Stamp
woohoo!!! So glad to hear stamp is feeling better.Behavior is a good
indicator in my opinion.

Junior too is feeling better wants to rub up against you spastically like
he used to before FeLv.
He also is finally not rough looking. His fur looks like it used to he is
grooming again. He is on his 3rd week of Baytril w/ probiotics added so no
runny poop. Due to his limited eyesight, he has moved into Eric's room. The
other cats cannot bother him there. Eric loves him. I get to be the bad guy
as usual.

Glaucoma
Someone asked about glaucoma, Junior has this in one eye. So far we are not
removing the eye as he does not seem to be in pain from it. My cat Fluffy
also has glaucoma from a traumatic injury. The eye was removed he let me
know that it hurt. I think it would depend on why your cat had glaucoma to
begin with. I cannot see it spreading to the good eye. Like the group said a
blind cat does just fine. I know Junior sees very little and nothing
closeup. He only sees movement. He does fine. He is just leery of the other
cats now. I have 7 more that come inside and one outside cat.

Thanks for such a caring group.

Thank you for asking. unfortunately I did not get home at lunch today (I saw a
dog loose in the bank parking lot and spent my lunch hour unsuccessfully
chasing him), so I haven't seen him since the am and am getting anxious to get
home.

He just kind of flops down next to me and lays stretched out and breathes
heavily. He looks at me and cries. I wake up in the middle of the night to
check to see if he is still there. He runs out in the main part of the house,
which I don't like because then he eats the clumping litter.

I'm supposed to go to the shelter tomorrow night to clean, but I told them I
needed to be with him instead.

Thank you for your kind words.
I know FIP is hard to diagnose, but I've been through it quite a few times
and it was my first thought before the vet even spoke it. I really don't want
to put him through any more. I just want him to be as happy as he can be.

Boy, I hope it isn't FIP.

I think that sometimes you can torture cats by medicating them and force
feeding them when they don't have a chance to get better. But often they DO
get better, if not "cured" then better enough to live for quite a while
longer. I know it is a hard decision to make.

I do rescue myself, and have so far resisted the lure of the Science Diet
program. The bad thing about this program, IMHO, is that you have to
promote Science Diet food to your adopters and I refuse to do that. It is
such a mixed bag, because it IS better food than what a lot of shelters have
to feed, which is Wal Mart food and the like. I just don't want to have to
promote it.

Anyway, that's getting off the subject now. Good luck with little Stamp.

Feline pine isn't too bad, wood is at least partially digestible and
not highly toxic. I doubt it's the litter making him sick, which is
one thing I wanted to eliminate.

Feline pine isn't too bad, wood is at least partially digestible and not
highly toxic. I doubt it's the litter making him sick, which is one thing I
wanted to eliminate.

I would do a month of Doxyclycline, JUST IN CASE. It certainly can't hurt
anything, and if it is hemobart, that should cause an improvement (and if he
imporves while on the treatment, you'll then know he had it). It often
doesn't show up on the test anyways, so testing isn't always helpful. I
think all anemic cats should be treated as if they HAVE hemobart, as it
can't do any harm, but could save their life. Ask you vet if he/she would be
willing to TRY it, you can point out that the alternative is euthanasia, and
that should get him/her to agree that it's worth a "last ditch effort" try,
even if he/she thinks it's unlikely.

Science Diet is mostly CORN. Cats can't process the calories from corn, thus
foods made from corn are practically useless for cats. Most cats do OK on
them, because most cats have very easy to maintain weights (if anything,
most cats tend towards obesity). But when you have a frail cat that is not
keeping his weight, the very first thing you should do is feed the very best
food you can, and that means a food with MEAT as the first two ingredients
on the label. You didn't really answer my question so now that you know
that the food you are feeding him for free is causing him harm, will you try
to find a better food?

hemobart is a nasty little beast--often hard to find, plus it seems to be
regional.. almost three years ago now, one of my vets said that
practically every cat they were sending bloods out on was testing positive,
while other parts of the country still hadn't heard of it. one of mine had
developed anemia from it back in 2000, and that was the first time i'd ever
encountered it

(re: the high incidence here, my initial question to the vet was re: it was
actually endemic here, were the tests more sensitive now, or were they just
testing more regularly for it than they used to?)

Re: Stamp/losing weight

2007-03-14 Thread Nina

Hi Beth,
I remember little Stamp and how he was found at a post office. I'm
sorry he's not doing well at the moment. I understand your reasoning
about not wanting to put your charges through "aggressive" treatment
only to lose them anyway. I really do. However, at least in Stamp's
case, it sounds like you are making this call without enough
information. Yes, a great number of felv kitties do succumb to anemia,
but if you can find out what specifically is causing the anemia and
treat for it, there is a much better chance that they will get better.
You are giving Stamp Clav, and now trying Pred. It seems to me, if you
are willing to treat him, you might as well be treating him with
something that the vet recommends. We were just talking about anemic
symptoms brought on by hemobart, treating with Doxy will help that, but
Clav wouldn't be able to control it. I'm sure you know different abx
are used for different things. Giving him steroids might help him feel
better and they can relieve inflammation, but they also suppress the
immune system. It may not be the best thing for him, and again, if you
are just trying to help him "feel" better, a different steroid, perhaps
Dex, might be a better way to go. Please don't dismiss the possibility
of a blood transfusion helping Stamp at this point. You don't know
what's going on with him yet. It's possible that a blood transfusion
might give him the time he needs to discover what is truly going on and
with proper treatment it might save his life and bring him back to health.

I'm so sorry that you and Stamp are suffering through this. I know what
it's like to fall in love with each and every rescue that crosses our
path and how some dig deeper into our hearts than others. It may be
that Stamp has something that he won't be able to recover from, but
there's no way to know that without further testing. Ask your vet about
the least invasive options to figure out what might be going on, and do
it quickly.

Blessings and prayers,
Nina

I have an FeLV foster cat, Stamp. I have had him since November. I am
at a loss with him at the moment. All my other FeLV cats died from
anemia (I had them PTS at a PCV of about 10). The first one I treated
aggressively, the rest I did not, as I felt I had done the wrong thing
by shoving pills in the first one, making her unhappy, only to lose
her anyway.

I have had Stamp since November. He was a kitten (still is,basically).
He had good weight and great silky black fur. I did, however, catch
him eating litter. I took him to the vet and he had a PCV of 22. Not
terrible for his age (I never realized the normal PCV ranges change as
the grow up). The vet started him on a low dose of Prednisilone. About
2 months ago I had him retested (new vet) and it was 24.

Over the last couple weeks he has started to loose weight, even though
he eats. He loves his Pet Tinic, roast beef, and Science Diet kitten
dry (I know there are better foods, but I get it free from the shelter
because he is a foster). I took him to the vet last week and she did a
CBC. She said he was at the low end of normal on everything. His HCT
(which she said is the same as PCV?) was up to 28. His WBC was
slightly elevated. His ears seem warm sometimes, although he lays on
the heating pad like it is the middle of winter (I'm in Atlanta, so it
is not!). The only thing I have done different is take him off
Prednisone after the second vet I saw claimed they didn't know he was
FeLV positive, or they never would have prescribed it for his anemia
(did they not read the records faxed from the other vet?!) He has been
off that for about a month.

I can feel his back bone some now. He is breathing faster than normal.
He licked the floor around the litter pan this morning (anemia). He
cries sometimes. I started him on Clavamox (they only antibiotic I
have). I have just never had an FeLV act this sick with a PCV that
high. My others never started showing symptoms until it was around a
17 (severly anemic).
The shelter wanted to know if I weanted to do a blood transfusion. I
know with nonregenerative anemia this won't give him more than a
couple extra weeks, so, no. Any suggestions that won't be terribly
invasive? I would thing the quickened breathing would be the anemia. I
started him back on the prednisone last night. (1/2 of a 5mg tab that
I had left over from my FIV cat) Should I have givern him the other
half this morning also? This is way more than he was getting before,
but he is bigger.

I love this little boy so much.

Over the last couple weeks he has started to loose weight, even though he
eats. He loves his Pet Tinic, roast beef, and Science Diet kitten dry (I know
there are better foods, but I get it free from the shelter because he is a
foster). I took him to the vet last week and she did a CBC. She said he was at
the low end of normal on everything. His HCT (which she said is the same as
PCV?) was up to 28. His WBC was slightly elevated. His ears seem warm
sometimes, although he lays on the heating pad like it is the middle of winter
(I'm in Atlanta, so it is not!). The only thing I have done different is take
him off Prednisone after the second vet I saw claimed they didn't know he was
FeLV positive, or they never would have prescribed it for his anemia (did they
not read the records faxed from the other vet?!) He has been off that for about
a month.

I can feel his back bone some now. He is breathing faster than normal. He
licked the floor around the litter pan this morning (anemia). He cries
sometimes. I started him on Clavamox (they only antibiotic I have). I have just
never had an FeLV act this sick with a PCV that high. My others never started
showing symptoms until it was around a 17 (severly anemic).
The shelter wanted to know if I weanted to do a blood transfusion. I know
with nonregenerative anemia this won't give him more than a couple extra weeks,
so, no. Any suggestions that won't be terribly invasive? I would thing the
quickened breathing would be the anemia. I started him back on the prednisone
last night. (1/2 of a 5mg tab that I had left over from my FIV cat) Should I
have givern him the other half this morning also? This is way more than he was
getting before, but he is bigger.

I love this little boy so much.

  Beth

work for someone who only has a few cats. The Worlds Best litter is good

Yeah, I know. The clumping can be deadly, too. The vet said to try pine litter.
I hate that stuff because it becomes sawdust and gets everywhere. I used to
shred newspaper when this would happen, but he is in my bedroom with one of my
negative cats and I can't do that for both of them. I'd be changing litter 4
times a day.
Has anyone had this problem or know what litter is the safest? I tried
Yesterdays News the last time, but they ate that, too.

Petition to REISSUE
SPAY & NEUTER Animal Stamp Dear Committee
Members:We the undersigned are writing to you asking for the
reprinting and continued printing of the sold-out Spay/Neuter stamps, which
feature pictures of Samantha the shelter cat and Kirby the shelter
dog. These stamps are a wonderful way to raise awareness for the
innocent animals who have no voice and suffer the tragic consequences of the
animal companion overpopulation crisis due to human ignorance,
irresponsibility and neglect. The amount of unnecessary pain,
suffering and death inflicted upon our beloved dogs and cats due to
overpopulation is incalculable, as are the human misery and monetary cost
involved in the rescuing, sheltering, medically treating and all too
frequently, killing of surplus animals whose births never should have
happened. Responsible spay/neutering is the humane, sensible approach to
resolving this inexcusable failure of society.Perhaps, one day soon,
through the efforts of ongoing responsible human intervention, weÃââll
effectively mandate, on a national level, the spay/neutering of all dogs and
cats in this country (excepting those exempted for appropriate reasons). The
continued awareness raised by the Spay/Neuter stamps will surely play a
prominent role in helping to achieve this morally imperative
goal.Respectfully the UNDERSIGNEDhttp://www.thePetitionSite.com
