The real problem with this is if you move all of your boxes and pods to

the second monitor, and someone borrows your second monitor when you are

in the rest room, when you get back you no longer have any FrameMaker 9

controls.

Finally, does anyone with FM use two screens? I am unhappy with all these

boxes and pods in FM9 and would like them all on a second screen (which I

would have to buy). I have not learnt how to dock them yet. Any hints

 gratefully received.

RE: Chinese Characters in User Variables

2009-05-21 Thread Phil Heron

Hi Nate,

You don't specify which version of FrameMaker you're using, but, at least for
versions 7.2 and earlier, you need to set the operating system's language for
non-Unicode programs to an appropriate value to successfully use Far Eastern
languages in dialog boxes.

1. In Windows Control Panel, open the Regional and Language Options applet.
2. In the Regional and Language Options dialog, display the Advanced tab.
3. Select the language you want to work with, for example Chinese (PRC).
4. Restart the computer.

If the language you want doesn't appear in the list you will need to add it
using the Languages tab.

This setting only applies to non-Unicode programs such as FrameMaker V7.2 and
earlier.

Hope this helps,

Phil Heron

Ah, it's good to be back on Framers after a 15-or-so-year
hiatus! My question:

On an XP machine localized for CH, I'm trying to convert
and translate a manual into Simplified Chinese. I'm doing
fine with entering or pasting characters directly into the
document, but am having no success with variables.

In the edit variable window I can get a character in and
displaying correctly, but as soon as I space over to do the
next character, the previous one changes to a question mark.

I hope there is just a simple setting or step I'm missing.
Any suggestions? Thanks!

RE: Omega symbol becomes W in pdf

2009-03-18 Thread Phil Heron
Two things for you to check, Nancy:

1. Make sure you have the Windows Symbol font installed. This is used in some
magic way by Distiller and it's abcense causes the sort of problem you are
seeing.

2. In FrameMaker, check that your Symbol character tag uses the Windows
Symbol font and NOT the Symbol Std font. Symbol Std is a private font
installed by FrameMaker.

My document uses some special symbols, like the Omega.

To create it, I type W and then apply a Symbol character tag, which applies the
Symbol font.

I've created PDFs from this file in two ways:

---Used Framemaker's Save as feature.

---Printed to .ps file and opened it in Acrobat Distiller. In this case, I've
deselected Do not send fonts to printer. I believe this should assure that
the Symbol font is sent to the printer.

Either way, the Omega character is turned back into a W in the final PDF.

This is also happening with the Symbol +/minus sign (the plus is directly over
the minus) -- it is transformed into a plain minus sign.
NOT GOOD.

I'm sure this problem is as old as the hills, but I have Googled lots of
phrases and have not found a good treatment of this subject.

In the short term, I'm creating .gifs of the symbols and importing them into
the text as graphics, but that is time-consuming and clumsy.

All suggestions will be very welcome.

Try the Frame Template Packs.

Although designed for Frame 5.5, they can be used just as well with more
up-to-date versions of FrameMaker.

You can get the template packs from:

 Verner,
You should be able to do a File Save Book As, renaming
the book file. This should rename your generated files to
 match the book filename.

My FM template contains all formats in the book. When I
 create a new
book I take a chapter file at set it all up from there:

Add front page, toc, chapters, glossary index and rear
 page. All set up
by using specific headings to call the correct master
 pages. I set up
the page and chapter numbering from the book and set up the
 Table of
Contents from the Set up Table of Contents
 menu.

Now a Documentation group is going to use my template. They
 are all new
to Framemaker. Can I set up a dummy book that
 they just copy to
 their
working directory? I see that I can rename files from
 within the book
and get links working but I cannot rename the book file
 itself.

Is there an easy way to get the book file renamed and get
 the generated
files like TOC, Index and Glossary working without having
 to set them up
 from scratch again?

Do you have any other good ideas on how to optimize a
 template for group
 usage.

Deirdre,

Have you explored the Frame Template Packs?

Template Pack 2 contains some Fun Stuff templates, including some for
foldable cards.

Although designed for Frame 5.5, they can be used just as well with more
up-to-date versions of FrameMaker.

You can get the template packs from:

RE: How to prevent Framemaker changing the Link

2008-09-24 Thread Phil Heron
Michael,

If I remember correctly, typing a string such as \d in a Frame dialog box is a
way of typing a special character, in this case the dagger character.

I believe the way to put the directory separator in is to use the unix-style /,
ie a forward slash like this:

message openfile W:/Schadstoffliteratur/Dioxine/Attempt to establish
benchmarks for Dioxins.pdf

Hope this helps,

Hallo,
I have a Problem which has hopefully an easy solution. I try to make Hyperlinks
to open an other PDF on my harddisk.

I write:
message openfile W:\Schadstoffliteratur\Dioxine\Attempt to establish
benchmarks for Dioxins.pdf

Than Framemaker convert this to:
message openfile W:\Schadstoffliteratur‡ioxine\Attempt to establish benchmarks
for Dioxins.pdf

Looking in the MIF I see the following:
MText `message openfile W:\\Schadstoffliteratur‡ioxine\\Attempt to
establish benchmarks for Dioxins.pdf'

The resulting Link does not work, of course. When I repair the link in the MIF
manually, open it in FM, print to PDF, it works fine:
MText `message openfile W:\\ElbeSchadstoffliteratur\\Dioxine\\Attempt to
establish benchmarks for Dioxins.pdf'

But I may not touch the Link in Framemaker again. I want to make hundreds of
similar Links, so I am looking for a solution.

How to prevent Framemaker changing the Link?

2008-05-02 Thread Phil Heron
Hi Geoffrey,

I'm not an expert on graphics but I've had success in the past using the
Save as HTML function in both Frame and Word. Taking this option saves
each image as a graphic file.

In Frame, you can choose between GIF, JPEG and PNG as the graphic
format. Specify which one to use on the HTML Options dialog (Utilities
HTML Setup - Options button).

I'm not sure what format Word uses or whether you have a choice of
formats.

Hi Framers,

A posting some weeks ago mentioned a utility that could extract graphics
copied into FM files and restore them in their original format. I should
have been paying more attention at the time, but can someone remind me
what that utility is called? (I'm hoping it can do a better job than
Acrobat.)

BTW: does anyone know of a similar utility that can pull graphics out of
MS Word documents?

RE: Japanese FrameMaker

2008-04-23 Thread Phil Heron
Paul,

I have not seen V8 but the previous Windows versions do include the
language versions you mention. However, the serial number provided when
you buy the package only allows you to install the language purchased.
If you want to install the Japanese version you will need a Japanese
specific serial number. I would expect you could buy this from any
territory.

Note that if you only need access to the Japanese-specific features, not
the Japanese UI, you can obtain these from the standard English language
version. To do this on Windows XP, change the system setting Language
for non-Unicode programs to Japanese.

Ha - I've just realised that Frame 8 is, unlike previous versions, a
Unicode application. In this case, take a look at the Asian Language
Features Information on the FrameMaker Preferences dialog to see which
Japanese features are available.

RE: Frame 7.2 and Vista

2008-02-29 Thread Phil Heron
Hi Edwin,

I do have Frame 7.2 installed under Vista but I haven't been using it
intensively on this platform - my primary working environment is still
XP.

There was no problem with the standard installation of Frame, but I
didn't install the included Acrobat Distiller as I already have Acrobat
8 Pro.

As I mentioned in my message to the Framers list, I was at first unable
to install the build 158 patch, but after trying the following
suggestion from Denise L. Moss-Fritch I was able to apply the update:
---
Right-click on the patch file and select Properties.

From the Compatibility tab of the Properties dialog, select Run this
program in the compatibility mode for check box and select Windows XP
(Service Patch 2).

Click OK.
---

I haven't noticed any problems with Frame 7.2 on Vista but, as I
mentioned, I haven't been using it intensively.

Incidentally, I recently had to edit some old Frame 5.5 documents and I
was surpised to find that Frame 5.5.6 installed and worked unexpectedly
smoothly under Vista.

If I had had the choice, I would have chosen XP for my new PC. I find
some features of Vista extremely awkward, in particular the new version
of Windows Explorer.

Hope this helps,

Phil Heron

Frame 7.2 and Vista

Framers,

I have just received a new PC - it's running Windows Vista.

I installed Frame 7.2 (build 144) successfully but found I was unable to
install the patch to update it to build 158.

I know Frame 7.2 is not officially supported on Vista but I am not
currently in a position to upgrade to Frame 8.

Does anybody have any experience with running this combination?

I would be particulary interested in finding out how stable Frame 7.2 is
on Vista and whether there is any way I can install the 158 patch.

Thanks,

Subject: Strange behavior when opening frop down lists in dialog boxes

Good morning all,

FM 7.0 Windows XP

This strange thing is happening in dialog boxes. I wonder if it has
always been this way (not logical) and I never noticed or this is some
new. weird, skewed behavior.
When first opening a dialog (for instance, the Character Designer) it
takes more than one click on an arrow to open a drop down list (the font
list, for instance). In fact, in fact it takes about 3 clicks:
Click 1 - nothing happens
Click 2 - the field is now in focus
Click 3 - drop down list, well...drops down.

After this intial 3 click process, any other drop down menu in the
dialog box opens with the normal one click.
As long as the dialog box stays open the 3 click operation does not
return. However, after closing the dialog box and opening it again, 3
clicks to open a drop down list are necessary.

This, of course, slows down the work pace and it is a pity to add
extraneous mouse clicks to over worked hands.

Any guesses as how to take care of this annoying problem?

Strange behavior when opening frop down lists in dialog boxes

2007-10-10 Thread Phil Heron
Leah,

I believe this is known behaviour when using the "Windows Classic" theme
in XP.

Could this be your situation?

Hi All

I have just had the trial version of FM 8 added to my applications, and
wonder where the Structured Application Developer's Guide went. Is it no
longer available? Not furnished with the trial version? Somewhere else?

If someone could point me to it, I would be grateful.

Thanks

I have not tried the following with the FM 7.2 patches, however the
following did work with another application.

Right-click on the patch file and select Properties.

From the Compatibility tab of the Properties dialog, select Run this
program in the compatibility mode for check box and select Windows XP
(Service Patch 2).

Click OK.

Now try running the patch.

I know Frame 7.2 is not officially supported on Vista but I am not

Does anybody have any experience with running this combination?

RE: Registry Settings

I think the value is stored in the ACP (ANSI code page) key under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Nls\CodePage

My standard system has 1252 (Western European) and my Trad. Chinese
system has 950 for this key.

The character set used in the Command Prompt window is stored in the
OEMCP key.

Hope this helps!

Greetings,

Sometime ago, someone posted a lovely little trick where you can change
something, somewhere and configure your paste settings.

By default, if you copy something from Word and paste it into Frame, you get a
Word object or something. I want to paste text. I edited a file somewhere,
based off of suggestions from this list, and fixed it. Now I can't find the
setting again. I'm having trouble finding my login for the FrameUsers site, so
can't search the archives.

If someone who remembers this setting would be so kind as to post it again, I'd
really appreciate it.

I'm now using FrameMaker 7.1p114, if that makes a difference.

Thanks!

Difference between us and international english Framemaker

2006-12-14 Thread Phil Heron

Verner,

I believe my copy of FramMaker is the International English one.

When you install it you see a dialog asking you to choose between US English or
International English. I guess you wouldn't see this dialog if you had a
US-only version.

Choosing International English installs A4 versions of the custom templates. I
don't think there's any other difference.

(One extra step I take after installing is to change the "Language" setting in
maker.ini from USEnglish to UKEnglish - this sets UK English as the default
language in the designers.)

RE: FM cannot find file message

2006-07-17 Thread Phil Heron
I had a few problems with FM file associations recently when I removed
my old FM7.0 version. I had both FM 7.0 and FM7.2 installed and
double-clicking a FM file opened it in FM7.0.

Once I removed FM7.0 I could no longer open my FM files from Explorer.

To rectify this, I used the fmreg.txt file in the FrameMaker home
directory to update the registry. You can open this file to see what it
does and to read the instructions for using it. (In short, at a Windows
command prompt, change to the FrameMaker program directory and type
FrameMaker -reg (without the quotes).

Howdy, folks. I like to double-click on my FM files to open both the app
and the file. That's just how I like to work. Last week I had a PC crash
and had to rebuild my disk, load apps back on, etc. I'm running FM
7.1p114 on Win XP Pro. After getting my apps back on the hard drive, I
now find that whenever I double-click on an FM file, even when FM is
already open, I get a message like the following:

Cannot find the file named Z:\Release.
Make sure that the file exists.

Now, Z is a mapped drive. The full path is \\rubble\tech pubs\Release
Notes\Release-Notes-production\Release-Notes-7.2.1\filename.

What appears in the Win Explorer address bar is Z:\Release
Notes\Release-Notes-production\Release-Notes-7.2.1\filename.

I know someone is going to say, Eek! Spaces in directory names! How
low-class can you be? Yeah, fine, I'm low-class. The issue is that
heretofore, this action has always worked. I have never before gotten
this error message. I have always been able to double-click a file in
just such a directory structure, and FM has opened it without complaint.

I want it to do so again. Changing the directory structure to eliminate
spaces in names is not an option.

Any ideas why FM is now biffing this simple little task? And how I can
make it go back to business as usual?

thanks, bws

RE: Problems with special characters

2006-07-05 Thread Phil Heron
Mathieu,

Alt+242 was the code for the greater or equal than symbol in the US
MS-DOS codepage 437.

This character is not available in the Windows Western European codepage
(1252) or the matching MS-DOS codepage 850.

The character is, however, available in the Symbol font.

To use this character in FrameMaker:

1. Choose the Symbol font
2. Press Ctrl + q and then 3

All the characters available with FrameMaker are listed in the online

Dear all,

I have a tough time finding shortcuts for special characters.

On the Internet, I found an Ascii table which specifies ALT + 242 for
greater or equal than ; unfortunately, when I type that, an equal
character appears.

I modified the regional options on my computer (set to French at first)
through the configuration panel but it did not change anything.

I have the same problem for the different than character.

Do you simply recommend using the Equation palette ?

Any help appreciated.

I modified the regional options on my computer (set to French at first)
through the configuration panel but it did not change anything.

I have the same problem for the "different than" character.

Do you simply recommend using the Equation palette ?

Any help appreciated.

Mathieu

Aargh!

I've re-instated AdobeStd and AdobePiStd.

In my message I also mentioned that I removed the AdobeFnt07.lst file.
It seems that this is generated by Acrobat Distiller rather than
FrameMaker. Apologies to anyone who has been fruitlessly searching for
this file.

The AdobePiStd font is a substitution font for ITC Zapf Dingbats used by
the PDF Library and by Acrobat when PDF files call for ITC Zapf Dingbats
but do not have it installed. In the case of FrameMaker, it may be
necessary when PDF files are imported into FrameMaker.

It should NOT be removed as part of any expedient for faster FrameMaker

RE: FM 7.2 starts much slower than 7.1

2006-05-19 Thread Phil Heron
Framers,

I think the new fonts supplied with Frame 7.2 (and 7.1) could do with better
documentation.

When I received my FM7.2 upgrade I knew it was supplied with a new set of fonts
so I looked on the CD but couldn't find them anywhere.

After inspecting my FM7.2 installation I found them all lurking in \Program
Files\Adobe\FrameMaker7.2\fminit\fonts\Adobe.

I then attempted to install the fonts from there using the Windows Fonts
control panel. After some puzzlement I eventually realised they were Private
Fonts which could only be used in FM 7.2. They are clearly loaded by FM during
program startup and thus lead to the extended startup time.

I also eventually discovered that the only way to access the full set of font
variations was by setting up paragraph styles.
And finally, to embed the fonts in my Acrobat documents, I found I had to go
the Font Locations dialog in Distiller and update the incorrect path to these
private fonts.

Why couldn't the FM 7.2 New Features PDF not say something like:

FM 7.2 comes with a set of high-quality OpenType fonts. They are loaded during
application startup and are then available for use in your FrameMaker
documents. You cannot use them in your Windows applications.

However, now I know how to use these fonts, thankyou to Adobe for including
them!

of page sizes.

I tried this and it worked first time:

- Create three Frame files, one portrait, one landscape and one a custom
size.
- Create a Frame book containing the three files.
- Print the book to a file, using the Adobe PDF printer and ticking the
"Generate Acrobat Data" box.
- Open the generated PS file with Acrobat Distiller.

Success! A PDF file is created contining a combination of page sizes.

In short:
Make sure you are printing to the Adobe PDF printer.
Make sure you set "Generate Acrobat Data"

Hope this helps,

Subject: Help with PDF problem and 11x17 page size

I'm new so please be kind. I work in Frame 7.1b023 with no plug-ins.

I have a book file that incorporates multiple 8-1/2 x 11 page size
files, multiple 11 x 17 page size files with cross references within
files and from file to file, stand alone TOCs, LOFs, and LOTs that are
generated and then copied and pasted into the front of the files. The
book is then PDF'd with create hyperlinks turned on.

The PDF works great and all the cross references for the TOC, LOF, LOT,
from Frame work in the PDF.

The problem is that the 11 x 17 pages (which are figures) end up on
8-1/2 x
11 pages in the book PDF. What I have been doing is going into each of
the
11 x 17 files (9 total), and saving each as a stand-alone 11 x 17 PDF.
Then I exchange each new 11 x 17 PDF for the old 8-1/2 x 11 page in the
book PDF file. This works for getting the correct page size, but the
link from the LOF (which is not on the 11 x 17 page) does not work.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to make the links work to the 11 x
17 pages?

Thanks

RE: Chinese-language FM documents

2006-03-14 Thread Phil Heron
To display the level of support for Asian languages in Frame, choose
File Preferences General and then click the Asian Language
Features button.

If you are running Frame in a Western environment (for example US
English) a message will tell you that you can display Asian text
(assuming you have the right fonts installed) but that most Asian
language features are disabled.

To enable full support for Asian languages (using a Western version of
XP), start from the Windows XP Regional and Language Options control
panel.
- First choose the Languages tab. Tick the check box Install files
for East Asian languages. This will cause the necessary support files
(fonts, IMEs etc) for Chinese, Japanese etc to be installed. You will
probably have to re-start after doing this.

- Next choose the Advanced tab from the Regional and Language Options
control panel and you will see a box titled Language for non-Unicode
programs. If you are in the US this will probably be US English. Change
the language here to the one you want to use in Frame - most likely this
will be Simplified Chinese so you should choose Chinese (PRC). You will
probably have to re-start again after doing this.

Now display Frame's language support again and this time you should be
informed that all Asian language features are now supported.

If your Chinese speaker is familiar with using Windows to enter Chinese
text, they should find that they can now choose their preferred keyboard
and enter Chinese text into Windows applications (including Frame) using
their normal techniques.

If you want more information about using Asian keybards (IMEs) you might
want to look at the following Microsoft site:
http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/handson/user/IME_Paper.mspx

Hope this is of some help to you,

Subject: Chinese-language FM documents

Hi Framers,

I need to edit a book of Chinese-language files (with the help of a
Chinese speaker who doesn't know FM). I can read the files in FM 7
running under an English-language version of XP. I can even do some
minor editing. But I can't do much with dialogs. I believe that FM 7 can
run on a Chinese-language Windows OS with all the functionality it has
when running on an English OS. Can someone confirm that that is the
case?

If FM 7 can run on, say, Chinese-language Windows XP, how does one enter
Chinese characters? The online manuals that come with FM 7 say that you
need to use a front-end processor (FEP), which is also known as an
Input Method Editor (IME). What sort of beast is that? And how do you
find one?

Finally, are there any pitfalls the novice needs to be aware of? (In
particular, I need to enter index markers and generate a TOC and index,
as well as some minor text edits.)

Thanks

RE: Polish in FrameMaker

2006-03-07 Thread Phil Heron
Yves,

I've tried this out on my system. Here's what I did to copy Polish text
from Word to FrameMaker:

1. I defined a FrameMaker paragraph format to use the Arial CE font.
2. I typed some text using Polish characters in a Word document.
3. I selected the text in Word and used Ctrl+C to copy it to the
clipboard.
4. In FrameMaker, I put the insertion point into the paragraph formatted
with the Arial CE font.
5. I chose Paste Special from the Frame Edit menu and selected RTF as
the paste format.

Bingo - the Polish characters displayed as expected.

You could move RTF to the beginning of the ClipboardFormatsPriorities
line in maker.ini. This will allow you to use regular Paste to put the
Polish text in.

I can also switch to the Polish keyboard and type Polish text directly
into Frame.
I didn't need to customise maker.ini or use WGL Assistant to activate
Arial CE.

My environment:
Windows XP Professional (UK English default locale)
Word XP
FrameMaker 7.2 (144)
Acrobat 6 Professional

Subject: Polish in FrameMaker

Hello Framers,

here we go again with the old FrameMaker does not support Unicode
story.

A customer of mine has FrameMaker files which already contain Polish
text.
He has now received some new Polish text in Word which he has to copy
and paste in the FrameMaker files. The known problem is that the
characters are okay in Word (because Word supports Unicode), but the
special (Polish) characters become question marks when you paste the
text in FrameMaker.

The maker.ini file has been customized and Arial CE has been activated
using WGL Assistant.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Best regards

Polish in FrameMaker

FrameMaker 6 and Distiller font embedding problem

2006-03-06 Thread Phil Heron
Here are my answers to these questions:

1. Font licensing
Purchasing a font does not necessarily entitle you to embed the font in
a PDF file. It depends on the restrictions the font designer has
specified for the font.
If you have the Microsoft Opentype font properties extension (available
from the Microsoft Typography web site www.microsoft.com/truetype), you
can inspect the "Embeddability" of the font. If it is set to "Restricted
licence embedding" then Acrobat Distiller will not embed it in the PDF
file.

2. Acrobat Distiller was the name of the distillation port created by
Acrobat up to V5. With V6 the name of the port changed to "Adobe PDF"
but it still performs the same function.

Copying Text Box Crashes Frame

2006-03-03 Thread Phil Heron
I can do this without any problem.

Does the problem occur when you create a brand-new document or is it
specific to a particular document?
I have Frame 7.2 running on Windows XP. What is your environment?

FrameMaker 7.0 and now 7.2

When I draw a text box using the tools palette and try to copy it
(select the box and click Ctrl C), I get the dreaded Internal Error:
7204, #, ##

and FrameMaker shuts down.

I was hoping this might get fixed. Does anyone know anything about
this? ( just looked through Adobe Forums and FAQs and didn't see it).

Thanks,

HTML character entities in XML files

2006-01-09 Thread Phil Heron

Mark,

In answer to your question about character entities in xml files, here
are two solutions to your problem:

1. Easy solution:
If you only want to use one or two character entities, add the
definitions to your DTD. For a non-breaking space, add a line such as
the following to your DTD:

2. More flexible solution

To use entity definitions stored in a file with structured Frame you
will need 3 things:

1. The file(s) storing the entity definitions.
2. A reference to the entity definitions in the DTD
3. A reference to the location of the entity definition file(s) in the
strctured application definition document.

Take a look at the example structured applications supplied with Frame
to see how this works.

Frame XHTML structured application
-
- The entity definitions are stored in 3 files in the
structure\xml\xhtml\app directory. You can find in
xhtml-lat1.ent.
- The entity definitions are referenced in the DTD (called "dtd" in this
case).
- Entity locations are specified in structapps.fm in the "Entity
locations" element.

Frame xDocBook structured application
-
- The entity definitions are stored in the .ent files in the
structure\xml\isoents directory. You can find in iso-num.ent.
- The entity definitions are referenced in the DocBook XML Character
Entities module of the DTD (in the file called "dbcentx.mod" in this
case).
- Entity locations are specified in structapps.fm in the "Entity
locations" element.

NB: If you want to open xml files based on the Frame XHTML or xDocBook
DTDs in an xml editor such as XMetaL, you need to specify the entity
file locations in the DTD.

Hope this is not too incomprehensible,

Subject: HTML character entities in XML files

I have a contributor who sends me XML files containing HTML character
entities - particularly , but also some others. (it's a byproduct
of his editing software)

These are not recognised by my XML Frame application. I have #include
"isoall.rw" in my rules file, but note that nbsp isn't among the
entities in any of the iso files.

Ideas on the simplest/cleanest way to deal with this?

default fonts in Framemaker 6

2005-12-21 Thread Phil Heron
When you create a new document in FrameMaker, the paragraph and character
formats etc are derived from the document used as the template for the new
document.

If you create a new document using the File > New menu option, FrameMaker bases
the document on the file "custom" in the FrameMaker fminit directory. As this
is a FrameMaker document you can open it and make changes to the paragraph
formats and so on. Save it with the same name and FrameMaker will use it as the
template for any future custom documents. This procedure is described in the
Frame manual in the section "Changing templates for blank paper and text
files", P293 for Frame 5.5, P326 for Frame 7 (I don't have Frame 6). It's
probably also in the online help.

I think you are mistaken about Distiller failing to produce press-quality PDF
files if it finds any Truetype fonts. There have been many messages on this
list from Dov Isaacs of Adobe about this very subject.

Subject: default fonts in Framemaker 6

Dear Framemaker users,

Is it possible to change the default font (currently Times New Roman) that
Framemaker uses for paragraph, character, table formats etc?

I have looked in maker.ini, but its font defaults relate ONLY to what font
substitutions are made where a user doesn't have a particular font.

I don't EVER want to use Times New Roman or any other Truetype font in a
document that I prepare for commercial printing. Distiller fails to produce
press-quality PDF files if it finds any Truetype fonts. And it can be very
difficult to find exactly where the Truetype font is lurking in a Framemaker
document.

The only workaround I can see currently is to delete everything from the
paragraph, character and table catalogs, and start from scratch.

Thanks
