?-our low cost clinic vax our rescue cat first adn then discovered cat is felv+
I work with an online rescue group--the clinic came highly recommended. we sent 10 cats to be s/n vetted. I recd phone call one cat is fiv+ and one is felv+. I said, okay-dont' pts-I'll find them refuge or something. then I got the bill emailed to me adn there's a charge for felv vax on the felv+ cat. I email back--hello--isn't this charge wrong? here's the answer I recd back-pls help or point me to research about the safety or truth to this"method"-- Because of the assembly-line methods we use, all the vaccines are drawn up and administered prior to drawing blood; therefore we don't test first then vaccinate based on the test results. The vaccine won't harm a cat who tests positive and won't affect the test results. I'm told this is how other high-volume clinics do it although I've never directly confirmed that. what's ironic is same person "saved" another felv+ that came into her clinic--and needs to find refuge for it also. she loves that cat. I would like to find research to say to the clinic, hey don'tvax first and thentest because---cornell say this or another vet univ.said this. For now I've learned to say, HEY test first then vax. it's my da*n dime paying for these rescued cats! $10 saved on a felv vax is two days of boarding fees. thanks for any help, barbara
anyone ever have a positive turn negative?
Carrie Hi, my cat Mr. Bean (foster kitten I got at 4 wks old)probably at 2-3 yrs old(dont have his vet records handy) started drooling horribly so took to vet and his cbc came back postive. the vet told me to research research research so that's how I found this group adn holisticat website. I put Bean on mega c plus, vit E 200 units daily, ad once a week, better quality canned food(too many cats to feed raw diet..), no dry food except a lttle as a treat, ambertech ambrotose on advice of my chinese medicine vet and some chinese pills he gave me(sorry long day so dont' remember squat right now)and pet tinic1xday-last year tested negative--he lost most of his teeth but his fur is beautiful and breath is good. yet the same stuff did not turn Clancy negative--but he no longer has those horrible allergies adn all his fur grew back. Now i have2 rescued cats down in Georgia who went in today for neutering at low cost clinic and one is fiv+ and one is felv+. the fiv+ i can place but the felv+ has to go back to boarding until our online rescue group can find placement for him. i dont' mind--makes up for the one cat we were going to rescue but it got adopted. yeay! but then the pound called me to say new adopters called to say cat had tested felv+ at vet and vet said to pts. the pound knows our group will look for sanctuary/homes but too late for that cat. at least it did not die in gas chamber. barbara

Sue Marino, a rescuer/vet tech from Muttshack runs her own pet hospice in NY. She has about 200 sick and dying animals and is now having problems with the town her neighbors. They are trying to get her thrown out for "running a business" when in fact it is a non-profit org trying to give these disabled pets a better life before they die. The following link goes directly to the town's reps that are ruling whether or not to throw her out of her house and off her property, along with the pets. It's Sue Marino at Angel's Gate Hospice. Please take a minute and write to show your concern. Click here: Welcome to the Town of Smithtown MORE INFO ON SUSAN HERE: Some of you know that there is a small group of neighbors surrounding Angel's Gate Animal Hospice in Fort Salonga, NY who are trying to close them down. This is not news, as there have been complaints in the past but to no avail. However, now this group is taking it to the next level by hiring an attorney and trying to pursue legal action. Angel's Gate has always maintained an open door policy and has been inspected, interviewed, observed, and/or been paid surprise visits by the Department of Health, Department of Public Safety, Buildings Department, Animal Control, The ASPCA, and the Smithtown Town Attorney and have been found in no violation of any wrong doing. In fact, founder Susan Marino won the ASPCA Founders Award in 2003 for her work with animals. Since all else has failed, this small faction of the neighborhood is now trying to claim that Angel's Gate is running as a "business" when in fact it is a nonprofit providing the only services of it's kind on Long Island. Among those supporting the hospice is the remaining majority of Angel's Gate neighbors. Now Sue, Victor and their incredible staff caring for the sick, injured, homeless, and terminally ill animals need our help. Here's how. THIS TUESDAY, April 18, at 2pm. Hi Amy, I sent you some info for hopeful placement ideas for the felv+ cats of dead owner. if you dont' receive it, let me know. or at least i hope i sent it correctly... barbara Lowe From: Amy Wilkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: 2 FeLV+ Kittens Need Home - Please Read To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 I'm writing about 2 male white kittens in Rochester, NY that desperately need a home. I just got a call from a woman about her son who died suddenly and unexpectedly. I don't know the details but I know he had 2 kittens that he loved dearly. He adopted them at 6 weeks old from our local humane society and a few weeks later they both tested positive for leukemia. He had fallen in love with them and decided to keep them, so they have been in a loving home since September. Now that the son has passed, the poor boys have no home. The family called about taking them to our humane society and they said they would euthanize them. The family is devastated and just wants to find a home for these 2 cats. I am pregnant and have lost my job because of being so sick and there is just no way I can add 2 more to my batch right now. I have been in bed sick for the past 18 weeks and can't even think about introducing 2 cats right now. I feel awful for this family and for these cats that are so sweet and full of life. I know it is a long shot but can anybody take them? I would help set up transport to get them to a new home. Amy Weygandt Woof Wagon www.woofwagon.com

Re: question bout kittens....
i blame myself for letting Jelly Roll come into contact with Lenny (who tested postive) when they were kittens(3-4 weeks old). even tho Lenny died under 1 yr old, Jelly lived two plus years but crappy virus still got the best of him. keep them separated. Re: Pls help increase awareness knowing wrong things about FIV+ cats
sounds good to me. it's been such an uphill battle just with felv+. just a nitpick. you wrote vegetarians, you do mean veterinarians, right? and if you do mean veterinarians, i would think such a paper would be very time consuming because of the research involved.(years) and take a long time to get published. I keep meaning to print up a list of websites with felv+ info to give out to my vets because I get so many phone calls from them whenever another patient's cat tests positive and they need someone to talk to. a list of fiv+ sites would be good also. again the problem is if the vets are old school or just don't want to be bothered, they might not even want to be bothered giving out this kind of info to their clients because their clients would then seek a different vet's help in taking care of their cats which translates as a loss of income to the first vet. has any magazine like Cat Fancy done any articles on fiv lately? I know Angel's Gate founder recently published a book think it's called Getting Lucky--dont' know what the contents are. She might have contacts tho or suggestions. (i forget who it is on the list recently brought a cat there). also Denise Flaim at Newsday here on Long Island also published a book last year I believe. she has a weekly pet column--maybe write her to ask to do an article on fiv. (i don't get newsday anymore--no time to read!) Or google other pet columnists for other area newspapers to hit them up. i will ask a local rescue for the info on fiv's. I know of one cat. barbara - Original Message - From: Hideyo Yamamoto To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Thursday, June 23, 2005 2:11 PM Subject: FW: Pls help increase awareness "knowing wrong things about FIV+ cats" Please let me know if you have any suggestions or thought or do you think its a damn idea? Anyway, I want to do something to protect lives of FIV+ kitties in the world if anyone (even if you have done so already) can you send me the information as to how many and how long FIV+ cats (and negatives) you have and how long they have been integrated, and whether they have been transmitted or not (and the date of the last test done of negatives) and health status of FIV cats (we believe the FIV status does not have any averse affect on their life span and I would like to advocate this fact also Please let me know what you think of the idea and any information you might be able to help. what's with this 'wet food increases tartar and placque' statement ? and where is that woman her "sanctuary" in westchester? that place sounds to me like anther angel's wings in the making situation. can we find out where that house is and ask to have it investigated? even if just by another rescue so that in case it is okay rather than reporting her first to aspca who would remove animals because she's over the legal limit. barbara - Original Message - From: Hideyo Yamamoto To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Monday, June 20, 2005 7:09 PM Subject: FW: [FivCats] I need placement help for Domino Please allow me to cross post this in case you can help- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of siberskiiSent: Sunday, June 19, 2005 6:32 PMTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: [FivCats] I need placement help for Domino Some of you may remember me from last month. I have MS and now Domino has had 2 Western blots (the 2d was just done at Cornell), both with FIV+ results. Domino has been a strictly indoor cat, has a dog companion (our Golden), my kids and us. She only eats Nutro dry food, which is probably why her teeth and gums are in such good shape. I have read with interest the various postings here re: people with Lupus, HIV+ etc., who have FIV+ cats. The bottom line is that for those of us who are immune-compromised, there are no definitive answers about our risks with FIV+ cats. Joel posted here a little while ago about the spread of bacteria between people and cats; others have written about cat scratch disease being transmitted to humans. Unless you are immune compromsed, no one really can tell the those of us who are, whether it's worth the risk to keep an FIV+ cat around or not, or whether there's a risk at all. It's a complete gamble.I previously posted that I am not willing to take the gamble, not with my health. Too many doctors have been wrong about my disease, its progression, the drugs I've taken for MS their side effects; I can't take the word of fellow kitty-lovers about FIV+ if my own human docs, the two vets I've seen the Cornell Feline Health Clinic have question marks about this. So yes, I decided that I needed to place Domino elsewhere for both our sakes.I contacted the rescue group where we got Domino. They connected me to a lady nearby, in Westchester County, NY where I live. She has 17 FIV+ cats. Eight are upstairs with a dominant female, 9 are downstairs in runs or cages because they either spray or are too timid to use their litter boxes (at least acc to the lady). She feeds them all a little wet food to keep them "hydrated" (what happened to water?), which we all know increases tarter and plaque, as well as dry food. She has told me that many of her cats have had theirteeth pulled, and that some are completely toothless. She also told me that she has litter boxes all over the house, that some cats sleep on her bed, on pillows or selsewhere, and that she keeps mountans of amoxicillin around. She also has two small gogs plus a German Shepherd. She became angry when I asked if I could inspect the premises, telling me that I was being insulting to her, and she said that the only thing I could see or do at her house (which I can't, since her house isn't accessible) would be to put Domino in what she described as a large dog-sized cage in the kitchen to say goodbye. Then Domino would remain in the cage for a full month while the other cats got used to her and vice versa. Apart from my discompfort with all the above, it seems only logical to me that with so many FIV+ cats around, the chances of spreading illness, viruses and bacteria increases exponentially, thereby increasing the rish to all the cats. Needless to say, I am not inclined to place Domino with this lady. But I need to place Domino somewhere - not in a foster home, not with a resue group or a shelter, but in a permanent home where she will be safe and happy without zillions of other cats around who might scare, intimidate or weaken her. I have reactivated my yahoo email, because I know that some of you were trying to get back to me last month but my yahoo e-mail got loused up somehow and the e-mails bounced. I would be most grateful if anyone here would be willing to take in Domino, age 1 1/2, black tuxedo cat with greenish eyes, asymptomatic now, companionable but not an "in your face" cat, loves water, especially out of people glasses with ice! and likes her ears rubbed. If anyone is relatively close to us, and would allow my daughters to call for the first few months or whatever to check on how Domino's doing, since they're heart-broken too, maybe even more than me, I'd appreciate hearing from you.Gratefuly and

It was 104.0 the night I brought her home. I don't know if you'all remember that I work at a vet so thankfully I was able to start her on SQ fluids right away, the doc told me to hold of on antibiotics because she has diarrhea. This was Tuesday night. Well by Thursday her fever had not broken and I brought her to work with me, the doc then started her on amoxicillin and meloxicam (an anti-inflammatory and fever reducer), her temp still has not broken and at 4 am (last night) she spiked to 105.8!!! I could not give her any further meds because she had them at 11pm. I put her to bed on a soft ice pack and slept with her the rest of the night. This AM she is down to 103.2, better but still too scary for me. Obviously she has something else going on besides just a fever. I have a call in to my doc (again thank god I work there because its Sunday!) In the meantime I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas...experience with this type of fever...tips...anything? Also, at what temperature does there body shut down ? I can't find any reference to when a high temp would be critical anywhere. Oh yeah she is eating and drinking on her own, and she has NO other signs of illness. Thank you so much in advance for anything anybody can offer, Kristi

if you go to the military mascots page and read the stories about some of the mascots, it's even more heartbreaking when some military brass then vetoes an animal being shipped stateside when the necessary money has been raised. it costs big bucks to bring an animal back-the vet bills, transport, etc--and remember the military is not paid big bucks. barbara - Original Message - From: Cherie A Gabbert To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Thursday, June 09, 2005 11:41 AM Subject: Re: OT: US military killing dogs in Iraq I am sick and weeping for those dogs.BONNIE J KALMBACH [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: http://usmilitarykillsdogs.allsupportgroup.info/www.elephants.com Have a purrfect day Cherie

Re: suggestion
I might also suggest -how to put this?--a warning about vets who claim to be alternative medical vets/holistic etc.there's a vet operating out of the Animal Wellness center here on Long Island who is not very good -in fact, was brought to the area by a pet store around the corner from him to administer to all the sickly puppies they sell from puppy mills. Before I realized this guy's scam, I once tried to tell a young couple inhis waiting room who had just bought a puppy that their new purchase had kennel cough and mange! the receptionist started shaking her head at me and went to talk to the vet. when it was my turn to go into waitiing room with a sick kitty, he proceeded to lecture me on how "we" are not there to lecture people on their choices of pets but to help cure them. I argued that they had just bought the darn thing and should go get another. he did proscribe all sorts of holistic meds for a felv+ kitten I had but did not explain the proper way to administer them -that I later learned from reading on holisticat site---and pushed a raw diet but not a word about proper necessarysupplements. after three different visits and witnessing many other such incidents with the puppies from the pet store, i realized this was not a good vet. sure his office bulletin board has glowing testimonials from some patients however the whole picture just did not add up. barbara - Original Message - From: Barb Moermond To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Saturday, June 04, 2005 12:10 AM Subject: Re: suggestion http://www.bemikitties.com/felv/cgi-bin/suite/classifieds/classifieds.cgi?request=display_subcategory_id=113website=defaultsession=42a1277e1ec09d81 This is a link to FELV/FIV friendly vets and you can add to it - you have to register, but it's free and it's on Belinda's site. Re: Jersey_question
try posting the question on www.petfinder.org website. they have bulletin boards where you can post about various topics and as I recall there is a health board so maybe if you put in your subject header-looking for great vet in Toledo Ohio--you might get some responses. Sometimes too it just takes a little aggressiveness on the pet owner's part to jumpstart a vet into action. call the vet's office and ask to speak to the vet you saw over the phone and state your case as Tracy suggested. (no need to make an appt to just state your determination.) If the vet says they can't help, then ask them to recommend a specialist. oh, also on petfinder site you can type in your zip code under rescue and shelter search and it'll bring up a list of rescues in your area. you could try calling any cat rescue that has special needs kitties and ask them for a vet reference. good luck. praying hard for Jersey. just a thought, i give one of my cats (who is negative for leuekmia) postassium citrate to ward off any more bouts of his oxalate crystals. the other cats get MegaC plus but that's not advised for oxalate. I buy it in capsule form and fortunately this cat, Puff, loves those Pill Pockets i get at the pet store so can just hide the pill in that. the other cats' meds I just open the capsules and mix in their wet food very very thoroughly. what are some natural sources of potassium besides bananas? and would a cat even eat a banana or is it even good for them? another thought, how long has jersey been in your care? did you tell the vet his past history-outdoor cat, possible exposure to raccoons, etc? when you got him, was he able to walk/run around? or was he already slowing down? what is that disease raccoons supposedly transmit that the vets advise getting vaccinations for? if it affects dogs, does it also pertain to cats? the coincidence today--while walking my dog around my neighborhood--another neighbor came up to warn me he recently had to take his dog to the ER for treatment for the raccoon caused disease--and the dog's symptoms sound alot like Jersey's. the disease sounds like lepto-something. also the drinking lots of water losing weight also sounds like cushing's disease that my dog from years ago had. no cure but there is treatment. I just learned him to walk outside and get home. I lived in Brooklyn for 1 and a halfyears before I moved to Ohio. Here, he was fine till late January when he started sneezing and one of his eyes got red. The temp. was high. I took him toa vet (another one) twice. He put some shots and gave him antibiotics. Jersey got better but not exactly as before. The temp. was about 102.4- 102.5 and I let him out again. He likes hiking and if I lock the cat door he is starting to meow and scratch and tear the things around him. So, that was in March. And finally in late April, early May he started going outside and stay home which is not a good indicator for him. Finally he started loosing weight and walking hard with his back legs. I will stop visiting this vet and try to feed him more but...I hardly think he will survive. His kidneys are a little bit arger than the normal and he has the symptom of the Polysyst Kidney disease- drinking lots of water and loosing weight and appetite. I am confused. Re: Jersey
sorry. I have no experience with CRF or Jersey's problem of weak back legs. what do the cat owners on the CRF say? has anyone there offered any helpful info or suggestions? Have you asked your vet for referral to a specialist(if you can afford the vet fees?)---don't be worried about hurting your vet's feelings in asking to discuss Jersey with another vet. has anyone on the CRF list recommended a vet in your area? why did the vet suggest euthanasia? It has been discussed on this list before I believe--the reasons for considering being a beloved pet to sleep. hopefully someone else can post them for you--i just got back from a platelets donation so kinda tired. also many of us have our own personal criteria for judging when an animal is no longer enjoying life. frankly if your cat is eating, I would consider that a good sign. is he getting nutrients from the food--when my dog had cancer, her bowel movements were proof her food was not being digested properly adding to her weakened condition. is Jersey able to have movements? is he able to get around on his own at all? someone on the CRF group should be able to recommend a form of phosphorus for your cat. A cat testing postive for feline leukemia is not reason enough to put to sleep an animal though sadly many vets still feel that because their training has been that the pet will die anyway sooner or later. Not knowing why you selected this particular vet I can offer no answer if the vet is qualified. was the vet recommended to you? is there perhaps a veterinary school in your state? can you ask your vet to explain better what she means by the problem is somewhere between the kidneys? perhaps there might be some info on the www.holisticat.com website. I believe the founder of the site-her cat was crf also. there is an archive you can look through--and also a mailing list to join if you so desire to ask questions and for help. good luck. remember to enjoy your time with Jersey and not worry yourself all the time so that you lose what time you have with him. Re: Jersey
usually insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions from what I remember of my research of insurance for pets. did the insurance require your cat have a full exam before approval or did the insurance co. just take your money? if you didn't know jersey had leukemia until after you purchased the insurance then it might be covered. you have to read the fine print on those insurance policies. when you say you chose the vet from the list, I'm guessing you mean the insurance co. gave you a list of vets? I'd follow Jen's very good suggestions as to how to quiz a vet on their feelings towards leukemia. good luck barbara - Original Message - From: stany petrov To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Thursday, May 26, 2005 3:11 PM Subject: Re: Jersey Thanks a lot Barbara. Re: Jersey
was just about to sign off for the night then saw your question on transfusions. i had 2 different experiences with blood transfusions. one was with a less than year old cat with leukemia and it was two days before xmas. Lenny(the cat) perhaps had a week of quality life with us before we had to let her be put to sleep. the 2nd cat Jelly Roll again perhaps a week or two before he also crashed. I would not have traded that time with them for anything. I am surprised at how cheap your vet says a transfusion is. perhaps because I am in NY where it just seems everything is just so damnexpensive. I would make sure the vet types your cat's blood. it must get a matching blood type--I forget if there's a subgroup to cat's blood--I just know my second cat had a very rare blood type. I know others on the list had also had blood transfusions for their cats and can give their opinions. I'd still go for a second opinion if you do not feel this vet is up to date on treatment of leukemia. again good luck and good night, thank you for caring for Jersey. I know how stressful it can be. barbara

Re: Jersey
Hello, I assume your vet ran a complete blood work on Jersey which discovered the virus. How long has your cat not been eating cat food? Ask your vet for the Science Diet a/d cans. Many of the science diet canned foods are too dry-I know my cats will not eat any of it. the a/d cans are very very soft food--perhaps Jersey will like that. You can try putting some on a spoon and smearing it along the side of his mouth so he will be at least taste it and perhaps be tempted. Also baby food jars-beef, chicken, lamb might tempt Jersey to eat. make sure no onions in the ingredients. I agree with Belinda's suggestion to go to the Chronic Renal Failure CRF group for advice. How experienced is your vet with leukemia treatments? Ask if there is a specialist vet in the area? May I ask, what state are you in? perhaps someone on the list can recommend a vet. Good luck taking care of Jersey. He is lucky he found you. regards Barbara - Original Message - From: stany petrov To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Tuesday, May 24, 2005 11:32 AM Subject: Re: Jersey Hi Belinda, Thanks for the information. it costs over $100 to cremate an animal here on Long Island. I don't know of any vet that will just take a dead animal for no money. I can imagine the same $ chargein NJ. I also cannot even imagine how adrift many of the kittykind volunteers and foster homes feel right now. Hopefully someone in the group is well informed/experienced enough to regroup and get the currently fostered animals permanent homes. (does it sound funny to say that while I volunteer for a rescue group I really never wanted any human contact with them because I felt many were borderline crazy--I would just go pick up the kittens/cats that needed fostering and bring them back when there was openings. Also I knew if I stuck around the shelter, I would get conned into other chores/duties). Also because my dad was in advertising, he always always warned me never ever believe everything I read in print. I did not see any televised broadcasts of the seized animals but I know how newspapers and tv news distorts information for ratings. If I were involved with kittykind I'd be calling those same tv newspeople and asking for airtime to show the healthy foster animals still needing homes. Barbara

mr. bean (my postiive who has since turned negative) started terrible drooling(and then slurping up the spittle or even more fun, shaking his head and spraying me) and could not eat even his canned food. tookhim to vet and he had terribly inflamed gums. the meds didn't help so he started pulling teeth. that's when i went online and started researching and found out about stomatitis and leukemia. told the vet test him and sure enough, he ws postiive. the teeth pulling helped along with the med antirobe aquadrops-liquid clindamycin hydrochloride. i also started him on megaC plus and vit e, a and d, my chinese alt. med vet had him on immune booster pills and oh heck i forget what the white powder stuff was called but i got it from glyconutrients co. online when discovered it much cheaper there. I am so sorry you are having so much stress now worrying about all your beloved animals. wish I was closer so could help somehow. the teeth problem could also be making her nauseous which might account for lack of appetite. did you look thru the www.holisticat.com archives for any help? regards Barbara I am hoping this all just has to do with her mouth and can be resolved, but I really am worried. **Has anyone had a cat with dental disease completely stop eating and do the lip licking thing when you try to give food???*** Thanks, Michelle
Re: Need prayers and advice for Ginger
going thru my cat care books. one mentions Biodent-a good general nutritional supplement to benefit the mouth.a human product but vet can order. contains bone meal, carrot powder, spleen and other nutrients that create a healthier chemisty in tissue of mouth. takes time to work. for inflamed gums, the topical application of an herbal combinatin called Echinacea-goldenseal supreme by gaia herbs-saurate a Q tip with the liquid and run along gum line once a day or if condition severe, twice a day. (tho as I recall, echinacea made my cats foam at mouth...the taste.) anitra frzier mentions an herbal remedy to soothe and heal sore and bleeding gums--add 1/4 teaspooon salt to 1/2 cup strong lukewarm calendula and pat on gums with a cotton ball. herbal remedies are usualy taken 3-4 times a day, one to two teaspoons of tea for a cat, 1/2 t. for a kitten. another book mentions calendula for general gum care-purchase a bottle of the mother tincture-put 6 drops in 1 oz of distilled water --if gums are infected already, use a cotton swab padded with extra cotton(from a cotton ball)so tht it soaks up the liquid. (brushing would only irritate gums more). cover both inside and outside of the gums(I guess they mean both sides of the teeth)with the calendula. hope some of this helps. calendula is usually easy to find in a good health food store. interesting footnotes that the vets seem to feel they see teeth problems more in certain breeds and colors. redheaded cats have more gingivitis than other cats. purebreds more at risk-tho maine coons have less problems than abyssinians and persians. My Mr. Bean is red and he ws the first one to exhibit the gum and tooth problems. barbara - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Saturday, May 07, 2005 12:19 PM Subject: Re: Need prayers and advice for Ginger I am taking her to an internist on Monday, and also plan to call Monday morning to the veterinary dentist office near here to get her an emergency appointment if necessary. She also tries to eat a little piece or lick and then just licks her mouth and lips. When she plays and bites on whatever she is playing with, she does the same thing with her mouth. So I am starting to think her gums just hurt a lot. I also read that protein in the urine can come from bad gum infections. When bailey's stomastisis was at it's worse he was losing weight, he didn't stop eating completely but he was eating much less that was OK, and after he had lost about a pound over a month or so is when I decided none of the other things we were trying were working and we pulled his teeth. Bad teeth can cause serious infections, and if it is bad enough probably hurts enough to make eating painful. I know a tooth ache is one of the few things I can't tolerate well and I have a very high pain tolerence. Are you planning on getting her teeth cleaned soon?

I am so sorry your Akira is not doing well. My cats never let the vet techs feed them if they feeling even a little bit poorly. are you allowed to go in and visit? Just remember to breathe. I know -we all know--how cruel and unfair this virus can be---our furfriends can be doing fine and then we blink and they are sick. pulling for Akira to perk up. Remember she loves you. Barbara
Re: False Positive
She might have tested postive because she had been exposed to Smeagol(sharing litter boxes, mutual cleaning) but now has shed the virus. be sure to read all the info and links on the leukemia website. It can be very scary to face but with information you will feel more confident. I would think the vet would wait 3 months before retesting. Which test did the vet give her? Was Moxie a litter mate to Smeagol? I am so sorry you lost him. We all here on this list know how crappy this virus is and have faced losses of our furkids also. Try to take some comfort that Smeagol is now pain free and now running and playing beyond the Rainbow bridge. I would suggest you go thru the archives for info on supplements and vitamins for Moxie--I have a mixed household-only one postive now and 6 negatives. One of my other cats was a positive but after several years of MegaPlus vitamin C, vit E and feeding him a better quality diet of canned food like Wellness, Eagle brand holistic, Petguard NOT grocery store stuff, he tested negative. surprised the heck out of my vet. I would also suggest you go to the www.holisticat.com website and scroll thru their archives for info. Welcome to the group--you will find very supportive people. it might just be quiet during this mother's day weekend but I am sure others will email you. Three weeks ago she came back positive. I recently had her retested again and this time she came back negative. I am going to have her tested again in one month. She is very healthy. Re: Need prayers and advice for Ginger
i had sent my well wishes before you posted the complete story. it does sound like her teeth and gums are the problem and the gingivitis could also be causing stomatitis. is she drooling? did you try yogurt? and I agree with Barb--my cats will jump on whoever has just returned from the vet or clinic because of the strange smells. sending more healing thoughts for Ginger. barbara - Original Message - From: Barb Moermond To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Friday, May 06, 2005 4:47 PM Subject: Re: Need prayers and advice for Ginger It sounds like her teeth and gums are the things that need fixing, at least short-term. Her mouth might just be too painful for her to deal with it. Lucy probably attacked her because she smelled like the emergency clinic- my boys have done that to each other on the few occasions they've gone separately. I would definitely keep an eye on the lump, but I think her mouth is the problem at the moment. Keeping your family in our thoughts.[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Ginger, my 6 year old positive, did not seem to want to eat last night and this morning at 6 am licked her lips when I gave her baby food and only ate a few licks-- she would normally go crazy for it. I took her in to the emergency room. Her blood work was all normal except her protein was a little high. Her xrays were normal except there was a little something showing where the lymph node in the chest is. The radiologist said it is either fat, which frequently collects there and Ginger is fat, or the beginnings of an enlarged lymph node there which could indicate lymphoma. Her gums are super-inflamed and her teeth in terrible shape. They gave me antibiotics for her mouth, gave her Pepcid before we left, and said to give her fluids. They chipped some of the stuff off her teeth. She was very stressed while there.Upon coming home she ate a jar of baby food. My cat Lucy then started viciously attacking her-- which she has never done, and Ginger has been hiding from her. I gave her a vial of feline interferon for the first time, have an ultrasound scheduled for Monday if she does not get better, and am praying. I tried to give her fluids and she turned into a wildebeast-- I have given many cats fluids in my life, and Gray was helping, and we could not get more than 10 ml or so into her. I tried giving her more food, including more baby food, and she would not eat it. Actually, she tried a few licks of baby food and then started moving her mouth and throat funny like it was stuck in her mouth or throat, which of course is impossible with baby food, and then she walked away. She played with me a little, but is not herself at all. She does not have diarrhea. She is a little dehydrated, which I guess I will try to fix by getting more baby food in her since I can not get fluids into her.If anyone thinks this sounds familiar and has any idea what is going on, please tell me. I hope it is not lymphoma, and to tell the truth it seems odd to me that beginning stages of lymphoma in the chest would make her not want to eat. The Debbie mentioned in this essay is Debbie Dawn Sage, of FRIENDS of the ANIMALS, of Raytown, MO/Topeka, KS.And yes, I wrote it.- Saigh It was a sunny Saturday morning, bright but not hot, breezy but neither cold nor harsh. Even if the three of us were in varying states of displeasure about being awake and moving at this hour on a weekend, it was a perfect day for transporting animals. Blaidd was a smoldering presence in the seat next to me, still understandably upset that we'd had to leave Piper at home and likely to be for the rest of the day, as well as still in the dangerous condition of not having had any Coke since waking; Caer was still giggly and tired in the back seat from lack of sleep, though trying not to let it show by making harmless, random comments to which neither person in the front seat was really responding. And me? I wasn't really caring either way at that point - all I was concentrating on was getting to the meeting point on time, which doesn't sound like such a difficult task unless you know me and the way that for some reason logic warps around me. I can start out thirty minutesearly and still be ten minutes late. A unique talent, I guess. Approximately an hour later, we had met our charges for the day, exchanged quite a bit of interaction with the handing off driver who also happened to be the coordinator of this run, gassed up Spud (the rescue mobile - a '93 Oldsmobile; anyone see the difficulty yet?), gotten Blaidd some Coke, watered all three dogs, exchanged parting hugs and wishes with our contact, and settled everyone in the car. The Golden brothers quickly appropriated the back seat, one stretching across the entirety of it with his head in Caer's lap, the other still too excited about new surroundings and new people to even care or really notice that he was thereby forced to stand up; the Pointer occupied the space Piper normally would, first standing then sitting and eventually laying on the bench seat between myself and Blaidd in the front. We rolled down the windows, cranked the AC, and departed the service station for the three hour drive ahead of us in much better spirits. After all - everyonefit, and that's all we could really ask or hope for. I merged onto the highway, and settled into a good driving speed. The mood in the car was high - we'd just witnessed a three-legged, skin and bones beagle being delivered into the hands of his new foster or adoptive home (I think adoptive, though that wasn't made abundantly clear), and the skeleton of a pointer next to us was going to have a chance at life outside the Animal Control shelter where none of the animals were fed and barely watered as they simply waited for their turn to die. I knew we were behind, but it was well worth it; I was calculating how late we would be by the time we got to our own drop off point, and how many miles we would have on the tank before needing to fill up again, when I glanced up to the road and felt my heart sink. I'd seen the body lying on the side of the road... the dog lover in me immediately whispered beagle... just as the logic told me dead... I felt the familiar numbness lock up my chest as happens every time I see an animal on theside of the road, but magnified as the question was begged What were you doing out here? of an obvious pet lying by a busy four lane highway, 20 minutes by car from any of the nearest cities or houses that could be seen... Before I could notice the other critical detail I heard Blaidd beside me, voice tense: "That was Debbie... Stop. Stop... it's Debbie." My numb heart sank lower, and I hit the brakes. We backed down the shoulder of the highway, I surprisingly not even flinching at how close and how fast the cars that didn't move over for us shuddered past; all that mattered was getting closer to that red Chevy pulled over off the highway, its back door open and its driver

Re: Please Help! Anakin is very sick
are you saying the cat was eating his normal amount yesterday and today he's the opposite? he might just be run of the mill sick not necessarily the virus rearing its ugly head and attacking his bone marrow. i know you love him and want to do all that's possible. for his sake and yours, relax and try to just love him right now and not stress each other. if he doesn't want to be held or petted, you can just stay near him. i read your other post about giving him kmr--that's good so he wont' get dehydrated. you could also try what is it? nutracal--it's sold in pet stores--sort of a gel/paste in a tube that will give him some nutrients. please dont' beat yourself up about this--you were wonderful to take him and his sibling in and give him love and a family. have you discussed interferon with your vet? i don't know how much your vet charges but bloodwork out here can run anywhere from 100-200$ depending on the vet. let your vet know how much kmr he's taken in--and if he is still hungry for it tomorrow. an appetite should be a positive sign. I dont' want to give you any false hopes. i had one cat who subsisted on cantalope for a few weeks-she was stillplayful but was wasting away in front of me. let us know what happens tomorrow at the vet. regards, barbara - Original Message - From: catstevens To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Monday, March 07, 2005 6:43 PM Subject: Re: Please Help! Re: New To This
Hi, I'm guessing your other cats were not vaccinated for feline leukemia. are they now? I have lost 3 cats to leukemia. I am down to 7. however they have all lived together as the stress of keeping them apart would have added to their problems. I had two cats with leukemia however one recently tested negative after 3-4 years of supplements and vitamins. all my cats get MegaC+, vit e 200 units, A D once a week and pet tinic. the two +'sare also on ambrotose. I only tried interferon when the last one got sick--one day a fat healthy 2 year old and then "crashed" in a sense. the last one- a male-who died from leukemia I rescued from a kill pound along with his two siblings. one sibling died within a couple of weeks from something unrelated. the other kitten is sitting here on my lap and except for her runny eyes which one vet said was feline herpes, she is fine and still tests negative. She and her brother were inseparable adn always cleaning each other and biting while playing. no idea what retrovir is--hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me will come along to help. the info on the net is tremendous and overwhelming. just remember to enjoy the time you have with your cats. sorry you had this virus hit your family. what did the other kittens you mentioned die from? i would recommend you get your cats on supplements to boost their immune system. filtered water is also good. try to stay away from grocery store cat food and feed your cats a better diet-wellness, Petguard, Merrick's, Eagle brand are good names. as for the animal shelter, i'd say, channel your energy into postive and focus on your cats. many rescue shelters are understaffed and overworked and trying to deal with public that refuses to neuter/spay their animals and the sad eyes of the animals the rescue staff must walk past as they make life and death decisions about which animals to rescue from the kill pounds. also have you gone to the www.holisticat.com site and searched thru their archives for info. take care barbara - Original Message - From: Mrs. Kulak To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Sunday, March 06, 2005 12:55 PM Subject: New To This I have just found out that my two kittens are positive for feline leukemia. I adopted a kitten from an animal shelter in Wisconsin that originally tested negative. But since then he has become positive and has infected one of my older cats, who in the meantime has become quite sick. It is devastating to me. BUT, I am trying to remain optimistic. Therefore, I am trying to find out all I can. First of all, I have three other cats, all of which tested negative. I have to keep them separated now from my two "sick" ones. Even though the little kitten I adopted in November has the virus, he acts totally normal. The older kitten which is actually a year old now, is sick. I've been giving the older one 3cc of Retrovir in the morning and in the evening. I don't know what the side effects are to cats. I only received the side effects for humans when I picked up the medicine at the pharmacy. Is there any place you can recommend to me to find out more about the side effects to cats? The side effects to humans don't look so good, so I'm a bit worried about this medicine. Second, as I have stated, I have to keep my cats all separated. This is EXTREMELY hard. We were one big happy family. All of my cats got along, cuddled, took care of the little ones, played together, cleaned each other, and now I've had to tear up the family. The older ones in the basement are wondering what's going on. I go down there to sit with them and they just stare at me. It's kind of creepy. But they do thrive on the attention oncewe get past the awkward moment. The kittens I keep upstairs so that I can monitor them. The littlest one is constantly crying at the door that separates them all. I've even caught the older one clawing at the door today. It's really hard. Therefore, I was wondering, if after the incubation period is over and the other older cats get retested and if they still prove to be negative, then get their shots, could I put the family back together again? Or is it better for me to find a new home for the ill cats? I will die if I have to lose them. They are my babies. This will be the third and fourth kittens I have lost in three years. But I need to do what's best. I'd rather take care of the ill kittens myself than have the cost burden and the stress go to someone else. Re: New To This
i just did a google on retrovir and found some info. rather than rephrase it, i suggest you do that also. just go to www.google.com and as I did, type in retrovir side effects cats. most of the info deals with treating fiv cats however the side effects would be the same(liver problems). sorry, i've had a really really long day of driving so can't even see straight to stay online tonight. barbara - Original Message - From: catatonya To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Sunday, March 06, 2005 7:45 PM Subject: Re: New To This Hi Kristina, I'm sorry you had to find us. The list is slow on weekends, but you'll get lots of good info. As per your questions, I've never heard of retrovir, so I'm no help there. It sounds like your cat that tested negative and then positive had just not had time to test positive yet after exposure. You are right, that the shelter should be more responsible, but I doubt they could even go back and trace the cats/kittens that were together for that period of time. Typically if anyone in a group held together tests positive they euthanize everyone who had contact with the positive, so in my opinion, I would let it go. Hopefully any other cats that turn up positive will go to good homes such as yours. Others on the list know more about the time involved from exposure until a test result will show positive. Also, though, your cats testing positive could just be positive because they've been exposed and still 'throw off' the virus and end up negative. Many people on the list mix cats following the vaccination protocol someone (I think Chere) discussed. I've had 2 positives mixed with my negatives for around 7 years. I lost one of my positives, but none of my negatives have caught the virus. The positives were positive when I brought them in. In general, people on the list have found the shots to be effective. If all of these cats have already been mixed, then my opinion is that whatever damage there might be is already done. I would still booster my negatives though before mixing. I hope this helps some. Re: Feral cat book...to the Lottery/freecycle
just a thought. is there a www.freecycle.org listed for your local area? in case you don't know how it works, you have to register and then (at least in our area) the first post must be an Offer of something. everything has to be free. people offer things from packing materials to boats to food etc. you could post as a cat rescue looking for food--that would smoke out any cat lovers and perhaps you could network with them. also i googled for new mexico(that is where you are, right? or did I hallucinate again?)and found this group. perhaps they could help or know others. http://www.albcat.com/ but if you're not in new mexico then no help. where are you? regards Barbara what's ironic is that anytime i try to help a feral group locally, they are very closed mouth for fear of people dropping off more cats.

Re: New FeLV+ Cat, transfusion yesterday. Please see blood results.
Good morning, I am very sorry to hear about your Brissle's condition. How is she doing? (and what an unusual name!) I'm no expert on the blood results. hopefully someone w/ more knowledge will respond soon. there's lot of info about anemia in the archives. Pet tinic is usually available only at the vet's-tho I believe i've seen it sold in kv vet supply online. don't have their link but you can probably find it if you google. i recall reading others' posts about their cats getting B12 shots. I've gone thru the transfusion route with two of my +'s--both of whom sadly passed away from leukemia. I hope you are able to enjoy some quality time with your pet. thymus, echinecea are available at health food stores but call around first. also with the ech. you can't give continuously and it does have a nasty taste and always made my cats foam at mouth. if you haven't yet, you might also go thru the topical archives over at www.holisticat.com site. the liver shake receipe is in the archives on both sites, I believe. I know it's overwhelming and stressful to try to go thru all the information to try to find some way to help your beloved animal. just remember to love her now. remember to enjoy her now. I've lost 3 to leukemia however one of mine also tested negative after four years of supplements and vitamins. regards Barbara - Original Message - From: Melbeach [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Sunday, February 27, 2005 2:40 PM Subject: New FeLV+ Cat, transfusion yesterday. Please see blood results. Hi everyone. First post here. My 8-year old female Brissle was diagnosed two days ago with severe anemia and FeLV. The vet was not optimistic about her chances. She had a blood transfusion yesterday. She's doing much better now, eating really well, color is returning. But I know this is probably only temporary. She's still licking wood, which I know is a sign of anemia. I wanted to post Brissle's blood results (before transfusion) and see if anything stands out. If it's bad, don't be afraid to tell me! For one, my vet was concerned about lymph-related issues. Well here are her results from Friday, before the transfusion. (In parenthesis, I included where the number falls in the report's Reference Range): HCT = 9.7% (extremely low) HGB = 3.1 g/dl (extremely low) MCHC = 32.0 g/dl (normal) WBC = 17.3 x 10^9/L (normal) GRANS = 8.3 x 10^9/L (normal) %GRANS = 48% L/M = 9.0 x 10^9/L (high) L/M% = 52% PLT = 175 x 10^9/L (low to normal) Retics 4.0% ALB = 2.79 g/dl (normal) ALKP = 31 U/L (normal) ALT = 87 U/L (normal) AMYL = 1667 U/L (high) BUN = 30.0 mg/dl (normal) Ca = 9.43 mg/dl (normal) CREA = 1.46 mg/dl (normal) GLU = 151.3 mg/dl (high) PHOS = 5.46 mg/dl (normal) TBIL = 0.75 mg/dl (normal) TP = 8.48 g/dl (normal) GLOB = 5.70 g/dl (very high) I'm debating between Interferon and Immunoregulin for the FeLV. I'll be going back to my vet tomorrow and want to be decided by then. My vet doesn't seem very up to date on these treatments. But at the same time, he's receptive about ordering the Interferon from Island Pharmacy and there are other things I like about their office. So I'm not kind of in the middle about switching vets. But I think I can work with this guy as long as I'm prepared. I'm also really worried about the anemia. Something tells me this could be the bigger issue. I'll be going shopping in a couple hours before PetSmart closes. Anything good that PetSmart might carry? I'm not too worried about price at this point. I'm just at the beginning of researching the diet issue now. So far, I've read about: Pet Tinnic, thymus, echinacea, Periactin, liver shakes. Does PetSmart carry any of this stuff? I'll keep reading Thanks! Any help would be greatly appreciated. -Melbeach

I am still looking for an adoptive home for Chili and Salsa. Here is the deal guys: They are beautiful. They are soft. They are sweet and funny and playful. But they can't stay here forever. I live in a two bedroom apartment that is carpeted. My dog was just diagnosed with the first stages of renal insufficiency. I have a 17 month old toddler. Seven animals, carpet, and toddler aren't a good mix. I have worn out the good will of my partner. I have to get these numbers down and get our household back to some semblance of normal. I have two sections of isolation now because the new FeLV positives cannot mingle with the original ones because they are not altered and either not vaccinated or incompletely vaccinated. The new cats aren't completely vetted yet. Chili and Salsa are in adoptable condition--they are FeLV positive but otherwise healthy, vaccinated, and altered. They are dog-friendly. Adopting them out frees up room in my home for the remaining cats, two of which are also FeLV positive but not in adoptable condition. It will help me devote the same time and effort i put in to the original litter to these new cats. These new cats need more TLC because they came in sick, malnourished, and older and therefore far less tame and willing to trust. The Marley Fund house is currently way overburdened due to a cruelty case they had come through. Originally they were supposed to go there, but a real HOME would be so much better. if anyone is looking to adopt, please please please let me know. It would be best if they were adopted together as they are a bonded pair. I know how near to impossible that is. Melissa in NJ (Bergen County)

you can also smear some food on her paws so she'll at least taste the foodstuff you're trying to get her interested in. sometimes a cat gets nauseous and won't eat after that. use a wooden tongue depressor and try to smear a little food inside the side of one of her cheeks also. deli meats always seem to interest my gang. also those cooked chickens from the grocery store. and heck, i'm here on Long Island NYand it's still a battle to educate my vets about leukemia and what's new in the field. and remember to just love Miatia. try to stay calm around her and stroke her gently. and please when you find time, alert someone to the situation at that farm. there might be several leukemia postive cats there -all with no proper attention. take care, barbara - Original Message - From: Chris To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Sunday, February 20, 2005 1:05 AM Subject: RE: miatia Just keep in mind that almost any food is better than no food.
