Re: FM driving me crazy!

2006-01-25 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
I had this problem with 7.0 once, but I was trying to set the
properties from within the component file.

Check the settings for the file in the book file. The book file
overrides the settings in the component file and changes its settings.
And, IIRC, the book file wants all its components to have the same
pagination, so check the settings for the other files, especially the
preceeding files.

Structured or unstructured -- it's all the same here.

It's a generated file, List of Tables. I am setting its pagination from

 This is unstructured FrameMaker.

 Any ideas?

Re: FM driving me crazy!

2006-01-25 Thread Bill Swallow
I *wonder*, though, if this isn't really an artifact of generated files.
I update the pagination which fixes the problem, but then I regenerate,
which creates a new, broken file. I wonder if FM is simply not smart
enough to generate an extra page when it regenerates the list of tables.
 Anyone know?

No, FM handles generated files just fine. Have you ever saved the TOC
to file before regenerating it? If not, try that. Other than that,
ensure your file and book pagination settings are both set to make
page count even.

First, check the internal pagination setting of the generated file and
make sure it's set to double-sided, not single sided.

Then check the pagination settings of the files that come before and
after it in the book; ideally they should all be set the same and at
the book level.

Also,

Hi John,

Hopefully the bulk of people respond directly to you and maybe you can let Lisa

I did get that same email so let's hope that we can track it. In their defense,
the content is pretty FM specific and they may not have bothered to look up the
'rules' of posting/harvesting. Maybe it would have been better for them to just
post to the list once though instead of emailing a collection of addresses.

Well, others have introduced you to the concept of $paranum and
$paranumonly, which may be what you were missing (in the FM 6 User
Guide, see pp. 346-350). But based on what you said, I'm wondering if
that's the only problem:

I have created a paragraph numbering tag for each type of
heading in my chapter ToC, e.g. toc12 is $chapnum.n=0.

What do you mean by chapter ToC? And what's toc12 -- the name of one
of your heading paragraph formats? It's an odd choice of name (compared
to, say, Head1), so I'm wondering what you really mean by paragraph
numbering tag (there's no such thing; there are paragraph tags, or
formats, and they may have an autonumber as one of their settings).

I have added the number manually to each heading in my
chapter ToC, and to each heading in the chapter.

If that's really true, you're doing something seriously wrong. The whole
point of adding an autonumber to a paragraph tag definition is so that
it will -- you know -- automatically have a number. Are you really
manually adding numbers? If so, you don't have autonumbers, and you need
to read pp. 113-122 of the User Guide.

unavailable figures make Frame crash

Hello,

we have the following problem on a couple of machines, with different documents:

If, on opening a file with missing figures, the user chooses to skip
this (and possibly all other figures), Frame crashes.

Occurs on some machines, not all of them. Frame is +SGML 5.5.6,
Windows is 2000 or XP.

Any ideas why, and how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

I have this guide in my possession from my days of using FM on UNIX. For a
long time and for the forseeable future, it will be FM on Windows only for
me, and as we all know, all of the User Guides for previous versions of FM
are still enormously helpful and applicable. (Even tho' I am on 7.1, I
found just what I needed in a FM for 6.0 guide). If anybody wants this,
it's free for the taking - all you need to do is to make arrangements to

Gage, Gauge- Gauge is the spelling used in Great Britain but finds some

RE: FM driving me crazy!

2006-01-25 Thread Ridder, Fred
FWIW, the technique I use and have disseminated to all the
other writers in my group is this:
- in the same directory as your book file, make a copy of each
generated file template using the expected name (for example,
  booknameTOC.fm and booknameLOF.fm)
- use the book file's Add menu to add the generation details
(tags to collect, etc.) for each type of generated file; when
FrameMaker prompts you to update the book after adding
each of these file, decline that option.
- when all generated files have been added, update the book

It saves the time it takes to do the initial update/generate pass,
which can be substantial for large books or documents that
have graphics pasted into them instead of referenced.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

POLL RESULTS: Which method do you use to apply bold and italics?

2006-01-25 Thread John Wilcox
 -Original Message-
 From: John Wilcox
 Sent: Monday, January 16, 2006 3:30 PM

This came up as a possible style standards issue here.
...
 A. Click the B and I buttons, or press Ctrl+B and Ctrl+I.
 B. Select Bold and Emphasis from the Character Catalog.

Of the 37 responses I got, 35 chose B or a variation thereof.

Most of those 35 were so adamant that I doubt they will be surprised at the
results, but I for one had no idea the vote would be so lop-sided.

All of the variations mentioned involved creating and using use-specific
char tags, such as BookTitle, VariableElement, NewTerm.

Two people said that using WebWorks, the bold and italic formatting would be
lost in the conversion, but I have not found this to be the case, at least
in WWEP.

Thanks to all who replied! As usual, the respondents comprise only a tiny
fraction of the list membership, but I suppose they give a pretty good
snapshot of actual usage.

Two Frame Issues

2006-01-25 Thread Doug
When I click the Format menu option in FrameMaker, the Font, Size, and
Style options are available. Obviously this can lead to applying
format overrides. I believe someone has created a plug-in that will
disable and/or remove these options...can someone remind me what the
name of it is?

Also, sometimes when I use Notepad to edit my Maker.ini file, it
becomes corrupted. The EOL markers seem to vanish, the whole thing
becomes a jumble, and Frame doesn't work properly until I restore an
uncorrupted version of the file. What's up with this/

Re: Comparing WebWorks versions

Hi Eileen,

I recently used Sourcerer 1.11 with FrameMaker 7.2 and it worked fine.

Ideally, we'd like to upgrade to the latest version of all software,
including FrameMaker v7.2 and WebWorks ePublisher Pro. However,
Sourcerer (which we absolutely rely on) does not yet support FrameMaker
v7.2. So for now we'll stick with Frame v7.1.

FM driving me crazy!

Structured or unstructured -- it's all the same here.

batch-upgrading documents 5.5.6 to 7.2?

2006-01-25 Thread Jakob Fix
Hello,

well, we've almost finished our migration software-wise, now we need
to convert several hundreds documents to the new version.

instead of opening each and every file manually, being told that it's
a version 5 document, and agreeing to have it updated by clicking the
OK button in the dialogue box, isn't there a "silent" way of
opening/upgrading files? I wouldn't mind doing it on a per-book
basis, because we have meta books containing all files of a
publication. Also, I know about the Shift+File click which shows
"Open all files in book" etc menu items.

So, to restate my question, is there a "silent option" to open files
created in a previous version in 7.x?

cheers,
Jakob.

PS: I guess one could save the old files in MIF, and load them in 7.x,
but how can this be automated? DZBatcher? Any other ideas?

No, FM handles generated files just fine. Have you ever saved the TOC
to file before regenerating it? If not, try that. Other than that,
ensure your file and book pagination settings are both set to "make
page count even".

First, check the internal pagination setting of the generated file and
make sure it's set to double-sided, not single sided.

Then check the pagination settings of the files that come before and
after it in the book; ideally they should all be set the same and at
the book level.

Numbers in my book's ToC?

2006-01-25 Thread Lester C. Smalley
On TOC reference page of the Table of Contents document, you can add the
<$paranum> or <$paranumonly> building blocks to the xxxTOC paragraphs
(e.g., Head1TOC) to extract the number of the specific item.

For example, you might have the Head1TOC paragraph as: <$paranum>\
<$paratext>\T<$pagenum>
(where "\ " is a non-breaking space and "\T" is a tab character)

You won't see any change until you regenerate the TOC, but then the
number as shown in the individual file will be pulled into the TOC for
you.

2006-01-25 Thread Bernard Aschwanden
In the reference page of the TOC find the code that looks like this:

<$paratext> <$pagenum>

Then add this to it:

<$paranum>

or

<$paranumonly>

where you feel it would do the most good :)

Likely you'll end up with this:

<$paranum> <$paratext> <$pagenum>

or

<$paranumonly> <$paratext> <$pagenum>

To make it easier to ID the right code, try this:

1. format the type of paragraph to change in the TOC (for example, Heading1TOC)
to color=magenta
2. in the reference pages (view > reference page) find the magenta code (see
above)
3. modify the code
4. view > body pages
5. switch to the book
6. update the book
7. review the magenta output (if correct, change color back, otherwise tweak
again)

In a total and self promting way, consider getting Advanced FrameMaker (I have
copies of the book) as there is a stellar, well thought out, well written,
feature rich, intelligently designed (ha-ha) chapter just on generated files.
Oh ya, I wrote that one :D

Hope that this helps out...

Yep, I've already gotten about 10 messages and it's about 50/50. I
personally view this as pure spam and I would think this guy should be
barred from the list. This is at best really annoying and I would

It's not necessary for all book components to have the same pagination,
as someone else suggested. But it _is_ necessary that they be logically
compatible. First, make sure all the book's files are set to Double
Sided. Then, check the 1st Page Side settings of the LOT, the file
preceding it, and the file following it -- are these settings consistent
with each other?

You can't, for example, set the LOT to start on a right page, have an
even page count, and be followed by a file that starts on a left page.
If you do, FM has to ignore one of your settings, and I'm not sure which
one it will drop (maybe not the same one every time).

And as someone else mentioned, after you generate/update, you _are_
saving all the files in the book, right?

There is a known problem with FM6.0 or earlier used on Windows, causing
crashes related to missing graphics.

A specific patch for FM6.0 is available for download from adobe.com:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=1420

There is a FM5.5.6 patch for this problem, offered by Systec.
See http://www.systec-gmbh.com/en/sites/downloads_epub.htm -- "Patches and
plug-ins", TOOLBOX plug-in for Adobe FrameMaker 5.5.6 under Windows XP

I'm not sure whether the patch applies to FM+SGML 5.5.6 as well.

Have you tried to set these properties _in the book window_?

Are you saving the files after you change the setting, before you update
the second time.
And, is the List file set to double-sided pagination?

Well, I hate to ask, but have you _ever_ saved the generated file(s), or
are you creating a new one each time you generate?

If the latter, that would explain a lot of your problems.

Joe,
Any time you turn around, save the file. Changing the settings as you
did is the same as altering the text in the file. If you don't save,
you lose.

Oh yeah I save them. In fact, when I'm initially creating a generated
file, I do the trick of generating, saving, overwriting the file with my
own template file, and then regenerating.

OT: Framemaker for UNIX User's Guide, Release 5

All,

I have this guide in my possession from my days of using FM on UNIX. For a
long time and for the forseeable future, it will be FM on Windows only for
me, and as we all know, all of the User Guides for previous versions of FM
are still enormously helpful and applicable. (Even tho' I am on 7.1, I
found just what I needed in a FM for 6.0 guide). If anybody wants this,
it's free for the taking - all you need to do is to make arrangements to
pick it up or if you're too far away, pay for the postage. That's it. Just
let me know and it's yours.

Gage vs. Gauge

"Does anyone have a very specific definition and set of examples that
differentiate GAGE and GAUGE?"

I'm no pro on this by any means but I found this by Googling and thought
that it might be applicable -->

"Gage, Gauge- Gauge is the spelling used in Great Britain but finds some use
in the U.S. It is chiefly found for nonlinear measurement instruments (fluid
gages, etc.). However, it is finding increased use for coordinate measuring
machines where it designates a device with a proportional range and some
form of indicator."

NOTE: for both of these, the larger the number, the smaller the

the spacing of track rails ("Narrow gauge", "broad gauge")

FM driving me crazy!

- use the book file's "Add" menu to add the generation details
(tags to collect, etc.) for each type of generated file; when
FrameMaker prompts you to update the book after adding
each of these file, decline that option.
- when all generated files have been added, update the book

It saves the time it takes to do the initial update/generate pass,
which can be substantial for large books or documents that
have graphics pasted into them instead of referenced.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

POLL RESULTS: Which method do you use to apply bold and italics?

Thanks,

Doug

batch-upgrading documents 5.5.6 to 7.2?

Sure. Download the free demo version of Mif2Go:
  http://www.omsys.com/dcl/download.htm

Install it; you only need to copy the two plugin DLL files,
m2rbook.dll and m2gframe.dll, to the frame\fminit\plugins
directory, and delete .cache there. (If you also want to try
Mif2Go itself, do the full install per the User's Guide.)

After you restart Frame, you'll see "Wash via MIF" in your
File menu. If you shift-File, it does all files in the book.
Really fast. Enjoy!

Comparing WebWorks versions

2006-01-25 Thread Anderson, Eileen
My team is using structured FrameMaker v7.1, Sourcerer v1.11, and
WebWorks Publisher v7.0.6 to create single-source documents to output
for different audiences and media (including print, PDF, and HTML).

Two of our team members are about to learn how to use WebWorks Publisher
Pro to create and modify templates. (Current team members know only how
to apply existing WWP templates.) However, at least one vendor I've
consulted no longer offers training on WebWorks Publisher Pro version 7;
it's simply too old. I'm wondering if we should upgrade to WebWorks
Publisher Pro 2003 or WebWorks ePublisher Pro.

There is one downside to upgrading: While our desktop publishers will
have WebWorks Publisher Pro, our authors will have only the WebWorks
Standard v7 that is included with purchase of FrameMaker. We previously
found that if we created templates in WWP Pro 2003, authors using WWP
Standard 7 couldn't output HTML using those templates. (That's why we
"downgraded" our WebWorks Pro licenses to version 7.) Having authors
capable of outputting their own HTML is a luxury for us, but not an
absolute need.

So, Framers, this is where I'd like to benefit from your experience and
advice.

- Have you used WebWorks ePublisher Pro? Do you find it offers
significant enhancements over prior versions of WebWorks Publisher Pro?
Is it compatible with FrameMaker version 7.1?
- Do you see a significant advantage in using WebWorks Publisher Pro
2003 as compared to WebWorks Publisher Pro version 7?
- Do you have other thoughts on our situation or lessons learned from
your experiences with different WebWorks Publisher versions?

Thanks!

AW: batch-upgrading documents 5.5.6 to 7.2?

2006-01-25 Thread Reng, Winfried
Hi,

> >So, to restate my question, is there a "silent option" to open files
> >created in a previous version in 7.x?

You might test Mif2Go. It has a feature to
"Wash via MIF" which works also on book files
and in demo mode. The description in the help
file is below.

Best regards

Winfried

---

Clean a single file

To clean a FrameMaker binary file: with the file open and active, on the
FrameMaker File menu click Wash Via MIF. Mif2Go does the following:

1. Saves the file as MIF with extension .tmb (for Temporary MIF Backup),
to avoid conflict with any existing MIF file of the same name.
2. Closes the file without saving.
3. Opens the .tmb MIF file.
4. Saves the .tmb MIF file as .fm.
5. Deletes the .tmb MIF file.

Clean all files in a book

To clean all files in a FrameMaker book: with the book file active, hold down
the Shift key, and on the FrameMaker File menu click Wash All Files in Book Via
MIF. Mif2Go processes each file in the book as described for Wash Via MIF,
afterward closing any file that was not open in the first place.

Back-up copies are saved first

If you have set up FrameMaker to save back-up files, when you "wash" files via
MIF, Mif2Go saves the previous .fm or .book file as filename.backup.fm or
filename.backup.book.
