Re: [Elecraft] KPA 500

2020-04-10 Thread Irwin Darack
In my experience, coax connectors, barrel connectors, etc. are always fail
points when there is a sudden increase in SWR as power is increased. They
oxidize over time and sometimes just reconnecting or replacing is the first
step before taking the amp apart.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 - Advantage of min fan speed?

2019-09-30 Thread Irwin Darack
During CQWW RTTY this weekend I ran mine at level 3. Normally I keep it at
the NOR setting. When I was in the S mode the KPA500 stayed at this
level. When I was in Run mode the KPA500 would occasionally go to the
highest speed when working a pile up. My antennas are pretty much tuned and
I kept my output between 300 & 400 W.

[Elecraft] Low Tx Data Sound Output volume

2017-09-25 Thread Irwin Darack
I am not sure if this is a Windows 10 problem or something changes in my
K3s settings and want to see if others have experienced the same thing?

When the K3s is in Tx Data (PSK 31 and RTTY) - AFSK -A LSB, I now find that
the data output (sound) is no much lower than when just in LSB mode. This
seems to have occurred with the latest Windows 10 update. Hence in this
weekends CQWW RTTY contest, I could only use MMTTY with the K3s in LSB mode
and not Tx Data mode. I am not sure if it changed something with the Codec
driver or by some fluke, something changes in the K3s settings. Hence, I
ran the contest in LSB versus Tx Data.
Thanks,

[Elecraft] Dual -Watch and KRX3A sub-receiver install in a K3s

2017-05-12 Thread Irwin Darack
>From everyone's comments, I realize that to have dual watch ( listen to two
different frequency on the same band) on my K3s, I need to install the KRX3A
sub-receiver. I have two K3s that I have built, one with the KRX3A and the
second without. I am thinking of upgrading the second one with the
sub-receiver now.

To install a KRX3A in an already built K3s do I need to remove the front
panel? I am hoping that I do not as to reinstall the front panel you have
to be very careful not to bend a pin. I realize that I have to install some
new additional stand-offs on the main RF board. I have reviewed the KRX3A
install instructions and it's a little confusing on the difference in a
older K3 versus a K3s. It appears that you have to take the front panel
totally apart?

Looking forward to see everyone at Dayton (Xenia).

Thanks, Irwin KD3TB

Re: [Elecraft] Problem with N1MM+ ansd My K3 in ARRL RTTY Test

I had the same problem changing the K3s to FSK D verses AFSK A that I
normally use for RTTY whenever I clicked on a spot. Solved the problem by
telling N1MM+ to follow the radio setting.

Mike,

The code for the SPOT function is SWT42. I use it with my K3s in CW and CWT
function turned on. Also, I find that to work best, make sure your FINE
tuning shows all of the decimals in the LCD screen.

I hope this helps,

This sends VFO A to 20 Mhz:  FA0002000;MD5;FB0001500;BW0300;

Re: [Elecraft] SVGA/P3 Question -Waterfall Height Problem

2016-10-18 Thread Irwin Darack
P3 Firmware installed:
MCU = 1.60
SVGA=1.34
FPGA 0-4 = 1.04

I figured out the problem. When SVGA Data is turned on, the SVGA setting on
the P3 does not remember the SVGA P3 Waterfall Height. When SVGA is turned
off, it remembers the original SVGA Waterfall Height setting. This may
have something to do with that I have the TX Data window screen size at the
lowest level and only use the RX Data Window on the P3/SVGA to copy CW/RTTY.

[Elecraft] SVGA/P3 Question -Waterfall Height Problem

2016-10-17 Thread Irwin Darack
I have a P3 with the SVGA board installed + an external monitor.

SVGA Monitor Height = Main
P3 = 30

When ever I turn on the P3 (and monitor), I need to reset the Waterfall
Height. The Height is fine on the P3, but takes up 3/4 of the screen on
the external monitor. The P3 remembers the original Height setting. To
reset the Waterfall Height on the external monitor, I need to go to the P3
Waterfall Height, make any change in the Height value, and then the
Waterfall Height on the external monitor corrects itself. Not sure why the
External Monitor requires this and if it has something to do with the
P3 SVGA board or a monitor setting?

Thanks, Irwin KD3TB

Re: [Elecraft] k3s radio kit

2016-08-05 Thread Irwin Darack
I have build two this year. Each took a few days to complete, only spending
a few hours each day on the project. I took over the dining room table,
with my wife's permission, spread everything out and check the inventory
before starting. All parts, especially screws, washers and nuts were sorted
and placed in separate small glass bowls. Before installing a screw, I
double checked the length and size with a good ruler, etc. The instructions
are extremely well written and easy to follow. Just follow them closely
and always double check your work after each step. If you take your time,
are careful what you do, you really have the pleasure of building your own
radio.
Good luck,
Irwin, KD3TB

[Elecraft] K-Pod

2016-07-13 Thread Irwin Darack
My K-Pod arrived on Monday and I am currently working on building Macros.

When I tap the F1 function key on the K-Pod it reads macro 09 on the K3S;
when I hold the F1 key, it reads macro 01 on the K3S. All the the function
keys seem to behaving the same. For example, tapping F4 = macro 12, while
holding F4 = macro 04.

When I write a macro using either SWT (tap function) or SWH (hold function)
for the K3S, and write to the K3S using the K3 Utility, the macro runs
correctly on the K3S.

Its just the Tap and Hold on the K-Pod seem to be reversed? Should tapping
the F1 key on the K-Pod = macro 01 on the K3S, etc? Or was this how it was
designed? It seems to reversed from how the keys on the K3S and P3 behave.

Thanks, Irwin KD3TB

[Elecraft] K-Pod Questions

2016-07-12 Thread Irwin Darack
I just connected my K-Pod to my K3S and have two quick questions:

1. When connected to my computer, what is the name of the Human Interface
Device?
I have a device showing up as FT232R USB UART?

2. I have a K3S with 12 VDC output (1 amp max powered switched) that I am
already using to power my P3. The P3 has the SVG Video card that I use for
an external display. Before connecting the K-Pod I want to make sure that I
will not be drawing more than the 1 am max.

Thanks,Irwin KD3TB

[Elecraft] New K3S in the RTTY Contest

2016-02-14 Thread Irwin Darack
Ran a new K3S that I just built in the RTTY contest this weekend. Mostly
S with some minor runs. Kept the power to 70w. K3S fans never came on. If
they did, they were really quiet. Probably could have put the power
higher. Only the fan in my older P/S ocassionally came on. It was a good
way to break in the new radio and run it through its paces. Used the P3 to
find the stations and the CWT on the rig to fine tune them. Transmit
monitor let me keep an eye on my signal. Used a 400hz roofing filter to dig
out the close ones on a crowded band. Set the K3S to TX Data ( AFSK A -
LSB). For TX Data set the Mic Sel to Line in, no VOX. This let me use the
new USB Codec sound card and key the rig at the same time with N1MM+ and
MMTTY. Really pleased with the performance.

Re: [Elecraft] K3s pre-purchase question

2016-02-13 Thread Irwin Darack
Tom,

I just finished building my second K3S for my Beach House. The instructions
in the K3S assembly manual are excellent and very gratifying once you have
built it. Just take your time. I only dedicated 3 hours each day to make
sure I did not make any mistakes.

I would go simple to start with. Given your antennas, you really want the
100 watt option.
K3S - 100w Kit, Digital Voice Recorder, Auto Tuner, Filters - 400 Hz for
CW/ Digital, and 2.1 and standard 2.7 kHz for SSB. Unless you are really
into contesting, forget the second Receiver for now. You can always add it
later. That's all you need to get started.

I do not do much 2 meter operation, so I have not added that option.
Primarily I am on FM local repeaters. The same goes for the general
coverage option/filter.

Consider adding the P3 option in the future.

Good luck and enjoy the radio.

[Elecraft] RTTY No Audio into K3S

2016-02-12 Thread Irwin Darack
I am in the process of setting up a second K3S that I just built and having
difficulties setting up RTTY using MMTTY

Using the USB Codec, I can key the rig, receive Audio in and copy RTTY, but
no Audio from the computer to the radio.

I have the correct speaker in the computer selected (USB Audio Codec) . In
the Config menu I show KIO3B and set to nor.

What am I missing - Not sure what to try next?

[Elecraft] KPA500 in RTTY Contesting

2016-01-27 Thread Irwin Darack
I am curious to others experience with the KPA500 in a RTTY Contest. What
is the power level that others have used, fan levels and long term affect
on the power transistors?

I ask, as so far I have run the amp at no more than 300 watts with the fans
at there highest level. I do not want to harm the power transistors.

Thanks, Irwin KD3TB

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 finals blown

2016-01-21 Thread Irwin Darack
In discussions with Elecraft at Dayton, we should be able to run the KPA500
at 300 watts during a RTTY contest. This would include Running versus S/P.
The fans on mine do come on high and I keep an eye on the temp reading. I
do need to stop occasionally to allow the amp to cool down. I am not sure
if there is a way to add an addition external fan to increase the air flow?

[Elecraft] K3 Switching to 10W

2016-01-03 Thread Irwin Darack
In the RTTY contest, my K3 is turning off the 100W amp.

I set the FP Temp to 19C and the PA to Nor. I set the power to 60W output.
After contesting for a while, I would get a ERR=12V error and the rig would
shut off the 100W amp. The Circuit Breaker does not open. I switched out
Power Cords to make sure one did not develop a short? The K3 Fans would
occasionally turn on so I know the fans are working.

My first thoughts are my Astron Switching Power Supply was starting to give
me problems. Its over 10 years old and maybe it can not keep up.

To test that, I will need to wait until I can replace with another Power
Supply.

Any other suggestions on what to look for?

[Elecraft] K3 Fan Settings

2016-01-02 Thread Irwin Darack
How do I set the radio to turn on the fans when then 100 w amp temp gets to
a specific temperature. I am playing around with the RTTY contest -
running 70 watts output into a tuned antenna.

With KPA3 set to NOR, the fans do not seem to turn on, even when the 100W
amp gets to high. I know the fans are working because when I set KPA3 to FN
1 to 4, then fans run continuously at the appropriate speed.

PA temp is set to 27C. Should this be lower?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Fan Settings

Thanks. I will reset the PA Temp to a lower setting. I am finding that once
the PA temp gets to 27C, it shuts the 100w amp off and I only get 10W out

able to keep the temp down with the fans? I am wondering if I have
something set wrong?

[Elecraft] K3S Extenal Stereo Speakers

2015-10-14 Thread Irwin Darack
A speaker volume question.

My set up: I have a pair of Polk miniature (non powered) stereo speakers
plugged into my K3S. I plug my headphones into the front connector and
have the Config menu set up so that if the headphones are plugged in, no
sound comes from the stereo speakers.

I find that the volume in the headphones is much higher than the stereo
speakers when the AF audio is the same. I am wondering if there is a
setting in either the Menu or Config settings to equalize this or adjust
for the difference without having to constantly adjust the AF setting?

Finally, it could just be that I need to find a better set of stereo
speakers? any recommendations?

Thanks,

Irwin KD3TB

[Elecraft] KXPA100 Loosing Communications/ Turns PA Mode Off

2015-01-16 Thread Irwin Darack
I recently checked and upgraded all of the Firmware with my KX3 (MCU =
2.27, DSP = 1.3), KXPA (1.32) and PX3 (1.16) that was older.

I found that it lost communications from the KX3 to the KXPA100. Hence it
results in turning PA Mode Off. Even when I go back into the Menu settings,
turn PA Mode on again, It results in turning PA Mode back off again.

Even though I had full communications between the KX3 and KXPA100, to
resolve the problem, I had to going into the utility program for the PX3,
making sure it was communication with my computer, which it was, then
update the KX3 Menu PA Mode to on.

I am not sure where the glitch is occurring. I have the standard cable set
up as in the PX3 Manual and all data rates are set to 38400 baud. It seems
to be related to the PX3.

Is there a way to extend the time out for the KXPA100?

Thanks, Irwin

[Elecraft] KX3 and KXPA100 loosing connection

2014-11-16 Thread Irwin Darack
My KX3 and KXPA100 lost connection when I was changing one of the DVR's in
the KX3. This also happened when I recently updated the Firmware and I had
to reset the settings in the KX3.

During the ARRL SS Contest, I went to change Memory 2 and found that the
KX3 lost the connection to the KXPA100. The KX3 changed the PA Mode setting
from on to off? I had to reset them.

My station set up is the PX3, KX3 and KXPA100. This never happened before
during a contest and I am wondering if it has something to do how the
passing of information through the PX3 first and then to the KX3, KXPA100?

I have no problems with passing frequency information and macro's to key
the KX3 memories in the contest.

[Elecraft] KXPA100 Firmware upgrade

2014-11-14 Thread Irwin Darack
In preparation for the upcoming ARRL Sweepstakes, I checked the firmware
versions for my KX3, KXPA100 PX3. The only one that need to be upgraded
was the KXPA100. After doing this, the KX3 would no longer recognize the
KXPA100. I had to go back into the KX3 menu settings and reconfigure it for
the KXPA100?

This is the first time I have seen this happen, were the firmware upgrade
on the KXPA100 changes the settings in the KX3.

Must be the ghost of contesting past having fun with me!

2014-01-05 Thread Irwin Darack
I have been configuring HRD with my KX3 and wondering if anyone else has
done so?

I can get HRD to copy and send PSK31 and RTTY with the KX3 in Data A (rev)
mode. Although I can copy CW, HRD will not key the KX3 for CW

I have tried multiple setting in the KX3 and HRD.

Has anyone been able to get CW to work with HRD?

Thanks,

Great testimonial on Elecraft quality and the KPA500

I ran the KPA500 in the CQWW RTTY contest this weekend. With a drive
power of 15 to 20W from the K3, I kept the KPA500 output between 350 and
400W output. Even during runs (calling CQ), the temperature never went
above 65 degrees on the KAT500 meter. The cooling fan changed speeds as
needed and kept the amp with its tolerances. This was enough power to break
pile ups and get into Asia with no trouble. The interface between the
KAT500 and KPA500 was seem less allowing me to quickly move between bands.
Although not listed as a RTTY contesting amp, I was really impressed with
 the KPA500 performance.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 in Contest Conditions

2013-07-12 Thread Irwin Darack
We use the KPA500 and KAT500 combination at our VE2DXY contesting station
in zone 2 for CQWW SSB contest. The combination makes an excellent
contesting setup. I have also used in other CW, SSB RTTY contests and
very impressed with The performance. I really like its ability to rapidly
change bands with out having to tune an amp. Much different than my older
tube amp.

Hows the KPA-500 holding up under contest conditions for SSB and CW?

I've read the reviews on eham but there was only one that referenced
performance in contest conditions (and it was favorable).

I'm curious if the temp stays down and if power is lost as it heats up?

 Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500

2013-06-24 Thread Irwin Darack
I would be interested if Elecraft has any recommendations on their
experience. I have used the KPA500 in one RTTY Contest at around 350w. When
in a Run Mode (CQ'ing) the amp heats up pretty fast and the fan runs at a
high speed continuously.

PA TMP hovers between 65 and 70 C

I'm guessing would be fairly normal. I sure wouldn't run it that heavy on
 a 50%
duty-cycle operation (even if the factory says you can). I just don't like
running things hot. Mine hits full 747 turbine mode pretty easily.

Andy Ken,

What is your experience here?

As others have said, the mechanism the KAT500 uses to inhibit the
amplifier is the amplifier key line, sometimes labeled PTT. The KAT500
manual shows cabling diagrams that cause the K3 key line to go thru a relay
in the KAT50o to the amp. The amp doesn't change to standby, it is simply
not keyed and therefore does not amplify during ATU tuning operations.

Apparently this is not the case unless I have something set wrong. I

is this correct expectation or is there a

This is not a major problem as I have set up the KPA500 now

am still curious however if I missed something.

I can't figure out how to set the ACC2IO on the KX3 so that it will key
the KPA500 properly. I currently have the ACC2IO in the off position. When
I connect the cable between the ACC2IO and the PA Key on the back of the
KPA500 it puts the KPA500 in a transmit mode. I have to manually put the
KPA500 in standby to receive and then Operate to transmit. I have tried a
number of different settings on the KX3 and KPA500 with no success. What
 am
I doing wrong? (incidentally the KX3 will drive the KPA500 to almost 200
 watts output).

Just had to say - I had a blast with my K3 in this weekend's contest - I'm
not one to lead the pack, but surpassed my expectations and set a

out there and the K3 got a lot of respect running 100 watts (G5RV antenna).

All of the K3/P3 features got a good workout - I gained code speed and
 operating proficiency. Thank you Elecraft!
