[Felvtalk] RIP Mary Christine/MC/Tenhousecats

2021-04-22 Thread Kelley S
I just learned of the sad passing of MaryChristine. She was one of the
first and best friends I made on this list. She was a fierce advocate for
FELV cats as well as other special needs cats such as CH kitties. She
loved Calicos and Persians. She also loved dragons and photography.
During her later years she suffered from poor health and was not around
very much. She died of Covid in late January.

I’m sure there were many happy reunions when she crossed the Bridge.

Lost my little Coco last night. It was sudden - she was playing and

We also have catio plans, if anyone is interested. The plans are 100%

To make this on-topic - little Coco was retested and is still pos, but
she's doing very well other than the occasional URI and diarrhea. The vet
is amazed and says she has outlived her life expectancy. I hope to keep

[Felvtalk] Request for help

2016-09-05 Thread Kelley S
Hi Guys,

First, please forgive the blank email I sent. I would like to request to
post a fundraiser here. I know none of us have money, but I'm hoping if
this fundraiser gets shared it will get to some folks with money. My
Toodles is in the hospital and has been since Thurday. I'm anticipating
the bill will be $750 if not more, and that is more than half my SSDI
check. When I was able to work this was not as much of a problem, but now
it is.

I won't post it if yall say not to! So just let me know.

Thanks,

Would anyone mind if I posted a fundraiser here? Yall have been so good in

and one of my babies has been in the hospital since Thursday, and the bill
is already half my check for next month. I try not to ask too often and
make it work, but this is not workable.

I personally do not do lysine AT ALL. It was only ever really recommended
for herpes, there's recent evidence it doesn't even work for that, and it
reduces something else they need (can't remember right now).
http://www.petmd.com/blogs/thedailyvet/ken-tudor/2014/august/feline-herpes-virus-bad-news-popular-treatment-31971

What I totally recommend, and so does my holistic vet: Raw or partially
cooked diet. Standard Process Immune System Support. I've seen standard
process clear up some nasty stuff.

Many times a "slight positive" is a test that isn't correctly read. I
can't say it is all the time. I had a kitty who tested "slight positive"
who came up negative on retest. No way would I separate the babies, if she
is positive and they are going to be infected they're likely already
infected. Just my opinion.

Re: [Felvtalk] (no subject)

2016-06-09 Thread Kelley S
Yes, but anemia is a condition It isn't necessarily caused by FELV. I've
had cats with anemia who didn't have FELV, and if her kitty had FELV the
bloodwork would not have come back right, unless her kitty wasn't tested
for anemia, but anemia is one of the things all my vets have always checked
on with bloodwork. I guess anemia isn't an infection, and neither is
cancer, so I completely misstated that, but I still believe cats don't die
OF FELV, they die of something else. As for the other kitty being pos, I
just remembered that even cats who have tested pos and been housed with
other pos cats can turn neg, it happens every once in a while. So
definitely not good to assume the other kitty is pos.

Re: [Felvtalk] (no subject)

2016-06-09 Thread Kelley S
I think it is pretty odd to have good bloodwork if they have lymphoma. I
had a kitty with lymphoma and he had non regenerative anemia and some other
abnormalities but you are right, it isn't necessarily something that would
show up on bloodwork. The statement that she is 99% sure the other kitty
has it and not to even test is still way out of whack in my opinion.

I'd look into a different vet, for starters. Cats don't die of FELV, they
die of opportunistic infections due to compromised immune systems. If the
blood tests were good, what specifically was being treated? Chances are
very good Dolce does NOT have FELV. Many people here mix positive and
negative, as do I with my vet's approval, although my negative cats are
vaccinated against FELV. I think it is just nutty to say not to even test

The south is MUCH different from New York State. It is much cheaper to

[Felvtalk] Coco sneezing blood

2016-01-21 Thread Kelley S
Hey folks

Coco went through a bad time last year where she would not eat, dropped a
lot of weight. We got her started eating again and she has gained 1/2
pound - from 6.0 to 6.5 (she is a small cat, but I'd rather see her at 7).

Anyway, she is now sneezing blood. I took her in to the vet Saturday and
he tried one antibiotic, took her back on Wed and he gave her another
antibiotic, which I am probably going to have to go rebuy tomorrow as I've
managed to lose the bottle.

Anyway - she is now sneezing blood and has a very little bit of dried
matter in the corners of her eyes. She is eating, drinking, pottying,
playing fine. But she is still sneezing blood - sometimes a fine spray and
sometimes hunks of bloody mucus which is very unnerving.

Has anyone had to deal with this?

Re: [Felvtalk] cat fountains

My friend does something similar but she feeds them all in separate
crates. They know their crates and will jump in at meal time. I could
never give my cats canned food in separate bowls like that - they love
canned food so much they just go crazy and some would definitely be left
out. I also have one who does not like canned food - she does like plain
human canned chicken but I can't give her that as a main diet.

Hi Lance,

Thanks for reminding me about Yahoo groups. Most of the ones I was on are
defunct since the advent of Facebook but it looks like this one is still
busy. I have joined it and am seeing what I can find out.

Thanks!

[Felvtalk] Lymphoma

2015-12-20 Thread Kelley S
Hi folks,

Hope you will not mind me asking about a negative kitty, since yall know a
ton about lymphoma and I don't.

Simon is sick. He had his senior bloodwork and it came back with elevated
white blood cell counts and non regenerative anemia, so my vet did
additional tests PCR for hemobart and combo test, both came back
negative He's also lost a lot of weight. I'm trying to feed him A/D to
see if I can get a little weight back on him.

So the next step apparently is a sonogram to look for cancer. Vet suspects
due to his age (10) and the blood profile lymphoma or mylenoma.. Regular
DVM doesn't know anything else to do at this point.

What can yall tell me about your experiences with cats and cancer? I've
only had one with cancer and I had her euthanized due to the vet's advice -
it was cancer of the mouth and he said the tumor was in a bad place and
there was no treatment.

Also, I hope yall don't mind me sharing a fundraiser when I get one made.
I don't have enough money to cover specialists. He's a sweet boy, I call
him my shadow. He's lying beside me now..

I had a senior cat come into rescue and I gave him a rabies shot as
required by law. He developed AIHA (Automated Immune Hemolytic Anemia) and
after giving it a good fight passed away. I had a fundraiser for him and
some of yall were nice enough to donate He had DAILY CBC blood counts as
well as extremely strong meds (Leukeran, an anti cancer drug, was one.) I
will never ever be cavalier about vaccinations again - unfortunately Texas
does not accept titer tests for rabies but if your state does I would
HIGHLY encourage it. Of course kittens do need an initial series...but
after that, especially for the seniors, vaccines can be terribly dangerous.

Well, I am happy to say she is eating like a champ. She ate one serviing
of Prowl today, plus a can of food, plus some dry food - I don't really
like her eating dry but it will put weight on her.

Best of all, my vet say he has no problems letting her in with the rest of
my vaccinated cats. I have 2 more vaccinations to go, one is tomorrow and
the other one is next Friday. He even said when he brought the FELV+
kittens to his house, he made sure his other cats were vaccinated first and
then let them in with the others.

I'm going to try my best to ask again about Winstrol tomorrow.

I hope no one in still giving combo vaccinations for FIV. My understanding
is that the FIV vaccine (but not the FELV vaccine) will cause a cat to test
FIV+ for lifetime. In the sad occasion kitty should get out and taken to a
shelter, he will test FIV+ and that is not a good thing for a cat in a
shelter.

2015-10-02 Thread Kelley S
I don't think he has a problem providing the Winstrol. He's pretty
agreeable. He's one of my favorite vets ever. After Merlin died he told me
he once took home 2 FELV+ kittens from the clinic and they died before 10
months. I read between the lines - someone asked him to PTS those kittens
after they tested pos. This in contrast to one of my old vets who had a
sign on his door any cats or kittens left at the door would be humanely
euthanized. He does not see much FELV+ in his practice so he does not
know, but he is generally willing to get me whatever i ask for. Michelle is
asleep right now so I can't do anything. No car.

[Felvtalk] Coco update

2015-10-01 Thread Kelley S
We got Coco bathed with Dawn water and all the nasty flea dirt off of her.
She still has a few live fleas crawling on her even with the Seresto collar
but nothing like they were before. We have her in an upstairs bathroom
with A/D. Last night she ate half a can of Friskees on her own. I am
going to clean up her room while she is in the other room and put her
clean bedding back in - I washed it in hot water to kill flea eggs.

Her ears are dirty, need to see if it is infection or mites. It isn't
crunchy like mites tend to be so maybe infection. Lots of waxy residue.
Looks like what my heart kitty Missy used to get near the end of her life.

Thanks to whoever recommended Little City Dogs, I ordered 2 packages of
Lufenuron and one of Nitenpyram. I am declaring WAR on these fleas..

I continue to be really worried. She is so very thin and eats almost
nothing. She IS eating, just not much at all. I have gotten some AD and
am going to try to syringe it to her.

Lorrie,

Yes, I would agree it is very difficult. Unfortunately very difficult does
not mean impossible. That's my problem. I have no more kittens. I have a
young adult cat who was born 1/7/13 who has been combo tested negative and
vaccinated along with all the other cats.

I spoke to him about the Winstrol and he agreed it would be a good idea.
We did not go further than that. I have a diarrhea problem we are trying
to deal with and I think a specialist may end up getting involved. It is
nothing that shows up in a regular vet office type fecal and antibiotics
and steroids have not helped it. Neither have fortiflora, yogurt, pumpkin,
some volcanic ash stuff recommended by my old vet, crying, or praying.
Not all the cats have it but those that do it is intractable. Their senior
bloodwork shows mostly the same thing, all the major stuff normal, mildly
elevated white blood cells.

I talked to the vet today and he looked at her. She is a little underweight
and mildly anemic. He said he would not even consider it unless/until those
two things are corrected. She does eat on her own but not much. I'm going to
try her on some prepared raw and see if that helps. He retested her and she is
persistently infected. She did not come from a shelter. One of many kittens

Re: [Felvtalk] Capstar/Nytenpyram

2015-09-28 Thread Kelley S
We have been using Advantage monthly (big dog tube, divided up) and not
much success. Every time I take a cat in the vet will say "too many fleas"
and apply Revolution. That seems to work better but at $18 a pop I cannot
afford it. So I actually am going to Seresto collars. I have read of some
side effects, so I am going slow and putting one on per few days and
observing. Some people would yell at me for that, but the natural products
are not working and some of the chemicals are not working either, and I
can't have severe flea infestations. The collars are expensive, but less
expensive than monthly Revolution and steroid shots for flea allergy. I
have never ever seen fleas like this in my life and I've lived all over the
south. The cats do not go outside. These fleas were here when we moved
in.

[Felvtalk] Little Girl Coco

2015-09-28 Thread Kelley S
I took her to the vet today. Very friendly, mostly healthy. She is a bit
thin. I am going to try to put her on some dehydrated or frozen raw. She
does not eat a lot, but she does eat. A little anemic. She has diarrhea,
fecal is not turning up anything. Very very friendly and loves people.
Unfortunately continues to test positive and we are deciding she is
persistently infected at this point.

She HATES being separated from us and will hate it more now that Merls is
gone and she has no one to play with. I have ordered one of the big cat
condos and am going to put it in front of the sliding glass door and put
her in there for a couple of hours a day so she can have some time out of
her room (large bedroom) and see outside.

But, I would adopt her out if anyone were looking for another kitty to add
to their FELV crew. I can't get another one for a companion for her, I
just cannot do this. She is safe here and has a home for however long her
life may last. But if you know anyone who is looking for an FELV kitty
please let me know. She is a long haired orange kitty and absolutely
gorgeous.

I know many of you mix and I thought I could and I know all the medical
reasons it is ok. But I just can't do it.

I feel really bad, because I have a healthy cat population room that I live
in with the healthy population cats, and a felv+ room, and no matter how
much time I spend in the felv+ room, it is never enough, and obviously not
as much time as I spend in the healthy population room. I was just about
to mix them, because I had a kitten who is now over a year and has had both
felv shots, but I hadn't yet. I think what I will do is order a condo, and
put her in it for at least a couple of hours a day out front for
observation purposes.

I failed him. I did not notice his symptoms in time. Now I have his
"sister" (not blood related" by herself. She is going to be miserable, she
does not like to be alone. I had an appointment for 2 other cats on
Monday. I am switching her out with one of them so that I can get her
completely checked out. Not that heart failure is contagious, but I need
to be more on top of my FELV+ cats, or now, cat. I can't do this anymore,
I don't know how yall do it. I don't have "too many" cats overall, but I
do think I have "too many" to handle many chronically ill (or potentially
chronically ill). I guess any cat is "potentially chronically ill." By
the way, I fell even more in love with this doctor when he told me he had
taken home 2 FELV+ kittens from the clinic and they died before 10 months
old. I read between the lines that someone wanted their FELV+ kittens
euthanized or did not want them when they tested pos.

[Felvtalk] Plan for Coco

2015-09-27 Thread Kelley S
Hi all,

Coco is FELV+ kitty #2. My plan for her so she doesn't feel so alone until
I can bring myself to mix (all other kitties have tested negative, some
multiple times) is to buy a large cat condo and put her in it at least a
couple hours a day out here. Now, what I want to ask yall about is
spaying. She is unsprayed. There is NO chance of her getting out (she'd
have to get out of the FELV room, then out of the basement, then upstairs
then out an exterior door upstairs, which is not going to happen, plus when
we leave we go out the garage door to go out so if anyone WERE to follow us
they'd still just be in the garage). As long as I've had her she has never
seemed to go into heat. If she did it was a silent heat. Is it more
stressful to spay her or more stressful to not spay her?

She is a beautiful medium hair orange girl.

I am going to ask the doctor about Winstrol for her. I am debating taking
her to the holistic vet but she is so expensive here ($400 for an initial
visit). I have her on Standard Process Feline Immune System support 1
tablet 2x day. I am putting a Seresto collar on her if I can keep it on
her We have a bad flea problem here and nothing I am doing is helping. I
have lived all over the south and this is the worst flea problem I've ever
seen. We have tried diatomaceous earth. Advantage doesn't do much at
all. Revolution works for a little while. I have some Advantage spray
which kills adults, larva and eggs to spray on carpeted furniture I am
taking the blankies out of that room and wash them in hot water and dry on
high heat to kill eggsEven our vet does not know what to do. I am
declaring WAR on these flea.

[Felvtalk] Very worried about Merlin

2015-09-26 Thread Kelley S
Hi all,

Merlin has stopped eating his wet food. I had noticed more and more food
remaining in the FELV cat room and watched him carefully tonight. He is
also not grooming. He DID pass a normal amount of stool (which I guess
means he has been eating something), unfortunately he passed the stool on
his blankie and then lay down right there. I am going to try to get him
into the vet in the am, but it is Saturday and I know he will be busy. If
he can't work me in I am going to at least try to get some AD and see if I
can syringe feed it to him.

2015-09-26 Thread Kelley S
Well, I got him up to the vet. He is dehydrated and had lost weight. He
has an ulcer on his tongue but nothing worse than some he has had in the
past and his mouth looked better than I expected, though I was hoping it
was something like that that a steroid shot would help. The primary issues
the FELV has caused him in the past have been stomatitis and mouth ulcers
and persistent uri. His body temp is low. I forget the number but at
least 2 degrees too low. They are keeping him and giving him supportive
care while they try to figure out what is wrong. They have him on a
heating pad and are administering fluids. I left him there and then we
went to get something to eat because I was shaky. I have now been up over
24 hours. I just called and he did eat a tablespoon and a half of food on
his own for them, so perhaps his condition is not as dire as I feared,
though his condition remains guarded. I hope any of this made sense I'm
more tired than I have been in a long time and I want to try to stay up til
6 for the vet's call or I will never wake up when the phone rings

6 pm update. His temperature is up to 98 degrees. He has had an antibiotic

favorite hunting spot, if it doesn't upset Brock (Harley's FeLV+ roommate).

The last several days, Harley could only have broth (tuna juice, the
juice from Fancy Feast Appetizers, etc.) and he had a difficult time
getting even that down due to the growth of his cancer. Rather than take
the chance of him choking on his broth over the weekend, I took him to the

Re: [Felvtalk] Update on Harley Brock

2015-04-28 Thread Kelley S
I'm so sorry. There is a good Yahoo feline heart disease group. I lost my
Missy to heart disease.

Harley has been with me 4.5 years, since he was a kitten of almost 4
months old, FeLV+ since then. Brock was adopted as a companion for Harley
7 months ago, after Harley's FeLV+ buddy Milkdud died last May.

Harley was diagnosed with cancer in the middle ear jaw area in March,
and he had one palliative radiation treatment at the end of March. He was
supposed to get his 2nd treatment a few days later, and the tumor had grown
just enough that he could not be intubated. No anesthesia = no radiation
treatment. The tumor is causing some pressure behind his right eye, and is
pressing on the inner ear also, causing balance issues sometimes. He gets
meloxicam and buprenorphine (extended release) every 3 days, and this keeps
him comfortable enough to eat (soft food liquid), groom a little, roll
over for belly rubs, and once in a while bat a toy, scratch on his Turbo
Scratcher with the light-up ball, or rub his nose on a catnip toy.

Brock gave me a shock. I took him in for a voracious appetite without
gaining weight, and itchiness around the head and neck, thinking maybe
hyperthyroidism. Blood work showed potential kidney issue, urinalysis the
same, high blood pressure. An ultrasound was scheduled to look at the
kidneys, and everybody was surprise to find he had free fluid in his
abdominal area. 110 cc of chyle was drawn off, needle aspirations taken of
kidney and liver. Almost certainly lymphoma, they thought. Cytology came
back negative for that, and he went to see a cardiologist and get an
echocardiogram. Final diagnosis: restrictive cardiomyopathy with
congestive heart failure. He is only 4-5 years old. He does not look or
act like anything is wrong, and the physical exam never suggested he had
that pleural effusion in there. Now he is on 4 heart meds, and a potassium
supplement. The pleural effusion is under control for now, but I've been
told this kind of cardiomyopathy is the worst of 3 kinds.

Hi Lance,

I've been doing some reading on stomatitis since Merls has been diagnosed
with it. There's a product called Plaque Off that is supposed to help with
dental issues. It's composed entirely of seaweed so it won't do any harm
in any case. Best wishes for both the kitties. Please keep us posted.
That's odd they suspect calici. Have they been exposed to any other cats?

Callie was hydrated, and they did some testing. I don’t know the details

might be dealing with feline calicivirus, but it’s also possible that she
has an autoimmune condition. They’ve put her on Carafate (Sucralfate) every

In the one case of Calici I did run across the kitten turned out fine. We
had to syringe feed him due to the abcesses in his mouth, but he had a 100%

The c in the FVRCP vaccine is calicivirus. It covers calici,
Rhinotracheitis,
and
Panleukopenia. Current recommendations are for the initial series as a

I don't think ANY vaccine can possibly hope to cover all the various
strains of anything. I just find it so odd that a mature cat would all of

quite well developed after a year of age. I'm not a vet and am not trying

Hi everyone,

I have good reason to believe that the cats I mention below are
 negatives.
I’m not 100% sure, but one of them has had no exposure to my angel
 Ember in
the last nine years, and the other one who did have a run-in was
 tested at
36 days out and then about a year out. Both tests came back negative.

Our 9yro cat Callie stayed on her blanket all day Wednesday, which
 isn’t
unusual in general cat behavior, but a bit off. On Thursday, she hid
 under
the bed and acted scared whenever she came out (tail down and dashing
 to
get somewhere). She popped out a few times to follow a toy I was
 tempting
her with, but she would go back to hiding in short order. We realized
 that
she hadn’t been eating (she feels thinner to me), and I noticed that
 her
coat seemed different, though I can’t explain how. Maybe a bit more
 dull,
   but not really?

Callie was taken to the vet on Friday. Bloodwork looked normal (I’m not
sure what they tested, but I imagine it was a CBC with some metabolism)
though her potassium level was low. The vet thought this was due to
 her not
eating. They x-rayed her (pretty normal), checked her heart (normal),
palpated her (normal), took temperature (no fever), so they kept her
 for
the day to see if they could find out more. After getting a sample,
 her vet
said her urine had a lot of bacteria in it. They gave her a shot
(Convenia, I’m guessing) and asked to see her in two weeks or sooner
 if she
   doesn’t start to feel better.

Around Wednesday, I noticed that our other cat, 11.5yro Sidney, felt
 like
he might have lost some weight. It turned out that he also had not been
eating. Sidney’s behavior was more normal for him, but he
 didn’t/doesn’t
feel well. He was taken to the vet today, and unfortunately, I only
 have a
vague picture of how that went. The tech thought she saw an ulcer in
Sidney’s mouth, but the vet said he might have some inflammation and
scheduled him for a dental. He got fluids and a shot (again, probably
   Convenia) and was sent home.

Sidney is drooling quite a bit and hasn’t eaten since this morning.
 He’s
clearly not feeling well, but he’s keeping closer to his normal
 routine,
whereas Callie is not. She probably hasn’t had time to bounce back
 yet, but
she’s still not eating; only drinking a little. She’s a little more
   interactive, but nowhere near normal.

We’re tempting them with everything we can including tuna, Fancy Feast
Chicken, treats, snacks, etc. I don’t think we can do much more other
 than
keep looking for things that they can’t resist at least nibbling on.

I’m wondering what my fellow cat guardians think of this situation. It
seems unusual that two adult cats would get sick at the same time.

though her potassium level was low. The vet thought this was due to her not
eating. They x-rayed her (pretty normal), checked her heart (normal),
palpated her (normal), took temperature (no fever), so they kept her for
the day to see if they could find out more. After getting a sample, her vet
said her urine had a lot of bacteria in it. They gave her a shot
(Convenia, I’m guessing) and asked to see her in two weeks or sooner if she
 doesn’t start to feel better.

Around Wednesday, I noticed that our other cat, 11.5yro Sidney, felt like
he might have lost some weight. It turned out that he also had not been
eating. Sidney’s behavior was more normal for him, but he didn’t/doesn’t
feel well. He was taken to the vet today, and unfortunately, I only have a
vague picture of how that went.

He’s
clearly not feeling well, but he’s keeping closer to his normal routine,
whereas Callie is not. She probably hasn’t had time to bounce back yet, but
she’s still not eating; only drinking a little. She’s a little more
 interactive, but nowhere near normal.

We’re tempting them with everything we can including tuna, Fancy Feast
Chicken, treats, snacks, etc. I don’t think we can do much more other than
keep looking for things that they can’t resist at least nibbling on.

I’m wondering what my fellow cat guardians think of this situation. It
seems unusual that two adult cats would get sick at the same time.

[Felvtalk] Merlin - good news bad news

2015-01-30 Thread Kelley S
Well folks,

The good news is - Merlin has gained a lot of weight. . Went from 5.6 to
7.5. He eats wet food consistently and a little dry food. I have him on
grain-free canned.

The bad news is his congestion has not gotten any better. He still has no
ocular or nasal involvement. The OTHER bad news is that his mouth looks
dreadful. He is now diagnosed formally with stomatitis. He got a
cortisone shot and a prescription for zithro. Walgreens wants $90 for it.
Not happening. As I have a scrip I was able to source it easily online,
but discovered my old source for zithro suspension, 1drugstore-online.com,
is gone. Does anyone have a current source for ordering zithro online with
out a scrip?

Thanks,

Kelley and Merlin

Well, it has been over a month and Merlin still has a cold. He has no
ocular or nasal involvement. He has sneezing and congestion. When I took
him to the vet in my new location, he diagnosed him with a mouth tumor.
Also gave him antibiotics. I took him back for surgery a week later. I
called that am and told them he was still symptomatic and asked if they
wanted me to bring him in and they said yes because they thought the tumor
may be contributing to his breathing problem.

I contacted the holistic vet up here and they gave me an estimate of $600.
The office visit is $200, which I actually get because they give you an
entire hour. Then they want to run a URI panel, which is another $200, and
then some other test which I can't remember. Merlin is worth any amount of
money to me, but I do have other cats and I just have a problem spending
$600 on a cold when either he or they may need something more urgently
later and if I have already spent money I will not have the money then.

So I called my old holistic vet, who I dearly love. I told her what this
vet wanted to do, and she asked who the vet was, I told her, she said she
knew of her but did not know her. So she said the URI panel will tell
what is causing the URI, but as he has had antibiotics additional
antibiotics are not going to help, so it is likely the URI panel will tell
us the cause is viral, in which case antibiotics were never indicated to
begin with and there is no cure for a virus. So that's basically a waste
of $200. That concerns me. My old vet didn't come right out and say it
but I don't think she is pleased with this vet. She doesn't think Merlin
should have been under anaesthesia a week after tx for a cold. Also the
vet apparently gave him 2 doses of Revolution a week apart. He did not
tell me or charge me for the last one but it is in his chart. Also he took
2 teeth out and did not tell me. So, does he need a dental? If so I would
have highly preferred them to call and ask to do it while he was already
 under.

My holistic vet wants him to be on Natrum Muriaticum, which I looked up and
it is table salt. At least if that is a waste of money it will be a waste
of .88. Also wants him nebulized with saline, and on a raw diet which I am
lagging badly in having him on.

By the way, I am not getting anyone's initial posts here. Sometimes I get
the follow ups. No way to tell if I am getting them all.

[Felvtalk] Merlin to vet

2014-12-19 Thread Kelley S
Hi folks,

I'm taking Merlin to the vet Monday. He seems congested and sneezing. No
nasal or ocular discharge but he's dropped weight. He is eating, I just
fed him canned. Drinking too.

Now, my regular vet is a really really nice guy, but he has little
experience with FELV by his own admission. I think most people around here
euth for FELV. I'm trying to establish a relationship with a holistic vet
but he needs to be seen sooner than that will happen.

I'm thinking this vet will give him a convenia injection. Does that seem
reasonable and does it work for your kitties?

Anything else I should keep in mind?

Thanks all,

Re: [Felvtalk] 5 leukemia positive kittens

2014-11-15 Thread Kelley S
but I would like to say that I never said anything about not placing
these cats in homes with other FeLV positive cats. I said I would do an
IFA first because both Cornell and the SPCA suggest that. I have
researched this disease for the past 10 years of my life and talked to vets
all over the country about it. I've talked to sanctuaries as well and many
will not take a leuk positive cat without a positive IFA. If the cat is
going to convert and you send it to a home with leukemia when it is IFA
negative, you could be giving that kitten a death sentence when it could
have a happy full life leukemia free. Right now we are giving them 30 days
to start converting and then we will retest. But if somebody wanted one
and they had cats with leukemia, I just would want to make sure the kitten
is truly positive. As I mentioned, we recently had 5 positives at our
rescue and I posted it about it a while back. They are now all leuk free
on both the Elisa and IFA. We separated them from the positive mom and we
gave them 90 days to convert before retesting. They have been tested 3
times as negative and Cornell, the SPCA and numerous vets said they are
leukemia free and can be adopted out as such. I know that is highly
unlikely but it can happen. The SNAP tests only indicates exposure, not
true infection from what I've been told. Not every exposed cat remains
infected as you all know and I just want to be sure these are true
positives if they are going to mix with leuk positives.

So anyway, that is all I can say about these babies. Not sure why people
are on my case. I thought this would be a great resource because I've seen
people ask about finding a leuk positive kitty. Just wanted to post here
in case somebody was willing to open their home and heart to one of these
 babies.

Btw, to the poster that told me I most likely have 3 girls. Yes, I
suspected the blue cream, the tortie and the calico would be girls. They
are. The black and the gray and white are boys. I just wasn't 100 sure
 yet :)

 Marsha..sorry..when I said I don't know what you want I was referring
to the OP, who if I recall correctly said something along the lines of we
don't want these cats in with other FELV+ cats if they could possibly be
negative. So the way I read her post was: we want people with no cats
who are willing to take the very probable heartbreak of a FELV+ kitten and
promise to not expose it to other FELV+ cats and who will pay us over a
hundred dollars for doing so. This is possible, but not very likely
IMHO. Even in our rescue, after a certain point they would eat up over
$100 worth of food and we would be losing money even if we did get $100
plus for them. More importantly, everyone is limited in space, and an
animal in a foster home means another animal your rescue cannot help.
The facebook group is interesting, and I encourage those on Facebook to
join, not that I want to take traffic away from here, but most are very
very very very stridently against mixing.I tried to get them to come
here, but haven't had any luck that I know of. There is a very strange
situation going on there that I'd like to get some input on. There is a
kitten who has tested (snap and IFA) pos for FELV. This kitten came from a
breeder who tests all her cats regularly and none has ever tested
positive. The kitten's owner took the kitten to the vet as per contract
within 10 days of buying the cat and got a positive test. Rechecked with
IFA, still positive. ALL THE OTHER CATS were retested by the breeder and
are still negative. All the other kittens in the litter have tested
negative. HOW did this kitten contract FELV?

We altered her, vaccinated her, tested and retested her. We charged $25

2014-11-14 Thread Kelley S
There are some other places to list on Facebook, if you would like the
links. One thing that struck me when I read your post was confusion on my
part as to what exactly you wanted. It seemed to me reading it, and I may
be reading things into this, that you did not want the kittens to go to a
home with FELV+ cats in there already. That, in addition to the adoption
fee, is going to make it *almost* impossible to ever find these kittens a
home (nothing is 100% impossible of course). Also, once you adopt the
kitten out, you don't have control over what the adopters do later. They
may bring in FELV+ cats later. My heart kitty died of heart disease
brought on by a congenital defect. I spent a lot of time holding her and
crying because she was going to die. They are all going to die, we hope
after many years in a happy home. I spent more time mourning her death
than I did celebrating her life. This was a grave mistake on my part.

people are looking specifically for a FeLV+ cat as a companion for one they
already have, and not putting that in the heading forces those people to
sift through every special needs listing to find the FeLV+ kitty. I turned
to PetFinder after having no luck locally finding a companion for Harley,
and did a search by zip code. I specified up to 100 miles, and that's
how I found Brock. Actually, 113 miles away, but the search goes by zip
 code.

There are also some listings here (up for adoption or looking to adopt
 FeLV, FIV, FIP +): http://www.bemikitties.com/felv/cgi-bin/suite/

You can also get to that by the felineleukemia.org website.

 Amy,
I wish you the best of luck in placing these kittens. I had a litter of 4

year old. It was a very busy year, but they were a lovely little group and
it was nice seeing them stay together as a family for the time they had.
I have to agree with Kelley that a $115 adoption fee in reality is not
likely to help you get them placed in homes. In my experience, people just
don't want to adopt and get attached to, much less pay a fee for, a kitty
who will probably not live long. I was lucky enough to be working with a
larger rescue organization who covered their shots, spay/neuters and
testing expenses. I just provided the home, food, love and tears :)
I suggest making flyers with the best photos you can get, and make them
sound very friendly and loving. Play the sympathy card for all it's worth!

Marsha..sorry..when I said I don't know what you want I was referring to
the OP, who if I recall correctly said something along the lines of we
don't want these cats in with other FELV+ cats if they could possibly be

who are willing to take the very probable heartbreak of a FELV+ kitten and
promise to not expose it to other FELV+ cats and who will pay us over a
hundred dollars for doing so.

Idea for everyone: make up a flyer with some basic info about FeLV, with
a picture of one or more or your FeLV+ cats looking happy and living the
good life. Maybe put a link on the flyer to felineleukemia.org or other
resource(s). Distribute the flyer to local vet offices for when the vet
gets a client with a cat that tests positive. The vet could show the flyer
to the owner so that the owner can see that there is support available, and
that FeLV+ cats can live a happy life for a variable number of years.

home with FELV+ cats in there already.

Kelly, I think she wants to wait until they are confirmed positive with an

I kept Brock quarantined from Harley until I got a positive IFA test on
Brock. Brock had ony ever had a single Snap test at the shelter to say he
was FeLV+. Looking back, I would have requested (and paid for) a vet local
to the shelter to do an IFA. That would have made it easier for the
shelter to adopt out a negative cat, while I continued to search for a
positive companion for Harley. But I had already brought Brock home, so if
he had by chance tested negative on my vet's IFA, then I would have kept
him separate from my negatives until he got a 2nd negative, then be put
with them instead, and I would then have searched for another possible
companion for Harley. Someday I may consider mixing negatives positives,
especially if treatments are developed like there are for HIV, where it's
not cured, but knocks the transmissible virus load to near zero. But for
now I keep them separate, because I don't want to deal with the guilt I
would have if just ONE negative cat got infected.

As for the lone FeLV+ kitten, that's pretty bizarre. I don't think
there's any way for anyone not directly involved to know what happened.
Most likely either the breeder or the buyer knows or suspects, but isn't
telling. The only other possibility I can think of is that the virus
somehow was passed genetically, and the exact right circumstances allowed
it to manifest in one kitten. Kind of like FIP, in that the virus infects a
large percentage of cats, but only a few have the genetic susceptibility,
and the right circumstances for it to manifest into FIP disease. But that
 doesn't seem so likely.

 Hi Matt and Roughy!!

I just read your email and sense you need a quick answer to appropriate
dosage for dex (which is a steroid). I don't have a for-sure answer for
you but, I can say thisI am a health care therapist and also a patient
due to several autoimmune diseases. This I know in humans, oral steroids
are given in most cases in multiple doses (2-4) a day as it is a short
 acting medication.

I would go by the printed dosage which is usually correct. The best
avenue to get quick feedback is on Face Book. There is a page for Owners
of Feline Leukemia and FIV cats There are some very active ppl with a lot
of experience that will answer pretty quickly. I have had only a couple
posts here. I like and post a lot on the face book page almost daily.

Wishing you and Roughy the best, and good health,

 Susan and Sophia

he didn’t eat. On Friday, I took him to the vet. The vet said he was
extremely anemic…unfortunately, I was too shell shocked to ask for a copy
of the lab results so I can’t say what that means. He gave him a shot of
dexamethasone on Friday and gave him fluids. He seemed much better when I
took him home. He gave me some dex to give him to him. I could have sworn
he said one time a day, but the label says 2 times per day (every 12
hours). My concern is that I am giving him too much dex. The dosage per
pill is 0.5 mg which nets to 1 mg per 24 hours. Is this ok/normal? This is
the first anemia I have experienced and I am really worried. Poor Roughy
had a really rough night Friday. Last night was a bit better, but he still
seems to be struggling. I would really appreciate it if anyone knows if
that dosage is ok. Of course, I have tried contacting my vet, but I can’t
 get him.

 Thanks!

 Subject: [Felvtalk] Just tested positive

 Hello everyone,

My cat Merlot, just tested positive for FeLV yesterday afternoon. We had
him tested, because my three year old cat Yang (female) started acting ill
at the end of June, the next morning I took her in to the vets and we
discovered she was anemic, jaundiced and had a high fever. They checked
her blood levels and found she was anemic (about 13, vs 26 in a healthy
cat). She stayed at the vet during the day and her blood levels didn't
get any worse, and our vet was optimistic. They transferred her over to
the emergency clinic which was open all evening and in to the weekend.
They monitored her overnight and her red blood cells decreased, her fever
lowered but she went past normal to too cold. That morning the blood tests
came back and she was positive for FeLV. We were shocked. Even worse was
that her detailed blood work showed no uptick in blood cell production,
where she should have increased production, she actually had almost no
production. We then got to see her before we had to put her down.
That was the hardest day of my life.

Now, with Merlot testing positive I am terrified of losing him so quickly,
and I am still grieving for Yang. I know the statistics are not great for
long term prognosis, but he is currently healthy (just a tiny bit of
gingivitis - we are going to start brushing his teeth). What can I do to
keep him healthy? How do I live with him everyday without starting to
grieve him already? I know we all are going to die someday, but this just
feels like it is going to hang over me. I am still doing reading on the
disease and newer treatments and such, but do these all start after the cat
becomes noticeably ill, or are there things I can be doing now to help keep
him healthy? Are probiotics helpful in this case?

For those who have or have had a healthy FeLV cat, how long did they stay
 healthy for?

[Felvtalk] 2nd holistic vet visit

2014-03-26 Thread Kelley
Took Merls in today. Could not afford it but I was really worried about his
mouth. He has nasty lesions but is still eating. He will be on the feline
immune booster as well as a holistic concoction for his mouth. Recheck in 3
weeks.
