It all boils down to trust... You either trust your seller, or buyer,
or you don't.

You take precautions, (take a reasonable number of them, not going
overboard), and if you get burned you modify how you determine trust, or
you take your chances again.

Nice to know that this is not as wide spread as some ads I've seen would

The tape idea has another side to it, as a buyer I have a right to
inspect my purchase to assure that I received what I paid for. An
unscrupulous seller could attempt to use this in various ways for their
own gain as well.

At some point there has to be a modicum of trust between the parties.
I've inquired about equipment in the past and sometimes there is just a

2021-10-30 Thread Lou Mecseri

I am in a loosely similar situation.

I have a neighbor, who is a HAM and he will be in charge to de-comission
my modest K-line station.

I am looking into the possibility to donate the station to the local
high school under his supervision.

Thank you guys for making me to think and consider options about this
subject of dispensing valuable radio stuff in a socially beneficial manner.

For several years beginning around 2010, I had reasonable success
selling stuff for the widow of a local ham, for a neighbor ham who moved

local clubs, some at that Si Valley swap. The only issue was something

When doing biz with a stranger, whether an individual or a company,

I think it was started some years back and folks seem to think they need to
add it to their sales ad.

Personally, if I am looking for a piece of equipment and I see this little
phrase added to the blurb, I ignore it. My feeling is that if the selling
person is saying he doesn't trust someone, then how can he be trusted?!?
As others have said, it's a copout way of saying the seller doesn't want to
be bothered with returns.

YMMV.

This is of real concern to me. I have an accumulation of ham equipment,

It's not that I need the money... got plenty of that. I could keep
buying equipment the rest of my life and sluff off the selling job to
my heirs :). But that would be dumb. What's the use of having all this

That's gone for the moment due to COVID. Even the venue ( Fry's

The flea market was more than a sales venue - it was a community. I
would see familiar
people there. There was the soldering iron guy... the cables &
connectors family that came up from LA; Rik the cheap Chinese tools guy
who also had supermagnets. Mark the
CTO of Netgear, who would come up in his old VW microbus and sell
detritus from his lab.

He was an excellent source of wall warts.

At the flea market, what you see is what you get. Does it work? Show
me. You could

get a feel for the guy behind the table, person to person.

Anyway... selling on line to people far away - seems like a lot of
work. Have to pack stuff up, haul it off to the shipping store, freak
out at how much they charge, worry about parts swappers Maybe I'll
just wait till the swap meet starts up again in 2022.

Hi all,

I've seen a few K3 For Sale ads that mention "parts swappers". Has this
really been an issue?

It makes me hesitate to put my K3 up for sale.

Re: [Elecraft] Parts swappers -- is this a real "thing"

2021-10-29 Thread Dave
Some rigs are sold as "Tech Special". The ad indicates there is a
problem with the rig, but is not specific about that problem, and states
you will have to fix it. Now you can't return if it does not work, you
knew you were buying a dead rig...

What the ad does not say, is the magnitude of the problem...

Some folks will take several, (lets say, 706 MK2 Gs), that all have
major but different problems, and build one working "Frankenradio" out
of them, swapping every broken board into one of the dead 706's, that
706 then gets sold as a "Tech Special". This gets the Frankenradio
working, and the "repair man", saves a few bucks by selling off the
broken items.

The unsuspecting ham that thinks he may get a rig for 20% of new, and be
able to repair it, finds a radio that has most of the boards dead, and
the cost of repair is far more than the rig is worth. Worse yet, the
radio can't even be used as board replacements for a rig of the same
ilk, as every board will need to be tested, and most will be bad...

The poor ham that buys the Frankenradio has no idea his radio has been
pieced together with no regards to board mods, etc., from any number of
dead rigs of the same ilk...

I am always very careful of buying used rigs... I don't purchase full
rigs often, and when I do I assume it will be broken, no matter what
someone says, so the price had better reflect that...

Dave AB7E,

It is not a matter of trust, it is a matter of keeping my options open.
I assume all transactions will be honest, but I take precautions in the
event one is not.

I also won't trade with a person that refuses to use PayPal, either as a
buyer or seller. I will however purchase cash if I can see and touch
the equipment. If I can't get a set of clear photos, I won't trade, etc...

I have never been burned by parts swappers, but I am sure they exist. If
I refuse to trade with them, I guarantee I will never get burned by
one-- hence my attitude with regards to that subject.

Re: [Elecraft] Parts swappers -- is this a real "thing"

2021-10-29 Thread Hank via Elecraft
It has happened to me - not on a K3 but on a power supply.  I sold a perfectly
good 50 Amp Astron linear DC supply on eBay.  Guy said it didn't work and
shipped it back to me.

Before I sold it, I added 3 new MOV's as per an article on repeater-builder.
They were a certain color and size and of course I soldered them in place - I
knew what they looked like.

When I received the power supply back, I opened it to check it out.  I
immediately noticed the transformer only had a single MOV across the input
leads and it was discolored due to heat or age or both.  The transformer was
not connected on the low voltage side at all - the remnants of the old leads
were still soldered to diode/rectifier parts and appears to have been cut from
"my" transformer with dikes.  The cork pieces between the transformer and the
case were gone - I had added an extra piece to help with the hum - all gone.
This wasn't my transformer!!

Since the transformer was disconnected on the low side I plugged the supply up
to AC and flipped on the switch and the supply's fuse blew >:-(

I bypassed all of the internal wiring in the supply and tied the high side of
the transformer to AC and plugged it in on the bench - it blew the breaker on
my power strip.  So, I gave away my good working transformer to some guy who
needed it in his supply.

I made a case with eBay and the only resolve so far is the buyer was delisted
and they have refunded all of my fees.  The case is ongoing.

The  buyer was not a ham to my knowledge.

Re: [Elecraft] Parts swappers -- is this a real "thing"

If it is a real thing, I would have tripped over it by now.

However, if you are selling an FT101ZD with 6146B tubes in it, that might
be a different story.

My personal opinion is that it's not a real thing (at least not as enough
volume to matter). If it really bothers you, get some of those void
warranty stickers so you know if the radio has been opened.

2021-10-29 Thread Carl Jón Denbow
Tony: I think it’s just an excuse that some hams use for saying they won’t
accept returns. I’m sure it’s happened on rare occasions, but I’ve bought and
sold a lot gear on qth.com, and a few other places, over the years and I’ve
found the vast majority of hams to be honest. I have dealt with a few
scammers, but that’s a different issue. They are invariably non-hams who are
posing as hams. In all the time I’ve engaged in online trading of ham gear,
I’ve only run into one dishonest ham, but he seemed to be suffering from some
kind of mental disorder. If you insist on being paid via PayPal you’ll be
protected. That’s my two cents worth. — 73 de Carl

[Elecraft] Parts swappers -- is this a real "thing"

2021-10-29 Thread Anthony Wanschura
Hi all,

I've seen a few K3 For Sale ads that mention "parts swappers". Has this
really been an issue?

It makes me hesitate to put my K3 up for sale.
