Re: [Freedos-user] 4DOS - license issue, not included in FreeDOS 1.3?
Robert Riebisch said: Nevertheless, I was looking for a "pixel painter" (= bitmap> manipulation program for PCX, GIF, PNG, or JPEG files), which is EVE not. How about building on LXPIC ? It is already in FreeDOS repository, so probably has no license issues. I know it is a viewer, but already has limited imge manipulation capabilities. Perhaps some of its routines can be used in an image manipulation program. I used it for viewing images under Lynx browser; with LxPic it was possible to view the image and return to Lynx in less time than was required just to launch the DISPLAY viewer recommended in Lynx documentation. Another advantage is that it can show images which bitmap is bigger than all available RAM in the machine (very slowly, but much better than not being able to view the whole image). ___ Freedos-user mailing list Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user

This is something that came to my mind after I posted my previous message. As Mateus Viste said, both computers MUST see the same HD geometry, or the target will be unable to boot anything at all. If your installing computer can enter setup mode by pressing DEL key at start, before it tries to boot the O/S, then you may use the setup mode to check how it views the HDD and afterwards configure the 486 to use the same configuration (a 486 certainly can enter setup mode). If the installing computer auto configures the HDD to a geometry not available in the 486, you may change the geometry by hand to one acceptable by both machines. I assume, from your messages, that you want a dual boot but now have a blank HD. If you already have your PC-?booting DRDOS, then it is better to just copy the FreeDOS package to the HD, then put it back in the 486 and perform the installation there. Use the new computer to copy also a boot manager to the HD, if the FreeDOS distro does not already have one. Again, pay attention to the HD geometry in every case you exchange it between computers. The installing computer will probably correctly autodetect the geometry of a partitioned HD, but it is better to check before any attempt to write to it, in order to avoid garbling the HD contents. cordat...@aol.com said: WATTCP will access one and only one config file. First it looks at the environment variable WATTCP.CFG which represents a directory (not a file name!) if this environment variable does not exist it uses the current directory. It looks first for the file name WATTCP.CFG and if not found for the file name TCP.CFG. AFAIK, the environment variable is WATTCP_CFG. Some programs linked with WATTCP accept only a path in this variable (e.g., Lynx 2.8.5, FDSMTPOP), others accept a filename with path (e.g WGET 1.11.1) and, in this case, the file may have another name. It looks like Lynx is using WATT-32 which makes sense in retrospect since Lynx is compiled with DJGPP. Apparently DHCP does not work right in this case. I detected that Lynx sends a DHCP request message immediately rather than the expected DHCP discover message (which if successful is then followed by DHCP request). I found that, if you use this wattcp.cfg file: my_ip=DHCP Lynx (both 2.8.4 and 2.8.5) fails to configure, but if you have no wattcp.cfg, Lynx will try to configure first with BOOTP, then with DHCP, then with RARP and succeed if any is supported, but it takes about one minute for this. DHCP.EXE from mTCP fails -- times out before getting a reply. NTOOL configures in about one second, but gets a nameserver value that does not respond to further DNS requests. All my tests were done under plain DOS using a dial-up connection. BTW, how did you detect what messages Lynx sent? neither -trace nor -wdebug options seem to log protocol IDs. [Freedos-user] X-comment to Accessing custom ISA cards
Eric Auer said: PS: Another nice way to connect custom made hardware is to use the printer port. Luckily that stays available longer than the USB lobby wants ;-). The USB lobby does not worry about the printer port for they did already succeed in discontinuing all peripherals that used to connect to it. IMHO a nice thing to have would be an ISA card with USB ports,so one could use new peripherals with old motherboards. Most motherboards are thrown away in perfect working condition, just because they are incompatible with new peripherals or new software (but still fully compatible with DOS). Jeremy said: (At least this is what I generally see it referring to) Network Address Translation, commonly seen in home/small office type broadband router/switches [e.g. Linksys, Dlink, Netgear, Belkin products], it allows multiple (usually private) IP address to masquerade as a single (usually public) IP address by mapping the outgoing/incoming ports to appropriate computer. As for the actual problem, I have no idea, been far too many years since I setup dialup, so all I remember is once connected, authentication had to occur to allow general IP traffic. Does this mean it is not used in direct dial-up connection (local client to ISP server), but only to connect through a network (local client to local server, local server to ISP server) ? If yes, I cannot help, for I never tried this. I use, however, DOSPPP almost daily to connect to my ISP and did configure a dial-up a few weeks ago. DOSPPP does authenticate with my ISP without any problem. Arachne, however, did not work for me. Regards JAS --- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. It seems that in this respect the classification of EMM386 shall now be useable. A problem that appeared with version 2.05 worsened with 2.06: Arkady's MEM with option /e does not report EMS, but instead MEM: error: EMM call 41h In addition, version 2.06 crashes FreeDOS. [Freedos-user] HIMEM versus FDXMS
Eric Auer wrote: Finally, HIMEM versus FD*XMS*: This is simple, HIMEM is better and only HIMEM supports EMS/XMS memory pool sharing (as does e.g. MS HIMEM, it is only that FD*XMS* saves a bit of space by not having the support). Other than support for memory pool sharing, what are the advantages of HIMEM over FDXMS ? So you would ONLY want to use FD*XMS* if you either have a 286 (FDXMS286) or want to show some radical style by mixing drivers without reason ;-). If I use XMS but not EMS, I can save some bytes in UMB (real-mode UMB) by using FDXMS instead of HIMEM, enough to be able to load high some other driver or TSR. And, by the way, it is GOOD that only FDXMS286 supports 286. The overhead / development work to get some combined driver from 286 to 4 GBytes would certainly not be worth the effort given the lack of living 286 PCs today. I would add, also to have different drivers for up to 64 MB and more than 64 MB physical RAM. JAS --- SF.Net email is sponsored by: Discover Easy Linux Migration Strategies from IBM. MDGNU-ish type stuff suffers from the we despise everything related to MDMicrosoft and Not Invented Here syndromes, and its relationship with DOS MDis often uneasy. [Freedos-user] TEE truncates file
I have been using Tee to display and save output of a SMTP/POP client named TCPMAIL. One example of command line is: C:\!NET\TCPMAIL.EXE /q /d [EMAIL PROTECTED] |C:\UTLS\TEE .\MAIL.LST and noticed that it truncates the file (that is,some lines - perhaps 10 - that appear last on screen are not saved to file) This does not depend on filename nor on the tcpmail switches I use. [Freedos-user] Other FreeCOM nonconformity
I noticed another behavior difference between DRDOS and FreeDOS: If,in a batchfile there is the line: IF %1==XYZ GOTO LABEL and no argument is passed in command line when calling the batch file, Then DRDOS acts as if the comparison failed (that is,does not goto LABEL with above line, but goto LABEL if the line says IF NOT instead), while FreeDOS (FreeCOM v0.82 ak pl3 xms_swap) issues a syntax error message and ignores the line altogether (does not goto LABEL no matter whether the line says IF or IF NOT). Logically, both are defensible. I prefer DRDOS behavior. Has somenone tested this under MS-DOS ?
