I can't believe that FreeBSD's gcc version "doesn't work". It's more likely that your code needs libraries you don't have, or your system's memory is corrupt. Hard to tell without knowing the error message. Switching the compiler wouldn't solve these problems. Anyway you can find different gcc versions in the ports collection. If your compiler really is broken, you could install them as package. Fabian -- http://www.fabiankeil.de/ signature.asc Description: PGP signature

Dear Folks: My version of gcc doesn't work (reports errors in code that compiles elsewhere). Where can I go to download a later version of GNU code for gcc & gdb suitable for a FreeBSD system? I went to the GNU site but all I found there was source code ( .c & .h ), useless without a working compiler. Also, even if I had found a working binary, how would I know if it is for FreeBSD , LINUX , Solaris , or some other system? I would like to have the source code of (the set of) programs that can "read from"/"write to" any sector of a disk without a file-system, think of them as the disk i/o programs that underly the file-system. I expect them to have (collectively) about four arguments, one specifying the disk to access, the second pointing to a buffer (supplying the data to write or to accept the data read), the third stating the number of bytes to transfer, and the fourth giving the LBA address of the sector to be accessed. One function common to both the read program and the write program is the function to position the disk read/write head at the desired sector (given by its LBA ) [or notify the user via an interrupt (which one?) when that sector is at the read/write head]. This function is often named "seek". Source code with good comments are more desireable. One could combine the read & write programs into one program and add another argument telling the program whether it is to read or to write. One program that meets some of these requirements (but not all) is fdisk [it accesses only sector 0 ]. Its source would also be appreciated, all of those in the following versions of FreeBSD if available: versions 4.3, 4.7, & current-stable (6.0). ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Hi Jon, First thank you for your reply (same thank to Lowell Gilbert). I tried to change the mode with lptcontrol -p -d /dev/lpt0 but that is even worth because I have no more output at all! I am a bit lost between all the confguration files now. CUPS, apsfilter and friends is too much in one day :) Can you tell me where to install an especially downloaded ppd file? Now my printer's led is flashing permanently, but nothing else happenned. I never thank that printing would be that much exciting and full of suspense :) Hello Ivan: On 1/16/06, [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: >> So at that point: >> - I can print >> - I can go to sleep for a whole week before getting one chapter from the >> handbook printed. I have the same problem using foomatic-rip and lpd, on NetBSD 3. I have not tried printing recently with CUPS. I did google on "Slow printing" site:linuxprinting.org and got hundreds of hits. We are not the only ones who have this problem. Of course there were no definite answers to this problem. One suggestion was to change the /dev/lpt* from interrupt to polling, using lptcontrol. This is man 4 lpt, for the manual page. I did look at my *ppd file and saw that my resolution was set at the highest level. I am still looking into this but I have no definite answer either. I am hesitant to tinker with the way /dev/lpt* queries it's requests. -- Kind regards, Jonathan ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

I needed a quick firewall to guard an ISDN line, so I grabbed a K6/166. This box only came out of service a couple months ago, having run for several years on 4.3-stable (set up some time in 2001). The NIC card that is in it is an ISA bus card, a WD8003 (it was operating as ed0 in its previous incarnation). More for amusement than anything else, I decided to use that card, if I could, with a recent version of FreeBSD, so I loaded 5.4-R onto it. I now realize that I no longer have any idea how to tell the kernel how to find a non-PnP ISA card. Here is the kernel.conf file from the old box: en ed0 po ed0 0x300 ir ed0 10 iom ed0 0xd8000 f ed0 0 q I don't even remember what lines 1 and 5 mean. How do I set IRQ, memory address, etc for a non-PnP ISA card under 5.4-R, if that is even possible? If not possible, is it supported under 4.11? This isn't critical by any means. The motherboard has two open PCI slots on it, so I could just use PCI NIC cards for the firewall, but I am curious if the old cards can still be used. I also have a second ISA NIC card, a WD8013, so it would be somewhat amusing to have this box running a firewall using those two old NIC cards. The ISA bus should be able to easily keep up with 128Kb of traffic; the old version of the box was a mail- and web-server, and never had problems keeping up with ISDN speeds. ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
