What a jerk!  A little poop never hurt, and besides, who knows if  
it's the cats or not?  I would definitely keep an eye out on this  
guy and I would report his "threat" to the ASPCA in case anything  
happens to the kitties.  I'll be praying for them.

I'm thrilled to hear he has had a change of heart.  I wonder what 
turned things around, but really, I don't care.  Good vibes that he 
stays in his present state of mind toward the cats and you.  Maybe his 
wife does have some influence on him.  The house next door to me has a 
"for rent" sign in the window.  I'm past the point of wishing for 
like-minded people to move in when the houses turn over, I just hope 
they aren't hostile and that if they do have pets they care for them.  
Maybe you guys could send some good energy my way?

Hi everyone, just wanted to give you an update on the neighbor situation. I was 
out back last night and saw my neighbor and told him I'd take care of any pooh 
issues and to let me know if he has any other issueshe said no no, that is 
okay. I have calmed down and am not mad at anyone. They are just animals. My 
wife saw the cat out back yesterday and it went out of the yardI said they 
are unowned kitties and are afraid of people and I don't let my cats outside. 
He said I know I know. His wife popped her head out of the window and said not 
to worry -- they are animals and that happens everywhere. I said I just want to 
make sure they are happy, and she said we are happy we are happy. Which is all 
wonderful! I am still going to keep checking tho and cleaning any poop up -- 
some animal is still pooping down there.

   Maybe you can provide outdoor covered litter boxes for the kitties 
until you can trap them an come up with a enclosure solution, if that is 
possible.  Or as Nina said maybe you can appease your neighbor by 
cleaning up after them and making it less kitty friendly.


This guys solution is despicable, but I can understand his distaste 
finding and stepping in cat poop or for the smell of cat urine in his 
yard.  He should be able to enjoy his yard and not have to give that up 
because of the smell of cat pee, this is exactly why my cats are not 
allowed to roam free.  They have an enclosure they can use anytime until 
we go to bed then it is closed off until the next day.  They do not pee 
or poop outside unless *I let the cat box get too dirty for them* and 
that is not a problem, it doesn't happen very often, and if they did 
well it's my yard and I don't care if they do, I have to clean it.


I know how upset I get when I see a neighbor walking their dog and 
stopping and letting their dog poop in my yard and NOT cleaning up after 
them.  If I wanted to clean dog poop, I would have a dog, I would never 
do anything horrible like your neighbor but I sure will talk to the dogs 
owner about cleaning up after their pet.  And if that doesn't put an end 
to it, I have no problem turning on my hose to clean it up the next time 
they walk by and if that person gets wet, and they will, I'll just let 
them know I'm cleaning up the dog poop they left the last time they went 
for their walk, it's my yard and I don't have to put up with that.


I can understand their frustration, some people enjoy being out in their 
yards and smelling cat pee or stepping in cat poop while your trying to 
enjoy a day in your yard is pretty gross, they shouldn't have to deal 
with it.


I love my animals dearly but I don't think that gives me the right to 
force them on other people, same as I don't think parents of human 
children have the right to force them on me in public places, if your 
kids can't behave, leave them at home, I for one don't think it's cute 
when they are running all over the restaurant screaming.

You need to get them used to eating and excreting on your property.
   
  Try moving the food from the front of the house (a foot or two at a time) to 
the back.
   
  You may also want to put out a big litterbox. (I have an under-the-bed 
plastic storage box that is the size of 3 normal litterboxes but I know someone 
who uses a child's plastic wading pool instead.)  You can fill it with the 
pellets that are used for woodburning stoves.  These are light, scoopable and 
biodegradable.  (You can also just find an area of your back yard and pour bags 
of the wood stove pellets on the ground.  That's how a friend dealt with 
neighbors' complaints about her ferals.)

certainly don't want him putting poison down for your unsuspecting  
cats.  Nip this feud in the bud, it's not about you, it's about the  
safety of your babies.  I would figure out some sort of enclosure  
if you can and start trapping asap.  I'm sorry this has happened.

First of all, call the police and animal control and report each and  
every confrontation you have had with these people, time and date and  
what your neighbor has said.  We have creep neighbors who trap cats  
and release them miles away and apparently also kill them in our  
lovely university suburb.  The animal control people AND the police  
are concerned and have both spoken with them more than once.  When  
told that trapping animals was illegal he got a state permit.  They  
say that the cats steal the fish out of their fish pond.  More likely  
the raccoons.  My mother lost cats before we found out what was going  
on.  Once she was looking for hewr old scared white boy and she found  
him in their garage.  They got mad at her for going in there to find  
him.  He later disappeared along with the cutest, tiniest little  
feral black cat and his little feral mommy.  The best we can legally  
do is to watch their backyard to be sure there is no havahart trap  
back there.  So did one of our neighbors who feeds ferals and, (as an  
aside) also has about ten indoor cats AND the cleanest, most perfect  
house I've ever seen.  It just shines!


He drove my mom's old cat 25 miles away and let him out in a forest  
preserve.  The only reason we got him back two long weeks later was  
because he was living under a lady's deck and the lady took him to a  
vet to see that he was healthy before she adopted him because he was  
such a nice old kitty and I had microchipped him for my mom.  But I  
certainly feel the nightmare of losing the others.


I always tell people about these creeps.  If I see a cat out and he  
has a tag I always call the people and tell them about these people.   
It's so disgusting.  I hate it!

Thanks Susan. I actually do belong to the feral cat group -- great group of 
people, just like here! For me, it is so much easier telling other people what 
to do in such situations as this but it is so different for some reason, being 
in it myself.

changed was my husband put stone along the only grassy section in the backyard. 
In the morning, I asked my husband to move the stones as I figured that would 
probably make it stop if it was indeed a cat/s.
 
Then, the door bell rings and my neighbor wants to speak to my husband. Of 
course, it was about the cats. My husband said it might not be a cat/s, there 
are skunks and possums. And just to put some wood out to block the cat/s or 
animal/s from going down the steps to the landing.
 
Then the neighbor says if it doesn't stop he's going to kill them! Then my 
husband said he couldn't do that or he'd go to jail -- and my husband said then 
he didn't have time to argue about it and came in.
 
Now, I am worried about the kitties! I would love to take still somewhat feral 
Mom cat (tho she lets me pet her) from the front inside but I have way too many 
cats and doubt she'd appreciate it.  If we ever move, she is definitely coming. 
 
I am crossing my fingers and hoping this blows over.

down what the neighbor said to him yesterday -- but it is a good idea to write 
down everything and dates. I will do my best to muster up niceness when I want 
to scream and talk to the neighbor. The wife doesn't speak very good English so 
I don't think she'd be a good option. 
I really can't trap everybody and relocate...and an enclosure wouldn't work 
where I live now so I am hoping and praying for a positive resolution for all.

As Nina will attest, over on the feral_cats yahoogroup this is referred
to as "being vanilla" and has been proven as one of the best ways to
deal with ignorant and/or hostile people.  Hard as it is, maybe it IS
just a case of getting off on the wrong foot, maybe when not assailed,
as he would consider it, by cat poop and made to feel defensive about it
this guy is actually a nice person.  Or he could be a total waste of
skin.  But either way, maybe you can win him over and keep your kidlets
safe.  Possibly, he may even tell people, hey, I've got these *cat*
people living next door -- but they seem to be okay.  Although it
doesn't sound to me like your husband was actually *being* rude -- I
know how *I* would respond to "I'll kill your cats" -- it would be cool
to defuse the hostility and have neighbors you can actually stand.  Do
you think it would be possible for both of you to bring over a welcome
plate of cookies or something, and tell them you'd like to sit down and
discuss all the stuff Nina mentioned?  You could mention in a
non-accusatory way that the other neighbor liked the cats so it may take
you a little while to figure out what to do, and ask them to bear with
you.
 
Oh, and document everything.  For now, write down the date and content
of the conversations you and your husband have had with the neighbor
already.  Write down what you initially did to placate the guy.  And
later, even if your vanilla meeting goes well, write down everything
that is said and all the actions you subsequently take.  And continue to
document any interactions between the cats and the neighbors.  That way
if, God forbid, something does happen to your cats, you'll have
something to show the cops about the situation.  I really really hope it
doesn't come to that.  Best of luck.  I've had crappy neighbors in my
time, and know how worrisome that can be.

desirable neighborhood causes my overcrowded rescue efforts, but it also
has the benefit of protecting me from just this sort of thing.  I know
how distasteful this suggestion is going to sound, but I think your best
bet is to muster the stomach to appease this horrible new neighbor of
yours.  People like this are desperate for attention.  Give it to him!
If I were you, I'd go over there and tell him that even though these
animals are "strays", you love them and feel responsible for them.   Let
him know you understand why he's upset and, if he'll let you, tell him
what you are planing to do to rectify the situation.  Ask him to allow
you a time frame to see if your ideas are working, (maybe a month).
Don't make suggestions about what he could do, ask him to let you do
these things FOR him.  Clean out his landing, spray cat-be-gone
products, block the entrance, pour wood chips in any area that looks
like a cat might use to relieve themselves.  Enlist his "help" by asking
him to let you know if he spots any cats on his property and to call you
so you can come and clean up any "messes" they make.  I would tell him
you are sorry that you got off on the wrong foot and maybe even
apologize for my husband's rudeness, (very difficult to do, I know).  In
short kiss this guy's ass!  Believe me, I understand how hard this might
be to do, but you have to think of the end result.  You don't want him
calling animal control, and you certainly don't want him putting poison
down for your unsuspecting cats.  Nip this feud in the bud, it's not
about you, it's about the safety of your babies.  I would figure out

Anita,

I'm so sorry.  That stinks that your new neighbor is
being a jerk.  Saying you're going to kill an animal
is very serious and cruel.  Is it an option for you to
speak with the wife when he is not home?  Maybe she
doesn't know that he did this.  Also, could you talk
to the ferals the next time you feed them and explain
the situation and tell them that this guys is
dangerous.  Maybe that would help.  If this situation
gets more serious, there are options, like calling a
shelter to have the ferals trapped and moved to
someplace safe, or calling the aspca on this guy. 
Prayers going out that his heart would soften and that
the kitties stay out of his path.
