Re: [Elecraft] Lightning

2023-07-31 Thread Roy via Elecraft
My antenna is a broad-banded, low-Q, folded-fan vertical, low profile at
just 33 ft. tall on a city lot. It covers 160m thru 6m with just a few
components in its "tuner box" at feedpoint on the ground. Of course
everything is directly connected to Mother Earth ground, DC wise and RF
wise, which Hiram Percey referred to as 'plumber's delight.' It has 36
slightly buried radials and 38 ground rods in the back yard. Trees
around here are much taller. Utility grounds are tied in. I sleep fairly
well during storms.

[Elecraft] K4 Front Panel Phones Jack

2022-08-01 Thread Roy Morris, Jr. via Elecraft
When I plug my AKG K240 headphones into the front panel jack, my K4D produces
static when transmitting.  Removing the headphones plug, my transmitted audio
is normal.  If I use the rear jack with these same headphones, there is no
problem with my transmitted audio. The Elecraft K4 operating manual (rev 17,
March 10,2022) states some headphones will not work with the front panel phones
jack unless a resistor is added in parallel.  The front phones jack depends on
the transducer providing a resistance path to ground when inserted.I hope this
can be fixed in a future firmware update.  Roy Morris  W4WFB

[Elecraft] K4D Receiver Question

2022-07-02 Thread Roy Morris, Jr. via Elecraft
I find my receiver is very noisy.  I know this time of the year receiver noise
can be very high.  I have to use all 21 db of reduction from the PRE/ATTN
button and around 30 db reduction on the MRF encoder to get the radio quiet
enough to hear hear signals adequately on the 75, 40 and 20 meter bands on my
G5RV antenna.  I can significantly decrease the noise with the NR set to a high
level, but the signal is also degraded and reduced.  The receiver auto
attenuation is ON in the menu.  All AGC settings are set to factory default. I
am using the current R30 firmware, and all transmit and receive parameters
check out OK.  I would like to know if it is normal to have to use the MRF/SRF
encoder to get the noise down on the receivers. All of the pics I have seen
show the MRF/SRF set to zero (default). My K4D is equipped with the KAT4, KPA4
and 2 KSP4 speakers.  This is a wonderful radio, and I want to operate it
correctly.  I get good reports on my signal.  I have been told the CESSB
increases my audio by 8db and the bandpass skirts are sharp and clean. Thanks
for your thoughts on how I am operating this great radio.  Roy Morris  W4WFB

Check your idling current -- should be stable at about 2 amps.

73,  Roy  K6XK

Over the last couple of weeks, I have an intermittent problem with the amp.
On a number of occasions, I have received a LOW GAIN error message. The
output drops from 1400W to a few hundred watts or less as confirmed in the
logging file and my external power meter The problem can go away for a few
days and then return. Cycling the power has no effect, the intermittent may
or may not return almost immediately.

Has anybody experienced a similar problem?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 problem

2021-10-02 Thread Roy
Dick, during such episodes, what is the SWR meter on the amp reading?
Could amp be on the verge of protecting itself?

Roy  K6XK

Hi Guys,
My KPA-1500 is having an issue: with the internal ATU tuned "OFF" or in "ByPass" mode, when
transmitting the KPA-1500's relays occassionally chatter like a machine gun while transmitting.  It sounds just like
the relays do when the ATU is turned "ON" and it's tuning an antenna for minimum SWR.  Are there any KPA-1500
configuration settings that could cause this to occur even though the ATU is turned "OFF"?  Any ideas why
this is happening? Thanks!  Dick- K9OM

Relating to contact bounce, I wonder what the typical length of a bounce

Re: [Elecraft] K3 shortening CW dits

2020-12-06 Thread Roy

Increase the weight setting going into the K3 jack.

73,  Roy    K6XK

harp-eared operator at W3LPL told me that my CW keying sounded a little light
in the CQWW contest. I am using a Winkeyer, controlled by N1MM Logger,
connected to the KEY jack on the back of the K3.

An oscilloscope shows that the Winkeyer is producing a string of dits at the
proper 50% duty cycle. However, looking at the RF envelope of the K3 output,
the duty cycle is about 40%. Listening to the K3 on another receiver, the dit
shortening is quite noticeable. If I set CONFIG: CW QRQ = ON, the transmitted
dits are exactly 50% duty cycle. However I can’t live with the RIT, Split,
etc. restrictions with QRQ ON.

I have two K3’s, and they both behave the same way. Any ideas out there?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500/GainLow/Input Pwr

2020-10-19 Thread Roy

Frank,

Check the idling current: it should be 2 amps (keyed with no drive).

Gud luck, Roy   K6XK

My KPA1500 just started needing a lot more drive (2X) to get 'normal'
output.  I normally need 25-30 watts drive to get ~1k out.  Now I need
about 60W.  I get two kinds of alarms, depending on how I test the
situation, either a red "Gain Low' or a yellow 'Input Pwr'.  If I
drive with a steady 10w, I get a 'Gain Low'.  On cw, Just before
cutting out, I can drive the amp with ~65w, get ~600w out, then get
'InputPwr" followed by Gain Low' and the amp cuts out.

Time to go back to the factory?

Tnx, Frank W2YK

[Elecraft] Elecraft KPA500 LPF T/R Switch Rework Rev. E Mod

Re: [Elecraft] K3S AGC action in CW

2019-07-19 Thread Roy

Roger,

My K3s AGC works as expected -- goodluck.

73,   Roy   K6XK

Hi,

when operating the K3S in CW mode I found there is no difference in
switching between AGC-F(ast) and AGC-S(slow). It seems the "default" setting
is on slow and does not go to fast (compared to the decay characteristic in
SSB).
The manual explains that the AGC Fast/Slow response should also be effective
in CW.

Can anyone confirm this behavior (or not)?

Firmware version is 5.66 (actually supposed to be 5.67 with the "label" of
the previous version).

Re: [Elecraft] CW problem

2019-07-05 Thread Roy Koeppe
John, I think you may have won the Unique Problem Award with that one. Good
luck (sorry).

Roy K6XK

I am trying to run down a CW transmit problem on my K3s. Anytime I change
the mode from LSB or USB on any band to CW it starts to send a “dit” without
stopping and I have to halt it by restoring the configuration. This does fix
it until I try to switch to CW again; and then, the same story.

I recently removed a Kent (straight key plug) and the problem showed up. Any
ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] Fusing power cable on K3

2019-07-01 Thread Roy Koeppe
No, fuses have voltage drop both in their elements and contacts. Just what
you're trying to defeat and avoid.

73, RoyK6XK

I recently purchased a used K3 and am building a short power cord (after the
discussion of voltage drop from longer cables). I noticed that the power
cable that came with my IC7000 has fuses in both leads. Since the K3 has a
built in fuse it is still a good idea to put fuses in both sides of the new
power cable? It will be only used in the shack, not mobile.

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 Paddle question

2019-06-24 Thread Roy Koeppe

Ken,

I don't own a KX2, but perhaps tiny applications of one of the various
'threadlockers' on the market would be perfect. The thread lock comes in
small tubes and is available in several "strengths." Use only the lowest
strength -- the high strength can be virtually permanent!

73, Roy K6XK

-I’ve recently bought a KX2 and am enjoying it. I have an annoying
problem with the KX2 Paddle. The contacts continue to get loose. I have them
adjusted so that there is very little play. I set them up this way to keep
the mechanical clacking noise down and liked it so much that I changed my
other paddle for my shack radio to the same adjustment.

HOWEVER… on the KX2, after just a few minutes the paddles get loose again
and start clacking again. There is a separate set-screw (that was loose)
that I thought might make tighten onto the adjustment screw and keep it from
backing out. I’ve tightened them, but they don’t seem to affect the
adjustment screw’s ability to get loose. And, I don’t see these screws on
the exploded view I got with the KX2 or on the PDF on their website. I guess
a second question might be what do these screws do? One is visible on the
top of the right-hand paddle and one is on the bottom of the left-hand
paddle very near to the adjustment screws.

Thanks in advance,

-ken K4EES

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 Power Supply Fan Noise

2019-06-11 Thread Roy Koeppe
Eric -- this is not at all normal! My PSU is quiet...hardly hear it from
under the table. I understand Elecraft changed to much quieter fans maybe
two years ago. But even so, perhaps the voltage to your fans has soared way
to high? I haven't looked at the circuit driving them. Maybe lost
regulation, etc.

73, RoyK6XK

Apparently I was not clear enough in my message. It is the PSU fan noise
that is deafening, not the RF deck. Like Peter, my PSU sits on the floor
underneath a wooden operating desk that holds the rest of the K-line. The
noise from the PSU is high-pitched and piercing. The only thing I can
liken it to is a four-rotor Mazda prototype IMSA GTP race car from the
early 90s. Brain-piercing, tear-your-hair-out, heard-from-every
room-in-the-house louder than hell, and has been so since the day it
darkened my doorway--with the RF deck at idle.

correspond perfectly with the digital display also now.

Scott, again if you have missed it, Elecraft has an 'ATU update Kit' for

SN 0178: With FW 1.64, the flashing SWR LED problem seems to be gone.
On 10 meters, the display no longer goes half blank, but some extraneous
characters show up when transmitting, but it returns to normal on
receive. A big improvement, though perhaps eventually a bypass capacitor
might be necessary.

Hi Don,

I hear nothing at all from my supply there or anywhere else so far. My power
supply is under the table on a low stand, so is less than 3 feet from the
K3s. Just FYI, but it seems I would hear something.

73,Roy K6XK Iowa

I just received my new KPA1500 last Thursday. Ser. No. 316. I ordered
it in Visalia on April 20.

Tested it out on all bands and I am a very happy camper. I decided to
place the power supply about 8 inches to the left of my K3 on a small shelf.

I discovered that on 15 M, 21.020, I get a major switching power supply
noise. The noise level as seen on my P3 goes up to S3.

Has anyone else seen this? All the other bands are OK. I gave the amp
a very good test during the IARU contest. Temp never got above 74 C. Fan
comes on at 60. I received it with 01.63 firmware.

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] new owner looking for fuses.

2018-07-15 Thread Roy Koeppe
One reason 'all fuses' aren't just rated at 250v to be done with it is that
a shorter element section in a lower voltage fuse can have a lower
resistance, due to the shorter arc gap allowed. Thus lower voltage drop for
a low voltage circuit, etc.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 fan noises

About-

"Take care in the application of added cooling efforts"

Yes, but the proof is in the pudding; watching LEDs display the amp's temp,
the readings are always cooler with the aux fans running. One reason is that
between transmissions they continue running and reset the temp back to near
ambient room temp instead of around 50C where the stock fans shut off. My
operating is QSK rag-chewing, breaking back forth in round tables. Fans do
remain off then nearly always. P.S...my 4.5-inch, 48-volt muffins cost a
whopping $1.86 each! Guess no one wants 48V. If bearings wear out, so what.

I have a complete K line with the KPA 500 currently. I am considering

limit*, while operating as a "run" station in a RTTY contest? That would be
near continuous duty. How loud are the fans when operating in this mode?

Thank you in advance for any information.

Yes. and the ultimate is placing them remotely in the closet with a clothes
dryer hose leading to that plenum sitting at the back air intake coupling.
Care must be taken so as not to ever restrict air intake to the internal
fans when they're running at max speed.

Yes, they do...which is also opposite of airflow in K3s. The idea of the
additional fans is that they are much more quiet than the built ins, even
when they are on speed #1 . And they prevent the built ins from running so
much or not at all. Simpleminded, I admit.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 fan speeds and fan noise

2018-05-21 Thread Roy Koeppe
Yes it does, normally air flow is from rear to top. The fans placed over the
exhaust vent on top create a partial vacuum, drawing in air through the idle
(or running) fans on the rear apron and out the top just like when the
regular fans are doing that job.

RoyK6XK

"That doesn't move any air across the heat sink or solid state devices that
need the air. The air that comes out of those vents starts at the fans in
the rear."

After having played with mine extensively last night, I was under the
impression that the fans would come on automatically when the temp reached a
certain degree. That is not the case. Mine was defaulted at fan speed zero,
which is fans off. You have to change the menu item for fans to one of your
liking. I had read a few postshere on the reflector about 2 being an
acceptable number. I agree.

"When running the KPA1500 at full power, sometimes the power will fluctuate.
EXAMPLE: I was checking in to the Elecraft SSB net a little while ago. While
transmitting, the power dropped to around 400W. This has happened on 20M CW
as well. I wonder if the K3S output is dropping. (??).

If I run at 500W or so, no problem."

Re: [Elecraft] OK, odd question

2018-02-14 Thread Roy Koeppe
It is the "custom" for CW mode to use LSB on the bands below 20 meters and
CW USB on 20 meters and the bands above it.

Hiram Percey decided that long ago.

73, Roy K6XK

I for one like the tuning direction of the Elecraft rigs in CW (LSB).
When I began ham radio using much older receivers, I liked listening
with the BFO set to LSB. My perception was "If the pitch goes up, I am
tuning to a higher frequency". Those receivers did not have very good
frequency resolution and it helped me in tuning correctly.

I realize that is my preference, others like it the other way around.
It is easy to set the Elecraft gear to CW reverse, and that is "sticky",
so you only have to change it once for each band.

It is a designer's choice, so I guess Wayne agrees with me because he
made LSB CW the default.

[Elecraft] Clever K3s cooling scheme?

2017-05-24 Thread Roy Koeppe
Re all the fans postings, it appears my K3s uses convection cooling during
light usage periods, drawing air in at the rear, backwards thru the idle

One leg of a horizontal antenna has to, unfortunately, run parallel to the
power lines at the back of a city lot. Will there be more pickup of
electrical noise if that leg has a current maximum, or a current minimum on
it, along the portion of the antenna closest to the power lines?
