What version of FreeBSD are you running? There are several versions of gcc in
the ports (/usr/ports/lang). If they won't build, you probably need to
upgrade your sys/kernel or at least rebuild them. You could also download a
package. Downloading a version outside the FreeBSD ports/packages is not
recommended and your mileage may definitely vary. Please post your compile
errors so we can see what's going on. Also post the output from uname -a

Have a look through /usr/ports/devel

If you have a recent version of FreeBSD, it will have a recent
version of GCC, and will compile compliant code without trouble.
Since you provided no version information, nor errors, nor examples of
failing code, I can't speculate further.

I can't believe that FreeBSD's gcc version "doesn't work".
It's more likely that your code needs libraries you don't have,
or your system's memory is corrupt. Hard to tell without knowing
the error message.

Switching the compiler wouldn't solve these problems.

Anyway you can find different gcc versions in the ports collection.
If your compiler really is broken, you could install them as package.

I've not worked with USB much. You might try killing and restarting
usbd. There might also be a kernel module (kldstat) that you can
unload and reload. The other thing that always shows up in weird ways
is a full filesystem. However, if neither of those help, since
nothing has changed, I'd look at a hardware failure.

Sounds like a USB problem. (Sorry, master-of-the-obvious here.) Since
this was working before and the problems are new, maybe there is a
hardware failure beginning to happen.

System is FreeBSD 5.2.1, USB modem ADSL Alcatel Speedtouch 330.

Then again a quick google to
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22error+reading+usb+urb%22&btnG=Google+Search
shows lots of folks having issues with the Alcatel Speedtouch 330. Maybe
read some of those articles. (My mailer may wrap the url, sorry.)

Also, you may want to consider upgrading to 6.0 (6.1 is due to be
released very soon), or at least to the latest 5.x. 5.2.1 is kind of
long in the tooth by now.

 What can it be?

Look in /var/log, and browse through the file called messages. There may
be some clues there.

You will probably prefer to use security/openssh-portable.
That port is more recent if I understand correctly,
and is capable of replacing the base ssh automatically,
thus making it unnecessary to bug with rc.conf.
"make config" will list the options.
Hope this helps.

This is a useful idea, but i don't think you have to go and develop a
whole new site to make it happen. simply take the existing ports
search application ([1]www.freebsd.com/ports) and make some small
modifications to it. stuff like when the search results come up, when
you click on the name of the app, instead of taking you to the CVS, it
takes you to the blog for that app where the long description is the
starting article. then you can add all the rating stuff and whatever
   you want below that.
also, a link to the homepage for the app would be nice. im constantly
searching freebsd ports and then in another tab searching google for
the app i just found to figure out what in the world it is.
i realize it would be double work for some maintainers but it can be
written to be fairly automated im sure. and the port maintainers can
just leave it up to the users to maintain the blog part if they like.

finding new ports that may compliment their lives.

Not is the ports collection already too big for the average

I see this as a chance to promote FreeBSD to desktop
users, which is what this project lacks. It has everything to
make it superior to all the other open source operating
systems, but nothing to really let it out in the open.

Imagine a FreeBSD ports blog that tries to gather data
on the most popular ports, sorted by ratings, downloads etc.
In addition, it posts articles every now and then telling
people about recent discoveries made among all the 10.000
ports. This could be a great thing!

I am aware of freshports.org, this would be totally different.
I know a thing or two about design, and could make the

In usderland, they're called open, lseek, read, and write. Just open
the raw disk device and treat it like a regular file, and remember you
need to access it in 512-byte chunks.

Is there a find command [that takes patterns] so if I know the name (or part
of the name) of a program of interest, I can find out the directory path to it
so I can find it easily. Also, where do I look for the basic sector i/o
programs (the ones that underly the file-system, they are eventually called
just before the hardware does the i/o] and what are their names?

I don't really understand what it is you're looking for, but the source
code for *all* the FreeBSD `programs' is available at:

http://cvsweb.freebsd.org/

It's also available through FTP, CVS, CVSup and is distributed as part

Sounds a bit like homework to me, but what you want is here:

/usr/src/bin/dd

See "man dd".

2006-02-11 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I would like to have the source code of (the set of) programs
that can "read from"/"write to" any sector of a disk without a
file-system, think of them as the disk i/o programs that underly the
file-system. I expect them to have (collectively) about four arguments,
one specifying the disk to access, the second pointing to a buffer
(supplying the data to write or to accept the data read), the third
stating the number of bytes to transfer, and the fourth giving the LBA
address of the sector to be accessed. One function common to both the
read program and the write program is the function to position the
disk read/write head at the desired sector (given by its LBA ) [or
notify the user via an interrupt (which one?) when that sector is at
the read/write head]. This function is often named "seek". Source
code with good comments are more desireable.
One could combine the read & write programs into one program
and add another argument telling the program whether it is to read
or to write.
One program that meets some of these requirements (but not all)
is fdisk [it accesses only sector 0 ]. Its source would also be
appreciated, all of those in the following versions of FreeBSD if
available: versions 4.3, 4.7, & current-stable (6.0).

Hi Jon,

First thank you for your reply (same thank to Lowell Gilbert).

I tried to change the mode with lptcontrol -p -d /dev/lpt0 but that is even
worth because I have no more output at all!

I am a bit lost between all the confguration files now. CUPS, apsfilter and
friends is too much in one day :)

Can you tell me where to install an especially downloaded ppd file?

Now my printer's led is flashing permanently, but nothing else happenned.

I never thank that printing would be that much exciting and full of suspense :)

I have the same problem using foomatic-rip and lpd, on NetBSD 3. I
have not tried printing recently with CUPS. I did google on "Slow
printing" site:linuxprinting.org and got hundreds of hits. We are not
the only ones who have this problem. Of course there were no definite
answers to this problem. One suggestion was to change the /dev/lpt*
from interrupt to polling, using lptcontrol. This is man 4 lpt, for
the manual page.

I did look at my *ppd file and saw that my resolution was set at the
highest level. I am still looking into this but I have no definite
answer either. I am hesitant to tinker with the way /dev/lpt* queries
it's requests.

Yes, you can try 6.0RC1, it's pretty stable.

Read the Handbook and stick to the advice:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/makeworld.html

You shouldn't have any trouble.

You should do "portupgrade -fa" (recompile all your
ports) after the upgrade is finished, but it's not an
urgent matter. You can as well wait a few weeks
and recompile them all then - thanks to binary
compatibility they will work until then.

2005-09-19 Thread mailtrail
I needed a quick firewall to guard an ISDN line, so I grabbed a K6/166.
This box only came out of service a couple months ago, having run for
several years on 4.3-stable (set up some time in 2001).

The NIC card that is in it is an ISA bus card, a WD8003 (it was operating
as ed0 in its previous incarnation). More for amusement than anything
else, I decided to use that card, if I could, with a recent version of
FreeBSD, so I loaded 5.4-R onto it.

I now realize that I no longer have any idea how to tell the kernel how to
find a non-PnP ISA card.

Here is the kernel.conf file from the old box:

  en ed0
  po ed0 0x300
  ir ed0 10
  iom ed0 0xd8000
  f ed0 0
  q

I don't even remember what lines 1 and 5 mean. How do I set IRQ, memory
address, etc for a non-PnP ISA card under 5.4-R, if that is even possible?
If not possible, is it supported under 4.11?

This isn't critical by any means. The motherboard has two open PCI slots
on it, so I could just use PCI NIC cards for the firewall, but I am
curious if the old cards can still be used. I also have a second ISA NIC
card, a WD8013, so it would be somewhat amusing to have this box running a
firewall using those two old NIC cards. The ISA bus should be able to
easily keep up with 128Kb of traffic; the old version of the box was a
mail- and web-server, and never had problems keeping up with ISDN speeds.

There are several good books out. You mention one. But, it is
probably too soon for any of them to have been updated for V6.xxx.
The Handbook is likely to be the most up to date.

You can compile your kernel for the processor of your need, see the
handbook.

why dosent freebsd support reiser4 isnt this supposed to be the fastest

I think all filesystems are supposed to be the fastest, but not all meet
that goal. Will the speed affect you in real life? If not, why does it
matter?

It's usually a good idea to: first identify the problem, then the
requirements for it's solution, then see what will solve your problem.

See the handbook, faq etc. The base system provides a console, you can
install X and your favorite WM and choice of bloatware.

In terms of networking... you will have to actually use preset
or DHCP provided values as a lot of domain stuff used in Windows does
NOT have functionality for other operating systems like FreeBSD,
unless there is a DNS and DHCP server that's litigating whether or
not you have a set hostname and can obtain an IP based on your PC's
Mac Address.
In terms of filesharing... do you need server or client type
filesharing and (if you do use X), what is your desktop environment
(KDE, Gnome, XFCE, etc)? Knowing your X setup may help determine
what way to best help you out with Samba.

Emmett,

Yes, provided the hardware is supported.

>From the question, I guess you are new to FreeBSD etc so some tips:

Read the documentation on the web site, in this case you could have
easily got the answer from the supported hardware list. The handbook is
fairly comprehensive too. You are more likely to get an answer if you
have tied to help yourself first.

Please don't forget the subject. There is a lot of traffic on this list
and mails with no subject my get ignored.

That said, the people here are quite helpful. Have fun.

2005-04-26 Thread Brandon Osborne
Hello,

I want to dial into a system I set up, with BSD and remove it through Command
Prompt, and reset the BSD, or remove it completely. How can I go about doing
this. Is it possible?
