Re: Whitey
First of all, I need to tell you that if you are going to take this cat in and care for him properly, it is going to cost a good deal of . I would go to who you think owns him, explain what all is wrong with him and what will need to be done to fix it, and that you are willing to pay for it if they are willing to surrender the cat to you - if that's the case. The heart murmur at this point is of concern to me. I have a kitty with heart disease, and she can't have vaccines nor her teeth pulled. I would have an echo done to determine the cause of the heart murmur. This will be $280+. It could be benign or it could indicate heart disease. If he has heart disease he shouldn't have vaccines or his teeth pulled due to the risks of anasthesia, however the health benefits of being neutered might outweigh the risks of being under anasthesia. If he is able to be vaccinated, I'd wait until the series was done, then mix, but that's obviously a personal decision. Outside he is at risk of being run over by a car, eaten by a wild animal, God forbid taken by an animal hater and killed, drinking antifreeze and dying, being shot, etc etc. All worse than FELV IMHO. Re: Whitey
Michael, First I have to tell you, I love the pictures! You can tell he feels safe , loved and secure...maybe, for the first time in his life? I think it is wonderful that you and Jeff are helping him...I'm sorry , but when I see any animal, obviously neglected or in a dangerous situation, I consider the animal first and never the people who OWN the animal. Remember when Caroline was going through her thing, trying to figure out how to resolve her issue about the lost cat she found with the tags...that had the collar so tight around her neck and was so skinny and ratty? Well, she was trying to find the OWNER, but scared to give the cat over...It ended up being an amazing story, with a good ending , I hope??? I was all for Caroline just keeping the cat and I guess that was the wrong answer for that case, but if you actually do feel this cat has a home and is so neglected...oh well...I am always for the welfare of the animal...You guys have to be the best thing that ever happened to this cat... Feeling as you do, if I were you, I might go meet the people and have a talk with them...You can just say the cat kind of adopted you and Jeff and this is what you have done for the cat and discoverd about their cat... Nine chances out of ten they will be happy someone is doing all this...and you will then be able to do this in the open...It is a wonder Whitey is negative for diseases...maybe he was never even vaccinated and obviously is wandering around...I think everyone that knows cats knows that cats are always looking for that better home or that extra home...My neighbor's cat likes to hang at my house and my cat Bruno is crazy about my friend Beth's down the street...He eats and naps there, in the day and gets praise when he catches moles in her yard, they let Bruno keep what he catces...I rescue the moles and release...Bruno spends his day at Beth's and is home to eat dinner and sleep in my house at night...Bruno is a survivor...came from Maui Hawaii where he used to hustle the workers, men, at a sugar factory at lunch hour for handouts...ended up at the Maui Humane Society...carefully delivered by a worker, who later called to say what a great cat he was and to please find him a good home...I'm knowing some cats are better at hustling than others. Whitey might be such a cat...My friend Beth and her family are justs crazy about Bruno, especially her elderly father...Bruno is particularly fond of men...I always figured it was because of all those lunch hours at the sugar factory...Between lunch handouts, Bruno hunted rats...The bigger the rats the better...always left rat heads everywhere...Maui has zillions of rats...Where I lived we had over fifty avocado trees, lots of rats...I just am giving you a case study of my little survivor...thinking Whitey has picked you now for his life, because you are what he needs...As far as mixing your positives with Whitey...I just do not know what to say...I know you have vaccinated him...and being older he may be pretty immune to all the diseases out there ...One reason I mentioned maybe talking to the people you believe own Whitey is to gather history on Whitey and maybe just see if they would be able to offer him a little better attention at their house while he is with them...especially, since they will be aware someone is noticing...If you had a situation where everyone was negative at your house I would not even sweat it...I'd just take Whitey in...end of story...I do see where you are a bit stuck here, thinking about mixing your guys...You are the best...You and Jeff...Others will weigh in and probably say, since Whitey is already pretty old, just let them mix and give him tons of love. From what you have done for Whitey, so far, you guys have already saved his life once...no kidding...Best wishes , Glenda and family --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: View full size ??? Re: Whitey
I urge you to never let this cat outside again (with the obvious implication that he will never go home again). His previous people are totally irresponsible or terribly misinformed about cat care. His health depends on him staying inside. Even in one room, he is better off than in the previous conditions that resulted in his current state. I have rescued strays and decided that if anyone ever approached me I could give them the vet bill and tell them they can have the cat back after they pay the vet bill. Anyone who cared this little or who knows this little about cat care is highly unlikely to want their kitty back with this condition. No one has come looking. In one case I went to the owner's home in another city (the cat had a mirco-chip and lived in a different city than where I found him in bad shape ~ dislocated jaw and broken leg) and left the cat at my home. I did not contact the man again and did not give him the cat back. I believe these cats cross our paths for a reason. I know some might not agree but this is the path I have chosen. Laurie

I just got another litter of kittens that have the big C wordYAY for me! One has already died today. I noticed it had blood in his stools and was bleeding inside. I know that smell and the color was yellow...yuck! One isn't looking so hot but drinking and eating. Others are doing well and playing. They came from a kill shelter from unknown sources. Update Re: Ember and weight loss
Thank you Jane, MC, Marylyn, Caroline, Tonya, Belinda and Wendy for your thoughts and advice. I wanted to wait for a week or so in order to report back what I hoped would be a uptick in Ember's weight. Unfortunately, she's still hanging around the general 9 1/12 pounds area. Probably optimistic of me to think that just more regular Sheba would push it up. I picked up a baby scale last week so that I can weigh her here at home. I ordered small bags of Wellness CORE, Wellness Adult Complete Health Chicken and EVO based on what y'all said. I'm going to try the EVO again in smaller portions, and since it's something of a kitten food, I'm hoping it'll help put some weight back on. If there's a problem with it, I have the Wellness options to fall back on. Marylyn, I looked at Just Born and may pick up some. I'm just unsure about mixing that and Transfer Factor, since TF has colostrum (or something colostrum-esque). Looked interesting, though, especially since they mentioned giving it to pregnant or nursing adults. Once I get the dry food (hopefully by the end of the week), I'm going to give Ember a few more weeks before I take her back in, hoping that her weight will go up. If not, I'll definitely look into the thyroid tests. My vet didn't seem to think the thyroid could be the problem, and the symptoms I've read about for kitty thyroid issues don't seem to match what's going on here, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Thank you all again for your replies. Lance

I would keep them on all wet and not switch between dry and wet until the diarrhea clears up. So a rough rule of thumb is 1 lb at 4 weeks, 2 lb at 8 weeks, 3 lb at 12 weeks. http://www.eastbayspca.org/volunteer/FelineManual.pdf In and of itself, small size is not a concern - I have fully grown female cats that weigh 5 lbs.
