I had a cat tested for FeLV a few weeks ago and she came
back positive. We will retest soon. She is about a year old, maybe
pregnant, and a throw away. I have never had this happen before and I have
done spayrelease for several years with feral cats. I contacted vet
who does alternative medicine and we have her on supplements hoping to boost her
immune system. Can anyone give me any advise on how to care for this
cat? I have one 13 year oldcat that is negative for FeLV but who has
some health problems soI can't even consider letting them together.
Any information would be
appreciated.

RE: Dixie Louise

2005-07-12 Thread Weese, Tracy

As for the immediate future, I'd determine if she is preg., if so and her basic health is good, you might want to have her spayed anyway. Kittens born to this mom will likely test positive (at least initially) and they will be very hard to place. Plus, she really doesn't need to have kittens but you will have to weigh the stress of the harder spay vs. letting her have the kittens

If her health is good, I'd have her spayed.

   Hi,
It sounds like your doing very good, boosting her immune system, and
maybe feeding a good quality food like Wellness or something similar
(something without by-products and grains). Keep stress down and think
positive. What immune boosters is the vet giving her?

Re: Need advice for FELV+ 6 week old kitten!

2005-07-12 Thread Gloria Lane
Hmmm - well, if the kitten tests positive for FELV, then he has the
virus. I think it's an antigen test isn't it, not antibodies, for
the office Elisa test. But as I understand, his little immune system
could still throw the virus off, as you said. He should be tested
again. I really don't know what I'd do - try to support his immune
system or leave him be and do it on his own. I'd probably look at
Interferon. Re Vit C, Dr. Belfield has a reputation for Vit C, and
for using it against FELV. www.belfield.com, I think.

Re when to retest, I don't recall - seems like it's 90 days... Again,
was it a light positive or a strong positive?

Hi All..

I have a friend who's mother in Oregon rescued a little boy
kitten who is about 6 weeks old now. Last week he tested positive
for felv on the in office test. I don't know if it was the Snap or
Elisa. The lady, Margaret, said they also sent out a sample to be
tested at a lab. I believe it was the IFA. She found out today
that it is also positive. I asked if they reported that it was
replicating in his bone marrow and she asked the vet's office. The
person said they thought that in order for it to be positive on the
IFA that it would indicate it was replicating in the bone marrow.
Is that true?

When Margaret's daughter called to ask advice, I told her that
a kitten may test positive from the mother cat's antibodies and
that the kitten could possibly throw off the virus with good care,
human grade food, stress level kept down and Interferon if the
kitten is old enough to take it. I recommended Wellness kitten
food and Margaret purchased both dry and canned Wellness.
Margaret's vet upon seeing the positive test recommended euthanasia
immediately. Margaret said absolutely not! She said they had
already fallen in love with him and he was energetic showing no
signs of illness. I know this lady very well having taught her and
her daughter almost 15 years ago how to bottle raise 5 orphan
kittens. She will do whatever is necessary to keep this kitten
healthy and loved.

Here are the questions for which I need answers:

1) Can a 6 week old kitten be on Interferon? I recommended the
newest protocol (which I use) of daily Interferon. I use 1 ml
daily for my adult cats. What would the dose be for a 2-3 lb. (I
think) kitten?

2) If the kitten is positive with the IFA and/or is
replicating in his bone marrow, will he remain persistently
positive or can he throw if off?

3) Also, if replicating in bone marrow if/when should he be
tested again?

4) What other supplements would be recommended? Vit C? What
dose for a kitten? L-Lysine? What dose for kitten?

If any of you have any other recommendations, please feel free
to mention them. I will be calling Margaret tonight or tomorrow to
read some of your answers. I will also be printing them out and
mailing them to her. Margaret is in her early 70's and I don't
know whether she has a computer.

I really appreciate any advice you all might have for this cat/
kitten loving lady. All of my experience with felv+ with my cats
have been as adults. I have never had a tiny positive kitten. I
know I could go to the archives, but I still have dial up and
limited internet time so I'm hoping you all don't mind repeating
advice for Margaret.

Thank you so much.

proceeded to mark most of the cat beds! But she would just squat and
let out a few drops of urine...never completely released the contents of
her bladder... :)

Then they played with the foil, tore it into bits, and peed in the

You BOUGHT a $450 area

You must not be as much of a crazy cat lady as

have one, but I keep it thrown up over the shower bar, and only use it during
showers, as soon as I am dry, I pick it up and throw it back up out of "cat pee

in the "cat pee" hamper now.

I wouldn't suggest replacing the rug it will
just be ruined again.Rugs are areal waste of money if you have
cats.

I have a "rug" at the door entrance. It's
a2 foot long cut section of heavy-dutyrubber backed high traffic
carpet runner (the industrial stuff you see at businesses in the aisles). If
they pee on it, the pee stays on it, and doesn't soak through to the carpet
under it. I take it to the car wash down the road, pour a gallon of undiluted
vinegar on it, let it soak for 5 minutes, and then spray it with the high
pressure car soap (it's hot), then rinse it with the high pressure rinse. I got
it at a reducedprice at the hardware store, because it was a remnant, cost
me $12 ($6 a foot).

Yeah, I had heard that as well...I think there's some debate about the
issue which, I believe, comes down to how confident the surgeon is with
performing a spay on a female in heat...perhaps something to do with
blood vessels (associated with the uterus/ovaries) being enlarged and
the risk associated with nicking one of those vessels, or something to
that effect...I'm not entirely sure. But Lola was certainly in heat,
and I even mentioned this to the vet the day of the surgery having heard
that a cat in heat shouldn't be spayed...but my vet didn't even bat an
eye...and Lola came through with flying colors! :)

I have a "rug" at the door entrance. It's a2 foot long cut section of heavy-dutyrubber backed high traffic carpet runner (the industrial stuff you see at businesses in the aisles). If they pee on it, the pee stays on it, and doesn't soak through to the carpet under it. I take it to the car wash down the road, pour a gallon of undiluted vinegar on it, let it soak for 5 minutes, and then spray it with the high pressure car soap (it's hot), then rinse it with the high pressure rinse. I got it at a reducedprice at the hardware store, because it was a remnant, cost me $12 ($6 a foot).

Oh, the first thing I did when I moved into this
apartment was peel back all the carpeting and see if there was any usable floor
underneath. Luckily, in the bedroom there was decent wood floor, so I was able
to toss the carpet in that room. The office has a very thin indoor/outdoor type
of carpet with no padding overindustrial tile, and the cats don't seem to
like to pee on it (if they do, I'll take the carpet out). The livingroom is an
issue, under it, is plain plywood, and it has, literally, about 5000 nails all
across the entire floor. it would LOOK HORRIBLE if I pulled up the carpet. Since
I rent, I'm not going to sink a ton of money into adding nice flooring myself,
so we just deal with spots as they occur in there. That's why I paid a
deposit :)

and some info about the fab trio:
http://www.mondowendell.com/mtb.html
MC ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) has more contact information for the owner and if no closer home can be found will take them (cats in San Francisco, MC in Michigan), but as she has limited space and does fostering, I don't know how well 3 additional adults would work with her 10+ permanent residents (plus about a gazillion kittens - some ready to adopt first week of August)

So those of you in the Pacific Northwest, ask around, use your connections to help these guys!! The only two I know of for sure are Belinda and Terrie, butpull your strings gang! Clawing used to be an issue for me, they still
shred the couch, but not the door frames anymore. I put long strips of regular
clear packaging tape over all the door frames in scratching reach, and they
decided they didn't like the feel of it anymore, because it's slippery and they
can't dig in like on the bare wood, plus if they try too hard, the tape comes
off and usually sticks on them, and they are running through the house with tape
stuck on their bodies, like they are being attacked by a pack of coyotes...
absolutely scares the bejesus out of them! I also, a few years back, invested in
a absolutely WONDERFUL cat tree, I HIGHLY recommend the company to everyone now,
my cats have SHREDDED this thing, and it still looks good, after 3 years and 5
cats. It was a bit pricey though http://www.4yourcat.com/pussicat/index.php
I have the Mont Blanc tree, with the optional
large base, plus I've added on a few extra parts over the years, which is what
is so cool about these, they are completely modular, and you can re-arrange them
and add on endlessly. I can send anyone who is interested in seeing my current
set up a picture in private emails... my pics are too big to send via the list.

It sounds like your doing very good, boosting her immune system, and
maybe feeding a good quality food like Wellness or something similar
(something without by-products and grains). Keep stress down and think
positive. What immune boosters is the vet giving her?

That sounds great especially the drain in the middle of the floor. A couple years ago I spent 8,000.00 to tear up carpet and replace with top of the line wood laminate all through my house. One month later the seams starting lifting and now I have messed up floors. The manufacturer said the warranty does not cover cat urine. I need something I can clean with bleach and soap. Guess cement would be good.

I would very much like to see pictures of your baby Tad. You may send them to me off list since this topic is an OT, but we currently have several babies with missing and/or deformed rear legs and are in the process of adopting another little one who has only 1/2 stubbs for legs. While the ones we have are doing fine (one has about 2/3 of her rear legs and no feet) I am a little concerned about the new baby coming who has only a small amount of leg and no feet. His current care giver says he is using a modified litter box and zipping around the house with his bonded litter mate doing regular kitten things.

She has never known anything else...When I 1st noticed
when she was a day old I worried that she would get pushed away at the
milk bar...7 in the litter...But when you think about it front paws are
more effective at pushing others out of her way...At he end of the 1st
week she was the fattest one of all...Cats always land front paws
1st..She just puts a little more weight on them...She climbs up just
like a jimnast...Gab with the front paws and pull herself up over...She
can reach the desk chair seat from the floor and the top of the dresser
from the seat...and she gets up on the perch on the climbing tree that
was beside the litter box...
People have asked if she could be fitted with dolly wheels...But she
couldn't climb with those..She would be very unhappy
Cats are wonderfully adaptable to their environment and she is the best
proof

Hello all
my name is Katie and i am opening an FIV sanctuary
in iowa.
our
building should be completed by the end of july or
beginning of
august. we plan to rescue cats with FIV,
FeLK, and Diabetes.
currently, i operate Kitties from Heaven, a
no-kill, non profit feline
rescue. We take in healthy cats of all ages from
pretty much anywhere
and find them new homes. our building will
be specifically for
special needs kitties, and each type of kitty will
have their own
room. we will have a cage free environment
with plenty of places for
kitties to climb and hide. we feed all of
our kitties a hard food
diet with vitamin suppliments, unless medical
needs require otherwise.
currently we have one FIV cat, two diabetics, and
two FeLK cats here,
and three FIV kitties waiting for transport.
We believe we will be
able to accept up to 12 of each type of cat, but
won't know for sure
until the building is constructed and we see just
how much room there
is. 12 will be the minimum number, though.
our requirements for acceptance are as follows:
1) cats must be spayed/neutered (or come with a
monetary donation for
the surgery... $40)
2) Cats must be healthy (other than their
initial diagnosis
3) Cats must be free of parasites
4) We ask for a small donation for each cat
to help with future
medical care. all donations will be kept for
the cat with which they
were recieved, and will not be put into a general
fund.

Please keep my information for future referance,
and let me know if
you have any questions.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Thanks
Katie

Clawing used to be an issue for me, they still
shred the couch, but not the door frames anymore. I put long strips of regular
clear packaging tape over all the door frames in scratching reach, and they
decided they didn't like the feel of it anymore, because it's slippery and
they can't dig in like on the bare wood, plus if they try too hard, the tape
comes off and usually sticks on them, and they are running through the house
with tape stuck on their bodies, like they are being attacked by a pack of
coyotes... absolutely scares the bejesus out of them! I also, a few years

company to everyone now, my cats have SHREDDED this thing, and it still looks
good, after 3 years and 5 cats. It was a bit pricey though http://www.4yourcat.com/pussicat/index.php
I have the Mont Blanc tree, with the optional
large base, plus I've added on a few extra parts over the years, which is what

I'm not talking about scotch office tape, I mean
the 2 inch wide clear packaging tape, just to be clear, I know that's what you
are referring to also. And no, my cats don't touch it, they think it will attack
them and kill them. They are very paranoid when it comes to things that stick to
them. They hate having their hair pulled out by the stuff, or getting it stuck
to their paws.

Doobie DOES eat paper and other such things. I
had a stray for a while (Moogie's mom) that ate plastic bags. Doobie sticks with
generally digestible things, mostly toilet paper or junk mail. He rarely throws
it up, he seems to digest it well, though it does make him anemic occasionally,
so I have to dose him with what I fondly refer to as "vity-mighty-mins!" I say
"Dbie, it's time for your Vity-mighty-mins!!!" and he RUNS as fast
as he can and hides... LOL! I think it must taste really
horrible...

RE: Alum foil

2005-07-12 Thread catatonya
A GREAT idea I got once from someone on this list.

Remove the covers on your sofa cushions and put plastic trash bags around the cushions and then put the covers back on. That way, if someone has an 'accident' on your sofa you can remove the covers and wash them without the urine soaking all the way through.

I went looking for a new sofa today and I'm going to buy the type that has a back made of loose cushions so that I can do the same thing on the back cushions since they aren't attached to the sofa.

It does make for some funny noises when people sit down on your sofa though! lol.

I use the wide packing tape to tape the trashbags on. That way nothing leaks through.

Gloria.

I thought I read on here, though, that a kitten this young could be
showing antibodies to felv from his mother?? I'm just trying to find
out if being positive on both the Elisa, Snap and IFA at 5 weeks old
(when tests were given) is proof positive that he will always be
positive or throw it off even if it is in his bone marrow.

Thanks for replying. I don't know if the test was light or strong
positive. I haven't called Margaret yet as so far I have only received
your reply and Hideyos. I hope to receive more replies that answers my
specific questions on my first email. I think Interferon is that way
to go if 6 weeks is not too young. I also think Vitamin C is a good
idea.

 Thanks, Gloria.

again. I really don't know what I'd do - try to support his immune

On Jul 11, 2005, at 5:42 PM, Brenda K. Smith wrote:
