RE: Cannot Edit Address Lists
Outlook 98 does not support distribution lists in the contacts folder. You need Outlook 2000 or higher. S. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, September 28, 2001 3:21 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Cannot Edit Address Lists I'm brand new to Exchange so forgive me if I'm dense. We are using Exchange 2k on a Win2k box w/Outlook 98 clients. Win2k is up to date but I still need to install SP 1 on Exchange. We had lost our Linux mail server and so I had to rebuild all of my users on the server end and then reconfigure each machine at the client end. I imported thier .pst files into thier exchange mailboxes and the .pab files into thier contacts folder. This moved thier Address Book entries into Contacts. Thats not a real problem but when we go into Outlook Address Book or try to add an entry to Contacts we get a new entry box that says You cannot create entries for this address book. This happens no matter which list we select. Since all of our personal distribution lists did not import over to Exchange it has become a bit of an annoyance. I must be missing something. My gratitude in advance for any help offered. FW: AusCERT Update - Possible Trojan Horse FIX_NIMDA.exe
Hi all This is a warning of what is actually more a malicious email program than a virus or worm, but can still hurt the unwary. It is an email purporting to be a fix for the nimda worm/virus, but is in fact a harmful program. If you haven't heard of it yet, then you've heard now - be careful out there. Cheers Yanai Peles Regional IT Support Manager, CSIRO Mathematical Information Sciences Building E6B, Macquarie University, North Ryde, NSW 2113, Australia Ph: +61 293253176, fax +612 93253200, Mobile: +61416253176 E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://WWW.CMIS.CSIRO.AU/Yanai.Peles/ _ -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, 1 October 2001 4:36 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: AusCERT Update - Possible Trojan Horse FIX_NIMDA.exe -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Date: Mon, Oct 1 2001 Dear AusCERT member, AusCERT has received information about a potentially dangerous email that may be attempting to initiate unwanted action on computer systems by taking advantage of current awareness of the Nimda worm. Elias Levy of SecurityFocus (http://www.securityfocus.com/) has reported the existence of an email message that spuriously claims to originate from SecurityFocus' ARIS system and TrendMicro, containing Anti Nimda Software. This message has what appears to be a trojan horse executable program called FIX_NIMDA.exe attached. Due to its similarity to the free Nimda removal tool (FIX_NIMDA.com) published by TrendMicro, recipients of the message may be tempted to follow the instructions in this email and run the attachment. AusCERT recommends that you do NOT run the attachment. More information is available in the original message from SecurityFocus, available from: http://www.securityfocus.com/cgi-bin/archive.pl?id=75mid=2174 56start=2001-09-28end=2001-10-04 Information about the Nimda worm, as well as the genuine Nimda removal tool, are available from TrendMicro at: http://www.antivirus.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName =PE_NIMDA.A As always, AusCERT urges system administrators to inform their users about proper precautions with regards to handling email attachments. AusCERT recommends that sites should update and check their virus defences and either delete or do not open any unsolicited email messages or attachments that resemble those described above. System administrators and users are additionally urged to ensure that the latest Anti-Virus software is installed and that it is using the most current up-to-date virus databases. The AusCERT team will be monitoring any new developments on this issue and will release updates as they become necessary. Nice to see a list with some humor! My environment is a small, single NT4 domain. I've purchased 4 new servers and want to retire the existing boxes. E5.5 runs on one of the old boxes and was the first server in the site. I have installed E5.5 on a new server in the same site. I haven't moved any of the mailboxes to the new server. BTW, all servers are NT4, Post SP6a rollup. Exchange is SP4. I've gotten the articles from TechNet regarding removing a first server and plan to follow those instructions. My question is, has anyone done this before? And if so, are there any pitfalls I should be aware of? Thanx. IMC and DNS for outbound mail
Hello I am using Windows NT Server 4.0/sp6a, with Exchange Server 5.5/sp4. I have noticed on several installations (most of them with dial-up connection to the ISP) that if I configure outbound mail to use DNS, it fails to resolve the host name of the destination domains. In this case, I am forced to forward all mail to the ISP's SMTP server. Is this a normal behavior? Is there a workaround to avoid it? RE: ADC makes me go hrmmm..solved?
Apparently a Recipient Update Service needs to be built for each site? This is a single domain, so you wouldn't think it necessary. Once we started doing this though, two way org level replication worked. Does this seem obvious to people, should I go feed myself to Narthyloptep (Cthulhu should feed on better) as a low calorie, low brain snack? or is this just one more example of a setting that you only find out about if you want to pay extra (via time and effort, helpful places like this, or PSS) for a product that works? /Gordon -Original Message- From: Morrison, Gordon [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, September 26, 2001 9:16 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: ADC makes me go hrmmm... Thanks, but that isn't the case, I am creating users with such creative names as e2kserver1, user1, e2kserver1, user2, etc. on the e2k servers. Does anyone happen to know of a Q-note for safely ripping out ADC and starting over? I suppose that I could rebuild the lab -again-, but it would be nice to be able to just back up this one step and start fresh. I started out with 2 way connectors, and when that didn't work, I tried using 2 one way connectors using the same e2k server thinking it would allow me to more clearly see where the process was breaking down. When that didn't work I tried using a 1 way connector on one of the other e2k servers hoping that would work. ugh. Also, does anyone know of a q-note that would explain in great detail the mechanism by which ADC works. I have found information about SIDhistory and about LDAP, but nothing about its process, sort of: step 1: connect to LDAP on 5.5, export list step 2: connect to e2k, export list step 3: compare fields x,y,z for matches, discard fields from both lists where matches occur step 4: massage 5.5 data for LDF import to e2k step 5: massage e2k data to csv for import to 5.5 step 6: import data This is my guess, but I would like to see it confirmed someplace. BTW, the end goal of my testing is to try and prove the feasibility of having a single 2 way ADC pulling from the ORG level of e2k and 5.5 and dumping into a specified OU/site on the other side, creating enabled accounts. It seems as though the tool has the capability to do this, and if so, would prevent the needless creation of a bazillion trusts and a bazillion individual site level ADC connections. caffeineI think the coffee is starting to kick in./caffeine /Gordon -Original Message- From: Mike Putley [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, September 25, 2001 4:38 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: ADC makes me go hrmmm... RE: IMC and DNS for outbound mail
It would only be normal behavior if your DNS is messed up. That would be the first place that I checked. Stephen -Original Message- From: Nizar El-Assaad To: Exchange Discussions Sent: 10/1/01 7:23 AM Subject: IMC and DNS for outbound mail Hello I am using Windows NT Server 4.0/sp6a, with Exchange Server 5.5/sp4. Cannot Edit Address Lists
I'm brand new to Exchange so forgive me if I'm dense. Thanks. RE: OWA permissions
You should probably close down your CGI Scripts: CGI - Bdir.htr - The file /scripts/iisadmin/bdir.htr allows a remote attacker to list directories on your web server. This information could be used to determine what type of software you have installed and might possibly be vulnerable to attack. My guess is an improperly configured IIS server to start, but since it's not in front of me, I couldn't tell you. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Tener, Richard Sent: Monday, October 01, 2001 9:22 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: OWA permissions We have OwA installed for a while now but for some strange reason I think the nimda virus screwed things up. RE: Cannot Edit Address Lists
I answered your question yesterday. Guess you didn't like the answer, eh? Well, you still can't do it with Outlook 9x. S. -Original Message- From: Fisher, Jeff A. [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, October 01, 2001 12:20 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Cannot Edit Address Lists I'm brand new to Exchange so forgive me if I'm dense. Thanks. Losing data after moving to Exchange server
Hello, One of my users switched from having .pst and Internet-only mode to Corporate Workgroup mode, to utilize the new Exchange (2k) server. The mailbox size limit on the Server is 300MB. She opened her .pst (in Outlook 2k) to move data from it to her new mailbox. Her .pst exceeded the limit by a hundred MBs. The last folder she moved was very large, and during this move she exceeded the mailbox size limit. The move was unsuccessful, but now the data is neither in the old .pst nor the Exchange mailbox Folder she was trying to move it to. In her deleted Objects Folder there is the Folder she tried to move, but it is empty, and none of the Sub-folders are there. Is there any way to recover this data? Where is the data? I hope that I used the correct terminology, as I am not working with English language clients or Server. Thank you, A. RE: Sircam Virus
We're still getting all three, Sircam, Magistr, and Hybris. Interestingly, all three of them show up in the notifications I get from Antigen as having either unknown or spoofed senders. Because of this, Antigen isn't able to send out its alerts to the people who are sending the messages, so, they probably aren't getting any messages back telling them they're infected. Also, I don't think any of them actually use Outlook to send out the virus, so it would be fairly easy for the infected computer's owner to be blissfully unaware of the infection. I think this is the secret of their longevity. -Peter -Original Message- From: Osborn, Joel [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, October 01, 2001 7:12 To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Sircam Virus Actually, we are getting hit with a ton of Magistr Joel K. RE: Nimda Removal tool
I had the same problem, but that was with the first release of the tool. Now the latest has the option of turning the shares off... -Original Message- From: Steven Conley [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, September 28, 2001 2:27 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Nimda Removal tool We used the nimda removal tool at my location. It created changed the permissions on all our shares resulting in over 400 users not being able to access shared locations on our servers. Web Monitor from reskit...
Has anyone setup the web monitor from the Exchange 2000 resource kit. I have it installed on a server but the page does not pull in any servers into the web page. There may be a file that I need to manually add the servers to that I want it to monitor but if there is I can't find that file. If anyone has set this up and has any words of wisdom on it I would greatly appreciate it. RE: Sircam Virus
On that thought - Is anyone here using mailEssentials? We are still getting pounded with Sircam also and are considering using this mailEssentials on our win2k smtp server in the dmz to filter mail before getting to Antigen on our smtp connector. The goal is to better filter mail of spamming, AV, etc before getting to exch IMS. To that end, I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts/experiences re this product. thx for the feedback.byron -Original Message- From: Durkee, Peter [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, October 01, 2001 12:46 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Sircam Virus We're still getting all three, Sircam, Magistr, and Hybris.
