this is indeed feasible ;)

And Mr. Fenton is right about what he said about not seeing further
degradation after several saves. That coincides with the way JPEG Baseline
compression works. [It makes blocks of 8 x 8 pixels values, performs a
Discrete Cosine Transform -passing to the frequency domain-, quantize the
matrix of coefficients (this is were the quality percentage is applied), and
compress the new values (most of them are zeroes now) forming a bit stream
that is sent to the file.]

(Incidentally, as an assignment l had to program a plug-in in C for the GIMP
program, in order to compare the different qualities achieved with the JPEG
compression. Fun stuff...)

All the best,

[Finale] [OT] Sofia Gubaidulina's Johannes Passion

2009-01-14 Thread Javier Ruiz
Dear listers,

Last night I heard the Johannes Passion by Sofia Gubaidulina, performed by
the orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater of St Petersburg (conducted by
Gergiev).

What a text! and what a music! Incredible austere and moving but
astonishingly strong at times.

I read somewhere that there is no bad or good music but simply true or
false. Then Guibadulina really did a true masterwork of Christian music.

I just wanted to share this amazing experience, so you don't miss to hear
the piece if you have the opportunity.

All the best from Tenerife,

[Finale] Two easy doubts [Finale 2008]

2008-01-08 Thread Javier Ruiz
Hello all and feliz 2008!

As I am not working anymore as a copyist I find difficult to answer to this
two questions of my teacher Tom Johnson.
I would be very grateful if someone can enlighten me with this two small
things:

This is what he wrote me:

"How do you convince this new beast [Finale 2008] to select partial
measures?

How do you make it copy a bar 40 times instead of only once?

These things should be easy to find in their help files, but I've lost an
awful lot of time trying that."

But...

Maybe Lilypond will accept MusicXML files in the future. Then one could

Or Finale will add "Export to Lilypond"

Or Makemusic could buy-out those two guys who are doing Lilypond and add all

Or all of us will go back to dirty manual work, spending one day to copy a

[Finale] OT James Tenney 1934-2006

2006-09-06 Thread Javier Ruiz
Dear all,

The past 24th of August we lost a fabulous composer. He died of lung cancer.

I had the great pleasure to meet him in 1994 in Berlin.

Re: [Finale] bulk multimeasure update?

2005-12-29 Thread Javier Ruiz
Mmm, yes!

You have to make a FinaleScript script with this content

batch process folder
don't process current document
import multimeasure rests options
save and append "_2k4"
close all

Then open one file of the set of parts, and change the multimeasure rest
manually. This will be your master file for batch processing the folder.

Run the script and you are done.

Hope it helps.

Javier Ruiz.

P.S. FinaleScript is great, but Makemusic should include more examples.

Re: [Finale] Finale EPS graphics in MS Word

2005-12-27 Thread Javier Ruiz
Hi, Chuck.

I can confirm this strange behaviour, it happens also with other programs
like Appleworks. Maybe it is a bug...

The only solution I can offer is to use TIFF files instead of EPS. 300 dpi
will be enough.

For preview purposes works perfectly although you will have to prepare EPS
files for the final layout of the book (that probably will be made in
QuarkXPress or InDesign).

[If you already have a lot of EPS files you can convert with the Preview
program.]

¡Salud para el 2006!

Re: [Finale] Dealing with parts

2005-12-22 Thread Javier Ruiz
Hi,

In some rare cases is better to make a super-score with all the parts in
separated staves. Then extract the parts, layout them and print them and
after that mix the parts creating staves with several instruments to make a
nice conductor's score.

[Finale] Standard Wide vibrato sign?

2005-12-21 Thread Javier Ruiz
Hola a todos,

Is there an standard wide vibrato sign?

I made myself one but the client says that is too big. Having in mind her
experience with music notation (she uses two tied quarter notes instead of a
half note!) I am tempted to forget her suggestion but maybe I should consult
the oracle first.

TIA,

Javier ruiz.

I have a friend who has one keyboard exactly like that but without MIDI. It
comes with a sound bank and a small loudspeaker. I have tried to play it and

Re: [Finale] big format, how to manage

2005-12-08 Thread Javier Ruiz
Hola, Josue.

I wish you the best luck for your project, but I would do some steps right
now:

1) Buy one large screen. 19" CRT screens are cheap these days and they will
give you the space you need desperately. Keep the palettes and tools in the
small screen.

2) Warn you client about the difficulties, and be calm and patient.

3) Make hundred of backup copies. Rename every file each time you finish
something valuable. Internal 2.5" disks are very sensitive and delicate. Go
buy and external firewire disk right now!

4) Hire an assistant! There are many knowledgeable people on this list, but
I think that Dennis Bathory-Kitsz is the perfect person. He has helped me
with a couple of big scores and I owe him a lot.

All the best,
Javier, composer in quarantaine.

Hi,

They exist already, but the installation requires some patience and care.
The PC needs a particular Intel motherboard and two hard disks.
(I read it in extremetech.com but I can not find now)

Of course you can boot with Windows or Linux if you want.

IMO if

the thesis of Johannes is that we Mac-freaks are going to move to Windows
simply because the new MacIntels will boot with it

then

I don´t agree, because you can _now_ buy a cheap small factor PC now, hook
it to your existing monitor and there you go. You don´t need more to make a
good virus trap.
Besides the price factor is becoming less and less important when buying Mac
hardware (except in the higest G5 models).

No, no, that´s wrong, Chuck:

Never get there the first. You have to arrive an hour and a half or two
hours late. That will give you the maximum prestige.

Moreover if you are seen reading in a café you may face the accusation of be
bored. Just look at the girls passing by!

P.S. Remember to double check the meeting by cell phone. Say you have a
meeting at 17:00. Call your friend at 18:00 and tell him/her that you are
about to leave the hotel. Don´t look like you are sorry. He/she will be
probably ask you to delay the appointment until 19:00 because he/she has got
something to do. Don´t you dare to arrive before 20:00!! Remember that we
dine late in here.
If it is a SHE then try to arrive even later or not at all. That will keep
her interested.

Re: [Finale] MIDI file questions

2005-10-28 Thread Javier Ruiz
Hola, Chuck!
The most important is to have a different (Finale) instrument defined for
each staff and/or voice. Every instrument defined will appear as a track in
the exported MIDI file. If you fail to do so, Finale will mix all the notes
sharing the same (Finale) instrument in the same track.
Percussion maps should not be a problem.

Good luck!

Sorry to disagree but...

...even USB 1.1 is 12 Mbps which is faster than ethernet 10.
With low-end printers the bottleneck is always in the printer (processor and
memory) and the printing engine (pages per minute).

The iMac G5 has 3 USB ports, run the two printers directly and put the hub
in the one left. Then plug your other USB devices to the hub (like the

A MIDI interface can be connected to the USB connector in the keyboard.

Hola Noel,
In my experience page density for printed music should be close to 8% on
average for orchestral music parts.

So expect to print about 2/3 of the rated page count of the toner.

[Note: You can measure density using Photoshop, selecting all and applying
the average plug-in. The level of grey obtained tells you about the
density.]

Hasta otra ocasión, muchacho.

Dear Dean,
Unless the printer has an Ethernet connection, it can cost you a lot to
connect the old printer to the iMac G5. Very old Apple LaserWriter printers
had Appletalk connections that only connects to a printer port.

Can you tell me the model?

[But if the printer has an Ethernet connection Mac OS X will recognize it

I meant that complete portions, parts, fragments of the work you had been
working on simply disappear. Not all the music only 100 bars or so in my
case.
I am sorry, I am Spanish and I probably don't use the proper expressions to
explain the problem.

The files themselves do not look to be corrupted in the sense that they can
be opened. But they were corrupted in the sense that the data was there and
it got scrambled or erased or whatever.

But, Hiro, it looks like you don't want to admit the possibility of this. I
wish I could share your view, but unfortunately I saw it with my poor, old
and tired eyes.

Time for another cup of tea.

Finale

[ref: Order number is SO0251658. Order total was $278.85.]

Sirs,

By this time, you are probably aware of the problem: Finale 2006 is
completely unusable for professional use.

As probably has been reported by many users, there is an unknown
circumstance where complete portions of a file get completely erased.
The erased bars look like as if you had apply a blank notation staff style.

This awful situation has been confirmed by other professional users.

Even if one follows a rigid discipline of backup copies, it is very likely
that you may loose hours and hours of work.
Of course if you are not aware of the problem, and depending on your backup
scheme, you may loose weeks or months of hard work.

I think that the whole Finale community got very excited with the
introduction of Finale GPO, and we embraced happily the new upgrade.
However, since the release of the upgrade many irritating bugs have been
reported.

Let's make things clear: this is not another bug, it is a failure in the
basic set of features of any program. It is simply unacceptable from the
customer's point of view.

I hereby formally requesting a total refund of the upgrade, shipping costs,
and additional tax expenses of the purchasing process.

As soon as I receive the refund I will destroy my copy of the installation
DVD, and erase the installed version in my computer.

I am sure that you eventually will be able to release a working version of
Finale. You have done that in the past, and you will in the future, but for
now, Finale 2006 is not ready.

Thanks,
Javier Ruiz.

I agree completely here, Jim.

I just can´t imagine a sound technician saying to the Kronos Quartet: Sorry

I know, I know ProTools is much, much more expensive.
Wait a minute, no, you can buy it for 600$... Then it _can_ erases your
takes, or the take you record one hour ago with some guest musician
playing...

Yes, Johannes, but what happens if you don´t notice that the bug has
striked? In my case complete portions of finished copied music were erased.
Portions that were in the middle of the work, not at the end where I was
working.

And yes, I immediately looked for the backup copies, but they were already
saved and of course ruined. Only by chance (I was working with both an
internal and external disk) I found a way to recover the work.

I sincerely hope that the bug never bites you, and that Makemusic could fix
all problems ASAP.

Dear folks,
As a customer and as an adviser for music schools I have put more money in
Coda/MakeMusic pocket than in other software company. Many, many licenses...

I have been a defender of Finale over Sibelius in uncountable occasions.

Boy, I even bought SmartMusic with my last upgrade!

I simply don´t want my work to disappear. I can not conceive that a program
erases what you are inputting. This is not a bug. It is like selling you a
toaster that does not toast. You simply return it and get the money back.

Fortunately we consumers in Europe have protection against this problems.

I am going to ask for a total refund of the cost of the upgrade or a similar
compensation.

I´ll post here my claim to MakeMusic so you all can see my reasons.

Believe me, I love the new features in Finale 2006, like the invaluable
split measure plug-in but I can not be a beta tester without knowing it.

Now you know, the Bug is still there, alive and waiting to ruin your careful

Re: [Finale] OT: PHP Midi Class and Inaccurate Durations

2005-10-10 Thread Javier Ruiz
I tried the class with some files made by me (and I mean completely created
form scratch using a program I made) and the result came out right.

You could try to open the MIDI files with a sequencer, export them again as
MIDI files and try the class again.

I have found that Finale does funny things with MIDI sometimes.

Hope you find the solution!

[Finale] Free Font management software for Mac OS X

2005-09-16 Thread Javier Ruiz
For those who need a font management software, this new found in Macinotuch
may be of interest:

[Adam Rice] Linotype is now offering a free font-management tool [Linotype
FontExplorer X] that competes with Font Agent and Suitcase, and allows you
to buy fonts from within its interface (sort of like the iTunes Music

it, but I figure some folks out there might be interested.

Re: [Finale] Underscore

2005-09-13 Thread Javier Ruiz
Hola, Dragos,

The solution is not to use the underscore sign at all.

Instead use the letter "I" (that´s an capital i) with Engraver font or a "b"
in Tocatta font.

My procedure is first to enter a bogus character like "#" everytime I need
an undertie. At the end I pass a little FinaleScript script to replace all
the instances of "#" with the undertie sign. Then I re-space the music.

Look at the script below. (You can paste it into a new one).

//Search for the sign # in all the lyrics and replace it with the undertie
Search lyrics "#" replace "I" [EngraverFontSet] 20 plain
//End of script!

Is rather amazing that Finale provides no help for something that is needed
in almost every vocal piece in Spanish, French, Italian and, probably,
Romanian.

Saludos, Javier.

[Finale] Berio's Symphony [was US © question]

2005-09-10 Thread Javier Ruiz
Dear folks,

I have nice remeberings of that symphony, because I heard it live in
Tenerife sung by the New Swingle Singers. There was not the original group
that premiered the work but the result was astonishing. [They have the work
recorded under Pierre Boulez.]

Some 15 years later I had the luck (also in Tenerife) to see Berio himself
conducting the premier of a concerto for two pianos.
Boy! there were masses of sound moving like lava, not to mention the beauty
of the Laveque sisters.

Hola, Johannes.

Do you mean a file that includes EPS files inside as graphics?

I ask that because in my Panther system Finale exports perfect PDF files
from the print dialog. I mean they are vector graphics based, not bitmap.

Also if I export a page to EPS (using the graphics tool) and open it with
Preview it also renders to vector graphics...

Send me a test file privately if you want me to test it in my system.

[Finale] My first orchestral commission

2004-11-21 Thread Javier Ruiz
Dear colleagues:

If I remember well, Dennis Bathory-Kitsz announced recently here that he had
received a commission for a piece to be performed by the Vermont SO.
[That crystallized in a superb piece called Icecut, that you can hear in his
website]

After that precedent I dare to do the same, but this time the story is
double-sided.

A friend of mine and probably the best composer in my island, Tenerife, died
last 11th after falling down 500 meters in a mountain near I live.
He was a viola player of the orchestra and one of the best man I ever knew.
His name was Enrique Guimerá.

As a heritage he left one piano trio to be premiered next Sunday, a mixed
rock-orchestra piece to be released as a CD and a symphony to be premiered
next January. Amazing!

To make a long story short he had proposed me to compose together a piece
for young children divided in 7 small movements. After his death and
precisely the day of his funeral I was given the commission to do it myself.

I´ll do my best and I´ll let you know.

Voilà. C'est tout.

Javier Ruiz.

P.S. There was a common joke with Enrique about if he put resin or not on
his viola's bow. Most of us thought he did not and that was the reason why
our orchestra sounded so well.

[Finale] Naming extracted parts BUG

2004-11-08 Thread Javier Ruiz
Dear sirs,

Platform: Finale 2004, Mac OS X 10.3.5

*
BUG in naming extracted parts with certain file names.
*

If the name of the file contains accented letters
(like in á or é) or other characters like ø or å,
the names of the extracted parts will contain a string of spurious
characters, usually Chinese, Japanese or Korean, at the end.

Ex. If the file is named Sinfonía 1.mus the extracted parts will show as

Sinfonía 1 Flute 1.mus |@#¢ƒ¬÷÷³

This problem has been reported by several users.

I hope you can find a fix for this annoying bug that force users no to use
their local language.

Saludos, Javier.
