My antenna is a broad-banded, low-Q, folded-fan vertical, low profile at just 33 ft. tall on a city lot. It covers 160m thru 6m with just a few components in its "tuner box" at feedpoint on the ground. Of course everything is directly connected to Mother Earth ground, DC wise and RF wise, which Hiram Percey referred to as 'plumber's delight.' It has 36 slightly buried radials and 38 ground rods in the back yard. Trees around here are much taller. Utility grounds are tied in. When I plug my AKG K240 headphones into the front panel jack, my K4D produces static when transmitting. Removing the headphones plug, my transmitted audio is normal. [Elecraft] K4D Receiver Question
I find my receiver is very noisy. I know this time of the year receiver noise can be very high. I have to use all 21 db of reduction from the PRE/ATTN button and around 30 db reduction on the MRF encoder to get the radio quiet enough to hear hear signals adequately on the 75, 40 and 20 meter bands on my G5RV antenna. I can significantly decrease the noise with the NR set to a high level, but the signal is also degraded and reduced. The receiver auto attenuation is ON in the menu. All AGC settings are set to factory default. I am using the current R30 firmware, and all transmit and receive parameters check out OK. I would like to know if it is normal to have to use the MRF/SRF encoder to get the noise down on the receivers. All of the pics I have seen show the MRF/SRF set to zero (default). My K4D is equipped with the KAT4, KPA4 and 2 KSP4 speakers. This is a wonderful radio, and I want to operate it correctly. I get good reports on my signal. Re: [Elecraft] KX2 Paddle question
Ken, I don't own a KX2, but perhaps tiny applications of one of the various 'threadlockers' on the market would be perfect. The thread lock comes in small tubes and is available in several "strengths." Use only the lowest strength -- the high strength can be virtually permanent! 73, Roy K6XK -I’ve recently bought a KX2 and am enjoying it. I have an annoying problem with the KX2 Paddle. The contacts continue to get loose. I have them adjusted so that there is very little play. I set them up this way to keep the mechanical clacking noise down and liked it so much that I changed my other paddle for my shack radio to the same adjustment. HOWEVER… on the KX2, after just a few minutes the paddles get loose again and start clacking again. There is a separate set-screw (that was loose) that I thought might make tighten onto the adjustment screw and keep it from backing out. I’ve tightened them, but they don’t seem to affect the adjustment screw’s ability to get loose. And, I don’t see these screws on the exploded view I got with the KX2 or on the PDF on their website. I guess a second question might be what do these screws do? One is visible on the top of the right-hand paddle and one is on the bottom of the left-hand paddle very near to the adjustment screws. Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 Power Supply Fan Noise
Eric -- this is not at all normal! My PSU is quiet...hardly hear it from under the table. I understand Elecraft changed to much quieter fans maybe two years ago. But even so, perhaps the voltage to your fans has soared way to high? I haven't looked at the circuit driving them. Maybe lost regulation, etc. 73, RoyK6XK Apparently I was not clear enough in my message. It is the PSU fan noise that is deafening, not the RF deck. Like Peter, my PSU sits on the floor underneath a wooden operating desk that holds the rest of the K-line. The noise from the PSU is high-pitched and piercing. The only thing I can liken it to is a four-rotor Mazda prototype IMSA GTP race car from the early 90s. Brain-piercing, tear-your-hair-out, heard-from-every room-in-the-house louder than hell, and has been so since the day it darkened my doorway--with the RF deck at idle. 73 Eric WD6DBM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

One reason 'all fuses' aren't just rated at 250v to be done with it is that a shorter element section in a lower voltage fuse can have a lower resistance, due to the shorter arc gap allowed. Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 fan noises
About- "Take care in the application of added cooling efforts" Yes, but the proof is in the pudding; watching LEDs display the amp's temp, the readings are always cooler with the aux fans running. One reason is that between transmissions they continue running and reset the temp back to near ambient room temp instead of around 50C where the stock fans shut off. My operating is QSK rag-chewing, breaking back forth in round tables. Fans do remain off then nearly always. P.S...my 4.5-inch, 48-volt muffins cost a whopping $1.86 each! Guess no one wants 48V. "The benefit to putting fans in back blowing through the stock screen/fans is that you get the slight added benefit of over-pressuring the chassis which tends to keep the chassis interior cleaner. Assuming adequate rear spacing, you can hide the fans a bit more" Yes. and the ultimate is placing them remotely in the closet with a clothes dryer hose leading to that plenum sitting at the back air intake coupling. Care must be taken so as not to ever restrict air intake to the internal fans when they're running at max speed. "Do the KPA1500 fans push air into the box? If so, why doesn't the KPA500 fan do that. If the KPA1500 fans pull out of the box why would it be appropriate to use an additional fan that opposes this airflow?" Yes, they do...which is also opposite of airflow in K3s. The idea of the additional fans is that they are much more quiet than the built ins, even when they are on speed #1 . And they prevent the built ins from running so much or not at all. Simpleminded, I admit. Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 fan speeds and fan noise
Yes it does, normally air flow is from rear to top. The fans placed over the exhaust vent on top create a partial vacuum, drawing in air through the idle (or running) fans on the rear apron and out the top just like when the regular fans are doing that job. RoyK6XK "That doesn't move any air across the heat sink or solid state devices that need the air. The air that comes out of those vents starts at the fans in the rear." Bill, default setting is fan "0" -- then they remain off until needed as amp heats up with use. All automatically. So you hear no noise while you're just listening to receiver, etc. RoyK6XKIowa After having played with mine extensively last night, I was under the impression that the fans would come on automatically when the temp reached a certain degree. That is not the case. Re: [Elecraft] OK, odd question
It is the "custom" for CW mode to use LSB on the bands below 20 meters and CW USB on 20 meters and the bands above it. Hiram Percey decided that long ago. 73, Roy K6XK I for one like the tuning direction of the Elecraft rigs in CW (LSB). When I began ham radio using much older receivers, I liked listening with the BFO set to LSB. My perception was "If the pitch goes up, I am tuning to a higher frequency". Those receivers did not have very good frequency resolution and it helped me in tuning correctly. I realize that is my preference, others like it the other way around. It is easy to set the Elecraft gear to CW reverse, and that is "sticky", so you only have to change it once for each band. It is a designer's choice, so I guess Wayne agrees with me because he made LSB CW the default. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
