RE: Tiger - CLS
Title: Message Dear Sheila My heart goes out to you and your husband. I'm so sorry to hear the sad news of Tiger. And so soon after Tipper. You must be devastated. I wish there were words to ease your pain. I've been there, and I know how you feel. I hope that as time goes by you'll be able to draw some comfort from the knowledge that Tiger was a tremendously lucky kitty to have found a home with you and your husband, and that he made it to a ripe old 14 years in your care. Re: Tiggie has gone to the Bridge
I am very sorry. I lost my Snowball to blood clots. He got one that made him unable to move his back legs and was very very painful. At the emergency place, they gave him meds and put him on oxygen and he was able to rest comfortably. They wanted to PTS but there was a slim chance of recovery with treatment, so I insisted they treat him. They called in the middle of the night, just a few hours later (we slept at a hotel nearby the hospital) to say he had gotten another blood clot and it was to the brain and he died from it. Apparently it is very hard to recover from these. My mother's cat Arthur had it happen a number of times, with varying levels of compromising his ability to walk, and they kept recurring and the last time one killed him. So I am really sorry, and you are not alone in going through this. Michelle
Re: My newest addition "Ling"
I have not followed this thread so you may have heard this already, but Topozol, I think, it the medication. There is a also a radio-therapy or surgery procedure that can be done on the thyroid glands. There is a place out here that specializes in it (MA), called Radiocat. There may be somewhere out there too. I know nothing about the procedure other than that a lot of people must do it if there is a group here that does only that. Michelle

Tigger and Quintapus
Tamara and Holly, Again my eyes are filled with tears, yet again we have to say goodbye. So much love and so much heartache. I'm so sorry for your loss. Thank you for your courage and compassion, thank you for making their lives cherished and appreciated. Waging the daunting battle for their comfort and happiness while they're with us is what matters. Each one of our little angels touch our lives in such a profound way, despite the pain, we're so much better for having known and loved them. We all put everything we have into extending their lives and making the time we have together the best it can be. I know how it leaves a gaping hole when we are forced to let go of their sweet physical presence. It never gets easier. Your energy of strength and love has helped to make the world a better place. I know that energy is depleted right now. We're all sending you our strength and love, I pray it washes over you and helps to bring you peace. Much love, Nina
RE: My newest addition "Ling"-food suggestions
Chris, My CRF cat just passed last night but I wanted to give you a tip about the CRF foodits basically crap. Just try for the low phosphorous food, under 1%. The specially made CRF food is both low phos. & low protien and the cats loose muscle tone and weight on it...plus its very high in grains and fillers and expensive to boot. I had joined two CRF websites and everyone seems to agree that the reg.-high quality brand foods: Merrick, Solid Gold, Wysong are the best bets...human grade ingrediants, -no fillers, only essential grains -non-antibiotic -non steriod -mainly free roaming meats. Good luck with Ling! RE: My newest addition "Ling"
Hyperthyroid not too uncommon in older cats—my old vet sort of guessed it when I was complaining that my older cat had started getting up in the middle of the night howling & running around. Simple blood test confirmed it & she went on tapezole. She lived to age 23 still taking the meds & there was never any problem. By the way, the meds are the same as human take & if I knew then what I know now I* would have gotten prescription filled at pharmacy rather than getting from vet who charged a lot more! I tried vet instructions of 1 ½ hours but it worked better when he curled up and went to sleep before we went… Now this is for fairly short vet visit and he just goes home & sleeps it off. It was the one and only time he ever bit me & that was because I was stupid enough to slide my hand behind the bookcase to try & nudge him out. Now go from that to a cat who was frightened but stayed calm & the difference was the ace promazine (may not be spelling right). I’ve used it 3 times with him and while he is completely alert and awake, knows what’s going on, he is just mellow enough to let the vet do whatever is needed including drawing blood. I give him the pill and put the carrier out next to him and he just pops in & goes to sleep. He’s not thrilled when I sneak up to zipper it shut but he doesn’t thrash around either… I’m not big on giving unecessary meds but it made all the difference in the world for him… Just my experience…. She actually started to walk again, and considering that she was FELV + and that she was doing great, I thought that she was going to pull through... then things started going down hill. She was so weak, and she couldn't walk anymore. She didn't want to eat... she looked miserable. So, I made a vet appointment to see if there was anything that could be done. The vet said that she developed more blood clots and that she wouldn't be able to fight them off. So I made the decision to help her pass to the bridge. I just couldn't stand to see my little girl suffer anymore. Her quality of life would have been very poor... I couldn't do that to her. She was such a wonderful little girl. My little princess. Re: Loki Update
Steve, Your vet is wrong about the steroids. Dexamethasone is like pred but much much stronger and acts within a few hours. Not only does it shrink tumors, but it makes them feel better. Depomedrol is more like pred but in a shot and stronger. I would really try to get him these shots. They are so, so, so much more effective than prednisone. Michelle

Steve, My thoughts are with you and Loki during this very difficult and stressful time. Hugs, Del - Original Message - From: Steve Williams To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Wednesday, March 23, 2005 12:09 AM Subject: RE: Loki Update I have been away from the computer for some time, spending all my thoughtand time with Loki. Thank you Terrie, Kristi, Nina, Barb, Cherie, Jen,Tonya, Joan, Carla, Michelle, and Kerry for your warm thoughts and advice.Michelle, you suggested steroids. The only steroid the doctor mentioned wasPrednisone, which I am familiar with because of a friend with Crohn'sDisease. The Doctor indicated that this would be a longer term treatment, but while having a different effect, would be slightly less effective thanthe near term relieve of a diuretic. I believe the he was indicating thetumor was too large for the steroids to have a great effect; and that whileprolonging life, life would be less comfortable.I've been making sure Loki is having some wonderful days, although it's beendifficult at times with the rain we've been having. He doesn't normally getto go outside, except for the large deck, which he loves. In good weather, the deck has always been open to him. However, these days, I've let himoutside to explore and wander in the wild grass around the house. He lovesit and has all the energy for it. I think it is wonderfully distracting forhim. His breathing has been the same. Getting rest is a difficult for him, butthe good days, I feel, have offset the labored breathing.Evaluating every breath, every movement; every happy purr, head-but,kneading action, and roll onto the back; every nap, sleep, eating habit, toilet deposit; every behavioral change, uncomfortable sleeping or relaxingposition, has been stressful for me. When to let go is so hard, but I amtrying to be unbiased with the decision about when his quality of life is nolonger good. This early evening, I think I am noticing more labored breathing. I am alsonoticing more difficulty with finding the right position to sleep. He isfavoring harder, flatter surfaces to sleep on so as not to impede breathing.I am accommodating this with soft towels on the hard surfaces he favors, with an extra small roll for his chin to rest upon. This is desirable forhim. Of course, this is now very distressing for me, as I am feeling thetime is near to let him go. I will hope for a clear morning/day for him toexplore outside, then reevaluate. No need to respond to this. I just needed to let you know and to write itdown for myself.Steve

Terrie, I am so glad he found you, he will be so much happier, I am sorry I have no idea about "hyperthyroid" I had a cat that had claws immebed into her pads, it is so sad, it is like they need to be taught how to use a scratching post again. Good luck my thoughts are with you Cherie[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi all, Well, I'm finally going to talk about the new Siamese kitty that was willed to me. Remember this kitty is 15 yrs old. Well we found out that she isn't a girl but a very neutered boy. He had 7 front claws embeded into his pads. So a very minor procedure was performed to get his claws back to normal looking. Had severe case of ear mites in his ears then on top of that he has "Hyperthyroid". I have never dealt with a kitty with this illness, pretty much everything else as far as illnesses go. So whatever advise you give me would be appreciated. What kind of meds will he need? (I won't be picking up the meds until tomorrow. I don't know what they are) Since he is an older meezer do you think his chances of a good life are hopeful. I only listen to what the Vet partly because was kind of numb when he was telling me everything that was wrong with him. He said Ling is a fighter and a sweet kitty. As I stated I know nothing about Hyperthyroid in cats. Please advise! :( Thanks! Hi Terrie, There is a hyper-t yahoo group. I don't recall the address as I lost my hyper -t cat a couple of years ago, but I got it from someone on this list, so I'm sure they'll forward it to you. Also, hyper-t can be hard on the kidneys, so you have to keep a watch on kidney values. I would feed wet food if I were you. My hyper-t cat died of kidney problems. It might be good to feed her food for crf cats just to make it easier on her kidneys. I don't know though. I'm sure you'll get lots of info. from the yahoo group. tBONNIE J KALMBACH <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Terrie,My son's 18 year old black/brown tabby Fu is living with me and is hyperthyroid. Re: Angel's Gate- My Felix
Title: Thank you Dear Kerry, Thank you for your kind words, I really need to hear I did the right thing. In my heart, I know I did, but I just miss him so, so much. Felix certainly is "plucky", quite a character. And he's very vocal too. I miss his "old man" serenades. I was looking at my photos this afternoon, I told Victor I'd send them a pic of Felix in his youthmiddle age really. Him and his brother, Oscar were about 10 when I brought them home from the shelter. Their names fit them so perfectly too. Oscar was a grouch, and a slob! He also had IBD, but he didn't care where he went, and he had no use for a litterbox! Felix, on the other hand was always a kind and gentle soul. And very fastidious about grooming himself. And if he couldn't make it to the nearest litterbox, he always found a substitute..the dog's large water bowl, my potted fig tree, the large basket in front of the fireplace, and at times he actually went in the fireplace! Even in his declining years he always tried to get to the litterbox, by this time I had a litterbox in every room in the house. He loves people, dogs, cats whatever. Often he would cuddle up w/ Lucy my neurotic dog. Lucy LOVES cats, especially kittenss, She enjoys being a surrogate mom. She did a great job trying to groom Felix everyday. And I know she really misses him, she's been extra mopey these last few days. He's such a gentle soul, you can't help but fall in love w/ him from the moment you first meet him. We are all missing him. I pray that he still has a number of good years to go. And, some great news! I did sell my house, before it was even listed in the papers. I was going nuts w/ all these strangers in my house. Last Friday, two contracts were signed. Both couples were very nice. But couple number 1 went w/ the listed price and I do not have to pay any of the closing fees or inspection fees. And the husband said his wife loved the house so much, he was afraid of what she'd do if she didn't get it! So that is why the contract is so generous on my behalf. And they were already pre-approved for mortgage. I'm delighted the house is going to people who will love it as much as I do! And our realtor told us that there are 3 couples who want to be notified if this contract doesn't go thru. So now it's my turn to find a place for me & the furkids. I'm praying it won't be too hard since once the mortgage is paid, there is still a good sum coming my way! I'll stop my ramblimg now, but thanks again for your kind thoughts! Patti .

Hi, The medication used is in pill form, but the medication can be compounded and applied to the ear flap (Not in the Ear) Cats can live a long time using this medication
