Hello.

An optional answer:
Application that requires mapi client on the server.
For example: FAX application, anti virus that doesn't work via AVAPI, BLB
backup solution,
and others, that I may not say in public ;-)

Anyway, among many replies I got, none of them was an answer to my question.

 Hanji San,

i bet dinner of your choice in San Francisco that you've never heard a
profound discussion surrounding the value of installing a mapi client on
an
exchange server. further, even ms says the legacy app is supplied as is
with no product support... clue.get! why go out of your way to add
instability to your system? okay, let me ask the question another way,
what
value are you providing to your system by considering this? if you can
answer that, I for one will test it with you.

Where is this guy's tech buddy?!

Windows Messaging is indeed a MAPI client. But it is
NOT an Exchange Server client. It's the same thing as
that Exchange that shipped with Windows 95. It's a
POP3/SMTP or MS Mail client. That's all. It would be
very stupid to install that on an Exchange 2000
server. Of course, given your prior posts, that
probably won't dissuade you, but I've done my due
  diligence.

Dear all

If I can have your expertise opinions for a moment.

What is the best software that can handle:

1. Scan all emails for viruses
2. Scans emails for certain words or attachments so it is held on our server
waiting for an admin to send it on if appropriate
3. Adds a disclaimer
4. Archives all incoming and outgoing emails with an easy to search
facility

We are currently on exchange 5.5 on and NT4 server.

Thank you for you advice and help

Outlook 98 does not support distribution lists in the contacts folder. You
need Outlook 2000 or higher.

Subject: Cannot Edit Address Lists

I'm brand new to Exchange so forgive me if I'm dense. We are using
Exchange 2k on a Win2k box w/Outlook 98 clients. Win2k is up to date but
I still need to install SP 1 on Exchange.

We had lost our Linux mail server and so I had to rebuild all of my users
on the server end and then reconfigure each machine at the client end. I
imported thier .pst files into thier exchange mailboxes and the .pab files
into thier contacts folder. This moved thier Address Book entries into
Contacts. Thats not a real problem but when we go into Outlook Address
Book or try to add an entry to Contacts we get a new entry box that says
You cannot create entries for this address book.
This happens no matter which list we select. Since all of our personal
distribution lists did not import over to Exchange it has become a bit of
an annoyance.
I must be missing something. My gratitude in advance for any help
offered. Thanks.

I'm trying the Exmerge utility. It shows that users have email on the
server by the size listed, but when I move them into
the PST all it does is move the default folder names and it doesn't copy any
messages/contacts ect.. Just empty folders

any faq's about something like this? Or does anyone have any ideas? thanx

Trying to make PST's from Exch 5.5 SP3, on NT 4.0 SP6 using Exmerge 3.71

I have an exchange 5.5 sp4 on win2k sp2 server, we use OWA alot, I was just
trying to set up a public folder with contact items in it for a psuodo GAL,
but when in owa and trying to open it, I get an error saying this version of
OWA only supports your main contacts items, is this a configuration error or
normal?? If it doesnt work like this is their a way I can have a centrally
set up GAL for all users to view with all contact information for a user ???

Okay, maybe it's just a Monday morning and I haven't woken up yet, but I'm
not seeing exactly what the problem is with the attachment. Opens up just
fine for me, and, although I really don't like Courier and deplore the lack
of proper capitalization, that's a PEBKAM error...

FW: AusCERT Update - Possible Trojan Horse FIX_NIMDA.exe

2001-10-01 Thread Yanai . Peles

Hi all
This is a warning of what is actually more a malicious email program than a
virus or worm, but can still hurt the unwary. It is an email purporting to
be a fix for the nimda worm/virus, but is in fact a harmful program. If
you haven't heard of it yet, then you've heard now - be careful out there.

Cheers

Subject: AusCERT Update - Possible Trojan Horse FIX_NIMDA.exe

 -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

 Date: Mon, Oct 1 2001

 Dear AusCERT member,

AusCERT has received information about a potentially
dangerous email that may be attempting to initiate unwanted
action on computer systems by taking advantage of current
 awareness of the Nimda worm.

 Elias Levy of SecurityFocus (http://www.securityfocus.com/)
has reported the existence of an email message that
spuriously claims to originate from SecurityFocus' ARIS
system and TrendMicro, containing Anti Nimda Software. This
message has what appears to be a trojan horse executable
program called FIX_NIMDA.exe attached. Due to its similarity
to the free Nimda removal tool (FIX_NIMDA.com) published by
TrendMicro, recipients of the message may be tempted to
follow the instructions in this email and run the attachment.
AusCERT recommends that you do NOT run the attachment.

More information is available in the original message from
 SecurityFocus, available from:

 http://www.securityfocus.com/cgi-bin/archive.pl?id=75mid=2174
 56start=2001-09-28end=2001-10-04

Information about the Nimda worm, as well as the genuine
Nimda removal tool, are available from TrendMicro at:

 http://www.antivirus.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName
=PE_NIMDA.A

As always, AusCERT urges system administrators to inform their users about
proper precautions with regards to handling email attachments.

AusCERT recommends that sites should update and check their virus defences
and either delete or do not open any unsolicited email messages or
attachments that resemble those described above. System administrators and
users are additionally urged to ensure that the latest Anti-Virus software
is installed and that it is using the most current up-to-date virus
databases.

The AusCERT team will be monitoring any new developments on this issue and
will release updates as they become necessary.

Regards,

The AusCERT Team

Hello.

An optional answer:
Application that requires mapi client on the server.
For example: FAX application, anti virus that doesn't work via AVAPI,
BLB backup solution, and others, that I may not say in public ;-)

Anyway, among many replies I got, none of them was an answer to my
question.

i bet dinner of your choice in San Francisco that you've never heard a

profound discussion surrounding the value of installing a mapi client

exchange server. further, even ms says the legacy app is supplied as

is with no product support... clue.get! why go out of your way to

what

Where is this guy's tech buddy?!

Windows Messaging is indeed a MAPI client. But it is
NOT an Exchange Server client. It's the same thing as
that Exchange that shipped with Windows 95. It's a POP3/SMTP or
MS Mail client. That's all. It would be very stupid to install
that on an Exchange 2000 server. Of course, given your prior posts,

that probably won't dissuade you, but I've done my due
  diligence.

I agree don't kill that old server right away.

I have done this twice recently and between the Technet Articles and Ed Move

powersuppply that decided to let the smoke out of it. But not an exchange

I never experienced any pitfalls, but let me offer a piece of advise.
Turn the server off for a week or so. Examine your event logs, look for
issues, etc.
When you are 100% satisfied that you are good, then remove it.

Subject: Removing the First E5.5 Server in a Site

Hello all...I'm new to the list and relatively new to Exchange. Nice to
see a list with some humor!

My environment is a small, single NT4 domain. I've purchased 4 new
servers and want to retire the existing boxes. E5.5 runs on one of the
old boxes and was the first server in the site. I have installed E5.5
on a new server in the same site. I haven't moved any of the
mailboxes to the new server. BTW, all servers are NT4, Post SP6a rollup.
Exchange is SP4.

I've gotten the articles from TechNet regarding removing a first server
and plan to follow those instructions. My question is, has anyone done
this before? And if so, are there any pitfalls I should be aware of?

Thanx.

IMC and DNS for outbound mail

2001-10-01 Thread Nizar El-Assaad

Hello

I am using Windows NT Server 4.0/sp6a, with Exchange Server 5.5/sp4. I have
noticed on several installations (most of them with dial-up connection to
the ISP) that if I configure outbound mail to use DNS, it fails to resolve
the host name of the destination domains. In this case, I am forced to
forward all mail to the ISP's SMTP server. Is this a normal behavior? Is
there a workaround to avoid it?

Best Regards

That was a look it up first before you ask. Otherwise you are bound to
get some comments like, I'm not your personal support center, but if
you really want to know, call PSS and ask them. For only $250 they'll
be most happy to send you a fax detailing how this would be
accomplished.

2001-10-01 Thread Shields, Anthony

As sarcastic as it is. It is interesting, if one presumes, that the
very machines we're mentioning were in fact our first 'computers'. For
me, reading your emails is like walking down memory lane...TRS-80's ,
TI-99a? Or 994a?, TRS-80's with 384K of RAM, etc...

RE: ADC makes me go hrmmm..solved?

2001-10-01 Thread Morrison, Gordon

Apparently a Recipient Update Service needs to be built for each site?
This is a single domain, so you wouldn't think it necessary. Once we started
doing this though, two way org level replication worked. Does this seem
obvious to people, should I go feed myself to Narthyloptep (Cthulhu should
feed on better) as a low calorie, low brain snack? or is this just one more
example of a setting that you only find out about if you want to pay extra
(via time and effort, helpful places like this, or PSS) for a product that
works?

Thanks, but that isn't the case, I am creating users with such creative
names as e2kserver1, user1, e2kserver1, user2, etc. on the e2k servers.
Does anyone happen to know of a Q-note for safely ripping out ADC and
starting over? I suppose that I could rebuild the lab -again-, but it would
be nice to be able to just back up this one step and start fresh.

I started out with 2 way connectors, and when that didn't work, I tried
using 2 one way connectors using the same e2k server thinking it would allow
me to more clearly see where the process was breaking down. When that
didn't work I tried using a 1 way connector on one of the other e2k servers
hoping that would work. ugh.

Also, does anyone know of a q-note that would explain in great detail the
mechanism by which ADC works. I have found information about SIDhistory and
about LDAP, but nothing about its process, sort of:

step 1: connect to LDAP on 5.5, export list
step 2: connect to e2k, export list
step 3: compare fields x,y,z for matches, discard fields from both lists
where matches occur
step 4: massage 5.5 data for LDF import to e2k
step 5: massage e2k data to csv for import to 5.5
step 6: import data

This is my guess, but I would like to see it confirmed someplace.

BTW, the end goal of my testing is to try and prove the feasibility of
having a single 2 way ADC pulling from the ORG level of e2k and 5.5 and
dumping into a specified OU/site on the other side, creating enabled
accounts. It seems as though the tool has the capability to do this, and if
so, would prevent the needless creation of a bazillion trusts and a
bazillion individual site level ADC connections.

Could it be this - The users used to exist in the 5.5 org but have been
deleted? This will leave invisible tombstones of the users in 5.5 that
the ADC will not delete.

If this sounds like it might be you. Let me know and I'll show you how
to advance the tombstone deletion time closer that the 3-4 days min that
it will let you configure

In my lab I have set up two 1 way agreements. One pulls all items from
my
5.5 directory and deposits it in an OU called Legacy as appropriate.
This
is great because it saves me from building bunches and bunches of ADCs
to
each site in my ORG.

However...

When I try to build an agreement to take my w2k org and dump it into one
of
my 5.5 sites, I only get the users on the first site. It builds the
containers for the other sites and the system objects but no users. (I
do
have the 'users' check box checked.)

I have also tried to move the connector to other servers and build w2k
site
level specific containers to no avail.

Anybody else seen this or have any thoughts on other things I could
tweak?

Hello

I am using Windows NT Server 4.0/sp6a, with Exchange Server 5.5/sp4. I
have
noticed on several installations (most of them with dial-up connection
to
the ISP) that if I configure outbound mail to use DNS, it fails to
resolve
the host name of the destination domains. In this case, I am forced to
forward all mail to the ISP's SMTP server. Is this a normal behavior? Is
there a workaround to avoid it?

you doing a one-step or two-step operation?

If you're suspecting nimda, you probably should reinstall OWA. It doesn't
take long anyways. It looks like the IIS box is unable to locate root.asp,
which is the page that displays everything.

Cannot Edit Address Lists

2001-10-01 Thread Fisher, Jeff A.

I'm brand new to Exchange so forgive me if I'm dense. We are using
Exchange 2k on a Win2k box w/Outlook 98 clients. Win2k is up to date
but I still need to install SP 1 on Exchange.
We had lost our Linux mail server and so I had to rebuild all of my
users on the server end and then reconfigure each machine at the client
end. I imported thier .pst files into thier exchange mailboxes and the
.pab files into thier contacts folder. This moved thier Address Book
entries into Contacts. Thats not a real problem but when we go into
Outlook Address Book or try to add an entry to Contacts we get a new
entry box that says You cannot create entries for this address book.
This happens no matter which list we select. Since all of our personal
distribution lists did not import over to Exchange it has become a bit
of an annoyance.
I must be missing something. My gratitude in advance for any help
offered. Thanks.

RE: exmerge question

Just for kicks, can you open Outlook when logged in as the Service Account
and access all data in all mailboxes that you appear to be missing from the
PSTs? If so, can you successfully pull the data down to a PST that way?
Are any errors showing up in any of the logs from the ExMerge?

ExMerge is a real straight forward login based on Service Account Access
rights.

That was a look it up first before you ask. Otherwise you are bound

get

want to know, call PSS and ask them. For only $250 they'll be most

RE: OWA permissions

2001-10-01 Thread Don Ely

You should probably close down your CGI Scripts: CGI - Bdir.htr - The
file /scripts/iisadmin/bdir.htr allows a remote attacker to list
directories on your web server. This information could be used to
determine what type of software you have installed and might possibly be
vulnerable to attack.

My guess is an improperly configured IIS server to start, but since it's
not in front of me, I couldn't tell you.

I answered your question yesterday. Guess you didn't like the answer, eh?
Well, you still can't do it with Outlook 9x.

Subject: Cannot Edit Address Lists

I'm brand new to Exchange so forgive me if I'm dense. We are using
Exchange 2k on a Win2k box w/Outlook 98 clients.
My gratitude in advance for any help
offered. Thanks.

I can log into them. My problem I have is a handfull of the mailboxes show
the home server being the new server, so I can't get into their old email
boxes.. The old email box was not moved to the new server when the new
accounts were made so I want to go into the edb and get the files manually.

RE: Win 2K and Exchange 2K

2001-10-01 Thread Soysal, Serdar

Man I remember the first computer I wrote my first Pascal program on. It
was an 8086 PC with no hard disk and 256K of RAM. The code had different
procedures for about 10 sorting algorithms and it was intended to be a tool
for comparing how different algorithms performed with certain data sets. It
had overwhelmed the CPU when I tried to compile it in Turbo pascal. Aah,
the good old days...

RE: exmerge question

2001-10-01 Thread Soysal, Serdar

I remember, is this the one where you actually tried to move the mailboxes
by changing the home server property in the Advanced tab? You will need to
change it back somehow. You can try directory export/modify csv/import
method. If that doesn't work you can always try to go into the Exchange
Admin in raw mode, which is very dangerous. A third option is to restore
from backup to a recovery server offline. I would call PSS if I were in
your shoes.

I would call PSS if I were in
your shoes.

Losing data after moving to Exchange server

2001-10-01 Thread Allison Wittstock

Hello,

One of my users switched from having .pst and Internet-only mode to Corporate
Workgroup mode, to utilize the new Exchange (2k) server. The mailbox size limit
on the Server is 300MB. She opened her .pst (in Outlook 2k) to move data from
it to her new mailbox. Her .pst exceeded the limit by a hundred MBs. The
last folder she moved was very large, and during this move she exceeded the
mailbox size limit. The move was unsuccessful, but now the data is neither in
the old .pst nor the Exchange mailbox Folder she was trying to move it to. In
her deleted Objects Folder there is the Folder she tried to move, but it is
empty, and none of the Sub-folders are there. Is there any way to recover this
data? Where is the data?

I hope that I used the correct terminology, as I am not working with English
language clients or Server.

Thank you,
A. Wittstock

Thanks

also low. You don't need no stinkin i386 class machines either.

Miami of Ohio was established in 1809, but due to the war (of 1812) did not
begin classes until 1824. Miami of Florida was chartered in 1925. Perhaps
they could have chosen a better name, like UF at Miami or something.

errors I had during upgrade to 5.5

2001-10-01 Thread Michael Ahlfont

I upgraded from exchange 5.0 to 5.5 sp 4 on Saturday. Thanks to Appendix c
in the exchange faqs. There were two errors before the end of the upgrade
that I had.
The first error was
self registration of dll c:\winnt40\system32\inetcomm.dll failed : 0d

The second error was processing file E:\server\setup\i386\\cdo.ins at or
near line 8 The specified procedure could not be found Microsoft NT
ID0xc002007f)

I clicked okay on both errors and the upgrade finished. I installed the sp 4
and the exchange server is working fine. I'm wondering if anyone has any
knowledge on these errors.

RE: Sircam Virus

2001-10-01 Thread Durkee, Peter

We're still getting all three, Sircam, Magistr, and Hybris. Interestingly, all three
of them show up in the notifications I get from Antigen as having either unknown or
spoofed senders. Because of this, Antigen isn't able to send out its alerts to the
people who are sending the messages, so, they probably aren't getting any messages
back telling them they're infected. Also, I don't think any of them actually use
Outlook to send out the virus, so it would be fairly easy for the infected computer's
owner to be blissfully unaware of the infection. I think this is the secret of their
longevity.

Monitor a user's mailbox

2001-10-01 Thread Mark Chandler

I have a user that consistently complains that mail doesn't reach him when
it has been sent.

I have been through the usual, sort order in Outlook, check the server
logs deal. My manager wants me to keep a week long log of all mail in and
out of his box on the server as a means of proving that his problems are
not an IS problem.

How would one go about setting this up on Exchange 2000?
I am aware of how to turn on message tracking, but I was wondering if
there is something more robust that I can run to produce this report.

TIA

Make a copy of the file, then run ScanPST on it. If it's successful. Try
importing the messages into exchange instead of moving them...

Subject: Losing data after moving to Exchange server

Hello,

One of my users switched from having .pst and Internet-only
mode to Corporate
Workgroup mode, to utilize the new Exchange (2k) server.
The mailbox size limit
on the Server is 300MB. She opened her .pst (in Outlook 2k)
to move data from
it to her new mailbox. Her .pst exceeded the limit by a
hundred MBs. The
last folder she moved was very large, and during this move
she exceeded the
mailbox size limit. The move was unsuccessful, but now the
data is neither in
the old .pst nor the Exchange mailbox Folder she was trying
to move it to. In
her deleted Objects Folder there is the Folder she tried
to move, but it is
empty, and none of the Sub-folders are there. Is there any
way to recover this
data? Where is the data?

I hope that I used the correct terminology, as I am not
working with English
language clients or Server.

Thank you,
A. Wittstock

We used the nimda removal tool at my location. It created changed the
permissions on all our shares resulting in over 400 users not being able

Has anyone setup the web monitor from the Exchange 2000 resource kit. I
have it installed on a server but the page does not pull in any servers
into the web page. There may be a file that I need to manually add the
servers to that I want it to monitor but if there is I can't find that
file. If anyone has set this up and has any words of wisdom on it I
would greatly appreciate it.

RE: Sircam Virus

2001-10-01 Thread Byron Kennedy

On that thought - Is anyone here using mailEssentials?

We are still getting pounded with Sircam also and are considering using this
mailEssentials on our win2k smtp server in the dmz to filter mail before
getting to Antigen on our smtp connector. The goal is to better filter mail
of spamming, AV, etc before getting to exch IMS. To that end, I'd
appreciate anyone's thoughts/experiences re this product.

thx for the feedback.byron

We're still getting all three, Sircam, Magistr, and Hybris. Interestingly,
all three of them show up in the notifications I get from Antigen as having
either unknown or spoofed senders. Because of this, Antigen isn't able to
send out its alerts to the people who are sending the messages, so, they
probably aren't getting any messages back telling them they're infected.
Also, I don't think any of them actually use Outlook to send out the virus,
so it would be fairly easy for the infected computer's owner to be
blissfully unaware of the infection. I think this is the secret of their
longevity.
