It all boils down to trust... You either trust your seller, or buyer, or you don't. I am in a loosely similar situation. I have a neighbor, who is a HAM and he will be in charge to de-comission my modest K-line station. I am looking into the possibility to donate the station to the local high school under his supervision. Re: [Elecraft] Parts swappers -- is this a real "thing"
Some rigs are sold as "Tech Special". The ad indicates there is a problem with the rig, but is not specific about that problem, and states you will have to fix it. Now you can't return if it does not work, you knew you were buying a dead rig... What the ad does not say, is the magnitude of the problem... Some folks will take several, (lets say, 706 MK2 Gs), that all have major but different problems, and build one working "Frankenradio" out of them, swapping every broken board into one of the dead 706's, that 706 then gets sold as a "Tech Special". This gets the Frankenradio working, and the "repair man", saves a few bucks by selling off the broken items. The unsuspecting ham that thinks he may get a rig for 20% of new, and be able to repair it, finds a radio that has most of the boards dead, and the cost of repair is far more than the rig is worth. Worse yet, the radio can't even be used as board replacements for a rig of the same ilk, as every board will need to be tested, and most will be bad... The poor ham that buys the Frankenradio has no idea his radio has been pieced together with no regards to board mods, etc., from any number of dead rigs of the same ilk... I am always very careful of buying used rigs... I don't purchase full rigs often, and when I do I assume it will be broken, no matter what someone says, so the price had better reflect that... 73, and thanks, Dave (NK7Z) https://www.nk7z.net ARRL Volunteer Examiner ARRL Technical Specialist, RFI ARRL Asst. Dave AB7E, It is not a matter of trust, it is a matter of keeping my options open. I assume all transactions will be honest, but I take precautions in the event one is not. I also won't trade with a person that refuses to use PayPal, either as a buyer or seller. I will however purchase cash if I can see and touch the equipment. If I can't get a set of clear photos, I won't trade, etc... I have never been burned by parts swappers, but I am sure they exist. If I refuse to trade with them, I guarantee I will never get burned by one-- hence my attitude with regards to that subject. Re: [Elecraft] Parts swappers -- is this a real "thing"
It has happened to me - not on a K3 but on a power supply. I sold a perfectly good 50 Amp Astron linear DC supply on eBay. Guy said it didn't work and shipped it back to me. Before I sold it, I added 3 new MOV's as per an article on repeater-builder. They were a certain color and size and of course I soldered them in place - I knew what they looked like. When I received the power supply back, I opened it to check it out. I immediately noticed the transformer only had a single MOV across the input leads and it was discolored due to heat or age or both. The transformer was not connected on the low voltage side at all - the remnants of the old leads were still soldered to diode/rectifier parts and appears to have been cut from "my" transformer with dikes. The cork pieces between the transformer and the case were gone - I had added an extra piece to help with the hum - all gone. This wasn't my transformer!! Since the transformer was disconnected on the low side I plugged the supply up to AC and flipped on the switch and the supply's fuse blew >:-( I bypassed all of the internal wiring in the supply and tied the high side of the transformer to AC and plugged it in on the bench - it blew the breaker on my power strip. So, I gave away my good working transformer to some guy who needed it in his supply. I made a case with eBay and the only resolve so far is the buyer was delisted and they have refunded all of my fees. The case is ongoing. The buyer was not a ham to my knowledge.
