Re: [Elecraft] newbie kx3 question

2018-12-12 Thread Don Wilhelm

Rick,

If the ATU has already been tuned to that frequency and antenna, you may
not hear any clicks. The ATU remembers the proper L and C values and
changes to them as you change frequency.
Then when you push the ATU TUNE button, the KX3 see an already low SWR
and simply exits.

Change the antenna, and you will hear clicking.

Is the ATU enabled in the settings menu? Page 14 of the KX3 User's guide,
right hand column, about half way down the page: The ATU MD menu entry must
be set to AUTO mode.

Yes, you will hear lots of clicking and whirring as the internal relays
select the right LC values.

I am waiting for my kx2 to arrive. I am delighted at the energetic and

While waiting I was wondering - is there and option to use the kxa10 100
watt amp in the future with the kx2 if I wanted too?

If so, how much battery power would the kxa10 and optional ATU require for a
portable hike type operation? I realize it's more weight, I am just curious
to explore what's possible.

The KXPA100 should work fine with your KX2.

At 13.8 V, the KXPA100 typically uses 20 Amps. Add that to the 1 or 2 Amps
needed by the KX2.

Re: [Elecraft] Newbie question... AGAIN!

2016-10-23 Thread Don Wilhelm

Emory,

There are plenty of references in the manual to the OFS/B knob.
Unfortunately, those are masked to a search of the .pdf of the manual
because they are images in the manual.

See page 12 (last column) for the definition of the OFS/B knob.
The use of the UFS LED is in the RIT and XIT text on page 16 - similarly
the VFO B shows use of the B LED on page 16.

Also see pages 5 and 23 for the use in Special VFO B displays.
Page 5 indicates that the VFO/B knob is used to scroll through the menu
entries.

Use of the knob for selecting data submodes is on pages 27 and 28.
Use of the knob for Text Decode is on page 29.

I may have missed a few of the references to the OFS/B knob images or
the OFS and B LEDs, but the above are a few of them.

OFS is an abbreviation for OFFSET.

Re: [Elecraft] Newbie still looking for a friendly face in Orlando with a K3S

2015-11-22 Thread Don Wilhelm

David,

I am not in that area, and cannot give you hands-on assistance, but if I
can help via email, I am willing to do that.
Take it off-list and email me direct (delete [Elecraft] from the subject
line). I will be on vacation this next week, but I will have email. I
may not be instantly responsive, so a bit of patience may be required
until I can get to my emails.

The K3S can be operated with the default settings and will perform well,
so just turn it on and operate. The real "rub" comes in for adjusting
the mic gain and other such things. The manual covers those items quite
nicely, but you have to know what microphone and whether it needs bias
or not. Those are the subtle things that cannot be covered in the
manual because there are so many variations.

[Elecraft] Newbie question re digital modes

2015-11-22 Thread Steve via Elecraft
I think I may just be overcome by an embarrassment of riches. I have
recently acquired a K3 and the serial to USB cable to run the utility
program.
I would like to try digital -- particularly PSK31 -- which I now do with
IC7000 and Signalink TNC. I have been using FLDIGI satisfactorily. My
question is whether (1) I should try to run FLDIGI with my K3 directly through
the RS232/USB cable, (2) should I get the cable and jumper card for K3 for
the Signalink, (3) should I get the "tridentate" cable set to connect with
the K3 using the line-in/line-out/ptt connections on the back?

An amusing side thing: I had my K3 tuned to 14.070 upper side band and I
booted up FLDIGI on my laptop with no physical connection between them. To my
amazement, I saw a waterfall display and, when I placed the cursor on a
nice strong signal, I saw decoded text. I can only assume that the laptop's
microphone was open and FLDIGI picked it up from the audio output of my
radio. Alternatively, it may have been an occult message to me that I need to
better  understand the mechanics of digital  :-}

Bingo! Internal mic. You need to be sure you shut that off when you wire it
direct.

I did a demo many years ago, when PSK31 was the new guy on the block, where I
had a laptop on one end of the meeting room for our ham club and the receive
audio source on the other end. It copied perfectly, even with the room
acoustics.

I suggest connecting the radio to the computer via the single USB
cable. It handles the audio and the radio commands for CAT control.
The SignaLink USB is not needed nor preferred in this case. Configure
the FLDIGI application through the various menus in the software for the
radio using the HAMLIB menu in the application.

Yep, assuredly he receiver audio was being heard by the mike in the

Re: [Elecraft] Newbie question re digital modes

2015-11-22 Thread Don Wilhelm

Steve,

There are many possibilities - my personal recommendations are below:

Your computer likely has a soundcard - to give data modes with the K3 a
try on the K3, just use two stereo cables between your computer and the K3.
Computer Line Out to K3 Line In, and K3 Line Out to the computer Line In
(or mic in). If your computer has only Mic In, look in the soundcard
properties window to see if you can set that input for line level.
Tell Fldigi to use that internal soundcard. The K3 and K3S have
galvanic isolation built in, so there is no real need for an isolated
interface box.

Turn off Windows Sounds so you do not play those over the air.
Use VOX on the K3. With data modes, there is no concern about ambient
room noise triggering the VOX.

After experimenting with that setup, decide whether you want to use your
existing SignaLink with the K3 or whether you want to buy another
external USB soundcard - compare the cost of the USB soundcard vs. the
K3 cables for the SignaLink. Many adequate soundcards are available at
low prices. Look at Amazon and Ebay for example, most any soundcard
will do for data modes.

If you have aspirations about using the K3 and LP-Pan for panadapter use
(in lieu of the P3) then get a USB soundcard that will do that job - 24
bits and a 192kHz rating with a low noise figure (see the soundcards
listed at www.telepostinc.com) instead of the low price soundcard. By
switching the audio cables, you can use that soundcard for both data
modes and the panadapter application.

Re: [Elecraft] Newbie question re digital modes

2015-11-22 Thread Don Wilhelm
The question involved the K3, not the K3S. In the K3, there is an
RS-232 port rather than a USB connection - no soundcard in the K3 - at
least until the KIO3B option is available, and then more confusion will
be present and will result in asking if the owner has the KIO3B or the
K3 original KIO3.

Your answer is correct for the K3S, but not for the K3.
The fact that he specified a USB to serial cable instead of just a USB
cable tells me that he has a K3.

He said, "K3" and "Serial to USB". There is no audio on the serial port of a K3.

A K3S USB is a different story.

Steve, use the K3 Audio In/Out into the sound card of your computer directly.

Re: [Elecraft] Newbie question re digital modes

2015-11-22 Thread Edward R Cole
I run FLdigi to my K3 via two stereo audio cables (spkr out to K3
line-in; line-in to k3 line-out) and a RS232/USB conversion cable for
controlling PTT on the K3. I use an external souncard with manual
level adjustments (knobs) which I find handy over getting dialog
windows in the computer to make level adjustments. I also run
WSJT10, WSPRx, and MAP65 so levels are different with each sw.

I am able to run all the FLdigi modes including CW, which I prefer
keyboarding when involved in CW-eme as I can set up special scripts
to send. Most used digital mode is psk-31.

Is there a simple way to get back to the default configuration on a

Number two, is their a downloadable program - not necessarily free - that will

It is easy:
1.You can reset everything by the following:

  Power off
Hold in shift knob while pressing power on switch unit it fully powers
up

You will have to start over again just like you had just finished
building it - so don't so this just for grins

If you have an older configuration file saved you can reload it and be
right back where you were when you saved the file. The firmware
is not affected either way - kinda like a restore point in Win XP.

2.The K3 utility program available FREE on their webste will do all
that.
I would suggest that once you do a reset as above save it with the
utility program so you can always undo what you done did

Dave -

Do you feel up to building a kit? The K2 is a good radiofor this
experience. You can start small, with the 10-15 watt base CW only
transceiver, adding modules and functions (SSB, noise blanker,
automatic antenna coupler, 100-watt amplifierstage, etc.) as time and
budget permit. But the important thing is, the K2 doesn't give away
much of anything to bigger (and more costly) units. Its performance is
top notch (verified by any number of test reports from professional
labs), and it hasthe distinct advantage of being a rig that the average
ham can still fix by himself. Add to that the world class technical and
factory support, and you've got a winner. I am sure may others on this
reflector will agree.

If you don't feel up to a kit, there are even fellows on here that will
build it for you for a nominal fee, and the end result is a truly
professional job.

Re: [Elecraft] ELECRAFT Newbie

2014-06-25 Thread Don Wilhelm

Dave,

For portable QRP operation, I would suggest that the KX3 is the optimum
solution.
It is all-mode, 160 through 6 meter coverage, and is rated at the top of
the Sherwood listing for receive performance. It is available either
factory built or as a no-solder kit.

If that is out of your current radio budget, then I would suggest the K2
as the 2nd choice. Yes, it is a kit that you need to assemble from the
basic resistors, capacitors, ICs and transistors. The basic K2 covers 80
thru 10 meters, CW only, but options can be added for 160 meter
coverage, SSB, automatic antenna tuner, as well as other functions such
as the noise blanker and either audio DSP or an audio filter. Even
though it is a 15 year old design, it is still rated quite high on the
Sherwood listings. The nice thing about the K2 is that you can build
the basic K2 and add options as your ham budget recovers later.

All Elecraft transceivers have a built in keyer.

I would have suggested the K1, but you specified SSB operation and 80
meters. The K1 will do 80 meters, but that band must be built on a 2
band board. There is a 4 band board available, but it covers 40, 30, 20
and your choice of 17 or 15 meters.

[Elecraft] Newbie Dave Happy New Year Elecraft KX3 WOW moment!

2014-01-01 Thread Esquer Dave
Hi folks,

Newbie Dave, K6WDE, here with my KX3 WOW moment.

Late yesterday afternoon, New Year’s Eve, I spotted and heard KC4AAA
broadcasting on 20 meters from the AMUNDSEN-SCOTT SOUTH POLE STATION.

Obviously, there was a hugh pile-up for quite some time. I listened and
listened. There were lots of big guns repeatedly calling to/over him and
others. Some folks got through. This South Pole operator’s patience was truly
amazing. He was cool and collective and took his time to work those that got
through. He was a total professional in my book moving quickly through the pile
up. I tried calling, but with the big guns, there was no joy.

After dinner, I tuned in again and he had decided to move to calling by the
numbers. He worked the 4s, 5s and finally 6s.

Throwing out my call sign, imagine my surprise when he answered back with a 55
signal report. I informed him of my QRP station and we exchanged 73s and Happy
New Year greetings. I was the last 6 he picked up before he moved onto the 7s.
Other comments from operators stated they had waited for 2 hours plus to make
the QSO.

I have owned my KX3, serial number 4599, since June of 2013. My setup is
simple, my KX3 and a switchable LNR vertical/inverted-L 66’ EFHW and a
horizontal 51’ long wire with a 9:1 Balun Design UNUN. I picked up the SP on
the horizontal. I am fortunate, I do live at 6,200 feet on a ridge overlooking
the SoCal inland empire.

My Elecraft is the one and only HF rig I own. Elecraft equipment rocks, one
happy newbie customer and HF operator here!

Happy New 2014 all,
Dave, K6WDE

Re: [Elecraft] Newbie ....

2012-11-25 Thread Sandy
NO! You can remove the 40-15 board and then plug the 80/17 board in and
replace the KAT1 tuner. Don't forget the reprogram the two new bands and
you are in business. If you need to work anything on 40 thru 15, then you
have to change the RF board again and reprogram the CPU again for the new
4 bands again. The reprogramming instructions are in the user's manual and
easy to do after you do it once or twice.

I have a K1 that has two extra 2 band boards. One covers 160 and 80, and
one that covers 80 and 40. The 80/40 band is the board that usually gets
used most. My 4 band board is setup for 40, 30, 20, and 15 like yours. You
will enjoy the K1 very much. I didn't get the internal battery option
because I didn't like the smaller loudspeaker. I usually have a 10 battery
box for 2 ampere/hour NiMH cells externally'

Have fun!

Yes it is, if you change the 4-band modul with the 2-band modul. There is no

Right...good points. I ordered the module needed to support either the P3 or
the LP-PAN, but I didn't make the final decision just yet. But still, the
LP-PAN wouldn't be a bad way to go for less money, and then just add the
monitor to another video card. The monitor would be needed for the P3 anyway,
and I have an extra video card. So a guy might just try it with the LP-PAN at
first, and then upgrade to the P3 later, if the spirit moves him...
Thanks for the post.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft newbie considering K3 vs KX3

2012-10-20 Thread Gary K9GS
Hello Tom,

I went back and forth on this toobuy a P3 and SVGA adapter or an LP-Pan.

I finally decided to go the P3 route for several reasons:

1) It's self contained and I don't have to tie up the shack computer
running another application. I already have two monitors on the shack
PC and screen real estate is already an issue sometimes. Putting LP-Pan
into that mix just complicates things too much.

2) The LP-Pan requires a high end sound card for maximum performance.
I'd have to add the cost of that into the equation.

3) My shack computer is more than adequate for ham radio purposes,
logging program, telnet for packetcluster, etc. If I went the LP-Pan
route, however, I'd probably need to upgrade the computer. That's a big
additional expense and headache just to use the LP-Pan. If you throw
digital modes into the mix, say for a RTTY contest, you're putting a lot
of processing burden on one computer.

4) Several friends have K3's and P3's and they rave about themthe
integration with the K3 is flawless.

So, I plan on buying a P3, SVGA adapter and a big dedicated monitor in
the near future. In the end you have to decide and do what's best for
your particular situation.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft newbie considering K3 vs KX3

2012-10-20 Thread tom betka

Dwight (NS9I) showed me his LP-PAN set-up this past week, and it's very nice
indeed. I would have absolutely no problem going with that either. I was
advised by David at Elecraft that the K3 module needed (I forgot the part
number) is needed regardless if you go with the LP-PAN or the P3 itself...so I
figured that I really couldn't go wrong either way. So I just ordered the
module for the K3 and will install it. I have a Mackie 1640 Onyx firewire sound
board, and that will work just fine as a sound interface. So either way, I'm
good. I just have bigger fish to fry right now, with the radio itself and then
installing a zero-five 30' flag pole antenna in the yard and running the coax
and ground radial system. The P3 vs LP-PAN contest will have to wait a couple
months, lol.
The P3 looks brilliant though, with that external monitor. Very impressive
indeed!

One suggestion: you may want to consider the P3 (and if you really want the
big screen, include the P3SVGA) instead of the LP-PAN. I assembled the
K3/100 and P3 combo a couple of weeks ago and all I can say is, I was
  blind
and now I see. The nice thing about the P3 is that it feels like an
extension of the K3 and vice versa. Its not like the P3 controls are
  trying
to replace those on the K3 front panel, they merely augment them -- very
  smooth and intuitive.

I looked hard at the LP-PAN alternative and decided that I wanted to keep
  my
PC for logging and spotting -- not for controlling my radio. I am very
  pleased with my K3 - P3 setup!

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft newbie considering K3 vs KX3

2012-10-19 Thread tom betka

Thanks to all who responded to my thread earlier this week. With your help
(especially Dwight, NS9I whose incredible shack I visited the other day), and
after a few conversations with David Shoaf at Elecraft, I have decided on a K3.
I finalized and placed the order today for the K3/100 unit, along with the
internal antenna tuner and the IF module so that I can use an LP-PAN and
external monitor. All that is left now is to arrange transfer of the funds, and
the thing should get shipped to me next week...with luck. I have a few things
to do on my end anyway, as I don't even have an antenna mounted yet. So it will
be a couple weeks before I am on the air anyway--but I'll get there soon
enough. I have waited 8-10 years to get back into HAM radio, so another
couple of weeks isn't the end of the world by any means.
On another note, I recently received a set of the Gordon West Extra Class
course materials, and have started studying for the upgrade. I've been studying
electronics for the past month or two anyway, so with any luck I'll get
prepared for the Extra class upgrade by the end of the year as well.
Anyway, just wanted to again say thanks for all the opinions rendered by you
folks. This newsgroup (reflector) is an excellent resource, and I plan to keep
hanging out and learning!

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft newbie considering K3 vs KX3

2012-10-17 Thread tom betka

I think that paddle might be affordable as well. Once I get the radio up and
going with an antenna here, then that would be the next step. The stuff I was
talking about was a paddle from Elecraft, and a couple of the other filters as
recommended on their site. I could indeed afford the antenna tuner and the 100w
amp in the initial purchase, although not much more than that right now. But I
think the list I provided would be a good start, although I would try to add a
2m module and a P3 in 2013.
Thanks for the post.

Hi Tom,

What are this CW stuff you are talking about below? If it is narrow roofing
filters for CW, then I think you can definitely leave these off until later,
and just rely on the K3 DSP filtering for now. I think the only thing you
really need to add to a basic K3 in order to do CW is a paddle. I suggest the
Bencher BY-1 is a good entry-level paddle that is inexpensive but works FB. By
adding the 100W amp now, it will be easier to make contacts and build your CW
skills.

If you are thinking of getting a K3, then grab a copy of Fred Cady's ebook on
the K3 from Lulu (it is cheap, especially if you use one of the readily
available discount vouchers).

I own both K3 and KX3.

K3 is mature radio. Works very well. But the design is a few years old.

KX3 is new radio with new design. Not mature. For instance, it has
capability for extra receiver + digital work out of I/Q lines, but the
software is not quite available or reliable yet. NB and NR are work in
progress. Speech processor is not yet as good as in K3. The contest programs
cannot easily send CW without extra hardware (with exceptions). etc, etc.
But with ALS-600 modified for low drive, one can add 600W to KX3 for $1k
(used price).

IMHO, KX3 will look much more refined in a year.

2012-10-17 Thread Fred Smith
I have thought about this for several days and considering what you want in
a radio at this point and being you will have but a single one starting out.
I think the choice is fairly clear cut and it would be in favor of the K3
because you need a stable platform for use at home and in a Motor Home both
easy for a K3 and it has 100w now when needed. The interfaces give you more
choices now than the KX3 and I think that your need for a total QRP portable
rig comes second at this time. It may very well be needed later down the
road for testing of some of your devices and software but for development
the K3 would be a plus in my opinion.

2012-10-17 Thread Edward R Cole
Tom,

I own both radios. I bought my K3/10 two years ago and have had a
good time running 12w SSB with it. Surprising many when I tell them
I am only running 12w. I can check into the Elecraft net fairly well
with that. IN the last year I have built a 300w PA kit and can run
270w out on 20m with 12w drive from either of my radios and that
makes my signal get thru every time. I should mention I run a
3-element triband yagi which does not hurt.

You will like the K3 for digital modes and should opt for it, in my
opinion. I got the transverter interface and second Rx along with
three filters for FM, SSB, and CW. I added the TCXO-3 and later the
EXREF for super accurate frequency. Those are important for some of
the narrowband digital modes like WSPR and JT65.

I am getting some experience with my KX3 mainly on 2m using a
modified 144-28 transverter (I added a PLL synth LO so I could
operate over the full 144-148 band by switching LO freq. and
installed a 13w RF module which drives nicely with 3w from the
KX3). Eventually Elecraft will offer a 2m transverter module and
100w PA for the KX3 which turns it into a decent mobile radio. The
K3 will work fine for mobile in a RV, though.

After having both radios I would not part with my K3. The KX3 would
make a fine starter radio had it been available when I bought the K3,
but the K3 shines for running 600m thru mw from home. Previous
radios were a FT-847 and FT-817, respectively, and the Elecraft
radios run circles around the old radios.

Hi Tom,
I'm still running a barefoot K2 (cw only) with an amp I can add on when
needed.
After reading your last post (below) I agree with you that is sounds
like good logic to outfit yourself with a radio that you can immediately
have fun with.
So the SSB mode and additional CW mode sounds like it would support that
well.
On the question of whether to have more than QRP wattage, I can only
relate that I love to see the K2 working a station barefoot.
However, there are those times when I've connected with a station that
I'm really excited about, and that station is struggling to get reliable
copy.
Its wonderful at times like that to be able to flip a switch and bring
up my signal.
I had just that situation the other night and the station thanked me for
turning on the amp.
It might set your wallet back a little on the temporary.
But when you have it, you may be glad you opted for the 100-watts up
front. :)

Thanks Phil...
I agree that the K3 does indeed seem like the way to go at this point,
and the extra $$ is probably money well-spent. But that leaves me with
another dilemma...how to outfit the K3?
Here's the basic order I came up with today. After talking David at
Elecraft, I added the 100w power amplifier which kicks price up $450.
But my question...is that really needed at first. I guess David's point
(which seemed very valid when we talked) was that I should spend the
extra money on the 100w amp, instead of some stuff for CW that I was
going to opt for instead. I have never really practiced much CW to be
honest, and would like to learn it. However David advised that it would
be more important to get phone up running, and working well--and THEN
add on CW in the future. After considering his advice more today I think
it's very sound indeed--and therefore was probably looking at this build
list:

Elecraft K3
item# item descriptionunit
price-K3/100
  K3 100W Xcvr. (Modular Kit) $1999.95(10w =
1549.95)KUSB Univ. Ser Bus Adapt.
$39.95KXSER K144XV Serial Cable free
MH3 MH3 Hand Mic$59.95
KAT3Internal Tuner
$299.95===
   TOTAL $2399.80 (10w = $1949.80)

Although it's a bit more than I was planning to spend initially, the
100-watt amp is an affordable add-on in the initial build. So it would
be do-able. For comparison, if I were to go with a KX3 and leave off the
CW components, the gear would come in at just under $1350--but of course
that doesn't include a 100-watt amplifier, as they are not yet available
for that radio. So it really isn't an apples-to-apples comparison at
all...unless you simply consider the 10-watt K3 build. In that case it
would be about $600 more for the K3, and I think it's been
well-established that this extra money would be well-spent given that
this would be my only HF rig.
Anyway, I'll hopefully be looking at Duane's K3 tomorrow if all goes
well. Then I can make the final decision after that, and get moving.
Thanks again to everyone for the advice. It's very reassuring to draw on
the wealth of experience that's so obvious in the users here.

contesting program to generate CW, and I discovered that N1MM is a powerful

circuit with just a single transistor and single resistor, which is pretty
easy. In the end I'll probably get a Winkeyer or similar, but the simple
transistor interface was a quick and easy way to get on the air and give
automated CW contesting a go.

Hi Duane,

Yes, I agree about the 100-watt amplifier option. A guy wouldn't have to use it
if it wasn't needed, but if it is needed it will sure be nice to have it. So it
indeed seems to be a prudent investment at this point, even if it adds more to
the initial cost than I initially planned. I guess it also saves the trouble of
adding it in later...

Matt,
Did you use a separate USB/serial cable? Perhaps, a third party will come
with one USB/serial cable that has extra wires, possibly with some small
circuits like yours, that do the radio connection, CW and PTT simultaneously
Rumlog does software CW with KX3 but I don't know how well.

Did you run KX3 standalone in the Oceania contest?

I worked in Oceania CW last year as VK2/NO9E. Worked some 180 QSOs in 2-3
hrs using IC7000+ long wires. Got up last Sunday morning (6 AM GMT) and
worked 15 stations with K3. Amp needed.

a contesting program to generate CW, and I discovered that N1MM is a
powerful program. To get it to work with the KX3, all that was required was
a trivial circuit with just a single transistor and single resistor, which
is pretty easy. In the end I'll probably get a Winkeyer or similar, but the
simple transistor interface was a quick and easy way to get on the air and
give automated CW contesting a go.

The K2/100 is a nice entry level station - good ears and a price point about
$900 less than a K3/100. I have both the k2/100 and a KX3. For the same reason
that Duane says, it is nice to have the 100w amp. If one chooses the KX3, one
can build a Juma 100w amp for about 420 euros. A fellow ham has built one and
it appears to work very well.

Yes, I agree about the 100-watt amplifier option. A guy wouldn't have to use

 Hi Tom,
I'm still running a barefoot K2 (cw only) with an amp I can add on when
But when you have it, you may be glad you opted for the 100-watts up
 front. :)

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft newbie considering K3 vs KX3

2012-10-17 Thread Mike Herr
Both are fine rigs, and you would be happy with either, from an
operating point of view. I feeling is it all depends upon what your
goals in ham radio are - what do you want to be able to do. If you
might be doing portable, hiking, DXpeditons, traveling and yes, in the
car, I think the KX3 is the rig to go. The K3 is great on performance
but the size would lose in the end. From a performance point of view
the K3 probably has a lead over the KX3 but I gotta say, I am
extremely impressed with the performance of the KX3 to date,

For me, the KX3 wins - because I can do so much more with it and I
believe I am not sacrificing performance wrt to the K3.

I do a lot of traveling and the KX3 is the ticket. But, if I were to
have just a rig for the house, never move it, I think I would still go
for the KX3.

[Elecraft] Elecraft newbie considering K3 vs KX3

2012-10-16 Thread KF9QL

Hello all, Tom here. I am new to all-things Elecraft and have been looking
at the K3 vs KX3 options. I spoke with David at Elecraft this morning, and
he was most helpful. He also suggested that I post here to ask for opinions.
I've also been searching the forum archive as well, and will continue those
efforts. I apologize in advance for a lengthy first post, as this not my
usual level of verbosity...

I have been a HAM for 25 years now, but inactive for the past several
years--and now getting back into things. I recently retired from practicing
medicine due to a medical disability, and have earned a degree in Computer
Science and started a small technology company out of a home office. My
current project involves a biomedical device that can work as a remote
monitor of a subject's status. Basically, I am trying to meet two needs here
I suppose: Re-kindle my HAM radio hobby, and learn more about digital data
transmission with an eye towards using HAM radio to help in that effort. As
my level of knowledge about electronics is growing daily, I have been
considering a build of either a K3 or a KX3. The radio would be used in my
home shack, but I would also like to make it somewhat mobile in an RV...or
even a normal auto. Obviously the KX3 is supremely qualified for this
purpose, but I think the K3 probably is as well. And of course the K3 has
much a greater potential for future expansion and capability. But to get
started, it appears that it is very hard to beat the features and price
point of the KX3.

So I guess what I am looking for is a bit of advice from experienced
owners/users on which might be the better choice for me? I understand that
the 100w amplifier intended for the KX3 is not yet in production--but of
course that will change. My intention will also be to add in a 2m module at
some point, and I understand that the KX3 module for 2m is not yet available
either. However again, these things will change--and one can always find a
small amplifier to use with the KX3 in the meantime. The price for a K3
build would be $500-1000 more than that for a KX3, but if this is my primary
radio...is that money well-spent at this point? Also, in terms of possible
research activities using digital data transmission, would the K3 be clearly
superior to the KX3? David told me about the accessory in/out ports on the
K3, which would indeed be convenient. However the size of the KX3 is very
attractive for possible field-work, so it has that going for it--and having
to use the main mic port is not the end of the world. But still, the K3
really isn't unwieldy by any stretch, so the size differential between the
two might not even be an issue at all.

Anyway, I would appreciate whatever advice folks are willing to offer. I
anticipate making a purchase sometime in the next 1-2 weeks, and have been
reading everything I can find, and watching every YouTube video I can come
across on either of these two units.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft newbie considering K3 vs KX3

2012-10-16 Thread Buck - k4ia
You are going to get a ton of answers but here's my take (and I own both).

It all depends on what you want to do. I would compare it to the choice
of a laptop computer vs a desktop or a 5-shot 38 revolver vs a 13-round
45 semi-auto. Either one will get the job done but they have different
pros and cons.

If you want a light weight, low power consumption rig that is really
easy to move around, the KX3 is better. It is perfect for hikers,
campers, backyard operators, battery power and all-around fun with much
better performance than the typical trail rig. Not so sure how that
will change once you add the 100w amplifier. I suspect it and the
larger power supply will be more of a desktop profile at that point but
without the additional performance of the K3.

If you want maximum flexibility, more power, more features you go for a
desktop. The K3 has become the standard by which all other contest
quality rigs are measured. Some of them are as big as suitcases. The
K3 is small by comparison but it is lunchbox-sized compared to the KX3
which is more the size of a VHS tape.

Either one is an excellent choice but you wouldn't want to haul a
desktop up a mountain and you wouldn't want to use a laptop to do high
resolution gaming, video editing or multiple DVD burning.

So, ask yourself, what do you want to do? Most will say you need both.

Absolutely. Unless you are looking for a trail/backpack radio, the
added flexibility, features and user interface of the K3 is hands
down superior to the KX3.

Also, in terms of possible research activities using digital data
transmission, would the K3 be clearly superior to the KX3?

Yes, with its dedicated line out and line in capability - including an
independent digital to analog converter for data out - the K3 is vastly
superior to the KX3 for digital work. Note however, I would not be
using any amateur rig for commercial experimentation as you will likely
want to be working at UHF or low SHF for the short to medium range
medical data communications.

While the features and UI on the K3 are clearly more extensive, don't
confuse that with it being a better rig for all but trail/backpack use.
Elecraft already has a rig that's probably better for trail/backpacking:
the KX1 (though it's not as full-featured).

The KX3 may still win for those wanting a:

- rig with a simple user interface and few controls
- rig to run as a base station on solar power
- rig to run in confined quarters (like my tiny shack...)
- vacation rig
- mobile rig

As many have pointed out, step 1 is figure out what you want to do.

For me, if the rig was staying put in the shack, the K3 would be the
answer. If I envisioned it moving about from time to time - camping,
vacation, mobile, trailer, etc... - then the KX3 would be it.

If you want to focus strictly on performance, go K3. But the KX3 is no
slouch. Buck's desktop/laptop analogy is a good one.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft newbie considering K3 vs KX3

2012-10-16 Thread Phil Hystad
Tom,

So far I think you have gotten some good advice and opinions but I would
add one more vote for the K3 as being the first of hopefully many Elecraft
radios you will own.

I own both the K3 and the KX3. But, I am still very new to the KX3, just
finished putting it together 4 days ago. I am still learning how this thing
works. And, I like this new KX3 as much as I like all my other radios but
if it came to a choice between the KX3 and the K3 I would stick with the
K3.

But, of course, owning both is far superior. The only real question after
you buy your K3, is what is next in the pipeline of Elecraft equipment.
A K3 by itself seems too lonely. Owning a K-line is so much better and if
you are new to all things Elecraft, a K-line is typically considered the
K3 with the addition of P3 (I think so) plus a KPA500 and soon a
KAT500.

However, no matter which one you get (first), you are not making a
mistake.

reading everything I can find, and watching every YouTube video I can come
across on either of these two units.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft newbie considering K3 vs KX3

2012-10-16 Thread tom betka

Thanks Phil...
I agree that the K3 does indeed seem like the way to go at this point, and the
extra $$ is probably money well-spent. But that leaves me with another
dilemma...how to outfit the K3?
Here's the basic order I came up with today. After talking David at Elecraft, I
added the 100w power amplifier which kicks price up $450. But my question...is
that really needed at first. I guess David's point (which seemed very valid
when we talked) was that I should spend the extra money on the 100w amp,
instead of some stuff for CW that I was going to opt for instead. I have never
really practiced much CW to be honest, and would like to learn it. However
David advised that it would be more important to get phone up running, and
working well--and THEN add on CW in the future. After considering his advice
more today I think it's very sound indeed--and therefore was probably looking
at this build list:

Elecraft K3
item# item descriptionunit
price-K3/100
   K3 100W Xcvr. (Modular Kit) $1999.95(10w =
1549.95)KUSB Univ. Ser Bus Adapt.$39.95KXSER
 K144XV Serial Cable freeMH3
 MH3 Hand Mic$59.95 KAT3Internal Tuner
 $299.95===
 TOTAL $2399.80 (10w =
$1949.80)

Although it's a bit more than I was planning to spend initially, the 100-watt
amp is an affordable add-on in the initial build. So it would be do-able. For
comparison, if I were to go with a KX3 and leave off the CW components, the
gear would come in at just under $1350--but of course that doesn't include a
100-watt amplifier, as they are not yet available for that radio. So it really
isn't an apples-to-apples comparison at all...unless you simply consider the
10-watt K3 build. In that case it would be about $600 more for the K3, and I
think it's been well-established that this extra money would be well-spent
given that this would be my only HF rig.
Anyway, I'll hopefully be looking at Duane's K3 tomorrow if all goes well. Then
I can make the final decision after that, and get moving.
Thanks again to everyone for the advice. It's very reassuring to draw on the
wealth of experience that's so obvious in the users here.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft newbie considering K3 vs KX3

2012-10-16 Thread Keith Heimbold
I am a new ham (22 months) and own both radio models (actually two K3s and one
KX3) and they are fantastic radios. However if I was to choose one over the
other it would be the K3 over the KX3.

For reasons already cited including modular flexibility and tailor-ability, my
built in 100W KPA100, multiple configuration with roofing filters that you
choose, real dual receiver, product maturity, light weight and smallish size,
and for ease of use for digital modes I would definitely pick the K3.

I use the KX3 in my truck and down the road i plan to take it on my business
trips that require more air travel. It is an amazing portable rig but I am
biased towards my K3s. They are a special breed of transceiver. The ability to
configure them to your operating style is what I think is amazing. Mass
customization is MBA business strategy material and something we talked about
15 years ago in grad school and Elecraft has mastered this concept in the K3.

Either way you go you will likely be very happy. One last note...when I come
home from a long week of business travel, I greet the wife and hold my new
baby, say hi to the pups, and then when they are all sleeping I head to the
shack to see my two friends K3, 1391 and 1526. And i know that all is good at
the Heimbold house.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft newbie considering K3 vs KX3

2012-10-16 Thread Bill Frantz
I have a base (12 watt) K3 and find 5 watts quite adequate for
my mostly PSK operation. With the sunspots the way they are, I
can reach the south Pacific on a good night. Narrow band modes
like CW and PSK work well with low power.

I spent my extra cash on the T1 tuner, the 2M option, the FM
filter, and the 250Hz filter. I also have the Elecraft cool aid
running in my blood so I have a P3 on order. My plan is to move
up to 100 watts when the sunspots die down. Right now I'm having
too much fun with QRP.

OTOH, I have had trouble being heard on the Elecraft SSB net.
But that's a wide band mode. Perhaps if I aimed my dipole toward
Oregon instead of Rhode Island it would work better. :-)

The choice between K3 and KX3 was easy for me. The K3 was being
delivered. :-)

Cheers - Bill

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft newbie considering K3 vs KX3

2012-10-16 Thread Matt Maguire
Hi Tom,

What are this CW stuff you are talking about below? If it is narrow
roofing filters for CW, then I think you can definitely leave these off
until later, and just rely on the K3 DSP filtering for now. I think the
only thing you really need to add to a basic K3 in order to do CW is a
paddle. I suggest the Bencher BY-1 is a good entry-level paddle that is
inexpensive but works FB. By adding the 100W amp now, it will be easier to
make contacts and build your CW skills.

If you are thinking of getting a K3, then grab a copy of Fred Cady's ebook
on the K3 from Lulu (it is cheap, especially if you use one of the readily
available discount vouchers).

Re: [Elecraft] Newbie

2012-08-07 Thread va3bxg
Based on the amount of questions and topics there is three areas of
questions/improvements/additions to the guide I would suggest updating, given
the admittedly targeting of new/lack of experience hams

1) Digital operations. The how. What cable to hook where. The method of
operation. Some of this In part, maybe outside the intention of the manual, but
there is still quite a bit that should be added. Just look at the questions
that are posted here and on KX3 reflector

2) The whole area of the AGC/filter/setup. (And this is really where the manual
lacks info for the new owner/newbie in my uneducated opinion) Again the number
of questions from both newbies and experienced hams make it evident that
information needs to be enhanced (true some people will never read the manual,
but at least one can be directed to it, if the question a raises) this is where
I am truly still having issues. Some hams here talk about the menu option to
decrease/increase the AGC yet us 'new' guys have yet the complete understanding
of what the AGC is supposedly doing and what the menu changing actual does.

3) Power. Now admittedly I believe that has been covered in the manual
appropriately. The questions still come. The differences between LiPo LiFePo4
as an example. I did ask the down to basic question and got some responses
which I am still trying to digest. But as a side note and a related topic (and
something that can be included in the new versions of the manual) is a section
on travel. According to current US and international travel restrictions, what
can and cannot be brought onboard. Yes they will change, but so will other
items in the manual due to upgrades etc. Questions have been placed by all
types of hams, on which battery can be carried on, side equipment etc. Again
this may be not the high priority on the contents of the manual, but a truly
nice to have.

I truly believe that number #1 #2 of my list should be included/updated
within the manual. #3 is a nice to have but based on the questions also
something to consider

And if it is not possible, what about a series of entries in the elecraft FAQ
(my second choice)

I will borrow someone else sig. Here and say

Ok back to my hole

Concerning your questions around AGC, Don W3FPR has written an excellent

2012-08-07 Thread Matt Zilmer
Hi Ralph,

The KX3 was developed to appeal to and be used by newbies as well as
experienced operators. The best way to learn the KX3 is with the
manual by your side. Follow through the manual's instructions slowly
and carefully, taking all the time you need for an initial
understanding of controls. Your first pass may leave you saturated (a
full head), but don't let this worry you. As you work through the
manual again (as needed), you'll gain a greater understanding. It
especially helps to tune in signals and use the recevier controls on
the signal to see what the effect is.

Wayne was very thorough with this owner's manual, and spent quite a
bit of time to make it easy to read and to reference. This doesn't
mean that you won't have questions; this forum is a good place to post
any questions you might have. That's its primary purpose in fact.

Don't worry too much about causing damage to the KX3 by controlling it
from the front panel or transmitting, applying power, etc. The KX3
protects itself quite capably from mistakes a user might make. When
it comes to opening the enclosure to put in or charge batteries, take
the care with doing it but overall it's like putting batteries in any
piece of equipment. It seems to be easiest if the rear part of the
enclosure is level on a table top.

It *is* a beautiful device, isn't it? That said, it's also meant to
be used.

In addition to those advices, you can simply send an e-mail here, e.g.
make the text Can one of you explain a newbie how to charge the
batteries? and make the subject line similar, e.g. [KX3] How to
charge batteries.

I would even send one e-mail per question.

I guess your battery-charging question has already been answered, or?

welcome to the list, and as a newbie as well, i really understand where

fr now to charge the battery, you must use an external charger (if you
are using the 8 AA internally)

and play with it, i don't think you can hurt it as long as you what is

Ralph,

I am going to assume the KX3, but you do need to specify the type in the
subject line for the best results.

The KXBC3 option is not yet available, so you need to ignore that part
of the manual. It will do what it says when installed. Note that it is
an option, and not required. Until that option is available, you will
have to remove the batteries for re-charging (also the clock will be
rest to zero when you power off).

Newbies are welcome right here - ask away, and you will usually find a
response in short order.

The KX3 manual itself has a lot of how-to information in it. I
suggest you sit down with your KX3 along with the manual and walk
through the procedures as you read the manual.

There is also a Yahoo Group for the KX3, but much of the information is
duplicated on this reflector.

Re: [Elecraft] Newbie

2012-08-06 Thread N5GE
Ralph,

I know the feeling ;-)

One thing that will help you is to put the name of the Elecraft product in the
subject line. Something like KX3 Need Help Getting Started will get you the
help you need.

When I got my K3 I was in the same place you are now, so don't be bashful about
asking questions. If the group can't help you with an answer, call Elecraft and
ask them for help. They are the most helpful folks I've ever encountered. No
kidding.

My suggestions are:

Set the KX3 on your operating table and get the manual out. Read it while you
get to know the controls. Do this a couple of times.

One of the things I do is keep a PDF file copy of my K3 manual handy on the
computer screen. For instance, if you need help charging the batteries, right
click the page you are on and look at the menu that pops up, then select Find
and you will see a small window open in the upper right hand corner of the page.
Type batteries in the window and click on the small right hand button on the
right of the window and see if the page with batteries comes up.

I don't have a KX3, so I can't help you with it, but maybe that will get you
started.

Good luck. You're going to love that KX3. You just received something special
from a special company.

I just assumed that there have been many others with these same learning
needs - thus a common function is to have a section dedicated to raw
new-comers so that experienced folks don't have to be bothered with novice
questions over and over again .Thus the general question - Is there a newbie
area in this forum

( example: when selecting the band of interest by pressing the band
button - is there a way to go backwards ? My guess is that pressing
another button or holding the band button might reverse the selecting
pattern - but searching archives so far has revealed no answer to a very
simple operation.)

Thanks very much .

Hi Julie,

I have not seen another list response. Perhaps you got direct responses?

The split mode is not necessary for a repeater. See page 29 of the
manual. I dial in the repeater on one of the VFOs, switch to FM mode,
then push the Alt key ( hold down mode key) multiple times until it
switches to the + or - offset I want. When I key the mike the VFO
displays the offset transmit freq then goes back to the receive freq
when I let off the PTT. Separately is an offset setting but as I
remember it was defaulted correctly.

The squelch on my K3 is the RF/SQL knob. Setup on page 53 or around there.

Get the ATU. For me, it's tuned everything my manual MFJ tuner would tune.
If you're interested in digital or CW, get a narrow filter - I'd say 400 or 500

Agree about the ATU, astonishing. If you use a multiband doublet, say, get the
atu.

Most folk advise that filters are only to needed if you are in a contest with
*very* strong signals or if you have a close neighbour with very strong signal.
If you are not sure about spending the money, try the K3 on your usual
activities then retrofit only if needed. Mostly, bringing in the attenuator
will do that job.

Re: [Elecraft] Newbie Questions for K3...

2009-11-18 Thread Matt Zilmer
Ditto - get the ATU. Very useful for non-resonant (er, non-50 ohm
feedpoint) antennas.

I run the ATU on a 160m dipole used on all bands 160m - 10m. No
worries. Just make sure the feedline is 1/8-wave on the lowest band
and the ATU will bring your K3 50 + j0 ohms.

I also use the ATU on a homebrew vertical for 40-30-20-17m. It helps
touch up the SWR just a little at the band ends.

Early on, I found that running the ATU in the presence of RF feedback
generally doesn't work so well. Just what I was taught (the K3 was
unhappy too). But the right choice of long wire length will let it do
its thing comfortably. Just make sure the feedpoint is reasonably
distant from the shack.

[Elecraft] Newbie Questions for K3...subreceiver module

2009-11-18 Thread Phil Hystad
Gang,

Thanks for all the great e-mails and answers to my first round of K3 questions.
Lots of good information and advice. I do have a few more questions but I
will limit these of one question at a time.

Several people have advised to get the sub-receiver option. Now, this really
puts me on the fence as I have a sub-receiver in my Icom Pro III and I almost
never use it. Actually, I have never used it in an actual QSO, I have merely
played with it from time to time.

So, my first question is, Why do I want a sub-receiver?...

Maybe a little about my background helps. I got into ham radio as a novice
(WN7ECQ) back in the mid-1960s. Ham radio was very rudimentary back then with
CW mode only, a transmitter and a few crystals, but a very good receiver
(Hammarlund, HQ-170AC). Then, after the Novice one-year license expired I let
the hobby go silent for 38 years. I was relicensed and back on the air in
February/March 2004 with a used Icom 756 transceiver.

But, my operating style reflects a lot of my Novice experience rooted in the
technology and practices of the 1960s. Mostly CW, some SSB for some of the
evening nets and other stuff when the band is hot and a periodically scheduled
SSB QSO with some of my ham friends from back in those 1960 days. Not much of
a contester but I very much like the technology aspect, experimentation, SDR,
and so on. And, I am always looking to do new things that capture my interest.

So, I may be missing out on a huge corner of this hobby by not even knowing how
someone makes use of a sub-receiver. Thus, my question.

Re: [Elecraft] Newbie Questions for K3...subreceiver module

2009-11-18 Thread WILLIS COOKE
Maybe you don't need the sub-reciever Phil, but I have one and I use it a lot.

Here is what I do.  When I am working split, I tune the DX with the main
receiver then push the AB button to get the same frequency into the
sub-receiver and press sub.  I adjust the volume on the sub and then when I
determine as much as I can about where he is listening from him, the jerks on
his frequency and the cluster I go  looking for a spot to call with the main
receiver.  I can listen to my transmit frequency to be sure there is not a QSO
on it while I listen to the DX and make my calls.  If the propagation is right
and I am lucky, sometimes I can find where the DX is working and get a little
advantage.

Sometimes when I am monitoring a dead band, like ten or six I sit one receiver
on the SSB calling frequency and one on the CW calling frequency.

The sub-receiver must not be essential because a lot of us were using K3s
before it was available.  But I sure like to have the sub-receiver and use it a
lot.

Ancient Age is no excuse.  I am 69 years young and been licensed since 1956.
My first rig was a BC-455 Command Receiver and a home brew 6AG7/6BQ6
transmitter that ran 35 watts input and maybe 20 watts output as guessed with a
40 watt light bulb about half brilliance.

2009-11-18 Thread Vic K2VCO
Phil Hystad wrote:

So, my first question is, Why do I want a sub-receiver?...

I use it for two things:

1) Diversity reception. I find that weak CW reception is greatly improved with
diversity.
For example, on 40M, I use a dipole connected to the main antenna and a small
vertical on
the subreceiver. When the signal fades on one antenna, it often comes up on the
other. And
the response to noise seems to be different in the two receivers. The result it
that far
fewer characters are 'questionable', and copy is easier.

2) Pileups. I listen to the DX station on the main receiver and the pileup in
the sub; the
K3 is in split mode so it will transmit on the sub's frequency. I have the K3
set up to
use the same antenna in this case, but I use a narrow bandwidth in the main and
a wider
one in the sub. I have set the K3 to send the main signal to both ears and the
sub only to
the left in this mode. This allows me to easily pick out the station that the
DX is
working and be on the right frequency when I call him.

This sounds complicated, but the K3 is designed to do this stuff (the antenna
setup is
sticky for diversity/non-diversity, and the channelization of the audio only
affects
non-diversity). Combined with the macro capability, it takes ONE button-press
on the K3 to
activate either of these modes.

But and However -- I hear that there is an extra degree of complexity and
rework to put in the sub-receiver later so if I think I might want it later
then it behooves me to get it up front. Now, I am still on the fence, it may
come down to the cost of the whole configuration.

Re: [Elecraft] Newbie Questions for K3...subreceiver module

2009-11-18 Thread Don Wilhelm
Phil,

Believe me, it is not much more trouble to install the SubRX later than
it is during the initial construction.
I think the biggest headache of adding the SubRX is routing the
cables. Some will say that removing the Front Panel to add the 2nd DSP
board is the hardest part, but if you have assembled your K3 from the
kit version, it will be easy for you. That feeling of difficulty is
natural for those who have purchased a factory built K3. One of the
advantages of building the kit version is that you do become familiar
with how it goes together.

I would even say that if you are mostly a casual operator (and
especially if you are working on a budget), you may want to order only
the basic K3 (plus KAT3 if you do not have all resonant antennas) and
operate it for a while before deciding on the additional filters and
options that you would like to have in it. Once the SubRX is in place,
adding filters to the main board is more difficult, so you ideally would
want to determine the filter set you want to end up in both the main and
SubRX before actually adding the SubRX - that is only my opinion, others
may (and will) differ.

I am not a K3 owner but I plan to be sometime soon. I am still in my research

have a couple of questions...

1. Are there options that I would be foolish not to get right up front? My
plan is to at least get the 100 watt option and I am seriously considering the

2. Are there any custom ICs or other esoteric parts on the K3 that might limit
its ultimate future repair life? I have already had an old Icom 756 be judged
passed repair do to the in-availability of a few needed ICs.

3. Is the kit difficult to put together? I have done a few easier kits, such
as the Norcal40A and a few other small things of easier effort.

There are no custom ICs. There is a custom LCD display, and of course
the cabinetry and knobs.

This is a no soldering kit. You do have to assemble the power cable,
and if you lack a Powerpole crimper then you have to either solder it or
order an assembled power cable.

Re: [Elecraft] Newbie Questions for K3...

2009-11-17 Thread Don Wilhelm
Phil,

I can try to answer your questions.
1) All options are easily installed. The hardest option to install is
an additional filter for the main receiver when the Sub RX is also
installed because the SubRX must be lifted to gain access to the main
receiver filter slots. Since you did not mention the SubRX with your
initial purchase, that would not be a concern.
2) There are no custom ICs used in the design that I am aware of.
3) The kit requires no soldering (other than the APP connector on the
power cable), so it is more akin to assembling a computer from a case
and motherboard and plug-in cards. There is the construction of the
case involved, but that is mechanical assembly, just follow the
instructions and use a good #1 phillips screwdriver. It is not
difficult unless your manual dexterity is poor.

Re: [Elecraft] Newbie Questions for K3...

2009-11-17 Thread Mike
Phil -
I put mine together a month ago. It's not difficult, but it is tedious.
It took me about 12-14 hours.
You'll need an anti static mat and wristband. I ordered mine from Radio
Shack (276-2370).

I got the 100W PA, ATU, 6M preamp and 2.8, 400 and 250 8 pole filters.
That suits my operating preferences, SSB, CW and digital. Consider what
you do. It's not difficult to add pieces later, and if you build it,
you'll already know how.

There is a learning curve associated with operating it to it's fullest,
but it's a really fun ride. Go for it.

I am not a K3 owner but I plan to be sometime soon. I am still in my
research stage where I want to learn as much as I can about the K3 before I
buy. I do have a couple of questions...

 1. Are there options that I would be foolish not to get right up front? My
plan is to at least get the 100 watt option and I am seriously considering
 the ATU.

 2. Are there any custom ICs or other esoteric parts on the K3 that might
limit its ultimate future repair life? I have already had an old Icom 756 be
judged passed repair do to the in-availability of a few needed ICs.

 3. Is the kit difficult to put together? I have done a few easier kits,
such as the Norcal40A and a few other small things of easier effort.

 Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] Newbie Questions for K3

2009-11-17 Thread Fred Atchley
Phil, you pose some great questions. Here goes:

1. The one option I would not get is the high accuracy oscillator.but
that's just me.

2. As far as esoteric parts are concerned, Maybe Eric or Wayne should
answer that one.

I had an Orion 1 a couple of years back. But it did not have an internal
tuner. At that time

There was no upgrade path, so I looked into the Orion 2. (Too expensive) but
then learned

That the manufacturer of the signal processor in the Orion 1 had
discontinued their part!

I don't know what became of that issue but I didn't want to become a victim
of passed repair.

I tried an OMNI VII for a few months but its receiver didn't measure up to
the Orion's.

That's when I decided to try the K3 kit and I have been totally happy with
it and support.

3. Assembly is a piece of cake, even for a 73 year old like me. There
is one caveat.

Protect your investment by using electrostatic pad and wrist strap.

Hope this helps. 73, Fred AE6IC

[Elecraft] Newbie question

2009-07-05 Thread Jim Bobo
My new K3 has no output. It is not in test mode. The sidetone is normal,
the receiver quiets when I key it but no output. Probably I've done
something wrong. TIA

Be sure you have either pressed the XMIT switch, or have VOX enabled for
the Tx to activate in CW mode.
