RE: [Elecraft] CW Mistakes

2008-04-27 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire

I'd like to add to the list of big mistakes:

Learning to translate dits and dahs into letters and other characters.
  Slow code encourages translation!
...

Rich
NU6T

---

Is that a mistake for most Hams?

It wasn't for me.

I am aware of many ops who want to QRQ at 30 wpm, 40 wpm and up. I have no
argument with them when they say that they must learn to hear words, not
characters. That certainly sounds plausible, as does the idea of learning
code as words from the very beginning.

Such extreme QRQ is surely an interesting challenge for those who pursue it,
but it's certainly not mainstream in Amateur CW operations from my
experience on the bands. (Sometimes contest exchanges approach those speeds,
but that's a different story. Every contact is very brief and predictable.)

Learning to copy individual characters at very slow speed sure did not
bother me. After over 50 years pounding brass my fastest comfortable
copying speed is about 35 wpm. I can copy 40 but it wears me out pretty
quickly. I don't try to send faster than 30 WPM but then I use a mechanical
key, either a hand pump for QRS or a bug for QRQ.

Across the range from less that 5 wpm up, I copy code in my head
visualizing a string of letters scrolling by in my head as I hear it sent.
It's kind of funny when I hear an odd fist on the air - someone who drags
out their dashes way too long and then uses very short dits, or who varies
their inter-character spaces a lot (like that link to maritime spark
transmissions I sent earlier). At first such code is gibberish. I see
nothing. Then, usually, after listening for a bit, suddenly my brain locks
on and the letters start scrolling by in my head. Then it's fine copy. It's
kinda of fun to sit back, let the code flow into my hearing and have that
suddenly happen.

I made transition to head copy slowly from copying letter-by-letter on
paper, as we used to do to pass our FCC tests and when receiving messages.

For me, the ability to send and receive very slow CW is an important skill;
one I use far more than sending or receiving over 30 WPM. As more and more
Hams explore the CW bands, I find it very common to run into operators
running at 10 WPM or even less. I want to reply to them at whatever speed
they are sending, as long as it's within my range.

Re: [Elecraft] Portable CW paddles for K2?

2008-04-27 Thread Dave Andrus

Kristinn:

I bought one of these recently, and have really been enjoying it:

http://www.americanmorse.com/portapaddle.htm

You can get it with or without the base. I bought the base, and was
glad I did, but you can mount the paddles on just about anything with
the two mounting holes.

I had to do just a slight amount of adjusting with some fine-grit
sandpaper and a drill bit, but I'm very pleased with the solid feel,
and the size is just right for me, with no real compromises in
performance. I've been using it both portable and at home with my K2,
and am very pleased with it. For what it's worth, I had to wait about
14 days for delivery. You may want to ask about shipping/delivery
times to your QTH.

I would definitely buy this one again.

American Morse is also the recommended supplier for a very nice CNC
enclosure for the Small Wonder Rockmite QRP transceiver. I also
ordered one of these, and am very pleased with it.

[Elecraft] K3 PTT in SSB with CW-Key?

2008-04-27 Thread Dr. Werner Furlan

I would like to use my CW key to key the transmitter in SSB mode.
This is very handy in the K2 when I use the Heil headset and don't want to
use the vox.
Is this already possible with the K3?
If not please put it on the wishlist.

[Elecraft] K3/HRD/MK...success

2008-04-27 Thread cx7tt
Tnx to Greg AB7R and Joe W4TV for helping me troubleshoot and finally
get it all going. The problem was, of course, methe cable bundle
that goes to the back of the K3 has a cable marked PC IN and PC Out. I
assumed that they went into the respective IN-Line-OUT jacks on the back
of the K3wrong...after swapping those cables everything works ok.
While testing ...sending CQ in BPSK-31 on quiet band, I made my first
ever contact in that mode...very cool, I think I will like this BPSK
thing. 50 watts to a vertical here in CX worked a 15w dipole in Tampa,
FL. Another thing that I must have missed in the documentation on the
DM780 is that it does NOT support FSK or BPSK-D. So must use AFSK-D or
Data...
Once again, the Elecraft reflector came thru...tnx guys.

RE: [Elecraft] CW Mistakes

2008-04-27 Thread N4OI

I began to learn code at 50 (now 56) and got my ticket about 5 years ago. It
has been a LOT OF FUN! The longest transition was from writing everything
down to copying in my head, but it was certainly worth the effort. I am
typically operating at about 25 wpm but try to slow down to match a calling
station's speed, primarily using Farnsworth spacing so I do not have to keep
fiddling with the keyer speed control. This approach usually results in the
other party sending comments like FB CPY ALL. But back to biggest mistake
for a newbie: not sending PLS QRS if I am sending too fast! This may be
because they are embarassed or whatever. Like Ron, I have no problem
slowing down as much as necessary (below 10 wpm gets a little tedious
though!) But I would sure appreciate being told to cool it rather than just
having the rag chew cut short. Regardless -- PLS GET ON THE CW SUBBANDS AND
CALL CQ -- I will be looking for you! 73 es God Bless de Ken - N4OI - K1

[Elecraft] K3 wish list - option to turn off display

2008-04-27 Thread Bob Jones

I increasingly like to operate remote, especially when traveling.
This can sometimes mean that the rig is turned on for several days.
I have some concern about burn-out of the LCD display in areas where
it remains unchanged for long periods.
Maybe this is an unjustified worry, but it would be good to have the
option to simply turn off the display when using remote operation, or
even when operating the rig from a PC in the shack.

That would be a good idea, Bob. LCD ADJ does down to 2 but perhaps zero

[Elecraft] K3 Importing to UK

2008-04-27 Thread Dave G4AON

Hello Jim

You will have to pay 17.5% VAT on the total price including shipping, it
should be duty free (if they charge duty you should be able to claim it
back).

When I received mine back in November the amount payable to UPS was the
vat plus an £11 handling fee, you would normally be asked to pay before
they will deliver. Smaller items tend to arrive by Parcel Force who
charge £13, not what you might call good value. The only viable shipping
option when I ordered mine was UPS, as the US Postal Service didn't have
sufficient insurance cover.

If you have the KPAIO3 board in place, you don't need the jumper block. Just
leave the KPAIO3 board on the connectors.

Hey Greg,

Quick query if you have a minute. I can't find my KPA
bypass jumper. It looks like all I need to do is
jumper 4 pins on each side of the two connectors and
throw in a cap. yes?

Do I need to pull the PAIO board?

Cheers,

RE: [Elecraft] CW Mistakes

2008-04-27 Thread Dave Van Wallaghen
Ron, as usual, you have succinctly put into words a real life experience
that I can see, may parallel some of my limited experience. I have followed
this thread closely as well as the comments about using the Farnsworth
method and based on some of the comments, thought OMG - I've been doing it
wrong!

I've only been doing this ham thing for a couple of years, so I am certainly
in the learning group as it pertains to cw. After writing everything down
for the first few months, I quickly realized that in order to become
proficient at rag chewing, I needed to learn code like regular vocal
conversation. I began to head copy and just make notes of important info -
and I did it at very slow speeds at the beginning and have now ramped up to
about 10-13 wpm comfortably. I have also noticed that as I am starting to
hear words, head copy is a little easier at faster speeds - I begin to lose
track of the visual string of characters at slower speeds. It is like the
buffer in my head is time constrained not character constrained.

I think the Farnsworth method has worked for me in that I am able to
recognize the characters at a faster speed, but I still need the longer
inter-character spacing to form the word comprehension in my head. With that
said, I can see how many who now have the rhythm down at higher speeds would
hear that as a distraction based on a time constrained head buffer. I have
found many who use the Farnsworth method on the air and I tend to work them
more often than not. When I hear code where there is little inter-character
spacing, it just sound like a long run on of code goop at this point. I'm
hoping that will change as I become more proficient.

I also realize that I should get on the air more often (at least once a
day), but at this point it is just not doable with my current life schedule.
When I only have a few minutes of down time, I do try to sit at the radio
and just listen. This does keep my head into it and so far, I don't seem to
lose any speed I've gained by not engaging in a QSO. Sometimes I've gone a
month without a contact, but at least I've listened almost everyday. I am
going to make a concentrated effort to get on the air more often this
summer.

So, with my limited experience and based on some of the comments I've read
here, I think the method I'm using is slowly working. I can't wait until
it all clicks and I hear regular word conversation that many of you have
described. It was frustrating at first, but I can now see (I should say
hear) that it can happen.

Anyway, thanks Ron, for your words have acted as encouragement for me to
continue down this path. It should also allow me to work others at any speed
and help out someone in the future who is starting out like me. It is the
least I could do after all of those who have done it for me.

73,
Dave W8FGU

Is that a mistake for most Hams?

 It wasn't for me.

I am aware of many ops who want to QRQ at 30 wpm, 40 wpm and up. I have no
argument with them when they say that they must learn to hear words, not
characters. That certainly sounds plausible, as does the idea of learning
code as words from the very beginning.

Such extreme QRQ is surely an interesting challenge for those who pursue
 it,
but it's certainly not mainstream in Amateur CW operations from my
experience on the bands. (Sometimes contest exchanges approach those
 speeds,
but that's a different story. Every contact is very brief and
 predictable.)

Learning to copy individual characters at very slow speed sure did not
bother me. After over 50 years pounding brass my fastest comfortable
copying speed is about 35 wpm. I can copy 40 but it wears me out pretty
quickly. I don't try to send faster than 30 WPM but then I use a
 mechanical
key, either a hand pump for QRS or a bug for QRQ.

I see
nothing. Then, usually, after listening for a bit, suddenly my brain
 locks
on and the letters start scrolling by in my head. Then it's fine copy.
 It's
kinda of fun to sit back, let the code flow into my hearing and have that
 suddenly happen.

I made transition to head copy slowly from copying letter-by-letter on
paper, as we used to do to pass our FCC tests and when receiving messages.

For me, the ability to send and receive very slow CW is an important
 skill;
one I use far more than sending or receiving over 30 WPM. As more and more

Oh, s--l--o--w CW sure gets tedious for me too, but it's normally only for a

I find that a five or ten minute exchange of basic contact info and a few

certainly true of me when I was first on the air: after a few minutes I
needed to QRT and relax so I could stop hyperventilating!

Re: [Elecraft] Monitoring yourself

2008-04-27 Thread Jerry Flanders
Neat! I worked the SP DX RTTY contest yesterday. I could print lots
of 80M european RTTY stations in the contest from this netherlands
receiver with MMTTY running on the connected computer, but couldn't
even hear them on my own rx here in SC. Couldn't hear myself on their
rx when I TX'ed either, until midnight local time, and then only weakly.

I have bookmarked this one - would be very useful to compare
antennas, etc in the future. You can read signal levels from the meter.

I didn't try to record it, but this should be possible so you could
evaluate your audio after a test tx.

I wish they had other bands too for antenna test purposes. 160 and 20
would be good additions. Presently only lower sections of 80 and 40.

[Elecraft] Re: Portable CW paddles for K2?

2008-04-27 Thread Chris Kantarjiev
The Palm Mini paddle is a very well thought out and nicely engineered
package; one of the best features is how the mechanism is completely
protected by the case when not in use. The ability to mount it
in various ways and positions is a nice plus.

It's very adjustable and amenable to a light or heavy touch.

The overall feel is a little soft - the arms are made of something
like PC board material and the paddles themselves have a soft surface,
so there is some give in the motion after the contacts close.

For me, the benefits of the packaging outweigh the less-than-perfect
touch - especially for backpacking.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Setting 1.00 mw with KXV3 for XV144

2008-04-27 Thread AD6XY - Mike

Why are you setting the band to 28 MHz? You should have set up the
transverter band first. If you had you would presumably have 144 on your
display and not 28.

It appears from what you have indicated you are telling the K3 to transmit
1mW on 10m from the normal antenna rather than to use the KXV3.

If that is not the case, then perhaps you have the fault I had, which was
the RF Choke on the transverter power detector board not being soldered
properly.

My firmware 1.78 only shows: MIC SEL FP.H b1 A5 and I have not figured
out how to adjust it - the main VFO knob also gives me a choice of rP.H and
LInE In ..

On a separate note - I have this anomaly that I emailed support on Friday
night:

Managed to 'lock-up' my K3 - NO buttons work - including power - had to
pull the power plug
going thru the config menu - at PTT-KEY both ' OFF-OFF' tried to change
values and complete lockup
Completely repeatable - go to config PTT then move main vfo control and
lock up.
Was on AM 13840 listening to a SW station/
Changed mode/freq - still does it - as soon as main VFO adjusted.

Any advice/help comments?

There is a ground trace missing from one end of C98 and C97 on the front

Hence the problem with the MH2. I am told that an official Elecraft fix

If you must use a mike that needs bias then use the rear panel connector
for now (i.e. Elecraft or Icom Proset). MH2s are excluded of course,
unless you have an appropriate adapter. 688 is the earliest SN that we

RE: Re:[Elecraft] K3: R-MH2 mic problems

2008-04-27 Thread Don Nesbitt
I'm guessing here - but - it sounds like you might have the bias turned on
to the K3 mic connector. Heil HC-4 elements do NOT require bias and putting
bias on them will usually (have to file the usually caveat here as there
may be some strange wiring involved) prevent them from working!

Let's try this:

1. Tap - Menu (the display will probably show a number 6 on the upper
line and LCD BRT on the lower line - at least mine always seems to come up
that way if enough time has gone by since I used it last). Regardless of
what the display defaults to, after you have tapped Menu do the
following:

2. Rotate VFO B knob to until you see: MIC SEL on the LOWER line. The
UPPER line will display the current mic settings:

3. If the UPPER line shows something like: FP.H(or L) followed by a space
and then the word bias you have the bias turned on for the mic input
selected (either FP for Front or RP for rear).

4. If the word bias shows up, then you do indeed have the bias turned on.

5. If the bias is turned on, then TAP the REV button (it has a red #2 in
small print under it) once and the word bias will disappear.

NOTE: The REV button alternately turns the bias to the mic connector on and
off.

6. If the top line now shows something like FP.H with nothing following
it, you have selected the Front panel mic input (the FP) and have selected
high gain ( the H). You can change from H to L by tapping the A/B
button (it has a small red #1) under it.

On my both my HC-4 and HC-5 elements, I use the H setting and adjust the
MIC gain accordingly.

If the bias is not turned on, then all the above is not going to solve
your problem. If this is true, the 8 pin plug on your mic is likely wired
in some strange way.

Please give it a go and report back.

As usual, YMMV. Have fun - ' 73 es gud dxing -- Don N4HH K3 #83

Michael,

Q6 getting hot is likely caused by excessive DC bias.
Check the voltage on the base and the emitter (compare with the DC
voltage chart) for the transmit condition.

Other components that deserve to be checked are RFC6, R49, C120, C121,
T1, R47, R48, C124, C125, Q10, and R46.

[Elecraft] RE: K3 at Auction

2008-04-27 Thread Dave Agsten
I guess that he ordered a few K3s to make a profit on them while Elecraft
catches up. Some folks must be willing to pay a premium for not having to wait.
The law of Supply and Demand is applied here, although, in my opinion, it's
sure not, in the spirit of ham radio. I know I wouldn't do it, nor would I bid
on it. It's the same thing as ticket scalping, even though that is illegal in
some places. Free enterprise is just that, free to do whatever is legal.

The listing on ebay mentions the reserve price at that of an assembled kit due
to sales tax, shipping and other fees. $80 or so for shipping and other fees
from Aptos, California to Carlsbad, California? Other sealed Elecraft K3
items in future auctions are also mentioned. I won't be bidding on those
either. I would hope that no one would bid on them but that won't happen.

[Elecraft] S/N 687 1st PSK31 Contact

I had my first PSK31 contact with K3 S/N 687. Using an output power of 50
Watts, the IMDs were -29dBc or better, as displayed on the KK7uq IMD Meter.
Why use 5 Watts when you can use 50 Watts? Too many people have 100 watt rigs
and use 10 Watts or less, making it difficult for one to copy them...

My only complaint with the K3 is that is requires very little audio input to
get to 50 Watts! Had the LINE IN setting on 1 and the computers MAIN Volume
and WAVE OUTPUT way down. Can this be changed with different firmware? It
would be nice to be able to leave the computer's level alone, and be able to
have more range with the K3's controls...

Re: [Elecraft] K3: VFO B follows band changes on VFO A

2008-04-27 Thread Rich (KE0X)

The frequency selected in VFO B is stored in memory and can be changed to
whatever you want, and thus can be recalled again.

BUT - and this must be a bug - on my rig as soon as I get to far out of the
VFO A band range (for example if on the 20 meter band when I tune below
13000) with the B VFO there is a click then a 3 to 5 S unit drop in signal
strength. Similar things happen on the other bands. This can't be right.
It appears that the B VFO is changing band pass filters even though I have
no second receiver and am listening to the A VFO.

Definitely should not do this.

ALSO, strange things happen to the 30 meter band stored frequency when I try
this. That is after observing that the signal drops as above, I noticed that
the 30 meter band changed so that both VFO A changes to the frequency I had
selected on the 20 meter band and the B VFO changes to the where I left the
B VFO while on the 20 meter band before changing down to 30 meters.

It appears that if you tune the B VFO out of range then not only is the
present band messed up but also at least the next lower band.

Even worse than above.

Rich

Can't agree with you more Dave,
I am into telescopes as well as ham radio, and there is a high end

They have a waiting list that goes for 3 to 4 years! Anyway, their

I think Elecraft should follow suit.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: VFO B follows band changes on VFO A

2008-04-27 Thread n4lq
Yea I have the same problem and it drives me nuts. Trying to listen to the
SW bands causes all kinds of confusion with the Band button. I loose bands
and screw up others. What I wish is for is that the band button always
just select ham bands and not suddenly become some weird band. I had the
wise idea of just using VFO B for SWLing and VFO A for standard hamming but
somehow the end up interacting and I eventually have to get the whole mess
straightened out. Otherwise I love this rig!

The frequency selected in VFO B is stored in memory and can be changed to
whatever you want, and thus can be recalled again.

BUT - and this must be a bug - on my rig as soon as I get to far out of
the

VFO A band range (for example if on the 20 meter band when I tune below
13000) with the B VFO there is a click then a 3 to 5 S unit drop in signal
strength. Similar things happen on the other bands. This can't be right.
It appears that the B VFO is changing band pass filters even though I have
no second receiver and am listening to the A VFO.

Definitely should not do this.

ALSO, strange things happen to the 30 meter band stored frequency when I
try
this. That is after observing that the signal drops as above, I noticed
that
the 30 meter band changed so that both VFO A changes to the frequency I
had
selected on the 20 meter band and the B VFO changes to the where I left
the

B VFO while on the 20 meter band before changing down to 30 meters.

It appears that if you tune the B VFO out of range then not only is the
present band messed up but also at least the next lower band.

Even worse than above.

I spoke to Wayne at Visalia about this very problem. He says it
is on the list. He has a scheme where if you venture outside the
ham bands a new frequency register is spawned and becomes
the general coverage register so the band up/down buttons
behave normally.

[Elecraft] Palm Mini-Paddles?

Looking for some portable paddles to use with my K2. Do any of you use
the Palm Mini-Paddles? Are they really worth $95, their current selling

Re: [Elecraft] Palm Mini-Paddles?

2008-04-27 Thread David A. Belsley

Mike:
I think these paddles are great. But . . .

a. you have to make a good base for them, and
b. you have to look closely to figure out just how they works to get
them adjusted correctly

I affixed them to one end of a piece of plexiglass about 2.5 x
8 (don't know the exact measurements off hand), made big enough to
support one's hand while operating, and with 6 small feet placed to
prevent any flexing. The weight of the resting hand holds things
firmly in place and gives a very secure operation.

As to adjustment, it's a bit of a pain to set them up at first, but
once set these are fantastic paddles. They are much more fun and
sure to use than, say, the standard Bencher, which is a problematic
set of paddles to be sure. The Palm paddles have an early contact
facility that allows the electrical contact to be made before the
paddles reach their physical stop. I personally find this very
disconcerting and so have mine adjusted so the electrical contact is
made at the physical stop. This took a bit of adjusting to achieve,
but it is quite possible.

best wishes,

dave belsley, w1euy

Mike,

I have a set of them for my K2. They are very well made and I like them a
lot. The packaging is excellent for protecting them in transit. The
detachable cord is also very convenient. The feel is a little soft (as
noted by a previous post) because the paddles flex a bit but in my opinion
that's a nit. My CW is neither better nor worse than on my Bencher and I
haven't noticed any fatigue on long runs. I would not hesitate to buy
another set even though they are a bit pricey. For what it's worth

Re: [Elecraft] Palm Mini-Paddles?

2008-04-27 Thread Rick Dettinger
I screwed mine to an aluminum bar with a rubber foot on the front.
The rear of the bar had a hole that mated up with a hole in the K1
mounting bracket. I used the Elecraft supplied thumb screw to attach
the bar to the bracket. It worked well, unless I wanted to carry the
K1 without the bracket. I now use a GHD travel paddle attached to an
aluminum plate. It is not as compact but I can use it with other
radios or without the bracket I just hold the plate in my left
palm. This can be done with other paddles and I find that it works
well for me. An advantage of the Palm Mini paddles is that you can
buy extra snap in mounting bases and attach then to different gear.
Some have even attached them to tiles to use in the shack. The
paddles simply snap into the bases and are ready for use. My only
complaint with the Palm paddles is the slightly soft contacts. Not a
big one for portable use.

[Elecraft] ELecraft K2 DATA port IMPORTANT update

2008-04-27 Thread Jean-François Ménard

Hi everybody,

Since my first prototype of the K2 DATA port implementation, I did some
extensive test today during an outdoor portable operation.

I found that ground loop can occur on lower band... 40m or lower... And the
problem come from the PTT line that goes to ground during TX. Even if
the line IN and OUT are both isolated with an audio tranformer.

I also test today my DATA port with my SCS PTC-IIe modem and had the same
problem.

I finally found the problem and solved it !!

Like SCS (PTC-IIe manufactuer) said in their user manual. If you tranceiver
have an external power option, like found on Yaesu FT-8XX data connector,
YOU SHOULD USE IT. Do not power your modem from another power source, but
from the transceiver port itself. Like for the NUE-PSK, PTC-IIe or any other
TNC... always power your device with power from your transceiver.

This way, you will avoid ground loop that will harm your signal quality for
sure.

I just add one wire inside my K2 to the DATA port. I took the 12V line from
the AUX 12V connector inside the K2. This way, you will not have any more
problem and finally have an universal DATA port ffor almost any kind of
external device.

I will post a revised schematic on my website this week.

Like my previous modification, I always use RG-174 for inside wires. It does
prevent RF pickup during transmit and keep the signal as clean as possible.

I will also post a few more pics.

Another tip, apply acrylic coating spray on the back of the amplifier board
before applying the two way tape. It will prevent short circuit with any
electronic part with the chassis.

[Elecraft] RE: K3 at Auction

2008-04-27 Thread Don Rasmussen
I'll tell you what's not in the spirit of amateur
radio Dave, and that's likening a fellow ham that you
don't even know to a ticket scalper in public
because you guess that he ordered a few K3s to make a
profit.

Do you know that? Don’t think so because it isn’t
true.

There are hundreds or thousands of ham radios on ebay
at any given time and you of course are welcome to
your opinion about this subject and ebay as much as
anyone, but postings like this in one public is pretty
bad juju.

I was apprehensive when I ordered the gear, not
because I was afraid of losing on it, but because I
was doing it to have some fun while I waited for my
own K3, a diversion like the wiki I created, and was
afraid that someone might characterize me negatively
about it.

Rest assured there is not enough money that I could
make on an auction (my last one occurred in 1999) to
compromise my good name.

So please, lighten up, it's not a body part I'm
selling, it's a radio. Or don't lighten up, but
keeping opinions that are based on conjecture in
private is most often the best policy - IMO.

I guess that he ordered a few K3s to make a profit on
them while Elecraft catches up. Some folks must be
willing to pay a premium for not having to wait. The
law of Supply and Demand is applied here, although, in
my opinion, it's sure not, in the spirit of ham radio.
I know I wouldn't do it, nor would I bid on it. It's
the same thing as ticket scalping, even though that is
illegal in some places. Free enterprise is just that,
free to do whatever is legal.

The listing on ebay mentions the reserve price at that
of an assembled kit due to sales tax, shipping and
other fees. $80 or so for shipping and other fees
from Aptos, California to Carlsbad, California? Other
sealed Elecraft K3 items in future auctions are also
mentioned. I won't be bidding on those either. I would
hope that no one would bid on them but that won't
happen.

Folks,
Why waste your time, We are all a bunch of old farts, you are not
living forever. Just use a good paddle without worrying about
cosmetics or damage (or money).
I have a Begali Sculpture that will satisfy any of you picky code
aficionados, I take it on camping trips and to picnic grounds. I throw
it in my trunk with out worry.
The paddle is pretty much indestructible. It's $600.00 bucks but it it
the best pair of dancing shoes you will ever own. Don't deprive
yourself. Just get the best and enjoy!

[Elecraft] Re: Palm Paddles

2008-04-27 Thread w7aqk

I have used the Palm paddles, and many other small sized paddles. In fact, I
brought my Palm paddle with me on this weekend's trip to Ozarkcon. The Palm is
well made, and fairly easy to use. But like almost all small paddles, it has
issues. For one thing, like most small paddles the Palm is very hard to secure
or hold firmly because it is so small. It's just hard to find a good place to
hold on and stabilize it while you send. But it's easier than some because
it's longer, and you can hold it without interfering with the mechanism itself.
The levers feel a bit mushy to me, but again that's what you get with many
smaller paddles. What I like most about the Palm is that it seems very
durable. I like how it folds up for transport. I don't think you will damage
a Palm unless you really abuse it. Overall, I'd say it's definitely one of the
better small paddles.

The small paddle that I like best for feel is the Porta-Paddle by American
Morse. It's also well made and durable. It's a little harder to secure
comfortably, but maybe you won't find it as difficult to do as I seem to. The
mechanism is fairly simple, but effective. And I like the way it looks. My
version of this is one of the older, original ones Doug Hauff made some years
ago. It looks much the same as those sold currently, but not exactly. But
I've handled a newer one, and it feels much the same.

I'm still looking for the ideal small paddle, but until I find it, I'll take
one of the above.

[Elecraft] K3 #685 arrived

2008-04-27 Thread Chris Meagher
Hello,
K3/10 #685 basic kit arrived 28 April.
Arrived in VK on 9 April, spent over 2 weeks in Australian customs.
Inventory done, all there but no 4-40 nuts.
I'm used to metric sizes, can anyone tell me what 4-40 refers to,
so I can see if they are available locally, I don't want to wait another week!
Cheers, Chris VK2LCD
