Re: [Elecraft] K3 that has gone deaf
George, do you have a 2nd RX installed? If so check the signal at the AUX input with your 2nd RX after re-routing the signal path. If not I can say from my experience with my three K3's it's the notorious D25 in 99%. 73 Udo, DK5YA Am 12.10.2022 um 18:54 schrieb George Fremin III: I have a K3 that has gone deaf. From doing some reading I see that D25 could be the issue. Is there a way for me to prove that or do I just need to replace D25 to find out? I do notice that if I touch some areas on the bottom board the signal does increase. Re: [Elecraft] Common K3 failure modes???
- Diodes at input blown up because of extremely strong signals near-frequency. Bandfilters may help, as does careful frequency planning and some antenna distance. (ages ago I used a FT747 which uses a light bulb as protection - after a heavy radio weekend I had the lightbulb open and one of the input coils fused!) 73, Geert Jan PE1HZG I own 3x K3, one a pure "S" and 2 which are pimped to be a "S" (almost..). Blown diodes at the input (both Main and Sub RX) are the most common failures I'm struggling with for several years with each of my K3's. None of them blown by strong nearby signals but all of them by lightning in summer. I've never been faced by a direct hit - luckily - but a strike say some 500 meters or even a kilometer away will send these diodes to the great Mannitou Of Radio. I have to admit that this is a hilltop QTH and sometimes I forget to disconnect the whole stuff when I'm in a QRL hurry or something similar (XYL hurry i.e..). Fun fact: during our DU-DXpedition on Panglao Isl. we were in the very heart of all thunderstorms years ago when strong linghtning apperaed every evening and night for hours. We had two K3 with us and none of them struggled with dead diodes at the input. Just because I had a box with several spare with me? Only Murphy knows. [Elecraft] KIO3B - different audio levels?
I've upgraded both of my K3 while ago with all parts available to make them K3S (more or less). My main K3 shows some weird behavior with the audio level comparing left and right stereo channel (KIO3B). I'm feeding this K3 mainly with 144 transverter signals from XPol yagis (moonbounce system) with the Hpol signals on the main RX and Vpol signals at the second RX (AUX). Main RX is left channel on the USB soundcard while SUB RX is the right channel (Windows 10, MIC input). Even when on both RX (main and sub) the HF signal level is exactly the same (i.e. -120dBm from a HP8664A signal generator, split by 3-dB for main and sub) the left audio channel (main RX) shows exactly 6dB less compared to the right audio channel (sub RX) at USB audio out. On the IF-side (28 MHz) signal strength is exactly the same level, measured with my Siglent Spec Analyzer. Just .34dB difference main/sub. This doesn't happen on my 2nd K3 which is almost exactly the same inside like #1 except it's a 10W version. Any idea? One of these was the sub Rx and a full matching set of crystals for it. As upgrades happened I did them all and wasn't using the Sub Rx in diversity so much but, the advantage of the Sub Rx was always there with flexibility I take for granted. So I upgrade to the K3s and migrated the sub Rx to it as well. I just don't think of diversity much but that was one of the reasons I bought the Sub Rx in the first place. With the 3 dB loss going to Diversity, I just listened more with the main receiver and let it go from there. So today I'm working a ve7 on 10M and the band is going out. I can hear him but it's at that marginal iffy point, I was missing characters in his CW. I have a HI-Z triangular & a circle 8 pair of Rx antennas. The Circle 8 rocks on the low bands, has a filter to cut out above 40M but the triangular has no such filter and I often hear better on it than on the the roof mounted tribander. So for fun, I used diversity and the triangular on the sub, 160 sloper for the Tx antenna & Voilà, I heard him so much better, finished the Q and that reminded me of the real advantage of diversity and why it is an asset. So now it's tonight, I see 3C0L is still on the air at around 3AM their time, on 20M. They're heading home today and the low band antenna is packed up already. What troupers to still be in the game at this point. But I digress... So here they are, I don't have a good antenna for 20M, have to use the 160M antenna or tribander. RFI from the neighbors makes the tribander useless so I hear them on the sloper and can hear them on the Hi-Z Triangular a bit better but much QSB so remembering the success with the VE7 earlier I go Diversity & all of a sudden, solid Q5 copy, no QSB and I snagged them on 20 CW. Diversity really made the difference. I bought the K3s because it had such excellent specs, nothing else to me came close, save for 1-2 radios that in 09 were hot and cost more than a new car. And they weren't any better in practicality than the K3 was. I bought the Sub Rx for the diversity and now today, while the K3s is itself stellar in all the right ways, it is an a better product with the Sub Rx. I'm really honored to have such an incredibly capable radio. Thanks Christopher, compared to high quality external devices SNR and THD+N is rather poor. And so is the dynamic range and the max. sampling rate of just 48KHz. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Main RX gone deaf
Vic, TX works perfect, it's just a RX issue. The pin diodes are all o.k., my guess: a relay has gone crazy in the switching circuitry. Or it's a low pass filter issue. Will investigate in these parts now. 73 Udo, DK5YA Am 01.05.2016 um 06:40 schrieb Vic Rosenthal: I would suspect one of the relays in the path from the antenna, through the RX ant switching circuitry. Nuf said, 100% ACK! Thanks Jim, happy holidays. Udo, DK5YA Am 18.12.2015 um 05:53 schrieb Jim Ewing: Regarding posts reflecting impatience with KIO3B deliveries, other displeasure: I don't agree with you. I have owned my K3 for about 2 months, after researching matters fully and finally making my decision to buy. As a benchmark, I also collect and operate Collins radios, which are works of art and evoke the character, talent, vision and elegance of Art Collins. I love my K3 and greatly admire Elecraft for reasons that parallel why I love Collins radios and the legacy of Art Collins. In at least these respects: 1.Elecraft are people who clearly build these radios as a labor of love. They operate cw (sometimes during lunch break!), do QRP, hike and accordingly know what’s needed to build radios that are a joy to operate – even outdoors and on the trail where radios are put to the greatest test. They come from a long line of great radios, having built the NorCal 40 and the Sierra, among other great radios. I can tell from the craftsmanship, design, attention to detail and ergonomics, that my K3 is a labor of love. 2.I admire their story. I admire how Wayne Burdick left his day job to start this company, and how Eric also bet his assets on the venture as well. They believe in and love what they do, and my K3 sitting in my shack always reminds me of that powerful story. They are not beholden to the bankers who might encourage more massive production, corner cutting and expediency, next-Q profit mentality over quality. They have the discipline to avoid spreading themselves too thin. They have the courage to keep their focus on doing things well, even if that sometimes means we have to wait. Sometimes, as here, good things come to people who wait. 3.Their manual is well written, well organized, cogent, and pleasing-to-read – some of the best technical prose I have ever read (this I can say after practicing telecoms patent law for 33 years). The manual is not just some random listing of buttons and features like you see in other manufacturers’ manuals, but rather reflects the thought, care and organization of someone who has put himself or herself in the operator’s shoes. 4.As a builder, I appreciate the thought, competence and innovation reflected in how their circuits are designed, for maximum performance and reliability, and minimal power consumption. I also think it’s great they don’t seem to feel compelled to hire a Jony Ive for the latest cosmetic design in order to sell radios. 5.Their customer support is orders of magnitude above everyone else. The other night, for example, I sent an email about some error messages I was getting, and Elecraft responded with the correct fix early the next morning. Turns out I had inadvertently, in boneheaded fashion, hit the Config button and changed a setting. The level of care, tact and patience reflected in the email, on top of the raw technical competence, were not lost on me. 6.That said, I am doubly dismayed, saddened and annoyed when my reflector message list is fouled with the whining of people who seem blind to these great radios and this great company. People who whine because they want whatever *right now *so they can dash off to their island without delay, who are cheesed because the knobs are not sufficiently shiny, who seem affronted by the notion of having to open their radio up to add some of the amazing boards and circuits offered by this best-of-planet company because it might mar the paint job. I am reminded of that New Yorker cartoon some years ago that shows a Met Patron standing in front of a Monet and complaining, reflecting more on herself than on the artist. Would you people please *just stop*? Thank you. Re: [Elecraft] K3 RX issue with KAT3A?
The suspect was pursued, caught, arrested and taken to the garbage with the soldering iron. It was a defective pin diode that caused the loss of 10 dB. Thanks to all who have given me advice. 73 Udo, DK5YA Am 02.11.2015 um 16:18 schrieb Udo Langenohl - DK5YA: Gents, in spring I made an upgrade to my K3 (#59xx) with the internal ATU KAT3A. The strange thing: neighbor stations with similar setup always gave much better reports than me, at least 10 dB better. I was struggling a lot with my antennas, checked coax every now and than etc. but everything was o.k. At that time my main RX became suspicious. Last week I bought a K3/10W (#39++) from a local ham as a backup here in my shack. Comparing both rigs shows a huge difference in sensitivity. Very weak signals, almost in the noise on 10 Meters are clearly audible in the freshly bought K3 while there's almost nil on my old one. So i fired up my HP8664A signal generator today and found my old K3 to be at least 9dB worst compared to new one. This is for the main RX in my old K3 while the second RX iny my old K3 is almost similar to the new K3 when fed through the AUX input (not through ANT 1!!). So whats going on here? [Elecraft] WTB: K3 (old) parts
Gents, just purchased an older K3F (ser.39xx) from estate (local ham passed away). This K3 is very basic, just 10W, 2.7KHz filter and KBPF3. Nothing else. For upgrading I'm looking for KXV3A, KPA3A, KAT3A, KRX3A etc.. If you've got parts for sale just drop me a note. Overseas offers welcome. Anything worng with the latest firmware release, is this a new feature, a bug or is it me doing something wrong? Re: [Elecraft] KXV3B install - no problems
Just got my KXV3-B as a replacement of the former KXV3-A. Installing complete after 1 hour. Removing the back panel makes things much easier btw. But there's an issue. The 1 mW calibration fails. Thats what the Elecraft Utility says: Elecraft K3 Utility Revision 1.13.5.9 OS Version 6.1 Build 7601 Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2 K3 MCU revision 05.26. RS-232 speed 38400 bit/s. I made a replacement because my guess was: KXV3-A has a damage. I use my K3 mostly on VHF with transverters, especially on 144 MHz EME. I'm running a Xpol configuration with 4 antennas on 144 EME with two identical transverters, both in phase and locked by a common external LO with 10 MHz GPS control for Hpol and Vpol. HPol RX is fed to the KXV3 XVTR In/Out while Vpol is fed to the AUX RF input. I can listen to both planes simultaneously using diversity receive. But something very strange happens when I compare signals on both planes. I have a 144 MHz beacon nearby (just 25 miles away). That beacon is running 8 W on a Hpol antenna. On my Hpol (main RX via KXV3) input this beacon comes up to S9+35 dB while on Vpol (second RX via AUX) it's endstop (S9 +60dB). The beacon is in the line of sight, there's a lot of RF on my location from this beacon. It's definetely not from the transverters or from mismatched antennas because when I change inputs and connect the Hpol transverter output to the AUX RF it's suddenly S9 +60 dB too. Both main and sub RX are exactly in the same configuration, filters, bandwidth, NB Off, etc.. I checked S/N on KXVR3-A (old board) and AUX few days ago with my HP8664A signal generator. On 28.200 (TVTR IF) I measured: Top values: KXV3-A TVTR IN: -10dBm = S9+25dB AUX IN: -10dBm = S9+60dB (!) KXV3-A TVTR IN: +3dBm = S9+60dB Huge difference of 13dBm Low values: KXV3-A TVTR IN: -134dBm = signal detectable KXV3-A TVTR IN: -140dBm = none AUX IN: -140dBm = signal detectable Again a difference of at least 6dB or more. Now, with the new KXV3-B it's even worse, at least 22 dB difference between the AUX IN and TVTR IN. What the heck is going wrong here? MAIN RX dead? 73 Udo, DK5YA Am 19.06.2015 um 12:04 schrieb Barry Simpson: I have just completed installing the KXV3B in my K3 s/n 1397. I updated the firmware to the required beta version and the new preamp 2 seems to work perfectly although no signals yet heard on 6/10/12m. I was initially troubled by the pre flashing on the display and thought there was some fault. However, I assume that it is an indicator that Pre 2 is turned on. Please can you remove that feature as I find it mildly irritating. Mine is an early serial number K3 that I built around August/September 2008 and until installing the KXV3B today, I had not even taken the top cover off for several years. It was a pleasant surprise to find the interior of the K3 looking absolutely pristine and dust free, other than for a very light coating on the PA heat sink, which I cleaned off. I also took the opportunity of replacing the battery (the original) although the voltage still showed 2.97 after all that time when I tested it. 73 Barry Simpson VK2BJ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to dk...@dk5ya.de -- ** Webs by DK5YA: * http://www.mmmonvhf.de/ [editor]* http://www.vhfdx.de/ [owner] * http://www.palekastro.de/[owner] * http://www.solweb.de/[owner] * http://www.spessartwetter.de/[owner] * ** __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] K3: SSB vs. CW/DATA A with TVTR
When running my K3 with my DB6NT/Kuhne transverter on 144MHz IF out is set to 1mW. That's o.k. for both CW and DATA A (WSJT), when 1mW is good for 25 W out at the TVTR. Thats perfect for my 2x GU74b amp. But in SSB it's completely different. My Heil Pro Set (electret) is working great but with mic gain set to 10 and compress to 20 ALC shows 6 to 7 units, compress some 10 but there aint no 1mW out at the IF out anymore. It's quite below, app. 0.5mW in the peak and thats good for not more than 10 W out at the transverter. I wonder why in SSB the IF out is much lower than in CW and DATA A mode. More mic gain aint help of course. Any idea what I'm doing wrong (probably?). Re: [Elecraft] K3: SSB vs. CW/DATA A with TVTR
Don, yes I'm measuring both peak and average power. I checked IFout pwr with my HP436A both in SSB and DATA A/CW. Did the same with my Bird peak/avg meter and the 25W head at the TVTR. Mic gain shows up to 7 bars in the peak and with compression 0 or up to 20 there's no increase. Max is 0.45 mW in SSB, says the HP463A, and 1.1 mW in CW/DATA A. I'll try ''TXG VCE'', John G4ZTR had that idea. 73 Udo, DK5YA Don Wilhelm wrote: Udo, If you are measuring average power rather than peak power, you will see a marked reduction in average power with SSB even though the peaks are the same power as CW and DATA. Re: [Elecraft] [KPA500] - 144MHz Version?
Allan G Duncan wrote: I was recently studying the schematics of the KPA500 and looked at the specification of the VRF2933 devices which are used in the RF deck of the amplifier. I noted that the devices are rated to 150MHz which made me think a 144Mhz version of the KPA500 would be a nice addition for a K3 equipped with a K144XV 2m option (or indeed any 144MHz transceiver). If it's goin' to be at 2KW version it'll be mine. Just the 2 cents of an insane moonbouncer... [Elecraft] Jumper in my K3
While installing two new filters in my K3 today I opened the rig for the first time (it's quite new, just 4 weeks). After removing the top-cover and the bottom cover very carefully a small black 2 pin jumper was falling out of the box. I have no idea where it came from. I've read the book back and force but still got no idea where this jumper has been before, if it ever has been installed. This is my setup: K3/10-F 1 K3 10W Xcvr. KBPF31 K3 Gen. Cov. RX Module KDVR31 K3 Dig. Voice Recorder KRX3-F 1 K3 2nd RX KTCXO3-1 1 K3 TCXO (1ppm) KXV3A1 K3 RX Ant, IF Out Xvrtr Int Any idea what to do with this jumper and where it might been before? The rig ist still working, couldn't find any fault yet. 73 Udo, DK5YA -- ** Webs by DK5YA: * http://www.mmmonvhf.de/ [editor]* http://www.vhfdx.de/ [owner] * http://www.palekastro.de/[owner] * http://www.solweb.de/[owner] * http://www.spessartwetter.de/[owner] * ** __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Presets/Settings for JT65B / EME
Thanks to everyone replying to my several questions, works fine now and I'm quite satisfied. This reflector is a gold mine! :-) 73 Udo, DK5YA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 Presets/Settings for JT65B / EME
Hi, just joined the group. I was running my good old FT1000MP for 15 years as IF for my transverters doing EME and FSK441 mainly on 144 and up. Now I bought a K3 last week with several options. This nice little piece is going to be my new rig for VHF/UHF/SHF and the FT1000MP will retire (if the K3 will satisfy me needs...I guess it will). Of course I will still use my DB6NT TVTR's. I wonder who's running a K3 with transverters for WSJT/JT65B. Since this little box is full of different settings for mic gain, mic EQ's, filters and passband etc. I'd like to know your personal adjustments and presets for perfect RX/TX in JT65B. Anyone using Line In/Line Out and the rig in Data Mode A directly to the soundcard instead of a seperat interface for FSK441/JT65B? Will it work? 73 Udo, DK5YA P.S.: Please accept my apologize, perhaps all these questions poped up several times before. I was trying hard to scan the whole mail reflector but didn't find sufficient answers yet. -- __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
