Re: [Elecraft] Disabling the ANT2 selection
If you only have the switch connected to Antenna One, and no other antennae, why would you ever push the antenna button? The front panel of the K3 displays the selected antenna just below the first digit of the main VFO, indicating which antenna output is selected, making it easy to determine which antenna output has been selected. Then I built the mother of all loops from Home Depot 2 inch copper tubing, an Edmunds Scientific 1 rpm motor, and a Jennings vacuum variable. Cost me over $500 ! It was for 20 meters only. It worked amazingly well, including a QRPp contact with UA1CE not once, but twice. The reason I abandoned small loops was a practical one -- frequency agility. Because I had the option, I installed my remotely coupled multiband attic doublet. My advice to those dealing with antenna restrictions is to consider small loops along with other solutions if the opportunity is there but not to view a small loop as something magical and mystical. While I would agree that a full length dipole antenna, or beam antenna would be preferable to a smaller 3' loop antenna, in my case that is not only impractical but impossible at my home qth since I live in a high rise building that has steel supports throughout the building instead of wooden studs. This effectively makes the interior of my high rise apartment inside of a faraday rf shield and prevents most radio signals from radiating or receiving when using an antenna inside of my apartment. This means an antenna has to be mounted outside of the apartment, and the balcony is the only area available to install an antenna. With such a limited area to install an amateur antenna, I find the MFJ 3' loop to be one of the better alternatives to be able to operate my ham station on the hf bands, and still be able to change bands and tune the antenna remotely with the MFJ Remote Control Unit. With the myriad of various CCR's and antenna restrictions around the USA, many hams are forced to utilize compromise antenna systems to operate from their home qth, and finding the best alternative antenna configuration for an individual ham's location can be challenging. Therefore, I am very pleased with the various Loop antennas available from various ham vendor sources, since it allows many hams the capability to get on the air, when they might not be able to do so without the smaller loop antennas. Before deciding that hf ham radio operation is not feasible from an antenna restricted location, I would encourage a person facing such restrictions to seriously consider trying a loop antenna. 73, --Bill - K6IH- __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

It sounds like you may have the situation described below, from K3 Owner's Manual D10 Page 58. SIG RMV [T] NOR (Advanced) OPTIONAL SPURIOUS SIGNAL REMOVAL: Can be used to remove fast-tuning receiver birdies that are audible even with an antenna connected. (An alternative in SSB mode is to turn on auto-notch.) Limitations: Applies only to CW/SSB/DATA modes, and only to the main receiver. * In CW and DATA modes, SIG RMV should not be used in combination with a CONFIG:PB CTRL setting of Shif t=.01.* PB CTRL Shift=.05 (Advanced) Specifies the granularity of the passband SHIFT control on a per mode basis: .05 (default) or .01 kHz. Select the desired mode first, then select the desired granularity. *Limitations: Only applies to CW and DATA modes. Selecting .01 kHz reduces the SHIFT range and disables HI CUT and LO CUT. May interfere with spurious signal removal (CONFIG:SIG RMV), i.e. removed signals may not be shifted the right amount, and thus may again be audible. * 73, Tom Amateur Radio Operator N5GE Licensed since 1976 ARRL Lifetime Member QCWA Lifetime Member On Sat, 6 Jul 2013 08:23:33 -0400, KD7YZ Bob kd...@denstarfarm.us wrote: Howdy K3' people: I've searched the manual and pushed/held/tapped a lot of K3 buttons. Re: [Elecraft] OT P3 video of RFI, ideas?
That is a plasma TV near your home. How do I know? My next door neighbor has one. He just moved in last month and this week the noise started. What can you do about it? I went next door and asked him if he had a plasma TV and he answered Yes, but I don't watch it except on Saturdays when my girl friend is here. I brought him to the shack and showed him the noise on my P3 SVGA interface, them we went to his home and turned it off, after which we returned to the shack and I showed him the signal was gone. He now has a borrowed copy of the ARRL RFI Book and an explanation from me of how to contact the Mfgr and ask them to fix it. I know they can't, so I then told him to contact the FCC and report an FCC Part 15 violation and give the name of the Mfgr (SamSung) when they tell him sorry they can't fix it. He was very nice about the whole thing and we now observes quiet time except on Saturday night when I'm usually not on the air. Fortunately he has a very large LED TV in the Den which makes no noise. Military Operators don't like it either because they can't tell where 5 letter code groups start and end. 73, Tom Amateur Radio Operator N5GE ARRL Lifetime Member QCWA Lifetime Member On Wed, 19 Jun 2013 20:24:56 -0400, Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com wrote: [snip] While copying W1AW to see what would happen, I noted that the Farnsworth spacing used at lower speeds did not decode as words - there was a space between each letter - and yes, that is what the Farnsworth method does, it sends each character at a higher rate than the set speed, but there is a delay between characters, which the decoder properly interprets as a space. The rubber feet of the K3 and KPA500 touch the P3 and their carrying handles are on the outside. Also you will note that the mic and headphone jacks are on the extreme left where their cables will not get in the way of log books etc. This is all fine and dandy until I had to set the station up as a field portable. The position was cramped and the chair fixed. I had the P3 directly in front, but I had to reach to the left for all the important controls. I had the bright idea of switching the positions of the KPA500 and the K3. It was much better. My right hand fell naturally upon the tuning controls. When I got home I decided to keep the K line in the reverse order. I use the rear sockets for mic and phones, so there is no worry about leads crossing the operating desk. I exclude the origin from the outside of the transceiver, I disconnected all possible noise sources such as switching power supplies and similar. It 's normal or there may be a problem? I have found that the KPA500 and KAT500 combination is outstanding. In fact one thing I noticed right away about the KAT500 is that when it is tuned correctly I can both see and hear the difference in RX signal strength in the headphones and on the P3 SVGA screen. Re: [Elecraft] K3 VFO A Not Responding message
Usually when a computer locks up it is not the fault of equipment that is connected to the computer. It is usually a problem with software that is running on the computer. Since you are controlling the K3 with a software application, the software is the first place you should look for the problem. Have you contacted the N1MM Logger folks to ask for help? That would be the first thing I would do. 73, Tom Amateur Radio Operator N5GE ARRL Lifetime Member QCWA Lifetime Member On Wed, 1 May 2013 01:25:59 -0400 (EDT), r...@aol.com wrote: Hi Guys, Hoping someone can help me fix the following problem which is driving me crazy: For the past couple of years, on the top of the N1MM Logger screen, I often get the message K3 VFO A not responding. When I get this message my computer is locked up and I'm unable to log or transmit. A very bad problem to have when running stations during a contest. The problem seems to occur aprx. every 15 minutes when operating RTTY and aprx. every 30 minutes on CW. People have told me you have RF getting into your system. So for the past 2 years I've been putting double chokes on every cable connected to the K3 and logging computer. And I endlessly keep working on grounding all of my equipment better. When the problem didn't get fixed, I replaced all of the cables but that didn't help either. I've tried 4 different Windows XP computers, and 2 different Windows 7 computers. All computers have given me about the same number of K3 VFO A Not Responding error messages, except for my Office computer which runs Windows 7 and has a Quad Core processor, this computer will often operate a couple hours before giving me the dreaded K3 VFO A Not Responding message. (so that's much better than the other computers) A few other thoughts: -I've received these error messages whether running 100 watts or 1,500 watts so I'm not sure high power is the problem. -I've had the dreaded K3 VFO A Not Responding message occur while receiving, though it usually occurs while I'm transmitting. So I'm not sure transmitting causes the problem. So I'm wondering if the problem could be with the K3? Perhaps I should try a different brand radio to see if the problem goes away. Has anyone else frequently had this terrible K3 VFO A Not Responding message occur to you? Re: [Elecraft] P3 desires
I don't use the notch because I only work CW on the ham bands, and I use the U indicators, but when I do work phone on MARS frequencies I would like to have the notch width appear between the vertical markers of the U as a colored band the same color as the U that matched the width of the notch centered on the notch frequency. Another suggestion: When working MARS frequencies, some of their MARS members have their mic's set as though they are a broadcast station, which tends to make their signals too far to the low side for good phone HF comunication, so I use SHIFT on those stations. It would be nice to be able to see the shift with about a 50% transparent band showing the shift. Niether of the above being a crucial update for me. 73, Tom Amateur Radio Operator N5GE ARRL Lifetime Member QCWA Lifetime Member On Wed, 17 Apr 2013 09:44:26 -0700, Bill Frantz fra...@pwpconsult.com wrote: I got this question off list and I thought my answer would be of wider interest. The waterfall below the the band scope will let you know what is going on in the places you have filtered out. Re: [Elecraft] Filter help
Arie, Changing the filter width in the Main RX does not change the filter width in the SUB RX. To change the filter width in the SUB RX you must HOLD the B SET button. You will see B SET displayed in the display. Using the same method as with the MAIN RX adjust the width and then HOLD the B SET button again and you will have the SUB RX Filter that you want. When working split with the K3, I usually set the SUB RX filter a little wider than the MAIN RX filter, so I can hear more band width in a pile up 73, Tom Amateur Radio Operator N5GE ARRL Lifetime Member QCWA Lifetime Member On Sat, 23 Mar 2013 10:45:54 +0100, Arie Kleingeld PA3A p...@xs4all.nl wrote: SubRX filtering will also track the mainRX filters if diversity is switched on. 73 Arie PA3A Op 22-3-2013 22:25, Bill W4RM schreef: I.E. if I go to CW and select the FL4 400 HZ filter on the main receiver the SUB receiver doesn't sound like the filter is selected. Re: [Elecraft] computer - P3 - K3 communications blues
Eric, You should be able to run one and only one additional application to the P3. Once you have one application connected to the P3 serial port, that application blocks any other applications from using the serial port the K3 the P3 are using. So if you are trying to use the same serial port for more than one software application it will not use the P3 port. RST is not a reflection of S-METER readings at all. It is a means of describing the quality of a received signal, not just the strength. It is fed with a current balun and coax cable. I use a MFJ-945E tuner to improve matching off center frequency: 3920 7150 KHz. Some years ago I had a 252-foot 160m dipole, but it was too close to ground for a decent radiation angle (top loaded verticals seem better for the top band). Before setting up my Hygain TH3mk4 triband yagi, I also used a 20m dipole. I have a 10m/6m dual-band J-Pole which is resonant on my favored frequencies and again can be tuned using the antenna tuner to extend off frequency. I use a 43x122-foot Inverted-L with base loading coil on 502-KHz. I plan to try tuning it for 160m, as well. The antenna is resonant with base-loading over a 5-KHz bw, although extremely short on 600m (quarter wave = 490-feet); radiation resistance =0.8 ohms. Thus I avoid high SWR on transmission lines (3.5:1). 73, Ed - KL7UW I run 100w on 502-KHz, and up to 270w on 160-10m using either the K3 or KX3. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Macros
I agree with Joe. I don't use MACRO's, but I do write software that uses the K3 Command set. The first thing I see is that you are calling the MN255 command in each of the MACROs. The MN command is only needed if you are accessing the menu to change a setting, and you are not doing any changes to the menu, so you can remove MN255 from your MACRO's. The rest of the commands look OK, but I suggest you create your MACRO's using the K3 Utility. If you do that you can test MACRO's until they work as you want them to. Good luck. 73, Tom Amateur Radio Operator N5GE ARRL Lifetime Member QCWA Lifetime Member On Sat, 16 Feb 2013 14:12:15 -0500, Jim Leder \(Hotmail\) k8...@hotmail.com wrote: The 2 macros I use work OK since I reloaded the firmware. Re: [Elecraft] 2-meter solid-state linear amplifiers with K3 2-meter option
Good advice, Peter. Nothing less than LMR600 should be used for feed lines at 2m and 70cm. Naturally if you're really interested in VHF/UHF work, some sort of hard-line is better. Another thing I recommend: Never, ever use a regular multi port switch box for VHF/UHF. Make one your self using coaxial relays. You can switch 4 antennae with two relays. My installation is configured for 2m with stacked horizontal loops on the NC side of the relay and the 18 el Yagi-Uda on the NO side. The 70cm system is done the same way. My relays are inside a military ammo can on the mast of the tower. The ammo can and relays cost less than a store bought switch box. 73, Tom Amateur Radio Operator N5GE ARRL Lifetime Member QCWA Lifetime Member On Mon, 21 Jan 2013 16:13:30 + (GMT), Peter Torry peter_to...@btopenworld.com wrote: Phil, I use a K3 with internal transverter for 2m driving a LDmos power amplifier to good effect. Re: [Elecraft] 2-meter solid-state linear amplifiers with K3 2-meter option
If I were new to the use of solid state VHF/UHF amps I would make sure I bought amps with protection for SWR and overdrive mistakes. I use TE Systems amps with the K3 and XV432 in the shack, but as others have said, be careful with any amps that have no protection circuits. The cost of repair (if not done by you) can be as expensive as a new amp with the protection circuits. I think Mirage amps are good amps, but haven't had one since MFJ began manufacturing them. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 problem
In your original post you say that you turned on the KPA100 in the K3. You should have the KPA100 turned off when using the KAT500. The KAT100 is not needed when using the KAT500. Make sure that when you are tuning with the KAT500 the TUNE POWER is set to 25W. Below 20W will not give an accurate tune-up. Instructions for adjusting the TUNE POWER are in the K3 manual. Also, you should tune the KAT500 by using the TUNE button on the K3. Instructions for using the TUNE button are also in the K3 manual. My recommendation is that you check all of your KAT500 and KPA500 connections carefully by referring to the manuals for each one and then read the tuning procedure for the KAT500 in the manual, following each step carefully. Re: [Elecraft] Broadcast band interference
Check the addresses of your local AM radio broadcasters. You may have one very close to you and not know it. Here's a way to find where and who the broadcaster is. If you have an AM radio in the house compare the signal on the KX3 with those you hear on the AM radio to see if you can identify the station you're hearing. If a station is very close, you may have to use a filter at the shack end of the feedline to notch it out. I tend to see the problem mostly on 30, 20 and 17 meters. Any reason I'm getting this type of interference and is there any way I can take care of it or block it. Sometimes it's loud enough to be a problem when trying to copy weak CW signals. Re: [Elecraft] Problem with a K3 screw - suggestions needed
Good advice Don. Another thing that will destroy Phillips head screws is the use of a reed and prince screw driver, so verify that you are REALY using a Phillips screw driver. The very tip of a Phillips screw driver is blunt, not sharp, but a reed and prince screw driver (which looks very much like a Phillips) is sharp on the tip and will not seat completely in a Phillips screw, thus slipping and destroying the socket. Beware when buying inexpensive screw drivers that are call Phillips screw drivers. Check the tip and make sure it's not sharp. 73, Tom Amateur Radio Operator N5GE ARRL Lifetime Member QCWA Lifetime Member On Wed, 26 Dec 2012 18:15:05 -0500, Don Wilhelm w3...@embarqmail.com wrote: Fabio, That screw in into a 2D connector. You will be able to remove the front panel by removing the other 2 screws in the 2D connector, and then you should be able to rotate the 2D connector body in a direction that will loosen the screw threads. Elecraft does have replacement screws. You do not have to purchase the SS kit, just order by the part number listed in the assembly manual - you can order one or any multiple you want. The proper size screwdriver is a #1 Phillips which should be available worldwide. Do not use a worn Phillips screwdriver, it is certain to slip and strip out the screwhead. If you have had trouble, I suggest you invest in a new screwdriver. I use my #1 Phillips more than most in my Elecraft repair activities, but if I find my screwdriver does not firmly hold a screw when the screwdriver shaft is held horizontally, that tip is worn sufficiently that it should be replaced. I do not want to strip out the screwheads on my customer's equipment. In other words, do not use worn screwdriver tips and all should be well. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/26/2012 5:46 PM, Fabio IZ4AFW / NZ1W wrote: Hi guys, today I decided to try to apply a mod (Audio Low Pass filter) to my beloved K3. My K3 was born in September, 2009 and I bought it factory assembled. Up till now, I just added a couple of additional filters and the KV3A board; so, I never unassembled the front panel before. Today I found that one of the upper front panel screws was probably overtightened (or defective). I tried to unscrew the screw with several phillips screwdrivers (little and big), to no avail. The side effect of my (unsuccessful) tentatives was that: 1) I was not able to unscrew the screw 2) now the screw head is damaged (see pic at https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/V1aTCoSq5qkgs3y-beE_DdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink) I got to unassemble the front panel unscrewing a couple of screws more, but I'd like to solve this little problem (moreover, it's ugly). Before going with some more destructive methods (I am thinking about drilling the screw??), I'd like to have some savy suggestion from the community... Moreover, do you know if Elecraft has an additional screw kit available (I don't need the stainless steel ones)? As a side note, I found that almost all the flat-head screws were very soft and damage-prone (differently from the other round-head screws). __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html 73, Tom Amateur Radio Operator N5GE ARRL Lifetime Member QCWA Lifetime Member __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 a good tuner or great tuner
I have absolutely no complaints regarding the KAT500. I have two sets of antennae connected to the KAT500. One set is an 8 position switch box and the other is an NVIS loop that covers all frequencies from 2.2MHz to 28MHz used for short distance communications on MARS. The antennae on the switch box are connected to the #2 output and the loop is connected to the #1 antenna. there is no duplication of frequencies between the ports. After I used the tuner on each frequency I use, it immediately switches to the correct antenna port and if the frequency has been tuned in the past the tuner does not re-tune for that frequency unless something has changed at the antenna. I couldn't ask for more. 73, Tom Amateur Radio Operator N5GE ARRL Lifetime Member QCWA Lifetime Member On Mon, 24 Dec 2012 08:27:02 +1300, John Shaw zl1...@nzart.org.nz wrote: Having a KPA500 and been a potential customer for the KAT500 I have been watching reports about the KAT500 operation, unless I misunderstand it seems the KAT500 only has band information available to it so it needs a sniff of RF to make band segment adjustments. I think it can already store settings for band segments from previous training but without the frequency information prior to been sent RF it is unable to make the most efficient use of it. I'm no EE so I do not know what it would take to implement this, how much in extra hardware and software design but in my opinion if the KAT500 was passed the operating frequency information from the transceiver instead of just band information that would elevate it from a good tuner to a great tuner. 73 John ZL1BYZ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html 73, Tom Amateur Radio Operator N5GE ARRL Lifetime Member QCWA Lifetime Member __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 question
It seems like I've heard someone suggest that spray-on car wax does a good job of making the ladder line real slippery. I haven't tried it yet, but I have two ladderline pieces on my NVIS loop. Twenty seven feet of feed line and a ten foot stub at the opposite corner that detune a bit in the rain. However when the loop needs to be re-matched I just hit the straight key here and the KAT500 finds a match that works. However I seldom run less than 100 watts. 73, Tom Amateur Radio Operator N5GE ARRL Lifetime Member QCWA Lifetime Member On Mon, 24 Dec 2012 14:01:19 -0500, KD7YZ Bob kd...@denstarfarm.us wrote: On Monday Claire used a Straight-Key to send: -Original Comment--- You don't have to keep that power level, Bob. You only need it if the KAT500 needs to retune, and then only for the retune cycle. For that you might QSY a few KHz On CW or SSB I could try that. With some of these WSJT-Like modes, it's pretty important to be on the same freq u were on, within Hertz; And, call me old, but with about 6 to 10 seconds before the other cycle starts, there isn't a lot of time to QSY and retune. to a clear spot although between five and twenty watts you are only talking about a one S-unit difference in signal. thanks. Although I was more worried about damaging the K3 than the signal strength. The next thing is to find out why your antenna is so sensitive to moisture. hmmm, true. Same when there is ice on it or snow. The other night in a 45mph wind, the 160m DP was going up and down about 30 feet it looked to me. I use blocks and pulley to let it float It was graceful to watch but worrisome too. 73, Tom Amateur Radio Operator N5GE ARRL Lifetime Member QCWA Lifetime Member __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
