FM abruptly closes with no save

2008-02-12 Thread Wilk, Susan
I have been experiencing the same problem as Christopher. I am running
FrameMaker 7.1 on Windows XP. (And Christopher, I am not a newbie--I
have been using Fm for well over 10 years.)

The last time FM crashed in this way, I had just imported an image
(gif), reduced the size, and was adjusting the frame with the bottom
center handle.

I've been learning FM in the middle of a project, and it sometimes seems
a bit ornery. I'm inserting graphics linked from a Powerpoint file.
First I do Special > Anchored Frame, and set "Top of column". Then I
paste the graphic into the frame. Twice today, after I have done this
process 5 or 10 times, I perform the first step and suddenly FM closes
without saving. Since contemporary software usually includes a Newbie
Detector Module to make things more exciting for the beginner, maybe
someone could suggest a way to make myself less obvious to the NDM.
Thanks.

Track Changes Added inconsistencies?

2008-02-12 Thread Art Campbell
Brad,

It amounts to the same thing as using conditional text and having
different show/hide indicators for the different files in the book.
Track Changes uses different tracking modes, and somehow, one or more
of the settings were activated for one or more of your book files.

You can probably clean it up either with the Track Changes bar, as
Gillian mentioned, or (I think) by editing the conditional text
settings.

Cheers,
Art

The past several times that I've regenerated my FrameMaker 8.0 book

What does this mean? I've never seen a track changing feature, nor have

Should I be concerned about this? Will this mess up my book if I try to

Well, I haven't seen FM8, but the message "Show/Hide setting for XYZ is
inconsistent" means you're showing text tagged with the condition XYZ in
some book components and not in others.

If FM8 is creating change-tracking conditions and applying them to text,
and you don't know anything about it, I suspect it's time to RTFM. ;-)

Limiting table/graphics table widths

2008-02-12 Thread Art Campbell
Loretta,
There are two default widths -- the column width or the page text frame width.
If you wanted to specify a width in mm, points, or another measure, it
would probably require scripting.

Limiting table/graphics table widths

2008-02-12 Thread Grant Hogarth
Perhaps I'm missing something, but are your tables not ID tagged?
This can set the width.
Then you just have to train your writers not to resize the table (a
challenge, I realize).

Another option might be to use a FrameScript to call the Resize Columns
control -- which does have a "Scaling to width totaling " command.

Thanks Rick, Art,

It looks like a great utility that I think will work after our
translators have put our text into their smaller page formats.

But it didn't look like you can set a max table size with the utility,
can you?

I was hoping to find a way to restrict table sizes on our side -- either
some automated way to limit the max width of each table format or some
visual cue to let our writers know this is the limit for this table.

This would allow us to control the table issue on our side and limit the
$$ translators charge for dealing. Know what I mean?

If anyone has any ideas, let me know.

In any case, thanks!

Hello fellow Frame users,

The past several times that I've regenerated my FrameMaker 8.0 book
(originally created in 7.2) I've gotten the following message:

"Show/Hide setting for FM8_TRACK_CHANGES_ADDED is inconsistent"

What does this mean? I've never seen a track changing feature, nor have
I (knowingly) turned one on or off.

Should I be concerned about this? Will this mess up my book if I try to
print it?

RE: Limiting table/graphics table widths

Linda,

I would use Bruce Foster's Archive tool for this task. It will copy
all referenced insets into a new folder and change the reference
pointers for you. It will also copy referenced graphics into a separate
folder in the same way. If its default folder structure doesn't suit,
you can simply move the folder to your preferred location, and when you
open the FM files again, tell Frame to look in the new location for all
files.

The plug-in is only $25, and well worth it.

Of course! Thanks for that, Grant. I'll definitely do it that way next
time.

Now, a related question. Normally I'd post this to the HATT list but
since
Adobe also makes Robo, I thought it might be okay to post the question
to
this list.

What is the best way to do a wordcount of an HTML help system? I used
the
single source method and converted my help system to a Word doc, but it
took
a while and I don't know how accurate the conversion is.

Thanks,
Diane

Quick workaround for that
Build a book that has only the content files, (No TOC or Index).

Bookinfo works great, I use it myself. But one word of caution. If you
are
counting the words in a book for localization purposes, be sure to
substract
the number of words in the TOC and index. These files are not counted
because they are generated from words and phrases (titles, for example)
that
are would already be translated when the vendor generates the TOC and
index
for the translated book.

Unwanted page borders via the .ps /Distiller route

2008-02-12 Thread Rob Shell
Dear Framers:
another embarrassing question from an ever hopeful lurker. I am using
FrameMaker 7.2 build p152 on an XP SE platform.

I am having some problem producing a .pdf without a border if I use the
print to file .ps option and the Distiller which this list recommends.

If I use the verboten "save as .pdf" I get the pdf without a border as it
should be. But I cannot print the book via .ps and then Distiller without
the border. I know the solution should be in the Printer preferences,
properties, options, etc, but there I get conflicting measurements of what
an A4 page is. viz. 8.5 x 11.00. What overrides what and where do I start?

A further bit of ignorance, I would like to print to a .pdf screen size, NOT
A4 landscape, but there is no (screen) option as there is in the last
PageMaker version I used. Must I go "custom"

Thanks guys

Re: Limiting table/graphics table widths

Loretta,
There are two default widths -- the column width or the page text frame width.
If you wanted to specify a width in mm, points, or another measure, it
would probably require scripting.

Limiting table/graphics table widths

2008-02-12 Thread Chen, Loretta
Thanks Rick, Art,

It looks like a great utility that I think will work after our
translators have put our text into their smaller page formats.

But it didn't look like you can set a max table size with the utility,
can you?

I was hoping to find a way to restrict table sizes on our side -- either
some automated way to limit the max width of each table format or some
visual cue to let our writers know this is the limit for this table.

This would allow us to control the table issue on our side and limit the
$$ translators charge for dealing. Know what I mean?

If anyone has any ideas, let me know.

In any case, thanks!

L.

RE: How do you count the total number of words in a FM book

2008-02-12 Thread Diane Gaskill
Of course! Thanks for that, Grant. I'll definitely do it that way next
time.

Now, a related question. Normally I'd post this to the HATT list but since
Adobe also makes Robo, I thought it might be okay to post the question to
this list.

What is the best way to do a wordcount of an HTML help system? I used the
single source method and converted my help system to a Word doc, but it took
a while and I don't know how accurate the conversion is.

Thanks,

Hi Esar,

You can do that with the BookInfo plugin:

Re: Archive searching and moving text inset files

2008-02-12 Thread Linda G. Gallagher
Ah, I didn't realize it did that. that could work really well, but I can't seem
to find a link to the plugin that works. I've tried from Leximation as well as
Carmen and a couple of other links I found using Google, but all come up with a
bad page.

Anyone have a working link to Bruce Foster's archive plugin?

If Rick hadn't volunteered the info, I would have recommended TableCleaner.
Works fine. And he could probably rig up a script to run it

I have used UltraEdit for years now and strongly endorse it. It not
only handles humongous files and has many useful text manipulation
features, but it also has a "hex" mode so that you can edit any

But thanks for the mentioning the font. I got the above link from an

About the Minion Pro, I don't know if this is of any help but here is

When we first moved from Word to Frame, I had several writers who kept
moving or renaming their inset folders. So I had lots of practice
editing MIF files to change inset paths. It was really pretty easy--much
easier and less time consuming than re-importing.

It's been a while, so I don't remember the exact syntax for the paths.
But I do remember that I found details in one of the Frame help PDF
files. (I assume it was the MIF one.)

Thanks guys
