[Elecraft] New Years Prediction
Howdy Gang. As the old year draws to a close and the New Year is upon us, let me be the first to propagate the rumor that Elecraft will announce at the 2021 Xenia Hamfest the introduction of the KX4. This highly portable SDR rig will have a 6 inch touch-screen/display, offer 160M-70cm range at 10W output, full QSK, internal tuner and battery. Additionally, it will have WI-FI, Bluetooth and Ethernet capability. Full duplex for Satellite ops, naturally, and all of the typical goodies you would expect in a portable Elecraft transceiver. Believe the above is enough to start a lively discussion of what we would want to see in the new KX4 (grin). I’m sure Wayne and Eric are already in the prototype stage of this new rig (grin) and it should become the rage of the Xenia Hamfest in 2021. Wishing everyone a safe, healthy and prosperous New Year. 73, Joe W2KJ I QRP, therefore I am __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] K4 Ethernet connection
Howdy Gang. Need someone with a bit of wireless experience to give me some assistance. Currently my Verizon home wireless phone router is not co-located in my shack. There is an Ethernet jack on the router that I’ve used to install new firmware in my Flex radios but I have to carry and power-up the Flex at the router location which is very inconvenient. If my K4 ever gets here (grin) I will need a wireless device that can receive WI-FI from my router and provide an Ethernet jack to hose up to the K4 in my shack. So, WI-FI to Ethernet device is needed. Does such an animal exist, if so, any recommended models to look for? Many thanks for any assistance. Re: [Elecraft] Prospective K4
Howdy Gang. I’ve built and owned Elecraft gear since 1999. Still have my KX3 and KX2. I bought a Flex 6600M rig and it was the best radio I’ve owned in years. But Flex messed with the firmware to where if you were in full QSK mode and used the internal ATU a loud relay would start clicking when sending CW characters, messing with the normally quiet QSK changeover from RX to TX. The reason given for this firmware change was that when the ATU was engaged in full QSK mode the receive signals would be 10db down as opposed to zero db loss without the tuner in line. To be honest I never noticed this problem but Flex, in all of their wisdom, made the disruptive change. IMHO this firmware change completely ruined a very FB CW rig. Perhaps the folks at Flex are not as CW-centric as the Elecraft folks. In terms of a K4 I would certainly love to see a beautiful 8” or large front panel display. This is the direction all modern radios are going….just look at the YaeCommWood offerings plus the Sun MB1 rig. While the P3 and PX3 displays are OK, a full 8” or larger hi-res display is breathtaking and extremely useful. So, why not a K4 with a big hi-res screen? I’m ready for it…make it happen!! 73, Joe W2KJ I QRP, therefore I aim > On May 5, 2019, at 11:16 AM, Rose wrote: > > Bert, > > Then why not just purchase the Flex? > > 73 ! > > K0PP > > On Sun, May 5, 2019, 09:11 Bert Craig wrote: > >> I'm in the comparison stage of planning my next, and likely final, HF rig >> purchase. [Elecraft] New tuning knob for the KX2
Howdy Gang. I love my KX2 but the main tuning knob has always been a problem for me. It’s just a tad too small and not easy to spin rapidly. I found a very nice aluminum knob for the KX2 being sold on eBay by a gentleman in Winterport,ME. The tracking item nr. is: 264113321673. The knob costs $24.95 shipped, is CNC machined aluminum and is black in color….not exactly cheap but worth every penny IMHO. I just put it on my KX2 and tuning is now a dream…it feels like a much larger knob and the finger dimple is larger than the stock KX2 knob which allows for a nice fit. It also fits the KX1 for all of the KX1 users out there. A very nice addition to my KX2. Now, if only Wayne can find a ball bearing rotary encoder for the KX2 all would be well in the world (grin). Re: [Elecraft] Compare: K3 to Collins S-line receiver
Howdy Gang. I recently sold my S-Line that had a 75S3C receiver in it and I’ve owned two K3’s and now a KX3 and KX2. I gotta admit that the tube audio was much more pleasant to listen to as compared to the solid state rigs. Can’t exactly say what the differences are but the tube audio sounded much “fuller and rounder” that the solid state gear. Re: [Elecraft] (Elecraft) Suggested key paddle for CW for the K3 and others (not expensive)
I've been using a CW Touch Keyer electronic paddle for a couple of years off and on now and have settled on it as my main paddle. Having had several high end paddles over the years, Morsetasten, WBL's and Begalis I can say that the CW Touch Keyer paddle works best for me. I like very close contact spacing...so in this case what can be better than no spacing at all!! Only the lightest touch is required to generate characters and the paddle is very stable on the desk. In my previous years as a government radio op I had to slap a bug around to generate CWnot any more since I started using iambic paddles 40 years ago. I recently purchased a CW Touch Keyer (P6) Mini-Paddle that I plan to use in the field with my KX3this paddle is extremely light so you need some way to keep it still at the operating position. I have a small brass plate designed for a small paddle that I will mount it on for stability...sure it adds some weight but not all that muchI operate portable a lot but I don't backpack at my age (grin). Will start by just using small pieces of double sided tape to mount the paddle to the small brass plate and see how that works. I was fortunate to be able to play with the Begali Adventurer paddle recently courtesy of my local Amateur buddy Bill, N2WG at our local Friday Ham Radio luncheons...it sure is sweet...but so is the price (grin). The CW Touch Keyer mini-paddle is a very low cost way to try a very light weight portable paddle in field ops. I'll send a report to the list on the overall operation of this tiny paddle after some field use. 73, Joe W2KJ I QRP, therefore I am __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

And so the wait goes on...can't believe they are still shipping based on orders received circa 28 Dec.hope the backlog diminishes rapidly...I'd like to be able to take my KX3 to the park before the weather turns cold (grin). 73, Joe W2KJ I QRP, therefore I am Joe, There is no grinding involved, just use the allen wrench supplied to loosen the VFO knob setscrews and adjust for more or less drag between the knob and the felt washer. The optical encoder is quite free-spinning, and if there is not enough friction, unexpected frequency changes can occur while with too much friction, tuning becomes cumbersome. The balance point in the middle is an individual decision, but I believe a totally free-wheeling encoder shaft will give you problem with unexpected frequency changes. In other words, put a bit of drag on it, but just how much is an individual decision - now that you know the pros and cons, accept the consequences of your decision point. This is *not* a problem to be fixed, it is an individual decision about how much drag should be on the VFO knob - as I have said, that is an individual decision. Use your best judgement. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/9/2012 8:56 PM, Joseph Trombino, Jr wrote: My take on this is that there will be probably more home/portable users of the KX3 than those using it mobile in a car...in any event why not make the degree of friction adjustable by the user? Not wanting to add to the noise on the definition of TBD, but I thought I would share my experience on this one. Re: [Elecraft] Portable Antennas (Is there an easy button?)
Howdy John: I use the PAR 40/20/10 for my field ops...I loaded this antenna up on 15M using the KAT2 tuner in my K2 and worked some DX with it. It loaded up easily and seemed to perform OK on 15Mso I guess it is possible. 73, Joe W2KJ I QRP, therefore I am Indeed AA5TB EHFA's web page was an eye opener for me. I've since studied the PAR (LNR) multi-band (40, 20 and 10) EFHW product with particular focus on the transformer box. http://www.hamradio.me/antennas/lnr-precision-ef-102040mkii-examination.html http://www.hamradio.me/antennas/lnr-precision-ef-102040mkii-test-data.html Of particular note are the resistance tests showing the wideband nature of the standalone matchbox to function from 60m to 10m with no tuning. This is not to imply, however, the matchbox/wire combo is multi-band. This clever little matchbox seems like an easy button. With that in mind, can anyone report what happens when the K2 (or any Elecraft) antenna tuner attempts to drive something like the LNR 40/20/10 matchbox/wire combo on some other frequency? Thanks. While I'm not looking for an ARRL Lab type of equipment review, I wonder if there are RX performance numbers for the KX3 that can be put out on the list. Given that the KX3 is probably going into production very soon I would assume these numbers would be available. [Elecraft] Field Day
Howdy Gang: I'm eagerly awaiting a report from Wayne N6KR on how the KX3 performed during Field Day. I took my K2 out to the field on Saturday for Field Day and used my PAR EFHW for 40/20/10M and made 30 QSO's in just over an hour. 10 meters was excellent for about an hour at 1900Z but didn't hear anything west of the Mississippi. I did manage to get a 579 report from Sao Paulo, Brazil during a QSO with a non-FD DX station. WX here in southeastern North Carolina was sunny and hot...93F with high humidity but it was tolerable compared to last year at this time. 20M was wall to wall full of signals and 40M was productive as well...15M had a bunch of signals too. I'm always amazed at how full the bands are during Field Day (especially the CW areas) and then how sparse it can be even on a normal weekend. Sure looking forward to using a new KX3 next year at Field Day. Here's hoping Wayne can give us a detailed report on the KX3's performance under crowded band conditions. Re: [Elecraft] (Elecraft) PAR ENDFEDZ antennas
I have used the PAR EFHW antennas for a couple of years now in my portable QRP work and they are very effective antennas. Currently using the PAR 40/20/10M version but also have the 20/40M version that I have used extensively as well. On one occasion in the field I had a 100ft wire up in a tree, the PAR 20/40 and a BuddiPole all set up and made comparative tests on the same signals. All were just about equal on both bands in terms of signal strengthsall antennas were oriented more or less in the same directions. The PAR EFHW antenna makes for the easiest and quickest installation of the above mentioned at least in my applications. You don't actually have to cut the wire when tuning the antenna for lowest SWR...I just doubled it back on itself and used tie wraps. I usually tape the matching box down to my operating table and run the wire up a tree limb using my wrist rocket. As I said, very easy installation procedure. The PAR EFHW antennas work very well for portable ops. 73, Joe W2KJ I QRP, therefore I am __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

My first shot with my wrist rocket went easily over a tree and my PAR 40/20/10m EFHW antenna was up in minutes. The bands were hoppingespecially European stations calling CQ FD...I guess this weekend is their Field Day??? Conditions on 15m were strange...my KAT2 tuner loaded the PAR up easily on 15m and I worked Ed, WiGUE in N.H. at the same time I was hearing Europeans coming in. I heard many beacons on 10M but no CW stations...a few sideband stations but that was it. I can't wait for the KX3 to come out...with the RX in it supposedly being better than the K2 but not as good as the K3 it sound like a sure winner for portable ops. 73, Joe W2KJ I QRP, therefore I am __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] What made you decide to purchase an Elecraft transceiver?
Howdy Gang: Might as well chime in with my .02 cents on the subject. I was working overseas in Cyprus when Elecraft offered up the K2 kit for sale back in 1999. I had been in QRP since my first homebrew Novice TX back in 1962 and over the years had built all the Heathkit HW QRP kits, OHR kits, etc plus homebrew gear. When I saw the specs on the kit I decided that it was the project for me. I had never heard of Elecraft before but I was familiar with the work of Wayne, N6KR going back to his Safari transceiver project that was printed in the October 1990 issue of QEX. I had to email the XYL back here in the States and have her place the order with Elecraft for the K2 with KAT2, KAF2 and SSB module. I'm sure she was thrilled doing that (grin). After building the K2 I was wondering if Elecraft would come out with anything else...sure enough out came the K1 followed by the KX1. Needless to say I just had to have one of each of those puppies so the building experience continued. I have to say that building Elecraft kits is highly addictive...I wound up building another K2, 4 K1's and 4 KX1's. I built them, operated them for a while, sold them and bought other Elecraft kitsthe cycle continuedlike I said, these kits are addictive. How many more K2's, K1's and KX1's will I build?? Let's see...how much time is left in life?? Did I forget to mention that I also built 2 K3's?? (grin). OK...so now I am waiting for the the K4, KX2, K1B or whatever else is in the workswith Elecraft you never know what's next. We are indeed fortunate to have such a wonderful U.S. company offering these products to us...QRP building has never been so good. So, melt solder, build and enjoy. 73, Joe W2KJ I QRP, therefore I am __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
