Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2015

2020-04-02 Thread Peter Gold
I first saw FM in 1989 on a Sun. Also Interleaf. Tech pubs was evaluating
both, against their established unix text-based workflow (vi and others),
that used UNIX scripts to perform miraculous manipulations, and
author-embedded dot-commands to format output with customized xroff. A few
of us got to try FrameMaker 2.x on a Mac; Windows at that time and PCs it
ran were too wimpy to handle FM.

Around 1994, I had a NeXT, SPARCstation, IBM-PC, and Mac on my tech-support
desk, all with at least one FM version.

One of the best "AHA!" FM moments I had: A student who came to our
Sun-based classroom for FM training demanded a Mac, because UNIX was scary.
Couldn't make the case that "it's the same on all platforms." So, we got it
done ASAP. One new problem: The student saw that FM on all the UNIX
machines were working exactly as on the Mac, so they demanded we swap back
to a UNIX machine. Huh? Why? "Well, I can add 'UNIX proficiency' to my
resume!"

Remember Marshall McCluhan's 1960's rephrasing of, "We shape our tools,
and, thereafter, our tools shape us," into "We ape our tools, and,
thereafter, our tools ape us?" FrameMaker is one of those, IMO.

Thanks for all the memory-spurs, folks. Yes, this one of the unique
Internet zones that abounds in helpfulness rather than snarky flame wars.

Started with, I think, Frame 5.5.2, so I'm a relative newbie compared to

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2015

2020-04-02 Thread Craig Ede
I had a Windows copy of Frame 3 tossed to me by my company's Tech Pubs manager
back in 1991 or 1992. "They say this is better than PageMaker. Check it out!" I
was immediately sold on it and I didn't even work for his department. They
shifted over after they saw what I was doing with it.

My personal purchased Windows from 1992 was for Windows and on disks.

The suggestion to change Interleaf to FrameMaker is still operative when
running spellcheck in FM10, which is the version I happen to have on this
machine. It's probably still in there today. Why fix what ain't broken.

For me, it was 1988 (FM version 3, I think?) on a Sun 3/50 (the one where the
B/W monitor was physically attached to the top of the computer chassis pizza
box).

Peter, the first Windows version was FM 4, I think ... I beta tested it for
Frame Technology then. Came on floppy disks (I think I still have them around
here somewhere)!

Side-bar for those who remember the competition: when you ran spell-check in FM
3, it would correct the word "Interleaf" to "FrameMaker". :)

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2015

2020-04-02 Thread Simon BUCH

Hello everybody,

I have found that the standard Windows 10 setting for making font sizes
larger affects not only the text, but also affects the Adobe "Glass"
user interface - where clicking one menu heading would open the menu a
distance away from where you had clicked.

That behaviour was exacerbated when using "Touch" user interface, and
especially with very large displays.

Note on the posted issue: I've got the book window displaying properly
now. Thanks oodles & bunches to each of you who gave me ideas on things to
try! You rock socks!

What I did...

1. From the Windows font settings, I selected the recommended size
(1920x1080) and 100% font size.
2. Restarted Windows 10 and waited for updates to be applied.
3. Opened Frame 2015.
4. Selected Edit > Preferences.
5. Under Monitor Size, selected 22" (don't know that it matters).
6. Clicked OK.
7. Closed Frame 2015.
8. Opened Frame 2015.
9. Selected Edit > Preferences.
10. Under Monitor Size, selected Default.
11. Clicked OK.
12. Verified that all looked honkey dorey.
13. Closed Frame 2015.
14. Opened Frame 2015.
15. Did a butt dance from sheer joy.

Note: I one thing I neglected to do was open Frame BEFORE I applied all the
various Windows updates hooey-phooey. OOPS!

For me, it was 1988 (FM version 3, I think?) on a Sun 3/50 (the one where the

Peter, the first Windows version was FM 4, I think ... I beta tested it for

Side-bar for those who remember the competition: when you ran spell-check in FM

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2015

2020-04-01 Thread Jerilynne Knight
Oh my Robert...I didn't start at that point, so you win the prize!

OOPS!

If you increased the text size in the Display control panel to

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 2015

2020-04-01 Thread Peter Gold
Looks like the font's too big for the leading. So...

1) where are the UI font settings kept?

2) do they change with monitor and/or FM installations?

3) is there a UI font-substitution statement for when a specified font
isn't installed?

3a) is the specified font an older version; is a newer one available?

Huh. I don't know that I've seen that before.

My first guess would be to check and make sure you have all the updates
installed. I think you only need the latest one, since at some point Adobe
went with cumulative instead of sequential updates.

My second would be to check your display drivers. Make sure they are
up-to-date, especially since you say you have new monitors.

My third would be to reset the preferences folder by deleting it.
C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\## (I think this is
13 for FM2015).

Not sure I have a fourth.

Hi Caroline,

Try creating a new layout, and use one of the layouts that is new to Fm 2015.
Prior layouts may not provide this functionality.

Yes, it's safer to find a machine that doesn't have any FM loaded on it to
play around with trials.

Good idea, Jeff.

I do have FM 10 (not 11) installed on a laptop at home. But will installing
cloud-based FM2015 "pollute" that and make my FM10 unusable afterwards?

I remember seeing previous posts over the years of others who did trial
upgrades but then decided no-thanks, only to find their original versions
unusable.

The translation department at my company's home office in China is considering
to obtain FrameMaker 2015. That's the best wording I can use for this because
I'm sure all of us are aware of the hacking in that country, so I can't speak
for how they'll get the software. (My company is absolutely humongous in China
with offices worldwide, but operates as if the staff consists of only four or
five minimum-wage peons. Sort of how Scrooge treated Marley in The Christmas
Carol.)

My office is in metro Atlanta and we use "FrameMaker Version 11.0," with really
no problems — though I wish we didn't have to jump through hoops to archive
[book-build] a finished manual. (Even then, those archives have their own
problems with duplicates of some files in different folders.)

I already know that files created (or edited) in a newer version of Frame must
be deliberately saved to a lower version so they can be accessed by those with
the earlier Frame product.

Because of the multi-generational difference between FrameMaker 2015 and Frame
11, I'm concerned that the newer product will not save files to the earlier
level (FM11) that we here can use.

Are my concerns valid or is everything hunky-dory? And no, the Chinese
management at my office will definitely NOT (i.e., no way, nada, hell-no!,
etc.) upgrade my department of three American writers with the new product. The
Chinese business model (or at least the one my company follows) is to cut costs
but hope for increased sales. I'll be glad to discuss that issue off-list.

[Framers] FrameMaker 2015 Publish Expert

2016-05-20 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Framers,

I have a client developing some manuals in FrameMaker 2015. They want to use
the Publish command to output responsive HTML 5. I have played with it a bit
and it looks like it is using inline styles. It looks like there is a way to
configure it to use classes with an external style sheet, but I haven't
explored too much. I am leaning towards finding someone that has experience
configuring the output so that it is as clean as possible. If you have
experience with FrameMaker's Publish command and are interested in a
project, please let me know. Thank you very much.

2016-04-12 Thread Johan Anglemark

Hi Tom,

We use large amounts of text insets. Our books are basically just text
insets and nothing else (we use them as a light-weight CMS), and we have
not experienced any problems under FrameMaker 2015.

Best,

Johan
