RE: What FM plugin suite give the most bang?

2015-04-24 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi John,

I use two plugins/FrameScript packages very often:

i-frame
i-frame is a collection of scripts for FrameScript. The modules
encompass scripts for everything! I like these scripts best:
Scale Graphics - for me invaluable!
FM2MIF2FM - Convert to/from MIF
There are many more to get reports and to maintain formats.
I can only recommend to have a look at the web-site.
http://www.i-frame.itl.info/en/feature-description.html

Import formats special
This plugin adds some more options to the Import Formats dialog.
Specifically: User variables
This is a plugin which I need very often.
It's from Rick Quatro, but I couldn't find it on his homepage.

Best regards

Winfried

Thanks, John, but this is a one-shot deal.

First, I'd never get a scripting product in here. The applications have to
have specific functions they can test before installing.

Second, if I was to use someone like Rick, it would be a 4 month process
for each one I tried to get.

I cannot install anything. It has to be done by the right department.

I'd look into FrameScript. There are many useful free scripts available,
and you can write your own or contract someone to write them for you. I
highly recommend Rick Quatro, whose wizardry has dramatically expanded
 what
I can do with unstructured FrameMaker 12.

Two examples of easy, effective cleanup:
 * ArchiveFM.fso does pretty much what the late Bruce Foster's Archive
plugin did - it takes all the files, images, and text insets in a book,
even those referenced from distant folders, and puts them in a ZIP archive.
In seconds you can blow away all those extra images that aren't used in a
 book.
 * TidyImport.fso enable you to clean up a doc with too many extra para and
character tags by doing a CleanImport from a known good clean template or
chapter. Not just those, but Para, Char, Table, Variable, x-ref,
conditions, color defs, math defs, doc properties, object styles, reference
 pages and page layouts.

FrameScript is $179 for a single license. See https://framescript.com/

Comparing paragraph and character formats inside files of a book?

2015-04-24 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Hi, all.

I did a bit of looking and am not sure I see an answer for a concern that I
have.

In one of my books that I created and have edited over the years, it is
possible that some of the paragraph and character format definitions (and
possibly the color definitions, and reference pages too) are no longer
consistent in every file of that book.

Meaning that I am not sure if paragraph format “XYZ” in one of the files is
necessarily identical to the same format “XYZ” in another one of the files.
Probably close, but not sure if they are identical. It is also possible that
some file may have had a format added/removed/edited because it is only used
within that file only (like a content list format or something).

Is there a way to compare/list/report (whatever) all the formats in the files
to see where the inconsistencies are? At least, so that I can take one of the
file and apply its formats to all the other files and not break things too much?

Hi John,

As you know, I am a big fan of scripting. FrameMaker 11 has ExtendScript
built in, so one clandestine way of adding productivity to FrameMaker
without plugins is to learn to write some scripts. ExtendScript is basically
Adobe's version of JavaScript on top of FrameMaker's object model. If you
don't want to write them yourself, you can purchase them from others. And
because scripts are compiled at runtime, you usually get the source code so
you can reuse parts and pieces in your own scripts. Your learning will make
things a longer term effort, but it sounds like your procurement process
takes time anyway, so you may as well be adding to your skill set as you
learn.

I am doing an Adobe Webinar next Wednesday on ExtendScript in FrameMaker. If
you have a particular task in mind and attend the webinar, I will make sure
you get the script at no cost, or in exchange for a small donation to the
Roswell Cancer Center in Buffalo. I welcome some good ideas for scripts that
I can demonstrate. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.
Thank you very much.

RE: What FM plugin suite give the most bang?

2015-04-24 Thread john . x . posada
Hi, David. I watched their video. They seem to stress linguistics and
usability, and measuring that stuff.

While those are secondary factors on my end, my priority is style, format,
content control consistency, and authoring speed. It's hard to explain, but
my stuff isn't to convince...my stuff is to show AML methodology and
compliance for use during AML model review.

I have one main output; PDF, with secondary output Word. Multiple delivery
isn't a requirement here.

Thanks anyway.

I would give serious thought to Acrolinx, if you're facing consistency
issue as your content scales up and if you're going to bring in multiple
writers. It can also help other casual content authors (e.g., developer's
and tester's design and use case docs; marcomm) or give you a fast-editing
path to clean up such source prior to importation/reuse in FrameMaker. It's
NOT cheap, and it take a significant setup and routine maintenance as your
product lines evolve... but it's a joy to see working well! It basically
can eliminate any 'copyediting' roles throughout your organization.

And, no, I am not affiliatedf with them, other than as a fanboy who wants
MY compnay to adopt it! :)

Hi, guys...I'm using FM11 unstructured and I maintain quite a large
document set...10 books of 2,000 pages each give or take.

Because of the amount of time I spend on housekeeping, I'm ready to take a
stab at adding plugins that will save me time. In addition, I may be
bringing in a team of 3-4 writers and I want the files to be as clean as
possible. When you evolve to 20,000 pages of document from an initial 195
pages in 2 years, ya get careless at times.

Re: realistic expectations in Pune, India

2015-04-24 Thread hessiansx4
Good luck! I believe your best bet would be to find an American tech writer
living in Pune, or hire someone in Boston. Plenty of companies parse out tech
writing jobs to off-site writers. If you're concerned about quality, imo, your
US-based team needs to do at least a copy edit!

the things that aggravate writers, making last-minute changes and expecting a
quick search-and-replace, not reviewing docs, etc. The person has to be able
to essentially finish and publish the doc to US standards. My team does not
have the time to edit the work from India. The writer must know the proper use
of articles and placement of commas.
So I am looking for a veteran with good grammar and 10+ years of experience

back on a team. I can say all sorts of empowering things from Boston, but if
the writer doesn't feel it in his/her heart, doesn't have the courage and the
chutzpah to stand up to the team to ensure doc quality, then I have the wrong
person and I get stuck with poor-quality documentation.

Am I looking for a chimera? There are plenty of writers like that in the Boston

Experience won't be an issue; quality may be. We'd hired technical writers
in Pune as far back as 2001. We don't have writers there anymore. We found
people who had a good attitude and were interested in our software, but
their writing wasn't clean. Grammar was a real issue. I was surprised,
because I had grown up in India and had moved to the US only in my late
20s. However, things may have improved. We haven't done any interviews in
the last five years.

Re: Comparing paragraph and character formats inside files of a book?

Hi, all.

I did a bit of looking and am not sure I see an answer for a concern
that I have.

In one of my books that I created and have edited over the years, it
is possible that some of the paragraph and character format
definitions (and possibly the color definitions, and reference pages
too) are no longer consistent in /every/ file of that book.

Meaning that I am not sure if paragraph format “XYZ” in one of the
files is necessarily identical to the same format “XYZ” in another one
of the files. Probably close, but not sure if they are identical. It
is also possible that some file may have had a format
added/removed/edited because it is only used within that file only
(like a content list format or something).

Is there a way to compare/list/report (whatever) all the formats in
the files to see where the inconsistencies are? At least, so that I
can take one of the file and apply its formats to all the other files
and not break things too much?

Silicon Prairie's paragraph and character tools will produce the reports
you ask about. With a little manipulation, you should be able to use FM
or Acrobat to compare files to find any differences in definitions.

Re: Comparing paragraph and character formats inside files of a book?

2015-04-24 Thread David Spreadbury
You can always save the files, or the suspect files, out as MIF and then
compare them using a text editor; i.e., Notepad++ or TextPad. That will display
any differences.

Hi, all.    I did a bit of looking and am not sure I see an answer for a
concern that I have.    In one of my books that I created and have edited over
the years, it is possible that some of the paragraph and character format
definitions (and possibly the color definitions, and reference pages too) are
no longer consistent in every file of that book.    Meaning that I am not sure
if paragraph format “XYZ” in one of the files is necessarily identical to the
same format “XYZ” in another one of the files. Probably close, but not sure if
they are identical. It is also possible that some file may have had a format
added/removed/edited because it is only used within that file only (like a
content list format or something).    Is there a way to compare/list/report
(whatever) all the formats in the files to see where the inconsistencies are?
At least, so that I can take one of the file and apply its formats to all the
other files and not break things too much?

Silicon Prairie's paragraph and character tools will produce the reports you
ask about. With a little manipulation, you should be able to use FM or Acrobat
to compare files to find any differences in definitions.

Re: realistic expectations in Pune, India

2015-04-24 Thread Gyanesh Talwar
John,

I have worked in Pune for 4 years. You can definitely find the person you
are looking for in Pune.

Tech Writing in India is a little new for the Devs\QEs. The good thing is,
you already know the challenges the Pune hire might face.

There are plenty of writers in Pune with 10+ years of experience and a lot
of them will be interested, because not may job openings require 10+ years
of experience. Most of the hiring, especially in Pune area, happens for 2-7
years of experience: someone who is not completely new but also will not
ask for a lot. Tech-Writers in India are more willing to shift cities
compared to writers in rest of the world. So your candidate can come from
Bangalore or Hyderabad also.

Not all of the candidates with 10+ years of experience, however, will meet
all your requirements.

- FM experience shouldn't be a problem - writers with a lot of companies in
India work with conditional text, variables, and text insets.
- API docs - depends on what kind of inputs you are going to give the
writer.
- Good grammar is not rare.

You may struggle to find a writer who autonomously does API documentation
and has excellent grammar. I haven't seen the two skills come as a package
often enough.

You may have to screen up to 15 or 20 people, but you definitely can find a
good writer.

Hope this helps..

-Gyanesh

Experience won't be an issue; quality may be. We'd hired technical writers
in Pune as far back as 2001. We don't have writers there anymore. We found
people who had a good attitude and were interested in our software, but
their writing wasn't clean. Grammar was a real issue. I was surprised,
because I had grown up in India and had moved to the US only in my late
20s. However, things may have improved. We haven't done any interviews in
 the last five years.

 Hi gang,
I have to hire a writer in Pune, India, but I wonder if I have
 unrealistic expectations.
We have a pretty sophisticated doc system in unstructured FrameMaker 12,
using variables, conditional text, text insets, etc.
We need API content as well as content for network administrators and
managed-service providers, SaaS, and business resiliency. Knowledge of data
 storage would be good.
The person will work independently, far from the home team in Boston. The
development team in Pune is a good team, but they do all the things that
aggravate writers, making last-minute changes and expecting a quick
 search-and-replace, not reviewing docs, etc.
The person has to be able to essentially finish and publish the doc to US
standards. My team does not have the time to edit the work from India. The
writer must know the proper use of articles and placement of commas.

So I am looking for a veteran with good grammar and 10+ years of
experience using all the parts of unstructured FM and with real-life
experience pushing back on a team. I can say all sorts of empowering things
from Boston, but if the writer doesn't feel it in his/her heart, doesn't
have the courage and the chutzpah to stand up to the team to ensure doc
quality, then I have the wrong person and I get stuck with poor-quality
 documentation.

Am I looking for a chimera? There are plenty of writers like that in the
Boston area, but I need one in Pune. I suspect that TechComm has been a
career in Boston a lot longer than it has in Pune...does anyone there even
 have ten years of experience?
