RE: trouble adding extra line to master page header
The ruling line is most likely now behind the expanded header text frame. You can grab it by dragging a box around it - be sure you start outside the header text frame and do not completely enclose the header frame with the selection rectangle. Or, you can select the header frame and send it to the back via the graphics menu. You will then be able to simply click to select the line. Another possibility, although it does not seem as if this is the case from your description, is that the 'header' paragraph format has a frame below set to display the line. If that is the case, simple add your desired second line of information in the header and the line should reposition automatically. I find the latter case to be 'poor design' as this will result in an uneven appearance if you have some master pages with single-line headers and some with double-line headers. Well, 7-8 weeks is sort of in a grey area, I think. Adobe and most other vendors that I'm familiar with will give you at least a 30-day window; Adobe sometimes extends the window beyond that. However, I disagree that we all knew that Adobe knew when the Suite was shipping; if they actually had, they probably would have announced it when they shipped FM 8 in order to make a bigger splash. Possible Frame6+SGML Issue only MIF to Native and OLE graphics
I have a process in which I run both Frame 6 and 7 documents through an automated build. One step in this effort is to save all the files to MIF and do some string replacements on the file, then save that result back to Native form so I can print the documents. Note that is this case no substitutions were made, so it is just a round tripping of the files from MIF to Native As these files are saved back to Native (via FrameScript) I'm getting the following error/warning from Frame: SnagIt.jpg This has occurred on 4 different books, not sure if they have been all Frame 6 or not, but this last one is 6. One of the books we couldn't track the problem down and had to rebuild it. The other 3 seem to all be related to embedded OLE graphics. Select None for the Frame Below the first paragraph line. The trouble with this solution is that you have now removed the line from every other header that has just one line. If you apply the change only to the current instance to avoid that, you have an override, which will disappear if the formats are updated from a template. This isn't good practice. Another way for the OP to handle this problem is to keep the header one paragraph, but add a second line to it using Shift-Enter. Then the blue line will remain below the second text line, and no changes to the format are required. HTH! -- Jeremy H. Griffith, at Omni Systems Inc. Is there some known problem with OLE embedded graphics or an issue with saving from MIF back to Native? There shouldn't be. OLE objects are preserved in MIF just as any other imported graphics are. However, since they are embedded, and not referenced, they are subject to the same troubles as other embedded graphics, which includ potential loss of data if there's inadequate disk space for the temporary files Frame generates when saving them. Check your Windows system environment variables for the TMP and TEMP directories, and make sure the drive referenced in them is not close to full. Aside from that, one cross-check you could try is to use Wash via MIF, which is a File-menu item added by the Mif2Go plugin. It works fine for both books and individual files in the demo version, which is free: http://www.omsys.com/dcl/download.htm You only need to install the plugin files, m2rbook.dll and m2gframe.dll. Wash works by saving as MIF, then reloading the MIF and saving as Frame binary. If you don't see the same problem there, you may want to check the FrameScript code to see what options you are using for the saves to MIF and to Frame binary. I don't know of a particular one that would have that effect, but it's not impossible... HTH! -- Jeremy H. Griffith, at Omni Systems Inc. Re: Translation
Hi Harold, I sure can. I have been managing localization since 1995. I've answered your questions and amd sending you (direct to your email address) a 24 page book I wrote that tells you about everything you will need to know to get started. It's called Localization and FrameMaker and was originally a presentation I made at the FrameUsers conference in November 2000 in San Diego. After reading the booklet, feel free to write and ask questions. BTW, you will probably get a lot of responses on the FM list that say Use my translation vendor. Don't! Recommendations are nice but you need to screen and hire a localization vendor exactly the same way you would screen and hire a tech writer. The vendor has to be right for the job you have. They must understand the technology of your business to translate accurately. They need to know and understand the terminology. But that is all explained in detail in the book. See more below. Diane Gaskill Hitachi Data Systems = -Original Message- From: Harold Winberg [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Nov 6, 2007 6:05 AM To: framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: Translation Hello Framers: Can anyone tell me about translation? I am currently interested in translating technical manuals and parts lists that are in Frame 7.2 from English to Arabic and French. DG: First, the correct word is localization, abbreviated L10N (L + 10 letters + N) It's is way more than just translation. It takes things like date formats, money types, and a dozen other things into account. The book contains a detailed explanation. I have a few questions: How would this normally be done? e DG: It is normally done by an LSP - Localization Service Provider. LSP is the localization industry name for localization vendor. Would it be done in a separate program and then put into Frame? DG: Well, sort of. The LSP converts the FM file to MIF. Then the linguist uses a software application called the Translator's Workbench (or other similar tool) to translate the file. Then they put the translated MIF back into FM, clean it up, and send it to you. Note that that information is _very_ basic. There is actually a lot more to it than that. But if you meant that you take your file and run it through a translation program and put it back in FM, Absolutely Not. You cannot use a computer to accurately translate technical information. A human translator (called a linguist) is required to do it accurately. Some linguists do use CAT (computer assisted translation) but they always check the translations themselves to make sure it is correct. And then a second linguist checks the work of the first linguist. Anyone who tells you that machine translation by itself is OK does not know what they are talking about. What is the best SW translation program? Can you customize it? DG: There are several CAT programs, and some are trainable, that is, you can teach it your terminology, but that is not good enough. SERIOUSLY - Do Not attampt to translate techdocs with a computer alone. You will get a lot of garbage and your customers will not be happy. Are there electronic technical dictionaries out there? DG: Sure. Wikipedia and several others. There are also free online translation programs like Alta Vista, BabelFish and more, but remember, you get what you pay for. How is cost normally calculated? - per word, project etc?? DG: Combination of several things, including: per source doc word, depending on the target language. per page for DTP (desktop publishing to clean up the FM file after translation. per item for graphics translation. Several other things. Too many to explain here. See the book. It explains it in detail AND gives you prices. What are some good companies for this?? Several are listed in the back of the book. You can google any of the following terms and get a big list of them. translation localization internationalization globalization translation vendor localization service provider BTW, every vendor will tell you that they can do the job for you but I guarantee that not all of them can. The book has a list of 20 questions for screening vendors. I've long since lost count of how many Framers have the book. Maybe 2 or 3 thousand. (One of these days I need to update the book and maybe even charge a nickel for it. :-) Hope this helps. It's generally not a great idea to cross-post to a bunch of lists as you did, because it means that many people who respond will get annoying junk messages from the lists to which they don't belong. But the suite versions of FrameMaker and RoboHelp have additional features not included in the standalone versions. Those features make single-sourcing with FM and RH possible; you can't do that with the standalone programs. Richard -- Richard G. Upgrade Anger to Tech Comm Suite.
If you want the FM integration with RH, you have to buy the suite. You don't get it without the suite. So, there's that angle to consider as well. On 11/6/07, Kenneth C. Hello Framers: Can anyone tell me about translation? I am currently interested in translating technical manuals and parts lists that are in Frame 7.2 from English to Arabic and French. I have a few questions: How would this normally be done? Would it be done in a separate program and then put into Frame? What is the best SW translation program? Can you customize it? Are there electronic technical dictionaries out there? How is cost normally calculated? - per word, project etc?? What are some good companies for this?? trouble adding extra line to master page header
Hi David, That blue line is included with the header paragraph, via the paragraph designer Advanced tab, in the "Frame Below" drop-down. That setting grabs a frame containing the blue line from your reference page. To add another line of text to the header, create a new "second header line" paragraph style and add your blue line to the "Frame Below" that paragraph. Select "None" for the "Frame Below" the first paragraph line. s
Note that is this case no substitutions were made, so it is just a round tripping of the files from MIF to Native As these files are saved back to Native (via FrameScript) I'm getting the following error/warning from Frame: <> This has occurred on 4 different books, not sure if they have been all Frame 6 or not, but this last one is 6. One of the books we couldn't track the problem down and had to rebuild it. The other 3 seem to all be related to embedded OLE graphics. Is there some known problem with OLE embedded graphics or an issue with saving from MIF back to Native? ..dan *** Dan Vint Engineer Sr. BEA Systems Home: 510-522-4703 (generally working from home) Office: 408-570-8554 IM Yahoo: dvint1_99 dvint at bea.com Notice: This email message, together with any attachments, may contain information of BEA Systems, Inc., its subsidiaries and affiliated entities, that may be confidential, proprietary, copyrighted and/or legally privileged, and is intended solely for the use of the individual or entity named in this message. Select "None" for the "Frame Below" the first paragraph line. Griffith, at Omni Systems Inc. http://www.omsys.com/

Is there some known problem with OLE >embedded graphics or an issue with saving from MIF back to Native? There shouldn't be. OLE objects are preserved in MIF just as any other imported graphics are. However, since they are embedded, and not referenced, they are subject to the same troubles as other embedded graphics, which includ potential loss of data if there's inadequate disk space for the temporary files Frame generates when saving them. Check your Windows system environment variables for the TMP and TEMP directories, and make sure the drive referenced in them is not close to full. Aside from that, one cross-check you could try is to use "Wash via MIF", which is a File-menu item added by the Mif2Go plugin. Griffith, at Omni Systems Inc. http://www.omsys.com/

BTW, you will probably get a lot of responses on the FM list that say "Use my translation vendor." Don't! It takes things like > date formats, money types, and a dozen other things into account. The book > contains a detailed explanation. > >I have a few questions: >> > >How would this normally be done? e DG: It is normally done by an LSP - Localization Service Provider. A human translator (called a "linguist") is required to do it accurately. There are also "free" online translation programs like Alta Vista, BabelFish and more, but remember, you get what you pay for. Diane === > >Les Winberg
