Being below the U.S. poverty line does NOT equal poverty...it is a

There is zero poverty in the U.S.

I've travelled enough to have seen real poverty and to know that no

And it is an extreme insult to the real poor of the world to claim
that our fat, bloated poor with their TVs, MacDonald's 5,000

Let it go. The whole thing was a really dumb
analogy thought up to support why Maharishi
treats his students like children, and brow-
beats them with a dogma that says it's
dangerous for them to read books from or
see teachers from other spiritual traditions.

I *understand* that you are comfortable with
this, and *like* being treated like a child.
Your obvious problem with learning a simple
thing like driving on the other side of the
road indicates WHY you may feel this way. Being
treated like a child enables you to feel safe,
and taken care of.

Cool. May you feel as safe as you want to. Others
of us prefer being treated like adults, and being
able to read what we want and learn what we want
from whoever we want. We don't run on the F.E.A.R.
operating system the way you seem to.

So there's a place for each of us in the universe.
You can stick with the TMO, and do what you've
been told to do, and the rest of us can live like
adults and make our own decisions about things.

FWIW, my sister, who is an excellent and experienced

It's notoriously difficult for many, if not most,

Yes, I'd say that suggesting the person who has

Picture this.

Volkswagen Beetle.

Spare Egg is driving.

Barry in the back seat with one Stein sister on his left and the
other Stein sister on his right.

It's 8am Sunday morning and they're starting out in Atlantic City,
New Jersey. Destination: Seattle, Washington.

Only bathroom breaks and gas-tank fill-up stops allowed.

There is a loaded snub-nose revolver under the front seat.

How long before Barry offs himself?

Funny scenario, but illogical question at the end.

Just outside Atlantic City, the guy in the back
seat grabs the gun, points it at the driver and
tells him to stop the car. Shortly thereafter
there are three people standing on the side of
the road and one guy driving away in the car.

Assuming the VW isn't his, the guy drives it to
the nearest sleazy-looking used car lot (a cinch
to find in New Jersey) and sells it for cash.
He then takes a cab to the airport and flies
first class to somewhere far more interesting
than Seattle.

:-)

I spent 5 years i England. I drove more in England than I had in the States
prior to getting
assigned there while in the USAF 9didn't drive that much before I joined the
USAF).
Perhaps Barry doesn't remember how difficult it was for him when he first
started 40 years
ago, but there were 4000 American Airmen living on my base, plus another 5000
5 miles
away PLUS their families, and I can assure anyone that's interested that the
British
government and the USAF were very aware of the issues involved in people
adjusting to
the left-hand road driving, especially when driving left-hand-drive Yank
Tanks, which
were wy too large for the roads and highways. It wasn't a trivial matter...

Except for Barry, of course...

It is relatively simple to keep things straight as long as you NEVER EVER drive
the wrong-
drive car. You just change everything from a handed orientation to a driver's
side
orientation. Passengers go to the correct side of the road. Swerve away from
the driver's
side in a collision, etc. It takes a while to adjust but isn't that big a deal
*in the long run*.

The problem really happens when you switch driver's side vehicles while in the
UK and
have to constantly change your reflexes or don't switch your car (bring your
own car to the
UK as many airmen do) and have to relearn UK reflexes using the same car you've
been
driving Stateside.

Barry was claiming that one can bounce back and forth without any problems at
all, which
was not my experience when I came back stateside for my Father's funeral. It
takes some
time to adjust and some time to adjust back. Eventually, I'm sure that one
could get used
to changing back and forth constantly, even using a wrong-drive car, but I
wouldn't want
to go through the learning curve while driving on public roads.

The USAF wanted me to drive a military pickup (think smaller, modern version of
the
troop-carrier trucks you see in the WWII movies) while in the UIK, but I
managed to avoid
that. The damn things were so hard to drive anyway AND they were American drive
trucks.
Learning to keep my foot on both the gas and brake pedals as I put the thing in
gear AND
compensate for being in a wrong-side vehicle WAS too much for my ADHD/OCD
brain.
Worry about which foot to use for gas/brake as opposed to clutch AND worrying
which
side of the road when my visibility is poor and my reflexes say to go to the
wrong side of
the road to put the driver towards the middle? No thanks! Too many conflicting
clues as to
what is the correct thing to do.

BTW:

We say: drive on the right side.
The Brits say: drive on the correct side.

The letter says, We strongly urge you to halt the
show's broadcast...

Censorship is an enforceable order by an authority.
To call an attempt to persuade (strongly urge) by
members of the public, who have no power either to
order or to enforce, censorship or even an appeal
to censorship is a dangerous misuse of the term and
a serious misunderstanding of the nature of free
speech and the First Amendment.

There would be nothing wrong with Barry making an
argument that the broadcast should proceed as
scheduled. Barry, however, fails to make such an
argument and instead resorts, as is his unfortunate
wont, to ad hominem and an appeal to emotions rather
than facts or reason.

(Barry has acknowledged that he was mistaken
on this point.)

What happened is that some Democrats, terrified that some
misinformation in the film would lose votes for their
candidates in the next election, demanded that it be
 pulled.

Barry conveniently neglects to mention that a significant
number of conservative Republicans--including Bill Bennett
and Bill O'Reilly--have *also* urged that it be pulled.

The hilarious part about this is that many of
the same people calling for this film not to be aired
(including our own Judy Stein) are the SAME people who

Republicans tried to keep Fahrenheit 9/11 from being
aired on public TV before the 2004 election (and for the
exact same reason...they were afraid that film would
 lose votes for *their* candidates).

Actually, the Republicans tried to persuade *movie
theaters* not to show the film. It was never scheduled
for public television. At one point Moore had planned
to show it on pay-per-view the night before the
election, but decided against it, as I recall.

The Republicans had every right to urge movie theaters
not to show the film. They were exercising their right
to free speech, and the movie theaters exercised *their*
right to free speech by showing it despite the protests.

Basically, it's a pretty fascinating study in hypocrisy.

You can't get your facts straight enough to do

I'm merely pointing out that some people (Judy more

to the Republicans you hate. There seems to be *no
question* that this miniseries was an intentional
hatchet job. But Judy and others were advocating a
form of censorship (try to keep the film from being

Judy's original suggestion was that the film not

There can be NO conceivable reason for her making
that suggestion unless what she was *really* wanting

something that might make them less likely to vote

And *then* she further stipulated that when the

all day that this was to make it seem more like

person in the FFL audience knows what she really
had in mind. Fewer people watch pay TV than broadcast
TV. Duh...Judy wanted the film *seen* by fewer people.

I'm checking in on this tempest in a pisspot because
ONCE AGAIN Judy has shown her willingness to do the
*same* things herself that she decries in others.
When it's *her* political goals that she wants advanced,
she's willing to do the *same* things that she admon-
ishes the Republicans for doing.

As Shemp has pointed out often, her supposed outrage
over lying and immorality doesn't seem to apply as
strictly to Democrats as it does to Republicans. Shemp
thinks this failing is because she's a Democrat; I
think it's because she's a hypocrite, that's all.

I don't know and I don't care. Approaching the
minimum legal driving age, one would assume.

Are you still trying to claim that people are
too stupid to learn two different procedures at
the same time? If so, I will graciously end the
debate by admitting that I feel it is *completely*
possible that YOU are too stupid to learn two
different procedures at once. There. Debate over. :-)

Notice, by the way, that unlike what I have done,
Barry will not engage with my arguments in the
interests of furthering understanding of the issue.
Barry prefers the hit-and-run approach, which
relieves him of any need to do any thinking to
justify his perspective.

hatchet job. But Judy and others were advocating a
form of censorship (try to keep the film from being

 (Democratic) poliitcal goals.

However, that was not advocating censorship.
Censorship is *forcing* material to be withdrawn
or changed. I do not have that power. The only
entity that has that power is ABC itself.

Judy's original suggestion was that the film not
be shown until after the upcoming mid-term elections.
There can be NO conceivable reason for her making
that suggestion unless what she was *really* wanting
to achieve was to keep potential voters from seeing
something that might make them less likely to vote
 Democratic.

My reasons were more complex than that, of course.
It wasn't just the pre-election scheduling; it was
the scheduling on the anniversary of 9/11, when
people's emotions are likely to be raw and on the
surface, and they are therefore more suggestible.

It would have been *less* bad to show it a month
later, even though that would be closer to the
election, because its partisanship would then have
been more obvious. It would have been a lot more
difficult to pretend the film was some kind of
public service, a respectful historical reenactment
of a national tragedy based on authoritative
documents.

It was *purely* a suggestion that was
based on censoring what the public could see

No, it was not a suggestion based on censoring,
as I've already pointed out.

, with
the idea of influencing an upcoming election.

With the idea of *preventing* the *dishonest*
influencing of a coming election.

 There
is no other *conceivable* reason for suggesting that
 delay of the broadcast date.

As noted below, it's *inherently* inappropriate
for a historically inaccurate program pushing a
partisan perspective to be shown on the public
airwaves without giving equal time to the opposing
perspective, regardless of the timing.

And *then* she further stipulated that when the
miniseries *was* finally shown, it should be shown
on pay TV and not free broadcast TV. She can claim
all day that this was to make it seem more like
entertainment, but I think that every thinking

had in mind. Fewer people watch pay TV than broadcast
TV. Duh...Judy wanted the film *seen* by fewer people.

No, that isn't what I really had in mind, sorry.
My first thought was, as you say, that it would be
more obviously entertainment if it were on pay-TV.

My second thought was more on target: partisan
programs are unsuitable for the public airwaves,
*unless* they're balanced by the opposite point of
view. Hence my suggestion of showing the film as
scheduled, followed by a rebuttal of the historical
inaccuracies.

It would be fully appropriate for Republicans to
advocate that a partisan, historical inaccurate film
that reflects badly on their party not be broadcast
on national television, especially not before an
election, and *especially* not on a day of national
remembrance of a great tragedy when nobody is thinking
about politics.

So I would not admonish them for doing such a thing,
to the contrary. They'd be quite correct to do so.

Sorry, wrong again.

As Shemp has pointed out often, her supposed outrage
over lying and immorality doesn't seem to apply as
strictly to Democrats as it does to Republicans. Shemp
thinks this failing is because she's a Democrat; I
 think it's because she's a hypocrite, that's all.

In fact, it *does* apply as strictly to Democrats as
to Republicans. Sorry, wrong *again*.

If you honestly believe what you said above:

1. You obviously have a dislike for liars.
Do you believe that you are consistent in
your vehement denunciations of people who
lie, no matter who they might be? That is,
do you hold all liars to the same high
standards?

2. Do you feel that when it's obvious that
someone has lied that it's somehow your duty
or responsibility to point out their lies and
seriously chastise them for lying, no matter
who they might be? If you do believe this,
do you think you've been consistent at doing
this in real life?

3. Do you believe that someone who justifies
the lies of others, makes excuses for them,
or in some way apologizes for the lies and
explains them away is also guilty of lying?

Just curious...

It would not surprise me that it is not accurate. The Americans made

Four main factors can be attributed to the winning of WW2:
 1. Montgomery's defeat of Rommels tank divisions in northern Africa.
 2. The Battle of Britain - a long air battle - Brits agains Germans -
won by the Brits with the mass of the German Luftwafe being

 3. The invention of radar during the war - a British invention.

Once all this hard stuff had been done and the war had essentially
been won, the Americans came in with their grunts.

Finally, another illusion Americans are under is that they beat the
Brits in their War of Independence. Not true. The Brits, instead
of fighting the US, focused on a more important enemy - the French,
Spanish, and Dutch were all at full-on war against Britain in
Europe. Brtain won that war and gave the colonies to the

I'm merely pointing out that some people (Judy more

So there will be no call for self-censorship (which is what this was
a call for) when I get my film aired about the prez having sex with a
donkey (and a python), and old fuck you Cheney underground doing
illegal shenanigans with those that are not to have shenanigans
imposed upon them. You will not object??

So Turquoise, Gerbal and Shempgurk think that the prez had sex with

I think you will be called upon to explain yourself when you are

It is a strange claim you are making here. Please back up your claim

Answer: they must drive a car with L on the license plate to show there's a
learner and
must have a UK registered driver (not someone with an EU license) sitting
beside them at
all times. If your neighbor doesn't have such a car, they almost certainly are
learning from
a professional instructor on a regular british-drive car, so the issue of
keeping track of
which hand drive is which is far less difficult than it would be otherwise.

How old are your neighbor's kids, BTW?

 I don't know and I don't care. Approaching the
minimum legal driving age, one would assume.

That would be age 17 in order to sit behind the wheel unless they meet special
requirements.

Are you still trying to claim that people are
too stupid to learn two different procedures at
the same time? If so, I will graciously end the
debate by admitting that I feel it is *completely*
possible that YOU are too stupid to learn two
different procedures at once. There. Debate over. :-)

I'm starting to wonder if you have ever driven a car in England at all...

Well, if you travel abroad much you will find masses of Americans
who have moved out of this country and never want to move back to
it, and billions of people who would never want to move here. (I
came here by an accident - not intentional)

There are 6 billion people in the world. about 5 billion of them
are below the U.S. defined poverty line.

I would bet you that if given the chance virtually 90% of those 5
billion and about 50% of the other 1 billion would, indeed, come to
the U.S. if given the chance.

So I think your billions claim above is, simply, wrong.

Yeah, it's like Canadians. They express their hatred for the US but
they'll be the first ones in line for a Green Card...

All I heard about this is that it is not historically accurate,
and
historians have asked for it to be pulled, and that it was
orchestrated by some right wing shennanigans in Holywood

It would not surprise me that it is not accurate. The Americans
made
a film in the '90s about a British sub that captured the German
code
Enigma machine and the Brits kept it secret for years during the
war. Most US ships would have been sunk in the Atlantic by the U-
boats if it were not for this capture. However, in the movie it
was
portrayed as an American sub captured it. So one of the most
important parts of WW2 was made to be an American victory, and
the
whole war was portryed that way.

Four main factors can be attributed to the winning of WW2:
  1. Montgomery's defeat of Rommels tank divisions in northern
Africa.
  2. The Battle of Britain - a long air battle - Brits agains
Germans -
won by the Brits with the mass of the German Luftwafe being
  destroyed.
  3. The invention of radar during the war - a British invention.
  4. The capture of the Enigma machine - by the Brits.

Once all this hard stuff had been done and the war had
essentially
been won, the Americans came in with their grunts.

Finally, another illusion Americans are under is that they beat
the
Brits in their War of Independence. Not true. The Brits,
instead
of fighting the US, focused on a more important enemy - the
French,
Spanish, and Dutch were all at full-on war against Britain in
Europe. Brtain won that war and gave the colonies to the
landgrabbers in the US. Twelve years or so later...the Brits
thrashed the Americans when the US tried to invade Canada.

Now the right wingers are trying to re-write the 9/11 story.
What a
ridiculouos country. No wonder everyone laughs at the USA.

love it.
