Re: [Elecraft] Disabling the ANT2 selection

2013-09-11 Thread Tom H Childers
If you only have the switch connected to Antenna One, and no other
antennae, why would you ever push the antenna button?

The front panel of the K3 displays the selected antenna just below
the first digit of the main VFO, indicating which antenna output is
selected, making it easy to determine which antenna output has been
selected.

Having said that, the dummy load solution will work and provide a
method of having the dummy load available for testing.

I was receiving some strong signals this morning even when the ANT2 was

I guess I could put a dummy load there in case I do a dumb thing...

I have nothing against small loops.  I built a simple 40 meter STL from about
8 feet of hardline and used inductive coupling and it was very, very
impressive.  Then I built the mother of all loops from Home Depot 2 inch
copper tubing, an Edmunds Scientific 1 rpm motor, and a Jennings vacuum
variable.  Cost me over $500 !  It was for 20 meters only.  It worked
amazingly well, including a QRPp contact with UA1CE not once, but twice.

The reason I abandoned small loops was a practical one -- frequency agility.
Because I had the option, I installed my remotely coupled multiband attic
doublet.  My advice to those dealing with antenna restrictions is to consider
small loops along with other solutions if the opportunity is there but not to
view a small loop as something magical and mystical.

My QRPp QSO with Gene could have occurred with a wet noodle if the conditions

I don't think anyone will question the fact that a good antenna system
is one of the most important factors in a ham station being able to
communicate efficiently particularly when using qrp power levels.

While I would agree that a full length dipole antenna, or beam antenna
would be preferable to a smaller 3' loop antenna, in my case that is not
only impractical but impossible at my home qth since I live in a high
rise building that has steel supports throughout the building instead of
wooden studs. This effectively makes the interior of my high rise
apartment inside of a faraday rf shield and prevents most radio signals
from radiating or receiving when using an antenna inside of my
apartment. This means an antenna has to be mounted outside of the
apartment, and the balcony is the only area available to install an
antenna.  With such a limited area to install an amateur antenna, I find
the MFJ 3' loop to be one of the better alternatives to be able to
operate my ham station on the hf bands, and still be able to change
bands and tune the antenna remotely with the MFJ Remote Control Unit.

With the myriad of various CCR's and antenna restrictions around the
USA, many hams are forced to utilize compromise antenna systems to
operate from their home qth, and finding the best alternative antenna
configuration for an individual ham's location can be challenging.
Therefore, I am very pleased with the various Loop antennas available
from various ham vendor sources, since it allows many hams the
capability to get on the air, when they might not be able to do so
without the smaller loop antennas. Before deciding that hf ham radio
operation is not feasible from an antenna restricted location, I would
encourage a person facing such restrictions to seriously consider trying
a loop antenna.

that I can't pass it up.

A friend has a Yagi antenna (HF tri-bander) that he wants to measure the SWR
before he raises the antenna up on the tower.

Question: is this accurate or does the proximity of ground (maybe two feet
high)
so strongly affect the SWR reading that the measurement is not accurate.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Hi-Cut/Lo-Cut not available

2013-07-06 Thread Tom H Childers

It sounds like you may have the situation described below, from K3
Owner's Manual D10 Page 58.

SIG RMV [T] NOR (Advanced) OPTIONAL SPURIOUS SIGNAL REMOVAL: Can be
used to remove fast-tuning receiver “birdies” that are audible even
with an antenna connected. (An alternative in SSB mode is to turn on
auto-notch.) Limitations: Applies only to CW/SSB/DATA modes, and
 only to the main receiver.

* In CW and DATA modes, SIG RMV should not be used in
combination with a CONFIG:PB CTRL setting of Shif t=.01.*

PB CTRL Shift=.05 (Advanced) Specifies the granularity of the
passband SHIFT control on a per mode basis: .05 (default) or .01
kHz.
Select the desired mode first, then select the desired granularity.

*Limitations: Only applies to CW and DATA modes. Selecting .01
kHz reduces the SHIFT range and disables HI CUT and LO CUT.
May interfere with spurious signal removal (CONFIG:SIG RMV), i.e.
“removed” signals may not be shifted the right amount, and thus may
again be audible. *

Re: [Elecraft] OT P3 video of RFI, ideas?

2013-07-06 Thread Tom H Childers

That is a plasma TV near your home.

How do I know? My next door neighbor has one. He just moved in last
month and this week the noise started.

What can you do about it?

I went next door and asked him if he had a plasma TV and he answered
Yes, but I don't watch it except on Saturdays when my girl friend is
here.

I brought him to the shack and showed him the noise on my P3 SVGA
interface, them we went to his home and turned it off, after which we
returned to the shack and I showed him the signal was gone.

He now has a borrowed copy of the ARRL RFI Book and an explanation
from me of how to contact the Mfgr and ask them to fix it. I know
they can't, so I then told him to contact the FCC and report an FCC
Part 15 violation and give the name of the Mfgr (SamSung) when they
tell him sorry they can't fix it.

He was very nice about the whole thing and we now observes quiet time
except on Saturday night when I'm usually not on the air.

Fortunately he has a very large LED TV in the Den which makes no
noise.

On 7/5/2013 12:29 PM, Bill Hammond wrote:

The below is a recording and includes sound of this nasty bit of pulsating
 RF.

 Video recording:

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/ak5x/9214448105/

It is not always there. When it is there in the 20-meter band there are
siblings almost as strong at the following frequencies:

 13.975

 14.032-the recording

 14.126

 14.220

 14.282

 14.469

In addition, there are less strong signals that follow the pulsation; one is
visible on the recording at 14000 (far left on the P3). They are also in the
17 meter band. They are not in the 15 meter band or above.

I have pulled the big switch and it is still there on battery power. My
suspension is a neighbor with plasma television. Is this what plasma TV
looks like? It is directional in nature and the strongest signal comes from
a 40-degree heading, roughly Europe from my location, or to a cluster of
 homes to my northeast.

Contact Panasonic and remind them that the TV was certified as Part

Those of us who head copy CW find Farnsworth code to be very
aggravating because we are hearing words instead of characters.

Military Operators don't like it either because they can't tell where
5 letter code groups start and end.

This is the way it is intended. The rubber feet of the K3 and KPA500 touch the
P3 and their carrying handles are on the outside. Also you will note that the
mic and headphone jacks are on the extreme left where their cables will not
get in the way of log books etc.
This is all fine and dandy until I had to set the station up as a field
portable. The position was cramped and the chair fixed. I had the P3 directly
in front, but I had to reach to the left for all the important controls. I had
the bright idea of switching the positions of the KPA500 and the K3. It was
much better. My right hand fell naturally upon the tuning controls. When I got
home I decided to keep the K line in the reverse order. I use the rear sockets
for mic and phones, so there is no worry about leads crossing the operating
desk. The handles of the KPA500 and K3 are now against the P3 case, but this
makes little difference - See the photo of my station on QRZ.com.

When I first got licensed in 1976, the Oklahoma City Hamfest had a

would send CW with their left foot. Having your shoe on was

The JB Hunt company is also a major user of rail to move freight.
I've often seen a mile of them on the rails.

I'd like to see more use of rail transportation by rail to cut down
on the number of overloaded 18 wheelers tearing up our roads. Here
in TX they have passed legislation allowing 100,000 lb loads of wheat
on the I-45 corridor to Houston. If it's legal to haul 100,000 lbs,
they will haul 150,000 lbs with 54 foot long trailers.

Sorry about the OT remarks ;o(

Re: [Elecraft] SVGA brightness (K3)

2013-05-19 Thread Tom H Childers
Paul,

Your monitor should have brightness and contrast controls. You
should use those to adjust the SVGA brightness and contrast, as you
would on any TV or monitor.

Setting the SVGA bias will only adjust the color saturation of the

Re: [Elecraft] K144XV

2013-05-18 Thread Tom H Childers
That sounds like a P3 cable problem. There have been reports of
faulty BNC cables supplied in a batch that was bad from the supplier.

Try contacting Elecraft and describe the problem to them.

Also while you are waiting to call Elecraft over the week-end, make
sure that ALL of the cable routing is as it was before the
installation. That covers any existing cables you may have moved
around.

Good luck,

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 - power out question

I have found that the KPA500 and KAT500 combination is outstanding.
In fact one thing I noticed right away about the KAT500 is that when
it is tuned correctly I can both see and hear the difference in RX
signal strength in the headphones and on the P3 SVGA screen.

My Alpha 87A and Palstar AT5K are both setting idle now until I begin
to get serious about DXCC on 160m and 80m CW this fall.

was fine. :-)

Watching the K3 Utility dialog boxes I saw that file 'hmcu0467b.hex' was
being loaded. Looking in the directory, I saw that file 'hmcu0467.hex'
also was present and 17 minutes newer. H, sez I, so after
deleting 'hmcu0467b.hex', MCU 4.67, FPF 1.15, and DSP1 2.81 firmware
files all loaded correctly.

I am using the Elecraft K3 Utility for Linux Version 1.12.9.22, if
that matters.

As the file size between 'hmcu0467b.hex' and 'hmcu0467.hex' is the same
(but the diff utility shows a lot of differences), the utility
apparently chooses 'hmcu0467b.hex' by determining that the extra
character makes it a later file. In this particular case, it happens to
be earlier and this K3, S/N 4762, didn't like it at all.

On the plus side, I now know how to recover from a bad MCU load, the
first time this has happened to me in over 2 1/2 years of owning my K3.

I can see it now.

You're sitting in the easy chair, reading a book with a nice cup of
tea on the table beside the KX3. You reach over to pick up the K3
then raise it to your mouth to speak into the internal microphone.
The coax cable knocks the tea cup over which dumps tea into your mini
power supply, causing it to lose all it's smoke and the power cord
pulls your YF's favorite lamp over and breaks it.

One hour later your YF banishes you from the den.

Usually when a computer locks up it is not the fault of equipment
that is connected to the computer. It is usually a problem with

Since you are controlling the K3 with a software application, the

Have you contacted the N1MM Logger folks to ask for help? That would

For the past couple of years, on the top of the N1MM Logger screen, I often
get the message K3 VFO A not responding. When I get this message my
computer is locked up and I'm unable to log or transmit. A very bad problem
to have when running stations during a contest. The problem seems to occur
aprx. every 15 minutes when operating RTTY and aprx. every 30 minutes on CW.

People have told me you have RF getting into your system. So for the
past 2 years I've been putting double chokes on every cable connected to the
K3
and logging computer. And I endlessly keep working on grounding all of my
equipment better. When the problem didn't get fixed, I replaced all of
the cables but that didn't help either.

I've tried 4 different Windows XP computers, and 2 different Windows 7
computers. All computers have given me about the same number of K3 VFO A
Not
Responding error messages, except for my Office computer which runs
Windows 7 and has a Quad Core processor, this computer will often operate a
couple hours before giving me the dreaded K3 VFO A Not Responding message.

(so that's much better than the other computers)

A few other thoughts:

-I've received these error messages whether running 100 watts or 1,500
watts so I'm not sure high power is the problem.

-I've had the dreaded K3 VFO A Not Responding message occur while
receiving, though it usually occurs while I'm transmitting. So I'm not sure
transmitting causes the problem.

So I'm wondering if the problem could be with the K3? Perhaps I should
try a different brand radio to see if the problem goes away.

Has anyone else frequently had this terrible K3 VFO A Not Responding
message occur to you?

Thank You in advance for your recommendations.

73,
Dick- K9OM

Re: [Elecraft] K3 PA temp acting up

2013-04-27 Thread Tom H Childers
Howdy Buck,

The first thing that comes to mind is that a strait key has something
on top of it, but I sure you checked that. Is it possible that there
is a short in a keying circuit or maybe a foot switch that has
something on it or is shorted out while the rig is set in the CW
mode?

I don't think having either situation could cause transmit unless the
rig is in CW or data mode.

Is the TX LED lit up?

Good luck finding it...

Works great!

I'd rather Elecraft spend their design and development time on

Re: [Elecraft] P3 desires

2013-04-17 Thread Tom H Childers
I don't use the notch because I only work CW on the ham bands, and I
use the U indicators, but when I do work phone on MARS frequencies
I would like to have the notch width appear between the vertical
markers of the U as a colored band the same color as the U that
matched the width of the notch centered on the notch frequency.

Another suggestion:

When working MARS frequencies, some of their MARS members have their
mic's set as though they are a broadcast station, which tends to make
their signals too far to the low side for good phone HF comunication,
so I use SHIFT on those stations.

It would be nice to be able to see the shift with about a 50%
transparent band showing the shift.

Niether of the above being a crucial update for me.

I got this question off list and I thought my answer would be of

How do you see effects of 'NOTCH' on the P3?

Currently you get a wide green band on a blue background of the
band scope which covers the frequencies your current filters are
letting through. If the notch indicator divided that green band
into two bands, with a blue space between them the width of the
notch filter, I think it would be quite self explanatory. The
waterfall below the the band scope will let you know what is
going on in the places you have filtered out.

Re: [Elecraft] Filter help

2013-03-23 Thread Tom H Childers
Arie,

Changing the filter width in the Main RX does not change the filter
width in the SUB RX.

To change the filter width in the SUB RX you must HOLD the B SET
button. You will see B SET displayed in the display. Using the same
method as with the MAIN RX adjust the width and then HOLD the B SET
button again and you will have the SUB RX Filter that you want.

When working split with the K3, I usually set the SUB RX filter a
little wider than the MAIN RX filter, so I can hear more band width
in a pile up

Re: [Elecraft] K3 feature request 'CW in SSB' change

2013-03-21 Thread Tom H Childers

I use CW when in SSB when on 6m a lot, but I jeep the paddles in a
clear area where nothing can touch them except my thumb and
forefinger. Even then I bump them anyway.

Joe is right! We don't need changes to the K3 to protect us from
making mistakes.

Re: [Elecraft] computer - P3 - K3 communications blues

2013-03-15 Thread Tom H Childers

Eric,

You should be able to run one and only one additional application to
the P3. Once you have one application connected to the P3 serial
port, that application blocks any other applications from using the
serial port the K3 the P3 are using. So if you are trying to use the
same serial port for more than one software application it will not
use the P3 port. It will give you a port in use error message.

THEN I hooked up my nice new P3 today.
It talks to the K3 FB - it gets freq data from the K3 and sends VFO

Everything else I've tested on the P3 also seems to work FB.

HOWEVER, the PC cannot talk to the K3 THROUGH the P3 - via either the
Prolific USB/serial link - or via a purely RS-232 link using the serial
port on the windows box, which I also tried.
[Just in case it was a USB incompatibility issue]

K3 Utility running in the Windows box polls the K3 via the link and the
P3 and gets no response.
Everything is set to 38,400 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity.
The P3 is running the firmware which was installed at Elecraft, it was
shipped to me a week ago.

Any suggestions - please?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 S-Meter

2013-03-05 Thread Tom H Childers
RST is not a reflection of S-METER readings at all. It is a means of
describing the quality of a received signal, not just the strength.

Furthermore Amateur radio manufacturers (not Elecraft) are notorious
for not following the 50 microvolts = S9 rule, so S-meter readings
are meaningless as measure of signal quality in most cases.

The link below describes the RST system for signal quality reports.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RST_code

The folks who defined the RST system probably didn't have S-Meters on
their receivers.

2013-02-22 Thread Tom H Childers

On my p3 with the KAT500 tuned to 28.004434 the birdie is -95 dBm.
when I turn the KPA500 off it is still there at -110 dBm.

In my opinion that indicates the birdie is from the K3. When I turn
my 4 el Yagi-Uda to the south which puts the antenna 40 ft above and
30 ft North of the tower the signal rises to -112 dBm, also
indicating the signal is from the K3.

There is another weak birdie at 28.000388 that is -105 dBm. this one
completely disappears when power is removed.

good NVIS and moderately good for longer distance). It is fed with a
current balun and coax cable. I use a MFJ-945E tuner to improve
matching off center frequency: 3920 7150 KHz. Some years ago I had
a 252-foot 160m dipole, but it was too close to ground for a decent
radiation angle (top loaded verticals seem better for the top band).

Before setting up my Hygain TH3mk4 triband yagi, I also used a 20m
dipole. I have a 10m/6m dual-band J-Pole which is resonant on my
favored frequencies and again can be tuned using the antenna tuner to
extend off frequency.

I use a 43x122-foot Inverted-L with base loading coil on 502-KHz. I
plan to try tuning it for 160m, as well. The antenna is resonant
with base-loading over a 5-KHz bw, although extremely short on 600m
(quarter wave = 490-feet); radiation resistance =0.8 ohms.

Thus I avoid high SWR on transmission lines (3.5:1).

73, Ed - KL7UW
I run 100w on 502-KHz, and up to 270w on 160-10m using either the K3 or KX3.

Is there a way to clear/reset ALL the macros without reloading the firmware?

Re: [Elecraft] Macros

2013-02-16 Thread Tom H Childers

I agree with Joe.

I don't use MACRO's, but I do write software that uses the K3 Command
set.

The first thing I see is that you are calling the MN255 command in
each of the MACROs. The MN command is only needed if you are
accessing the menu to change a setting, and you are not doing any
changes to the menu, so you can remove MN255 from your MACRO's.

The rest of the commands look OK, but I suggest you create your
MACRO's using the K3 Utility. If you do that you can test MACRO's
until they work as you want them to.

Good luck.

Your assessment is right-on in that respect! Embedded control systems

As I remember, there were a lot of developers who ended up doing things they

Not a great model to follow, IMHO.

There are two ways to reply to messages in an email application.
1. If you select REPLY, your reply will only be sent only to the

This message was created by selecting Reply To All from my email

Re: [Elecraft] Using KAT500 With Antenna Switch

2013-01-27 Thread Tom H Childers

I'm using the KAT500 here with a multi-band NVIS loop for MARS on
port one and several other antennas on port 2 which has switched
antennae on it. Some of the antennae on port 2 are in the same range
as the MARS antenna, but the KAT500 very smoothly handles the tuning
correctly on both ports.

Couldn't ask for a better tuner.

Thanks to Dick and the rest of the folks at Elecraft for another fine
product.

If you have five 80 meter antennas remotely switched, and they're all

At the other extreme, if your 5-port remote switch selects between five
monobanders and that switching occurs before you transmit on a new band,
then the KAT500 sees the one antenna connector as a single multi-band
antenna. Tuner settings are located by frequency and antenna connector, and
as long as you choose the same antenna each time you transmit on a given
band, then you should expect quick memory recall tunes.

Subject: [Elecraft] Using KAT500 With Antenna Switch

All,

In the next few weeks, I'll be ordering my KAT500. In my shack, to save on
feed line tangles, I use an MFJ 5-port remote antenna switch. Since I only
have one feed line into the shack, and thus will only use one port on the
KAT500, can I assume that I'll experience (expected) issues with storing
tuning settings in memory? By this, I mean that when I switch back and
forth between my dipole and my 5-band Hexx Beam, the tuner will go through a
tune cycle each time and not necessarily remember the settings? This is
what I expect, given that I plan to only use one antenna port, but want to
verify that my assumption is, indeed, correct.

Thanks for the bandwidth.

1. Make sure the K3 tune power is set at 25W.
2. Select the frequency you are going to operate at.
3. Set the KAT500 output port by tapping the ANT button.
4. If you are using a KPA500 put it in standby.
5. Hold the XMIT button on the K3 to activate the K3 tune power.
6. The KAT500 will start tuning. You don't have to push the TUNE
button on the KAT500.
7. When the KAT500 finishes tuning Tap the XMIT button on the K3.

From my reading of the manual, one must tap the KAT500 TUNE button to

I'm in SSB mode on the K3 (my friend is almost entirely an SSB op), that
I must either switch to a mode like CW to do this, followed by key-down,
or use the TUNE (Hold XMIT) button on the K3 to get the required RF?
Then tap the K3 TUNE/XMIT button again to put the K3 back in receive?
That looks like 3 button pushes to do a KAT500 tune. Right? Or can the
required RF be supplied in SSB mode by just speaking into the mic?

Sorry, I know this would be easy if I could just try it! Thanks!

FWIW, the utility also does not unlock 27MHz, for hopefully obvious

MARS frequencies in that band, they'd work with you to make that happen.
Also the KBPF3 is required if you're going to operate too far away from the
amateur bands.

One of these days, I'm going to have to remember to write in to see if
there is some documentation about what frequency ranges the KAT3 remembers
its settings for.

Re: [Elecraft] 2-meter solid-state linear amplifiers with K3 2-meter option

2013-01-21 Thread Tom H Childers

Good advice, Peter.

Nothing less than LMR600 should be used for feed lines at 2m and
70cm. Naturally if you're really interested in VHF/UHF work, some
sort of hard-line is better.

Another thing I recommend:

Never, ever use a regular multi port switch box for VHF/UHF. Make
one your self using coaxial relays. You can switch 4 antennae with
two relays. My installation is configured for 2m with stacked
horizontal loops on the NC side of the relay and the 18 el Yagi-Uda
on the NO side. The 70cm system is done the same way.

My relays are inside a military ammo can on the mast of the tower.
The ammo can and relays cost less than a store bought switch box.

building one is relatively easy and there are kits and boards available for

May I suggest that before buying an amp that you review the system that you

better investment than an amp.

Re: [Elecraft] 2-meter solid-state linear amplifiers with K3 2-meter option

2013-01-20 Thread Tom H Childers

If I were new to the use of solid state VHF/UHF amps I would make
sure I bought amps with protection for SWR and overdrive mistakes.

I use TE Systems amps with the K3 and XV432 in the shack, but as
others have said, be careful with any amps that have no protection
circuits. The cost of repair (if not done by you) can be as
expensive as a new amp with the protection circuits.

I think Mirage amps are good amps, but haven't had one since MFJ
began manufacturing them.

I use an M2 18XXX 18 element. It's very long. I think it's 32 feet
or more long. When using it, it's like aiming a rifle. I like it

For omni directional horizontal polarization I use a pair of M2
stacked loops on both 144 and 432 MHz. They are all on the same mast
with the 70cm loops stacked between the 2m loops. I also use them
for 2m repeaters up to 75 miles.

I even tried using the MCU bootloader with the same failure. I have tried
about 6

USB-serial driver that got corrupted. I tried a dedicated RS232 port on

I also disconnected the K3 from the P3 with no success.

I have successfully loaded the previous beta so I presume that their is no
issue

fine after re- installing the previous beta.

Is there something different in this beta release that makes loading

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 problem

2013-01-13 Thread Tom H Childers

In your original post you say that you turned on the KPA100 in the
K3. You should have the KPA100 turned off when using the KAT500. The
KAT100 is not needed when using the KAT500.

Make sure that when you are tuning with the KAT500 the TUNE POWER is
set to 25W. Below 20W will not give an accurate tune-up.
Instructions for adjusting the TUNE POWER are in the K3 manual.

Also, you should tune the KAT500 by using the TUNE button on the K3.
Instructions for using the TUNE button are also in the K3 manual.

My recommendation is that you check all of your KAT500 and KPA500
connections carefully by referring to the manuals for each one and
then read the tuning procedure for the KAT500 in the manual,
following each step carefully.

Good luck!

KAT500 says otherwise and I am at a loss to figure it out.
My antenna is a Cushcraft A4S with 110 feet of high quality RG-8

It's never stopped doing that, so now as a work-around, I tap the
FINE button on the right of the main VFO knob with my social finger

display, does that tell me that the input voltage to the rig is low,
or does it indicate that the internal battery is low?

Re: [Elecraft] Broadcast band interference

2013-01-08 Thread Tom H Childers

Check the addresses of your local AM radio broadcasters. You may
have one very close to you and not know it.

Here's a way to find where and who the broadcaster is.

If you have an AM radio in the house compare the signal on the KX3
with those you hear on the AM radio to see if you can identify the
station you're hearing.

If a station is very close, you may have to use a filter at the shack
end of the feedline to notch it out.

Re: [Elecraft] Problem with a K3 screw - suggestions needed

2012-12-27 Thread Tom H Childers

Good advice Don.

Another thing that will destroy Phillips head screws is the use of a
reed and prince screw driver, so verify that you are REALY using a
Phillips screw driver.

The very tip of a Phillips screw driver is blunt, not sharp, but a
reed and prince screw driver (which looks very much like a Phillips)
is sharp on the tip and will not seat completely in a Phillips screw,
thus slipping and destroying the socket.

Beware when buying inexpensive screw drivers that are call Phillips
screw drivers. Check the tip and make sure it's not sharp.

Fabio,

That screw in into a 2D connector.
You will be able to remove the front panel by removing the other 2
screws in the 2D connector, and then you should be able to rotate the 2D
connector body in a direction that will loosen the screw threads.
Elecraft does have replacement screws. You do not have to purchase the
SS kit, just order by the part number listed in the assembly manual -
you can order one or any multiple you want.

The proper size screwdriver is a #1 Phillips which should be available
worldwide. Do not use a worn Phillips screwdriver, it is certain to
slip and strip out the screwhead. If you have had trouble, I suggest
you invest in a new screwdriver.

I use my #1 Phillips more than most in my Elecraft repair activities,
but if I find my screwdriver does not firmly hold a screw when the
screwdriver shaft is held horizontally, that tip is worn sufficiently
that it should be replaced. I do not want to strip out the screwheads
on my customer's equipment. In other words, do not use worn screwdriver
tips and all should be well.

 Hi guys,
today I decided to try to apply a mod (Audio Low Pass filter) to my
 beloved K3.
My K3 was born in September, 2009 and I bought it factory assembled.
Up till now, I just added a couple of additional filters and the KV3A
board; so, I never unassembled the front panel before.

Today I found that one of the upper front panel screws was probably
 overtightened (or defective).
I tried to unscrew the screw with several phillips screwdrivers
(little and big), to no avail.
The side effect of my (unsuccessful) tentatives was that:
 1) I was not able to unscrew the screw
 2) now the screw head is damaged (see pic at
 https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/V1aTCoSq5qkgs3y-beE_DdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink)

I got to unassemble the front panel unscrewing a couple of screws
more, but I'd like to solve this little problem (moreover, it's ugly).
Before going with some more destructive methods (I am thinking about
drilling the screw??), I'd like to have some savy suggestion from the
 community...
Moreover, do you know if Elecraft has an additional screw kit
available (I don't need the stainless steel ones)?

As a side note, I found that almost all the flat-head screws were very
soft and damage-prone (differently from the other round-head screws).

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 a good tuner or great tuner

2012-12-24 Thread Tom H Childers
I have absolutely no complaints regarding the KAT500.

I have two sets of antennae connected to the KAT500. One set is an 8
position switch box and the other is an NVIS loop that covers all
frequencies from 2.2MHz to 28MHz used for short distance
communications on MARS.

The antennae on the switch box are connected to the #2 output and the
loop is connected to the #1 antenna. there is no duplication of
frequencies between the ports. After I used the tuner on each
frequency I use, it immediately switches to the correct antenna port
and if the frequency has been tuned in the past the tuner does not
re-tune for that frequency unless something has changed at the
antenna.

I couldn't ask for more.

for band segments from previous training but without the frequency
information prior to been sent RF it is unable to make the most efficient
use of it. I'm no EE so I do not know what it would take to implement this,
how much in extra hardware and software design but in my opinion if the
KAT500 was passed the operating frequency information from the transceiver
instead of just band information that would elevate it from a good tuner to
a great tuner.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 question

2012-12-24 Thread Tom H Childers
It seems like I've heard someone suggest that spray-on car wax does a
good job of making the ladder line real slippery. I haven't tried it
yet, but I have two ladderline pieces on my NVIS loop. Twenty seven
feet of feed line and a ten foot stub at the opposite corner that
detune a bit in the rain. However when the loop needs to be
re-matched I just hit the straight key here and the KAT500 finds a
match that works. However I seldom run less than 100 watts.

You don't have to keep that power level, Bob. You only need it if the KAT500
needs to retune, and then only for the retune cycle. For that you might QSY
 a few KHz

On CW or SSB I could try that. With some of these WSJT-Like modes, it's
pretty important to be on the same freq u were on, within Hertz; And,
call me old, but with about 6 to 10 seconds before the other cycle
starts, there isn't a lot of time to QSY and retune.

to a clear spot although between five and twenty watts you are
only talking about a one S-unit difference in signal.

thanks. Although I was more worried about damaging the K3 than the
signal strength.

The next thing is to find out why your antenna is so sensitive to moisture.

hmmm, true. Same when there is ice on it or snow. The other night in a
45mph wind, the 160m DP was going up and down about 30 feet it looked to
me. I use blocks and pulley to let it float It was graceful to watch
but worrisome too.
