Re: [Framers] Contents of Framers digest... Why so many of us feel the way we do....

2021-10-20 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Dear Wim,

I do think Adobe reads this list, at least from time to time. So it is
IMNSHO essential that we discuss, not only the day-to-day problems we are
facing in our tasks with FM but also its pros and cons. I for one welcome
the discussion of the attitude that Adobe seems to show regarding
development, pricing, etc. of FrameMaker. I am of the view that Adobe is
(intentionally?) making it less of a competitor to InDesign by refusing to
add features that ID has and we have asked for to be added to FM. If they
did, and if they would enable you freely to add spell checker and
hyphenation for your language of choice, FM would be the absolutely best
tool for writing, editing, publishing any kind of literature. Then even I
would pay for upgrades. Until then I am not upgrading. I can do with older
versions quite easily.

Kind regards,
Bodvar Bjorgvinsson (retired)
Iceland.

Re: [Framers] ps file being used by another process

2021-09-10 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Hi Reng,

Thanks for replying so soon.

When you use Save as PDF, do you use FrameMaker's internal
> PDF engine? Or Distiller?
>
Started by save as pdf which uses FM's internal pdf engine.
Then I printed to file (first finding out that Adobe PDF was not my default
printer and then changing that).

> Do you get these messages also with other files or only with this book?
> Are these files on a network?

I only tried this file. And, yes, on Dropbox, but it has not been a problem
earlier.

As a short help I would copy all files of the book to another folder

(best locally) and create the PDF there.

When you get these messages, it sounds, as if FrameMaker has not
> completed the PS creation.
>
After changing to Adobe PDF it completes the ps (file size as expected).
When either double clicking the file or opening it from within Distiller I
get these messages.

> Or possibly something with your anti-virus software?

No change in that for a long time. If it is just at all these moments
checking the file, oit would surprise me! (Acronis True Image 2021 — and it
is not set to back up my Dropbox files).

Did you restart Windows?

No.

> Do others have access to these files?

No. And I have by default the admin rights, except in rare cases.

[Framers] ps file being used by another process

2021-09-10 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Hi Framers,

I am suddenly stuck with a new problem. When trying to print an fm file to
ps and then distilling it I either get the message "Cannot open this file.
The file is being used by another process."
Even if I close Framemaker I still get this message.
Also, if I try to open the ps file in Distiller, I get the message that I
don't have the permission to open the file. And when trying to change the
ownership of the file, I just get another similar message and the file
disappears.
Save as pdf gives the same kind of error messages.
And Adobe PDF is my default printer.
What could be wrong?

I'm on a deadline, so any help soon would be appreciated.
Earlier today I had no problem pdf-ing from Affinity Publisher.

Kind regards,
Bodvar Bjorgvinsson

My first book cover in Affinity Publisher went like a dream. Affinity ver.
1.10 is also much faster than earlier versions.
Also, FM2015 on my new PC loads referenced pictures much faster than my old

Re: [Framers] FM 10 on a new computer.

2021-08-11 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Thanks for all the replies.

I can see that more people than me are having a problem of this kind.

Actually, on my old laptop I have FM2015, which I love, but am not able to
use on my new desktop (all references missing), so FM 10 will have to do.
I will have a lot of work to do to change my numerous 2015 files to older
version in mif for the FM10.
I was lucky enough to get an offer for the Affinity suite at half price,
and now a free upgrade which allows for thousands of pages, a lot faster
start etc. I am not using it yet for any real work as I haven't had the
time to familiarize myself with it.

Affinity is said to read InDesign and other Adobe files except FM, but with
the tool from dptools it might work.

[Framers] FM 10 on a new computer.

2021-08-10 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Hello all you great people!

Sorry for the (Adobe) rant.

Due to my laptop's old age I found myself needing a new pc, a desktop this
time. All is well with everything but Adobe FM. I recently tried to install
my FM12 which I had lost any info about, and got a categorical No Go from
Adobe Support (contradiction in terms).

However I managed to install my FM 10, legally bought with CD and all (for
two computers but only one using it at a time) and got it set up and
working OK. Only, when I tried to use it again, I got a message that it
needs activation with Adobe. I ended up contacting Adobe online support who
finally sent me an update and everything went well—for the time being.

Now, some 10-15 days later I started FM10, only to find that it wanted
activation with Adobe and I had 15 days until it would not be working at
all. At first it said, no Internet. Then it said I was connected and I
tried and I got the message that I had no internet connection and would
have to try again (and some other variation and try again.

The recommended webpage is of little or no help.

So finally I contacted Adobe online support. It took them approx. 90
minutes to figure it out. The product was too old for their databases. I
gave the guy access to my PC and he started digging. Finally I had to
uninstall and reinstall the FM upon which he sent me some kind of update
(license key, probably) which he didn't manage to obey, and the same all
over again. Then I remembered the update (TCS3) which he installed and then
the other update and all went well. He told me he had given it a new
license key (serial number) registered to my name. I hope for the best! And
I really recommend those guys on the Adobe online support.

But I think I am permanently giving up on Adobe. Nowadays they seem only to
want your money. And a lot of it. Working now on probably my last FM
project.

Going for Affinity from now on, which seems fabulous software.

That's all for now.

Kind regards,
Bodvar

Re: [Framers] can someone take the reins?

2021-06-27 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Hi y'all!

I am long retired and only use FM for some minor jobs from time to time.
This list — I have no words to express how much it has meant to me and how
professionally so many Framers come to the help of other Framers — for
free. The list has solved so many problems for me and I only hope that I
may have contributed just a bit to help others.

In the late 90ies I learned Linux with a guy (John White) and there I came
into the community of people that looked at helping others with their
learning was as natural as drinking water.

This list is in the same category. The only difference is that we are
dealing with expensive software. In cases like that you often don't get any
help for free.

So my most sincere thanks to Carol and Rick and all the others that have
been the administrators of this list and all the others that have offered
their valuable help. I only hope that someone will release them and
continue maintaining the list. I am also thankful for all the acquaintances
I have made through this list and the courses and conferences I was so
fortunate to be able to attend. Some of them have become my Facebook
friends I hold dear.

Best wishes to everyone,
Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
Reykjavik, Iceland.

Re: [Framers] Help with setting up a paragraph tag in the TOC

2021-03-30 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Hi Steve,
Thanks and thanks for asking.

It was a great fun doing that job. I did three different layout versions
for different book sizes. Actually, it was the New Testament plus the
Psalms and the Proverbs, but it is the same amount of structured work.
However, I don't think there will be more upgrades for this since the Bible
is now available online and in audio as well, and this is what the young
people and the old ones who are losing eyesight want.

I have only been doing one or two small jobs a year now, and just now I am
doing a book of short stories (2-3 pages each, 80+ pages in all) which is
the product of a course some people are taking in Story writing techniques.
Just sent a first draft layout copy from the preliminary copy I was sent
today. Still waiting for the final copy. I am obliged to Lynne A. Price for
her suggestion regarding the TOC as I had to (well, actually, I wanted
to—not sure the buyer needs it!) merge three paragraph references into one
TOC Item. So, Lynne, if you are reading this, THANKS!

Brgds,
Bodvar

Ti Tammy,
Are you forgetting <$paranum> before <$paratext>?
Kind regards,

Re: [Framers] Oh for the Good Old Days

2020-10-29 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
I had to increase the settings for my displays to 120% so I could read
(with my glasses) my FM12. However this increase had some other effects on
FM12 which I just have to live with.
Everything nowadays seems to be made for the 20 years old with 2020
eyesight! Mustn't we, the seniors, go for a protest rally in Silicon Valley
and Redmond?
Otherwise I like the 12 a lot. Rocksolid. All my previoust versions have
crashed from time to time, but the 12 almost never.

Hope you find your solution.

Kindest of regards,
Bodvar

Re: [Framers] Cobol - Nostalgia - was Re: FrameMaker 2015

2020-04-13 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
COBOL seemed to me to be just the right thing for bookkeeping. I learned a
bit about it in the early 80s. One of my first programming experiences
(which I never had any use for). This and other attempts to programming
helped me enormously in understanding and creating EDDs.

Cheers.

Re: [Framers] HTML

You will never have the same fonts in HTML in every browser, even if you
stick to Arial. The thing in HTML is to set up alternatives in font use. I
don't know if it is possible in any automation in FM, but generally it is
set in the CSS.

You know, there is a slight difference between en-dash and the minus sign
(dash). The minus dash has a slight space (maybe half or whole thin space)
at each side of it.

Re: [Framers] Non-breaking en, em dashes

2018-07-05 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
You can also use the minus sign (Unicode8) U+2212. That works.
FM is not very handy at making it easy but you can add it using the Windows
Character Map or the FM Utilities > Hex Input.

My 2 bits.

Save as Word. My only guess is that this font is a bit more exaggerated
serif than the standard Times (etc.) and the font size was only 10 pt.
Also, it seemed to create a text frame on each page for the contents.

2018-04-17 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
I just tried to save a 200 page pdf to Word in Acrobat X Pro and almost all
word spaces disappeared (10pt/14 Esprit font), so I had just one very long
word for each line, more or less. Saving to rtf worked fine and I was able
to spellcheck my Icelandic (not supported by FM yet) document in
LibreOffice Writer, which, BTW, uses HunSpell, same as Adobe!

Just my dime.

Re: [Framers] Creating live transparency in PDFs using FrameMaker

2018-01-30 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
"Live transparency", in my view: fancy word for producing transparent
objects when printing to ps or "Save as" pdf. Does not work printing
directly to my HP OfficeJet Pro 8210. Maybe it can work if you have a
PostScript printer and know how to address its ps engine.
ID: Exactly, but then you have to "own" a copy of ID—which I don't. ;-)

Re: [Framers] "Secret" Freeze Pagination Feature

2017-04-26 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Stefan,

Thanks for this overview.

While working for Air Atlanta Icelandic I had some use for point pages when
working with certain manuals, technical manuals and you had some deletions
or additions of contents to print and send. Later, working with a different
type of manuals where the staff could not be trusted to insert such pages
correctly, or not at all, I went for total updates and reissues in pdf or
printed as books (bound in some way or another).

I agree that the need for it today is limited, but still I think it should
not be removed.

Kind regards,

[Framers] Adobe PhoneGap

2016-11-21 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Hi everyone,

Does anyone here have any knowledge of the Adobe PhoneGap and how to set it
up. I haven't seen any discussion on it here.

I was trying for the first time to publish to Mobile App where this
PhoneGap seems to be needed. The info is rather meager on how to set it up.
I downloaded the thing and and the app for my android phone and still I am
asked for credentials which I cannot find out how to get.

Respectfully,

[Framers] Zapf Dingbats and some other Type 1 fonts

2016-02-01 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
There is a weird behaviour in FM2015 (Windows10) regarding some Type1
fonts. For a time FM has been rendering them correctly but lately I have
experienced FM to suddenly and out of the blue stop showing the correct
font and substituting it for a different one, still maintaining that it is
the Zapf Dingbat (or other Type 1) font.

I have not been aware of any upgrades in FM, but I wonder whether upgrades
in Win10 have made any changes so that FM chooses to substitute the font
without warning. What I get instead of Zapf Dingbats is the reglular
Wingdings.

I have tried some tricks suggested in similar cases (not quite the same,
though) without luck.

Any comments?

 Hi,

My name is Denis Daly. I have recently started using FrameMaker.

I have had an odd issue today. I saved an individual chapter as a PDF and
about 40% of the images were not present. They are available in the
 'Graphics' folder.

I resaved and the same thing happened.

I then saved a third time but selected RGB instead of CYMK; all images
 were present.

I am using FM 12 with the recent update installed.

Can anyone explain this behaviour, please?

*Subject:* RE: My work-flow for dealing with backups from
 FrameMaker--getting rid of backups

I like having backups available in case of crashes or other emergencies,
so I don’t want to turn them off. As it’s also my habit to save different
“versions” of an active FrameMaker project in different folders, backups
are only required for those emergencies.

That makes a lot of clutter in the folder for my FM files, and there are
times I need to see my files without the clutter. Deleting or moving
backups is not easy if you have lots of files; you can reorder the files
any way you like but the backups stay glued to their parent FM files.

To get rid of the backups temporarily, I wrote an old-fashioned batch
(BAT) file that moves backup files to a folder on my C: drive (FM_Backup)
and then deletes the log file. It takes only a few seconds to run, and
leaves a pristine view of the FM files.

IMPORTANT: This only works when FrameMaker is closed because FM
automatically regenerates backup files as soon as you touch an open file.

The code I use is below. You can modify it to delete the files instead of
moving them, change the backup folder name, get rid of the log deletion,
 whatever you’d like.

 1. In Notepad or another text editor, copy the following lines:

 Move *.backup.fm C:\\FM_Backup

 Move *.backup.book C:\\FM_Backup

 pause

 Del *.log

 pause

 Exit

 2. Save the file as “FM_backup.bat” or any other name as long as it
 has a BAT extension.

 3. Create a backup folder on your C drive called “FM_Backup.”
You can name this folder anything as long as it matches the folder name in
 the BAT file.

 4. Copy or move the BAT file into the same folder as your working
 FrameMaker files.
IMPORTANT: You must insert a separate copy of the BAT file into every
folder that contains your FrameMaker files.

 5. To run, double-click “FM_backup.bat.”
The pauses stop the program to provide feedback as it moves the files.

 6. Don’t forget to delete the backup files when they are no longer
needed, as the backup folder gets bloated quickly.

I especially like using this when I save different “versions” of an
ongoing project. When I open a folder containing an earlier version, I only
 see the project files.

The code uses the simple DOS commands move, delete, pause, and exit. It
doesn’t save multiple versions of backups or work from any location except
where the FM files are stored, but you could get fancy if you’re inspired
to take this to another level.

Re: Best practices for converting FM to Robohelp

2014-09-05 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Hi Apurva,

Always set Explorer to show file extensions. It makes life so much easier
for Framers! :-)

Glad you solved your problem.

Brgds,

On Fri, Sep 5, 2014 at 9:49 AM, Apurva Bahadur apu...@writxt.com wrote:

 Fellow Framers,

Problem solved after some investigation, although I cannot understand the
 entire process.
 *Problem*

- While editing, I created the various FM files by renaming and saving
the complete file as the next file, deleting the existing stuff and editing
new content on the page.
- Somewhere in the process, one FM file got corrupted and ended with
the extension '.backup' instead of '.fm.'
- Due to 'save as' process, all the subsequent files had the '.backup'
extension.
- Even on corruption, these .backup extension files were visible in
the FM book. I could open, edit and create perfect pdf outputs of the FM
book.
- However, Robohelp refused to recognize the files with .backup
extension and made a CHM containing only the files with proper .fm
extension.
- This resulted in an incomplete CHM, and a growing sense of helpless
panic...

 *Solution*

- I opened the corrupted files from within FM book and saved them by a
different name. I checked in the Windows explored that the copy of the
files were saved with the proper .fm extension.
- I added the renamed files to the book and deleted the corrupted
files from the book. That was all to it.

I couldn't have solved this problem from within Framemaker itself as the
book showed the corrupted files as normal FM files - I would open edit and
save them without any indication of an error. So, when black magic starts
to happen, please check the extensions of files in Windows explorer!

Any idea why FM book could open a file with .backup extension? Probably
.backup are valid FM files, as these display a smaller version of the
Framemaker icon in the Windows explorer.

Re: Conditional cells in a straddled table row

2014-06-30 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Hi Samantha,

I fought with this several years ago and found that the only way to get the
results you want is to make the whole row conditional.

This could probably be done through a script if making the row conditional
is not a practical option.

For what it's worth,

Bodvar

 Hi all,

I wonder if any of you could help me.

I have a table with 3 columns and 5 rows. Columns 1 and 2 have all 5 rows

 column 3 contains conditional text:

*| Column 1 | Column 2 | Column 3*
 Row A | Cell 1A | Cell 2A |* Cell 3A*
 Row B |||* Cell 3B*
 Row C |||
 * Cell 3C*
 Row D |    ||* Cell 3D*
 Row E *||| Cell 3E*

I am unable to make all of Row E conditional as I've straddled Cell 1A,
and Cell 2A over it respectively. This means when I hide my conditional
text, Cell 3E, my table is left with an blank row.

Is there a way of getting around this?? I experimented with having Row E
unstraddled but I was unable to change the borders for that row. I may have
been looking in the wrong places!

In reality, this is a large table and I have this scenario repeated at
various points, so I would like to avoid changing the layout where
possible, but am resigned to the fact that I may have to.

Any help you can give would be appreciated.

 Thanks,
 Sam.

 http://wwwimages.adobe.com/www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/products/framemaker/pdf/FRAMEMAKER11_UPGRADE_GUIDE.PDF
Hunspell dictionary is available, as is Configurable dictionary
 support.
I guess these features mean that Adobe provides the dictionaries, and
you can select whether you want to want to use the HunSpell, or the
 Proximity version dictionaries.

I took a look at the InDesign help page:
 http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/add_cs_dictionaries.html
and so I created my is_IS folder in:
 C:\Program Files\Common
 Files\Adobe\Linguistics\6.2\Providers\Plugins2\AdobeHunspellPlugin\Dictionaries\
and in which I copied my is_IS.aff and is_IS.dic files.
I then added the stringis_IS/string text into the Spelling Service
 section of the Info.plist file.

 Is there anything I'm missing?
or ... *Does anyone know if it is possible to integrate new HunSpell
 dictionaries into FrameMaker11?*

FM12: SaveAs PDF not showing Dingbats in Ref pages

2014-02-02 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Hi all,
I always use print to file and distill from there. Today I was playing
with the new FM12 creating a small newsletter. There was one heading that
needed a dingbat above which I created, and it showed OK in FM12. But when
saving as PDF it just did not show in the pdf file. I tried this in several
ways but finally did as I always do and printed the fm to file and
distilled from there. Now the dingbat showed.

So, still the SaveAs PDF is buggy and not to rely on, it seems.

Best regards,
Bodvar

 As an FYI:

Some hyperlinks in FrameMaker documents do not seem to output with PDF
generators like Nitro PDF and a few others that I have tested so far. Most
are good in general though (of course, I am not sure why Nitro choked on
 your document!).

 ** **

Anyway, so far, my tests show only Adobe Acrobat doing the “right thing”
for the links, but I am planning on working with a company who makes a PDF
writer – they have expressed interest to add this support. So, if you have
links in your document, stick with Adobe Acrobat for now ...

P.S. Some LaTeX editors can create PDF with links. I particularly like
TeXstudio (from http://texstudio.sourceforge.net/). All my *new* specs
are now created as LaTeX files instead of FrameMaker, and this editor is
generating excellent PDF output for them.

I did not have Acrobat/Distiller on my system, so I had to install

I did try using Nitro PDF Pro 8, for which I have a full license, but it

just went with that, and it has worked out fine.

 Hi,

the main question is if you still have Acrobat and Distiller installed on
 your computer or not.

I also have this problem: FM does not recognize the Distiller, but it
nevertheless does in fact produce a ps-file, a .tps-file (which would
normally handed over automatically to Distiller).

I then just take this file and drag it on to the Distiller and have my PDF.

But if Acrobat has really vanished completely, you could use the FM 8
distiller plugin which is part of the FM installation DVD (maybe via the
repair option, I am not sure).

Or: You could install any other PDF printer like Tiny PDF, PDF24 or
whatever you like... Just check the Internet for something suitable.

 Best regards -

 Tino H. Haida

 VLM TechSubs:

Aack! I’m at the end of this project, and I went to Save As PDF. Frame 8
(Win 7 x64) reports that it cannot find the Adobe PDF printer driver. I
know what happened … I had someone “helping me”, and that person
“accidentally cleaned it up”. Needless to say, that person is no longer
 helping me! :)

Meanwhile … how can I get this driver back. Do I download a complete Frame
8 installation and install over the one I have? (I do have the S/N, of
course.) Or is there another, more direct solution?

 Thanks!

 Elchanan

Re: [FrameMaker ] Text skipping from right to left column

2013-09-30 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
This is not some fault, this only shows that you have set the columns to
balance (probably the default). Uncheck and the left column will fill
before anything is added to the right (or next) column, and then it will
stay filled.

Also notice that the balancing is also governed by the settings of the
settings of orphan/widow settings of the paragraphs.

Any havy graphics? Structured mode (returns less memory back, I

TIME URGENT ... Missing Adobe PDF printer driver

2013-09-30 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Seems to me you should do a partial reinstallation of your FM, installing
Distiller. Some other install of another pdf application might have damaged
it.

[FrameMaker ] Text skipping from right to left column

2013-09-30 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
This is not some fault, this only shows that you have set the columns to
balance (probably the default). Uncheck and the left column will fill
before anything is added to the right (or next) column, and then it will
stay filled.

Also notice that the balancing is also governed by the settings of the
settings of orphan/widow settings of the paragraphs.

[FrameMaker ] Text skipping from right to left column

2013-09-30 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Sorry, I didn't realize. (Slapping my mouth! No, fingers!) Never saw this
in my FM 7, 7.2 or 10.

Can this have anything to do with sloppy memory (not mine! the computer's)?
Any havy graphics? Structured mode (returns less memory back, I
understand)? I have seen the strangest things happen when the computer is
losing control of its memory.

Adobe PS driver vanished after Adobe failed Acrobat update

2013-09-16 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
A few days ago i accepted (once again!) Adobe's request for update on Adobe
Acrobat (or Reader) — security reasons, they said. And, as usual, while
downloading the message was that I could keep on with my work.

However, the installer gave up when trying to install the update and told
me it didn't have the rights, system being Windows 7.

I thought nothing more of it until now when I tried to print a FM10 file to
file, there was no option for it. I tried the Distiller on a ps file and it
worked fine. I tried to save as pdf in FM10 and it started but quit with
complaints that there was no Adobe ps driver available.

On the Adobe website i only find older versions of ps drivers and all the
answers I can see are about having to set it up as a new printer in
Windows, but I do not know where to look for it. I don't find any such
thing in System32\drivers.

And they warn that the ps drivers on Adobe's website do not work with Vista
or newer.

Any comments?

Re: Adobe PS driver vanished after Adobe failed Acrobat update

2013-09-16 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Thanks for the suggestions. They helped me take the right decision. :-)

I did not have Reader installed earlier, but after having sent the computer
to a shop (due to USB problems and other anomalities) some changes seem to
have been made that triggered automatic update of Reader. Perhaps they
installed it? And failing to install the update seems to have killed the
printer.

I deleted Reader and ran the Acrobat X repair, and voilá! My Adobe PDF
printer is here again!

Hi Maxwell,

It would have been great to be able to attend, but sadly I am otherwise
engaged. Will this be recorded and available on Adobe website?

Thank you,

Download HovText www.hovtext.com. It toggles copyint text with and without
formats for a number of apps, incl. FM. Have used it successfully on both
7.2 and 10. Only remember when in Structured FM, when on it will not copy
elements either, so remember to toggle off when needed.

Re: OT: Font suggestions for book?

2013-08-16 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Choosing a font set is always a bit of a matter of taste. However, it is
usual to see in (company) manuals sans serif types like Arial (ususally
because no one bothers to check for anything else) or the Calibri font that
came with the newer MS Office suites.

I used to opt for Helvetica instead of Arial, mainly because the numbers
were clearer in Helvetica. But that was clearly before Calibri times. ;-)

Some serif fonts come to mind. I am working with a book now about a certain
institution, and I decided to use the old Cheltenham for body and Myriad
Pro for headings.

I have spent a lot of time through the years looking for and comparing
fonts, and in one instance, trying to decide on the best font for the
dim-sighted, I made four copies of sample text with different fonts and had
people test read (from a distance to closer up). The one decided upon
seemed to help the dyslexics too.

So, if you want to study fonts, you will be spending a lot of your free
time. But it is fun! But your customer will not complement you on it,
becaus he/she/they do not know what it really is that makes them like or
hate the looks of the book. There are so many things to consider.

But you are right: Readability counts. So, not Arial! And not fancy fonts.

Probably this is of little help, but it is Friday night. :-)

And, I could send you some samples in pdf if you like. Main thing is: What
does your font library consist of? New fonts can be very expensive.

Have a nice weekend!

Bodvar, Iceland

 Greetings everyone,

 ** **

I’m working in FM 8, Win 7 x64 on a book that will be published this Fall.
I’ve now been asked to do the book design, in addition to most of the
writing and basic template design. The subject matter is primarily
financial … it’s a book about the history of taxation. It’s not a scholarly
work at all, but rather one designed to “wake up” American teens and young
adults to some of the issues involved. Footnotes are used here and there,
but more for explanation of background/details than in a traditional sense
as references. The book will be published in a standard 6x9 format,
 paperback.

 ** **

All that having been said … What are people’s favorite or recommended
fonts for such a project. And since this is being published on a shoestring
budget with a nonprofit/educational bent, suggestions of free fonts would
 be most welcome.

 ** **

 Well, thanks in advance!

 Best regards,

 Elchanan

AFAIK, Hunspell uses (or at least did use) plain text files. In Open Office
and Libre Office, I can add to it from the old UNIX libraries for aspell or
ispell. Which can be added to directly in a text editor, if you want to.

I don't know whether it is any different in FM11. Have you googled hunspell?

I want to research on the Hunspell dictionary functionality, but all I
can find is just ONE single reference in the User Guide [and online Help]
to a setting on the Edit Preferences dialog. No further information at
 all.

I then decided to read the FrameMaker 11 - Read me.pdf file, which is
part of the FrameMaker 11 trial software package that was downloaded at the
end of June, but there appears to be some confusion:

 * FrameMaker 11 - Read me.pdf file - System requirements
 http://www.adobe.com/go/framemaker_systemreqs
takes you to the Adobe special Error404 page.
I suspect they meant to say:
 http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/systemreqs.html

 * FrameMaker 11 - Read me.pdf file - Installation Instructions
For detailed instructions on installation, visit the installation
 page: http://www.adobe.com/go/cs_install_instruct_en;

 Creative Suite 6 Installation Instructions?
OK. I thought FM11 was part of the TC suite.

 * FrameMaker 11 - Read me.pdf file - Trial software
You can convert from a trial to a full version at any time by either
purchasing a copy of the product or signing up for a subscription

Really? No wonder why there's been so much discussion on this list about
 the subject.
Where do I find further information on this?

 * FrameMaker 11 - Read me.pdf file Known Issues?
 http://adobe.com/go/fm_known_issues_en

 Adobe special Error404 page again.

So, I'm still none the wiser about Hunspell. Oh well.

Re: Initial size of Variables Pod in FM10

Thanks to all who responded.

Attaching the variables pod to the dock seems to make the pod behave
(within the dock). In my case, this means that FM is difficult to use
without a second monitor which again affects some FM shortcuts.

So I think Adobe should look at this as a minor bug.

Changed Section and Subsection Numbers

2013-06-29 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Your problem may just be what you say: "each chapter had the Format ?
Document ? Numbering (and Page) set properly."
The book update does not look for what each chapter file says about
numbering. You have to set it in the book (right-click each file reference
there and setting all numbering attributes relevant to your publication).
You can choose one or more files at the same time, doing the numbering "in
bulk" (almost).

When saving as a PDF, we need to generate bookmarks using Elements, but
they are not available. The whole list is blank. If I switch back to

Combining crossref formats

2013-05-31 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Hi all you wonderful Framers!

I have not seen a discussion on this (it may have escaped me), but having
last year jumped from FM7.2 to FM10, I was looking for a way to combine a
Xref format to two elements, namely one empty holding the chapter/section
(not so named) numbering and the other, in a separate line, holding the
chapter/section name.

I did not need this until last week, and ran into the same predicament as
with FM7.x, having to create two different Xrefs.

Today, having some time on my hand, I decided to look into this problem
again, and found out that in FM10 (maybe earlier?) you now have the optioin
of looking for text or number from an additional or different element, so
now I have a format that looks like this:
Hyperlink$elemparanum[Kafli], $elemtextDefault ¶ Font
Kafli, meaning the empty element holding the chapter number. And
Hyperlink is just a Character Format Tag.

I just want to say thanks to the FM developers team for this and all the
other things I still look forward to find. :-)

Bodvar

Re: Selecting Colours for Conditions

2013-04-19 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Great, Helen.

Another way of doing it might have been to create colors under the names of
the condition names: eOnly, Print1, etc. That way you would not have to
remember any color names or to which condition each color applied.

Cheers,
Bodvar Bjorgvinsson

Does anyone know if any kind of “guide” exists regarding the best colours
 to choose when creating Conditions?

When I initially set up my Conditions, I spent a lot of time testing to
see how colours blended when I had multiple Conditions applied to the same
text (lots of combos ended up being virtually identical onscreen even
though the combination of underlying colours were quite different). It
didn’t make sense to use colours in the first place if I couldn’t tell
where one combo stopped and the next one started.

I now have to add 2 new conditions (on a tight deadline) so I really
don’t have a lot of time to test things. If someone has put together some
kind of guide, I’d really love to see it – if you’re willing to share.

Recently I broke up a very large eBook into three volumes for print. It's
the first time I've using conditionals seriously. I followed the advice in
Sarah O'Keefe's book and avoided having overlapping conditions. I had to
play around a bit until I got useful contrasts.

The book said that FM would show all overlapping conditions as magenta so
it would be a good idea to avoid assigning magenta to a particular
condition. In fact, I never saw magenta at all; all the overlaps that I
had in my initial scheme (subsequently abandoned) came through as a sort of
khaki when I did the conditionals for the first chapter. That's when I
decided Sarah was right and I should not try to piggyback the same
 conditions.

The scheme I ended up with was five conditions: eOnly, printOnly, Print1,
 Print2 and Print3. (I have a navigation scheme built into the e-Version,
which was not appropriate for the print books. The book will never have an
omnibus print edition as it is wy too large.)

I picked the brightest possible high-contrast colours for the five
conditions (avoiding magenta by Sarah's advice and blue because the Silicon
Prairie indexing tools use blue for index markers. I also avoided red
because Fm8 seems to use it as a warning when conditions conflict in some
way.) I think I had forest green for eOnly, green for Print1, cyan for
Print2, salmon for Print3 and dark blue for printOnly.

On thing I did find was that it is very easy to change the entire colour
scheme. Once I had it pinned down, I just kept a card by me with the
colours on it, so I didn't have to think about it when repeatedly swapping
 condition markers between {a colour} and {As Is}.

HTH, maybe a little bit, anyway...
 Helen

Selecting Colours for Conditions

2013-04-19 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Great, Helen.

Another way of doing it might have been to create colors under the names of
the condition names: eOnly, Print1, etc. That way you would not have to
remember any color names or to which condition each color applied.

Cheers,
Bodvar Bjorgvinsson

Re: switch between 8.5x11 and A4 sized pages within the same book?

2013-02-21 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Hi Alison,

The European equivalent to Tabloid is A3 (297x420mm) which is 18mm
wider and 12mm shorter than the 11x17 Tabloid.

Hope this is of some help.

Also, does anyone know the equivalent custom paper size “fudge” for
switching between Tabloid (11x17) and the closest European paper size?

You could try creating two separate templates (in FM files that are separate
from the book and separate from each other). One template file is 8.5 x 11,
and the other is A4. Both can contain all other attributes (paragraph
styles, character styles, colour definitions, etc). Apply the first template
when you want to create a PDF for the US market. Once that's complete, apply
the second template to the book to create the PDF for the European market.

Alternatively, you could use a processor that ignores your FM settings (that
is, you would set up all your formatting in the processor), and then
 generate two different outputs.

 Fellow Framers,

I'm mostly a lurker, but have found the wealth of knowledge shared by this
list's members to be quite helpful!

I have a manual (I'm on Frame 8) in which I've used conditional text to
show/hide tables, text, parts lists depending on if it's for the American
 market or European.

This manual originated for a US-made product so it started life with 8.5x11
(US-letter size) pages. And it didn't even occur to me that it might need to
be A4-sized for the European market.

Is there a good way to switch back and forth between A4 and 8.5x11 page
sizes, depending on which version of a book you want to print?

I have the sneaking suspicion that I will have to break this into two
separate books, but I figured I'd ask to see if anyone had recommendations.

 Thanks,

 Lise

Re: cannot generate PDF

2013-02-14 Thread Böðvar Björgvinsson
Hi Bill,

The most usual thing here, as most have suggested, is that a corrupt
graphic on or next to the problematic pages is causing this. However, as
the error message mentions Encoding, I would also look at the fonts on
these pages. Is there any text (or an entity for holding text) on these
pages that could be using a corrupt font, not used earlier in the document
or a letter from such font not used earlier? You might have to look at the
MIF file to see this.

Hope you find the cure. :-)
