or Spilt Operation

2008-02-15 Thread G3SJJ
I have done this for all 5 band slots, on both modes, I have worked
VP6DX on so far including 20 CW just now. Likewise I am used SO2V on the
sub rx in my FT1kMP, (presumably that's what you mean by Dual Watch?) .
The main problem is not the K3 but is the stations in the pile-up. It is
ever so simple. If he sends your callsign you transmit, if he doesn't
send your callsign you don't transmit! What bit of that don't they
understand?!

From reading the manual, to operate split that B is the Xmit and
you can listen on B by using the REV button and holding it to
listen.

Is that correct? And, for those people who use a K3, how did that
work for you? Is it a clean operation?

Yes, that's how it works. You can use one hand to hold the REV button
and turn the knob, with a little practice.

It works as well as any radio with a single receiver can. You can
switch back and forth rapidly, but you can't listen to both VFOs at
the same time

bunch of trial and error time to figure this out. Let us know how it

I emailed N3RD a while ago to let them know. Dave said he had a K3
on order, and that they did intend to offer K3 cables. I made up a
generic cable from my TT DX Doubler to the K3, and that seems to
work well also. It's nice to use inputs all on the back of the K3, so
there are no cables to the front panel. Only issue is that the Mic
and Headphone jacks on the back are pretty frail and don't make very
positive contact sometimes.

On my FT1kMP use the band data out socket f for my TT Decoder and pick

[Elecraft] K3 TX Inhibit

2008-01-29 Thread G3SJJ
I recall a couple of months or so back there was vociferous discussion
about TX Inhibit being absolutely vital for linear amp switching. I use
this on my FT1kMP / Acom 1000 combo. Now that it has been included I
wonder if anyone is using it and where they get the +5v from for the
pull-up resistor.

I got some plops report over last weekend in the CQWW160CW contest and
suspect it was hot switching because I was using VOX as I hadn't
incorporated Comm PTT at that stage. I think this would solve the
problem but I would also like to include TX Inhibit since the Acom 1000
allows for that.

[Elecraft] K3 Rx SSB Filtering

2008-01-28 Thread G3SJJ
Not sure if I understand SSB filter settings. I have the standard 2.7KHz
flter roofing filter so I assumed the max bandwidth on the Width control
would be
2.7KHz but I find it goes up 6KHz. Since I am never likely to use that
kind of width, is it not possible to set the DSP to have a max bandwidth
coinciding to the
to 2.7KHz filter? In fact, I would be happy to have a max b/w of 2.3
since I am used to 2KHz Inrad in my FT1kMP anyway.

[Elecraft] K3 Receiver Performance

2008-01-27 Thread G3SJJ

A summary of what is to follow - Wow!!!

This radio was designed and advertised as a contesters radio and it
certainly meets all the requirements. Ergonomics are excellent, all the
necessary controls are well placed and what's more, work! I spent
sometime in CQWW 160 CW this weekend, not a competitive entry with 406
Qs, 27 States and 50 countries but enough to assess the K3 rx. The
general sound has already been compared to the Drake R4B sound. Yes.
Very comfortable to listen to. The AGC constants are perfect, at least
for me. The Width control coupled with Shift gives a very flexible
selectivity selection and the Noise Reduction really eases help my power
line noise problem.

This morning around sunrise when the band peaked it was great to hear
the W5s booming in, it was fantastic to be called during a run of
Europeans by W6XI in Arizona, but the crunch came in the last hour or so
at W2,3,4,8 sunset. The band was packed full of Eu, ranging from s7 to
40+over 9, and yet when I screw the width right down I can copy and work
Stateside. Now, these condx are very similar to say 40m in CQWW CW and
the K3 came through without a hitch.

This is real radio, real contesting with a real contester's K3.

Thanks Aptos !! Chris G3SJJ

[Elecraft] K3 278 up and running

2008-01-24 Thread G3SJJ
What a sweet dream! Everything extremely well packed and clearly marked.
Manual is very easy to follow. Build quality is excellent. The inventory
is well worth doing. I numbered the different screws down the side of
the manual page, separated them into different compartments of a couple
of pattie (muffin) tins and marked the compartments with a felt tipped
pen. That made selection much simpler.

I only encountered two small problems - Fitting the front panel unit to
the main board. With two pairs of connectors and not being able to see
one pair when watching the other, it was a bit of a juggling act and the
first try I didn't get it mated correctly, 2nd go was fine. I found
tightening the set-screws on the concentric knob fiddly.

First QSO was with N0SS on 20CW (K3), then YV1NX followed by W7QC (K3.)
The CW sidetone is really smooth and very pleasant to listen to, I felt
I could have sat at 35wpm all day. Tx power level very stable so setting
uo the Acom 1000 amp was quick and easy. Receiver sounds really good, I
haven't had time to evaluate it in tough condx. G to W7/0 is hardly
testing at present. 80m CW sounds good and the NR seems to help reducee
power line noise on my 70ft vertical. The one thing I really like is the
variable width control on receive.

I went for the K3 as I felt the K2 (which I sold last June) lacked was
good but lacked finesse. Well this has got all the things that I wanted
and more. I now need to integrate it into my SO2R system then I can do
direct comparisons with the FT1kMP. I hope to be active over this
weekend in CQWW 160CW, after which I will investigate SSB.

It has been along frustrating wait, not helped by poor communication,
unrealistic shipping dates, and also the constant harping and whining of
the those who think we should not complain. For me the Elecraft
experience has been tarnished by both of those aspects, and it will take
some time to recover. For now though I can savour the sweet K3!

I am a bit puzzled though. I have been investigating remote using HRD

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Request for some stats

2008-01-19 Thread G3SJJ
Doug, I might be able to slightly clarify soon! Received shipping
notification today of my 14 May with deposit order. I think things have
got fudged now but initially the 1st prodn run with deposit was to be
200 units. This was increased but supposedly ended on 14 May at 1800,
four hours after I placed my order. I have thought for some time that
250 would be the 1st run figure, but with 241 being a May 8 order I
guess that is blown. 260 maybe!

It seems to me that the idea of the 1st prodn run was to generate
interest and therefore income! I suspect having done that the idea of
discrete prodn runs will have been phased out as far as we are
concerned, again probably more of a revenue generating idea. I don't
think they will release figures of orders placed on their suppliers.

I am disparately frustrated about the 2nd Rx as the hype about this was
a major influencing factor in my decision to purchase. What I find
disturbing is all along the lack of cogent information and of course
paying $600 up front, 8 months ago, for no reason, and almost as
worrying, the number of people who defend this as being acceptable practice.

I am truly puzzled at the latest statement about the 2nd so close to its
published launch date. There is either a duff batch of populated 2nd rx
boards, maybe $50,000 worth or the problem was known a long while ago
and a decision made not to go ahead with ordering the boards, in which
case an announcement could have made much earlier. I don't go along with
the debacle theory but there is a strong smell of the mushroom
theory (kept in the dark and fed s---t!!)

I think the product is brilliant, the workforce is excellent, but the
communication is extremely weak and has really soured the situation. It
will be recovered but many people will now be much less confident when
they open their National Contest Journal and see a full page K3 advert!
It will certainly take me a long time to believe any future Elecraft
updates or press releases.

ESD mat at the ready, diary clear for when Mr UPS calls in a few days
time. Yippee

However, at this point:

1. Everybody will know the prod run size once we see orders going out

2. I am in Run #2 and I would like to get some idea (stress on

others who might share my thoughts) might be going out. I am not
asking you for an estimate, but I (meaning me, myself) would like to
make some basic assumptions (not entirely accurate) about when I might
expect my radio. I can't speak for others, but from what I've seen
posted, everybody is interested in every single scrap of information
available to help ease the frustration from the very long and
unexpected delays. My approach would be to take the number of ordered
radios divided by the empirical data of past shipments (average) per
week.

3. I am also in Run #3 (ordered my 2nd K3 on Nov 21), but I have
little confidence in my ability to project the real ship date for that
other than that the original estimate provided of mid February will
clearly not be accurate.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - relay noise

2008-01-16 Thread G3SJJ
That sounds similar K2 bandpass filter switching relay, noisier that I
would have thought but acceptable. The relays in my Dunestar 600 are
audible but quieter than the K2.

Chris G3SJJ

One thing I've noticed is the relay noise (physical, not RF) when switching
between bands. This appears to depend if I'm jumping about (noisier) or
moving up or down through them consecutively (quieter).

Only having used an FT-857 a lot in the past, where I don't notice it, I'm
noticing it on the K3.

I'm not complaining, I just need to get used to it.

This is also partially due to the way I use the rig during my working day.
I'm very fortunate in that I work from home and the shack is the office (or
is that the other way around :). So I leave the rig on, and running
MacLoggerDX, have it set to auto-tune the rig as DX spots come up. Sometimes
I hear a spot that I might be able to work etc. So, the K3 sits there,
clicking away and its something I hadn't noticed with the FT-857.

Wondering if this is common on K2s as well and if others have noticed this
in the K3?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 from 100W to QRP

2008-01-16 Thread G3SJJ
Maxim, I'm not sure why you need to go down to 3w. The K3 will sit at
120w for a long time. I don't need to use an ATU here as all my antennas
are fed with coax and remotely swiched, but I do have a manual tune amp.
I have a small printed card fixed with blue tack to the front panel
showing setting per band/mode. A bit like the old ad for Alpha amps,
Tuning By Numbers. 20m CW is 44 /36, so swopping bands is simple. Flick
the band change switch, quickly turn the two dials to those settings,
apply RF and do final fine tune. All done within a few seconds. The only
thing I have to watch is knock the power knob back on the MP to roughly
the area I know that gives me a reasonable ampount of power out of the
amp, say 30-50 watts. I would have thought this technique would have
been OK with the K3.

Chris G3SJJ

Well, when you wish to go from 100w, down to 3w, in order to tune an
external tuner (in my case an SGC auto-tuner), it can get tedious.

Maybe my interest to QRP is partially because K2.
I want to use my K3/100 still quite a lot in QRP and QRPP.
The degree of adjust is really fine down to 0.1W.
Also, 100W PA switch-off below 10W is very clever.
But to crank between 100 and 5W is not very handy.

I would like to see PF1 to change powers between two adjustable levels.

[Elecraft] Evolution of the K3

2008-01-12 Thread G3SJJ
Great to hear all the news and views of people's K3s. It is interesting
look back to the first announcement, specs and figures being released,
field testers reactions and comments, and now users' comments. The theme
all along has been of handling and performance expectations exceeded.
Now that shipment of orders placed up to 9 May has been made I am
waiting excitedly to hear from Aptos of the impending shipment of my K3,
ordered on 14 May. This will also mark the end of the first production.
Another milestone in the evolution of the K3. I will be watching my
inbox carefully over the next few days as I now assume shipment of
orders placed 10 to 14 May will be made during next week. For those
interested in these things, for serial numbers 100 to 200, I note an
average of around 15 units a week being shipped, so production is really
starting to ramp up, and my original thoughts about 1st prodn run volume
seems to be tracking well.

[Elecraft] K3 Serial numbers

2008-01-05 Thread G3SJJ
Looking for some clues on serial numbers. Last noted one is 178, yet K3
Wiki says first 200 units have been produced but doesn't say shipped.

I am planning some contests over the next two months which will involve
my K3. According to the latest info, orders received up to 9th May will
be shipped by end of next week, so I am thinking that 10-14th May orders
will be shipped by week ending 18 Jan. That would be perfect as my 14th
May should be with me by 25th and up and running, hopefully, to slot in
my SO2R system for weekend of 1/2/3 May. I sold my K2 back in June last
year in anticipation of K3 delivery in July and now just have the FT1kMP
so no SO2R capability. There is no great panic but without the K3 I
would probably ask the owner of a big contest station, so obviously the
sooner I can advise him to see if his domestic arrangements will allow
this the better.

Again early March sees another contest where SO2R is ideal. The rate is
painfully low, about 10 an hour for us in the UK, but mults are vital so
searching other bands becomes key to building a good score.

If shipping has gone out again it may even benefit me as I am consider
visiting states in mid-March, in which case I could have the K3
delivered to me there by some unsuspecting N0 or N6 (!!), and maybe I
could even partially assembly it so i don't bring the bog box back. VAT
saved would pay most of my air fare!

Not looking to antagonise the Stars and Stripes waving guys but I am
trying to do some realistic planning and tracking serial numbers is helpful.

extra functionality would be especially useful with the built in RTTY

With the K3 there are already 4 dedicated keyer buttons on the front

supported.
If this is ever done at some stage it could be enabled on a per serial #

I for one would gladly pay extra to have the full functionality of the

I didn't say contest loggers! Logger32 incorporates Winkey support. The
point I was making is that these days most people go for Winkey in one
way or another. Here I have the mHam Keyer which is built around WinKey
for its CW keying, and also the little WinKeyer USB for portable work.

From my recollection of my ETM9COG which I sold about 5 years ago and I
believe uses the Logikey chip, I was thinking that the setting choices
are limited compared to Winkey.

Whilst I am not really an F key pusher, prefering even in contests to
send from the paddle, I do like the idea of being able to setup the
keyer functions from a pc.

I just seems logical that the Keyer in the K3 maybe could do that,
either that or incorporate the various facilities that Winkey has. I
couldn't see the point in going backwards to older keyer designs.

Re: [Elecraft] RE: not about technical issues (was Shipping Status Page)

2007-12-07 Thread G3SJJ
Don, the long wait is not a problem, even though they have had $1372 of
my money for 7 months and not even a personal thank you or apology.

*The real problem is the constant lies and broken promises coming out of
Aptos, together with the lack of explanation, in fact, virtual silence*.

Those of us who placed early orders did so on the basis of the trust
built up between Elecraft and its customer base.

That trust has been severly damaged, not by the delays but by the
breakdown of communication.

Many of us had planned various activities involving our K3s. For me
initially it was a small Low Power Field Day in July, then it was IARU
Region SSB Field Day in September, then it was an SO2R effort in RSGB
21/28MHz Contest in October, then it was lending it to our G5W effort in
CQWW, and this weekend it was supposed to be a dual mode, multi op
effort in ARRL 10m contest. Each event was planned on the basis of what
proved to be mis-information from Aptos. Mid January sees an RSGB
contest that I have excelled in over the years. As early as May 14 this
year, when I placed my order for a K3/100 plus sub receiver, I began
planning for the 2008 event. Even at this this stage I cannot be sure of
having my K3, and only in the past week have I had to accept I won't
have the sub-rx. The way I found out was an un-announced change on the
shipping date.

Again going on the scant information, I have delayed arranging a
pre-Christmas trip out of the country to be around if or when my K3 is
delivered. I am still not sure whether it will be shipped. One person
was recently told that his order placed 6 July would be delivered by the
end of this year!! Numerous people have been told two weeks for several
times. The way I view it at the moment is that shipping came to a halt a
week ago, yet not a word.

This is not the efficient, honest and friendly service we have become to
expect from Elecraft. They have produced a really fantastic product and
our hearts go out to the team struggling to meet the rightful demand,
but lies and unbroken promises are not helping them or us.

Many years ago whilst in sales and marketing of thick film hybrid
modules into the defence industry I received a telephone call late one
evening from the manufacturing director of a very major defence
contractor. His modules were 3 weeks late and no warning or expalanation
had been given. If we had told him he could have re-scheduled. I was
given huge roasting and needless to say didn't sleep much that night. I
did however keep my customers well informed after that.

Some honest and realistic information would have prevented this email
and most of the preceeding ones

That means that Don Rasmussen's projections are overly pessimistic.
By my estimate (again judging only from the serial numbers accounted
for), serial number 225 should ship well before Christmas, and they
should have shipped SN 250 before the first of the year. I don't know
how many are in the 1st batch, but most have figured it is less than 250.

The folks at Aptos are working hard to hone their production
capabilities and get these first orders shipped. It has been a long
period of overtime for all of them. I will get my K3 in due time I am
certain, and I am certainly not going to bug them about it - whining
about it will not hurry the process and may even slow it down.

I'd like to make a general statement about deliveries, status updates,

First of all, I'm primarily focused on getting K3s out the door each
day and as a result I only read the list every second or third day, so
my replies to queries here can easily be delayed by that amount. Also,
when the email load on the list is especially heavy I go into scan
mode and do not read every mail.

Regarding shipping and status. - We are steadily ramping up our ship
rate. Its nowhere as high as I would like, but it is increasing each
week as we add staff and our subcontractors deliver assembled PC
boards at a better rate. We have all the fun issues surrounding a
significant ramp up of any new product - supplier glitches, assembly
errors, engineering changes, part tolerance variations, employee
training, exhaustion, over optimism etc. All of these contribute to
the variability in shipping estimates. Each week is a new experience.
Everything is converging in a nice manner, but in a manufacturing ramp
up you never know where your next wave of excitement will come from. :-)

Some of the confusion about status is generated as a result of
inaccurate postings from users here and elsewhere. Every time someone
says something in error about what order date we've shipped, how many
we have on backlog, etc., we get a flood of emails and phone calls to
Lisa and our sales team. When that happens it actually slows our
shipping rate significantly (since Lisa's crew generates all of the
daily shipping orders, each of which is custom for different options
etc. ). Also, with the huge level of calls they are not able to give
out accurate estimates on shipping for orders likely to go out past
the next two to three weeks.

There have been widely inaccurate estimates of how many K3s we have
sold. While it is not prudent for us to post exact numbers, for
competitive reasons, I can certainly say that we did -not- sell
700-1000 at Dayton, and that our backlog is not in the 3000+ range :-)
Based on our current backlog, as the current ramp up continues, we
will be caught up with existing orders received today by March.
Increasing our daily ship rate is my prime focus, but we will not let
quality supper in a rush to ship boxes out the door.

We are trying to be as accurate as possible with our shipping status,
that's why we have added the 'what order dates are shipping next'
section to our status page. We try to update it every 1-2 weeks as we
get a new block of K3s out the door. To be honest, that's the only
accurate statement about shipping we can make. Anything past that is
an educated guess and I can guarantee will be inaccurate. Since our
best guesses are triangulated, dissected and picked apart and second
guessed each time, its best not to go there. :-)

Lisa and her sales crew are a dedicated group who are working very,
very hard to both get new orders entered, enter the huge number of
change orders ( different / added options), answer the flood of daily
calls and emails and to drive shipping with what needs to go out
daily. I'm sure in the heat of the battle they have not been 100%
accurate when trying to estimate exactly when an order will ship for
orders shipping out past 2-3 weeks. They do their best, but they are
human too and when overloaded by calls they are certain to make
mistakes when estimating when an order will ship.

Several folks have asked why the shipping dates slipped for the FM
filter, 2nd RX, and DVR.

-- The FM filter delay is a pure function of our supplier. We asked
them to correct some design issues with the filter and they took
longer than we planned to do so. Those are now supposed to be resolved
and we are now awaiting delivery.

-- The delay on the 2nd RX and DVR are engineering resource related.
Wayne and Lyle have to release the final F/W for both of both of these
and also release the final PCB for the RX. They have spent much more
time supporting the existing K3 than we expected. If anyone know how
to clone engineers - we're interested! We have added additional
engineering talent, but for these two items Wayne and Lyle are the
experts.

Lastly, if you have a serious concern about our performance, our
veracity or anything else along these lines, you can always contact me
directly. The buck stops here. I can't always give everyone exactly
what they want to know etc, but I do my best. Our office number is

Re: [Elecraft] Separate list for K3

2007-12-05 Thread G3SJJ
I am desparately hoping to take delivery of my K3 before Christmas
(although now feel this is unlikely) but I agree with you both.

The list is now out of hand. Disappointingly this is mainly due to a
small group of established Elecrafters who believe they own the list and
can/should start and contribute to any discussion whether it is relevant
or not. Everytime I come back to my computer there are at least 30
irrelevant emails.

Not only am I totally frustrated with the lack of progress on my K3 and
I am now extremely disturbed at the lack of discipline on this
Reflector. I am seriously considering cancelling my order due to to the
combined effects of both.

Yes! I do completely agree, I would also like to see a separate list for
the K3. I am *not* interested in K3 at all, I have now only the K1, and
I do have serious plans to buy and build a K2, possibly during the late
end of 2008 .. so, for that reason I am only interested in reading
posts and getting information regarding the K1 and K2.

Today I am receiving the list in a digest, coming 2-4 times each day in
my mailbox, and 96% of the content is about K3, this is just too much
for me .. I have several times considered to send an unsubscribe message
to this list, but decided to bear and stay..

I am wondering if it might be appropriate to consider splitting the
Elecraft list into two lists: one for the K3 and one for all other
Elecraft offerings (K1, K2, KX1, mini-modules, etc.). Except
for perhaps transverters, which could have issues on both
lists, the division would be beneficial to the non-K3 users
who must now sift though the hundreds of K3 postings for
a few morsels of K2 or K1 notes.

[Elecraft] K3: Band Data (renamed)

2007-12-03 Thread G3SJJ

Oh dear, you have made me a little worried now Ian.

I use two Topten Band Decoders, with new source driver boards. Each one
has a cable wired for Yeasu, ie terminated in a Din plug which goes into
the Band Data out socket on the FT1kMP. One also has a twin screened
lead which picks up Amp Keying and Inhibit for my Acom 1000 amp. I am
not too worried about the Inhibit, as per recent discussions, I wired it
in since it was available and I use short time constant on switching.

I was just going to rewire one cable into the 15 way D connector to pick
up band data. I need 20mA switching capablity for the Acom so was
proposing to use normal phono to phono plus take 12v off the rear K3
connector. A bit messy compared with just a single Din connector on the
MP but now it seems I will need some other kind of interface as well.

Chris G3SJJ

Ian White GM3SEK wrote:
3. Reverse logic in the band data output. Again, this 4-bit encoding
was originated by Yaesu, and has since been adopted and extended by a
range of third-party providers. The standard band data output is TTL,
logic 1 = 5V, logic 0 = 0V.

The K3 uses industry-standard band encoding, but the output interface
is not standard. Use of open-drain pulldowns in the K3 means that
existing non-Elecraft band data interfaces will not work without some
modifications and a user-provided positive supply rail.

Whether or not any of those interface facilities is really needed is
a side issue. Those interfaces exist in the K3, so the relevant
discussion is about compatibility with users' existing stations.

At the technical level, these are all fairly trivial problems. My
holiday project was already going to be a breakout box for the 15-way
cable from the ACC connector, where the interfaces with several
different parts of the station can be patched in. The inverters and
level shifters that will be needed to give the K3 an industry-standard
interface to the outside world can go in there. It's just a little
more work than anyone would really have wanted.

2007-11-29 Thread G3SJJ
I have to say I am totally puzzled by this thread. You buy the K3 in
full knowledge that new versions of firmware will be available from time
to time and how they are accessed. You see the connectors in the rear
panel so you understand what is required. Fullstop/Period. No other
dicsussion required..

I would assume that most contesters will have a lap top with them for logging,

One could save the operator prefs on memory sticks and load them via a laptop

Uploading user prefs would be easy this way.

As for not having a computer connected to my main rig; That will never be the

to not have a computer connected. If I ever do any mobile HF work I plan to use
the K3 I have ordered for that, and it will be connected to a laptop.

Having said that I want you all to know that I have very fond memories of slowly
tuning the bands looking for other hams calling CQ back in the days before

Re: [Elecraft] Re: [Elecraft_K3] K3 Shipping Status Update 11/26/07

2007-11-27 Thread G3SJJ
The main problem Greg is inconsistency of information. The way I read
the latest update is :

w/c 26 Nov - shipping remaining orders received on 1 May
w/c 3 Dec - shipping orders received on 2 May
that seems fairly clear, we also know that that the first peak went on
to 3 May so it seems reasonable to say

w/c 10 Dec - shipping orders received up to 3 May
plus another peak on 7 May
w/c 17 Dec - shipping orders received on 7 May

There may be a big increase in output towards end of w/c 10 and 17 Dec
which will allow completion of the first production run. We know that
initially this run was to be 200 units and then extended (speculatively)
to around 250. Orders for this closed at 1800 14 May and anyone paying
their 50% deposit would be included in that run.

What is now confusing is that you are told that your order placed on 6
July will be shipped before Christmas. This is really strange given that
we know the above dates. It means that all orders received at Dayton
will be shipped before end of December, plus all orders for the rest of
May, plus all orders during June, plus all orders placed early July. I
really do find that difficult to believe.

With respect to the 50% deposit, we understood paying that placed you in
the first production run. If you didn't opt to pay then you would be in
the 2nd run. What I don't understand is how that still works. It seems
to me that a deposit should not be required after 14 May and if someone
does elect to pay then it would not guarantee moving up the queue. That
should be made clear.

I ordered and paid my deposit for a K3/100 plus 2nd rx and received
conformation at 1221 on 14 May so expect to be in the 1st run. I have
recently been hopeful of receiving it before Christmas but I am now not
sure since it would have to be shipped by 14 Dec at latest.

Shipping of the 2nd rx should commence Sunday 30 December, this hasn't
changed so I presume it is still on schedule. Again I have paid my 50%
so assume it will be in the first batch. My guess is that that not all
1st prodn orders included the 2nd rx so I might just get that in time
for RSGB AFS CW contest on 13 Jan, which would really be very useful as
I do SO2V in that event. The only problem I see is that I might have the
2nd rx but no K3 to put it in!!

As I said first off, it is the lack of consistent information that is
confusing and frustrating.

Oh come on now, David...there is no fiasco. The folks at Aptos are
doing a marvelous job. They've had to deal with things that just
happen when you have a complex production operation and are relying
on subs for contract parts/boards.

So the first K3's didn't come out on the original schedule...they have
communicated why that is true and are providing weekly updates of
revised schedules. The anxiety that is being created is caused more
by people on this reflector who are SPECULATING on what is happening
and whining about it. If you read updates you would know that if you
ordered in early May then your radio is likely to ship in the next
couple weeks...and if that changes, you will know why...Here's what
was said...

Shipping weeks of Nov 26-30 and Dec 3-7
(Orders with deposits):
We will be shipping the remaining 5/1 orders and many of the 5/2
orders during this period. (We still have at least a week to go on 5/1
orders due to the very short holiday week last week.)

We have been running a little slow on assembled K3s and are still
working on shipping a small number of these from 4/27-30 this week.
The shipping rate on these will pick up this week (week of 11/26) and
next.

The initial rush of orders was greatest 4/27-5/3, and also on 5/7.
After that group is shipped our movement through the backlog calendar
will pick up considerably. We're also adding staff (and overtime) in
production and test and hope to beat the above plan. We'll update it
here early each week.

How can you ask for more than that? If you have a specific question
regarding your order, ask them...don't talk about tarnished reputation
on a reflector.

I sent a note to Lisa yesterday evening asking if she expected
shipment of my radio before Christmas. Mine was ordered on July 6.
AT 8:02 PM Pacific time she replied...and said that if things go as
planned it should be shipped before the end of the year... Try
sending a note to one of the other manufacturers and see if you get a
reply from them at 8 p.m. Ha!

I also had not put down a deposit and told her that I would be happy
to do that if priority was being given to those who did provide the
deposit. She said a deposit would not change my place in line. I'm
absolutely delighted and astounded by the prompt response from some
obviously dedicated people. I've never owned an Elecraft radio before
but if it works as well as the customer service, I know I will be
happy. Patience, lad...if you didn't have the anticipation, you
wouldn't

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Deposit Clarification

2007-11-27 Thread G3SJJ
Thanks Eric, that confirms what I thought was intended. Hopefully then I
am in the first prodn run with deposit.

Not particularly interested in low serial numbers but wanted to get my
hands on the best contest radio ever which is why I opted to pay the
deposit for early delivery. The contests I had planned with the K3 in
July, September and October weren't so important although it would have
been a pleasant bonus, but Jan, Feb and March are very important for me,
so here's hoping!

A note regarding K3 deposits:

We originally gave our customers the option of getting a low a low
serial number K3 from our first production run by including an
optional deposit with their order. Once the first production run was
filled by orders (both those with and without deposits) we changed the
order form and stopped giving priority for deposits, but kept them
optional for those who wanted to help us out.

K3 orders received with a deposit before approximately May 14th will
ship before other orders received during that period. After those
first orders are shipped, we will ship the remaining orders in the
order they were received. (Deposits placed after this group are
optional and do not effect shipping date, but we do appreciate the
support!)

Seems to me we are around serial number 40, so just another 200 or so in

If a K3 takes 6 hours to assemble, plus final test and packing, I reckon

In reality, since I just got in at the end of the 1st run, I reckon mid

Don't you believe it, Chris. The first production run of special

Re: [Elecraft]US Postal Service Express Mail to the UK -Rubbish!

2007-10-29 Thread G3SJJ
... and my experience is that it isn't half as bad as all that. I
recently ordered two new source driver boards for my Top Ten band
decoders. Dave N3RD scanned the posting document and sent me a copy. It
was posted in PA on Saturday 13 October, sent by US Mail and arrived in
Nottingham on Wednesday 17th.

It seems to me that the major delay in incoming parcel post these days
is the emphasis on actually acting as a business. In the past the local
postperson was required to collect any payment due, so this was hit and
miss depending on whether the individual could be bothered, or whether
they considered they were working for a business or a community service.
Once RM realised just how much revenue they were losing they tightened
up their procedures and costs, hence the system now. So you really can't
fault that.

I guess you get what you pay for. I also recently ordered an Ethernet to
Serial adapter, for remote access to my G1000 rotor controller. It came
by UPS. Whilst the service was high class in that the UPS Depot at East
Midlands Airport rang me to say the item had arrived, they also stung me
for an excessive handling charge as well as import duty. (Would you like
to pay now, sir!) I would certainly prefer the Parcelforce £8 handling
charge and an additional day or so.

I can confirm Tom's comments regarding K3 CW keying. We had a QSO in
mid-August on 20m, exchanging 599 each way. The keying at around 30wpm
was excellent, punchy but without clix. Tom was able to vary the wave
form quickly. I recall that a setting slighly off the softest range was
best. Chris G3SJJ

heard! And

this from a number of folks whose opinions I value quite highly.

Elecraft (Wayne) had bent over backwards to ensure that there are NO
clicks or artifacts on the K3's keying! I think he's accomplished
this very admirably.

Re: [Elecraft] How do I unsubscribe?

2007-09-11 Thread G3SJJ
James, I can understand how you feel. If it wasn't for the fact that I
am expecting my K3 in the next few weeks I would certainly have
unsubscribed by now. I originally joined last year as I purchased a K2
at Dayton and wanted to keep abreast of technical aspects of this.
Having sold it to finance the K3 I am now interested in its development.

I am amazed at how much operating time people are prepared to devote to
trivial and irrelevant discussions. Typically recently a couple of us
raised the point about adding ACS to the K3 internal keyer. This is
something which has been available for over 20 years in K0II, Logikey,
and ETM and now K1EL designs, yet it generated a whole string of
negative comments then a history of el-keyers.

Finish. I am now concentrating on working for 3B7C on 160 for my 8th band.

it's been flawless for a long time now). This reflector is a great
resource for repairs, advice and seeking help but lately I have seen
more ratings, opinions and reviews of equipment which if I want to
see.. I'll go find it for myself. Someone suggested a while back
moving to a forum based system to ease the amount of email flowing in
the inbox and would allow you to go look at items that only interest
you (I have a K2 and some mini-modules..). I think it's a great idea
to move to a forum based system but that's only my opinion..and
opinions are like.. well you know the rest. I get far too many emails
a day and just find myself having to maintain my inbox by deleting all
the elecraft mails. Often if I don't check my mailbox for a few days I
find hundreds upon hundreds of elecraft emails to go through.
Unfortunately I still use crappy AOL for my email so I can't use it
with outlook that has nice sorting features. That would make deleting
the emails even easier (sorry, I just don't have time to go through

Re: [Elecraft] QSK and the 2nd receiver

2007-09-08 Thread G3SJJ

No Stewart, that is SO2R.

I use SO2V a lot here with the FT1kMP and that is what you will get with
the K3, but a lot better. With the MP you can only listen on the same
band because of the way the sub rx path is routed, although it is
possible on the higher bands The K3 has an independant sub rx so I
assuming you can listen on different bands.

Obviously when the radio goes into transmit the rx antennas are
disconnected. For SO2R here I have a WX0B Sixpak antenna switch at the
base of the tower, a pair of Topten band decoders and two Dunestar 600
bandpass filters in the shack, together with two separate 90m runs of
H100 coax and two 6 way screened cable runs. That's SO2R. It's ggod fun
Do a Google search on WX0B, Topten and SO2R for more info. I can't
actually do SO2R at present as I sold my K2, so egerly awaiting my K3
which I am sure will be Radio 1 in the system.

BTW, in the recent IARU SSB FD, we were using SR2O, otherwise known as
Big Knob Man and Little Knob Man. We used my GU8D-special (designed for
IOTA contest) SR2O unit for switching the mic, ie first one to hit the
footswitch grabs the tx. Good fun.

Re: [Elecraft] Extended Warranty

2007-07-09 Thread G3SJJ
Julian, I think Elecraft have realised they are into completely new ball
game with the K3. There are probably thousands of FT1k, FT2k, Kenwood,
Icom etc owners who will want to change to the K3, purely because it is
a better radio, but who will have no interest in any DIY aspect. They
will expect the kind of warranty and after-service they would get when
buying those radios.

I think the K2 brought in a step-change. Some of us newer owners found
satisfaction in building the kit first, but the ultimate reason was for
a better radio and there are a lot of owners who have purchased
pre-built/owned K2s purely for that purpose. The K3 then enables these
people to purchase a brand new radio and I suspect many will not want to
assemble it themselves, and therfroe will require warranty and service.

For me, I was impressed with the fact that the Voodoo Contesters, a
consistently leading CQWW CW contest group changed to K2s, and several
of the ops also use them for dexpeditions also, but haven't gone through
the loop of assembly it themselves. I saw one for the first time the
week before Dayton last year and purchased my K2/100/SSB/160 kit at
Dayton. I gained immense pleasure out of building it, but only had
slight pangs of sadness when the new owner collected it last week. I am
moving to K3 purely because I think it is even a better radio for my
purpose, ie multi and single op contesting on CW and SSB, low band dxing
and very occasional /P work. I am keeping my FT1kMP as the 2nd radio for
SO2R and MO contesting as I feel its is better ergonomically and ahs
better skirt slectivity with its Inrad roofing and IF filters.

I am linked in with a two part incentive scheme David.

Part A - I volunteered to decorate the lounge instead of getting an
outside contractor so that I could use the cash to finance the 2nd
payment on the K3 (1st payment from sale of K2)

Part B - Need to get the decorating complete and the loung re-assembled
about a week before delivery of K3 do that the novelty factor of new
rads, new hole in wall fire, new plastering, new colour walls and new
wooden floor still means I am loved by my wife! Timing is critical.

Re: [Elecraft] RE: Programmable mode/band Fwd: K3 suggestion for future release (read later)

2007-07-04 Thread G3SJJ
I don't think it is too much of a problem in the heat of a contest as
you can enter the frequency or mode into the the logging window. I
particuarly do this a lot in the FOC Marathon where it is commonplace to
move someone through all 6 bands in less than two minutes. He says Try
15m, you respond 21045 on the paddle and immediately type and enter
that. You're there. Complete the QSO and do the same for another band.

K3FAQ sez:

How do you change bands on the K3? Do you have to toggle through all
the bands to get to the desired one?

You can change bands in several ways:

- With the BAND UP and BAND DOWN buttons
- Using direct frequency entry; two methods:
   1. Enter a frequency in MHz and then a decimal point, e.g.
7. jumps to 7.000 MHz (40 meters)
   2. Enter a frequency in kHz and then a decimal point, e.g.
1825. jumps to 1.825 MHz (160 meters)
- Using general-purpose memories (100) for your favorite bands/modes,
including 5-character names that you assign to each memory)
- Using a computer program to control the radio

HOW ABOUT ADDING THIS:
When using the band up/down button, enable a feature that allows to
SKIP certain bands. I am thinking contesting. For example, to get
from 10 to 20, using the Band Up/Down would take 4 pushes. If you
know that you won't be on 12 and 17 (cuz it's a contest) and you could
disable them (or skip them, whatever you want to call it), then it
would only take 2 pushes of the Band Up/Down button.

Additionally, and even though it might be faster to go from 160 to
10 by pushing the UP button, during a contest, my brain doesn't
usually think that way and I go back DOWN through 80, 40, 30, 20, 17,
15, 12, finally to ten. It requires less thinking (believe it or
not), even though it clearly would take way more time.

While the 160 to 10 example is easy to figure out, but if I'm on 40
and want to get 10, I don't want to think about or remember what
is the fastest path. So just thinking higher band vs lower band
is simpler (at least for me).

As I really don't know how the memory function will work yet, this
might be moot. From your description, it sounds like pushing 7
decimal gets you to 7.000 instead of the last QRG you used. I assume
that using the Band Up/Down will get you back to your last QRG. Yes?
Also, I am pretty sure that you actually would be required to do at
least one more keystroke (FREQ ENT) to get into direct freq entry
mode, beyond simply tapping 7 then decimal point. I assume that
you have to terminate the sequence with another FREQ ENT, otherwise
how one enter a discrete frequency (say, 21066)? So if I counted
correctly (to just change bands using the keypad), you need at least 4
key strokes. Might as well use the Band Up/Down.

As I sed...for a future release, if you think there might be wider
appeal than just for me.

1 - Cancel the K3, buy K1. You do not need a K3 at this stage.
2 - Erect a simple doublet to cover the 4 bands.
3 - Make some contacts and decide then which band you like, based on
experience gained.

I have always had an interest in photography, but if I were starting out

[Elecraft] USB ports and things

2007-06-04 Thread G3SJJ
A couple of queries. I am currently setting up a new Dell Inspiron
Notebook with several intentions. a) - To use for logging at a second
station in my summer house (log cabin in the garden for non UK
Reflectees!) b) - To use on mini dxpeditions / contests elsewhere, c) -
To replace the current desktop machine in my main station and therefore
integrate with my SO2R set up. Radio 1 is FT1kMP and Radio 2 is
currently a K2, soon to be K3. (then Radio 1 will be K3 and Radio 2 will
be FT1kMP!!)

So here are my queries :

1 - The Dell has 4 USB ports but no serial ports. I recently bought a
Belkin wireless mouse and keyboard which uses 1 port for the wireless
adapter, that works well. I then added a Winkeyer2 USB Keyer to another
port and that also works. I then got more dearing and added a 2 Serial
to USB converter and that aslo works well with the K2. All very stable
and no inter-reaction. In fact I played in Field Day making 100 Qs and
then alter in PVRC Reunion, operating from thje summer house until
around midnight UTC. So, the K2 is set up as Comm Port 5, using one of
the pair of Serial connectors, if I plug my FT1kMP into the second one
which is set up as Comm 6, do you think there will be any inter-reaction
when using N1MM Contest Logger in SO2R mode?

2 - If all that works I would then want to connect up my Top Ten DX
Doubler for SO2R control, but this uses LPT for switching keying and
audio to/from the radios. I have been trying to find a true Parallel to
USB converter but have failed so far. I am really only interested in Pin
14 since I do not need things like Band Data as these are taken directly
from the MP or K3. Anyone know of a source of true LPT to USB convertors
or, if not, if Pin 14 is converter in the USB port?

3 - Whilst I am asking! My G1000 rotator control box is in the main
shack and has the Rotor EZ card for serial connection to my main PC. I
suspect this is a no-go other than re-routing cabling, but anyone know
if it is possible to control the rotator via Wireless network which is
already in place, from the Notebook? It's a bit of a bind having to go
up to the main shack to turn the beam!

Sorry for the length, I though I would get rid of this one one go!

Re: [Elecraft] USB ports and things - with corrections

2007-06-04 Thread G3SJJ
Many thanks Brian and Lyle. Been mulling this over whilst grass cutting!
OK, so no real Parallel to USB converter exists. For my purposes I just
need to know when using N1MM Contest Logger if whatever command is
normally sent to Pin 14 on LPT1 (maybe Low for Radio 1 and High for
Radio 2?) actually gets to the USB Port and is so if it then appears on
Pin 14 of the 25 way D socket which plugs in to the DX Doubler.

It also occurred to me that I should really have put this question on
the N1MM Reflector since many of the guys use SO2R and may have gone
through this loop, so apologies to the group for wasting your time.

What is really driving on this one is that if by some lucky chance my K3
arrived a few days before 28 July the IOTA Contest weekend I could
probably run SO2R!!

Exciting times!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news,

This is an interesting problem with a common thread. Much software has
been written to make [mis]use of various interfaces on standard
hardware. The use of a parallel port to control something is typical.

What we really need is a general purpose device that interfaces on the
network and may be easily addressed by software. In most systems
software has easy access to the network so it seems to me to make
sense to put our various bits of I/O into a bit of kit that speaks IP
and plugs into an ethernet.

Case in point, back in the early days of dial-up internetworking we
had problems attaching many serial ports to our systems. The solution
was to build a box (terminal server) that supported many serial ports
but could be addressed across a network. No reason not to take that
approach today.

As an example, Maxim (previously Dallas Semiconductor) makes the TINI,
a network-enabled interface-on-a-chip. Everything is on the one device
including ethernet, IP stack, serial, CAN, and bidirectional digital
I/O. It would be easy to build an interface box using this device and
use it to control the various components in your station. This is a
much more elegant solution than trying to force-fit USB devices.

I am not sure if it covers 6m but looking at the toroids I suspect so.
Not a full kit presumably because of the SMD components and the
associated situation as with the K3. I don't understand the argument
about Elecraft not marketing amps. The Company has the expertise and the
customer base with hundreds if not thousands of 100w amps being used.
These are very similar to the modules that would be in the KPA 800/1600
units. There was big interest at Dayton last year and I see these as
fulfilling several growing markets sectors. Firstly the users like
yourselves, secondly the guys who want a US legal limit amp and finally
like myself and others who want 2 amps for an SO2R or multi-op station.

No, I wasn't meaning that, Jim. I agree with your comments and I think
K3 then amps is a good marketing decision. As you say K3 volume should be
in excess of amps but also K3 owners will be more amenable to go for the
amps than K2 owners I suspect.

What I don't agree with are recent postings on the Reflector where users
are saying that Elecraft shouldn't market amps because it is a QRP kit
supplier.

I used follow business programs in the UK where initially Sir John
Harvey-Jones and then Sir Gerry Robinson went in to companies to look
and advice them on how to turn the business around if they were in
trouble or how to expand. I am sure both would have held Elecraft in
high esteem but would have disagreed with the idea of staying a QRP kit
supplier.

It's simply a matter of available resources, IMHO. It's clear to me
that Elecraft made the decision to delay the release of the amplifiers
until after the release of the K3, because they don't have the
resources to do both and provide adequate support for the entire

IOW, rather than release everything at once and reduce their standards
of customer service, they put K3 ahead of KPAxxx. Since they will
probably sell more K3s than KPAs, this makes perfect sense.

More than one company supplying the amateur market has gone belly-up

Elecraft isn't repeating that history.

I agree 100% with every comment you made, Doug. I purchased my
K2/100/160/SSB last year at Dayton and got immense pleasure and
satisfaction out of building it. Receive performance is good but I am
not convinced it is better than my FT1kMP with Inrad roofing filter and
2nd 3rd IF filters. I suspect the skirt selectivity tails off after
60db down which causes problems in close-in contest working. I think the
K2 is a fantastic rig for portable and dxpeditions but does lack some
refinement for high-end contesting.

I went for the K3 for exactly the same reasons as you. I am completely
confident that the design and manufacture will live up to the standard
we have all come to expect. For me, I am sure it will enhance the K2
performance plus provide those additional facilities I felt lacking,
plus more and more and more.

I don't think assembly down to SMD level on such a complex piece of
equipment is viable as Wayne points out, nor do I think it is necessary.
I certainly look forward to having some involvement on its final
assembly. I think the crew at Elecraft have done and continue to do a
magnificent job.

Now having said all that . I am wondering if I can put my money
where my mouth is!! At the end of July is the IOTA Contest, if I could
get hold of my K3 before then I would be willing to invest a further
$1000 for a trip to Guernsey and active GU8D (24 hr CW DXpedition
category) as the first contest operation for the K3. (GU8D appeared in
the top ten multi-op 1996 to 2005.)

While my soldering skills are excellent and I enjoy the building
process very much, SMD's are out of the question for me. In the case
of the K3, I save a few hundred $ doing the mechanical assembly -
which is great - glad that option is available.
However, I'm drawn to the K3 not for the kit-building experience, but
for its superb design and outstanding performance. This is my chance
to own a truly high-performance rig in a price range I can afford.

To me, the K2 and K3 are apples and oranges. If you want to build -
buy a K2. You will have a great kit-building experience and a great
rig when you're done. If you want a radio with high-performance - and
that is your purchase criteria - then the K3 is for you. And oh by
the way, you can save a few bucks if you do some of the mechanical
assembly work yourself. A bonus feature.

As I'm sure you've heard this over and over - great job on the K3.
Can't wait to get mine. I'm sure you guys feel a great deal of
gratification and satisfaction from all of the positive feedback. The
K3 may very well become the benchmark by which other rigs are measured.

We've had a few requests for a full K3 kit -- one where the builder
installs all of the parts, including the SMDs (surface mount
devices). Unfortunately this isn't practical for a project of this
complexity. I realize that many of our customers are quite capable of
doing SMD assembly, but many would have difficulty, too, since there
are hundreds of SMDs, many with very fine pitch leads.

In order to support a full kit, we'd have to stock and kit all of
the SMDs for a small percentage of builders. This would represent a
huge amount of added overhead, since at present the SMDs are shipped
directly from vendors to our assembly facility. In addition, we'd
need a lot of additional documentation and support staff to help with
SMD-related assembly, testing, troubleshooting and repair. I consider
myself a very capable SMD builder, but I occasionally mis-install a
part or leave a joint unsoldered, and troubleshooting such problems
can be very tedious even for the designer!

The other request has been for a version of the K3 where the builder
installs all the leaded parts. This, too, would create major
difficulties for a product like the K3. Even if we pre-installed the
SMDs, we wouldn't be able to fully test the PC boards if we didn't
also install the leaded parts, including connectors. Nodal testing
using custom fixtures for each board might get around this, but it
could take another year of engineering time to complete. And we'd
still have problems: a very expensive multilayer board with lots of
SMDs that was damaged during customer assembly would be a serious
liability both for us and the builder.

The modular, no-soldering K3 kit will, we hope, be attractive to both
our current customers and to new builders who would never have
attempted to build their own transceiver before. With our
encouragement (and yours), these new builders may go on to try their
hand at our full kits. We plan to continue to offer all of our
present kits and will add new ones in the future.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 and Linearamp UK 811

2007-05-16 Thread G3SJJ

Ian, yes it is as simple as that. Phono to phono cable.

Look at page 65 of the KPA100 manual, centre left, you will see J7 and
the switching transistor. The main thing is that the amp shouldn't
exceed the device's parameters, page 59. 200V DC and 1 amp.

Put your DVM across the amp phono socket and measure the open cct
voltage, I would guess between 30 and 100v, then put DVM into current
mode and measure closed cct current, again maybe around 70-100 mA.
(This will obviously switch the amp on.)

Off you go and work some DX!! Email me off list if you need more info.

KPA100 amp keying output, then just connect them together and run.

OK, well the amplifier instructions simply state that the phono socket
(on the 811), when earthed by the transceiver, puts the amplifier into
TX mode. The amp does have an ALC socket but I guess I can ignore that.
So my question is, when I key the KPA100 via the K2, will the key output
send a ground to the amp PTT input?

Sorry to sound so thick, I have not dealt with large amps before.

Something on the order of a small laptop keyboard in a housing.

I've walked the isles of a few computer departments scanning the

and looked at the reflector achieve for a solution. I saw that G3SJJ had
recently done a mod that involved adding a small board to hold the components.

I was almost about to go this route but found that this method of modification
would likely get in the way of the K2DSP board that sits above it. So here is
what I did.

a) I removed C33 and L1.
b) I soldered C33 (2.2uF) in the L1 position
c) I stuck L1 to the BACK of the PCB close to C33 pads with double sided tape
d) I soldered the (+) terminal of a 1uF capacitor to C33 (+) pad
e) The other leg of the 1uF is soldered to L1
f) The circuit is completed by soldering a 100 ohm from L1 to C33 ( -) pad

This way all components except the 2.2uF capacitor are now out of the way on the
back of the control PCB.

The improvement in sidetone quality achieved has been very noticeable.

Re: [Elecraft] sidetone mod now works

2007-03-09 Thread G3SJJ
I did the mod recently on my K2/100 serial 5545. It made a big
difference and now the sidetone is much more relaxing to listen to. I
didn't enjoy txing on the K2 before this. This is what I did :

1 - Remove L1 and C33

2 - Solder a 2.2uF in place of L1

3 - Cut a small piece of holed circuit board to 23mm x 10mm

4 - Mount L1, a 120 ohm resistor and a 0.68uF capacitor on the board

5 - Cut appropriate tracks so that a series network is formed

6 - Solder two lengths of bare solid wire 1.5cms long to the board,
coming out of the component side

7 - Solder the board into C33 holes, so that the components are facing
the control board.

This allows two things. One is that there is no track to cut and the
other is that you can adjust the components on the small board easily if
required

I check before and after using Spectrogram and the sidetone harmonics
have definitely been reduced.

My L1 82 mH inductor has a DC resistance of 62 ohms. This is quite different from the 180 ohm version used in the mod. Would a series resistor be desired as Fred indicates in the message below? I have 100 ohm, 120 ohm, and 150 ohm resistors on hand. Where is this resistor installed between U10 pin 7 and the inductor or between the inductor and C33? What type of capacitor would be best suited for this mod? My junk box only has 1 uF 100 V 5% metallized polyester or 2.2 uF 16 V 10% dipped tantalum capacitors. The polyester caps are rather large. A couple of the 2.2s in series would be 1.1 uF.

Darrell,

I did the TF3MA sidetone mod some months ago on my K2 serial #2198 and I am
very pleased with it. See my comments on
http://www.ac6rm.net/mailarchive/html/elecraft-list/2006-12/msg01043.html

where I wrote that This mod really works wonders with the sidetone quality
of the K2. I had done the sidetone upgrade to the 3000+ model previously,
but this latest change still was very worthwhile doing.

You should add series resistance to the inductor. If I understand your
question right, the order, L+R or R+L, doesn't make any difference. I would
try the 120 ohm resistor giving you a total of 120+62 = 182 ohms. Maybe the
size

I would probably have tried with the series combination of two 2.2 uF
tantalum capacitors in order to avoid putting the large 1 uF capacitor in
there.

That looks ideal, Bob, particularly for UK use where our licensed
