Re: [Elecraft] K3S PART ID

2024-06-04 Thread Keith Trinity WE6R

That is the E100719 bracket I designed to hold the KPA3 in during shipping.
Mike; I will send you a picture in another email that allows attachments.
There is a Philips pan head screw, 4-40 by 1/4 inch black just above the
ground lug that holds it in.

Search for that (no washer).
Anyone else can email me, my first name at elecraft.com  for pictures
with instructions.
If installing for the first time, there are 2 lockwashers used as
spacers that must be removed behind the standoff.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S PART ID

2024-06-02 Thread Michael Carter via Elecraft
I checked the interior of my K3 with the
new KPA3A 100 watt PA module installed.
There is an L-shaped hold-down bracket on the rear
edge of the KPA3A board, which is secured
to the rear fan panel with a single screw
(not visible from the top opening of the case).
It matches the dimensions of the bracket
you found.

I believe its function is to keep the two
connecting pin headers fully inserted,
especially after shipping/travel.
However, I can't find mention of it in the
KPA3A installation manual, nor is there
an errata sheet for that manual on the
Elecraft web site. I can't recall if the
installation manual that came with my
KPA3A module also had a paper note
regarding that bracket.

If the bracket was free-floating inside
the case, it may also be that the nut/lockwasher
used to hold the rear panel screw in place may
be jammed elsewhere in the chassis - check
carefully!

Re: [Elecraft] K3S PART ID

2024-06-02 Thread Michael Carter via Elecraft
Hi Mike (K4PI),

I recall a bracket like the one you described
from my recent addition of the KPA3A 100
watt PA module to my much older K3/10.
I don't find mention of it in the KPA3A manual,
but my recollection is that it was installed
on the rear panel of the K3 to stabilize/hold
down the KPA3A module PCB. If I get time
later today I'll open up my K3 and see if it
is visible.

[Elecraft] K3S PART ID

2024-06-01 Thread K4PI.Mike Greenway
This is more for someone who built a K3 in the past and might recognize
the following item.. I bought a K3S and got it home and moved it around
I could hear something metallic tumbling around inside.  After
disassembly I found it down under the KPA100 module.  It is an L shaped
piece of aluminum with one side being 1 1/4 long and the the 90 deg
portion is 3/8.  The 1 1/4 section has a #6 hole near its top. The L is
3/8 wide...  I looked at the parts list for the KPA100 and could not
find anything resembling it.

I can send a picture of this if anyone thinks they might recognize it.

[Elecraft] K3S/P3 for sale

2024-03-25 Thread Dave Kelley via Elecraft
I'm parting with my K3S/P3 since I'm loving my K4 just fine.

I bought this one myself in December of 2016 and has worked great over the
years. I sent it back for a new PA a couple of years ago and it is 100+ watts
on all bands. I also had them align it.

It has the second receiver and a bunch of accessories. For anyone interested I
can email the original invoice...the list is long. I have the factory box for
the K3S for shipping.

For the K3S, the P3, and two speakers I'm <>asking $3200.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S trouble

Have you tried:
Pressing the XMIT/TUNE button. For TUNE you have to hold in down for a
few seconds.

The transmitter should then transmit a power output intended for tuning.

Second test:
Press the XMIT button, just a quick push. Then try the key.

The KEY jack, not the PADDLE jack, right?

> I am sure it is something dumb that I missed. Please any help out there?

Is MODE set to CW?

If so, and you tap XMIT, then press the key, does the K3 transmit a carrier?

>From the K3's user manual troubleshooting section:

"Can’t transmit in CW mode: (1) Make sure the key or keyer paddle is
plugged into the correct jack. (2) You must have VOX selected (VOX icon
on) in order to use hit-the-key CW. (3) You may be in SPL IT
mode, with VFO B set for a voice or data mode. Tap A/B or use BSE T to
check VFO B’s mode."

That's all I can think of.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S help needed

2024-03-20 Thread Fred Jensen
Make sure VOX is turned on in the K3 and that it is set for straight key
input ... i.e. internal keyer off.  If your K3 is properly configured,
shorting the RCA Phono plug that goes into the Winkey should key the
K3.  It is possible that you've got the Winkey configured for the second
[KEY2] port, but I doubt that.

Years ago, the small fire in the corner of the chassis would lead us
immediately to the area of the problem.  Not so much these days, but
remember, "We always assume the worst. It rarely if ever is."

I don't have time now, but tomorrow, I'll look up the details and reply
again.

Does the rig key and transmit CW if you plug a key into the rear-panel

Re: [Elecraft] K3s port isolation??

2024-02-02 Thread Andy via Elecraft
Hi Peter,

I still have 3 Systems (K3S, P3 Shack, Lab, Car) and like them, but today use
mostly FTDX101MP.

Typically what you can expect as internal port isolation is may be 40 to 50 dB,
mostly.

Some not so good antenna switches have similar isolation/attenuation. Good
stuff has 80 to over 100dB!

There is a frequency dependence (capacitive coupling , more critical at higher
bands)

Only in a Flex5000C I once measured way much better ant. port decoupling (over
100dB low bands, shielded strip line technology)

There are various relays inside the receive path of the K3S.

Depending on factory/design decoupling efforts ( design, layout, component
placement grounding/bonding, separation of contacts etc.) signals can still be
copied.

Estimation: 40 dB down from an RX S9+10dB (-63dBm) main port signal is -103
dBm=S4 (IARU definition: 50Ohm ,-73dbm = 50uV, 6dB/S-Unit, Asia manufacturers
mostly 3dB/S-Unit)

Moreover, did you isolate (ferrites, CM chokes) all relevant ports on your K3S?
Otherwise there is additional, uncontrolled crosstalk.

Sometimes it is also surprising/unexpected how much noise (EMI) is injected (
into RX #1/#2 K3S) by uncontrolled back-door coupling via the PS (13.8VDC).
This is not be neglected!

External de-noising of the Rx is important.

The typical shielding effectiveness of HAM Radio TRX chassis/boxes is also
limited (50/60 (70dB?) ,if reasonable)

Simple assumption: TX 100W inside =+50dBm @50dB shielding is 0 dBm (1mW)
outside …surface currents…+++ CM +++trouble? !!

I a first, rough assumption reciprocity should apply equally for RX situation

You are dealing with a Swiss Cheese Box 

Try also to terminate the empty/unused port(s) under consideration with a
small, shielded 50Ohm DL.

I hope this helps.

So I have a weird situation going on with my K3s. First a bit of background:

I have been experiencing extreme powerline noise for years (this isn't about
that), so I've been looking for ways of mitigating it on my end to at least get
useful signals of some kind on 80 and 160. I have a K9AY loop RX antenna and a
full-size 80m Inverted Vee at 65'. Tonight, I was switching between my Inverted
Vee and the K9AY loop with an external noise-canceller (WIMO "QRM

Eliminator") in line. It's somewhat effective with about a 30dB improvement on
the K9AY. But then something quite unexpected happened.

I wanted to see how low my noise floor was with this new device inline so I
figured I'd switch to an empty antenna port (ANT-2 on the K3s). As soon as I
pressed the button my noise floor dropped to from about -130 to -140 on my P3,
lower than it's been in years. But I was still hearing FT8 and the
signal-to-noise improved considerably. This is.surprising to say the least.

How am I still able to copy weak FT8 signals (and CW) with absolutely nothing
connected to the ANT-2 port? I'm talking about copying stations in A7, V3, CT3,
and west-coast US, not strong locals. I don't think I've ever had lowband S/N
that good before to be honest. What is the port isolation supposed to be like
on the K3s and is what I'm seeing normal?

Just to be clear, I disconnected my AUX antenna that I use occasionally for
diversity RX, and my K9AY and it was still the same. Only my Inverted Vee was
connected to the K3s. When I disconnected it everything dropped to nothing. Is
what I'm seeing expected behaviour? And this leads to a big question. With
ANT-2 selected for RX, (remember, there's nothing connected to the ANT-2 SO-239
on the radio) is it possible to select a different TX Antenna? I'd be pleased
as punch to receive in this configuration but it's not practical to manually
switch from ANT-2 on receive back to ANT-1 for transmit.

Re: [Elecraft] K3s port isolation??

2024-02-01 Thread Jim Brown

Hi Peter,

There are many ways in which noise enters our radios. Failure to do
proper grounding and bonding both within our stations and throughout our
homes is one cause. Failure to chase down and remove the dozens of noise
sources in typical US homes is another.

There are detailed Applications Notes on my website explaining how RFI
happens, how to chase and hopefully kill it, and how to do that bonding
and grounding. Your symptoms suggest that grounding and bonding is an
important part of your problem, but so is killing as many of those
sources as possible. While line noise is certainly a problem for many of
us, trash generated by electronics in our own homes and those of our
neighbors has long been an equally dominant source of that noise.

k9yc.com/RFI-Ham.pdf
http://k9yc.com/KillingReceiveNoise.pdf

Don't let the title of the last link fool you -- it's mainly about
grounding and bonding for lightning safety and to kill noise.

2024-02-01 Thread Peter Hall
Hello Peter,

I'm not an Elecraft transceiver user so I'll defer to others on the radio
specifics.

One thing to watch is that you're actually "seeing" the noise properly on the
apparently high s/n port. In other words, make sure the levels are sufficient
throughout the analog - digital chain in order to allow a proper s/n
calculation to be performed. Not ensuring that is a classic way of getting an
artificially high s/n.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S audio issue?

2024-01-08 Thread Michael Carter via Elecraft
Hi Dave,

By 'full output' do you mean on transmit or receive or both?
The SSB filters are physically the same for USB or LSB on
a given filter slot. What differs is the frequency offset
programmed into the TX DSP.

Check the procedure on p. 49 of the K3S Owner's Manual
to see what you have stored for the Transmit Crystal Filter
Selection, which is done on a per-Mode basis. It may
be possible the stored offset value has become corrupted
in flash memory.

[Elecraft] K3S audio issue?

2024-01-07 Thread Dave Kelley via Elecraft
Hi gang!

This problem seems a little strange.

I can get full output on my K3S on CW and LSB, but very little if I switch to
USB. On any band.

Bad filter?

I reloaded the firmware thinking there might be something corrupt, but no joy.
Here’s hoping it is something simple.

Ideas?

[Elecraft] K3s communications I/O failed - suggestions?

2023-12-22 Thread Dave Kelley via Elecraft
Hi all!

At some point my K3s stopped communication via the USB Port and RS-232 to the
P3. The USB shows up on the computer as active when plugged in. Both on
Windows and Mac. Baud rates tried at different values for the P3. Just no
communications. And, the P3 is pretty hobbled if it can’t get info from the
radio.

I just did a factory reset and still no joy on the ports.

Is there anything I’m missing? Or is it pack and ship time for the old girl?

73 and Happy holidays

Works just like you outlined. Also, I notice that the power out

Re: [Elecraft] K3s power level macro

2023-12-05 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
Is 17mSec not fast enough? When you hit the OP button on the KPA, it tells the
K3 to make the adjustment, and the power is very quickly changed. Same is true
when you go from OP to STBY, the K3 goes back to 100 watts.
I seriously question whether you can do things as fast with a macro and having
to hit a second button (besides the OP/STBY on the KPA.
If you don’t know about this, you need to give it a try.

Thanks for your suggestions.
Mike, I'm not clear "where" you are implementing your macro; perhaps you
are using the K3 utility. I'd like to avoid that and interact with the
radio directly. Jack, what I'm looking for is not different drive levels
on different bands, but switching drive levels on the same band
"instantaneously." For example, I'm chasing DX and not getting through

We thought about that when we designed the KPA500. Take a look at page 29 of
the K3S Rev A manual - "Per-band Power Control”.
You need to have the KPA500 communicating with the K3 through the Aux I/O cable.

It works amazingly well, no macros needed!

Re: [Elecraft] K3S Receiver Spurious

2023-12-05 Thread Michael Tope
Yes, I operate the station remotely, so there is a fair bit of stuff
attached to the rig including a Windows PC. There probably isn't a good
intentional bond between the computer chassis and the rig chassis. The
current setup is "temporary", so I never got around to bonding
everything to the copper bus bar that I have sitting around waiting to
be put into service. The plan was to do all that once I finish
remodeling the inside of the cabin where the station resides. At the
rate things are going, however, I should probably go ahead and install
the buss bar. "Temporary" is turning into years. That said, the receive
spurious seems to be new. I would have noticed it before if it had been
a longstanding problem.

I did move the Astron RS-35 that powers the K3S off my UPS a few weeks
ago. There was an issue where UPS output was dropping for no apparent
reason. It doesn't appear to be the battery which holds the reduced load
up fine if you pull the plug. I need to troubleshoot that further, but
for now it seems to be working fine with the reduced load. It is a
recent configuration change, so it's possible that the spurious is
somehow related.

[Elecraft] K3S spurius ?

2023-12-04 Thread Frederick Dwight
Whenever I see something suspicious on my spectrum analyzer or receiver, my
first step is to make sure the preamp is turned OFF and/or put in some
additional attenuation. 160 meter signals and BCB are often very strong (too
strong). Putting in 10 db of attenuation should cause much more than 10dB of
reduced spurious if it is simple overload situation. This is an easy thing to
try, but may not help you. Normally a preamp is not indicated for 160 meters,
unless you have a very small RX antenna with high loss compared to your typical
transmit antenna.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S VFO B doesn't change sub-RX frequency

2023-12-04 Thread Jim Kutsch KY2D
Hi George. Thanks for the reply. It’s not in diversity receive because I do get
different frequencies on VFO A and VFO B. Turning VFO A tunes the main RX as
expected but turning the VFO B knob does nothing. The VFO B knob itself does
work because it correctly changes things in the config menu. Holding SUB allows
me to tune the sub RX. I just can’t tune the sub RX with the VFO B knob. It
used to work as expected but now doesn’t. That’s why I thought a setting may
have been changed inadvertently.

Are you "Holding" Sub to turn on sub? If so you might be going into Diversity
and VFO A controls both receivers.

I can imagine it would be different on RTTY, but our CW operation from
Vanuatu from YJ0V/YJ0PD was quite instructive. One approach to decoding
the signals, all almost on the same frequency, and peaking at S2, was to
find the edge of the pile and listen to the one you could decode. Many of
the callers were quite savvy and would then jump to that frequency, making
that the new "center". And the process would repeat.

The thing about the rhythm (I mean this is a little different way than you
are using it here--I mean the timing) is that it is a very important
principle to use if many stations are calling you. Most of the crowd will
get the pattern and follow it. Without the pattern, things can quickly turn
into pandemonium. With the pattern, stations that don't hear you very well
can catch on and only transmit in the "window". There were always a few
that wouldn't follow, but the significant majority would.

So the DX station has a lot of influence on the discipline of the pile.
DIfferent stations would follow it to different degrees. JA was relatively
loud compared to US and EU, so if we were trying to dig a US station out,
one simple call to "us only" would clear up a temporary lull. No JA station
would call then--none. So then we would do that for one or two QSOs and
then open it back up to all callers. There was one EU country that I won't
name that refused to follow any of our directions.

One first we did was to provide in near real-time (within a minute or two)
an acknowledgement on our web site that we had worked you. Our club
"Prairie DX" was the first to do this. VK0IR did something similar prior to
that, but it was not near real time. We first did it in the Saint Pierre
and Miquelon Dxpedeition. This saved the kind of heartache that was the
case with 3Y0J where there were pirates and you didn't know if you worked
them or not until they were done.

And yes--you don't need a second receiver to work split. But it is fun to
have a different antenna feeding into each ear, such as your transmitting
antenna in one ear, and an RBOG in the other. Fascinating stereo effect.

Sorry for this being quite off topic. While one of the radios we had was an
FT 1000 MP Mark V, in retrospect it would have been nice to have several
K3S.

Some years ago there was a DXpedition to VU4 (or VU7, not sure). It
wasn't easy -- I was in California then. The pileups were tough and
there was lots of DQRM. So I decided to wait a couple of days.
Then there was a big tsunami, with tens of thousands of casualties. The
operators were not hurt, but it was the end of the operation.

It's always a good idea to work them as soon as possible.

You don't call ON the frequency of the last QSO (usually). But you start
there in determining the pattern.

In the TS-890, the RIT control can control the split TX frequency which
is displayed on the bandscope screen.  I typically use it, without doing
a TF-Set swap, to set my calling frequency.  There is much more in
working split that just hopping on the last callers QRG.  More often
than not, this is the wrong thing to do on CW.  SSB is usually different
because the DX announces their listening frequency, but you have to
listen.  Sometimes they spread the pile by saying up 5 to 15, but they
only listen up 5.

I remember many years ago an expedition, (forgot who but their leader
was the banquet speaker at Visalia the one year I went, and he described
this in his talk)  They were operating SSB on 14.195 and announcing
listening 5 to 10 up. But once in a while he would say, "Five to ten
up...pause...and 14.190")  Of course everyone would immediately start
calling up 5 to 10.  I called on 14.190 and worked him on one call.

Sometimes the DX has a rhythm; they move up or down some Hz after each
call. You need to figure this out.  But sometimes they simply don't.  I
remember calling my friend, Ned, AA7A, when he was operating RTTY from
either or both VP8STI/VP8SGI.  I called for about an hour while trying
to figure out his pattern.  I finally figured out that he didn't have
one.  I picked a QRG and stuck with it until he found me.  (I worked
both stations)  I talked to him later at a club meeting and he confirmed
he just spun the dial.

which swaps TX and RX VFO as long as it is held.  Sounds like Elecraft
does the same with the REV key.  Listen on the DX frequency, after his
CQ or TU press TFSET to listen to the pileup. Spin the dial to find
who is answering with a report, this sets the TX VFO to that
frequency, adjust up or down based on prediction of DX listening
point, release TF-SET and call after next TU.

TF-SET, an SDR based panadapter, and CW Skimmer all help me when
trying to work the big pileups.  With TF-SET held I can click HDSDR

A person's needs/desires depends on goals and resources (like real

diversity RX to be quite helpful on 40M and below during contests and

You do not have to return the QSL cards!  Yes, even the K2 will run

My how one forgets after a bit of non use - it gets worse with age!

[Elecraft] K3S Split Operation

2023-11-06 Thread Bob McGraw
SPLIT operation is easily accomplished with a single receiver K3S.  Five
easy steps follows:

1.  Select the band, frequency and mode of your choice as seen on VFO A.
  (that's the big knob)

2.  Press and release A > B button.  This sets VFO A and VFO B to the
same band, frequency and mode.

3.  Press and hold A > B.  Upon release of A > B button one is now in
the SPLIT mode.  You will observe the word  "SPLIT" just above the VFO B
frequency (right side)  and TX  above the letter B for VFO B .

4.  Adjust VFO B for the desired TX frequency.  (use the small knob)

5.   VFO A is the receive frequency.

That's it.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S Split Operation

2023-11-06 Thread Dave New, N8SBE
If you have the CW decoder turned on, you won't see the TX frequency
shown in the lower half (VFO B) of the K3 display.
Otherwise, the VFO B frequency is shown in the lower half of the
display.
When you turn split on, there is a little triangle flag under the "TX"
at the right end of the display that will point to the VFO B indicator,
showing that when you transmit, VFO B will control the frequency.
Turn split off, and the flag will point to the VFO A indicator again,
showing that VFO A will control both the RX and TX frequencies.

Hope that helps.

You do not need the REV button at all.

Just use the VFO B tuning knob to adjust your VFO B freq +1 or +5 or
whatever

Re: [Elecraft] K3S Split Operation

2023-11-05 Thread Victor Rosenthal 4X6GP
You can operate SPLIT, you just can't listen to two frequencies at the
same time. Just hold the SPLIT key. Then set VFO A to your receive
frequency and VFO B to the transmit frequency. You can temporarily
switch the VFOs by holding the REV key. When you let go, it switches back.

So when you are working a DX pileup, you tune in the DX station
normally.  Then tap A->B to put both VFOs on the same frequency. Then
you hold SPLIT to separate RX and TX. Then hold REV and tune until you
hear the guy the DX is working. Release REV and you will hear the DX
again, and your transmit frequency will be where you want to call.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S Split Operation

2023-11-05 Thread Don Butler
Can’t Work Split without dual receive?! WRONG! I guess I must be an old
timer now, but I know that there are many others who have done it the same way
as I did …. all that is required to operate SPLIT is the capability to transmit
and receive on separate frequencies … that’s what SPLIT operation is … and
that can be done using any of the following : (1) separate transmitter and
receiver, (2) a transceiver with an outboard remote VFO (or even a wide RIT,
XIT), (3) a transceiver with dual VFOs ( like a K3 or K3S WITHOUT subreceiver),
or (4) any modern high end transceiver with dual receivers. Most old timers
like me made it onto the DXCC Honor Roll back in the day using options (1) or
(2). It takes a little more skill and good luck but it can be done …. In my
case, most of my DXCC counters were worked SPLIT frequency using an old Kenwood
TS-520S with a remote VFO ….I could have randomly chosen a transmit frequency,
parked on it and repeatedly called blindly hoping the DX would eventually find
me …… but I rarely did that …. Instead, I did lots of quick switching between
transmit and receive frequencies and was often lucky enough to find where the
DX was listening …. Did it successfully over and over and over …. With just
ONE receiver.Ya, I use dual receivers and panadapter now and it is much
easier and faster …. but could still do it with my old TS520S if I had to ….

[Elecraft] K3s with SubRx For Sale

2023-09-15 Thread Joe Hoffman
I have a K3s with Sub Receiver for sale:

Options include:

2.1 kHz SSB filter (in addition to 2.7 kHz stock filter)

400 Hz CW filter

KRX3A Subreceiver

There are matched 2.7, 2.1 kHz and 400 Hz filters in the Subreceiver.

Someone could likely part out the Sub, Synth board, Filters etc. but I won't do
that to my baby.

This is a 10 Watt version, factory built. I am the original owner. S/N 11296.

I doubt there is a nicer condition K3s for sale out there. It has been
replaced with a K4.

Asking $2500. No returns for the usual reasons.

I could deliver it in person to the Cleveland OH hamfest next weekend. I
usually prefer face to face transactions.

I would also be willing to drive up to 100 miles from Zip 43440.

Joe, W8JH

Good to know that they're good quality, but I firmly agree with W4TV
that they're a great example of a "fool and his money" with EQ as good
as what's in Elecraft rigs beginning with the K3. Speech compression is
also pretty good in these rigs, especially designed for ham radio, so
outboard gear designed for high quality audio doesn't make sense either
-- they're designed to announcers and singers sound great through high
quality sound systems with 20 kHz bandwidth, not on 400 Hz to 3 kHz ham
rigs. That money would be FAR better spent on the antenna system!

Re: [Elecraft] K3s Receive EQ

2023-06-26 Thread Jim Brown
I strongly agree with Joe. Both of us have broadcast experience, after
that, I spent most of my life in pro audio. And I've been a ham for 67
years. Not to be interpreted as set in my ways -- far from it, I was an
early adopter of WSJT modes about 10 years ago. My only minor difference
with Joe is that I'd also do max cut at 200 Hz for SSB and 6 dB cut of
400 Hz. Agree, no more than 3-6 dB boost of the top two bands.

our purposes.

The K3 RX EQ maintains separate settings for SSB and CW.
I generally set CW to max cut for 50/100 and -6/10/12
for 1600/2400/3200 (my pitch is ~500 Hz).  SSB is set to
max cut at 50/100, flat at 200/400/800, +2/4 at 1600/2400
and -8 at 3200 (to roll off a hit of the hiss).

Those settings are not as "hard" as some would suggest
for TX EQ but seem to help.  For phone one could push
the 1600/2400 boost a bit but too much boost will do
more harm that good.

Jim, K9YC, pointed out the work AT7T labs did to improve intelligibility
over the phone lines. Fletcher & Munson did quite a bit of research into
this for the military for the same reason. Interesting reads.

Setting your radio RX EQ to reflect this would be a good start, if you
can.

BTW, any audio EQ unit can be used for RX and/or TX audio EQ. Audio is
audio.

Re: [Elecraft] K3s Receive EQ

2023-06-26 Thread K5WA
Richard,

If ergonomics is an issue for your "on-the-fly" RX equalizer use, why don't
you try button macros to make the equalizers easier to bring up for
adjustment? If you have a K-Pod, you could program a couple of its buttons
as well.

Maybe you can spend that saved $200-300 on something else if you can learn
to like the macro buttons. Those outboard solutions are primarily built for
rigs that don't have what a K3 has for equalization.

Good luck figuring out what works best for you,

Bob K5WA

I love my K3s, warts and all, but I want a way to tailor incoming audio for
better readability in special cases. Yes, I know about the built-in
function, but that's hardly comfortable for quick, on-the-fly adjustments.

Can you recommend/suggest an outboard equalizer, ideally 8 bands, that can
be used to tune the headphone audio only?

1. This unit would be entirely external to the K3s, so its output level
would have to be sufficient to drive headphones.

2. This unit would ideally be 9" by 9" maximum and 8" by 5" minimum,
dictated by the available placement space in my station. There?s lots of
wiggle room here.

3. 12 volts DC is available to power it.

4. An in/out (inline/bypassed) switch is essential.

Links to look at would be great.

Fingers crossed ? VISA paid up and ready to rock and roll.

Cheers

[Elecraft] K3s Receive EQ

2023-06-26 Thread Bob McGraw
Regarding "quick on the fly adjustments", I don't view an 8 band EQ as
one that would have quick on the fly adjustments.

Depending on your choice of sidetone frequency, the selection of RX EQ
frequency and amount of attenuate and boost would seem adequate.   I
agree with what Jim, K9YC, says about this.  In order, attenuate first
and boost last.  There is less phase distortion.

2023-06-26 Thread Curt Nixon
I understand the desire for an 8 band eq. These seem to have fallen by the
wayside except for some dedicated stereo rack mounted stuff. Parametric eq
is available on most small 4-8ch mixer/mic pre units like my little
Behringer
I use it for headphone audio line out and it has a built in headphone
monitor. But it is parametric not octave eq.

My apologies. The equalizers linked to below are for TRANSMIT, not
receive.

That's what I get for not reading thoroughly before hitting the 'send'

Can you recommend/suggest an outboard equalizer, ideally 8 bands, that
can be used to tune the headphone audio only?

1. This unit would be entirely external to the K3s, so its output
level would have to be sufficient to drive headphones.

2. This unit would ideally be 9" by 9" maximum and 8" by 5" minimum,
dictated by the available placement space in my station. There’s lots
of wiggle room here.

3. 12 volts DC is available to power it.

4. An in/out (inline/bypassed) switch is essential.

Links to look at would be great.

Fingers crossed … VISA paid up and ready to rock and roll.

There are only 2 possibilities for best readability -- one for CW, which
is to cut the bands away from where you like the Pitch, the other for
Voice modes, which is max cut for the three lowest bands, 6 dB cut of
the fourth (400 Hz center), and 3-6 dB boost of the two top bands. This
favors the part of the spectrum that makes the greatest contribution to
speech intelligibility and minimizes that parts (below 400 Hz) that
don't. This is nothing new -- AT Bell Labs, probably the greatest
engineering institution on the planet for most of the 20th century,
figured out the science of this in the earliest days of telephony.

Welcome to the same issue I have had since last August.
If you hook up the radio to a powered PC or laptop USB jack, does the problem
go away?  On K3S 10176 it does.  Still setting PTT-KEY to anything but OFF-OFF
with USB disconnected should not light the TX front panel lamp or go full power
key down.

[Elecraft] K3S, N1MM and DTR/RTS to send CW

2023-06-20 Thread Bill Lederer
Team:

Our club has used N1MM for past field days with K3s using DTR RTS settings
in the radio and in N1MM to send CW.

I am trying this with my K3S with a laptop from Field Day, and get errors
whenever i set PTT-KEY to anything but the default. Additionally, some of
these cause steady key down or steady PTT conditions.

I'm connecting (as we did last year) via USB cable. N1MM is reading the
radio ok--it shows the frequency changing when I move the frequency knob on
the radio.

Is the K3S different in this regard?

Re: [Elecraft] K3S dead.

2023-04-25 Thread Michael Carter
Hi OM,

I would first disconnect anything connected to the
rear panel ACC connector - pin 8 may inhibit
the PWR_ON signal. If nothing is connected
to the ACC jack, I would try temporarily grounding
the end of R77 (the other end attaches to pin 4
of Q2), which is the /PWR_ON signal. If that
fails to power up the rig, you likely have a bad Q2
MOSFET. There is a possibility that a problem
downstream of Q2 is preventing its drain terminal
from coming up at PWR_ON, but I would
see if you can force /PWR_ON to ground to
open Q2's channel.

If a forced /PWR_ON does turn on the radio,
then you'll need to look at the KIO3B module
and the Front Panel board. I traced this circuit
out just recently, but I can't recall the precise
path from the front panel POWER switch to
the active circuitry..will look back at another
email on this issue.

Mike, K8CN

Jim,

Not a good idea, because any TX EQ, Compression, etc. will effect your
FT8 transmit audio.

Using DATA A will shut off all that automatically for audio data modes,
making your signal much cleaner.

I have MIC+LIN set to off, I think so that the K3s doesn't pick up
room noise when using data modes.
Also, the mic level control on the front panel affects the line in
level when you are in data a mode. In other modes, it is a mic level,

Hope that helps,

Dave,
I have been using my K3S in USB mode for FT8 for many years and never had a

Re: [Elecraft] K3S Line in not working.

2023-04-16 Thread Richard Ferch
A potential explanation: the LINE IN level may have defaulted to zero.

The LINE IN level is adjusted using the MIC gain control, but only when MIC
SEL is set to LINE. So, you need to set MIC SEL to LINE (which turns
MIC+LIN off), adjust the MIC gain control to give the desired non-zero LINE
IN level reading, then if you really want to use MIC+LIN on, set MIC SEL
back to your chosen mic setting and set MIC+LIN to ON.

For FT8, it would make more sense to set MIC+LIN to OFF and MIC SEL to
LINE. The MIC SEL and MIC+LIN settings are remembered separately in SSB and
DATA modes, so by using DATA A mode for FT8 you can avoid the need to
change settings back and forth as you change operating modes.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S Line in not working.

2023-04-16 Thread Mark Musick
Jim and Dave,
My K3S when in DATA mode, the MIC+LIN says "not APPL".
Jim you must not be in DATA mode. You have to be in DATA mode to use the
internal sound card for FT8.
I got my K4D a year ago so it has been a while since I worried about such
things.

Jim,

I have MIC+LIN set to off, I think so that the K3s doesn't pick up room noise
when using data modes.
Also, the mic level control on the front panel affects the line in level when
you are in data a mode. In other modes, it is a mic level, instead.

Hope that helps,
