[Freedos-user] [Fwd: CMDXSWP.COM missing from list of DOS shells]

2004-04-03 Thread Florian Xaver
From the djgpp mailing list:

 Original Message
Subject: CMDXSWP.COM missing from list of DOS shells
Date: Fri, 02 Apr 2004 22:11:25 GMT
From: Fabrizio Gennari [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Organization: TIN
Newsgroups: comp.os.msdos.djgpp
FreeDOS distributes a shell called CMDXSWP.COM, which is a DOS-style
shell. i.e. requires the /c switch when launching commands.
Unfortunately, it is not present in the list of DOS-style shells present
in the file libc/dos/process/dosexec.c, variable shell_brokets. Since
FreeDOS by default sets the COMSPEC env variable to point to this, it
may cause problems: for example, the system() function invokes the shell
without /c, causing the invocation to fail.
Example: take this somple program

int main(){
system(echo Hello World!);
return 0;
}
, compile it with DJGPP, and run it on a FreeDOS system with FreeDOS
installed, no SHELL variable and the variable COMSPEC pointing to
CMDXSWP.COM . It fails, because system(), detecting that echo is not an
executable file, tries to launch the shell, passing echo Hello World!
as the parameter. Unfortunately, it does that without the /c switch.
The fix would be to include CMDXSWP.COM in dosexec.c. A workaround is to
set the SHELL variable to COMMAND.COM, which is correctly detected by
DJGPP as being a DOS-style shell.

Re: [Freedos-user] Fwd: FreeDOS bundle

2004-12-30 Thread Florian Xaver
Hi!
1) Simplified the version naming convention
2) Officially state the stable and testing version Kernel and FreeCOM
information (eliminate some testing branch by merging stable code with
official)
3) make a table of Quick download from FreeDOS homepage. Only have
Odin and ISO, others please go to download page.

Good idea, but I'm not sure how to implement this. I'm open to
suggestions. Add a link to the yellow announcement box for Odin and
ISO? Or create a separate download button for Odin and ISO?
Or, add text links below the Download FreeDOS button to get just
Odin and ISO?

I suppose it would be good to describe (keeping it short) that ODIN is
a single-disk distribution of FreeDOS, and ISO is the complete
distribution?

A Quick Download link would be nice (maybe a button)... maybe like on
www.mozilla.org?
Instead of ODIN, i would post Single-Disk-Distribution, because ODIN
is just a name, ISO should be understandable for all.
A link features would be also nice (it could point to the about page).
btw: DOSLFN should be included into ALL packages! Nobody use DOS without
long file name. And...including a file manager like DNOSP oder
Necromancer DOS Navigator would be also good. These are things, DOS user
are missing...
btw2: Many people want to use FreeDOS with USB-stick oder extern hard
disc. There are drivers...not open source, but free. So...could you post
a link on
the about page (feature list) to http://www.bootdisk.com/usb.htm ?
Like: -USB support with free driver from [...]
The same for NTFS support. Could you post a link to
http://www.datapol.de/dpd/prod/ntfs4dos/ ? So that people can easily
find it!
Many ideas ;-)
Bye, Flo

2005-02-25 Thread Florian Xaver
long time ago, I had install FreeDOS once. I remember that there war a
file called fdosboot.bin and I could use grub to boot FreeDOS by
chainloader /fdosboot.bin. But I can't find this file on the FreeDOS
partition, neigher on the CD-ROM. Does FreeDOS still support this
method for booting?
I don't know about how to use grub, but with the latest version you can
make a bootfile (see sys /?) and i use it in boot.ini from WinXP.

Hi,

I have been using FreeDOS as a platform for a battery of human
performance tests for a few years. It has allowed me to keep a very
useful test battery going with the demise of MS-DOS, as the tests take
over system interrupts and do not work properly in a DOS window.
However, it is becoming more difficult to maintain this as there are
hardly any PCs with VFAT partitions anymore. I have managed to keep up
so far by producing a bootable CD-ROM and writing the data to a
diskette, but even this is getting edgy as many desktops come without a
diskette drive now. What I am wondering is if FreeDOS has developed the
capability to write to NTFS filesystems so that I could run the tests
under FreeDOS on the CD-ROM but write the data to an NTFS filesystem.
Also, I'm not sure if M$ has any other filesystems that I might need to
consider. Apple seems to do this with their HFS - every time open source
HFS tools appear, they change the spec.

[Freedos-user] [Fwd: ANNOUNCE: Mutt 1.5.5 Email Client for DOS / Windows / DJGPP]

2005-06-28 Thread Florian Xaver

 Original Message
Subject: ANNOUNCE: Mutt 1.5.5 Email Client for DOS / Windows / DJGPP
Date: 27 Jun 2005 23:23:24 -0700
From: bdeck [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Organization: http://groups.google.com
Newsgroups:
comp.os.msdos.djgpp,comp.mail.mutt,comp.os.msdos.misc,comp.os.msdos.mail-news,comp.os.msdos.apps

Mutt 1.5.5 for DOS / Windows / DJGPP has been released and is available
from the programming page of http://www.caddit.net .

Mutt is a small but very powerful text-based mail client for Unix
operating systems. This release has incorperated modified patches for
NNTP, POP and SMTP ('builtin' sendmail) and calls to external apps
(i.e. 'print', 'pipe message' and 'pipe attachment') work for the most
part. Direct IMAP support is also included, although it is recommend to
use an external IMAP client like 'isync'. A sample %DJDIR%/etc/_muttrc
is included. Change to taste.

MuttD is a DOS-DJGPP implementation of this package, and it is
downloadable from
the CADD-IT network ( http://www.caddit.net ). It has been build using
WATTCP-32 R8 (available at http://www.bgnett.no/~giva/ ) and requires a
DOS packet driver to run. For those using DJGPP under NT or WIN32 I
recommend trying/buying/installing NDIS3Pkt available at
http://www.danlan.com/ . You can get a sample wattcp.cfg from
http://www.bgnett.no/~giva/ for setting up Wattcp on your DOS system if
you have not already done so. One is *not included* in this package.

The modified sources are also being made available. There were many
modifications and hacks, most notibly bypassing the
'mutt_create_filter' and 'mutt_create_filter_fd' functions for reading
or writing messages or attachments to/from external processes. I know
that they are a bit hackish, so please don't bother complaining (i.e.
not '#ifdef __DJGPP__' used at every modification, although in the
majority of cases). If you use 'make clean', the configuration header
will also be re-written, so make a backup to compare with. (I just
search/delete all .o, .a and .exe files).

For more information about using configuring and using Mutt see the
project site:
 http://www.mutt.org/

Regards,
Ben

Re: [Freedos-user] New FreeDOS Install CD

2005-07-18 Thread Florian Xaver

Hi!

After installing FreeDOS from the CD-ROM, you can do several useful
things not available from
the original FreeDOS CD-ROM. You can update the kernel to the latest
unstable kernel via wget
by typing 'krnlupdt' at the command prompt if wget is installed.

Wow! Cool!

If
you don't want a package
installed anymore, you can remove it by typing 'fdpkg binary remove
pkgname' for a binary
package and 'fdpkg source remove pkgname' for a source package
(example: 'fdpkg binary remove
UDMA2'). If you want to install further software from the CD-ROM, set
the 'cdrep' environment
variable to your CD-ROM drive (set 'CDREP=D:'), then type 'fdcdrom
pkgname' and it will find
the package on the cdrom and install it (example: 'fdcdrom OWATCOM' to
install Open Watcom).

Is this the FreeDOS package software? If yes, where can i find it? It
doesn't seem to be in the list of software.

Or is it Pakke? (http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~phekda/richdawe/pakke/)

I hope i can test it this week, when i will have a better access of
internet (more then 8k).

Bye, Flo

PS: In the software list i found: LFNDOS
I don't think, that it is useable anymore. I would only have DOSLFN
included.

You haven't, i have also the problem...but i have created the partitions

I do not understand what happened, but the MBR does not appear
to have been modified. It may be something to do with a restart

2005-07-19 Thread Florian Xaver

Hi!

Hi, alas Flo did not explain WHICH problem HE has with the
partition scheme, but Mark's is either of the following:

I have more or less the same problem. The FreeDOS dev. kernel (last
version) told me the same like Mark's. Then i have problems with some
files (invalid opcode). It is the case, if i boot via boot disc.

And i have 2 disks...both produce this error.

- FreeDOS gets confused by partition type 0xde (GAG boot loader??)
- FreeDOS gets confused by partition type OS/2 boot menu hidden small FAT16
- FreeDOS crashes after showing a (to long, contains a lot of redundant
information) warning if it runs into a partition that is outside CHS-space
(after the first 1024 cylinders) but of a CHS-specific partition type

Yes, i have this problem.

- FreeDOS crashes after showing ... a warning if it runs into an extended
partition that is outside CHS-space but marked as CHS-specific type

If you need more info, ask. I don't think, that it will help you, if i
would tell you the numbers of the errors.

[Freedos-user] [SWORD] Please test a sample program

2005-09-02 Thread Florian Xaver

Hi all!

I want to release SWORD 2.30 next week. Most is finished now. I have
developed many new functions and have fixed a lot of bugs. And I want to
fix as many leftover bugs as possible. So, PLEASE test the test program
:-) The main goal is to provide FreeDOS's and Enhanced Dr-DOS's
developers a little and powerful GUI-library.

You can download the test program, compiled with SWORD 2.30 from

http://stud3.tuwien.ac.at/~e0225895/sword/download/swordsample.7z
http://stud3.tuwien.ac.at/~e0225895/sword/download/swordsample.zip

Both includes an UPXed exe file. Unzip it into a new directory. Use
start.bat to execute the program.
The first time you will be asked for some settings. If you want to test
others, just type image -setup or image -setup -verbose.

Known bugs:
1) Command Window
2) Set Time/Date-dialog isn't implemented
3) problems with some screensizes/colormodes.
4) Sometimes it seems to hang at startup. But please wait :-)

IMPORTANT: If the program doesn't switch into graphic mode, but exit to
command line, then type image -setup and try another screensize or
colormode (16M/Truecolor should always work).

PLEASE tell me all problems or things you would change! Thanks!
I am happy about any feedback!

Bye, Flo

PS: You can download a DOS un-7-zip program from
http://www.mysoftware.cjb.net/

PPS: It uses an update version of GRX 2.4.7. When i will release SWORD
2.30 next week, i will also zip this updated version and make it public.

[Freedos-user] Sword 2.30 released!

2005-09-25 Thread Florian Xaver

Hi!

I am happy to announce version 2.30 of Sword. What is Sword? It is a
Graphical User Interface library for DOS (DJGPP/C++). I have uploaded a
SAMPLE program too (binary). Please test it to help me to fix bugs.

What has been changed?

# new TMenuBar object
# improved Menu - now you can change settings in the menu
# The maximize-button has functionality now.
# new TClock object - which shows time, date and remaining memory
# heavily improved setup system
# support of windows/menus in windows (slow)
# new phase window
# command line options support
# using latest GRX 2.4.7 pre 2
# many bugfixes and improvements

It needs an updated version of GRX 2.4.7. pre beta. It will be available
on my homepage as long as it isn't downloadable at the official GRX site.

SWORD, Sample program and updated GRX can be downloaded from:
http://stud3.tuwien.ac.at/~e0225895/sword/
There you will also find more info.

If you have a question, bug fix or additional code please contact me.
Development will be much slower now, because i am busy with study. But
it won't stop ;-)

Yes. I also said that...I have nothing against a windows version. But I
want the developement of DOS!!

What do you think of including Mpxplay in all FreeDOS distributions?

Yes, I saw, it is at the software list. So, Jim, do you read this mail?
:-) Maybe you could update http://freedos.sourceforge.net/freedos/about/
? Maybe you could add the 7zip support (ported from Blair).

Actually it's AC97 and other strange sound chips native support made
it unique, also not many player can play WMV.

It supports AC97 - cool!! I will buy a new laptop and I want to use it
also under DOS!! :-)

It's really a great player! But I don't think porting to Windows is a
good idea, Windows have too many players.

There are many pro and contra. I know it from my DOS development. Nobody
use it. :-( I send him bug reports etc and write into the forum. So he
knows me, he knows that I like the DOS version. One step to continue DOS

Subject: ANNOUNCE: DJGPP port of mpop 1.0.0

Mpop is a small and fast POP3 client.
Its homepage is http://mpop.sourceforge.net/ .
Version 1.0.0 was released on 2006-05-25.

Binaries based on DJGPP are available from the SourceForge project page:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mpop/ .
These binaries use the Watt32 networking library from
http://www.bgnett.no/~giva/ .

Features include:
- Header based mail filtering: filter junk mail before downloading it.
- Delivery to mbox files, maildir folders (requires LFN), or a mail
delivery agent (MDA). Delivery with SMTP is possible by using an
   appropriate MDA, for example msmtp.
- Fast POP3 implementation using command pipelining.
- Authentication methods USER/PASS, APOP, PLAIN, LOGIN and CRAM-MD5.
- IPv6 support.
- Support for multiple POP3 accounts.

Support for TLS/SSL is available if mpop is compiled with the DJGPP
port of OpenSSL.

Re: [Freedos-user] DOS GUI opinions

2006-06-13 Thread Florian Xaver
Hi,

ok - I see I have to update my website :-)

I am using FreeDOS and Enhanced Dr-DOS with DOSLFN, a very good LFN
driver for DOS (I mean Win32 long file name implementation!). oZone is a
DJGPP program, so it uses LFN if a LFN driver is present. Else it uses
short file names (not tested by me, but I think it will make some
problems (but it should be configurable to use only short file names).

I don't see any reason, why you wouldn't want to use the LFN driver. And
then you can work without problems... copy, rename, move etc. inside of
oZone! It includes a navigator, which is like the explorer of Windows.
The test version at my page hasn't a sorted (by name, size etc.) file
list and directory tree, the next version will have a sorted list, so
oZone should be really useable as a file manager.

Sorry for my bad English...

bye
  flo

PS: a mouse driver like CTMOUSE needs to be installed!

John Hupp wrote:
Yes, I see that I need to clarify. This is for a pure FreeDOS system.
FreeDOS does not have native support for LFN, correct? I could perhaps run
a LFN driver, but I don't know how much native support FreeDOS has for LFN.
If you do some FreeDOS operation on a file that the LFN driver has named
(move, copy, xcopy, chkdsk), will it strip the LFN? Or worst case, mess up
the file/directory structure trying to interpret what the LFN driver has
 done?

The approach that MS-DOS DOSSHELL takes is to offer long Program Item names
or descriptions that display in the Program Manager, but the underlying DOS
file is untouched. The long name is maintained only in DOSSHELL.INI.

The DOSSHELL approach is fine for my purposes at the moment, but I'd like to
 see a more graphical-looking interface.

So that was my question about oZone. When you say that oZone supports LFN,
do you mean the Win32 long file name implementation?

Re: [Freedos-user] DOS GUI opinions

2006-06-15 Thread Florian Xaver
I looked at oZone 0.6 some. My first questions/observations while *running
it on a pure FreeDOS machine with DOSLFN loaded*:

Cool - thanks!

 1) I take it that CWSDPMI is not required when FreeDOS EMM386 is loaded and
providing whatever DPMI support it has. True? (I did not notice any
difference when I loaded CWSDPMI first.)

It needs CWSDPMI in the path or directory. oZone uses it automaticly.
Btw: You don't need any himem.sys or emm386!

 2) It takes a long time to load, about 25 seconds on this Pentium 100 with
16 MB. (DOSSHELL loads in 2-3 seconds.) Should it take that long to load?

That's very slow. But may have some reaseon:
(1) it is a debug version with debug infos etc. - very slow. The
final version will be optimized.
(2) maybe it needs more than 16MB, then it uses virtual memory on the
hard disc.

 3) It is a much more modern and pleasing looking interface than DOSSHELL.

Yes...DOSSHELL use the textmode I think?

 4) The Console did not work for me. The window appeared, but I could not
 enter anything.

This is a known bug. I will work on it!

 5) Copy-and-paste would not work for me in Navigateur. I tried to copy a
LFN file from floppy to the C drive. With the file selected, nothing
appeared when I clicked the Edit menu. I right-clicked on the file and got
a popup menu that let me select Copy, but in the folder on C, when I
right-clicked, the popup menu did not show Paste, nor did the Edit menu show
 anything.

This is a new problem. I have no problem with copy and paste. Have you
tried DragDrop?

Did you want to paste the file in another navigator window or in the
same? Very important question :-) Maybe there could be a problem in an
other windows.

 6) DOSLFN observations (from the command prompt, not in oZone):
 a) I entered MD DOS Games and successfully created a directory. But
CD DOS Games does not work. The directory created is DOS GAME (an
8-character name) and must be referenced that way. DIR /LFN reports the
directory name as DOS GAME, not DOS GAMES. So it seems like DOSLFN does not
 support long directory names.

FreeCOM doesn'T support LFN now. Try 4DOS or Dr-DOS's commandc.com.

 b) I entered EDIT Flight Of The Amazon Queen.LN and entered a command
line, saved and exited. When I EDIT Flight Of The Amazon Queen.LN again,
it opens the file, so LFN support seems good on that point. But DIR /LFN
displays FLIGHT O.LN, so it fails to report a LFN created under its own
 driver.

Only new programs support LFN. All programs which are compiled with
DJGPP support it. I am using Setedit ( http://setedit.sf.net ). Also
most File manager like Necromancer DOS Navigator or VC support it.

 c) On the other hand, it properly reports a LFN created under Windows XP
and not edited or otherwise operated on under FreeDOS, just doing a DIR /LFN
A: for a floppy where I had copied a LFN file from Win XP.
 7) I could not figure out how to create program folders or items from within
oZone, but poked around and found that folders created in OZONE\SYSTEM\MENU
become program folders, and .LN files are program items - simple command
lines as far as I could see.

Yes...

 8) In accord with my observations in (6), Flight Of The Amazon Queen.LN
was rendered as a short-name program item named FLIGHT O.

Rendered under pure DOS or in oZone? In oZone it should be displayed
right. And I have no problem. How did you created it? With FreeCOM? Then
this may be a problem with FreeCOM.

Under pure DOS + DOSLFN I am using Necromancers DOS Navigator - it
supports LFN very good. Also if you rename the file in oZone there
should be no problem.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS VERY LONG BUG REPORT AND FEEDBACK!!

Hi!

If the partition of WinXP has FAT32 file system THEN you can install it
via boot menu! Would this be a choice?

You cannot run DOS parallel to Windows. You can only simulate or

Imagine you are using your usb harddisk as boot device on another

Re: [Freedos-user] web site

2006-07-24 Thread Florian Xaver
For as long as I can remember, the FreeDOS front page has contained a
list of news items. That was appropriate when we were a bunch of
developers, but it's not helpful to users who aren't familiar with DOS.
So I'll likely move the news items to a developers page, or
something. The front page will be filled with a few paragraphs lifted
from About, and a few paragraphs lifted from (perhaps) Download and
other parts of the site. Not sure how I'll re-write that content. But
the key is, everything a new user needs to know about FreeDOS should be
 located on the front page.

That's a good idea. I wouldn't move it to a developers page, better to
move it to a new news page.

Re: [Freedos-user] web site

2006-07-27 Thread Florian Xaver
I'd still want to keep, say, the last 3 news items on the front page,
though, with a link to the News page for more news.

Or maybe displaying of the topic with a read more link would be a
good Idea?

Hi,

this article wasn't for the FreeDOS community. Windows and Linux users
should read it. If only one person is looking at FreeDOS.org, this
article will serve the purpose.

AND it also destroyed my notebook. All the bugs needs to be fixed!!

I don't think it is a problem if it's not released until

INSTALL trashed my working computer

gets solved. And what I get from the discussion, the possibility for
this seems to exist (with even some high probability)

Re: [Freedos-user] Updated 1.0 Testing CD

2006-08-03 Thread Florian Xaver
Another bug is that the path variable is not recognized in autoexec.bat
E.g. you set path=C:\dos in autoexec.bat and call keyb.exe with can be
definitely found in C:\dos I always get an error message unrecognized
 command

What does the SET command display? Does it display the path variable?
(You have to use the /E: switch to set the enviroment space!).

[Freedos-user] oZone 0.56 test version released

2006-08-03 Thread Florian Xaver
Hi,

I uploaded latest binary source code of oZone ( 4.9MB ) to
http://www.flox.at.tf (should be avaiable in some minutes)
Just unzip it into a new directory.

What are the main changes? Windows users will be much happier ;-)
I haven't made many changes, but usefull:

The Navigator (Windows user would say Explorer) shows SIZE, CTIME, ATIME,
MTIME and DATE of the files now.
You can sort the directory view by these new fields. And the tree is
sorted by NAMES.
The Note-tool is loaded by default now.

Windows Vista Skin isn't included, because I don't know if it is legal
(not my own images). If you have own desktop images or have made an own
skin, I would be very happy to include it.

I think oZone is really usefull now. Please try it, I am happy about
feedback ;-)

Flo

PS: It needs a mouse driver, cwsdpmi (included in FreeDOS 1.0) AND doslfn!

[Freedos-user] FD 1.0 destroies hard disc with FAT32

2006-08-09 Thread Florian Xaver
Hi,

my hard disc is trashed every time I want to install FD 1.0 pre-release on
a FAT32 drive!
(1,6GHz, one drive with one or more partition with only FAT32).

The problem seems to be after the Install program (when the hard disc
should be sysed, after the pre-installation process display). The
partition is formated with X-Fdisk or Partition Magic.

Any idea? Maybe somebody could test FD1.0 with FAT32 too?

Thanks
Flo
