So is the Jyotir Math that Guru Dev built. One large building

In the yogic tradition, there are three kinds of bondage, " trividho bandhah"--two of them are vaikrtika bandha, renunciates becoming attached to objects of comfort and dakshina bandha renunciates who become dependent on money from lay people. When we need something, we ask the community for money or we sponsor a teaching or we do fundraising. Either way it is all transparent--all members know how money is used and where.Spiritual movements should mirror the spiritual life and be free and transparent.

Could you tell us more about the Purusha center in the Himalayas. It may turn out that one of the best things M. did for humanity was his secondary things: he brought together the best Ayurvedic physicians and had them work together, he helped begin popularizing the idea of Holistic architecture from a vastu-tantra perspective, etc. He also popularized an old idea: meditating in larges groups for a postive effect. Not his version of it is necessarily the one to follow, but his marketing brought it to a wider public audience. In the example of Ayurveda, he may have helped rescue it from oblivion. More and more graduates of Ayurvedic medical schools are switching to Allopathy upon graduation: it's more money for them. Now that Ayurveda is becoming more popular, that trend may change. In regards to governments, the effect may be the opposite--it tuned governments in to what cults can be like--the sad after effect is some governments might be reluctant to interact (or at least be MORE suspicious) of spiritual methods in general.

I havent gotten to it yet, but I think theres a chapter about it in Steve Briggs book. He showed slides of it at his recent presentation. The place is like Shangri La. Gorgeous. Nice facility high above Uttar Kashi with an incredible view of the valley from every room. Solar heated hot water, nice well-built rooms, etc.

I'm not the one haranguing people about how they should give up this and that and basically do anything so they can get the $$ to start. I don't believe they should. I don't believe the benefits of TM, whatever they might be for an individual, are worth that kind of $$ or anything close to it. It just looks like a crass money-making scheme to me. So, no, I won't be contributing.

But since *you* feel that way, I assume you will be putting in all or most of the $$. Correct?

How stupid. Childish. Pathetic too. Attacking the poster because you
can't get around the argument that TM only costs $3.30 a day for 2
years, and that there is no argument they can come up with to
counter it. They are truely pissed and cannot handle the thought
that for that price, dozens, possibly hundreds of people, learn TM
in India, every time a person learns TM in the US.

What makes you think that money raised in the US is applied to helping
people in India learn TM? How do you know that it's not squirreled away in
some bank account or squandered on frivolous projects?

My political philosophy has nothing to do with it. Many people
who are down and out are so because of bad decisions and I don't want to feed
that process. So, I give them something wholesome, something they could use that
won't hurt them. Christ said " I was naked and you clothed me, I was hungry and
you fed me" I would hate to think he said " I was bored and you got me stoned".
I also knew a priest who did yagayas and part of many of the yagyas he did ended
with distributing food and clothing to the poor. M also said don't give beggers
money because it fosters their dependence on
begging.

People learn TM in India. Many people, I know some of them. I also
know people who have learned for free or virtually nothing in 3rd
world countries. Many schoolchildren too learn. 400+ Buddhist monks
just learned TM in Thailand. Do you suppose they paid for it? Many
activities are being conducted around the world with proceeds from
the West, some of them fruitful, some of them not...many of them are
paid for by proceeds from the West.

You are right. At least that's the way it was when I was involved. But
informed people still say that a large percentage is misdirected. I guess
that's the price of doing business in 3rd world countries.

2006-01-03 Thread gullible fool

No, I know enough now that I wouldn't want to give
 that. There ARE
better choices. TM would be last on my list.

Last on my list as well. Even if TM cost 25 dollars
and the TMO were as dynamic and idealistic as it was
in 1975, I would still direct interested people
elsewhere. Of all the techniques I have done, the TM
sidhis was the slowest and was the only one with an
array of side effects. TM alone would, of course, be
even slower than the TM sidhis.
