Re: [e-users] Battery Monitor module source of excessively high CPU usage trouble
On Thu, 21 Feb 2008 12:27:23 -0600 Paul Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I installed E DR17 yesterday (with the help of Prof K's RPMS and advice) and was troubled that it was using 40-80% of the system CPU, even if the PC was sitting idle. I started searching posts in this list and saw Raster's blog, which (2 years ago) showed that E with no modules was very fast and light. But on my system, it was bloated and sometimes slow. What the hell? I removed modules one by one until the CPU usage dropped into the normal (less than 5% range) and, guess what (drum roll please): The battery module was the culprit! In this Dell D820 laptop, I have 2 batteries. One is the usual, one is in the so-called external bay and it can be swapped for a CDROM. I should have realized E was having trouble with this because the battery monitor reported nutty values like 143% and it constantly told me my battery was almost out of power. Removing the battery module solves the CPU problem. What a relief. I realized I can run gnome-panel or the KDE kicker on one side, and the E shelf on the other, and can use the battery monitor from those other programs. I did remove the second battery and try the battery module again, but it still showed high CPU usage. So I don't know for sure what to conclude. Perhaps the whole framework of the motherboard chassis has it confused? If any developers want more information to investigate this, or you want me to file a formal bug report (in case this is not known already) I will do. pj The configuration for the battery monitor was changed recently to measure the update interval in ticks (not sure exactly what these are) rather than in seconds as it was before. The value wasn't changed though, so if your update interval used to be one second, it's now one tick, which is ridiculously high. Try increasing the update interval in the battery module config, that should fix the issue. Jesse - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. It kind of complements this other thing I've been planning to do, that's storing my app preferences, whenever possible, on scripts, using the command arguments, instead of editing the config files. This makes it much easier to restore them in a reinstall, and overrides any global config file that may be changed in an upgrade. I just have no idea how I can check if a program is running, althought I'm pretty sure it can be done. ps w -eo 'comm' | grep -qE ^${PROGNAME}$ that will return successfully if ${PROGNAME} is running and with a failure code if it is not (no guarantees on the portability of that... I know it works on Linux). As for the focus, it's probably possible, maybe I can use the signal used by mouse click on window title or Alt+Tab to bring up the program. Maybe someone around here could help me find exactly what it is. The problem isn't in sending the signal... that would be fairly trivial (as you mentioned, clicks and alt+tab do it already). Dano I already talked to raster about this... he was pretty sure it was some corner case of ICCCM hints or something like that. If you check out the WM_HINTS for it using xprop, you'll notice that it says that it wants to start iconified for whatever reason, and if you restart E, it will indeed be iconified. My guess (totally unfounded) is that E expects it to start iconified, but then doesn't do it, which makes it ignore the remembered position, size, and desktop (since it's supposed to start minimized anyway). Those themes are smaller, but still not as small (according to ps at least... however accurate that is). and doesn't include a lot of the features that Eterm has that aren't necessary. Most features can be compiled out, and even if they're not, the blocks of code for unused features are never even loaded into memory. This is a fallacy. I'm not just talking about code size here, but about what is available by default as well (meaning what all I have to disable). I have no use for the menu, or for the scrollbar (personally, I don't think they look that great anyway), or background images, or anything like that, and to get rid of them, I have to disable all of them. The xterm theme is the closest to usable for me, but it's still not perfect, and configuring it to be how I want it is far more effort than passing a few options to aterm, whose defaults are far closer to what I want. I'm not saying that Eterm is bad, because it really does seem like a nice program with lots of cool features... it's just not what I am looking for in a terminal emulator. uses about half of the resources that Eterm does. That's what the aterm folks would like you to believe. It's simply not true. This is just my experience from looking at what my system reports their ram usage as. I can see now that half is a bit of an overstatement, with the proper theme, but it's still less as far as I can tell. Is there any reason why this would be inaccurate? [e-users] Gentoo update script for e17
If you are running e17 on Gentoo like me, and like using the ebuild system for getting cvs updates, but don't like doing it manually, this script could be useful. It updates all of the necessary e17 packages (feel free to modify the list), and allows you to change things like CFLAGS so that you can run e17 with different CFLAGS (like -g) without having to remember to specify them. (Keep in mind, though, that CFLAGS don't stack.) It also only recompiles packages that have been updated in cvs since the last update, or, if you have genlop installed, ones that were compiled with different CFLAGS previously. Just stick this script in a cron job and get easy updates to e17 however often you want.
