Actually AGC SLP 015 flattens the audio output. AGC SLP 000 is the minimum
AGC action but it still reduces the audio output compared to AGC OFF.

  If
they are zero beat or close, it will mush the dickens out of
the copy by making them all the same level in your ear. I set
AGC SLP to 15 for contests.

This makes a wide range of RF signal levels produce the same audio output
level, probably not ideal for contesting.

Make sure your ATT/PRE/RFGAIN use conforms to something like:

160m ATT plus RF gain at 2 oclock
80m ATT plus RF gain at 3 oclock
40m ATT plus RF gain fully clockwise.
 20m
15m off plus RF gain fully clockwise.
10m PRE plus RF gain fully clockwise.
 6m

These ATT and PRE settings are generally OK, but band conditions and
antenna/terrain gain can alter them. The RF Gain is seldom optimum at full
scale.

The Smiths asserted:
Having the Slope set to 000 is like not having the AGC on at all.

Not really. AGC SLP 000 still produces significant AGC action. See K8ZOA's
paper. There is considerable white space between the Slope=0 curve and the
AGC = OFF line. That's why Dave proposed enhancing the AGC SLP parameter
with negative numbers.

During the CQ 160 the K3 performed very well. Also in the (small) pile-ups.

Only mushy experience I had the following situation:
- Being on the DX cluster
- Everybody clicks to you through some bandmap
- Therefore everybody calls on exact the same freq

No wonder it sounds mushy.

(exception: K2's that are mostly more than a few Hz off can be heard :-) )

2010-02-06 Thread Zoli Pitman HA1AG
Hi Ruben,

I use samlex 1223's for many years, mainly on my expeditions and also
with K3. You have to know that there are PS's made in BY which look
exactly like the original 1223 but they have no output filtering and
they have a different 12V connector. They do have a noise issue,
particularly on 80m SSB band. I know that these were sold at the
Friedrichshafen hamfest a few years ago.

There is enough room behind the 12V connector to add some filtering
inside. Noise issues can be fully cleared up. I can send U some photos,
let me know if you need.

Don't worry, 1223 noise issues can be fully cleared up.

It is also wise to add a varistor to protect your radio if the PS bites
the dust.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Loses RX Audio at BW of 2.8 kHz

2010-02-06 Thread K6LE
I have been noticing a similar anomaly since 3.76.

The only difference is it happens when I go to 2.9.

As I increase the width I see the filter switch at 2.8 (I have the 2.7 SSB
filter and 6.0 AM filter) and then at 2.9 it goes dead until I advance it to
3.0 and from then on it continues as it should.

Also when it goes from dead to audio at 3.0 I get a nasty click.

Scott, maybe it's a Prather deal.

When the K3 is in the LSB, USB or AM mode, adjusting the bandwidth down to

continues to read incoming signal strength. I've tried an EE-Init and
reloaded the configuration, but the problem remains. Thinking this might be
related to 3.76, I went back to 3.30 and I have exactly the same problem. If
I turn on the sub receiver and change its BW using BSET, it loses LSB, USB
and AM audio at 2.8 kHz as well. To get audio to return, all I need to do is
change the BW to 2.9 kHz or greater on either the main or the sub.

Looking through the reflector postings, it looks like someone saw something
similar to this in the DATA mode a few months back, and pressing the A/B key
would clear it. However, in my case the only way I can restore audio is to
change the BW to 2.9 kHz or greater. In the CW and DATA modes, the audio
does not drop out at any bandwidth setting.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what might be going on?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 in a cw pileup - needs work

2010-02-06 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Hi Guy,

The problem reported has the classic characteristics of in-passband IMD
caused by a small dynamic range (IMDDR3) IF system, rather than being
something caused by the AGC sub-system. Yes changing the AGC's loop
characteristics will alter the effect, but the root cause is still
non-linearity in the signal path. I suspect the second mixer.

Trouble is that large IMDDR3 IF systems can consume a lot of power, and low
power drain by the K3's receiver was a design goal I believe.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 No ATU and 12w max

2010-02-06 Thread David Y.
Tom and All,

Sounds familiar! Your K3 serial number is low enough to be one that may be
affected (mine is #96) by a problem that is fairly easily corrected.
There's a cap that needs to be removed (if it hasn't been already, and
another small cap that needs to be added. I see you have copied Gary
Surrency, and he will undoubtedly supply you with the complete details (if I
am right about the issue).

If this happens again in the meantime, try this--disconnect the K3 from all
power, and let it sit for a while. It may have to remain disconnected for a
while. Chances are that this will temporarily restore your ATU. Sometimes
I had to wait 30 minutes to an hour before this worked. After I made the
mod, the problem has not returned, so I think it is solved.

Since it is the weekend, you might not hear from Gary until Monday. I can
send you the info he sent me, but I'm assuming it's the same problem. The
cap that needs to be removed is C19, and the cap that needs to be added is
an SMT cap (300 pf I think). You just tack it across two pins on an IC.

Let me know if you need the info.

[Elecraft] K-3 EBAY Scam of Feb 6

K-3 selling on E-Bay 6 Feb (Item # 300394149258) fully loaded with all
filters main and sub-receiver and EVERYTHING else with BUY NOW price of
$1,600.00 and 12 bids to $1,200.00. I reported this obvious hacked scam ad
to E-Bay and the Ad disappeared within an hour this morning. I love a good
deal but have noticed an increase in scams on E-Bay and QTH.com over the
past few weeks. Suggestion: Buy ham equipment only from fellow hams with
confirmed addresses. This levels the playing field somewhat in my view.
E-Bay is about the last place I would buy ham gear; usually is junk, but at
least protect yourself.

[Elecraft] Firmware upload problem

My problem is that I can no longer get the computer to talk to the K3

I'm using the Microham router software to talk to the K3 and this has
been working great until now.

Question, does the K3 keep the old settings (38400, 8, N, 1) or does it
resort back to the default settings which are ??

I also tried a direct cable (straight and null modem) and cannot get any
communication to occur.

I'm stuck until I get the K3 talking to the computer again..

Re: [Elecraft] K3 NB and Digital Reception

2010-02-06 Thread Lance Collister
Hello Julian,

I also noticed the other day that I was hearing a whoosing in the background
on
a CW station that I never heard before. I was afraid I had blown a preamp or
something. I finally found that I had set the NB on Wide 7, and as soon as I
turned it off or back to Nar 1, the problem disappeared.

So something must have changed in the NB operation in the latest Firmware. I
also
found last weekend when I switched to 144 MHz in the transverter mode for an
EME
sked, that my audio output from the LINE OUT suddenly seemed to be 15 or 20 dB
down on that band, as compared to 6m. That had never been a problem before. I
don't know if that is also related to the Firmware version or not.

In the last week I also found that the noise level seemed to come up higher and
reduce signal strength of incoming signals I use as reference (6m beacons).

Anyway, I still use the same firmware version, but I re-loaded a Configuration
file that I had saved several months ago...and readjusted the LINE OUT level in
the CONFIG menu. That seems to have solved the problems except the one with
the
NB. Now I have to be very careful not to use the Wide 7 NB setting.

that he had a problem, when I adjusted the RF gain, turned the ATT on and
turned the PRE off. His signal was now sweet.

So I switched to another sound card - and still the same result after I had
 reset the controls again.

Then I remembered that I had set the NB on (dsp off) and IF to Wide 7 and
as soon as I had turned the NB off, his signal was copied just fine. What I
found was that setting the IF to Wide 7, Med 7 or Nar 7 gave rise to what
only can be described as intermodulation.

The reason I use the NB at all is because my neighbour has one of these
solar pads that heats his swimming pool on his roof, and the pumps in it
generate this ta-pocketa-pocketa-pocketa noise (like an electric fence, but
faster) - and I just leave the NB one most of the time, because my
neighbours also own behemoth plasma TV sets :)

 So two questions:
   1) has anyone else noticed spurious intermodulation in DATA mode when the
IF NB is set to the 7 level - or have I got a fault?, and
 2) Is there a beginner's guide to help me understand how to use the NB
effectively - at the moment, I just spin the dials until the noise is gone.

 thanks, Julian VK4CMV

[Elecraft] K3 Utility program issue

2010-02-06 Thread Wes Stewart
I've been meaning to query the group about this for some time but the latest
episode has finally prodded me into asking.

I have noted before that when I ran the utility program after closing it and
then trying to use my logging program, the log couldn't connect using the
serial port.  Apparently the utility wasn't releasing the serial port after
having used it.

Windows Task Manager would not show that the utility was still running, but it
would take a reboot to fix the issue.  Not only that, but Windows wouldn't shut
down normally because it thought the utility was still running and wasn't
responding.  I would have to tell it to go ahead and close the utility.

Last night afte reading one of the threads on this reflector I decided to read
the release notes using the utility.  The K3 wasn't even turned on and I
obviously didn't try to address it with the program. After reading the notes, I
closed the program, decided to go to bed, started the Windows shut down and
left the room.

This morning I came in and discovered that the computer was still up, didn't
think much of it until I tried to open the logging program and got the I can't
connect to the radio error.  So even though I never used it, the utility
apparently captured the serial port and I had to go through the whole process
of manually shutting down Windows to get back to normal.

For the record, I'm running a Lenovo T400 with WinXP Pro SP3 and a Quatech
USB-Serial interface.

Anyone else have this problem?

Hi,

Yes, I have the same problem and Elecraft has been made aware of it. I
almost never use the utility for anything else than downloading new
firmware, but I can believe that the program opens the com port whether it
needs it or not.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Loses RX Audio at BW of 2.8 kHz

2010-02-06 Thread Scott Prather
Jeff: Thanks for the suggestion concerning the K3's filter configuration,
however, I'd already checked this. According to the K3 Configuration
Utility, FL3 is enabled for LSB, USB and AM in both receivers. Another point
to keep in mind is that FL3 is only selected at a BW setting of 2.7 kHz or
below, FL2 is still used at 2.8 kHz.

I just received the DSP board upgrade yesterday and intend to install it
this weekend. However, I thought that before I make any hardware changes
there might be some value in trying to determine what happened in case the
swap-out clears this issue.

Hi Scott,

Just a shot in the dark: Have you checked your filter configuration?
If you happen to have an empty slot enabled for those modes, you'll
get exactly the behavior you described. Use the K3 Utility to look
for a slot that you know to be empty but with the Bandwidth set to 2.8
and the LSB, USB, and AM boxes checked.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 in a cw pileup - needs work

2010-02-06 Thread Dick Green WC1M
Dave indicates that the problem occurred when the pileup consisted of four
or five loud stations. This leads me to wonder if the cause is the K3
hardware AGC threshold being too low, even after the mod introduced two
years ago. That mod was supposed to raise the threshold from S9+5 dB to
S9+25-30 dB.

I got into this issue after repeatedly being botherd by thumping from loud
CW stations above my passband during big contests. When I first noticed it,
I was using the 5-pole 500 Hz filters and the DSP set to about 300 Hz. I'd
hear the thumping from stations more than 150 Hz or even 250 Hz above my
frequency. Testing revealed that I could hear thumping from loud CW signals
as far as 700Hz away. The testing also showed that the filters were
effective against a loud continuous carrier, but CW signals were slipping
under the skirts. This suggested that the problem is caused by the hardware
AGC being tripped by the loud signals. I switched to 8-pole 400 Hz filters,
and that improved the situation considerably.

My testing probably wasn't lab-quality, but it showed that the hardware AGC
really kicks in much lower than S9+25-30dB. I think it's more like S9, or
just above. Perhaps if two or more signals in Dave's pileup were that lour
or louder, the hardware AGC kicked in and mushed them together?

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 in a cw pileup - needs work

Tonight I used a pair of K3's in the Sprint practice. Several
times I had a pileup of four or five loud stations calling me.
With AGC turned on, they were all mushed together, and I couldn't
 copy any of them.

 AGC settings:
 dcy soft
 hld 0.2
 pls nor
 slp 000
 thr 008
 f 200
 s 020

I tried both fast and slow agc. No joy.

So I turned the AGC OFF. Now this introduces another problem -
the very low threshold of the AF Limiter. The AF limiter, even at
its highest setting of 030 introduces gross distortion on loud
signals. This is even worse than the mushy AGC.

So I transfer the headphones to the speaker output, so I can
reduce the AF gain setting in an attempt to get away from the
raucous AF limiter. This works for a while, until finally one
loud signal blows out the K3's audio amplifier. This is the
second time that has happened to me. I guess I'm a slow learner
 on that issue.

Something really needs to be done here. My suggestions would to
raise the agc threshold further, and increase the slope of the
agc line (that would mean a slp setting of less than zero). The
AF limiter threshold also needs to be raised, and the AF speaker
 output needs better protection.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 in a cw pileup - needs work

2010-02-06 Thread Wes Stewart
Yes.

For non-portable use how about a K3 Pro or K3 MK V++ that clips a few
circuit traces and has a daughter board that uses two or three filter slots to
house a stout IF amp, an H-mode second mixer and a PIN attenuator before the
DSP?  The one remaining filter would only have to be good enough to get rid of
the image.

Just thinking out loud.

Hi Guy,

The problem reported has the classic characteristics of in-passband IMD
caused by a small dynamic range (IMDDR3) IF system, rather than being
something caused by the AGC
sub-system.

I can recall seeing this a couple of times, but not recently. The utility

firmware is installed, regardless of whether you use it for anything. The
problem may be related to using the VSPE virtual serial port software, since
that's what I was using when I noticed the problem.

The K3 Utility closes the serial port at exit. Windows process

 approximately
10 seconds and then re-load the firmware.

My problem is that I can no longer get the computer to talk to the K3
and therefore cannot attempt a re-load.

I'm using the Microham router software to talk to the K3 and this has
 been working great until now.

 Question, does the K3 keep the old settings (38400, 8, N, 1)
 or does it
resort back to the default settings which are ??

I also tried a direct cable (straight and null modem) and
 cannot get any
 communication to occur.

I'm stuck until I get the K3 talking to the computer again..

 HELP..!!

Re: [Elecraft] Firmware upload problem

2010-02-06 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Setting No radio does not guarantee transparent operation
by microHAM Router. Again:

DO NOT PERFORM A FIRMWARE UPLOAD USING MICROHAM ROUTER
WITH ANY MICROHAM INTERFACE. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Even though I know my way around Router and the microHAM
interfaces well enough to generally make sure Router is
transparent, there is no way to force and lock the data
rate between the microHAM interface and the transceiver.
I keep a serial cable attached to a serial port on one of
my computers specifically for use when updating K3 firmware.

You can use microHAM, but you have to select:

DO NOT use microHAM Router to upload firmware to the K3.
It IS NOT SUPPORTED. Find a computer with a hardware serial port or

Re: [Elecraft] K3 in a cw pileup - needs work

2010-02-06 Thread Barry N1EU

Tonight I used a pair of K3's in the Sprint practice. Several
times I had a pileup of four or five loud stations calling me.
With AGC turned on, they were all mushed together, and I couldn't
 copy any of them.

So I turned the AGC OFF. Now this introduces another problem -
the very low threshold of the AF Limiter. The AF limiter, even at
its highest setting of 030 introduces gross distortion on loud
signals. This is even worse than the mushy AGC.

You need to maximize your rf/af dynamic range - that is what is going to
turn that mush into a beautiful symphony of distinct signals of varying
levels. What has worked well for me is AGC off (although AGC on works fine
as well), high isolation headphones, and the gain throttling techniques
(most important) described by K3NA, W4ZV, myself, and others.

Just to continue from previous post - I experienced only mush in pileup
reception until fully adopting this technique. High isolation headphones
are critical because you want to set gain such that weak signals are lightly
heard but clearly copiable. You're maximizing the receive dynamic range
delivered to your ears and the high isolation means you can clearly hear
fainter signals without turning up the gain and squashing the dynamic range
(and too frequently engaging AF Limiter with AGC Off).

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB net tomorrow needs an NCS

2010-02-06 Thread Phillip Shepard

Hi gang,

I will be away from my station tomorrow, and Mark, K4SO, is buried by 2 feet
of snow and has no power.

So, we need someone to be NCS. I haven't heard from Roger, K7SJ. Perhaps
he will be able to step in. Otherwise, we need someone else to help out.
It isn't difficult. The pace is easy and the group is cooperative.
Remember that it is at 1800Z on Sunday on 14.314 MHz. Go for it. Thank you.

[Elecraft] Field Day Antenna Setup

2010-02-06 Thread Brett Howard
Ok so far I've only had the pleasure of operating on a gain antenna in
the HF bands for 2 days in my lifetime. I'm in the process of working
out a setup that will allow me to gain at least one day a year... ;)

I'm looking at a mast setup from Blue Sky Masts
(http://www.blueskymast.com) From the looks of it they will allow me to
get my antenna up to about 10 meters with margin.

The antenna that I've been given is a Hustler 3-TBA its rated to provide
8dB of gain. Doesn't specify what band that gain pertains to or if its
dBi dBd or what... But its got 8dB of magical happiness. And 27 to 28
dB of F/B ratio. It has a boom length of 14' and a longest element of
24'9. The wind surface is rated at 5.7sq. ft and it weighs 40
pounds.

Blue sky has a max head load of 40 lbs at 11 meters on their sturdier
towers. This is why I figure 10 meters would be a good number. However
I plan on purchasing the 11 meter tower as it is the first model that
comes with the secondary guying equipment rather than having to purchase
it separately.

So my question to you gentlemen is what are your thoughts on this
antenna? How high to I really need to get this thing in order to get
good performance out of it? I ask this because I heard from the Blue
Sky sales guy that he'd only recommend going to about 8 meters and
double guying. (I'm still waiting for a response from BlueSky
Engineering on why I'm not allowed to use their mast to 10 meters as
I'll be doing so with margin). I think the reason may be that their
wind load ratings are tested with 1 sq ft of surface area.

Then finally if I were later to add a better antenna system to this
setup what would you recommend? Preferably more gain as I'm usually
running with either 7 watts (K1) or up to 100 watts (K3) never more (and
usually less). I think that less weight would also be beneficial as it
would make things easier to deploy and might possibly lend itself to
greater mast heights (I can always buy more mast sections to add to my
setup at a later date).

Thanks for your thoughts gentlemen.

~Brett (KC7OTG)

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2010-02-06 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
I try to keep my announcements and reports cheerful and filled with stories
about the outdoor occurrences in my area. This week is different. We have
lost one of the fine gentleman of amateur radio. On the afternoon of Thursday,
February 4th, I got an email headed with W6ZH - SK. I had lost another friend
but was reticent to read the email. The feeling of having my heart drop just
from a few characters written on a computer monitor had happened again. But I
opened and read the note. Even though we had lost Pete Hoover the email was
good in its way. He was surrounded by family when he passed on and had lived
an exemplary life. One we could all aspire to but never hope to match. Please
search the Internet for stories about him and his family. We all are in a very
deep debt to his grandfather. The Commerce Secretary saved amateur radio and
many of a certain era had their licenses signed by Herbert Hoover. Without his
work and passion for what he knew we could do
we would have lost our privileges. This passion was continued by Pete and his
very charming wife Meredith. Thank you to Pete and to your father and to your
grandfather. You will be missed by all that ever met you.
Could we please dedicate tomorrow's two nets to Pete Hoover?

Please join us tomorrow evening.

1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call)
2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP relay help)

Sunday 2300z (Sunday 3 PM PST) 14050 kHz
Monday z (Sunday 4 PM PST) 7045 kHz

   Stay warm,
  Kevin. KD5ONS

You were not dreaming! The K2 will treat a simultaneous contact closure
of both the dot and the dash lines as a straight key. The two diodes are
there to eliminate the short circuit that would otherwise exist between
the two sides of the paddle, which would cause a contact closure on
either side of the paddle to ground both sides (and therefore be treated
as a straight key as well).

The circuit is on page 95 of the K2 manual. There is also a menu item
that you will need to ensure is turned on.

Re: [Elecraft] Rose's Covers Cases

2010-02-06 Thread Greg
Rose's approach to customer service and quality are an extension of the
Elecraft model. She does great work and listens to the voice of her
customers. You can't do any better.

Rose will also customise further, I have two external side pockets on mine,

I'll add my endorsement of the cases, covers and my HexKey cover (which can
 be seen here

Rose keeps you informed as the work progresses and even sent me photos of the
 various stages.
Delivery to UK was reasonable, but I don't remember exactly how much.
I was so pleased, that even though I'd bought a (rather cheap) solid wall
foam filled case, for my K3, I then bought a carry case from Rose to use in
it's place. I may buy one with foam ends to use in slightly rougher
 conditions.

I'm very pleased with the workmanship (or should that be workwomanship :-)
and would not hesitate to recommend her work to anyone.

One last comment, I originally looked at a similar K3 cover by someone else,
but they refused to ship to the UK. Boy am I glad they did, because if they
 hadn't, I wouldn't have tried a Rose cover!

[Elecraft] What became of the Elecraft’s KPA150 0 and KPA 800

2010-02-06 Thread DaveVK

What happened to the Elecraft Amps? Did they get beyond 'proto: gee I want
one' stage?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Loses RX Audio at BW of 2.8 kHz

2010-02-06 Thread WW2PT
My K3 was working fine last time I used it. Tonight I turned it on and
noticed a similar problem -- no audio in USB or LSB modes whenever I
set the width to 3.00 kHz or less. Tried downgrading from 3.76 to 3.63
but no change. Checked all filter settings in the config menu, nothing
out of place. All other modes were fine.

On a hunch, I restored my last configuration backup file. It worked!
Everything seems to be behaving well again.

All: This evening when running FW 3.76 I'm seeing a problem with my
 K3 that
 I've never seen before.

When the K3 is in the LSB, USB or AM mode, adjusting the bandwidth
 down to
2.8 kHz will result in total loss of audio, even though the S-meter
continues to read incoming signal strength. I've tried an EE-Init and
reloaded the configuration, but the problem remains. Thinking this
 might be
related to 3.76, I went back to 3.30 and I have exactly the same
 problem. If
I turn on the sub receiver and change its BW using BSET, it loses
 LSB, USB
and AM audio at 2.8 kHz as well. To get audio to return, all I need
 to do is
change the BW to 2.9 kHz or greater on either the main or the sub.

Looking through the reflector postings, it looks like someone saw
 something
similar to this in the DATA mode a few months back, and pressing the
 A/B key
would clear it. However, in my case the only way I can restore audio
 is to
change the BW to 2.9 kHz or greater. In the CW and DATA modes, the
 audio
does not drop out at any bandwidth setting.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what might be going on?

Re: [Elecraft] K2: diodes for using straight key?

2010-02-06 Thread David Pratt
In a recent message, dw bw...@fastmail.fm wrote ...
It seems I read somewhere that there is a diode mod for the K2 so that a
straight key can be input into the unit along with a paddle and the K2
can tell the difference and one can use both keys?

I agree with Brian, this arrangement works quite well, although I use a
pair of 1N5821 Shottky diodes in place of the 1N4148 and have also wired
a 0.47uF (474) capacitor across the straight key. Without the capacitor
I got unpredicted errors, possibly caused by stray r.f. in the shack.

My only regret is that the K3 does not have a menu option to accept my
K2 dual key assembly. Consequently, I have to use a different key for
the K3.
