[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (5-15-11)

2011-05-15 Thread Phillip Shepard
We started the net this week on 14.303 MHz, fitting in between nets at .300
and .306. Propagation was mixed with a lot of QSB. We had 27 participants
over the 21 minute net. The discussions were on cabling options for the
KPA500. See you next week.
Here is the list of participants.

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (5-8-11)

2011-05-08 Thread Phillip Shepard
The new frequency (14.3035) was taken by an NEQP station in running mode. I
elected to start at 14.307 as the Ohana net finished about 1800Z. The
frequency was announced on the reflector and on 14.3035. Hopefully,
everybody found us. Conditions were so-so, but we had 25 participants over
a 20 minute period, even with QRM. There were no post-checkin discussions
this week. Have a great Mother's Day. See you next week.

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (5-1-11)

2011-05-01 Thread Phillip Shepard
We switched to a new frequency this week - 14.3035 MHz. It seemed to work
out, so we'll try it again next week at the same spot. The turn-out was
modest this week, 23 participants. The only discussions were audio checks
and a request for feedback on the KPA500 (nobody on frequency had one yet).
The northeast US was light, and all rigs were K3s this week.

I noticed it too, and found that using AutoNotch reduced it enough to
hear some weak stations through it.

It seems to be strongest somewhere in the Tri-state. I auto-notched
it then tried to filter it out with no luck (notch helps but its still
very distinct).

Another note, I don't know about everyone else but 20m at 2PM EDT
(1800z) yesterday was very very noisy.

I had intentions of checking it Sunday and monitored the preceding
net, but was called to breakfast about 30-min before net time (10am
local). I got reading the newspaper and missed the net.

I had an interesting contact earlier on 20m with W6SMJ/mobile south
of Visalia, CA coming from the DX Conference. He could hear my 16w
fairly well though QRM finally drown me out (I supposed it was all
those guys with new KPA-500 tuning up!). Conditions seemed real good
at that time. I use a Hygain TH3mk4 triband yagi at 50 feet.

Oh well, maybe when the SteppIR is fixed

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (3-20-11)

2011-03-20 Thread Phillip Shepard
Well, we started the net on 14.314 (our usual frequency). We quickly drew
heavy QRM, with harangues to get off of their frequency. I got about 8 of
our stronger stations checked in, but the situation was deteriorating
quickly. I looked up band, found quiet at 14.317 and took the net there.
After a minute of being told to stay there and not come back to their
frequency, we were left alone. It went well after that and we had 37
participants over the total 30 minutes. I think finding a new frequency is
the best course of action - maybe in the 14.316 to 14.320 area. Here is the

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (2-27-11)

2011-02-27 Thread Phillip Shepard
Propagation was mixed - some stations were strong but many were weaker than
they usually are. We did have two DX check-ins (EI6 and ZL1). We had 35
participants over a 37 minute period. The discussions were on the hardware
requirements for diversity receive in the shortwave broadcast bands. There
was one check-in who seemed to be asking provoking questions. He may not
actually be licensed. Here is the list of participants.

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (2-20-11)

2011-02-20 Thread Phillip Shepard
The net got off to a slow start due to the terrible QRM from 14.313 and the
refuse taking over that frequency today. Rather than fight it, we moved to
14.316 MHz and were much better off. We'll see how the situation is next
week and see if we need to move again. Propagation was OK, and we had three
DX check-ins (DK1, EI6 and ZL1). We were also bothered a bit by pulsed QRM
of some kind but worked through it. We had 30 participants over a 34 minute
period, with six K2s. The discussions were on the KPA500 - Brendan, EI6IZ,
is field testing the amp and shared his feedback with us. Here is the list
of participants.

Propagation seemed poor in AZ. Usually Phil is 59 and I couldn't hear him
hardly at all. Relay stations and most others were not too strong either so
I didn't check in.

Hi,

Isn't it time to try to find a new frequency? I always have QRM from *both*
14313 and 14316. There are always politicos on 14313. In one of the earliest
nets, it was moved to 14310 which was very good here.

email me off-line about it. Thanks to everyone who checked in. Here is the

2010-09-19 Thread Dick Roth, KA1OZ
Once again, I'm afraid I heard nothing. I started listening to 14.314
from 1745 and continued until 1815 and I heard nothing but atmospherics.
During that time I qsy'd up and down to be sure I wasn't missing
anything. My antenna is a vertical and there is a rise in the land to
the west of me. Perhaps the combination cuts me off from the West! I'm
fine into eastern Europe, so I know that my rig's ears are fine.

I'll keep trying.

2010-09-05 Thread Phil and Christina
Propagation seemed good this week. We did have to move down 2 kc to get
away from a special event station that moved up to 14.315 for us. Hope
everybody found us ok. To me, most siganls were good, but there was
splatter at times running on top of the weaker signals. We still have
trouble at times picking up northwest US station that I struggle to hear.
I'll be looking for those of you in the midwest or Rockies to relay them to
me. Our discussion was on the synthesizer mod for CW and internal speaker
use. Thanks to everyone who checked in. Here is the list of participants.

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (8-29-10)

2010-08-29 Thread Phil and Christina
Propagation was uneven this week. The great plains and west were good here
in Oregon, but signals from the eastern third of the country were not very
strong. California was good at my QTH, but I needed relays for the
Washington stations. There was a quick discussion about the availability
date for the KPA500, with January 2011 being the current estimate. There
were 30 of us over 27 minutes. Thanks to everyone who checked in. Here is
the list of participants.

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (8-22-10)

2010-08-23 Thread Edward R. Cole
I was too late for the net but found Roger, K7SJ on 14.314 Sunday
morning and had a nice chat. After that John, N6JW/6 and I had an
even longer QSO. I am running my K3/10 with 14w to a triband yagi at
50-feet. Near QRP did quite nicely. Eventually, we will have
250-300w using a CCI kit amp, and 1500w with a HB-8877 in a couple
years when my project list dwindles a bit.

Sorry Brenden,

For some reason, I thought that you were portable W6. My apologies. I
guess that I have gotten too used to poor propagation and filled in the
blank incorrectly. You had a great signal well off the front of my quad.

Propagation seemed good this week. The number of check-ins was the largest
in quite some time - there were 42 of us over 34 minutes! Early in the net,
the check-in requests sounded like a DX pileup. The main discussion this
week was about the DSP board upgrade and its advantages. Thanks to everyone
who checked in. Here is the list of participants.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net Results (7-11-10)

2010-07-12 Thread Fred Atchley
Snip:

Ah, the vagaries of propagation! I tuned in to check into the net but I
could barely hear net control deep in the noise, and few of the responding
stations. I live 80 miles west of one of the California stations that
checked in and 80 miles north of he other, but I might as well have been on
the back side of the moon.

End snip

Hi Lew. All bands and nets suffered from low propagation at this QTH
(Oceanside, CA) yesterday. I've noticed though that when Phil points his
quad south, the situation improves. Maybe your location offers a similar
challenge. With the propagation situation it's hard to differentiate between
long period QSB and antenna rotation. In which case, I had a tendency to
move on. But lately I have been able to wait and catch Phil's signal when he
swings south.

The CW nets also were too noisy for me to use, but then again I have a
stealth wire antenna. Also, I doubt that Kevin can rotate his 40 M ant! Hi.

2010-07-11 Thread Lew Phelps K6LMP
Ah, the vagaries of propagation! I tuned in to check into the net but I could
barely hear net control deep in the noise, and few of the responding stations.
I live 80 miles west of one of the California stations that checked in and 80
miles north of he other, but I might as well have been on the back side of the
moon.

Maybe next week

2010-07-04 Thread Dick Roth, KA1OZ
I had S3 noise with barely SSB signals underneath, and those that I
could barely make out were at 14.313. Even with NR, I couldn't resolve
any signals to the point of understanding.

Hope to try again next week.

question that came up without an answer was the ship date for the P3.

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB net results (4-11-10)

2010-04-11 Thread Phillip Shepard
We had a good net today. Signals were generally good, and we had 27
participants over the 25 minute net. I swung my quad north and south to
listen for WA/OR and northern California stations. Relays pulled in Roger,
W7SJ, in WA and Brian, K0DTJ, in CA. We did have KL7QOW from AK check in.
The discussions centered around looking for more information on the P3.

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (4-4-10)

2010-04-04 Thread Phillip Shepard
We had a short and small net today. We had only ten participants, including
me. Easter probably had a lot of regulars tied up. It may not have been
helped by my quad being cranked down to about 40 feet due to high wind.
Brendan, EI6IZ, was the significant DX again. Anyway, the only discussions
were around audio quality with low frequencies cut and a query about the P3
availability.

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (3/14/2010)

2010-03-14 Thread Augie Hansen
Thanks to all who participated in today's post EQP SSB net. We had a
total of 26 check-ins with reasonably good conditions (A=5, K=0, and
SF=89). As is often the case, EI6IZ held the honors for the lowest S/N
and the greatest distance from the NCS. And NU4C had the highest S/N
during the net today.

Thanks are due also to John, N6JW, for his help throughout the net for
picking up stations that I had difficulty copying.

Please report any errors in the following list to me. My apologies to
two of the non-Elecraft participants for my forgetting to note their rig
information. (The list is in comma-separated format for easy importing
to a spreadsheet or database as a *.CVS file if you wish.)

2010-02-14 Thread Phillip Shepard
We had a good Valentine's Day net today. Signals were generally OK, and we
had 30 participants over the 28 minute net. The discussions centered on
information about the P3 (or lack thereof). One station reported trouble
getting registered for the reflector. Many in the east and southeast
reported cold and/or snow. In contrast, we have had a very mild winter here

low elevations. Here is the list of the group:

2010-01-11 Thread Terry Schieler
Miserable. I too was blanked in my attempts to check in from Missouri
yesterday. Could not hear net control at all or most other stations on
frequency either. Two stations I heard booming in I asked for help with a
relay and received no response. I figured the net wrapped up quickly and
was surprised to see this week's list of 40 some odd operators checked in.

Nice to see the list grow, even if I can't hear them. Next week!

73,

Terry, W0FM

--___

Propagation was tough in Massachusetts. I couldn't hear net control at
all, and requested a relay to the net at large several times but no-one
responded. Oh well, I'll try again next week!

Elecrafters,

Phil, NS7P, our regular NCS was away this week.

My thanks to Bill, NZ0T for calling back east to assist me, as well as other
relays. Signal strengths were varied, with moderately deep QSB.

There was one inquiry about the P3, pricing and availability. There was also
a question about the Hallicrafters net, as well, with some information
provided by two stations on frequency. Also Dave, KD0R is about to make
repairs to his K2, and confirmed the behavior as being the same as one
other owner who had the same symptoms. Replacing two diodes took care of the
problem, so we're hopeful that Dave will be on the net next week with the
K2.

Propagation was tough in Massachusetts. I couldn't hear net control at
all, and requested a relay to the net at large several times but no-one
responded. Oh well, I'll try again next week!

My SteppIR was lowered down to 15 feet, pointing north and I was
running 100 watts Phil. That's why someone took pity on me and relayed for
me. My K3 is on the bench awaiting parts and the fabled DSP upgrade board.
It was nice using the K2 for a change.

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (12/27/2009)

2009-12-27 Thread Mark C. Killmon
Elecrafters,

Phil, NS7P, our regular NCS was away this week.

My thanks to Steve, W0SZ, and Dave, W8OV for calling back east to assist me,
as well as other relays. Signals were not especially strong, and I have a
new, very slow, pulse noise source nearby. The K3's receiver was a real
help.

W6GS had the highest SN (3795) on the net today. Dean said he received the
rig Thursday, and that it still has new car smell. W8MYO had the lowest SN
(166).

We began at 18:00Z on 14.314, and closed the net at 19:01 with the following
36 check-ins + NCS. I quickly counted 22 states and two DX countries present
(plus US, of course.)

There was one inquiry about the P3, pricing and availability, without a

2009-12-21 Thread Dave, W8OV
Phil, the Reflector is getting out of control. While waiting for the
SSB net to begin I began reading mail on the Reflector. When I next
looked at the time, and listened, the net was over. I need a Q-signal
for Reflector interference, say QRI, perhaps.

Sorry I didn't make it,

Dave, W8OV

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (11-29-09)

2009-11-29 Thread Phil and Christina
The net today had 23 participants but was troubled by QRM from 14.313MHz.
The QSO on that adjacent frequency had said that is was wrapping up before
1800Z, but evidently stayed on that frequency after our net started. We
shifted up to 14.315 MHz part way through the net, but still were troubled
by the QRM. It seemed malicious at times with carriers on top of us. I
readily nulled them out and kept going. Peter, ZL1PWD, is becomming a
regular. He breaks me on the back of my beam. Good job, Peter. Our
discussions were on audio growling and its cures.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (11-15-09)

2009-11-20 Thread Phil and Christina
When we have an east coast US station with a potent signal/good antennas, we
can try having them listen for your area. That might help you check in, but
you probably won't hear most of the net. Somewhat Like Peter, ZL1PWD, who
checks in sometimes.

Hi Kevin,
Yesterday W2 on 20m was 59+ on my area, 18:25GMT.
No directional antenna on my side due to local constraints, only a 40m
DELTA loop sloping 45º, top feeded with an 4:1 balun from Bob KZ5R
(LLC-balun design)...located on the top of a 32 stairs building, less
1km from the sea.

Hi Kevin,
I'm a brand new one Elecrafter and received my K3 last Tuesday.
Only Elecraft company knows where K rigs have been solded to world
wide
Hams.
Am I the only Elecrafter in UAE ? I hope not Hi !
I will check tomorrow at the Emirates Amateur Radio Society (A62ER)
and will send a request on their website.

You've just learned me was an Elecraft net originating from Iraq, is
it
still active ?
The Elecraft net is also an useful tool to discover other Elecrafters

Hope to contact you as well

2009-11-15 Thread Philippe Trottet
Hi Kevin,
Yesterday W2 on 20m was 59+ on my area, 18:25GMT.
No directional antenna on my side due to local constraints, only a 40m
DELTA loop sloping 45º, top feeded with an 4:1 balun from Bob KZ5R
(LLC-balun design)...located on the top of a 32 stairs building, less
1km from the sea.

Hello Philippe,
There is an archive of old Elecraft Reflector email. I am sure
there is someone out there who can help you find the Iraq Elecraft Net
listing. I am unsure of how long ago it was but at least three or four
years ago.
Congratulations on your new radio. I am sure you will have fun with
it. From UAE you should be able to find a lot of nice DX unavailable to
me at this current point in our sunspot cycle. I have this really big
ocean to my west and south which cuts down on contacts quite a bit. If
we could make it a little narrower I could hit further into Asia more
easily.

  Kevin. KD5ONS

Hi Kevin,
I'm a brand new one Elecrafter and received my K3 last Tuesday.

The Elecraft net is also an useful tool to discover other Elecrafters
if they are enrolled on it.
Hope to contact you as well

Note:
As per the new rules in UAE, starting 01/01/2009 , A61 is reserved
for
Emiraties only, A65 for foreigners with a residency visa for up to

There was an Elecraft Net originating from Iraq at one point. You
may
wish to inquire about that or simply start your own.

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (11-8-09)

2009-11-08 Thread Phil and Christina
The net was challenging today with spotty propagation and a fair amount of
QRM. There were 13 of us, and we ran for 11 minutes. The only discussion
was a question to ask if anyone had a W2 up and running yet. No one did.
We did have Peter, ZL1PWD, check in from New Zealand (off the back of my
quad antenna)!

Following the pattern use by the Icom net, which has for many years been
on or around the same frequency at 1700 UTC all year 'round, the
Elecraft net holds to the 1800 UTC start time, so adjustment of local
time is needed in all but a few locales that don't honor Daylight Saving

The California QSO Party was providing lots of QRM around our regular

The group on 14.316 before our net time is always nice and leaves the
frequency by 1800Z. One of the regulars there, KA7GKN, helps keep that
happening. A very courteous operator.

Since 14316 is the 4th harmonic of the 3579 TV color burst frequency, I
think that it makes sense to move from that spot to 14314, which appears to
have fewer issues.

I didn't hear any noise on 316 today with my beam pointed NW from here in
AZ. Just a group of guys who were operating there and they even mentioned
that the Elecraft net would be starting shortly and that they wanted to be
off the frequency by net start time. Very nice of them but then again they
were Canadians and they are known for their courtesy. At least the ones i

The QRM on 14.316 is unlikely to go away, ever. This is the 4th
harmonic of 3.579 MHz, the TV color burst frequency, and a popular
choice for oscillators in all sorts of consumer and office devices (not
necessarily TV receivers). This has been a problem on 20 meters for at
least 30 years that I know of, perhaps longer. Also, because many
devices that use this frequency derive it from a square-wave oscillator
(a couple of gates). the harmonics of these devices are often
prodigious. Another considerations is that because some designs need
to have this frequency only approximately correct, it is no surprise to
find some units running up to a few hundred Hertz plus or minus from
3.579, and thus (after multiplication by harmonics) hams end up with a
broad band of QRM that can be 2 or 3 kHz from 14.316, or anywhere in
 between.

Are all these sources illegal, and thus covered by part 15 rules?
Yes, they are. This is part of what manufacturers certify on those
Part 15 labels you see on so many items of consumer electronics.
Technically, the owner of the device is at fault, and could be made to
cease and desist using the offending item. However, then we have the
real world. Identifying, finding and fixing what could be several dozen
such sources in your immediate vicinity can be and for practical
purposes is an unsurmountable problem. The FCC literally cannot help
you here, as much as they might want to. They have neither the budget or
time to solve literally tens or even hundreds of millions (no
