Re: [Elecraft] k2 audio power
My Sony MDR 7506's have a DC resistance of 72 ohms per side. Since the phones are in parallel, the rig will see about 36 ohms. I am not sure how that relates to impedance but it seems in the ballpark. Heating and reactance would increase it some but I don't know by how much. They are comfortable and very sensitive. I bought them because of good reviews on eham. 73 - Rick - K7MW Sony MDR-7506 and MDR-V6 -- these are standard, large, closed headphones with nice soft cushions, work for for long operating sessions. These sell in the $100 range. Sony, being Sony, doesn't put impedance and sensitivity specs on the data sheets that I have, but I suspect they are in the same range as the ER4S's. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft You must subscribe to post. Re: [Elecraft] Tuning 88' with KX1 autotuner?
Jim - That is my antenna, currently installed as an inverted vee with center at 40 feet. I have about 80 feet of window line. I just tried it with my KX1 using an Elecraft 4:1 balun. [Usually, I use an outboard Z match tuner (NORCAL)]. On 40 meters, I got an SWR reading of 2.3 while 30 and 20 meters were 1.1 and 1.0 respectively. I could probably get the SWR on 40 meters down by changing the feed line length. Of course, this would change the other bands. The balanced antennas are harder to match than the end fed wires recommended in the KX1 ATU manual. I get close to 1.0 on all 3 bands with an end fed 80 foot wire sloping up to 30 feet and a 33 foot wire laid on the ground. I highly recommend the KX1 for portable use. 73 - Rick - K7MW - Original Message - From: Jim Miller [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Sunday, February 20, 2005 3:21 PM Subject: [Elecraft] Tuning 88' with KX1 autotuner? Re: [Elecraft] S-9 calibration with XG1
Its hard to try to match up the number of segments lighted with any of the S unit marks. Thats the price we pay for not having a real analog S meter. I am thinking of calibrating the meter so S9 is nine segments lighted (50 uv) . One segment for each S unit. I would have to count segments instead of using the scale. I am not sure that the high end of the scale is important, anyhow. My Sierra dosen't waste segments on 40db over S9. I think that with a 40db over signal, the attenuator would be on or the RF gain reduced, either of which would change the meter reading. The bar graph has 10 segments so I could read to S10 (5db over S9 ?). I am not sure if the meter would be any less linear. 73 - Rick - K7MW From: Stan Rife [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, February 21, 2005 5:10 PM Subject: [Elecraft] S-9 calibration with XG1 I just put the XG1 together and had a question about the setup on the K2 for setting the S-meter to S-9. In the K2 manual, the only mention of the XG1 is on page 48. This is the step right after the Cal SLo and Cal SHi functions. It does not indicate whether to have the preamp on or not. The instructions that come with the XG1 say to have the preamp on. Which is correct? I am assuming that it would be with the preamp on, since I get around S-5 with the preamp off, and close to S-9 with the preamp on. This is after doing the SLo and SHi calibrations. Also, what is considered S9 on the K2 meter? Just before the 9, or right under the 9 ? I am not trying to be too picky, just wondering what point everyone else is using, if there is a standard. Right under the 9 goes slightly past it and kind of looks like a better indication for a 5 over condition. Right now, the XG1 set for 50 microvolts lights the bar under the 9 on my S-meter. Re: [Elecraft] Antenna question
Hi Tom - I don't think you mentioned what bands you intend to use the antenna for. If just 40M, then you may do as well with coax and not need the tuner. If you use it for an all band doublet, the tuner may have difficulty on some bands depending on the impedence and the lenght of the feedline. Without the balun, you may have radiation from the feedline, which may not be a problem or it may cause problems in the shack with RF getting into equipment or noise on receive if the source is near the rig. I use a doublet but I increased the lenght to 88 ft and the k2 handles it well on most bands. I plan to increase the lenght to 100 ft to get better efficiency on 80 meters. I use a 1 to 1 balun. A 4 to 1 balun may work better on some frequencies but would likely give less efficiency on 80 meters due to low radiation resistance. Finally, changing the lenght of the feed line can improve the match on some bands with a possible worse match on others. Multiband antennas are always a compromise and experimenting may be required.Rick - K7MW Original Message - From: Tom McCulloch [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Saturday, August 20, 2005 6:57 PM Subject: [Elecraft] Antenna question Hi all, I'm considering putting up a 40 meter dipole fed with a 450 ladder line. [Elecraft] KAT3 question
I have just installed the KAT3 and it seems to be working, however, i can only get a SWR of 4.0 on the K3 on my 40M end fed antenna. I know the SWR with this antenna is very high, but I can get the SWR down to 2.5 with my K2 ATU. The K2 is using ALT tune to get there taking a long time. I can understand that this could be a matter of chance, since the tuners use discrete components, rather than adjustable ones. I don't find much info on the KAT3 in the Installation Instructions or the K3 Owner's Manual. Sheet 3 of the KAT3 Installation Manual, Introduction, says Complete details for using the KAT3 are included in the KXV3 Owner's manual. I can't find a KXV3 Owner's Manual on the Elecraft site, only the Installation Instructions and I don't have a KXV3. Do I need a KXV3 to use my KAT3? Does the KAT3 have the equivalent of ALT tune on the K2? The KAT3 seems to give up after a few seconds, while the K2 tries real hard to get a good match. I can prune my end fed antenna but I may be missing something here and would like to know. That is the way that I ordered my K3 and it has worked very well. I am a CW only operator and I would never have considered ordering any rig without a 500 hz filter, in years gone by. For my use, since I am not a contest operator and run from pileups, I found the 2.7 khz filter just fine with the bandwidth set at CW widths. I have since ordered the 6 khz, 1 khz and 500 hz filters, just because. Also, the general coverage filter board because I didn't have a good general coverage receiver. I have read discussions on other reflectors involving the concept that under heavy QRN conditions, filters characterized as having steep skirts, with the resulting sharp shoulders, cause mixing products with the desired signal, and that the result is unpleasant to listen to when QRM is not a problem. For the operating I do, especially on the lower frequencies, QRN is usually the problem. I seldom have to deal with QRM over S9 and have decided to go with the 5 pole filters where they are available. But I am also fine with the 8 pole, 1 khz filter to experiment with. This seems to be my go to filter on CW these days but I will be comparing both. With a strong interfering signal close by, I can use the 1 khz filter, with its steeper skirts, along with shift, to eliminate the QRM. The shift seems to change the center of the passband in 50 hz steps. I usually have to fine tune with VFO A after getting close with the shift control. Not a problem, as I am always working split, since I prefer that to RIT. 73 Rick Dettinger K7MW ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] grounding K2
If I remember correctly, the base K2 came without the ground screw. Its been a long time. I think the ground screw came with the ATU. The K1 doesn't have a ground screw, even with the ATU. I am confused about the use of an RF ground with a balanced antenna. One of the advantages of a balanced antenna, verses an antenna that works with a ground such as a vertical, is efficiency. If I use an RF ground with a balanced antenna, am I losing efficiency. Especially if the ground is mediocre? I don't want to put down 60 radials for my center fed doublet. When I used my K1 or K2 with a battery and a balanced antenna, I had confidence that most of the power was getting radiated. Now I have a K3-100 with an Astron 35 M power supply and I am wondering if that has changed. The 35 M schematic shows that the 13.8v DC terminal is connected to the 120v AC supply system ground. This is continuous, overhead and underground, to the substation ground mat. This doesn't sound too bad for a 160 M vertical, however, I can't decide what effect this has on my CF doublet. Am I sending RF all over the neighborhood on the power lines? Is this why a BALUN is needed? Is my antenna efficiency and pattern different than when I used battery power? If I use the doublet and a BALUN, what do I use the ground screw for? It would be redundant to attach it to the AC ground as this is done thru the 13.0v supply cable. 73 Rck Dettinger K7MW On Apr 16, 2008, at 11:50 AM, Roger Stein wrote: Yes, good RF/safety practice, to the ground post on the back of the K2 provided for that purpose. I screwed mine to an aluminum bar with a rubber foot on the front. The rear of the bar had a hole that mated up with a hole in the K1 mounting bracket. I used the Elecraft supplied thumb screw to attach the bar to the bracket. It worked well, unless I wanted to carry the K1 without the bracket. I now use a GHD travel paddle attached to an aluminum plate. It is not as compact but I can use it with other radios or without the bracket I just hold the plate in my left palm. This can be done with other paddles and I find that it works well for me. An advantage of the Palm Mini paddles is that you can buy extra snap in mounting bases and attach then to different gear. Some have even attached them to tiles to use in the shack. The paddles simply snap into the bases and are ready for use. My only complaint with the Palm paddles is the slightly soft contacts. [Elecraft] K3 - 30m problem solved
If this had been an offshore rig, you would have had to send it to a factory authorized repair facility for warranty work. Since there was no fault, you would have had to pay a service charge and shipping both ways. Another advantage of buying an Elecraft rig. 73 Rick Dettinger K7MW === My K3 quit transmitting on 30m a week ago. All other bands were OK. After using up a lot of Gary's time, Wayne called me and his first question was, Which antenna is selected? I don't know how it happened, but 30m had gotten set to ANT2. One tap on ANT and I'm back alive on 10.1 MHz. Just like my K2, the K3 antenna selection is saved on a per band/per memory basis, something I should have known since I've had my K2/KAT100 for several years now. Re: [Elecraft] K3 noise blanker sure does the job.
Brett - I used to have the same problem with the street lights in my neighborhood. After about three years of service, high pressure sodium lamps start to cycle on and off. Every time they start up, they generate noise. I walk at night and in the winter I could see the lamps cycle. I would make a note of the address, and then email the information to the power company. It is important to be specific with information as the line service crew that gets the trouble slip will come out in the daylight and won't be able to see the problem. Our streetlights are serviced by the power company through a contract with the City. In your area, you may have to contact the City. Street lights should be maintained on a 3 year cycle but maintenance gets deferred due to budget considerations. Don't expect prompt response. This is low priority work. 73 Rick Dettinger K7MW On Jun 23, 2008, at 9:11 AM, Brett Howard wrote: I've got a HUGE problem in my area too. The cost of the mat and grounded wrist strap might not be a factor. They will be needed for any additions to the K3 at a later date. Building the K3 is like building the K2 after all the boards are completed. Just the final assembly part. By the time I built my K3, it was a welcome relief to construct it that way, as I have stuffed all the boards I want for some time, at least the ones with several hundred parts. 73, Rick Dettinger K7MW Although you save $200 by building it yourself, you really don't learn much in the process, and you have to spend about $25 for an ESD mat. If you have to ship it back to the factory, it will cost you $50 in the USA, and much more from overseas. There is no substitute for the final system tests that the factory-assembled units get. I use two transceivers with one antenna but I removed the protection plug (Arcplug) as I wasn't sure if that was the reason they didn't recommend the switch for multi transceivers. Re: [Elecraft] New K1 on the way - Band Module Questions
I am not sure if you are planning to change the two band modules often but if you are, I think it would be better to use an external tuner like the T1 rather than the optional internal tuner. It makes module swapping much easier. The K1 wasn't really designed for frequent module changes and its not just a matter of plugging a new one in, like with the Sierra. If you have the internal tuner installed, it needs to be removed to change band modules. I have often thought that if one could get along without the internal batteries, the speaker and the tuner, that there would be room for more bands on a larger board or multiple boards. But this would require switching changes to the firmware. Not something for mere mortals to play around with. Enjoy your new K1. I sure like mine. 73 Rick DettingerK7MW On Jul 24, 2009, at 8:13 PM, Gary W. Marklund wrote: Thanks, Sandy and Don. Looks like the two-band modules will give me the flexibility I want. Re: [Elecraft] Off-Topic - Straight-key speed cpontrol
The elbow should rest on the desk and the fingers on the key's knob. I couldn't disagree more! I have always taught as I was taught that the key is at the edge of the desk and no part of your body touches the desk, except perhaps the other hand. The forearm should be horizontal, sit up straight and relax the shoulders. It's very similar to typing. The telegraphers of old had to send for hours and this is the way they did it; I was one once. 73 David G3UNA That is the difference between the American and British systems. As I understand it, the British used this method, as I do, to avoid a glass arm. The Americans invented the bug for the same reason. I also use a bug. During WW2, Australian operators, accustomed to the British method, were frustrated when serving on American military aircraft, because the key was screwed to the rear of the operating table. The following is from Chapter 9, Part II of The Art and Skill of Radio-Telegraphy by William G. Pierpont, N0HFF, (SK): As the beginners progress, they adapt their keying style to whatever is comfortable to them individually. There are many variations in adjustment, depending on the particular key design details and the operator's preferences. The Australians and New Zealanders appear to have followed the British practice, but other European countries have not necessarily done so. Australians have said they found it very hard to send properly with the American keys -- with their flat topped key-knobs, located far back from the edge of the table -- as installed in air- ground-air stations during WW-II. They called these keying arrangements a flaming nuisance! In summary, with all these variations in basic and detail design, it seems obvious that there must be more than one way to design a good key and use it. Re: [Elecraft] K3 VFO B with K2 knob?
I bored out my K2 knob to fit the 1/4 shaft on my K1. I used a drill press and a 1/4 Dremel bit. I don't remember which one, but it was not a twist drill bit. The K2 knob is 6mm. 6mm is 0.236 in. so you need to remove .007 in. of brass from the wall. Since the knob would be hard to clamp, I would not use a twist drill bit. It would almost certainly grab and you would have a spinner. Better to grind. I drilled out a knob hole in a Junker straight key lever arm with a twist drill bit because I wanted 5mm threads and the bit grabbed the lever, which I had to retrieve from a new hole in the wallboard. I will like having general coverage and the tuning rate of the K3 is just right. The K2 rate of 1 khz per turn is too slow and the faster rate has big jumps in the pitch. Very annoying to me. The tuning knob is as good as any and there is more room on the panel. Low phase noise sounds good to me but I am not sure that I ever noticed any problem with my K2 in that respect. Passband tuning will be nice, also. I have never used DSP but i am interested in trying it. 73 Rick Dettinger K7MW ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Sidetone or zero beat
Most modern transceivers, including the Elecraft rigs, have virtually no output within 100 Hz or so of the carrier frequency, thanks to the excellent I.F. filters they use. That makes finding zero beat with the sidetone mandatory to avoid an error or 100 Hz or more in trying to tune onto the other station's frequency. Ron AC7AC == My Drake R4C had good IF filters but I could move the filter over to the carrier frequency with the excellent passband tuning and see the beat note on the (analog) S meter. The needle would go from a fast vibration to a slower one with more movement as I approched zero beat. No hearing needed. This was how I set the xtal calibrator to zero beat with WWV. Then , I could read a frequency to the nearest khz, something I could only dream of with older rigs. 73 Rick Dettinger K7MW ___ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I have often said that I could do about 90% of my operating with my Norcal 40A. But I disagree about the need for a new 40M monoband design. The simple analog design makes it a delight to use. No digital quantum jumps in the tuning. No operation manual or cheat sheet needed. The only change for home use would be to use the K2 mixer design and this would more than double the cost as it involves more than just subbing a TUF mixer. Compare the two designs. The power consumption would increase considerably. Mods to customize for user preference are easy. I like to use multiturn tuning pots like the K1 uses. Re: [Elecraft] K2 in 19inch Rack?
Has anyone attempted mounting a K2 into a 19 inch rack case either with or without the case? Its something i am contemplating doing. This might be a kit suggestion idea for Elecraft. A new front panel design that will mount in a 19 inch rack case. It certainly could enhance the ergonomics of the K2 and breath some more life into the K2 as a fixed station radio. Craig VK3HE === At just under 8 inches wide, you could get two K2's side by side. With all the controls mounted to the K2's front panel board, it would be hard to expand the size in order to use larger knobs with more clearance between them. Maybe new controls mounted on the new panel and wired to the K2 front panel. Would need to cut the square holes for the push buttons. Not for the faint of heart. And a hole for the real S meter that a larger K2 would sport. And a front panel mounted speaker. Maybe an analog clook removed from an old Hammarlund HQ-180 receiver. While we are at it, lets use those Hammarlund knobs, too. You wouldn't need to put one hand on the rig to keep it from sliding across the table top, while checking the filter settings. My friction coefficient is such that I can tap one button but not two at the same time without relocating the rig. Last week I entered the shack to find the K2 shoved tight aginst the wall. A small tree had fallen across a guy for one of my antennas and gave the coax a good yank. This was due to the same storm that took Elecrafts Net Control Operator first class off the air a week ago. A large enough rack panel might stand up to a tree of that size. My tree, not Kevins. Re: [Elecraft] Norcal Sierra - Wilderness Radio Sierra - Dans SmallParts
Why don't you just build a K1 instead? I have a Sierra here with all 9 band modules. It is a fine rig, although it needed various add-ons (DL-QRP-PA, KC2 Keyer/Counter) to make it nice to use. If I was starting again, I would get a K1 73, Dave G3VGR K2 #4783 === I have built both the K1 and Sierra kits. Advantages of Sierra are all 9 bands and ease of operation. No manual needed for this non digital radio. These are the radios I prefer to operate. No thinking necessary. And you ger a real RF gain control. It is actually an RF cut control but it does control the imput to the IF filter, unlike most modern radios. I think all other advantages go to the K1. Over twice the power. Many Sierra owners do mods to increase the power, with more or less sucess. Increasing the voltage to max is the easiest. The K1 has optional internal tuner. The tuning rate is far better. At least twice as good. And tuning is smoother. And with my kits, the K1 has been more stable. The conversion schemes for both are similar so I don't think there should be much preformance difference. If you build the Sierra, there are over 80 toroids to wind if all bands are included. If the Sierra had the K1 VFO and 5 watts out, I probably would prefer it to the K1, for home use, but it doesn't so I sold mine and kept the K1. Re: [Elecraft] K1 Bandwidth Question
It wouldn't seem to provide much advantage. The bandwidth of the four-pole crystal IF filter may be adjusted in three steps from about 200 to 850 kHz. The selectivity as designed is outstanding. Mike / KK5F K1 #175 since 11/2000 I usually use an outboard audio filter when operating at home. I agree that it is not needed for selectivity but it makes the sidetone sound like my K2 and I enjoy a clean CW note. I think one problem with a simple low pass filter is that the K1 has a wide range of possible sidetone pitch and a cutoff frequency that would help someone who uses a low pitch as I do would not pass a high one. Thus, filters would need to be adjustable or custom designed for the desired pitch. Re: [Elecraft] AGC Independent S-Meter?
For CW signals the solution was easy. One added a hard limiter to the audio channel. If a really strong signal was encountered without warning, it was clipped of at some preset maximum volume (below the threshold of pain, hopefully). Most operators used the limiter at all times in case a huge signal came on frequency. Ron AC7AC I wonder if it is possible to adjust the AGC on the K2 to only work on strong signals, to act as a hearing protection limiter only, with little action on all other signals. I understand this would work for CW only rigs. I like to use my K2 with AGC off, but value whats left of my hearing. Was that why old time commercial operators wore headphones forward of their ears? I am delighted to report K1 # 2208 came to life June 18th and can be found lurking on the low end of 20 and 40 meters been wanting one of these little jewels for a long time and after reading all the great reports and info here worked up my courage took the plunge ... am very happy with the results... now need to convience myself I can manage to build a K2... 73 de W8MLL - I have built both and would say that if you can build the K1, you can build the K2. It just takes about 3 times as long. The individual operations are about the same. If you install each component correctly, you will have a working radio. If not, you will learn alot about troubleshooting. 73 Rick Dettinger K7MW ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Watkins-Johnson (now audio filters)
Alex, I recently built an Idiom Press SCAF-1 audio filter and it was a vast improvement for my Icom-706IIG (it doesn't do much if anything for the K2). 73, Doug W6JD == I built the SCAF 1 and agree with one exception: I don't have good communication headphones and use Sony stereo 'phones. These are hifi and I get serious thumps from the K2, even with the AF 1 turned on. This is true with other rigs as well. The SCAF 1 removes this noise. I just need to make sure I don't overdrive the SCAF 1 as it is very sensitive to this. The filter really cleans up less than pure sidetone audio, too. I would like to get some good communication 'phones, without the microphone thingee. Any recommendations. I like the kind that seal out external noise. I like to use a bug but the damper clacking is distracting to me. 73 Rick Dettinger K7MW ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Antennas for use with Elecraft T1 ATU
I find the T1 does very well with a very high impedance. I end feed 1/2 wave wire connected right to the T1 with a counterpoise and it matches right up! I ran a test and the T1 can match a 4700 ohm resistor. So it's not bad with high resistance. 73 Karl == I wonder if an end fed half wave antenna is a high resistance if a counterpoise is used. This actually would look like a 3/4 wave (with a quarter wave counterpoise) offset fed antenna with no feedline. This would be a resonant antenna with a few hundred ohms at the feedpoint. Most of the radiation should be from the half wave section so should be an efficient antenna. 73 Rick Dettinger K7MW ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Anyone compare K2 RX with a classic rig?
Hi folks, Lately, I've been on the hunt for a 2nd receiver just for fun. I'm looking for Drake R-4B. During this time, I've been wondering if I'll want to put a full B-Line on the air or will just have an R-4B as a backup RX. The answer to that depends largely on how the R-4B (or A if that's what I end up with) sounds performs compared to the K2. I continue to be impressed with the K2 receiver. I'm wondering how it compares to the R-4* receivers or any other non-DSP boat anchor classic receiver from years gone by. I've already compared it to an Omni V and IC-735 and the K2 was better than either. We won't even talk about how much better the K2's RX is than the Century 21 or Century 22 :-) I had a very mint TS-830s but not at the same time as the K2 so I didn't get a chance to compare them. K2 vs. Drake R-4B; there are several things we know going in. K2 uses xtal filtering in the IF. R-4(A,B) use LC. K2 is single conversion, R-4* is triple. This suggests to me that the K2 will have better rejection of off freq signals and a better S/N ratio. Actual results are TBD. I'm sure at least one of you has a classic Drake or Collins rig that you've had a chance to compare to the K2. What say ye? - Keith KD1E - - K2 5411 - = Keith - I had an R4C and liked it alot. However, it can't compare with the K2 for receiver dynamics. Unless it has the Sherwood Engr. front end mods. More important to me is the QSK with the K2. The R4C used vox for keying. In my opinion, the greatest advantage to modern rigs is the QSK keying. Its like turning the lights on in a dark room. And as far as dynamic range goes, not only does the K2 have all the boat anchors beat, but I think the K1 does also. Recently, QST reviewed an old Collins and found an IMD dynamic range in the low 70's. The K1 is about 20 db better. However, you will enjoy using the Drake. Besides an ergo layout and real knobs, it has proper passband tuning (at the expense of several stages of conversion) and an analog S meter. I may be thinking of of a K3 here. 73 Rick Dettinger K7MW ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] Straight Key on my K2
One of these days I'm going to build a jack box that will have several jacks all paralleled together into a common 1/8 TRS output. That way I can plug in many things, mixing and matching keys as the spirit moves. - Keith KD1E - - K2 5411 - = Keith - I am going to do the same thing, but with a switch to be able to output to different rigs. Its importamt to be mindfull of grounds. Otherwise, the circuit might not be long enough (a little short), if the key bases touch. Ideally, I would like to do this in the keyer box. Right now, I have multiple jacks in my keyer box in parallel with my keyer output jack but I have to move plug to the rig de jour. I need to decide on RCA or mini phone jacks at the keyer. I am leaning toward RCA as I have had better luck with reliability that way. Someday.
