[Flexradio] Flex 5000A - How to open the case.

2016-09-28 Thread John Walker
I got it fine. I wanted to do my home work before prying on it.

It sure was clean inside, I expected lots of dust.

Very easy to take a part and go through it. The power button never lined up
good and would get stuck.

I removed the front cover and drilled out the power button hole.

All back together now.

Thanks for all who replied.

2016-02-18 Thread John Ferrell
Remote operation will add latency and I don't think any of the vnc
variants will handle audio. The computer and the Flex will need to be
co-located due to the Firewire Specs.

If all else fails, you can run that computer "headless" (look into
something called "TightVNC" to run your old machine remotely from a new
one) and leave the old box under your feet or on a shelf somewhere.

Some higher end PCs will run something called Thunderbird. It probably has
enough throughput to run Firewire. Haven't looked, but you can check it
out.

You can also still get and old fashioned desktop for pretty cheap . I just
got an i3 on Craigs List for backup for my own Flex computing and it
upgraded to Win 10 just fine. 200 bucks. Don't know about IEEE as I now
run a 6300. But, you should be able, still, to make something like this
work.

Is it possible to use a Flex 5000 via a USB3 cable and a Firewire adapter?

I am very saddened by the devaluation of my Flex Radio and shocked to see
what upgrading to a 6500 would cost. Perhaps I should give away my 5000
and just buy a new radio, but I wanted to see if there's any way I could
still use it with a newer computer that no longer has Firewire.

Thanks, Dale Taylor

New laptops are available with firewire capability. Apple MacBooks have had the
faster firewire 800 for as long as I can remember. They now use the blisteringly
fast thunderbolt port. Then from the Apple Store buy the Thunderbolt >Firewire
400
adapter cable for $ 30. I have current model MacMini’s, MacBook Pro’s and iMacs
that all run from the Thunderbolt port via the adapter cable to my Flex-5000 and
my Flex-3000. PSDR is installed on a separate partition using Bootcamp and
Windows 7.

Runs really smoothly, most of my Mac’s run at less than 7 % CPU with PSDR and
with
lots of other apps running in the background

Re: [Flexradio] Transverter

2015-12-17 Thread John Ferrell
I like my Flex500A but this is one of the areas that is especially
disappointing. There are no real benefits when using the transverter.
You cannot even tune NOAA weather. Bandwidth controls are ineffective.
If you are happy just being a a user all is well. If you are an
experimenter hoping for a tunable IF as you work your way up, it is not
in this box. Drop back to SoftRock and restart.
If you are a contester the tools provided in the Flex still look great
to me.

Re: [Flexradio] FlexRadio Digest, Vol 127, Issue 7

2015-11-20 Thread John Ferrell

That is beginning to make sense.
My background is mostly IBM mainframe fixit guy. To properly follow
this direction will take me quite a while due to needing to learn a
bunch more that I am missing.
I THINK I had a situation where it worked OK but the next morning it
came back.
The current Ham Radio Deluxe says one of the minimum specs is 8G of
memory. I am running the 32 bit W10 which AFIK is limited to 4G.

Options:
Upgrade W10 OS to 64 bit. (much time & very Messy!)
Downgrade to Win 7, still out of specs but it worked there. (I don't
like being out of spec and I seldom retreat except to regroup!)
Get new W10 64bit computer. (The worst that can happen is that I am
upgrading sooner than planned.)

Having spent a lifetime in the business I would not appreciate anyone
giving me a problem to fix when they had not met specs on their part.
Besides, in addition to running the Flex5000A I like to have a ready to
run setup with by TenTec Jupiter. Trying to setup a Jupiter as a second
option in HRD gets real squirmy due to the presence of VAC.

In any case, I will stop and evaluate the situation.
Yes, I am still having fun!

Re: [Flexradio] Radio

2015-07-21 Thread John Kramer

Bill

With the MFJ-1025 or 1026, you need a second antenna that hears the level of
noise as strong as, or stronger
than what you hear it on your main antenna. It is quite easy and intuitive
using a Flex radio to see if the noise
source is being picked up equally strong. You really need to first determine
where the noise is coming from.
If it is a neighbour, then install a low wire antenna along the boundary
fence/wall/hedge with your neighbour,
trying different antennas or antenna orientation to maximise the noise level on
your “noise antenna”.
Then using the MFJ-1026 you just null out the noise on your main antenna.
There are many youtube clips on youtube showing you how it’s done. Just search
for MFJ-1026 on youtube

up a receiving antenna almost to match the one I have up But lower than the one
I have up?? I then use the MFJ. device to tune out the noise??

Re: [Flexradio] Noise cancellation Flex 6000 series

2015-07-15 Thread John Kramer
Steve

Yes, it is clearly understood in the demonstration that they are using two
antennas.
That is how I use it with the MFJ-1026 noise cancel device - a main antenna and
a second noise antenna, where the noise on the second antenna is as strong as..
or stronger than, the main antenna…that is what is essential to null out the
noise.
And yes, all credits due to Flex for first pioneering the feature in PSDR.
However, I would put the priority level for this feature in SmartSDR to be
right at
the top. Often having this feature or not would make the difference between
spending
time on the radio, or switching off and going to watch TV. You can’t operate
when
the receiver is totally swamped by neighbourhood noise. For me, it would be a
top
priority. YMMV

the antenna diversity required out of a single antenna feed. As Tim said, the
ANAN-100D is using the software developed by Flex for their 5000. It will come
with the new software versions of the 6700, but I understand it is lower on the
software implementation priority since few users have the diverse antennas to
take advantage.

It sure works great on the Flex 5000 with RX2 .

Re: [Flexradio] Noise cancellation Flex 6000 series

2015-07-15 Thread John Kramer
Hi Tim

If you have a couple of minutes, this is the youtube clip I was referring to…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdQm17udCSo

Absolutely amazing how the noise can be phased/nulled out. If Flex can get this
incorporated in a future firmware build, they will have a winner. Living in a
city
with noise pollution can often make ham radio operating impossible. When I
switch
on and see a green/yellow waterfall due to neighbour QRM, I simply switch my
rig
off.

The MFJ-1026 is an option, and I bought one, but it is fiddly and messy with
cables running all over the shack - much easier to accomplish the same from
within the SDR.

[Flexradio] Noise cancellation Flex 6000 series

2015-07-14 Thread John Kramer
I love my Flex-5000, 3000 and 1500, but I’m wanting to find a feature to
motivate me to buy a new Flex-6000 series rig.
As we all know, living in the city presents major problems. Mine appear at
around 4.00pm when people start getting home
from work and turning appliances on - noise levels shoot up, until after
11.00pm.
I just watched a youtube video where an ANAN-100D was demonstrated. It shows
the two ADC receivers in the rig being
used to phase out noise in the band….much the same way an MFJ-1026 is used to
change the phasing of two antenna’s.
It really was quite awesome to watch how noise was reduced and most times
removed totally from a band by changing the
phasing of the two receivers.
Can this be done with the new Flex 6000 rigs ? and is it supported in SmartSDR
? if it can be done…any links to videos
available ? This feature would twist my arm enough to placing an order for a
new Flex-6000 series rig

I just realized that my 3K it did not have a sticker on it either. I think that
it was a 2013 or 2014 unit.If the original shipping box is available, you might
be able to find the sticker on a label there. That's where mine was. I don't
know what the rationale was for omitting the stickers on the unit.

Thanks Ray for that info - I am admittedly a bit techno challenged when it

third party programs to PowerSDR. I haven’t yet tried using DDUtil, although I

three Flex rigs for three years now
But guess I should give it a serious try, now that I can see the benefits.

Re: [Flexradio] PowerSDR

2014-09-17 Thread John Kramer
Oh, I forgot to add to the voice recordings. In addition to the quick memory
bank, and auto
TX/RX of recordings, it would also be good to have a user defined replay
facility. So for example
choose your CQ recording, and then have it key up on it’s own, play the
recording, go to RX,
then wait xx seconds, before playing the recording again, over and over until
the operator
intervenes. Similar to how most current K/I/Y radio’s work

Re: [Flexradio] PowerSDR

2014-09-17 Thread John Kramer
Hi Steve

Yes, the current iteration of PowerSDR is mature and a fantastic interface to
legacy radio’s. There are no bugs that I have found….HOWEVER…
I think there are some features that would be nice to have in PSDR. Not
critical, but would be awesome to have.

1. Voice recordings - for personal choice, I take my Flex-3000 on regular
DXpeditions to Mozambique.
I yearn for the facility of being able to have several recordings (not just
one), like a
quick memory bank of 10 right on the front panel, so you don’t have to dig in
sub-menus to find it,
where I can select a recording, and with the push of only one corresponding
button next to the recording
of choice, have the radio key itself up, send the recording, and return to RX
all on it’s own.
The current system where you have to push the PTT, push the play button, and
release the
PTT seems a bit archaic.

2. Working a pileup on CW, I find it quite awkward to adjust CW speed on the
fly. Yes, it can be
done through the FlexControl (if you have one). But I would like to see another
method. When working
a large pileup, the stations come in at different speeds. It is cordial to
adjust your speed to the station
calling you. It can be time consuming to grab the slider and try to get to the
correct speed. Possibly
having 4 small boxes, where the speed can be user defined at say 20 25 30 35
wpm. Then all it would
require is just a click of the appropriate box to QRS to work a slow operator.

There are a few more much needed features that would be awesome to have, but I
have forgotten
what they were. But as far as bugs - yes it’s currently very stable.

[Flexradio] Frustrated with VAC, WSJT and Fkex

2014-07-19 Thread John Vandenberg

You may try my settings I collected...

WSJT-X OPERATION (JT9 and JT65)

Version 1.2 of WSJT-X offers two protocols or “modes,” JT9 and JT65.
Both are designed for making reliable,
confirmed QSOs under extreme weak-signal conditions. They use nearly
identical message structure and source
encoding. JT65 was designed for EME (“moonbounce”) on the VHF/UHF bands
and has also proved very effective
for worldwide QRP communication at HF. JT9 is optimized for the LF, MF,
and HF bands. It is about 2 dB more
sensitive than JT65 while using less than 10% of the bandwidth. Both
modes use one-minute timed sequences of
alternating transmission and reception, so a minimal QSO takes 4 to 6
minutes — two or three transmissions by each
station, one sending in odd minutes and the other even. World-wide QSOs
are possible with power levels of a few

watts and compromise antennas.
Note: WSTJ-X implements both JT9 and JT65
Introduction http://www.physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/wsjtx.html
Frequencies http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.radio.wsjt/318
Band Dial Freq
(m) (MHz)

160 1.838
80 3.576
60 5.357
40 7.076
30 10.138
20 14.076
17 18.102
15 21.076
12 24.917
10 28.076
6 50.276
With above dial frequency settings JT65 signals would be expected at
audio frequencies

270 to 2270 Hz, JT9 signals at 2500 to 4000 Hz.

CONFIGURATION OF WSJT-X
• My Call: ve3dvv
• My Grid: FN03bd
• PTT
DTR com8 (com18 in PWRSDR)
Test it with 'Test PT' button.
• Enable PSK Reporter
• Enable CAT: com5 (RCP3 in DDUtil)
Note: If not using DDUtil use Com11 for CAT
• Rig: Kenwood TS-2000
•
• Audio in: Vac2
• Audio out: Vac1
CONFIGURATION OF PWRSDR (via DDUTIL)
• Keep Vac and Cat like default (see DDUTIL and VAC)
• Select DIGU mode and Low/Hi filter: 200/4200Hz

OPERATION
• Read and follow 'Basic Operating Tutorial' in users guide
• In 'WideGraph' click Green marker for receive freq. For both RX&TX
hold Ctrl while clicking.

• Favourite settings:
Bins/Pixel7, Start0, Zero -3, N Avg 5, JT652500 JT9, Slope 1.1, Gain 0,
Current, Default

WHAT TO CHECK IF IT DOES NOT WORK
• Load VAC control panel and check both VAC In/Out are running at 48.000Hz
If not correct settings check VAC
• Check if VAC is enabled in PWRSDR-Setup Audio/VAC
• Check WSJT-X User's Guide
• Check reports on http://wsprnet.org/drupal/
• Check for time accuracy on computer. Use Dimension 4 from
HTTP://www.thinkman.com/dimension

and double check that with WWV

Have fun

Yes, I once had WSJT (JT-65A) working, but that was two computers ago. I've
even made one six meter ENE contact and been heard by several stations.
With
W7GJ now at KH8, I'd like to try to work him. But, without WSJY, VAC and
Power SDR working together, there's no chance.

I do have VAC installed and the latest Released version of WSJT as well as
VSP manager. So, I don't need instructions on downloading and installing
same. The OLD Knowledge Center article that I printed out a year or two
ago,
spends a lot of verbiage on downloading and installing these programs. It
talks about installing VAC into Power SDR Version 1.14.0. That's how old it
is.

One of things it says it to make sure that Flex 5000 Firewire device driver
is set to the same parameters and Safe Mode 1 is the operating mode. It
refers to another Knowledge Center article to explain how to do this.

Going to the Flex Website, I find no place to find Knowledge Center
articles
anymore. Has the Knowledge Center been done away with? I did find a
so-called White Paper entitled

"LEVERAGING SDR FOR BETTER DIGITAL MODE COMMUNICATIONS". But it is nothing
but a sales pitch for software defined radio and VAC. I don't need a sales
pitch. I'm already convinced re SDR and have been for years..

What I need is a good up-to-date step-by-step description of what
parameters
to set into Power SDR, VAC and WSJT. At the moment, I'm getting an ERROR
message in WSJT saying "Error in opening audio channels" and some other
stuff that says it won't work.

I DID have the audio stream running normally an hour or so back, but I've
obviously messed it up now.

Frustrated,

Bill Tynan, W3XO/5 EM00kd

Dudley,

I agree. Our club had an Astron RM-35 that had the series pass transistor
fail (short). The output voltage went to the maximum provided by the
transformer & the 2 rigs connected to it were damaged. The Yaesu FT-950
was
repairable, but a Yaesu FM rig was not economical to repair.

A problem with linear supplies is that if the series transistor fails, the
result is a serious over-voltage situation.

Subject: [Flexradio] to order a 6300 or not.

?? ? ? ?I have had Flex rigs from the first 1000 kit to my current 5000a.
I have downloaded all the spec sheets, that are out there, and read all
the beta testing remarks from the various testers. None of which really
tell me much about how the 6300 will work out in the real world, under day
to day hamming. I have not seen any comparisons to the performance of the
6300/5000a, weather they be suggested improvements over the 5000a or even
improvements based on the new 6300's technology.
?? ? ? ? The 6300, looks great on paper and the engineering write-ups,
but what will I gain in "REAL LIFE"day to day operation over my 5000a.
Iam not a con tester, like to work dx and also rag chew. I do little CW
any longer, arthritis in the fingers, the 5000a could be easily passed up,
for this mode.
?? ? ? ?I already have a big investment in the computer,I-7 ,to run the
5000a, which of course would run the 6300 also,so thats a wash. I like
the audio on my 5000a, use a balanced condenser mic and have received
comments on the pleasant audio. Would have to go back to the unbalanced
on the 6300.
?? ? ? ? I run a hex beam and do not need the tuner ,but I also run a
vertical and a OCF dipole for 160 to 80 meters which I do need the tuner
on the 5000a for.
?? ? ? ? ?I guess Iam looking for reasons to dump the 5000a and move UP
to the 6300,so far Iam not seeing many, other than being the first guy on
the block to buy the new model car.
?? ? ? ? ?Thanks for reading, would like to hear other guys thoughts on
the subject.

Shouldn't SPLIT clear when changing bands? Is there a setup option I'm

[Flexradio] Flex radios are the worst polluters ??

2014-04-22 Thread John Kramer
I read a disturbing post on the TS-2000 reflector claiming that the legacy Flex
radio’s pollute the
bands with noise….it claimed that the Flex-5000, 3000 and 1500 are by far the
worst of any modern
radio.

The poster also said that under no circumstances should a Flex be used with an
amplifier, as all
this noise is amplified.

Of course I jumped in to defend the Flex radio’s..

Then I received a private mail from the poster with a link to show an extensive
study that was done
which proves this point

Any technical hams, and Flex in particular, please read this link. I would love
to hear comments
on the validity of this claim

[Flexradio] Radiosport headset for Flex radios

2014-03-28 Thread John Kramer
I own the 3 Flex 5000 / 3000 and 1500 radio’s, and I am looking to buy a really
good headset to use with them.

I have been turned off the Heil variants, and want to try something better. I
know that the Radiosport
headsets are rated very favourably. They are pricy when trying to buy a pair
outside the USA, and I don’t
mind paying for quality, but I also don’t want to make a mistake. They look
really large and heavy….and
whats up with the PTT button on the side of the ear cup - I can’t see myself
poking the earpiece everytime
I want to PTT. Yes, I have a foot pedal PTT, but what happens when I go
portable…I don’t want to
lug a PTT foot pedal wherever I go.

Do any of you Flexers own a pair of these Radiosport headsets ? and what is the
audio like ? both TX and RX ?
Comfort ? not too heavy ? How would it rate compared to a cheaper Yamaha or
computer headset ?

Hello all,
As I have mentioned in the past few weeks my monitor is wiping out my two
meter radio. Although I have noted been aware of it I would bet it is
getting into my 3000 as well. I have loaded this thing with ferrite beads,
cores, and clamps to everything on it short of going inside it. Well, I
give up. It is an RCA TV monitor which allows you to run the computer as
well. So, I will dump it. My question then is, what kind of Computer
monitor are you guys using that does not put out all that RF? Plasma is
bad, LED is bad, Again, what are you guys using in the 20 inch range.
Thanks Bill

model to the appropriate selection (FLEX-5000, FLEX -3000, etc) and then
restart PowerSDR.”

I’m not sure what to enter in the Setup Form.

When I click to enter the demo, the demo comes up fine and I can play with it.
(I don’t think that means I’m connected to my 3000)

I get the sense that windows did not recognize the firewire (which you guys
warned might happen with Parallels)

I am running bootcamp on my Macbook also. Flex 3000 works okay there so I’m not
under pressure to get Parallels working. I know there are guys out there
interested in knowing if Parallels will work, so I can be your guinea pig if
you like.

I have another half month of free phone support with Parallels, if there is a
question you think I should shoot at them.

Darryl,

Do you have the Auto Enable box checked?

In Setup click on the Audio Tab and then VAC 1 Tab, Check the box Enable VAC
1, then check the Auto Enable box. The next time you set DIGL/U mode it
should turn on the VAC.

I just upgraded to 2.7.2 and I am having problems with the VAC. It seems to
go mute sometimes when I change bands or if the software freezes because
dpc.

Anyone having this issue.

Flex folks, I know the DPC isn't your problems, but couldn't you detect it
and do a reset when it happens?

I just got a new Macbook Air. I installed Parallels 9 with Windows 8.1. I have

Parallels going through Thunderbolt to Flex since Parallels now claims to

[Flexradio] post

2014-01-08 Thread John Paolucci
[this is my first post - I think this is the way it is done :) ]

Antenna hook up question

Here is my situation. I live in a valley location where antennas do not get out
well. But I’m in a mountain area where I can drive to nice mountain top
locations. So I plan on using the Flex 3000 with a laptop while parked in my
car up high. Before, I used an Icom IC-7000 with an AH-4 automatic tuner hooked
a Eagle One 31FT push up fiberglass mast (single wire inside the mast), and
laid out a few ground radials. Tuning was a breeze on 80-10.

I did web searches and found that hooking an AH-4 to a Flex 3000 may not be
easy. I’m selling the IC-7000 so might as well sell the AH-4 with it too.

I have a MFJ-933B automatic tuner which should be more universal than the AH-4
and I can use it with the 32 FT vertical wire.

So I have two questions here.

I presume that the Flex 3000 auto-tune does not have the range to match the 32
foot single wire on all bands even if I figured some way to hook the single
wire to coax?

Second, Flex 3000's Flexwire i/o can be wired to trigger the MFJ-933B? I
suppose I could just key the Flex on low power while hitting the “tune” button
on the MFJ, but it would be ideal if they were linked to one software “tune”
button on the Flex.

Strange you mention that - I have never had this problem before, but it
happened to me this morning.
I was working a pileup with my Flex-3000 and older version 2.5 PSDR software.
At first I thought it
was my keyer, but cycling the PSDR on/off button restored it. It’s the first
time it has happened to me

[Flexradio] PSDR v2.7.2

2013-12-21 Thread John Swink
When I upgraded PSDR from v2.6.4 to v2.7.2 for my F5000A + VU I was unable
to get the data transfer program to work and had to manually update the data
base.

While creating the new transmit profiles, I discovered that the drive level
was now saved in the profile. I use amps on 160, 6 & 2 meters and had
reduced drive levels set for these bands to avoid overdriving the amps. In
v2.6.4 I had one profile setup for each mic and mode, and now in v2.7.2 I
have had to create additional profiles for these bands with reduced drive
levels to avoid overdriving the amps.

Has anyone else experienced this condition?

I don't know if this change was intentional or if it is a bug. I would
prefer that the drive level be set and fixed per band and not included in
the transmit profile.

73 and Happy Holidays,

John, N8WNA

Re: [Flexradio] HSDR with HRD and Tmate/Bobsmeter

2013-10-24 Thread John Kramer
Hi Bob

Many thanks for all the information you have provided. It looks really neat
doing it with DDUtil, however
I managed to get all 3 devices talking to each other using VSPE with the help
of Rob.

I am just really happy to have everything working well right now, and am a bit
nervous to do anymore fiddling.
However, I will definitely save your email for future reference, and will try
doing it your way once I have spent
time with it all working on VSPE.
I will then compare VSPE and your method with DDUtil, and see which one works
best.

Thanks Bob, I think you might have unwittingly helped others with similar
problems, with all your good info

It is working as per your guidelines - I can't thank you enough. All three

Thanks Rob, I owe you one

PS. I think it was a good thing you made the info available for all to see - I

Re: [Flexradio] HSDR with HRD and Tmate/Bobsmeter

2013-10-24 Thread John Kramer
Rob

Thank you very much for that detailed explanation…I think the penny has dropped
on my side now.

I have been using VSP MANAGER to create virtual port pairs. I was confused when
you spoke about
a "splitter" and a "connector" port, because there is no such feature in VSP
manager - only
pairs can be created.

So I have just been on the internet and seen VSPE, and it lists the "splitter"
and "connector" that
you talk about. The only thing is…I am running 64 bit Windows 7 here, and I see
I need to buy
a license to run VSPE…..and there is no license required if you have 32 bit
Windows. The owner
explained that it is a Microsoft requirement for them to pay $ 499 every year
to Microsoft to do digital signing
on 64 bit, and so they have to pass the cost onto us - $ 24.95 for a single
license.

I will go ahead and do that, but it looks like I will only get my activation
key in the next 24 hours.

Thanks again Rob, I think I am on the right path now….I am beginning to see the
light.

Re: [Flexradio] HSDR with HRD and Tmate/Bobsmeter

2013-10-24 Thread John Kramer
Hi Rob

No it didn't work - I made a virtual pair COM10 and COM11. I went onto PSDR and
made PSDR COM10,
then I started HRD and told it to connect to COMM11. It connected and talks to
PSDR no problem.
Now when I start theTMate meter by Bobsmeter, I tell the meter to also connect
to COM11, but it tells
me "the port is busy" (because it is already being used by HRD)
I restarted the computer to see if that helps, but no, the meter will still not
connect to COM11 if HRD is
using COM11.
I would appreciate it if you can check on your computer when you get back home
later, and see if there
is something else you did to connect your meter

Hi Rob

I currently have COM4 (PSDR) paired with COM6 (HRD) in VSPE

So, must I delete that pair, and then make a new pair using COM10 and COM11,
and then assign COM10 to PSDR and then everything else to COM11 ?

If I try to connect Tmate meter to COM6 it tells me it is busy (because it is

But if I understand correctly, COM11 is different and will allow multiple
connections ?

[Flexradio] HSDR with HRD and Tmate/Bobsmeter

2013-10-23 Thread John Kramer
This has been bugging me for a long time (about a year).

Long time ago, I connected PSDR to HRD - that was easy to do, using VSP manager
to create a pair. I use PDSR on COM4
and HRD on COM6. But the problem comes in, when I want to link a second device
to PSDR. I want to also link the TMate
plus meter to PSDR.

I was able to connect the Tmate plus meter and get it working with PSDR using
VSP to create a pair, but then I can't use HRD because
the pair is made with only one second virtual port. How do I get both the meter
and HRD to work with PSDR ? The way I understand it,
VSP manager creates a pair with PSDR, but you can't do it a second time i.e. if
PSDR is on COM4 and a pair is created with HRD on COM6,
then I can't create a pair with say COM4 for PSDR and a new virtual port say
COM11 - because COM4 is already paired up with COM6.

I have also downloaded DDutil, but don't see how it can be done there. Totally
confused here - sorry not an IT buff.

[Flexradio] Setting up digital modes problem

2013-10-23 Thread John
Hello

Flex 3000
Power SDR 2.6.4
PC. Windows 8 (64 bit)
VAC 4.12 trial version
Com0Com X64 2.2.2.0 (couldn’t get 3.0.0.0 to work)

Having spent the last 4 evenings trying to set up all of the above to operate
digital modes I still cannot get the system set up correctly
In WSJT, WSPR WSJTX and CW Skimmer when on receive it appears to work ok but
every 8 – 12 seconds there is a spike in the waterfall display for a split
second as though the noise level has increased ( but no noise increase in the
speakers or the Power SDR Panfall ), on WSJT RX noise set at 0 dB and spikes up
to 4 dB, on WSPR it is set at 0 dB and spikes to 27 dB

All the above have been set up according to the Flex Radio Systems Knowledge
Centre and Flex Radio Wiki.

Am sure it’s something simple in the set up but I can’t find it or figure it
out.

Any ideas ?.

Thanks in advance. John Fraser. GM4WJA.

Re: [Flexradio] Powered Speaker Recommendation for Flex 5000

2013-10-09 Thread John Swink
I am using a pair of Cambridge SoundWorks powered speakers from a 15 year old
computer. I had the same problem with RFI. I solved the problem by replacing
the zip cord speaker wire with shielded cable and adding snap-on RF chokes at
the speakers and the amp output.

Curious to hear what folks are using for powered speakers on their Flex 5000.
Presently using a pair of JBL E20 bookshelf speakers with a little amp. Can’t
seem to keep the RF out of the speakers however. Your thoughts and
recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [Flexradio] USB/RS232 adapter

2013-07-28 Thread John Swink
Thanks for all the suggestions & comments.
I have looked at the various products and read the reviews. Based on the
reviews, it appears that the GearMO products using the FTDI chip sets have
the least problems, so will order one and give it a try.
Thanks again for the assistance.

Re: [Flexradio] hardware test software

2013-07-21 Thread John Kramer
Hardware test is built-in….

1) Remove antenna from radio
2) Go to setup and do a database reset
3) Do a production test - CTRL SHIFT P on the keyboard
4) Select what part of the Flex you want tested
5) Push "run selected tests"
6) See your results

[Flexradio] Distorted TX audio PWRSDR-2.6.4

2013-06-26 Thread John Vandenberg
After updating the software in Win7-64 to PWRSDR-2.6.4 the TX audio is
badly distorted (did try reset database). The same update on my
Win7-32 system worked fine. When I checked the FW driver in Device
manager they are both using the 1394 OHCI Compliant Host controller
legacy driver. I was surprised since I thought it would use the new
Flex Firewire driver 4.1.1 .

The FW card uses the TI chip-set and worked fine in previous versions of
PWRSDR.

I would like to try the new FW driver. How do I manual install this
since it did not do this on the update.

Note: using DPCLAT or the Flex program I don`t see any bad DPC`s and the
Flex program recommend `Normal Mode`

Any suggestionsÉ

Re: [Flexradio] Owners Manual

2013-05-26 Thread John Kramer
With the introduction of the Apple iPad tablet, I now have ALL my
manuals/service manuals etc all on my tablet.
There is an app called "Goodreader" for the iPad. Make files in Goodreader for
the various manufacturers, and
download your manuals off the internet and into your iPad. Generally speaking,
my iPad is always with me
wherever I go, so ALL my manuals including VHF/UHF HT, mobile, HF, amplifiers,
ATU, noise cancelling units
etc etc are all on there, and easy and quick to get to. I also have lots of
other ham apps on the tablet, so it is really
convenient to have everything on there and take it with me.
All new manuals that arrive in the boxes, stay untouched and go into my filing
cabinet, and remain in new
condition - something that buyers appreciate if I sell the item one day

Re: [Flexradio] Will SmartSDR have a panafall in the first release? (seems not)

2013-05-22 Thread John Kramer
I tried to tell my fellow Flexers this a few days ago - I was told in February
at the
Orlando Hamcation by one of the senior Flex staff (name withheld) that support
for a waterfall in SmartSDR was not in their long term plan. It resulted in me
getting
jumped on by the Flex-huggers when I informed them.
AFAIAC No waterfall display = deal breaker
The waterfall display in PSDR gives far too much information and usability to
consider moving to a GUI that does not have one. Maybe PSDR has spoilt us
with this fantastic feature, but there is no going backwards for me.

If the decision is changed, and a waterfall and other fine features of PSDR are
added
to SmartSDR, then I would be interested in a 6000 series radio (If I haven't
already
committed myself to another radio). I have no doubt the new hardware will
perform
remarkably well, but the software has a long way to go yet.

Re: [Flexradio] 5000 no more

2013-05-20 Thread John Kramer
My issue is not with the support that I might get with my Flex-5000, and it is
not related to
the availability of a case. I think a lot of you are missing the point here.
What is a big concern
is - where to from here ?. I want to look at the next rig I will be buying, and
there is nothing
that runs on PowerSDR that is an upgrade for me. Currently, the top of the line
Flex radio
that runs on PowerSDR is the Flex-3000. I already have one of those, but I am
wanting to
upgrade from my Flex-5000…..and I don't want to move over to a signature radio
that runs
on SmartSDR. I was recently demonstrated the 6000 series radio with SmartSDR at
the Orlando
Hamcation in February, and I left the demo feeling underwhelmed and
disappointed.

Quite frankly, I prefer PowerSDR, with all the buttons and adjustments on the
display…..not to
mention the beautiful waterfall display. Having used a waterfall for the past 2
years with PowerSDR,
I cannot move to anything that does not have it. The information that you can
get off a waterfall
display with 45 second history cannot be overstated. I don't want to look at a
display, that only
shows rows upon rows of "slices" - that I would never use….and nothing else. I
also don't want to
have to push a second function key, and scroll down a list to select basic
things like mode, drive,
volume, mic gain etc etc . These should be right on the display, as is the case
with PowerSDR

I am not the only one that is concerned about this - I have received a number
of emails from
fellow Flexers, that have either moved away from Flex, or that are planning to
move away,
due to there being nothing to replace the Flex-5000 with, that runs on PowerSDR.

So, where to from here ? Right now, I am looking at upgrading to a Kenwood
TS-990S. Others
have indicated moving to ANAN/Apache, or Elecraft with LP-Pan and PowerSDR.

Please understand, we are loyal Flexers, and would have continued buying Flex -
if there was an
upgrade to the Flex-5000 available….but we have no upgrade path where we can
remain with
PowerSDR, and so we are looking at other options.
However, I will keep my Flex-5000, it remains a good rig, and it runs on the
best software currently
available to SDR radio's. But, my next radio to experiment with, will be a
TS-990S, as I have no other
options at Flex.

Re: [Flexradio] [Flex radio] Newbie Follow-up

2013-05-18 Thread John Kramer
Bret

Let me first make it clear that I have been an avid fan of the Flex product -
don't believe me ? look at my QRZ.COM page. I have also converted more
than 20 people from conventional radio's to owning Flex radio's.

I flew halfway around the world to attend the Orlando hamvention in
February this year, one reason being so that I could see what all the fuss was
about
with the new Flex 6000 series radio's. Tim demonstrated smartSDR to me with the
6000 series radio in great detail. I am saying this so you know I am
not on a troll here, but I have seen the new radio in operation.

I prefer the PowerSDR concept radio's. I would have liked it if Flex
built on from this model and enhanced it. There are a number of enhancements
that
I would have liked to have seen in the 5000, which I won't detail here.
I prefer this concept, where you can continually upgrade your computer
without having to change the radio. With the 6000 series the computer is built
into the
radio. Of course, in order for the Flex-5000/5500 to keep up with faster
computers, the enhanced
5500 would need better data transfer than firewire 400. I would like to see a
5500 come
out with support for Firewire 800 and also Thunderbolt (12 times faster).

This is a personal preference. I cannot ever see the need for 4 or 8 or 100
slices
of the spectrum. The most I will ever use is 2. I know that smartSDR is in its
infancy,
but I hate the GUI. No waterfall ? The waterfall was one thing that sold me on
Flex
products - I don't want my display to be clogged up with "slices" that I
wouldn't use. I would
prefer to have my display showing the slice I am on in GREAT detail with
waterfall aka PowerSDR.
$ 200.00 a year to subscribe to SmartSDR….really ?

I was not saying they should continue producing the 5000 forever. I never said
that.
What I am saying is that they should continue enhancing that PowerSDR concept.
ie. a Flex-5500. I don't like the SmartSDR concept. I hate the GUI. I prefer
having all
the buttons I need on the display - mode change, volume change, band change etc
etc.

I am also NOT saying that the 6000 series is a bad idea - clearly there are
lots of
customers waiting to purchase it. All I wanted to see, was for the PowerSDR
hardware
to continue being enhanced

Because it appears that the hardware for PowerSDR will not be enhanced….I will
be moving
onto the Kenwood TS-990S. But I will still keep my Flex-5000, nice radio….maybe
sell
my Flex-3000 and Flex-1500.

Re: [Flexradio] [Flex radio] Newbie Follow-up

2013-05-18 Thread John Kramer
In my opinion this is a seriously bad move by Flex, if it is true. Not everyone
is interested in the 6000 series.
I love my Flex-5000, Flex-3000 and Flex-1500, but if they are going to receive
little or no support due to
the 6000 getting the limelight, then my next move will NOT be to the Flex-6000

[Flexradio] For Sale: Flex 5000A with all options

2013-04-27 Thread John Ackermann
I'm selling my 5000A with RX2, ATU, and V/U modules. It's in excellent
condition and has had little use (due to lack of antennas for most of
the time I've owned it...). While I love the radio, I've decided to
focus on building out my HPSDR system.

I haven't found many sale prices for 5000As with all three options, so
am willing to consider offers. I'm giving the list a head start, and if
it's not sold will list on eBay at the end of the weekend.

If you're interested, please contact me off-list at j...@febo.com

I would like to see if in USB (SSB) mode the VAC is effected by settings

For EasyPal I want the DXexpender in the chain for voice, but out of the

Up till now I have been switching to DIGU for when RX/TX for pictures.

A picture showing were the VAC ties in together with the audio

Re: [Flexradio] CW truncated/missing dits

Peter - I know this doesn't help you, but I am running the identical computer -
the very latest MacMini
2.7 quad core, which I bought during a recent trip to Orlando FL. I use it with
both a Flex-5000 and
a Flex-3000. Man, it really runs well…..I would say the perfect computer to use
with your Flex radio.
I have Windows 7 running under bootcamp, and am an 80 % CW user. Speed stays at
between 27 - 30
wpm. CW has been really good, no complaints at all with my setup. There is no
latency noticeable
at all with my setup, nor any shortened characters

Re: [Flexradio] Win7-64 Rosewill RC-304 install

2013-03-16 Thread John Vandenberg
Been using the card successfully with DDUtils under Win7-64. I had to
do a reinstall of Win7 and having problems to get the parallel port to work.

I tried the vista drivers and the Win7 (from Rosewill) and both give
me the same results. The problem seems to be related to a missing
Microsoft PCI Multi-IO Controller driver. On the new install it shows
up as fl;agged Unkown driver in and on the device manager. On the old
system it showed as Microsoft drivers:

This is my Flex-3000 This is an example of the distortion I can not get rid

of after owning it for just under a month. I bought this from Flex.

You are listening to a Electro Voice RE20 plugged directly into the mic

jack on the Flex. I can plug any of my mic's into the Flex, and use their

respective TX profiles. And I get the same result

The first phrase is into a dummy load with 3 watts. The second phrase is

into my dipole with 100 watts. The receiver is a Kenwood TS-950S. I set the

audio chain up with W1AEX's excellent information from his web page.

I think the most important thing to remember in the Rb vs GPSDO

debate is that without some other standard like a GPSDO or better to

compare to or calibrate against, you never know that your Rb

oscillator is actually on-freq. The LPRO-101 has an adjustment to

vary its freq. How would I know that adjustment pot didn't get

jostled during shipment? Lastly, since we know the early Rb units

were subject to failure due to aging of the Rb tube, how would I know

the one I was considering has much life remaining ?

Bottom line - I would HAVE to be able to check/calibrate it, but

against what primary reference?

Without a GPSDO to compare the Rb to, I think buying a Rb one would

be a crap-shoot. After thinking it through, I skipped the Rb step

and went straight to the GPSDO.

[Flexradio] Automatic antenna selection & amp keying with the Flex 5000

2013-01-22 Thread John Swink
I have a Flex 5000 + RX2 + ATU + VU and am using four 4-position manual coax
switches to select from 13 antennas covering 160 meters to 70 centimeters.
I would like to replace these manual switches with some electrically
operated switches that will allow selection of the proper antenna and key
the required amp as the band is changed on the Flex.

The antenna form in PSDR does not have the capacity to handle the number of
combinations I require. I seem to recall that someone once made a board or
boards that in conjunction with Flexwire and DDUtil provided more options.

I have searched the Knowledge Center without success. Since the Flexradio
Wiki is not operating, I was unable to search it. Does anyone know if those
boards are still available, who supplied them and the instructions for
setting up and operating them? Thanks.

Re: [Flexradio] Using Flex-3000 with Bootcamp on Older Macs

2013-01-13 Thread John Kramer
I think the mac quad core is perfect for the Flex Randy. I am using a Flex
5000, 3000 and 1500.
When I run the 3000 and 5000 off my quad core i7 iMac, it is beautiful and
smooth, and runs
at around 12% CPU. However I want to use the iMac as my work/internet/email
computer.

So I keep my flex radios connected to my core 2 duo 2.4Ghz 2011 MacMini with
8GB RAM. While it has been
running sort of okay with this MacMini, the CPU varies anything from 45 % - 75
%, and I notice the odd
very short (milli second) audio drop, particularly if I use the computer for
other applications while the Flex
is in receive mode…like looking up a QRZ.COM detail.

I am leaving this week to go to the UK, and then on to Florida, USA to attend
the Orlando Hamfest. While
in the USA I will be ordering (Apple stores don't sell this configuration) 16
GB quad core i7 MacMini WITH
the new 1TB fusion drive - the fusion drive is part regular HD and part solid
state drive, to greatly speed up
disc access time. I will make it my Flex computer - I have no doubt it would
make the perfect Flex computer.

PowerSDR v2.5.3 contains several new enhancements and bug fixes. As with any
new release of PowerSDR v2.x it is highly recommended that you review the
PowerSDR v2.5.3 Release Notes before installing. If you are upgrading from
PowerSDR v2.3.5 and have not installed PowerSDR v2.4.4 which contained a new
Firewire driver, the Release Notes will provide important information regarding
the upgrade as there is a new Firewire driver and firmware that is not

While all the improvements and bug fixes are too numerous to detail, the
following is a list of major changes since the previous official release,

1.New FlexControl Basic and Advanced Operation Modes
2.Waterfall Low/High Levels now Stored by Band
3.New Keyboard Commands for Controlling the Drive setting
4.New Option to Disable Split on Mode Change
5.Default AGC-T Settings Refactored by Band for Better Signal to Noise

6.New FHM-1 (Flex Hand Microphone) TX Profiles
7.Changes for Windows 8 Compatibility
8.NR, ANF and Noise Blankers Automatically Disabled When Operating Digital

The recent discussion about logging programs got me thinking about computer
logging again. Many years ago I used LOGic 4 for logging contacts but quit
using it since I operated from two fixed locations and mobile and had a
computer at only one fixed location. I now have a computer that I can use
at all locations and am considering computer logging again.

LOGic is now at version 9. Has anyone had any experience using LOGic with
PowerSDR and what is your experience with it?

I need a logging program for general contacts, contesting, awards tracking
(HF/VUHF) and LOTW with tracking from each location I operate from. I have
been unable to locate anything on the internet that compares the features,
versatility and ease of use of other logging programs that are currently
available. Does anyone know if such a comparison exists or the pros and
cons of the existing logging software?

Thanks for your assistance.

Steve,

If your spurs and noise not from a power supply noise rf hash , I then do not
know the cause. I was just throwing out an idea to check.I can report that
these spurs and noise do not appear on the Flex 5K here with any type of
antenna connected or no antenna or dummy load.

Re: [Flexradio] PSDR generated broad noise on 21.076

2012-11-30 Thread John Sweeney
This could be from a noisy switching power supply. I had the kind of noise as
described and changing power supplies cleared it up. A good linear type power
supply may help. No such noise as described now, so not characteristic of a
Flex Radio.

Could even be noise from a close by wall wort supply, even picked up with the
dummy load.

A mismatched antenna will not cause noise on receive. By using a closer
matched antenna you are increasing the atmospheric noise and general signals to
cover up the possible power supply hash noise.

for a solution without success.

Help would be appreciated.

Re: [Flexradio] SDR-3000 Issue

2012-11-22 Thread John Kramer
Check out your firewire cable. I had one that started to get flakey on me with
my 3000. It would
disconnect after running fine for 5 or 10 minutes. It was only when I borrowed
my firewire cable from
my 5000 installation that I realised that the cable was the problem.

A few things, in no particular order

  - See if you can run the 3000 on another computer as this will help to
eliminate if the problem is the computer or not
  - Make sure the firewire cable is firmly seated on both ends
  - Look at the windows event logs and see if you can get a clue of what
  crashed first
  - Did anything else change
  - Try resetting the PSDR database ( you can make a copy of your old one)
  - Could it be RF related (you don't say if you were transmitting or not)
  - Fire up the DPC Lantency checker and see if you computer is busy
  - It may be your hard drive starting to fail and it is in constant
repair mode. This is hard to see as it happens without anything being
reported to windows. Only running Spinrite (www.grc.com) will help
  eliminate this

No, it is not. The 3000 is NOT a QRP rig at QRP levels. Just the idle
current on the 3000 in TX with no output at all is 5A from 13.8V.
Raise the output to 10W and the current is 10A at 13.8V.

what is the current drain at 100 watts on the flex 3000 ?

Mine draws 22A.

Re: [Flexradio] Cannot run 'Demo Mode'

2012-11-18 Thread John Vandenberg
We like to do a club demo without having the hardware there, just some
prerecorded stuff on a memory stick. The problem is the computer does
not give a demo option in 'Available Radio Interface". We also did the
update to PowerSDR2.4.4. but we have the same problem there.

Has this option be removed?
Is there a way to force it into "demo Mode"?
