RE: Off-topic changing SMTP port on Exchange for spam filtering.

2003-11-03 Thread Robert Blomquist
I was just taking a look at Xwall and it does in fact look pretty good.

Questions:
What operating system are you running it on?
Does it need a separate SMTP server to be running or does it provide its own?
If it needs another, what do you suggest?

Thanks,

We have used Xwall for about a year. It is very good. It is one guy I
think. He is very responsive.

It seems like when you ask if something can be done, it gets put in the
next release ...

I think he is Austrian , so be a little careful with his choice of
good/bad english words ...

We use Bayesian filtering on it. I would suggest that you first get your
other filters in place and are happy with them before you start
collecting stats to start your bayesian filtering. Then, once it is
working, review the emails and the stats (in .csv files) and set your
level a touch higher than what you think it should be ...

You can also edit the NDR's ... Does virus scanning ... Etc, etc, etc,
you name it ...

I also took the .csv's and the collected the blocked messages and made
an .asp site for my users, so that they could log in through a web page
and unblock email addresses (it also does unique whitelists for
individual users ...)

For the price, it is great ... Probably be bought out soon ...

Let us all know what you think of Xwall if you get it running. I
looked at their web page and it's only $350 per server (any number of
users). If it works that sound very reasonable.

Sorry if this came through twice. Had to change the text type and

This is a little off-topic. We are about to deploy XWall for Exchange
on our front end IMC relays. One of the requirements is that we change
the smtp port for Exchange on the IMC's to use 24 since XWall will use
port 25 and get the messages first. I guess my questions are:

For users using POP or custom applications that are using the Exchange
IMC as their relay host, how will changing the ports affect them? Have
I just disabled POP by installing XWall?

We have locked down all unused ports so I guess I need to open port 24
up to the front end and back end servers as well.

Is there anything I need to be careful about or any other gotchas that I
should know.

RE: Off-topic changing SMTP port on Exchange for spam filtering.

2003-10-30 Thread Paul Hutchings
It does work, we've used it for a year or so. I've not used the bayes
filtering but the rest is very flexible, also it's written by a small
company (I suspect it's one guy) and I've found him really quick with
replies to questions, and very amenable to adding sensible features to later
versions.

The one thing I do like about it is the logging - we use 5.5 and smtp
logging sucks, this logs everything to text, and the important info to csv
and all sort of stuff.. well worth a try IMHO.

regards,
Paul

Users mail could potentially get marked as spam I would think as they will

What do you mean, can everyone actually do that? Osirusoft is the one
that added the * to their DNSBL, so anyone who subscribes to them will
now block all mail. Best you can do is contact the admin of the place
your mail is getting rejected at, and let them know.

Chris,

How were you able to determine that the drive mapping was causing the
problem? We have a similar problem here, and can't find anything in the
event logs that pinpoints the problem. It would be easy enough to test
by disconnecting drive mappings, but I'd be happier if there was
something definitive to verify that the drive mapping is causing the
lock out.

Thanks.

This happened to us here. We found out that their drive mapping were
still trying to authenticate with the old passwords. So we disconnected
them and then recreated the drive mappings. Problem solved

Andrey,
I ran into this same issue shortly after we upgraded our domain
to Win2k AD last summer. Funny thing was, all the lockouts were coming
from Windows 98 workstations. I could never put my finger on it, and in
desperation finally disabled account lockouts. However, invalid
password attempts were still being logged in the event view.

Shortly after moving the domain over to native mode, the problem
all but disappeared. Now that the majority of our desktops are running
Win2k, I'll probably re-enable the account lockout policy and monitor
the event logs.

Strangest thing, and to this day my must frustrating mystery.

Hello everyone.

In our Windows 2000 Active Directory, we implemented a lockout policy
that would lock someone's account after 5 unsuccessful logon attempts.

Now we are having a rash of incidents where people's accounts get locked
out just like that. The users do not make any unsuccessful logon
attempts, they just login normally and then the account is locked. I
checked and these users are not running any services or scheduled jobs
under their accounts either.

What could this be?

This is a little off topic. Running Scanmail 3.80 engine 6.510 pattern 587.
When a external user sends an infected message to lets say 30 users and only
one is on our Exchange, scanmail cleans that message but sends a
notification message back to all 30 users stating it cleaned it?

Man that doesn't sound right to me. I spoke to Trend and they said that is
how it works and it always worked that way. I recently customized the
recipient notification message to contact our help desk but I didn't think
that external users would get it. Anyone else run into this issue?

 Somewhat off topic.

We recently upgraded our servers to Windows 2000 server with SP3 running
Exchange 5.5 SP5. The systems have DLT 7000's attached to them and I have
a
recovery server that I use for restoration that also has a DLT 7000.

After upgrading the boxes to 2000 SP3 (including my recovery box), the
backup tape drive on the recovery system will not recognize the any tapes
from the other systems. I put the tape in and I get use cleaning tape.
Looked at drivers and they are the same. Rebuilt the system twice now no
luck. I'm using an Adaptec driver and I lowered the speed to 20 and that
didn't do it. I verified both systems are at the same service pack. My
test box is pretty old, but it worked with NT. I took the tapes back over
to the production box, and it see's them fine. If I take some older tapes
and put them in, the DLT 7000 at least recognizes that there is old tape
and
 allows me to format them.

 Any ideas would be appreciated.

I'm trying to setup an auto reply for our HR dept to use when they
receive resumes from outside the company. I've setup the out of
office reply which only works when a user sends an initial message.
They never get a 2nd reply unless I turn the attendent off and then
 on.

Is there a better why to handle this? and How?

RE: Off-Topic Question

2002-06-25 Thread Andrew Hitchcock

What you can do, however, is enable automatic replies / forwards / oof
etc. to a particular domain.

Auto Replies to the world are a bad idea in general, but particularly if
you are concerned about SPAM. Just think of an auto-reply as an
auto-confirm to the next piece of spam you receive. Spin it that way and
most users will agree that they can do without them.

That said, you can often make a business case for enabling automatic
replies / OOF to trusted domains such as vendors, suppliers, major
customers, etc.

You would do this under Global Settings | Internet message formats

I was told that there might be a way to keep the CTRL-ALT-DEL and/or

Does anyone know where I can find a way to do this with Windows 2000

Thanks,

To resolve a problem with user's inability to download server-side Outlook
Forms, I have to delete two files from the profile folders of every
profile on every Windows 2000 Pro client currently deployed. This path is
static with the exception of the user's name: c:\documents and
settings\user name\local settings\

Does anyone have any ideas of how to automate this task so Help Desk want
have to deploy SneakerNet to correct the problem? We have SMS deployed.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Off Topic - Seeking Auotmation Method: SMS, Scripts, etc.

2002-03-27 Thread Jon Hill

If you wanted to do it all at once rather than wait for users to log in,
you could write an adsi script that would loop through every machine name
found in the AD (or SAM), and then use fso to loop through every folder name
found under documents and settings. Something like:

sub main
  set wsh=createobject(wscript.shell)

  set fso = CreateObject(Scripting.FileSystemObject)
  Set adsDomain = GetObject(WinNT://MyDomain)

   For Each adsComp In adsDomain
if adsComp.class=Computer then
Set fsoFolder=fso.GetFolder(\\ adsComp.Name
\Documents and Settings
for each fsoUserFolder in fsoFolder.SubFolders
fso.deletefile(fsoUserFolder.Path \local
settings\file1
next
 end if
  next
end sub

The above is real bare-bones and probably won't work without tweaking. I
would strongly recommend error trapping, or else you'll error out at the
first machine that's disconnected. You should also create a log file that
lists describes each action completed and whether or not an error was
recorded--makes it easier to determine which machines weren't touched.

Have you looked at www.myITforum.com? This is Rod Trent's web site for all

I am quite new to Exchange and Exchange Clients like Outlook.
We are using Exchange 5.5. Any documentation I've seen
talks about the need to configure with secure RPC if
encryption is desired between the client and server.

Here is what puzzles us. We have not selected any
form of encryption. However, when we read email from the
inbox we notice that there is no human readable text
within the packets on the LAN.

 Can someone please explain.

 Thank you,

I am quite new to Exchange and Exchange Clients like Outlook. We are
using Exchange 5.5. Any documentation I've seen talks about the need
to configure with secure RPC if encryption is desired between the

Here is what puzzles us. We have not selected any
form of encryption. However, when we read email from the
inbox we notice that there is no human readable text
within the packets on the LAN.

 Can someone please explain.

Subject: Off topic: Message Number 54101 (was Connector for Lotus Notes)

Dear All,

Sorry to bother you again with this Connector for Lotus Notes connecter
thing (@#%* :-(. Still no e-mail flow from Exchange to Notes. Number of
messages stuck in the Outbound to Notes queue: 3408 (and counting).

When I try to start the Convert Exchange to Notes process (Exchange
Connectivity Administrator, Start One Process option), it stops after a
few seconds (Every other process is running and Idle). The Log Browser
displays 4 yellow (level 2; warning) messages:

LME-NOTES-MEXNTS 41409 The NOTES Server the NMC is connected to is Notes
Build Version: 147
LME-NOTES-MEXNTS 41410 The local Notes platform the NMC is running on is
Notes Build Version: 147
LME-NOTES-MEXNTS 54101 Error {Unrecognised transform} Exchange to Notes
Attachment XFM failed.
LME-NOTES-MEXNTS 54101 An ABNORMAL SHUTDOWN request has been received.

Now TechNet tells me in Q197870 of message number 54006: Error {GRC:2828}
Notes to Exchange Attachment XFM failed

Their solution is the good old please install the latest service pack
one. In Q197870 their talking about SP3. This Exchange box is running on
SP4, both lsntsmex.exe and lsntshc.dll version being 5.5.1960.8.
Anyone out there who knows what's going on?
Any help is highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

RE: Off topic: ScanMail AVAPI notifications and tracing?

2001-12-18 Thread Hunter, Lori

I'm running only MAPI mode and I can't get the notifications to come to me
either. When I try a test at the server I get a MAPI error. I installed an
old Exchange mapi client and that didn't help. I made sure there was a
valid scanmail profile on the server and that didn't help. Trend wanted me
to install a bunch of debug stuff on the server and that isn't going to
happen since it's a beastly cluster (ugh) and now we're in freeze anyway.

Exchange 5.5 SP4, ScanMail 3.52

We upgraded to ScanMail 3.52 and are running in both AVAPI and MAPI mode. I
understand that running AVAPI, you lose the sender/recipient information for
viruses caught in the log files. I'm a little confused on my testing on how
notification works. I sent a test virus to a mailbox on our system and I
did not receive a notification that I sent a infected message. The
recipient, on the other hand, did receive a message from my account and had
a text file entitled Virus1_Detected_and_Removed_virusname.txt.

Shouldn't I have received a message as well. I have the real time scan set
to send message to sender,recipient,administrator.

One other question. Since I do not get the actual sender notifications in
the log files now, I cannot determine where/who may be triggering an
outbreak. Since the recipient gets a attachment with the
Virus1x.txt message is there a way to track this through the MTA
tracking log files. Is there a diagnostic key on the MTA that will include
the attachment name sent on messages?

RE: Off topic: ScanMail AVAPI notifications and tracing?

2001-12-18 Thread Martin Blackstone

Under Notification, Real Time Scan, You need to put your name in ScanMail
Administrators. Then you will get emails whenever a virus is nailed.

As for the other with the AVAPI, this is a limitation of the AVAPI. My
suggestion would be to use Scanmail 3.7x which uses ESE based scanning.

a text file entitled Virus1_Detected_and_Removed_virusname.txt.

Under Notification, Real Time Scan, You need to put your name in ScanMail
Administrators. Then you will get emails whenever a virus is nailed.

As for the other with the AVAPI, this is a limitation of the AVAPI. My
suggestion would be to use Scanmail 3.7x which uses ESE based scanning.

This is going to be a little off topic, but I thought I would post it in
case someone ran into it as well.

I have ScanMail moving infected files. One of the files that was moved into
the \VIRUS area was a FUN.MP3 that is listed as a short cut. I cannot
delete due to a sharing violation (believe ScanMail still has locked). Once
you try to delete or look at the attributes, your NT workstation jumps up to
100% CPU utilization for EXPLORER. Even disconnecting the mapped drive does
not clear EXPLORER.EXE and the only way to get your workstation back is to
reboot.

I duplicated this on 3 NT workstations. Two running NT 4.0 sp6a one running
sp5. Took me 3 days to determine what was causing my workstation to go
crazy. I sure won't clear the areas from the server console. I can just
see me killing the box!

RE: Off topic: EXPLORER.EXE 100% CPU

2001-12-18 Thread Allan Johnson

err, stop scanmail services and try. Will be just your luck the latest
melissa will come out during that 5 minute window.

What version of scanmail? Did it move the file based on infection or
attachment blocking? You say the mp3 file is listed as a shortcut, it has a
.lnk extension or just the mp3 extension?

Adding mp2;mp3 to your attachment blocking list may be a good idea,
especially if the file is locked for some reason by scanmail scanning the
attachment. See past thread Attachment Nazi Mrs. Jennifer Baker had the
bomb (read atom) list of attachments to stop.

Does anyone have some sort of hack tool that will allow you to change the
local admin password on a workstation and get into the OS? We took a machine
off the domain but didn't realize that the local admin password was not set
to the company default password.

Also is there is way to just load the windows 2k cd in and restart the pc
and have it so that it only does a reinstall and does not format the drive?

Thanks,

RE: Off topic...apologies...

2001-12-05 Thread Murphy, Brian

I posted some stuff earlier that touched on this subject. I too was
impacted by the ATT tragedy. However, I am using the @Business service and
was told that it was a independant of ATT @ Home Service. However, I was
not aware that they were using Excite as a portal either.

Anyway I've had to reconstruct my WAN using 2 NAT boxes (DHCP) and an NT
4.0 Proxy Server. This is my only suggestion. Purchase a cheap NAT box
like Linksys or construct one out of NT 2000 or NT 4. Have the DHCP address
assigned to the WAN interface of the NAT Box. Give the external Proxy
server nic an invalid address like 192.168.1.2 the gateway would be
192.168.1.1 (LAN Side of NAT Box). This will get your proxy server up and
running. However, you will need to make several adjustments on your outside
DNS once you know your DHCP assigned address. The cool thing about the
Linksys and other NAT boxes is that it supports port forwarding also.

I seem to remember that this may have been touched on before.

ATT Broadband has taken over my cable modem services (at home, not work.)
I used to have a static IP from the previous provider but now it's DHCP. I
want to maintain my home network which is: NT4 server with Proxy 2.0 and
several W2K clients. Has anyone sucessfully configured something like this
and if so, how did you do it? Equipment recommendations appreciated as
well.

You can respond to my personally so as not to clog up the list.

Thanks.

May I suggest that the words 'off topic' or OT be used somewhere in the

previous topic as 'Was: previous topic'. Makes it easier to sort.

 W3SVC2

Why are there three of these?

RE: Off Topic Kinda

2001-10-31 Thread Tim Ault

While I think the attribute is appropriate, I also think the point of the
attribute is sorely missed by a few participants of this list: Trolls are to
be ignored.

Trolls stop their inane posts when--and only when--they notice 1 of 1
responses to them in the list.

On that note, I hate the fact that I am responsible for one more increment
in this thread. C'est la vie..

You can do this pretty easily with perl. Use the Net::rexec module or the
Net::Telnet module and then compile with perl2exe.

I don't think it would be a good idea to have a unix superuser password
in a batch file (text). A program that does macros and could scramble
the info would be the way to go.
