[Elecraft] Check your rig (was KAT-500 + KPA-500 / SWR Thresholds)

2024-01-02 Thread Tom N4LSJ
*I know your issue is resolved* but this MIGHT help some people using an
IC7300 with the KAT.

I had a "kinda" similar problem where the ATU would always tune if I
changed bands.  I had programmed the computer to send the new freq, then
a "memory tune" to the tuner if I switched bands, so I could always
"instant QSY" but it turns out there was a setting on the RIG that was
telling rig to activate the tuner to tune every time I QSYed more than a
certain amount.  It was called "PTT Start" and was turned "ON" which
means if frequency moves more than 1% then tune next time PTT is
pushed.  It took lots of frustration to finally find this issue.  After
turning that off, the KAT happily memory tunes to the frequency I send
it and I can call a station with no tuning.

Thanks. That's good detail. I'll recheck the manual once more. I made a
common mistake of assuming too much and not reading enough. I have tremendous

That's a long way of saying, It works brilliantly.

I just want to avoid a mistake in where the ATU-500 and KPA-500 are trying to
resolve a tune whilst the CW spews forth.

This comment and the prior comment about the Kenwood aspect (and related
command-set mentioned) are interesting. Thanks.

Aside from all that -- when folks here use the "SWR Thresholds" and use the
K3+KAT+KPA chain via Aux Serial data sharing -- what do you use for the three metrics in
SWR Thresholds?

There's a KPA Inhibit SWR, Re-tune SWR and Bypass SWR value. The recommended
values in the manuals seem frightfully high for my nerves to handle.

Any advice on *that* would be welcomed.

HNY, Thanks.

AFAICR the manual says that if an AUX cable is connected between the KAT500 and
the radio, the KAT500 will follow any frequency/band change and if a tuning
solution has already been stored for that frequency/band it will be employed
before the radio goes into TX. In other words, whilst the radio is still in RX
mode.

However, elsewhere in the manual it says that when the KAT500 receives RF, it
will also pickup the nearest tuning solution, which is a fail-safe action in
case the KAT500 does not receive data from the radio, for any reason.

This is only if the radio is a K3, K3S or K4 and if a KPA500 is in use, RF from
it is sent to the KAT500 but the AUX cable must be connected AFTER the KAT500.
i.e. K3———KAT500———KPA500.

I make no comment about using the KAT500 with a Kenwood (or other) rig.

What KAT500 mode (AUTO, MAN, BYP) is selected when you observe this anomaly?

W7BRS> Per manual for KAT-500/KPA-500 the stated "nominal" mode is MAN. So I leave
the KAT-500 in MAN after tuning the antenna to 1.1."

Your problem sounded a bit like the conflict between serial data frequency and RF count
when operating near a "bin" boundary. However, my only experience with that
problem is with Kenwood rigs using serial data to provide frequency to KAT500. I have no
experience with AUXBus.

For Kenwood owners one solution was to use the FDT command to desensitize the
RF counter so serial data frequency always had priority. The command
description implies it is equally applicable to AUXBus so may be worth
experimenting.

"FDT Frequency Counter Distance for Retune
GET format: FDT;
SET/RESPONSE format: FDT nn; where nn is the distance, in kHz, between the
current ATU frequency and the most recent TX frequency count for the ATU to
change ATU settings to the new frequency. The value is between 0 (interpreted
as the default of 10 kHz) thru 65535, which disables ATU tuning based on
frequency count. This is intended for customers that prefer the KAT500 only
follow the frequency provided by a serial port command or the K3/K3S/K4 AUXBUS,
or select a minimum distance between current ATU frequency and a newly counted
frequency.
FDT was introduced in firmware version 01.99."

The KAT500 will interrupt the amp properly.  Radio key line goes to KAT,

[Elecraft] Lightning "protection"

2023-07-29 Thread Tom & Barb Valosin
Essentially, your antenna is a lightning rod. Lightning rods don't
"attract" lightning. The dissipate the charge differential between the
cloud and earth before the charge builds sufficiently to provide a path
for a "leader" charge from earth to the cloud. When a "leader" is
established, the "full charge" of a lightning strike develops. All this
assumes a properly installed system. If you are actually utilizing a
lightning rod system, it must be properly installed. This means solidly
done interconnections between rods and a properly installed heavy wire
ground. To further provide some protection, 8 foot ground rods should be
installed about every 10 feet around the perimeter of the building.
These rods should be bonded together. Ideally, one would use copper
strapping about an inch in width. That is expensive. Another possibility
is the heavy wire used by welders. The perimeter ground should be
connected to the buildings electrical service ground. Then, there should
be a minimum 8 foot long ground rod connected with that welding wire to
each leg of the tower. At guy wire anchors, ground the guy, again with 8
foot rods. Now, bond each guy-point to one another, to the tower and to
the perimeter ground at the structure housing the shack. Yes, it is a
lot of work. This is the type of installation used at the 55KW TV
station at which I was engineer many moons ago. 750 foot tower. The
safest place in a thunderstorm was in the transmitter building. The
properly installed system provided a "cone of protection" for a distance
of 750 feet around the base of the tower. Much of this info was provided
by an outfit called Lincole (if I recall the company name correctly) in
a 2 day seminar that all the station engineers had to attend. Tom, WB2KLD

Exactly what happened to me: the strike came in on the cable line, took out
the TV, the cable modem, the router, the computer hard-wired to the router

Turned out when the cable was brought into the house many years ago the
installer failed to adequately ground at the entry point

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 gain variation with serial number

2023-07-26 Thread Tom N4LSJ
Mine was bought new in the Summer of 2022 and on most bands it needs
watts to be in the mid to upper 30s to get the 500 out.

I have been told that the gain of the KPA500 has increased over the years it has been produced.
"Early" KPA500 are reported to need 35-39 W to produce 500 W out. "Later"
KPA500 are reported to need only 20-25 W for full output. The difference in gain has been
attributed to difference in the PA transistors as well as component changes in the LPF.

I'm interested in knowing where my KPA500 serial number falls in the spread of
required drive power. I would like to receive data from KPA500 owners so I can
get an idea of what gain can be associated with a serial number range. To
minimize the spread of data I'd like to specify 20 m band, non reactive 50 ohm
load, key down CW mode. It would be preferable for drive power and output
power to be measured with the same instrument but I'll take what I can get. If
a KAT500 or other tuner is in circuit it should be in Bypass mode.

Requested data:

Serial number; frequency; drive power; output power (target 500 W); PA voltage
(front panel HV); PA current (front panel CUR); power measurement instrument(s).

Only one data point for 20 m band is requested but additional data won't be
discarded. I'll collate any data and share it if here is any interest.

Thanks and 73,

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Also faulting for High SWR inappropriately

2023-01-04 Thread Tom N4LSJ
I got a KPA500 this summer and it was doing a lot of faulting.  I had to
"correct" a few things that were just fine at 100 watts.

1: I discovered that a solder joint in the UNUN had gone bad, and fixed
that.  That solved most of the faults.
2: With still the occasional fault, I looked again and discovered there
was a spot on one of the windings in my UNUN that had been scraped free
of enamel.  I applied insulation.
3: After several months of great operation, my receiver had started to
"cut out" after transmitting.  At first, I thought my rig was going
kaput, but it was an inline SO-239 barrell that had gotten heated up
because of no longer being a tight fit. Replacing that cured it.

Moral: It's almost always the antenna system, somewhere.

On 12/30/22 15:20, Jack Brindle via Elecraft wrote:

Amazingly, it is probably not the KPA500.

We have been seeing quite a few inquiries about this. Analysis almost always
shows an issue in the antenna system caused by high power.

There are a few things at play. When measuring SWR (or better, antenna S
parameters) at low power, you will get the results of the low power
measurements. These are usually quite good for determine antenna
characteristics and generally tell you almost everything going on with the
antenna. They do not tell you how the antenna handles high power.

Antenna system components, including the feed line , connectors, wire and so
forth, are designed to handle some level of power before they will fail in some
way.
As an example, spacing of the windings in loading coils matters. Too small, and
the coil will arc at high power. The same is true with connectors, center
insulators and the like. Many antennas have matching boxes at their feed point
to properly match the feed line to the antenna. These have a rating, and many
are amazingly low.
One popular (and very good) commercial dipole antenna is rated for 1000 watts
ICAS. The specifications later state that the antenna should not exceed 500
watts on CW. This is especially important when running digital modes such as
FT8 which keep power applied to the antenna for long periods of time. As power
is applied, the components will heat and will eventually fail. When they fail,
probably not catastrophically, they will change the matching characteristics,
and the amplifier will see a very high reflected power that will cause it to
protect itself. When the user inspects the components (with power off), they
will probably not see a problem - unless the component failed catastrophically,
it will have cooled by then. The problem will repeat itself, of course. No
measurement taken with an antenna analyzer or VNA will show the problem,
because they work at very low power levels.

When you select an antenna, the ratings must be taken into consideration.
Manufacturers like to hide the power ratings (especially those with built-in
matching systems) in order to get more sales. If you want to run high power,
don’t use a miniature beam - they need lots of matching and are almost always
designed to run at low power. The same is true for compromise wire antennas and
those that require matching networks at their feed point. Also watch for
compromise connectors and adapters. Right-angle UHF adapters are notorious for
arcing. You can’t see it because it is inside the connector, but that arcing is
probably the cause of a PA Dissipation fault in the amplifier. Make sure
connections are tight - hand tight is not good enough. Use the best connectors
you can get. The industry standard is Amphenol - they have very high quality
standards.

In short, make sure the antenna system you are using is designed to handle high
power for doing periods of time. If not, it will fail, and when you inspect it
you will wonder why.

Jack, W6FB

1.2:1 and a Daiwa bridge showing 1.1:1 into the antenna. It's the same on a
dummy load.

I don't understand Bob McGraw's logic as if it does require power, my Daiwa is
gonna see it. If I measure the feedline, lightning protection and antenna with
a network analyzer I will be doing it with mili Watts.

Cheers,

Marv

[Elecraft] KPA-500 timing settings IC-7300

2022-07-26 Thread Tom N4LSJ
I've been on the internet and can find IC-7300 TX Delay, CW Rise Time
settings for other amplifiers pretty easily.  There don't appear to be
any for -specifically- the IC-7300 and KPA-500.  Are there "officially
sanctioned" settings for that combination?  I feel it may be overkill to
use 30ms when 10ms TX delay may suffice.  Is there also a suggested CW
rise time from Elecraft?

The KPA-500 also has a "TR TIME" settings from 0 to 50 as well. Does
that need to be set for the 7300?

I -DO- have a KAT-500 and the whole get-up is hooked as per the
documentation on Elecraft's FTP site, e.g. the key line going to the
tuner, then the amp.  That document says nothing regarding timing.

73 to all!

Re: [Elecraft] Stacking KPA on KAT

2022-07-23 Thread Tom N4LSJ
I just built my power combo this last week.  The stand-offs inside the
KAT-500 are designed specifically for supporting the weight of the
KPA-500.  It's fine!

Like Jim, I've had my KPA on top for years. No heat issues because the KPA

Also, with all of the cables attached to the KAT500 I find it is better
having the KAT on the bottom so the cables lay flat on the table rather
than all of them arching over the back of the KPA amp.

I had something similar happen, and it was the capacitor in the EFHW

Hello All,

I am selling my K2/100 and KAT100 at Dayton.  I don't want to ship
this.  I bought this from an estate a few years ago and really haven't
done anything with it.   It has options KSB2, KPA100, K160M, KDSP2,
K60XV, KAT100, and an MH2 mic.  The serial number is in the 6k range.  I
am asking $850 for the package.  I will be in space 7736.

Re: [Elecraft] On ground - in ground radials

2022-01-16 Thread Tom & Barb Valosin
Now in my mid seventies I have embraced the idea of conservation of
energy. Digging in radials does not interest me. Likewise, catching them
in lawn equipment is also a PIA. So, here is what I have done and it has
worked well. I trim the grass.  Then I use a length of string and
stretch it out along the path of the future radial. Next I take a
"weed-wacker" and shorten the grass a bit more. Now I use any old
available can of spray paint and spray a few marks along the length of
the string. Remember to roll up the string now - no longer needed. Then
I take my radial wire, make the connection at the antenna base and
stretch the wire out along the marked path. Depending of the
levelness/evenness of the surface I then take a nail and make one wrap
of the radial around the nail, tighten the wire so it is straight with
no loops and insert the nail into the dirt. Do this along the length of
the radial. Typically I do it about every 10 to 15 feet. In a couple of
days the grass grows and the wire is so low (deeply embedded) in the
grass that mowing will not be an issue. The entire radial system need
not be done at one time and it is easy to add radials if you wish. HINT
- get a grandchild to help, or a neighborhood youngster or a person
working toward their license or one of the younger club members or .
anyone but yourself. Remember however to compensate them for their time
and effort!

Waxing about old ham lore, a "Strays" item on page 132 of the December
1946 QST has W6KA repeating advice from W3LPY and W1MJH that
"Simonizing" 300 ohm line (or using floor wax) will "eliminate the
impedance change during rainy weather."

Paul, N6LL - current Trustee of W6KA

p.s.- That would be the impedance presented to the transmitter which
changes, not the characteristic impedance of the line.

Based on my measurements and method I used to measure 100 ft of window

antenna, will have a small effect on the impedance at the station end
of the line.

I really think and believe many comments and opinions regarding window
line, are more "old ham lore" not based on true and complete facts.

[Elecraft] KAT3 ATU Problem

trouble, but ifthe TX power is ramping up slowly, then I cansee where the

controlalgorithm is looking at change direction (maybechange magnitude as
well) in SWR to decidewhich relays to flip next. The relative
adaptationspeed of the control algorithm and the TX powerramp-up could
certainly cause interactions thatmight slow the ATU convergence, but I

ramp-up?73,Mike, K8CN >*

Mike,
Thanks for that and I do understand what you say about the possibilty of
the control algorithm getting confused by the slow ramp up of power. Last
week Rob at Elecraft Support had me using a 50 ohm dummy load with the KAT3
bypassed. Set PWR to 5.0 W and hold down XMIT to TUNE, this performs a Tx
gain calibration. Then set to 11.9 W and TUNE again. My results were 5W
immediately but rising from 8.4 to 9.8 W in about 6 seconds

Rob then had me checking WMTR LP setting in CONFIG menu (TECH MD ON). This
was set to the default value of 70 which he suggested I increase . (I'm not
at all sure what this is doing). Increasing this value to the maximum of
180 gave me 10 W increasing to 12.0 W in 2 seconds, faster but still quite
a delay.

This does happen on every TUNE button press but I don't have any problem
during my daily use of the rig on CW. I have not fired up my old Tektronix
scope yet to look at the keying envelope.

Elecraft Support have gone quiet this week so no further progress.

73 and thanks for your help,

[Elecraft] KAT3 ATU Problem

2021-12-11 Thread Tom Boucher
Mike (K8CN) and others - thanks for your inputs. I'm talking to Paul at
Elecraft Tech Support who, by the way, is being most helpful.

He reckons I have a problem with the Low Power Amplifier which takes a few
seconds to come up to full output power. I'm not at all sure how that
affects the SWR measurement and ATU setting, but I'm going to follow along
with his advice and see where it gets me!

Then perhaps I'll start looking in detail at the SWR bridge components.

The rig has a 100 W pa and second Rx Mike.

Tom G3OLB

*Tom,*

*I'm going to go out on a limb here, but hey,*
*it's only a virtual limb!*

*I am going to withdraw my previous statement*
*that the K3 SWR bridge is operating correctly.*
*Given what you've said, the ATU control algorithm*
*is receiving bad information from the SWR bridge.*

*Here's how to test this hypothesis:*

*-- use a different resistive load than 50 ohms, e.g. two*
*50 ohm loads in parallel using a tee-junction,*
*or build a higher resistance load using*
*several non-inductive power resistors, or*
*use a 4:1 balun reversed to present a 200 ohm*
*load to the ATU when balun terminated in 50 ohms.*

*-- put the KAT3 ATU in 'bypass' mode*

*-- measure SWR at low TX power (whatever*
*power the ATU uses automatically is fine*

[Elecraft] K3 ATU Problem

2021-12-08 Thread Tom Boucher
*You can set TUN PWR in the K3 Config Menu to something other than 5
watts.73,DrewAF2Z*

Drew,
Page 60 of K3 Owner's Manual states: "TUN PWR Note 1: *TUN PWR* does not
pertain to *ATU TUNE, *which always uses 5 or 10 W and is internally
controlled"

Does anyone know how to change the 'internal control' to increase from 5 W
to 10 W?

Thanks David - yes I've tried that, but it still ends up with a poor

corner, tightened up the 3 LPA screws underneath. It's very strange!

[Elecraft] K3 Auto ATU Problem

2021-12-07 Thread Tom Boucher
Thanks NK7Z, NK7I and K8CN for responses.

Dave and Rick indicated that running the K3 at a higher power level during
the ATU Tune sequence might solve the problem however, as far as I can see,
the power level is fixed at 5 watts during auto tune and cannot be altered.

Mike, there is no problem with the Ant 1 and Ant 2 ports and manual
selection of L & C works OK. The ATU just won't end up with the right
settings for lowest SWR. The problem has not always existed.

[Elecraft] K3 Auto ATU Problem

2021-12-02 Thread Tom Boucher
I'm wondering if someone can help with a KAT3 ATU problem on my K3
S/No.01434?

When bypassed, the K3 SWR indication agrees with that on an external SWR
meter. This is also so when the KAT3 is replaced with a KANT3 board. When
in AUTO mode it goes through its relay rattling sequence for each band, but
ends up with a mis-match as indicated by the K3 meter.

For example, with a 50 ohm load, in BYPASS the K3 indicates 1.0:1 SWR on
all bands as it should. When in AUTO mode the indicated SWR is anything up
to 4.4:1.

I have tried a different KAT3 with the same results. I have also re-loaded
the firmware (version 05.67/2.88/2.88/1.26).

Thanks in advance.

[Elecraft] Win4K4Suite is now available

2021-10-28 Thread Tom
I am pleased to announce the release of Win4K4Suite. This release requires
K4 firmware, beta R25 or higher. Many thanks to Kevin Rowett and Brandon
Hansen who helped make this happen!
For those of you who have used Win4K3Suite, you will find a familiar
experience with almost all the same functionality only limited by the
current K4 firmware.
Win4K4Suite is a comprehensive control and integration platform for the
Elecraft K4. One of its key features is the ability to run up to 6
applications simultaneously over a single serial port or the K4 Ethernet
connection. While the radio itself allows such sharing with its 3 serial
ports and its Ethernet connection, Win4K4 will allow applications that do
not have ethernet capability to run remotely using the built in virtual
radios. This includes WSJT-X, DXLab, HRD Logbook, and pretty well all third
party products.

In the first release of Win4K4 the following features are available:

-Full control of the radio presented in a large and "mini" format
-Support for USB connections and Ethernet
-Access to commonly used menu items
-Club Log profile applied to your favorite cluster
-CW - FSK - PSK terminal with logging to your favorite logger
-6 virtual radios that allow you to run other 3rd party software or hardware
products simultaneously. They work even with Win4K4 over a network
-Macros
-Shortwave Database based on the EiBi Database
-Audio Oscilloscope
-Audio Spectrum Scope
-Support for the SDRPlay RSP devices

With the current firmware in the K4 the following features are not yet
available:
-Frequency Memories: Not yet available in the K4 firmware
-Native K4 spectrum output: Not yet available in the K4 firmware
-Ethernet connectivity of the KPA1500.
All these features will come as the firmware matures.

Here is a picture of some of the functionality:
https://va2fsq.com/wp-content/uploads/k4-large.jpg

The software has a 30 day trial. You can download it here: va2fsq.com

In my case my DX-20 had not yet been on the air when the neighbor across

[Elecraft] A new release of Win4K3Suite is available

2021-08-13 Thread Tom
Hello,
There is a new version of Win4K3Suite available. This release has some
fixes for wrong spectral offsets when used with an SDRPlay.
Win4K3Suite is a full featured control program for the K3/S, KX3 and KX2.
It has a built in Panadapter that works with LPPAN and a sound card, as well
as the SDRPlay RSP's. It supports the KAT500, KPA500/1500 and the KXPA100 on
most of the above radios.
A unique feature is that is has 6 built in Virtual Radios, each of which
works just like an Elecraft radio. This allows sharing of a single COM port
with up to 6 applications. This feature is fully managed and you will not
have conflicts with other applications. It also has a built in HRDLogbook
server and the EiBi Shortwave database.
There are many more features like full access to menu items, a cluster
display using your ClubLog credentials and many more.
You see more information here:
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=win4k3suite
and download a fully functional 30 day trial at va2fsq.com

[Elecraft] Frequency shifts of KX3 when selecting CW?

2021-07-26 Thread Tom
Hi
I don't recall this happening before, but if I am tuned to a signal lets say
at 1.000 MHz in AM and then I switch to CW, the frequency display on the
radio changes to 1.600 MHz.
My K3 and KX2 do not do this. Is there a setting somewhere?
I did drop my KX3 at one point recently so I am wondering if a button or
worse was pressed.
Thanks, Tom

Take a very good look at the current KPA500 manual for more information, and

You will need an RS232 crossover  cable between the ANAN 7000 and the
KPA500.   In the 7000 software you have to use a CAT+ control and
connect the RS232 cable to the XCVR
connector on the KPA500.    I don't know how to connect the KAT500 to
the 7000.

If you are looking for true, all 15 wires run independently cables, look
at the HD-15 male-female cables by Winford:

Their breakout connectors are great for wiring up other projects. When I
had one of my K3's at a remote base, I used one of their breakout
connectors on the HD-15 jack so I could easily get at the band decode pins.

For years I used a Radiosport headset with my K3. Worked like a champ. Since I
received my K4 I noticed annoying RFI-induced feedback on the Radiosport when

I have an external meter on each of my antenna feedlines so I know the
actual SWR for each antenna. Also see a difference in the reported power
out on my (still) K3 versus the power reported on the external SWR/PWR
meter which is to be expected given the line impeadance for my antennas
is not 50 Ohms resistive. Will likely pick up a vector power/SWR meter
to get a better view of my antennas.

Re: [Elecraft] Not Able to hear CW

2021-05-20 Thread Tom
I just dialed up a local beacon. With it producing about a 1 kHz tone in
the tx data mode, I switched the mode on my k3 to CW. the tone dropped
down by 600 hz, which is the CW offset/sidetone point I have in my K3.
If you hear it on the tx data mode, and you move to CW, adjust the vfo
+/- 600-700 hz, and I'm sure you will hear it. The radio is just
shifting the offset.

[Elecraft] Funny K4 Story

2021-05-16 Thread Tom Doligalski via Elecraft
Last week Monday I received K4 SN0110. The Brown Truck came at about 2 PM.

That morning I had checked into an 80M net using my trusty K3. For 8)M is use
an inverted V. All was well.

Monday afternoon was a frenzy of setting up and using the new K4. Pretty easy
setup.

All week long I used the K4. All was good, but I was disappointed at signal
strengths on 80M. I kept thinking that the K4 just couldn’t receive well on 80M!

Yesterday I was out in the back doing yard work. That’s when I noticed that the
support ropes on BOTH ends of the 80M inverted V had failed, and the the
antenna was lying on the ground!

We had had a storm come through here Monday mid-day, and my supposition is that
the support ropes had failed. I restored the support ropes, and low and below
the K4 works well on 80M again!

I normally would have noticed the change in SWR, and realized that I had an
antenna problem. But, of course, I had tuned the K4 for the first time on 80M
when I received it!

A learning moment (operator error?). Gonna try to check the antennas out a bit
more frequently!

Re: [Elecraft] OT: High school drafting class, ~1975

2021-04-27 Thread Tom Azlin W7SUA

Have a slice of a core memory module here. ... somewhere.

Of course took drafting and electronics in high school as well as wood shop.

First computer I used was an IBM 1130. Learned how to build a machine
language initial boot card where the 12 hole positions in a column could
give me 80 short instructions from which I could build a few 16 bit
instructions and yank in the remainder of the cards in the stack. And
program by hand with the front panel switches. But also rewrote the
keyboard and rotate/tilt code for the Selectric printer as interrupt
driven.

Much easier these days.

Now to the computers, how many of you youngsters out there remember core

IN 1978, when I started at Public Service Company of Indiana (PSI), the local

[Elecraft] Kpa500 not playing with my IC-7600

2021-03-27 Thread Tom Ewing via Elecraft

Good day, and thanks for reading.

My newly acquired KPA500 doesn’t want to play with my IC-7600.

In operate mode when I key the radio, the LEDs on the KPA500 display solid into
the yellow, and there is no output. The amp is not faulting.

I’m using an Icom 7 pin DIN cable (two actually from two different vendors) and
tried two different radios, both IC-7600s with the same result.

In the KPA menus, I have set the “radio” option to “analog”.

Am I missing something else?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Elecraft] Suggested Enhancement for KPA-1500

2021-03-12 Thread Tom

Dr. William,
In your case I would recommend that you have a spare fan or two. I
retired two years ago from full time radio broadcast engineering.
Technology has really changed everything. But starting 10 years ago, I
ordered spare fans for every critical item in the broadcast chain. other
engineers in town though i was nuts, but i was the one they called when
they lost a fan. (Markup was usually lunch!). A typical Nautel
transmitter today may have 30+ fans in it. Fans and power supplies. 90%
of broadcast equipment failure is the power supply. I have a KPA-500,
and I am not worried about its power supply. But those wall warts and
even the cheap inside power supplies today are the reason i still get
paid to be on call for stations. But for your piece of mind, I would
have a set of fans on hand.

[Elecraft] K3 Diversity Question: RIT

2021-02-25 Thread Tom Doligalski via Elecraft
I’ve rediscovered Diversity RX on my K3, and have a question.

Scenario: I’m working folks on 40M CW with a bit of QSB. Diversity is on, and
things are working great.

Suddenly I receive an off-frequency call, say up a couple hundred Hz. Normally
no trouble, as I just use my trusty RIT control to move up and copy him, so I
can keep my TX on the original frequency. But, in Diversity, the second VFO
remains on the original frequency rather than tracking with the main RX. As a
result, I get two signals until I clear the RIT.

Am I missing something? I really would like BOTH receivers to track the RIT in
Diversity.

Re: [Elecraft] sdr console and the RTL SDR blog usb dongle

2021-02-07 Thread Tom Georgens
Eric

I have used an RTL-SDR with a K3 on its IF out and it works for me. The
RTL-SDR will need to direct sample at that frequency.

It is an inexpensive device and, while a remarkable amount of functionality
for about $25, it will have its limitations.

My use case is specifically as contesting waterfall. I am not depending on
it as a radio replacement and I do not use HDSDR so can't comment on that.
My implementation is driven by my contest logger (Writelog) to have the
waterfall integrated with my log and rig control. This has worked very well
for me and a more flexible contest option than a P3

I was wondering if one can use the RTL SDR blog sma v3 sdr dongle with sdr
console with the k3. Is it ok to connect to the if output and set the if

it will work with the RTL SDR as a pan adapter. I have also seen that HDSDR

2021-01-28 Thread Tom & Barb Valosin
Condensation in shack - yes, keeping the environment at a temp not lower
than 50 degrees F or 10 C is helpful. However - is the room insulated?
Insulation for walls, floor and ceiling? AND - importantly, utilize a
self cycling auto-draining (drain to exterior or covered sump)
de-humidification. Set humidity level between 40 an 50 percent. This is
optimum for the gear as well as human comfort and, importantly, mold
(mould) growth opportunity is greatly minimized. Our governments, the
military and many independent research organisations have repeatedly
found the optimum environmental conditions for human health and
efficiency to be 68 to 72 degrees F or about 20 to 22 degrees C and a
relative humidity of 40 to 45 percent. Why the military research into
this? Submariners, long distance military aircraft, sub-terranian
control centers, space flight.

I also supply this information to my Home Inspection Clients - "Home

I never had a P3, but used an SDR-IQ running SpectraVue software as an
alternative.? Of course it requires a computer but if you're logging on one
already port sharing works fine.

SpectraVue "knows" the Elecraft frequency conversion and offers perfect
tracking, demodulation (if you want it and can stand the latency) and

And yes, I have expressed interest to Elecraft for the synth upgrade.

We (K8AJ and myself) will be buying a K4, but when it shows up, um, she
gets primary use of it.

I'll be allowed to use the K3 and any leftover antennas. So I had better

I agree.

My sort of early K3 ( s/n 17xx) simply has received every possible
upgrade put including the new synth board and the new I/O board. So is
pretty close to the K3S seems to me. If I was unlucky enough to have
purchased the last K3 I would have simply put in all the upgrades. Both
are worthy radios. My K3 is a field day veteran on a 4A club and did
very well with nearby K3 stations ( we did an all Elecraft FD with a K2
and multiple K3s. With antenna gain on 40 and 20.)

Over the last several weeks I’ve been having problems with the arc fault
detector (AFCI) in my fusebox. This does not control the power to the shack, but
to our garage door operners.

It seemed random at first, but I think I’ve tracked it down a bit.

Running an Elecraft K3/KPA500/KAT500 combo. The AFCI ONLY trips when on 80 CW,
running 100 watts (the KPA500 in standby bode). If the KPA500 is ON (running
500 watts) there is no problem.

Seems fine on other bands….

80M antenna is a Carolina Windom. The usual baluns/line isolator/grounding
stuff.

Any ides?

Kinda worried that there is an issue with the 100 W amp in the K3.

Re: [Elecraft] Reaching across the chronological divide

2021-01-02 Thread Tom Azlin W7SUA

Sorry to not agree EricJ.

I have made a lot of friends over multiple QSOs, in my case digital
modes. To me that is the magic that continues. Including long QSOs with
hams across the ponds. But then I got my Novice in 1972.

At local neighborhood watch got asked if I could help if we in this
rural area lost land lines and cell phone service. So I explained how
ham radio can help. No kids there so getting them excited still work in
progress.

Anything else is pretty much a waste of time and resources just to
talk to Helen. Seriously, there's a sizable investment in specialized
equipment to make contact via AMSAT or whatever. The contact is set
up for them. Then Jon and Helen wait to be told when the link is
ready. If that's worth doing and will attract young people, then just
shoot me. It sounds terminally boring.

Making that investment in specialized equipment can't be justified as
utilitarian communication because it's expensive and inefficient. If
the point is to contact your friends any time you want to, they are
already doing that with a half a dozen reliable instant technologies
all accessible from the same smartphone. I don't get where ham radio
comes in to solve a problem they have already solved. Certainly not
with a system that requires waiting 15 minutes for a satellite to get
in position, and a Cupertino Robot to set up the call.

I don't have the answer to attracting young people to a rapidly
changing hobby in an even more rapidly changing world. The aspects of
the hobby that attracted many of us was the sheer magic of radio
itself. We weren't attracted to it because it let us contact our
friends. Even then we had the telephone for that. We were attracted
to the magic. Nine times out of ten, the communication part was "599
OM PSE QSL".

I always heard how DX contacts would allow me to learn about other
cultures. Actually, it did. After exchanging signal reports, I'd look

up their city with an atlas or encyclopedia. But I learned zip on the
air. A few California Kilowatts could hog a DX station, and chit chat
for a few minutes, and did because they could. But the rest of us
never got beyond the basic exchange and fought like hell for that.
But it was magic so it didn't matter that it wasn't all that
practical.

The magic that attracted us is gone. Maybe there's new magic to be
found, but it's different magic that most of us with 30-70 years in

the hobby won't understand...and probably won't like. We are the
wrong people to even be considering answers but anyone expecting to
make a living from the hobby will have to find that new magic. It
ain't instant communication and it ain't the ham radio equivalent of
retro turntables.

Communications utility is being able to contact your friends at

A communications experience could be one where the path / mode is

The turn tables I'm looking at have RCA jacks to connect to an

People of this generation are not going to configure virtual COM

[Elecraft] A new release of Win4K3Suite is now available

2020-11-22 Thread Tom
Hello,
There is a new version of Win4K3Suite available. This release has a number
of updates for the KPA1500 as well as some fixes for Log4OM.

It also has a built in HRDLogbook server and the
EiBi Shortwave database.
There are many more features like full access to menu items, a cluster
display using your ClubLog credentials and many more.
You see more information here:

Re: [Elecraft] Fair price for a used KPA500?

Hi Jim,

If I am selling a good radio or accessory still in production I shoot
for getting 75% of the current price. Usually throw in add ons put in
later. Did that with my fully loaded second K3 7 years ago. And a KX2 I
just sold to upgrade to a KX3. Buyers were happy and I was happy.

If the good working radio is out of production I try to get 50% of what
I paid. And try to get past eBay sales for the radio to back up that 50%
( or 75%) is a good value at a local fest.

For vintage tube gear all bets are off and I try to get 50% of the last
few eBay sales.

"I would like to see an IcomCI-V interface for the KPA500/KAT500
combination. "

It probably wouldn't be too difficult to implement. I have seen code for a
CI-V decoder and, once the required TX or RX frequency has been extracted,
it would be easy to compute and send band to KPA500 and frequency to KAT500.

No motivation here though and I don't know if anyone has published a
suitable interface.

Re: [Elecraft] K3s/KPA500 communication issue?

2020-11-16 Thread Tom Doligalski via Elecraft
This question has come up several times over the years, and I have always
followed the threads closely, since I have occasionally had the same issue.

The consensus seems to indeed involve a communication issue: the KPA500 sends a
signal to the K3 when its operational status changes, but for whatever reason
the K3 fails to see message. There is no expectation that the K3 will “ACK” the
signal from the KPA500.

I have found it important to watch the K3 LCD to see that the operational
change has actually been received and acted upon. If not, cycling the OPER
switch on the KPA500 until you actually see the K3 is in the desired mode.

Works every time…

[Elecraft] K4/K4D Audio Codec question...

2020-11-14 Thread Tom
Does the K4, especially the K4D, have two audio codecs, one for each
receiver, available via the USB connector?

This would be highly desirable with the digital mode, being able to
monitor the MSK 144 and FT8 frequencies on 6 at the same time.

I asked this same question a few months ago, but never got an affirmative reply.

My interest is in recording the settings for my K3, so I can use them to guide
my K4 configuration (if and when it eventually appears!).

Re: [Elecraft] Group Support

2020-10-10 Thread Tom Azlin W7SUA

Hi Mike,

In my case takes me time to do the suggested tests. Late yesterday I
could not reproduce the problem. Sorry I did not reply to the group with
the resolution. My K3 now does not seem to be switching in to AM around
5 MHz when I have the mode set to DATA. I have some tests to do if I can
reproduce the error.

Unfortunately this often results in a deathly silence as to the
resolution. Clearly this could be a learning point for others who might
trip over the same problem one day, even if it was just finger trouble
or a brain fart. Assuming they read the posts.

Whatever, most discourteous.

No joy. Seemed to still be in AM mode with DATA displayed. So I reached
out to Elecraft Support with result of a test to run and send them the
results. But now I can not reproduce the error.

Hi Tom,

If your current set up works well, why not just wait until the K4 is

I have the same set up as you for the past ten years. Am happy to wait

In the meantime, I am running my K3/P3/KPA500/KTA500. Works well.

So, the purpose of this email is to generate information about what I should

Maybe the Kenwood?
