I would agree that a lot of the action is CYA (though I might argue they
haven’t really covered anything), but that these actions needed to occur
anyway, though it would have saved lives and prevented the extent of the
problem had we done it earlier.

I am reminded of those lines from Leonard Cohen's "Anthem":

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget the perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in

The Covid-19 virus is a terrible thing. But we cannot let it beat us
down. We have to find ways to fight it, survive it, and move ahead in
spite of it, as we did for many other terrible diseases.

Each of us should ask ourselves, "What can I do?" If you're a health
care worker, your options are clearer. The rest of us can simply hunker
down and *not* do X and Y and Z until it's over; but that amounts to
doing "nothing".

I for one am not going to sit home and do nothing. If I can't improve
one part of the future, I'll find ways to improve some other part of
life where I *can* have an impact! We'll get through this.

So, I see Bruce's comment not as saying he'll do nothing; but rather
that he'll keep doing what he *can* do, despite the epidemic.

Stay safe,
Lee Hart

When the yahoos with their gigantic jacked-up coal-rolling pickup trucks
hassle us for our EVs, now we can remind them that we're making their fuel
cheaper by reducing the demand for it.

Do I really have to say this? The reason for the crash in petroleum prices
is the Covid-19 pandemic. All around the world, people are staying home.

In many places, they have no choice in the matter. They face arrest and/or
fines if they leave their homes without solid justification. In France, for
example, any resident going out has to carry a document stating his or her
purpose. The police are checking. If the person doesn't go where he says he
will and/or do what he says he needs to, he's subject to a fine.

Meanwhile, Russia and Saudi Arabia are panicking at plummeting crude sales.
They're trying to make up for the low prices with production volume, which
drives prices even lower.

The skies are blue again over China, too. But what a price to pay.

Re: [EVDL] more: How Coronavirus (COVID-19) is affecting EVs ...

2020-03-18 Thread Robert Bruninga via EV
I am amazed at how wrong we were. We always thought that the scarcity of
Oil would make the consumer price so high that EV's were inevitable.

Now the reality is that the price is so low that it is not economical to
frack or drill for it.

Eventually, the price will be low because no one will take it. (but then
the ICE owners will just keep on going...)

Oh well.

Ridiculous.

There is a GLUT of low-priced oil, and the strategic reserves are being
replenished.

Availability of fuel is national security issue.

No doubt they do. Not many other EV manufacturers have comparable
experience and reputation.

Nissan has experience, but a sullied reputation from their early battery
problems.

However, it appears to me that their sister label Renault has been more
cautious, has made better choices, and is overall more dedicated to EVs in
principle.

This seems to be paying off for them as their Zoe is profitable, and Renault
is staying well toward the top of EU EV sales.

In January, the Zoe was Renault's second largest selling vehicle worldwide,
which by itself is an accomplishment.

That month, Renault sold over 10,000 EVs worldwide (12% of their sales)
including 9,873 Zoes. That's pretty respectable for an EV that isn't even
offered in North America. At least in France and the UK, Renault dealers
are discounting, making the prices quite competitive.

Tesla just squeaked past the Zoe worldwide, taking first place with 10,013
Model 3s.

Nissan Leaf was in third place at 4,967 units, pretty good considering that
the press keeps knocking it.

The Peugeot 208 EV landed 7th at 3,897 cars, a surprisingly strong month for
a brand new EV. Its 50kWh battery is slightly smaller than the Zoe's and
its range a bit less, but the two are quite comparable in fitment and list
price, and to some extent it comes down to which brand you feel more
attached to.

Despite that good worldwide showing, Tesla is not doing well in Europe. If
you look at that market only, the Tesla 3 falls to 15th place, with just
1,517 cars. None of Tesla's other models is even in the running in Europe.

IMO Tesla has badly misjudged the EU market by not shipping lower cost,
lower range Model 3s. Last time I looked, the cheapest 3 was the LR model
going for 57,900 euros.

The LR is a nice car, with insane range. But when you can get a battery-
lease Zoe for about 1/3 the Tesla's price, with a real world 350km of range,
it's surprising that Tesla sold as many as they did.

Tesla needs to get more in tune with what EU buyers want and need, because
the future of EVs lies there, not here in the US.

On the other hand, with most major EU nations in viral lockdown, right now
nobody there is buying vehicles, either EV or ICEV. I expect that the
economic wasteland resulting from this chaos will depress all vehicle sales
for a long, long time.

Re: [EVDL] DC charging damages EV packs (?fact or anti-EV-hype?)

2020-03-18 Thread Peter C. Thompson via EV

Hi Willie,

When I was studying the battery technology about 10 years ago, the
assumption was that fast DC charging would only go up to 80% SoC. Above
that, you had to reduce power going into the battery significantly in
order to avoid damage. Having talked to several power engineers at my
current company, this has not changed.  If you watch your power
consumption over time, you'll be able to see this ramping.  Oh,
something else Tesla does is use air conditioning to keep the batteries
cool.  Lots of times I'll walk past a row of charging Teslas and hear
their aircon running.

Tesla does appear to understand their technology, and takes good care to
keep it working.  Can't say the same for other manufacturers...although
I'd be very happy to be corrected.

Cheers, Peter

I've thought about this while supercharging my Tesla.  There are
situations where I would be ok using a supercharger a little slower
than full bore with the goal of reducing battery damage.  For
example, if we wanted to have a leisurely meal while charging.  I
know that occupies a supercharger longer, but it also doesn't damage
the battery as much.  Right now, there doesn't seem to be a method to
reduce Tesla supercharging speed, right?

You can slow the battery charge a bit by running your climate. Open
windows and run heat full on.  It's not worth the trouble. With
Teslas, SuperCharging is just not a significant issue.  Tesla has said
so and those Tesloop cars went hundreds of thousands of miles charging
nearly solely on SuperChargers.

It seems Tesla does a good job of preserving the batteries in the face
of what might be termed "abuse".  Though I use SuperChargers only on
trips.  My 2013 S has 133k miles and has seen a steady decline of
SuperCharge power.  Down from ~120kw to around 80kw now.  My 2018 3
with only 30+k miles still charges at up to 140kw where available;
I've never encountered a working 250kw SuperCharger, only 120kw and
150kw.  Neither car has alarming capacity reduction.

I work on the assumption that battery damage is proportional to the
time spent at 100% charge level.  When I feel I might need a 100%
charge, I top off within an hour of departure.  I have seen people set
up a 100% charge the night before departure, leaving the car at 100%
for as long as ~8 hours.
